You didn’t have to be a die-hard footy fan to feel a crackle of excitement as the inaugural round of the new AFL women’s league kicked off on the first weekend in February.

As a crowd of thousands swarmed towards Carlton’s Ikon Park to see the Blues take on the Magpies, and an estimated 1.1 million more watched on TV, there was a palpable sense that this was history in the making.

There were few, however, more thrilled than businesswoman, philanthropist and passionate women’s football advocate Susan Alberti, who worked tirelessly for years to turn the dream of a national women’s football competition into a reality.

But while history will remember her as the godmother of Aussie rules’ women’s league, there’s so much more to this extraordinary woman than footy. Read Peter Wilmoth’s compelling interview inside. ●

O

f course Susan Alberti was in the crowd to see Collingwood take on Carlton in the first-ever match in the new national AFL Women’s competion – there are few people who have worked harder to make the game a reality. “I was emotionally satisfied and so happy for our young footballers,” she says. “It has created such goodwill.”

On that auspicious Friday night, the woman widely regarded as the patron saint of the Western Bulldogs sat among the Collingwood supporters, who she says were “welcoming and gracious in defeat”. But nothing could have dimmed her beaming smile as she drank in the sheer size of the crowd and the overwhelming enthusiasm – sure signs, she says, of a bright future for woman’s football.

It was the culmination of an exciting few months for Susan. When we first meet for this interview, it’s just a few weeks after her beloved Bulldogs’ historic AFL premiership – their first in 62 years. The whiff of victory still hangs over the Whitten Oval; there’s a queue in the shop buying merchandise, and the cafe overlooking the oval is busy – families in for brunch, business meetings, teenagers in Bulldogs scarves. On the other side of the room, supporters are buying memberships.

The scene is just what Susan has been waiting to witness for more than half a century. And there she is at the membership desk, organising a Bulldogs

This adds to the temptation to paint Susan, 69, as a selfless fairy godmother of football in the western suburbs, an ever-smiling, much-loved figure who has endured unspeakable tragedy and yet emerged from that as a life-force of action and positivity.

But thankfully there’s the flogger incident. As she tells it, as a kid she’d go each week to watch the Bulldogs. One day she was playing with matches and accidentally lit some “floggers”, huge balls of paper streamers attached to a stick that supporters back then would wave around behind the goals. “Got in so much trouble with dad,” she says. Dad was a cop, too.

Susan and I take a seat in the cafe. Amid the squeals of excited kids, Susan reflects on the day after the Bulldogs’ emotional win last September when she and her husband Colin flew to Europe for a cruise and to visit southern France. “Everywhere we went my husband kept pointing at the [red, white and blue] French flag and saying, ‘Even over here they know you’ve won the grand final.’”

But it wasn’t until she returned to Melbourne that the win hit home. “I still have to pinch myself and say, ‘This is real, this is true’. It’s made me extremely happy. It has been a lifetime of support, blood, sweat and tears. I’ve seen more downs than ups. I’ve seen people grow old and wish for that moment in time.

“It’s made a lot of people very happy. And not just Doggie supporters but the whole of Australia, to see 6 The weekly review \ FEBRUARY 15, 2017

the underdogs come up and take off the grand final.”

The Bulldogs’ victory – willed on by most of the country – capped an extraordinary year for Susan.

In June the AFL Women’s league, which Susan had been central in initiating through financial support, encouragement and lobbying, was announced. In August the ABC’s Australian Story focused on the close relationship between Susan and Collingwood footballer Moana Hope, focusing on both women’s struggles and achievements. Susan has become a nationally known exemplar for dogged perseverance.

These qualities were already evident as a teenager growing up in a housing trust home, Ashwood, in Melbourne’s south-east. At 14, she had a weekend and school holiday job at McEwan’s hardware store in Chadstone. “I always said to myself, ‘I need to work hard if I want to be successful’.”

Susan was “never materialistic, never envious of anyone” but was blessed with a strong ambitious streak. “This is no reflection on my parents, but I wanted to do better than mum and dad had done,” she says. “They were wonderful people, they did the best they could, but I knew I could do better. I aspired to be successful in everything I tried. I’ve had failures, but I’ve learned from those failures.”

She played football as a kid with a mixed gender team, but was forced to stop at 15. “I had to give it up because I was battered around too much. I was giving as much as I got. My dad said enough is enough for a young woman.”

“i had to make a lot of decisions on my own.

It’s very tough at the top. you’ve got no one you can talk to” In her adult life Susan has lived through several tragedies. Her first husband Angelo, whom she met at a dance at the Hawthorn Town Hall, died in 1995 in a hit-and-run accident when he was knocked off his motorbike, leaving a devastated Susan to run their major construction business herself.

n 1982, her only child Danielle was diagnosed, aged 12, with type 1 diabetes. In 2001 the pair returned to Melbourne from the US so Susan, a compatible donor, could donate a kidney as Danielle’s was failing. On the flight, Danielle died in her mother’s arms from a massive heart attack due to diabetes-related complications.

“That really hit me very hard. I had a lot of work on at the time. I had some wonderful partners in a couple of ventures and they said, ‘You take your time’, which certainly helped. But I still had to stay focused on our business because I was it.”

Susan and Angelo had founded Dansu Constructions together and ran it side by side, with him as director and her as secretary. When Angelo died, Susan assumed responsibility for running the company.

“I was the only female registered builder in Victoria.

That was quite an accomplishment. I had to go back to school to get my certificate.”

She wound down the construction arm of the business 11 years ago. “When my husband was killed, I had 300 employees. And they were all dependent on us for their income and mortgages. I was determined that if I was going to wind down I would ensure that each and every one of them had a job to go to, because my husband would have wanted me to do that.

“I had to make a lot of decisions on my own. It’s very tough at the top. You’ve really got no one you can talk to.

Just yourself. And decisions you make rest with you.”

In 2005 Susan married Colin North. Nine months later she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. “I had one year of chemotherapy and 34 consecutive days of radiation,” she says. “That knocked me around a bit but I kept working. What was I going to do? I’d go into work, and I’d lie on the couch for maybe an hour or two because I was feeling that nauseous.

“I remember saying to my husband, ‘You can leave now, I’m used to looking after myself’. I didn’t want anyone looking after me because I was sick. I know that sounds ridiculous. He was horrified. And he was absolutely amazing. I could not have got through it without him. It was a rough journey.”

Then, four years ago, while having an echocardiogram (a type of ultrasound) Susan had a heart attack. “I had open-heart surgery with five blockages and was in intensive care for 10 days and in hospital for a month,”

she says. “My kidneys failed and I was told I’d be on dialysis if I didn’t do something.”

She was told she had just 12 per cent kidney function and if she took no action in relation to her weight she would be dead in six months from a heart attack, or on dialysis. “I walked out of her office, went home, cried all night and then thought ‘Stop your tears, pull your finger out, do something’. The simplicity was ‘Cut in half what you’re eating’.” Susan lost 58 kilos, half her body weight.

“Unbelievable,” she says of the change in her life. “The energy. The inner happiness. The desire to stay well. I was told ‘Don’t worry about anything else, just walk’.”

n 2014, walking down some stairs soon after leaving hospital, she fell and broke her shoulder. She was in a sling for four months, but it didn’t stop her exercising. The exercise regimen was a revelation.

“It gave me a zest for living like I’ve never had before. It made me realise life is so short, so precious, good health is so important. If I can encourage one person to turn their life around, well then I’ve done some good.”

When she joined the Bulldogs’ board in 2004, it was her task to fix the rundown Whitten Oval. “The job they gave me was to find $32 million,” she says. “They only give tough jobs to women.

“We had a rundown facility with rats running around, we had a CEO with an office in the fire escape, board meetings conducted in a room with no ventilation, not sitting on boxes but near enough.

[Then-chief executive] Cam Rose and I had a dream that this could happen. It gives me so much pride to know this is a home for all the people in the west of Melbourne because before it was disgusting.”

Susan stepped down as vice president late last year. “It it was time to hand the baton on to somebody younger.”

Her passion now is the newly minted AFL women’s league. She is a director of the league’s advisory group and AFLW premiership cup ambassador. She’s also one of Australia’s pre-eminent philanthropists. “What good is having all that money in a cemetery?” she once said.

Her enduring desire is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. “It’s my greatest wish in life – this is something I’ve been working towards for 35 years. I made a promise to my daughter … that I would never give up.

A STICKY SITUATION SARAH HARRIS MEETS AN UNLIKELY PUBLISHING PHENOMENON

f you were to condense it to a sticky note, you might write that Chaz Hutton is a tall man who has become famous for drawing on very small yellow bits of paper. But there is so much more to the story of “the world’s first sticky note lifestyle guru”, who has developed a cult following on Instagram for his pithy observations of everyday life drawn on ubiquitous office stationery.

That the sketching of stick figures on yellow squares is even a thing, much less that it’s able to sustain the life of their strapping 1.8-metre son by landing him book deals in Britain and the US, has certainly come as a surprise to Chaz’s parents, Tim and Jen. Chaz, 32, grew up on a sheep and cattle farm at the foot of an extinct volcano outside Penshurst in the Southern Grampians and long wanted to be an architect. The trouble was, after he graduated from university and went to work for the internationally recognised Melbourne firm Wood Marsh, Chaz began to suspect he might not make a very good architect.

“I would do a drawing and check it three times and give it to someone and they were like ‘no, this is wrong’ and it was missing its plasterboard insulation or something. After a while, I realised a lot of friends were either running their own projects in bigger firms or starting their own firms, while I was just treading water,” he affably admits.

Chaz decided to take himself off to Britain while he

was still under 30 and eligible for a two-year visa. There, he did much the same “only it sounded slightly better because I was living in London”.

It was while sitting at work, keeping track of a group chat among his mates, that Chaz started making illustrated contributions to the banter.

His friends urged him to post his wry observations on everything from dating to the physics of toothpaste on Instagram and @instachaaz made its public debut in August 2015.

“The growth was really incremental. I think maybe I had 2000 followers when Jessica Seinfeld – Jerry Seinfeld’s wife – liked one of them and it doubled. An Irish newspaper and a Russian blog did something and that pushed it up to 6000. Then when Huffpost and Buzzfeed both did articles within hours of each other it jumped to, like, 60,000. Then over the weekend, there were another 30,000 or 40,000 and that’s when the publishers started to get interested,” Chaz says.

He now has 165,000 Instagram followers.

HarperCollins acquired the British and Commonwealth rights to Chaz’s first book in a five-way auction in March last year. A Sticky Note Guide To Life hit bookstores just before Christmas. The US version Ideas Of Note, published by Abrams, is due out in April.

Such is the making of a modern celebrity.

“It is pretty hard to get your head around,” Chaz says. “A friend started sending pictures that equated

To be sure Chaz didn’t get too big for his boots, his dad, Tim, made his own contribution. “When it first started to get big, my father drew a comic in my style in the shape of a thermometer with the red going up and the number of followers on the side and at the top my head getting gradually bigger. I’m like, wow, taken down by my dad on day one.”

In person Chaz is tremendously likeable and relatable and his work is much the same.

“I think there are a couple of reasons why people like

it,” he says. “The first is the hand-drawn aspect and the fact it is on a Post-it note is immediately identifiable. I think people can more easily imagine me sitting at a desk drawing them.

“A lot of the material has that, ‘ah, I do that’ recognition, but then you need some kind of comedic hook. There is observational comedy and then there is observation. I think, in a weird way, while I was stagnating in architecture I was giving myself a degree in comedy.”

Is it sustainable? “Absolutely not,” Chaz chortles. “But I think I’ve got to ride the wave and see where it ends up. My mum has this thing where she will sit me down and ask, ‘So Chaz, what is the plan?’. I’m like, ‘Oh, don’t worry about it, mum, there is a plan’, and there is no plan whatsoever. et’s make one thing clear: Ramblr is not a dating app.

But given the raw appeal of exposed beams and polished concrete, coupled with blue suede stools and a cross-section of tree posing as a bar, it’s a bloody good date place. Some would say Ramblr has vibe. Others might argue the R&B overpowers conversation. But, unless I’m mistaken, you’re here to eat.

If variety is the spice of life, chef Nick Stanton (ex-Nieuw Amsterdam, Leonard’s House of Love) is hot. From charcoal-roasted beans and broccolini with tangy preserved lemon and earthy macadamia cream, to an overflowing kimchi, cheddar and gruyere toastie, dude fooders and vegetarians can break bread together here.

But best skip bread in favour of jewel-like cubes of cured trout with pickled daikon and zesty finger lime. You’ll want crispy pig head fritters too, and mussel casarecce. Ramblr’s soon-to-be cult dish is calamari noodles, thinly shaved into spirals with buttery bone marrow on a blade of kimchi.

I

t’s a new day for White Night. The 2017 edition of the city’s favourite sleepless night is being masterminded by a fresh team, headed by David Atkins. Known for directing and producing large-scale ceremonies around the globe (including those of the Sydney Olympics), David seems an ideal choice to manage Melbourne’s largest street carnival.

“It’s a huge logistical exercise in terms of its footprint on the city,” David says. “There’s only so much you can change, but one of the overwhelming principles we worked with was how we could manage crowds and decentralise things.”

There’s no denying that past carnivals have suffered for their popularity, leading to bottlenecks around Swanston Street. David’s approach has pulled the focus towards the parklands at the CBD’s north and south. As such, his first festival has doubled the amount of programming in Carlton and Alexandra gardens. Those arriving by train are this year encouraged to disembark at Melbourne Central and start by heading north.

Other changes include breaking down the event into four precincts, reflecting visitors’ diverse interests and passions.

Before midnight, the programming is heavily slanted towards families, with projections, exhibits and interactive installations designed to keep parents and offspring equally engaged. David’s advice is to start at the top and work your way down from there.

“You and your kids could easily spend a couple of hours in Carlton Gardens,” David says.

Attractions include the Pyrophone Juggernaut – otherwise known as the world’s largest flame organ. Built from reclaimed metal and scrap and powered by fire, this steampunk machine will perform half an hour of startling and spectacular percussion.

At the other end of the gardens, Nebulous is a towering, mesmeric sculpture crafted from steel and sequins.

Nearby, the living, breathing Sonic Light Bubble invites visitors to trigger a light show by touching its synthetic skin.

The garden’s trees will be strung with Pixel Fruit (interactive LED lanterns) and populated by 40 fluffy possums with glowing electronic eyes. Heading south to Flinders Street, kids might also enjoy Fractured Fairytales – projections showing vivid cartoon spins on classic childhood tales. ●

On the other hand, if you’re coming in to cut loose, David suggests you’ll do best to wait until after midnight. Chances are you won’t have missed anything except the crowds.

“If I wanted to party, I’d be focusing on the music to begin with,” David says. “You can work your way from rock’n’roll and blues and funk at the Bourke Street stage, through classical and folk at Fed Square, down to world music at Birrarung Marr, before taking a chillout pill at the M Pavilion and ending your night with some unplugged performances.”

One of the main musical highlights is Swing City, a dance marathon on Collins Street. Swingers of all ages are invited to strut their stuff to the sounds of big bands from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. Those cursed with two left feet will appreciate the experts on hand to offer tuition. ●

Culture Buffs If high art is more your thing, best start your night’s wanderings at the NGV. A series of events is planned around the gallery’s two big exhibitions – David Hockney and Viktor&Rolf.

“Both exhibitions are just beautiful,” David says. “We’re also doing work on the exterior of the building that plays with the concept of fashion and art intersecting. That’s a bit tongue in cheek, but it’s going to be a really strong projection piece.”

From there, arty types might head towards ACMI for cinematic delights, including Bombay Talkies, an exhibition of 3000 artefacts from the legendary Indian film studio.

While there, you can check out French artist Philippe Parreno’s retrospective Thenabouts or enjoy Mega Mashup Cinema, a series of playful edits including Hell’s Club, in which characters from dozens of Hollywood films are edited into one epic club scene. ●

A

cross a 30-year career, Marina Prior has played some of musical theatre’s biggest roles. Now she’s giving an intimate show for Hamer Hall’s Morning Melodies, in which she’ll play her most revealing role yet – herself.

“There’s a great sense of liberation when I perform in concert,” Marina says. “You tend to sing your favourite songs and ones that have a particular significance to you. When I go to see an artist, that’s the sort of thing I want to know.”

The one-hour show will have an element of memoir, tracking Marina’s musical career from her early days busking as a folk singer, as she shares her favourite songs with help from a string quartet and pianist. While Marina says she enjoys seeing how songs have evolved since she first sang them, she’s never tempted to revisit past roles.

“I’m the sort of person that, if I’ve done something, I like to leave it and move on,” she says. “For me, it’s always about going forwards – or at least diagonally. What excites me is the next role I’m going to sing.”

Finding the next role isn’t always easy for a woman above a certain age.

Marina counts herself lucky to have enjoyed a long and varied career that has branched out into concerts, television and straight theatre.

Later this year she’ll tread the boards in a non-singing role for MTC’s Hay Fever Fever.

“My perfect year is concerts, a musical and a play,” she says. “If you’re waiting for the next musical with the perfect role, you could be waiting a while. I don’t think there’s ever enough roles for older females.”

Her advice to those wanting to follow in her footsteps is to branch out into as many different areas as possible.

“Because I was a young soprano, playing all the romantic heroines, a lot of people told me that was all I could do,” she says.

“I had to really push to do the comic roles and the character roles I wanted to do. It took me quite a few years to gain the self-confidence to stand up and push my boundaries. I would tell young performers now – don’t let other people define you.”● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

MADELEINE WEST

M

adeleine West has a simple outlook on a dizzyingly hectic life: “Opportunities dry up when you’re dead.”

Really dead, that is, not soap-opera dead – which can mean still kicking, should audacious scriptwriters decide. Such is the case with Madeleine’s Neighbours alter ego Dee Bliss, back on Ramsay Street 13 years after a cliff plummet that smacked of a TAC-ad send up (“if you share lingering kisses while driving, you’re a bloody idiot”).

At least that’s what they’d have us believe.

“People are really going to love Dee’s wonderfully convoluted back story,” says Madeleine when we meet at her husband Shannon Bennett’s Parisian chic eatery, Cafe Vue. Dressed down in white shirt and jeans, she’s wide eyed and smiley, partly due to two lattes, but mostly from the thrill of revisiting Ramsay Street, where she’ll act until March, write soon after and then direct in August.

“They film an astronomical six episodes a week,” Madeleine says. “I need to add technical skills to my directing bow; Neighbours is learning on speed.”

She is extraordinarily eloquent, with a warmth that’s more Dee Bliss than Satisfaction escort, Mel, or Underbelly paramour, Danielle McGuire – two of the “more challenging” roles she left Neighbours

to pursue. But like both characters, Madeleine has known dark times: stalkers, hate mail and a terrible accident in which her celebrated face collided with a Sydney bus in 2002.

“When I first saw myself bruised and slashed, I hoped a nurse might slip me a bottle of sleeping pills,” she says. “Then I asked myself why I’d chosen acting – to be airbrushed in magazines or tell stories? Very much the latter.”

After a pause to study the menu, she tells me about meeting Fleetwood Mac backstage last year, with her teary mum. She swoons at the memory. “Jimmy Iovine, Stevie Nicks’ former lover and producer, said that when Stevie went to hotel rooms, she’d diffuse lights with the shawls she carries everywhere. I was wearing one at the time and gave it to her, saying: ‘Stevie, sometimes the lights are too bright.’ She shot me a magical, knowing look.”

While enjoying her return to television as a “somewhat darker Dee”, Madeleine loves that her proudest role, motherhood, has no set script, a truth highligted in Six Under Eight, her book released last year about life with five young daughters and a son, a busy husband, a turtle, a sheep, two ducks and insomnia.

WHERE DID YOU SPEND YOUR FORMATIVE YEARS? A tiny town in Scotland outside of Glasgow.

Burnbank, Hamilton. It was home to miners, steel workers and the unemployed.

WHERE DID YOU ATTEND SCHOOL? Glenlee Primary School in Burnbank – a beautiful old red sandstone building, the walls all tiled in white and green inside, held up by girders and beams as it gradually subsided.

I also attended Hamilton Academy for secondary schooling; it was a grammar school that took the top percentage of kids. The top students went to the academy, the next tier to St John’s Grammar and the rest to the local high school.

My parents refused to allow me to go to the academy as they thought I was getting above myself, and it took the primary school teacher, Mrs Fraser, coming to the door to wrangle with them before I was allowed to attend.

I always wanted to teach – since being a young girl in primary school.

My first teaching job was in Scotland – then Zimbabwe. I was teaching in mud huts with chickens running around and classes of more than a hundred young men who had previously been fighting against the government.

Then we moved to South Africa and, because of apartheid, I chose not to teach until we moved to Australia.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR TEACHING COME FROM? Probably a combination of an interest in people and in ideas. I love to read and find that ideas inspire me – and then the way that young people get excited by ideas re-inspires me.

WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION AT SCHOOL AND WHY? At my own school I loved my art teacher because he was so knowledgeable, and art and English were my twin passions.

I also had a fabulously dry history teacher who told the most amazing stories.

He had a lisp and was terribly academic but out would pop these quirky and subversive stories about people from history that would stay in my head long after the facts had gone.

Every time I turned to write on the whiteboard, the whole class moved their desks and chairs [forward] in unison – silently.

I was nearly pinned against the whiteboard before I realised what was going on, and then neither the kids nor myself could stop laughing at the fact that they had pulled it off with me not realising what was happening.

WHAT DO THE STUDENTS TEACH YOU? They teach me to be hopeful that the world is in safe hands. They teach me to laugh. And they provide me with new music and new ideas and keep me informed about how they view the world.

I worked for two years as a litigation and competition lawyer at Allens (not the lolly company) and then moved to Canberra three years ago to work at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Fiat 500s sell because they’re small, cheap and Ilessguess cute. So what to make of one that’s large, somewhat than cute and costs more than a Commodore?

who’d buy the 500X; anyone who wants to be Iisknow different. In a sea of cookie-cutter blandness, this the rugged individual. It won’t appeal to everyone

but it’s not trying to. It’s the type of car that gets noticed and starts conversations.

Given all the equipment, the 500X can comfortably justify its price; it even has blind-spot warning and there are hundreds of optional bits to personalise it.

The ride is hard, the seats are thin and you can’t lose concentration, especially at speed. But the electronics are easy and intuitive, something of a first for Fiat. The fit and finish is also a step up from cheaper 500 models. Rear seat room is tight – only kids will fit on longer drives – but the boot is generous given the car’s compact dimensions.

The front passenger’s seat folds forward for extra room up back, handy for installing a child seat.

It took a while to acclimatise to the steering and accelerator and, being tall and slab-sided, the car can be knocked about by strong crosswinds. ●

Well, it has all the gear – selectable four-wheel drive, keyless entry and start, navigation, cruise, dual-zone air-conditioning, collision warning and none-too-subtle lane keeping. And rear doors.

This one also gets a solid four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed auto. It’s not quick and can bog down before the turbo cuts in, but power is sufficient for wrangling traffic and well up on the standard 500.

It’s nowhere near as economical though.

Despite a little body roll, the handling is competent. The ride, however, is sharp, even around town and given pretty basic seating this makes it tiring over long distances. It’s intended for the city; behaviour at 110km/h is noisy and rather tentative.

I guess there’s a place for this car. I just can’t imagine who’d buy it with Suzuki Vitaras priced where they are. ●
