elbourne actor Elizabeth Debicki is having quite the year. She started it by playing opposite Tom Hiddleston in big budget BBC spy drama The Night Manager and will end 2016 by filming key roles in Tim Winton’s Breath and the sequel to comic-book blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. In the meantime, she’s back on our TV screens in Foxtel’s The Kettering Incident.

“I’m really excited about Kettering coming out,” the 25-year-old actor says.

“I thought it was such an ambitious piece and such an Australian story, told on a scale we don’t usually see our stories told on. I’m really intrigued to see how people react to it.”

Set in small-town Tasmania, this new Australian drama is a fitting companion piece to the ABC’s extraordinary Cleverman. Together, they prove that we can make telly that is strange, beguiling and unashamedly high-concept, while still playing to the mass market. While comparisons with ’90s hits Twin Peaks and The X-Files are easily made, Kettering is equally driven by the soapy, ratings-friendly melodrama of British hit Broadchurch.

“I think the thing that resonates with people about Broadchurch is that this horrific incident can happen within a small community. That’s the parallel I’d draw with Kettering, but our show is more of a thriller,” Elizabeth says.

Her character, Anna, has fled Kettering

after a childhood incident in which her best friend vanished. For reasons that are best described as mysterious, Anna is drawn back to Tasmania from a London career as a doctor. No sooner has she arrived than another young woman disappears. But is Anna responsible, or is it the strange lights in the sky?

As Anna, Elizabeth gives such an electric, mesmerising performance that it’s hard to remember this is her first lead role on screen. Until now, her career has consisted of smaller parts in which she has often outshone bigger stars, in films such as Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

If Elizabeth seems to be taking it all in her stride, that’s because she’s been preparing for this moment for a very long time. Born in Paris to ballet dancer parents (she moved to Melbourne at age five), she always seemed destined for a career in the performing arts.

“I think theatre was always in my bones; it’s probably in my gene structure. I was on stage as a dancer before I was ever on stage as an actor,” she says. “The memory I have of that first time is quite visceral. I really, really loved being on stage and it felt very normal to me. I don’t want to sound cheesy, but it felt like the place I should be.”

Having originally trained in ballet, Elizabeth was set on a new course by a teacher at Mount Waverley’s Huntingtower School. “When I started taking drama in year 10, I had an amazing teacher, Daniel Borbely. You only get a handful of those

teachers in your life. I remember him specifically talking to me after school, saying I should audition for VCA.” She took his advice to heart, although the odds were stacked against her. She was a year too young, had never been to acting school and her entrance audition ended up being scheduled on the same day as her French VCE exam.

Nonetheless, she won a place.

On graduating, Elizabeth wasted no time making her mark, winning a prestigious role in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Maids (opposite Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert) and the part of glamour girl Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby.

“When you’re at uni and the MTC building is next door, that feels like the highest pinnacle. I don’t want to sound ungrateful, because it’s a miraculous thing as an actor to get any job, but Gatsby was definitely a huge stepping stone. It was a baptism of fire; there wasn’t a lot of time to think about it. I felt like I was falling off a cliff, into this abyss. I didn’t know what it was, but I loved it, all the way.”

While it would be easy to read Elizabeth’s rapid rise in fairytale terms, she insists it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.

“I’m grateful for every time I’ve slipped up so far. Not immediately. I don’t think anybody’s immediately grateful. I think particularly as an actor, when you fail, that’s when you learn things. And when you don’t get given the thing that you want, that’s when you really learn how hungry you are for it. I think it’s just as important to fail at things as it is to be given the opportunity to do them.

Comic books on screen We’ve seen Batman thump Superman and Captain America battle Iron Man. Where do comic book films go from here? They start getting stranger. We’ve already had the fourth-wall-breaking, utterly-unsafe-forchildren Deadpool. Word is, supervillain team-up Suicide Squad has been reshot in an attempt to match its anarchic hilarity.

Freakiest of the new crop is Doctor Strange, due for release later this year. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton, it features a host of parallel dimensions, magicians and reality-bending antics.

There’s a theme of rediscovering old friends to this year’s serve of children’s cinema. The delightful Finding Dory returns us to the submarine world of Nemo and family, while that Harry Potter-shaped hole is filled by Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (starring Eddie Redmayne), a prequel of sorts that returns us to the world of Hogwarts and wizards. More surprising is the reboot of Pete’s Dragon, a much-forgotten Disney flick about a boy and his fiery friend.

Waleed Aly This Gold Logie Award-winner is on his way to becoming Australia’s answer to Jon Stewart. He has an unerring knack of being able to cut through and talk sense on the trickiest of subjects, whether it’s writing a stinging op-ed or speaking straight down the lens to The Project’s young audience.

His success is a reminder that there’s room – more than that, a desperate need – for diverse voices (and faces).

The Girl on the Train When a young woman disappears, the only witness is Rachel (Emily Blunt), who catches a glimpse of something suspicious from her seat on a passing train. The ensuing investigation tangles up the lives of three women: the disappeared Megan, Rachel, and her ex-husband’s new wife, Anna. Based on last year’s best-selling novel

by Paula Hawkins, this twisty psychological thriller, due out in spring, looks set to be this year’s answer to Gone Girl.

Netflix Binge Gone are the days of tuning in next week. Thanks to Netflix, we’re more likely to consume our favourite shows in a single marathon session. This new trend (blamed for destroying the sex lives of TV addicts) isn’t just a case of poor self-control. We’re in boom times for quality telivision. Netflix alone has a wealth of riches to come this year: Winona Ryder in Stranger Things, Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies and Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down.

Rebecca Maddern Fans of Channel Nine’s The Footy Show had the knives ready for its first female host long before her April debut, but Rebecca’s first appearance on the show scored higher ratings than any non-grand final episode in six years. She’s not only firmly established her AFL credentials, but also demonstrated a winning chemistry with her co-hosts.

There’s always something bittersweet about the return of a much-loved drama series.

As great as it is to see old friends, there’s the lurking knowledge that a new season means upturning whatever happiness they found last time around. Picking up 18 months later, we find Nina (Asher Keddie) trying to balance the demands of her job, love life, crazy family and single-parenting. In this week’s premiere, her family is rocked by a terrible secret – but at least there are two new handsome men on the scene.

Quality drama might be retreating to online and cable, but reality TV is bringing home the big numbers for free-to-air. Now in its eighth season, MasterChef remains head of the pack, even if House Rules is currently creaming off some of its audience. It isn’t hard to see why the show has stayed on the boil; there’s character drama, nail-biting competition, endless footage of delectable treats and, crucially, the chance for us to indulge fantasies of becoming culinary wizards ourselves.

Australia’s first woman-owned-andoperated brewery was started by Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen. The duo marked their company’s fifth birthday in June. They also cleaned up at the 2016 Australian International Beer Awards, winning the champion trophy for Medium Australian Brewery, as well as a swag of medals for their ales and specialty beers.

St Kilda hotspot Matcha Mylkbar is leading the charge with a smorgasbord of choices from beetroot to turmeric and, of course, matcha lattes. Meanwhile, local start-up Golden Grind is spruiking the health benefits of its “golden latte”, made with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and black pepper – poured to perfection at Windsor’s Uncommon. Or try the rainbow latte (yes, there’s even beetroot in it) at Brighton’s Too Many Chiefs.

It’s extended to snack foods too, such as The Tucker Gang’s bush tomato popcorn and The Australian Superfood Co’s quandong and kakadu plum bars.

No, it’s not another cross-bred poodle, it’s an excuse to whip out the ol’ spiraliser and give some zucchini a perm. One of the tastier graduates of the #paleo movement (for some reason the “meatza” hasn’t fared as well), this food trend offers an olive branch for pasta lovers who’ve quit pasta. Pour enough hot pasta sauce of your choice over raw zucchini noodles and you can hardly tell the difference. You’ll be able to eat more sauce without loading up on late-night carbs, and get more greens into your diet.

Chefs in the Suburbs Gone are the days of trekking into the CBD for a feed with the fam – look out ’burbs, the chefs are coming. Williamstown has scored Josh Pelham (ex The Estelle) and George Calombaris’ new Hellenic Hotel, Berwick has Shannon Bennett’s former group chef Chris Bonello at MPD Steak Kitchen, while young upstart (ex Estelle) Jake Kellie has set up shop in Pakenham at the Lakeside Mill. I’m not complaining; parking’s easier and the menus please even the fussiest family members.

Fancy Rotisserie Chicken If it’s the simple things in life that have us going ga-ga this year, then roast chook is about as good as it gets. Our top pick for 2016? The book itself, for rumours of its demise have been greatly overwrought. Never mind your e-books and Kindles, nothing beats the tactile pleasure of picking up a crisp paperback or solid hardcover, or of losing yourself between the pages or the stacks in a bookstore. It’s not that the book isn’t back – it never really went away, nor is it likely to.

Lionel Shriver, author of the chilling We Need To Talk About Kevin, turns her gaze on that most load-bearing and flimsy of creations – the economy. Her new book, set in the near future, is a darkly witty look at the collapse of the dollar and one family’s struggle to eke out a living amid the rubble of privilege.

How do you revitalise and update a fantastic, subversive parable of race relations in the ’60s that has waxed and waned in terms of cultural relevancy? You get Ta-Nehisi Coates – recipient of the MacArthur “genius” grant, National Book Award winner and columnist for The Atlantic – to write Black Panther Panther.

Marvel’s rebooted superhero series is one of the most talked-about literary events of the year – the first issue went on sale in April and sold more than 300,000 copies in a month, and has garnered rave reviews.

The year had barely begun when the iconic, shape-shifting, groundbreaking David Bowie passed away at the age of 69. A few months later we lost another visionary when Prince died, aged 57. Millions across the world shared in the grief, and the sting of losing two greats – both of whom were still recording – will hurt for a while yet. But their deaths had their work re-appearing on the charts and on people’s lips – everyone was talking about them and everyone was listening to them.

In 2013, the biggest Beyonce-related video clip news was her august presence gracing the fencepost of a decrepit house in Brunswick.

Fast forward three years, and Queen Bey has adopted the wonderful habit of releasing fully formed albums complete with videos.

Paul Dempsey, the beloved frontman of Melbourne greats Something for Kate, has just released his second solo album, Strange Loop.

Forest bathing The latest fitness trend to hit the US takes cues from the Japanese practice Shinrin-yoku, which translates as “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”. he launch of luxury resort-style living in Melbourne’s largest CBD residential project is attracting significant interest from local and offshore buyers.

When completed, the $2.6 billion West Side Place at 250 Spencer Street will include four striking towers accommodating more than 2600 one-, two- and three-bedroom residences, many with expansive views across the city and the bay, and exceptional lifestyle facilities. West Side Place is under development by Far East Consortium, the Hong Kong-based developer; the design is by architecture firm Cottee Parker, with interiors by KPDO. At West Side Place, the towers’ glass facades are gently angled in distinctive folds, creating a sophisticated texture that weaves through the tower exteriors with soft honey tones highlighting features and break areas.

Each tower has a six-sided floorplate to maximise solar exposure and all bedrooms have natural light.

The project’s first stage includes 662 apartments in 79-level tower one and 707 apartments in 63-level tower two with 4000 square metres of resident amenities over three levels. Tower one is crowned by Ritz-Carlton hotel suites and amenities from levels 64 to 79.

“There are regional purchasers looking for a stylish city weekender close to Southern Cross Station, downsizers seeking a luxury apartment lifestyle, young professionals and mum and dad investors looking for a study base for children.

“The inclusion of The Ritz-Carlton in the project is a major drawcard,” she says.

Car spaces are from $70,000 to $115,000.

n the case of housing estates, the promise of the “best of both worlds” should be taken with a grain of salt.

Country life close to city is often not what you get when you pick up the keys. But that promise is far from shallow at Macleod’s prestigious Springthorpe Estate which is 15, not 50, kilometres from the city.
