Walkers shun warnings

BY TARA McGRATH WALKERS are endangering lives - their own and potential rescuers’ — by blatantly ignoring warnings not to enter the 1000 Steps trail on fire-danger days , safety authorities say.

Total fire bans have twice triggered closure of the Kokoda Memorial Track car park in the past fortnight but walkers are continuing to defy the closure and park along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road to reach the trail.

But users say there needs to be more information, or they will continue to ignore the closure and enter the park.

Parks Victoria Dandenong Ranges acting ranger-in-charge Michelle Doherty said the park closure was based on fire danger, wind speed and staff availability for emergency evacuations.

The entrance to the track off Burwood Highway is closed by Parks Victoria but people still park along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and enter via the exit.

Sergeant Andrew Herdman of Olinda police said his station constantly got requests from Parks Victoria, SES, CFA and Ambulance Victoria to monitor that area.

Acting Sergeant Warren Lechner of Rowville police said walkers were risking their lives. ‘‘On a high-fire-danger day, if you’re caught at the top of hill and a fire starts at the bottom, it’s going to go straight up that hill.’’

But many of the walkers the Weekly spoke to last week said they didn’t feel in any danger at the parkland. One, who didn’t want to be named, said she exercised there regularly and felt safe because of emergency markers that lined the track.

Authorities warn that hundreds of vehicles parked along the Tourist Road made it hard for emergency vehicles to access the area.

The CFA’s eastern metropolitan community safety manager Tammy Garrett said she and other CFA members were shocked by the attitudes of trail users.

and have one-on-one chats. Just two minutes of their time can make an impact.’’

She said another hazard of ‘‘people making their own car parking arrangements’’ along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road was that it made it difficult for volunteers to estimate how many people were in the park if a fire broke out.

Sergeant Herdman called the issue one of his priorities. He said officers often booked motorists for parking illegally along the road.

Ms Doherty refused to comment about whether there were better ways to enforce or inform users about the closure. Information about park closures is available at parks .vic.gov.au or by calling 13 19 63.

The Weekly spoke to people using the 1000 Steps on a total fire ban day last week: We were quick on the Steps today and we watched out for danger. We didn’t know they were closed beforehand. If we heard a siren, we would know what to do.

Natasha, 23 I was only concerned about making it to the top [laughs]. But they definitely need more signage, particularly at the main entrance where the trail begins.

Non-voters facing $70 fine

MORE than 11,000 Knox residents are being asked to ‘‘please explain’’ why they failed tro vote at last year’s council elections.

The Victorian Electoral Commission has sent letters to more than 500,000 voters statewide because there is no record that they voted.

They have been asked to provide a satisfactory excuse or they will receive a $70 penalty notice.

Letters were sent to 11,471 people in Knox who failed to vote early or attend a voting centre on October 27 last year.

Knox was one of only eight municipalities in the state which had attendance elections. All other councils have postal elections.

The penalty money will be distributed to each council, with Knox Council potentially pocketing more than $800,000 from non-voters.

Some residents are exempt from voting, including residents over the age of 70 or non-resident property owners.

A DECADE of neglect has left Scoresby Village burdened with unhygienic public toilets, disorganised parking and poor lighting which makes the area appear unsafe at night.

That’s the verdict of village traders who are demanding an urgent rescue of their neighbourhood shopping strip.

Huey’s Bakehouse co-owner Gail Hewitt said the area was a forgotten corner of Knox, claiming that in the 13 years she had operated the business, the council had done little there.

She said better lighting and parking restrictions were the biggest issues that needed to be addressed, as well the ‘‘grotty’’ and inaccessible toilets. ‘‘There is no ramp, it’s very hard to get in there and they’re always grotty. I wouldn’t send my best friend in there.’’

Mrs Hewitt said a lack of lighting in the village was a safety issue. ‘‘Nothing’s happening here. We were surprised when told that the village wasn’t earmarked for anything by the council. We’re the main shopping centre in Scoresby.’’

Council in this year’s budget. Cr Seymour said one of her major concerns was that Scoresby Village had not been recognised as a Neighbourhood Activity Centre in the Melbourne 2030 plan — a blueprint by state government that was written in 2002.

Cr Seymour said she trying to facilitate a meeting early next month between all the traders to discuss the issues.

She said the one initiative the council had undertaken had backfired — native trees planted to enhance the car park several years ago were breaking up the surface. ‘‘They’re bringing up the concrete and making a great big hump. It’s dangerous and people are going to trip over,’’ Mrs Hewitt said.

BY TARA McGRATH HOPES for a Rowville rail station are on hold with the final version of its feasibility study now more than six months overdue.

This is despite an earlier, draft report finding strong community support for the project, particularly from Monash University which sees the station as a key support for developing its Clayton campus.

The second stage of the feasibility study — to continue the planning and detailed design work for the preferred alignment — was supposed to start mid-last year. Due to be finished by mid-2013, that second stage is still unsighted.

A report to Knox Council yesterday recommended asking Premier Ted Baillieu and Transport Minister Terry Mulder, for an immediate start to the report’s second stage.

The report stated it was too soon to identify how Knox could best lobby for the project. ‘‘Until the final Rowville Rail Study Stage 1 report is released, it is difficult to know what the state government’s position is. It is therefore difficult to begin identifying

advocacy options for council. Additionally, if the report is released and stage 2 of the study announced, there may be no need for any additional advocacy at that time.’’

The construction of the Rowville rail line — which would run from Huntingdale to Rowville along the Wellington Road corridor— is one of Knox Council’s highest priorities. The cost is estimated at $2.89 billion of which $750 million would be spent in Knox.

One of the major findings from the Rowville Rail Study Stage Draft Report — which was open for public submissions until April 27 last year — was that there would need to be significant improvements to the Dandenong train line. It also noted it would be a complex project because of the surrounding urban environment and lack of historical protection for a route.

Candidates coy on disclosing donations

OF the 26 people who stood for Knox Council last year, only three disclosed the sources of campaign donations.

The Local Government Act requires candidates to outline campaign donations of $500 or more but this means that donations under the value do not have to be declared, regardless of the number. ‘‘The total’s irrelevant,’’ said Rob Spence, chief executive of the Municipal Association of Victoria. ‘‘If you had 25 people give you $100 then it’s not going to get declared.’’

In Knox, all 26 candidates lodged a formal return in which all but three said they had not received donations of more than $500. Both Taylor Ward candidates Anthony Osborne and Darren Pearce declared donations to their campaigns. Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said candidates who failed to lodge a campaign donation return form risked a $8450 fine.

“The Local Government Act’s requirement that campaign donations of $500 or more be publicly disclosed is an important component of conflict-of-interest provisions that require an elected councillor to step aside from any council decision that involves a person who made a contribution to their campaign,” she said.

Campaign donation disclosure is only one aspect of the electoral system that is being re-examined by the MAV. Mr Spence said voters had expressed concern over a lack of information on candidates, their platform and their political affiliations. ‘‘The message is coming to us that people are finding it difficult to understand who’s standing so that they can make an informed decision,’’ he said. ‘‘Some people have expressed the view to us that if you’re a member of a political party, you should tell people. That 150 words [allowed in a candidate’s statement] is not enough to get information on the individuals.’’

Officially Australian: Frank Drost will celebrate becoming an Australian citizen on Australia Day with children Sam and Ella and wife Kelly.

FRANK Drost wasn’t born in Australia, but he’s likely to know more about the land Down Under than many lifelong residents.

The Netherlands-born Boronia resident will join 45 others who will take the oath to become Australian citizens at the Knox Civic Centre on Australia Day this weekend.

The speed with which he completed the Australian general knowledge quiz all prospective citizens must pass might be a record — his perfect score came at an average of one answer every 51⁄2 seconds.

The nature enthusiast left his homeland when he was 25 to move to New Zealand and stayed there for the next 16 years. ‘‘Once I finished uni, the world was my oyster. As an earth scientist, New Zealand was the best country to go to because it had all the things a scientist wants to see,’’ Dr Drost said. But unable to find a job to match his expertise — he holds a PhD in geophysics — Dr Drost moved to Sydney.

He was already married to an Australian, Kelly, so the move seemed like a natural fit.

In 2008, they moved to Melbourne where he works as a climate scientist with the Bureau of Meteorology. ‘‘When I got here I didn’t know

anything about Melbourne so went for a drive to see where we would like to live,’’ Dr Drost said. ‘‘Initially I liked the new estates in the west, like Hoppers Crossing, but then I decided I liked the nature and all the trees in the east, and particularly Boronia’’ The 49 year old was initially hesitant about becoming an Australian citizen because he thought he would be forced to surrender his Dutch citizenship — the ‘‘last link’’ to his heritage. But once he learned he was entitled to dual citizenship, he had no hesitation.

There was plenty of paperwork to fill out, and study to prepare for a quiz about Australia.

Potential citizens have 40 minutes to complete the 20 question quiz and they need at least 15 correct answers to pass. Dr Drost said he finished the quiz in 1.47 minutes and scored 100 per cent.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t yet been able to make the most of the picturesque area where he now calls home. ‘‘I’ve got no skills for the Australian bush yet — I wouldn’t know what to do with a spider, snake or leech. But in New Zealand, drop me anywhere and I would survive.’’

However, after Saturday he hopes to put that theoretical knowledge into practice camping and bush walking with Kelly and their children, Ella and Sam.

INBRIEF PSOs on duty at the Gully Protective services officers were last night deployed to Ferntree Gull railway station for the first time. Warning on school parking Knox Council has again been forced to issue a warning to drivers parking illegally outside schools. The council’s city safety and health manager Steven Dickson said officers continued to see drivers disregarding parking conditions. Some of the issues Mr Dickson highlighted were double parking and parking in no-stopping zones, bus zones or school crossing areas. “Drivers are putting the safety of their own children and others at risk, by failing to adhere to parking restrictions at schools,” he said. Council officers will patrol schools, particularly during peak times when children are being dropped off or picked up.

TECHNOLOGY is often blamed for increasing obesity rates, but an Eastern Health dietitian says it could also play an important role in living well.

Angliss Hospital dietitian Mel Myers said popular apps available on phones and tablet devices helped people maintain a healthy lifestyle in the midst of their busy lives.

On February 1, as part of Healthy Weight Week, dietitians from the Angliss, Box Hill and Maroondah hospitals, as well as Wantirna Health and the Peter James Centre, will show off some of the best smartphone apps for healthy eating.

Ms Myers said apps should be used in conjunction with professional advice and now is the ideal time to review diet. ‘‘It’s the new year, there is warmer weather and people have high expectations and make goals that aren’t realistic. What we can offer is support and advice to ensure they not only make realistic goals, but do so in a healthy manner.’’

Food Tracker is a favourite app of Ms Myers’ because of its accessibility. Users scan what they are eating and the food is given a rating — green for good, amber for OK and red for bad. She recommended downloading Food Switch, which

analyses the fat, energy and salt content of foods and then recommends a better option.

However, people needed to remember that food wasn’t the only part of being healthy. ‘‘These apps are mostly counting calories and you can make up your daily intake of calories with unhealthy food. It doesn’t consider food

Parting with pets is such sweet success

BY DAVID SCHOUT A UNIQUE new program is filling a gap in the outer east mental health services by catering exclusively for patients’ four-legged friends.

Bayswater North resident Naomi Snell, a mental health educator, noticed people had trouble finding someone to care for their pet while they receive the help they need.

While some could turn to neighbours, family, friends or even boarding kennels to care for that non-human family member, those who did not have this point of call available were forced to surrender their beloved pet.

To ensure this did not happen, Ms Snell launched Paws for Purrfect Patient Therapy a year ago, giving mentally ill people peace of mind that their furry friend is being cared for while they’re in hospital. ‘‘I saw a gap in the mental health service, and that was the provision of care for pets,’’ she said. ‘‘I wanted to set up a foster care pro-

gram where we could care for their pets while they’re away from home.’’

The initiative, the first of its kind, also cares for pets of people who are experiencing homelessness or are escaping domestic violence.

Ms Snell said being able to reunite people with their pets was most rewarding. ‘‘There’s always immense gratitude.

Ultimately, for a lot of clients it’s their only avenue of support. It’s a family member for them. ‘‘We fostered for one guy who was in hospital for a long period of time, and now his ultimate goal is to become a foster carer for others in the same situation. That sort of stuff is great.’’

A not-for-profit organisation, Paws for Purrfect Patient Therapy is always on the lookout for support. ‘‘We’re currently looking for corporate sponsors and donations of good-quality pet food,’’ Ms Snell said.

Why leave kids in distress?

Summer marks the the busy season for emergency services workers who are inevitably called to hundreds of cases where children have been locked in cars. DANIEL TRAN investigates why leaving a child in the car alone, even for a few minutes, can be fatal. There are occasions when he and the other paramedics have arrived before anything serious has happened. But on others, the child is already unconscious. ‘‘Once you’ve seen a child suffering from heatstroke, it’s something that sort of doesn’t leave you,’’ he says.

In his 10 years with Ambulance Victoria, Mr Jaske, the Dandenong branch acting team manager, has been to about 30 cases of children being locked in cars, both accidentally and deliberately. ‘‘It’s quite a distressing sight for everyone involved, not just for the paramedics, for the bystanders and often the parents as well. ‘‘Warnings go out every year and I think that they need to because this unfortunately continues to happen.’’

Ambulance Victoria figures show that 900 children are locked in cars every year. More than 90 per cent of them are under four years old, and almost a quarter of the cases happen at home.

In Monash, data reveals 30 calls were made to triple-0 reporting someone trapped in their car.

Ambulance Victoria estimates that 75 per cent of the calls were made about children. ‘‘The majority of the calls coming in [are from] public places and car parks where concerned bystanders are walking past the car and see a kid or hear a kid crying,’’ Mr Jaske says. ‘‘We try not to break windows but if we have to, we have to.

Obviously, getting the child out is the priority. ‘‘You can die from heatstroke. It is a very lifethreatening sort of situation if that child is left in that car for that amount of time. ‘‘If we know we’re going to a case like that, we’ll already have the airconditioning blaring inside the ambulance on the way,’’ Mr Jaske says. ‘‘So as soon as we can remove the child from the car, we’ll pop them in the back and then we can do a thorough assessment out of the heat.’’

Lisa Vermeulen, the nurse unit manager in Maroondah Hospital’s emergency department, says children who are left in cars for even short periods of time can develop heat exhaustion. ‘‘The inside temperature of a locked car can rise quickly to dangerous levels in minutes, with temperatures reaching up to 20-30 degrees higher than outside temperatures,’’ she says. ‘‘Symptoms can include high body temperature, absent sweating, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, strange behaviour, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, disorientation, seizures and ultimately coma and death. Heatstroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not promptly treated.’’

Kidsafe Victoria president Robert Caulfield says his organisation has called on supermarkets to install warning signs in their car parks to avoid the potentially fatal trap. ‘‘The introduction of signage onto the entrance of all large shopping centre car parks would be a major step in the awareness campaign to remind parents of the dangers a couple of minutes before they leave their vehicles. ‘‘The clear message is to take the children with you, even if you think you will only be gone for a few minutes. It could save their life or avoid them suffering severe brain damage.’’

Mr Jaske says that most of the time, children are locked in by accident. ‘‘The parent will hop out to do something very small and lock the keys in the car,’’ he said. ‘‘The few times I’ve seen kids get locked in cars is that the parent has given the child the keys to

play with while they get something out of the boot . . . but the child’s pressed the lock button. ‘‘Just make sure that you’ve got your keys in hand at all times. Don’t let kids play with keys.’’

Mr Jaske says that in the most extreme cases, paramedics who were concerned about a child’s welfare spoke to nursing staff who reported the matter to the Department of Human Services.

A spokesman for the department confirmed that child protection officers became involved when they received reports from police, paramedics or other community members. ‘‘Child protection will determine whether protective intervention is required based on an assessment of whether the child has suffered — or is at risk of — abuse or neglect [and] the parents’ capacity to protect the child. The decision to prosecute rests with Victoria Police, and is made after consultation with child protection.’’

Mr Jaske says: ‘‘Leaving a child locked in a car on purpose, even if it’s for a few minutes, is unacceptable. I know that it’s tempting to run in to the servo or run into the milk bar and grab something very quickly, but because this sort of thing can happen so quickly and the effects can be so dire, it really is a pertinent warning to say to parents, ‘Look, just take the extra 30 seconds, get the kid out of the seatbelt and put them back in again at the end of it’.’’

ustralia Day gives us a long weekend this year and there’s plenty to do around Knox to keep children entertained on the last weekend before school returns.

To start the weekend off in style, families are being invited to the Bayswater version of a moonlight cinema at Guy Turner Reserve on Friday

night.

The free event, funded by the Bayswater Cricket Club and Knox Council, is in its sixth year and attracts hundreds of families.

This weekend’s movie, Wreck-it Ralph, was released during summer.

It’s about a video game villain who dreams of being a hero, but his quest brings havoc to the arcade where he lives. The screen will be switched on at

1.8-litre turbocharged engine, the new model has a 1.4-litre ‘twincharger’ powerplant. It has both a turbo and a supercharger. The supercharger pumps extra fuel into the engine at low revs, the turbo at higher engine speeds.

There’s some overlap between the two air pumps to give strong torque over a wide band, with the supercharger being de-clutched at 3500 revs, when the turbocharger takes over completely.

This little Volkswagen road rocket takes only 6.9 seconds to get to 100km/h from a standing start. But there’s a lot more than simply drag racing to 100km/h to make driving enjoyable.

We love the near instantaneous reaction from the engine and the way it just keeps on producing stacks of grunt. Overtaking is ridiculously easy, simply click down a gear or two, give the right pedal the message, and the Polo GTI leaps past slower traffic is a short and safe distance.

Another advantage of using a smaller engine is that the reciprocating components are lighter, so the engine is only too happy to rev harder the moment you ask it to do so.

olkswagen Polo GTI provides strong performance for a pretty modest price, carrying a recommended retail of just $27,790.

On-road costs have to be factored in, but even so, the Polo GTI won’t be a lot over the 30 grand mark before it’s yours.

Polo GTI is lifted in appearance from the rest of the Polo range by having blacked-out honeycomb front grilles, as well as black backing to the headlamp surrounds. There are red highlights above and below the main grille. A bolder front bumper ties in with the extended door sills and complements the 15mm lower suspension.

At the rear are chromed exhaust outlets and a diffuser look to the back bumper. Over the rear window sits a neatly shaped wing.

The quick little Volkswagen GTI looks good without going over the top in style.

Inside are tartan covered seats, red-leather trimmed wheel and gear lever knob and sports instruments.

As is the way with many new European cars, Volkswagen has fitted a smaller engine than in the superseded Polo GTI. That model had a

Italian machine that’s all about style Ewan Kennedy road tests the Alfa Romeo Giulietta

A

lfa Romeo went all German for a while with its model names, using boring numbers instead of proper names. That aberration is a thing of the past and we have just spent a most enjoyable week road testing an Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

The car is all about style, particularly at the front where the bonnet flows upwards from the Alfa-shield grille. The five-door hatchback has been styled to look like a sports coupe thanks to cleverly hidden rear door handles. The result is a sporting look that hides what is, in reality, a practical family hatch.

The Giulietta’s interior is reasonably spacious, although there are some compromises. Unless tall front-seat occupants are willing to give up some legroom, those in the back seats will find themselves cramped. Headroom can also be tight for tall, rear seat passengers.

Although the Giulietta is configured as a fiveseater, in the real world it is better suited to four, with an adult using the middle of the rear seat only in emergency situations. With no fifth

passenger in the car, the armrest with fold-out drink holders gives a feeling of luxury.

The rear seats have a 60/40 split fold for when extra cargo area is needed above the standard 350 litres. Behind the rear seat centre armrest is a ski hatch.

Multiple settings are offered in the way of a height-adjustable driver’s seat and a steering column that can be adjusted in four directions.

Alfa Romeo imports Giulietta to Australia with a choice of two engines. Our test car had the 1.4-litre turbocharged MultiAir petrol unit with 125kW of power.

Those who want even more performance can get a Giulietta QV with the turbocharged petrol 1750TBi engine that produces up to 173kW of power.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a great-looking Italian machine from a company with a rich sporting heritage and will appeal to those looking for more than mere transport in their family hatch.

Hawks’ junior takeover

BY ROY WARD ROWVILLE Football Club has taken over management of its junior club after being unable to resolve a disagreement with officials of the junior club.

The Hawks junior teams have been run separately from the senior club since 2008 and played in the Eastern Football League as an affiliate of the senior club.

Rowville senior president David Howlett said his committee was in talks with junior club to form an affiliation and management agreement after decisions from the junior officials led to families leaving the junior club.

But he said the talks had not led to a resolution, forcing the club to take the reins for season 2013 while making a new management structure for the junior club. ‘‘The focus has to be on junior footy and kids enjoying their football, ’’ Howlett said. ‘‘But these things tend to happen at clubs from time to time, when parents and the political environment become the main game when it should be about kids playing footy. ‘‘As a result of some of the decisions made, dozens of families had indicated they were leaving or considering leaving.’’

Howlett said the 2008 agreement allowed people from the junior club to form their own incorporated body, Rowville Hawks Junior Football Club, which would then manage the junior club.

In a statement, the club said the RHJFC was handed the management of the junior club in 2008 along with a $10,000 interest-free loan, which was repaid, along with the stipulation the

two groups would negotiate an affiliation agreement to cover the management of the junior teams but no agreement was put in place.

The statement also said the senior club had invested $30,000 in the past two years into the junior club to aid player development. ‘‘They were still playing as Rowville Hawks teams, it just allowed them to manage those teams. They are not managing those teams now,’’ Howlett said.

Some families had indicated they had already left the Hawks but he hoped the decision would lead to other families staying. ‘‘With where the situation had got to, there

was going to be fall out either way,’’ he said. ‘‘No doubt some people will be disaffected but this decision was about the long-term direction of the whole club.’’

Howlett said the club had a lot of work ahead to put things in place ahead of the coming junior football season and he wanted the focus to return to playing football.

Club officials would be speaking widely with parents and supporters in the coming weeks to further explain the situation.

The Hawks won the EFL division 2 senior premiership last season with 18 players from the side coming from the Hawks junior club.

Charity match to benefit cancer fight TWO of Scoresby-Ferndale Cricket Club’s longtime players have faced a battle beyond cricket over the past year.

Magpies favourite sons Paul Ormond and Clint Williams have fought battles with cancer and while club vice-president Evan Brookes is happy to report they are on the road to recovery, the club wanted to do something to support the pair.

The Magpies will host a charity Twenty20 cricket match at Scoresby Recreation Reserve this Sunday to raise money for the Peter Mac Foundation.

The day will include a backyard style, all-in cricket match about 2pm, then a full Twenty20 match between a team selected by Ormond and Williams and the Melbourne Eagles, a specialist Twenty20 side, is expected to start at about 5pm.

Brookes said the Magpies hoped to see plenty of people come out and support the day, which requires a gold coin donation for entry and will feature other entertainment and activities. ‘‘We wanted to do something to give back to them so we asked whether they would like us to have a charity game in their honour,’’ Brookes said. ‘‘They asked we donate to Peter Mac because that was who took them for their care and treatment.’’

Brookes said both players were on the mend and active club members but were not back playing cricket.

Transplanted Ranger making mark in US

BY ROY WARD MOVING halfway around the world to a US college is meant to be a difficult task.

Adjusting to life as both a student and an athlete is also a hard ask, but right now Venky Jois is excelling at both with his new school Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.

The 19 year old from Boronia is in his freshman or first year with the Eagles and has quickly adjusted to the expectations of his classes and his basketball team where the former Dandenong Rangers forward has quickly moved from the bottom of the roster to a starting position.

After enduring the opening six months of his four-year degree and withstanding his first white Christmas, Jois spoke with the Weekly last week.

He said he was loving life in Cheney, especially after getting his first taste of snow. ‘‘It was very cold, I’d never seen snow like that before and I got to make my first snowman,’’ he said. ‘‘It has been an adjustment [coming to the US] — definitely being away from your family hits you at Christmas time and during public holidays, you realise you are missing things but liv[ 22 ] KNOX WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

Jois’s on-court performance has impressed his coaches and those outside the program, with the athletic forward moving into the Eagles’ starting line-up after taking full advantage of the opportunity to take the minutes left by players who graduated after the end of last season.

Jois said he got a chance to prove himself during the Eagles’ preseason tour of Canada in January 23, 2013

which they played leading Canadian college teams. ‘‘We played seven games in 10 or 11 days, I got some minutes there and became one of the main players,’’ he said. ‘‘I wouldn’t say the standard here is too tough for me. Playing in the South East Australian Basketball League was good in that way, it prepared me to play against players who were much stronger than me. ‘‘But the style of game here is very different defensively and it’s not as team orientated offensively. ‘‘On defence the players are so skilled you can’t leave anyone alone, they are all marksmen.’’

Jois has gone on to start all 16 of the Eagles games so far and is second on the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game and leader in rebounds with nine per game.

After adjusting to the need to assert himself more offensively and keep with his man defensively, Jois has found US basketball to his liking, as he has used his athleticism to make the most of the room to drive to the basket. ‘‘The type of basketball suits me,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve always been able to get to the basket but

I’d have to kick the ball out because defenders would come and help. The defense is more individually orientated here so once you are past the first guy you don’t have to worry as much about the second guy coming across.’’

The Eagles didn’t have the best start to their season, losing several tight matches, and the group struggled to gel after adding several new players during the off-season.

In US college basketball the first part of the teams’ seasons involve games against teams outside of their conferences and the second half involve inter-conference matches.

The Eagles have had a tough start to conference play with a 2-4 record but Jois is confident his team can finish the season well. ‘‘We are starting to realise our strengths as a team so we are taking better shots and performing better as a result,’’ he said.

Off court Jois was put in an accelerated academic program which he says has been no more difficult than his accelerated year 12 classes in Australia. ‘‘The classes here are supposed to be harder but I haven’t found that,’’ he said.

FERNTREE Gully District Cricket Association has a proud history of producing leading cricketers but on Sunday the association added a long soughtafter trophy to its collection.

The FTGDCA under-16 side won the association’s first Jim Beitzel Shield by beating Diamond Valley Cricket Association by five wickets at Gordon Barnard Reserve, Greythorn. The Jim Beitzel Shield brings together leading interleague under-16 sides from the state’s best cricket associations for a two-week tournament.

FTGDCA under-16s coach Christian Trotter said he was proud of his side for its history-making achievement.

“The boys were pretty rapt with the win. They are a good bunch of kids who had great parental support throughout the competition.We’ve [the association] produced a lot of good cricketers over the years so you would think we might have won one before now.

“But it involved six to seven games within two weeks and is a very cut-throat competition, so when you consider we are one of the smaller associations in comparison to others, it’s a good effort to win it.”

After winning the toss and bowling, the FTGDCA looked in trouble early when Diamond Valley broke out to 0-62 but was eventually restricted to 4-152 from its 45 overs.

chase but with opener Anthony Brolic (82 not out) carrying his bat, got to the winning score on 5-160 from 41.3 overs. Brolic won the grand final most valuable player award for his efforts.

Trotter said the whole squad contributed throughout the competition with captain Jackson Waters leading the team well, while all-rounder Zach Flintoff was also impressive with bat and ball.

Trotter also paid tribute to the exception support the team received from the players’ parents and from many across the association.

“My phone was taking a battering on Sunday night with people from around the association and the key executive members calling to see how we went,” he said.

Jekyll-Hyde Parkers upset Wantirna South WHEN it comes to playing Ainslie Park, you never know which team you will get, the one that matches it with the top sides in the RDCA Lindsay Trollope Shield or the team that falls to the lowly ones.

On Saturday the Parkers’ ‘giant killing’ team turned up and caused an upset win over Wantirna South at Ainslie Park Reserve. In the surprise of the round, Ainslie Park’s 8-185 was too good for Wantirna South’s 183.

Wantirna South lost three early wickets to run outs but John Aumann (62) and Michael McDonald (36) put the Devils in the box seat to compile 183. The Parkers were in trouble at 5-42 before a sixth-wicket partnership of 67 between Brad Wadsworth (28) and Sean Arbuckle (29). Once these two departed, Mark Arnot (58 not out) and Scott Minetti (13) made sure their side got to victory in the final overs.

Arnot said his side, which was promoted to the top league this season, continued to surprise him when facing leading teams. ‘‘It’s very hard to say what we will do because we have lost games against opponents we should beat, won games against teams that I guess on paper should beat us.’’

Norwood then failed to

capitalise and was skittled for 102 with Jason Butcher (3-12) the main wicket taker.

South Warrandyte was dismissed for 126 by North Ringwood, then Josh Barrett (4-23) had the Bulls in all sorts of trouble at 4-32. But North steadied and a fifthwicket partnership of 61 between Michael Scott (61no) and Simon Gray (21) saw them over the line.

Warranwood’s resurgence continued when it easily beat Mooroolbark which was 2-7 before Adam Brush (38) and Adam Houghton (37) took the score to 85. Tim Hall (3-23) and Dave Johnson (13) then restricted the Barkers to 9-125. Warranwood lost three wickets chasing down the total.

South Croydon compiled 8-160 against Croydon North with Michael King (61no) the main scorer. In reply Daniel Barsenbach (3-11) and Robert Hughes (3-19) never gave the Knights a chance, to dismiss them for 105.

Well-known Stranger racks up 250 games BAYSWATER all-rounder Darryl Stranger thought his first grade career would be over soon after his 200th game.

That was until two days before the start of the 2011-2012 Victorian Sub District Cricket Association season when Waters captain Sean Flynn asked Stranger to move up to add some experience to his young first XI. Some strong performances meant Stranger was permanently placed in the senior side and he has kept going since then.

On Saturday, the 50 year old ran out for his 250th first XI game and the Waters celebrated the milestone with a first-day victory over Croydon at Croydon Oval bowling the Cockies out for 120

then Stranger was at the crease when the Waters passed the total late in the day to end play on 8-132. Stranger said he was proud of the milestone but hadn’t given it too much thought until it was raised last week. ‘‘I played my 200th match quite a while ago and then went back to captain the seconds,’’ he said. ‘‘I didn’t think I’d play firsts again but Sean asked me on the Thursday before last season started if I wanted to come up for a couple of games. I got a few wickets so I kept playing.’’

The all-rounder hasn’t set a date for his final ‘dismissal’ from the Waters’ seniors, instead opting for the ‘‘one game at a time’’ cliche. ‘‘A few blokes got on the texts to me and I got a bit of stick from the younger blokes but it all made it a good day, especially being out there when we passed their score,’’ Stranger said.

The Waters continue their clash with the Cockies at Croydon Oval this Saturday at 1pm.

UPWEY-TECOMA captain Sam Taylor brought Knox Falcons back down to earth in the first day of their FTGDCA Norm Reeves Shield match at Argyle Way on Saturday.

The Tigers registered an imposing 5-378 on the back of Taylor’s 157 not out.

Taylor, a dual Feaver Medallist in the FTGDCA, is a veteran of 187 Premier Cricket matches for Richmond and as was evident in last year’s grand final, a player who places great value on his wicket.

The Falcons face a big ask to chase down the Tigers’ total when play resumes this Saturday.

Ferntree Gully regained some batting form to register a par score of 241 at Knoxfield with solid performances from Shane Richardson (48), Josh Henry and Paul Veltri. Knights opening bowler Trent Evans led from the front and continues to impress with four wickets.

The game between top side Eildon Park and third-placed Upper Gully is evenly poised as the Panthers were dismissed for 205 with several players getting a start.

For Upper Gully, Mr Reliable, Marc Hardy collected 4-45.

Footballers were on top for most of the day at Fairpark where they had Johnson Park 8-112 from 44 overs at the tea break.

At one stage, the Sharks were 1-66 before the batting collapse with opener Bryn Gaunt, the last man out for 63. Set 132 for victory, the Ballers were 3-47 at stumps and should cause an upset.

Monbulk (3-106) has taken first innings points on the first day over St Johns Tecoma (95) and will probably throw the willow for an hour next week in a bid to chase maximum points.
