Of course The Lane was once the epicentre of Australia’s rag trade, a strip that hummed to the tune of thousands of sewing machines.

Although the rag traders are now long gone, it’s almost as if their ghosts have imbued the street with a fashionable vibe.

These days the machines making Aussie fashion hum are mostly in China and Bangladesh, but the legacy the Flinders Lane rag traders created in stamping Melbourne as Australia’s most fashionable city endures.

It’s that status we’ll celebrate over the next couple of weeks when Melbourne kicks up its heels for Spring Fashion Week.

On the eve of these festivities, it seems fitting to highlight the rare designers who still make fashion in Melbourne. Read about these local fashion heroes in our cover story. ●

not the first or even the fifth time the trees here have copped it from wanton raiders.

But it bewilders me that there is no innate sense of shame or misgiving about destroying something so lovely to stay the hand of the tree-abuser. Have they really been raised to believe that their every little moment of self-indulgence is somehow OK? Is there any guilt at all when they look back at a broken row of trees, at living things killed? Does the laugh die on their lips?

The council was pretty good: it came quickly and replaced all the trees, and now we wait anxiously for these plants to grow enough critical mass to make the odd violent intervention just a flesh wound, as the Pythons would have it.

Is there a saint you can light a candle to in order to keep young urban trees safe, a St Christopher of the Vernal Green? We live in a rather hot and brutal part of town, so while the green canopy we yearned for would still be years away, the seeds had very literally been planted.

But then, returning from work one morning, I noticed that – one after the other – almost all the young trees in my street had been deliberately snapped in half, their young trunks bent and broken, the tree crowns discarded in the gutter.

I have long believed there is a special circle of hell reserved for those who wantonly destroy trees. While living in Sydney, I was astonished to see how common tree-poisoning was in some of the most elite harbourside suburbs; anything for a view, even if it meant slowly murdering a Moreton Bay fig of Gothic proportions, many more than 40 years old, all of them beautiful and commanding.

An old friend was subjected to the most appalling abuse by her tormenting ex-partner when he snuck on to her country property and, in a jealous and vengeful rage, chainsawed every tree. I’ll never forget the look of unspeakable sorrow and horror at the violence, at the loss.

Even at our local park, a morning walk recently revealed a row of young trees had been painstakingly decapitated by some marauding moron. I was, and am, amazed.

he differences I have had with Helen Garner and her celebrated book, The First Stone, are well catalogued, Stone but despite all, I’ve returned again and again to an observation made by a lawyer in the book about his experience at a university college. Asked what his time there taught him, he answers without hesitation: “A complete contempt for property”.

This impulse to trash – so often masculine but frequently feminine, too – has for years bewildered me. I saw it at university myself: a quite manic, unstoppable desire to smash, tear down and ruin whatever you could. Yes, college students seemed to have an almost unquenchable need for destruction, but many others too, and once someone has a skinful that impulse seems to be part of our shared DNA and the impulse rises irresistibly.

I recall this because I saw a sad thing the other day. After months of lobbying by our community, the local council agreed to a new landscaping program and planted hopeful little saplings all along the footpath and down the centre of the road.

I

n a world of fast fashion and made-in-Bangladesh labels, there’s surely something special about the Melbourne designers who are keeping it strictly local.

Gone are the days when Flinders Lane buzzed with the whir of thousands of sewing machines as the epicentre of Australia’s rag trade. Easing tariffs and bargain-basement labour costs have lured the lion’s share of Aussie fashion production offshore. But a small clutch of stalwart style-makers have stood their ground, preferring to support local industry and keep a close eye on production.

Using Australian yarns where possible and local craftspeople, and with a healthy dose of self-belief, they are proving there is a future in local fashion. On the eve of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, three designers explain why they love local. ● jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au

NEVENKA Rosemary Masic’s Nevenka label might be informed by Eastern vintage fabrics, lace and embroidered cottons, but her business is firmly anchored in Melbourne.

The Spring Fashion Week regular, whose label was one of the first Australian brands to be sold on Net-a-Porter, has been committed to local manufacturing since 2009. From her Collingwood studio she employs machinists and cutters to create two collections a year, with a few seasonal drops in between. Now she has introduced a local atelier service.

“It’s been so liberating to create my own atelier within the studio,” Rosemary says.

“I don’t out source anything. It’s all made in Melbourne.”

Rosemary experimented with offshore manufacturing after launching her label in 2006. “I remember being in China and seeing a factory worker scolded over not sewing a Nevenka garment properly. It broke my heart and made me think ‘I can’t do this any more’ – it’s ethically not me at all,” she says.

Rosemary works closely with her machinists. “I have more control and I have a better life for doing what I do,” she says. “I’m making money and I am closer to the supply chain. I’m ethical and pay my employees well.

They are like family. All that reflects in the brand,” she says.

yeojin bae Born in Korea and raised in Sydney, Yeojin Bae chose Melbourne as her base when she launched her eponymous label in 2006. Nine years on, she has become a celebrated designer known for her sharp tailoring and feminine yet edgy silhouettes. Her label is hotly sought after in boutiques across the nation as well as Myer, where it is one of the Australian designer drawcards. Her diffusion line, YB J’Aime, appeals to a broader demographic.

Yeojin seemed destined to make her mark in fashion. An academic high achiever, she was accepted into the prestigious Whitehouse Institute of Design at 15. After graduating two years later, she interned in the US with Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs before returning to Australia to work for Saba and Charlie Brown.

By 2006, she was ready to go out on her own.

“I did experiment with doing some things overseas in the beginning, when I was focusing on a lot more embellishment, but I decided that wasn’t the way for me and for the past five years I have been doing it locally.”

These days she designs her collections in Melbourne and manufactures in Sydney.

There’s an angular precision to Yeojin’s creations. She says manufacturing locally enables her to keep a close eye on her designs. It also means she can quickly boost production of a particular item if demand warrants it.

“The ease of dealing with someone locally far outweighs doing it in Asia because you can have a hands-on interaction with the factory.

They can offer advice about how a style may or may not work with a particular fabric and I can address production issues immediately.

“In China they simply do as you say.

They won’t come back to you if there is something wrong with the production,” she says. “The wealth of experience from local manufacturers means they genuinely impart advice and you get a better finish all round – you and the customer win.” ● » shop.yeojinbae.com

Livia Arena is about as hands-on as they come in fashion. From a two-storey townhouse in Carlton, the two-time finalist in the Tiffany & Co National Designer Award immerses herself in every aspect of creating two seasonal collections a year – from pattern-making and cutting to sampling – before handing over production to local manufacturers.

The 31-year-old began studying arts and finance at University of Melbourne before enrolling in fashion at RMIT. Working in banking helped her save the seed money to launch her label in 2011.

For Livia, manufacturing locally is a practical and ethical consideration. “I like the idea of making in Australia for pure ethical reasons,” she says.

“I tried getting a quote from Hong Kong when I first started, to see how it compared to being made here. But I am such a control freak and handing something over to someone in another country was frightening and didn’t appeal.”

Livia sources fabrics from Asia and from a Melbourne company that imports from Italy. “There are many manufacturers here who are still doing a great job and take pride in their work,” she says.

The local business model suits Livia’s hands-on approach. She immerses herself in every aspect of the process, from customdyeing fabrics and sourcing mohair from her friend’s farm (she dyes and felts the goat hair for the collars on coats) to drafting patterns up to 20 times before they are perfect. ● » www.liviaarena.com

lightly smoked oyster, a sheet of raw turnip and flourishes of sea lettuce. A dessert of beetroot cake crowned with elderberry crystals has us swooning. Laphroaig’s 15-year-old single malt ($165) is the revival of a discontinued line for the 200th celebrations. It’s a blend of single malts that are 18 to 21 years old. It’s complex, with toasty, smoky notes on the nose and in the mouth. It unravels as it builds in the mouth to reveal marmalade and toast, caramel and toffee flavours.

Aged in ex-sherry barrels, Ardbeg’s Uigeadail ($145) is rich and complex, with caramel and cacao and raisin aromas, plus the smoky fingerprint of Islay. It’s incredibly smooth and balanced, with an unctuous mouth feel and flavours that include honey spread on fruit toast and sweet caramel, before finishing with smoky caramel and black olive flavours.

f mystery was a flavour, it would surely be the complex, smoky flavours of Islay whisky.

Islay is a tiny island on the Hebrides on Scotland’s west coast. There are just eight distilleries on the island. Pronounced “eye-la”, more than 200 years ago the island was a popular place to make whisky thanks to its taxation laws.

The Lord of the Isles governed the taxes in Islay, rather than the mainland treasury, and distilleries had to only estimate their annual production to determine the duty.

Surprisingly most distilleries made far more whisky than projected. Ahem.

Islay whisky is known for its extremely smoky characters, which come from barley smoked over the island’s peat.

Early distillers used peat to dry their barley – along with heating their homes, cooking and smoking their fish.

Islay whisky got its big break in 1871 with the outbreak of phylloxera in France which attacked the roots of grapevines and decimated the French brandy industry.

In the 20 years it took for the region to replant with phylloxera-resistant vines,

or many, Tim Conigrave’s Holding The Man is a near-sacred text. The honest, tragic and frequently hilarious memoir, completed by Tim shortly before his death, was the first Australian book to tackle the realities of a gay relationship in the wake of AIDS. When I speak to Melbourne boy Craig Stott, who plays Tim’s boyfriend John Caleo in the new film adaptation, he says he was blissfully unaware how cherished the book was.

“Prior to the audition, I had no idea,” Craig says.

“It was only when I told people I’d got the job that so many came out of the woodwork and said, ‘that book changed my life’.”

Craig says he worked hard to make his version of John true to life. He spent time with Tim (played by Ryan Corr) and John’s friends and family, reconciling their different perspectives into a fully rounded character.

He’s been delighted by the reception his performance has received.

“You have a great responsibility, knowing these people actually walked the earth, to get the approval of those who knew them. In terms of anything any review says, it’s going to come second to that approval.”

He ended up becoming so attached to John that he struggled filming the final, heartbreaking scenes.

“I was crying quite a lot, out of the blue, because this beautiful boy that I’d known called John, who I’d been with for a year, was going to leave me now.

I’ve certainly set the benchmark in terms of how much I care for a character.”

Early reviews of Holding the Man have been – quite rightfully – rapturous, but Craig says he knows the film isn’t your typical screen romance, particularly when it comes to Australian movies.

“People have touted this as the great Australian love story but I think in many ways it’s unAustralian, given its subject matter. There are huge portions of the population – this infiltrates to the highest levels of government – who don’t view gays as part of our culture, but rather seek to marginalise them. Whoever you are and whoever you choose to love, you’re still going to experience the same hardships, the fear of loss, the same joys.

I

’ve just paid a physiotherapist to hurt me. The other adult in this house has also done the same thing for our family’s six-monthly check-up at the dentist, which I might add he organised for a Saturday morning.

That’s what it’s become around here. We are putting up with a level of pain for the greater good. Yay us.

These things have had a knock-on effect. The physio told me my back would behave better if I did some swimming, so I enlisted the other adult for support. When we got to the pool we were told the indoor one was closed for kiddie lessons, but we could use the outdoor pool.

It is winter, we told them, a truism they’d evidently heard before because they smiled and said it is actually warmer in the outdoor pool than out. We already had our togs on so, strangely, and completely out of character for both of us, we just did it.

It is amazing how good you can feel about yourself by simply doing a couple of laps of

a pool in winter (although I do question my use of the word “simply” here). Good pain, we said, we are conquering good pain.

So then we decided to relinquish our Saturday sleep-in to go to have our teeth scraped. As a family. It will be good for us, we said, we will bond as we wait for each other to come out of the pain-chambers. We can watch daytime chat-show reruns and calm each other as we anticipate the possible news of the need for fresh fillings. We can discuss dental hygiene issues as we sit on the cold leather couches while the rest of the world is still snoozing or sipping coffee in their PJs. What fun. But we’ll feel better afterwards, because at least we won’t have to do it again for another six months.

But again, knock-on effect. The dentist had just watched That Sugar Film. She told us all about the teenager who drank so much Mountain Dew he had to have his entire set of teeth pulled out.

So, we went home and we watched That Sugar Film too, and possibly because we still felt the shine of sanctimony from the cold swim, we decided we were all going to try to eat less sugar. And that could well prove to be the greatest pain of all.

But that clever little film had us all freaking out about hidden sugars, and even though we eat very little processed food, or so we thought, a quick inventory told us otherwise.

So no more bowls of ice-cream for dessert, or low-fat yoghurt and cereal I thought were OK but are actually laden with sugar.

And no more bikkies for recess. My eight-year-old is the slow adopter of the family. She says recess is all about sugar, so she’s going to get a bit of a shock when she opens her lunch box today.

The promise Mount Baw Baw promises fun in the snow for all levels of skiers. That’s good for this family as I’m like Bambi on skis, my four-year-old daughter, Stella, has never set foot on the snow and my Canadian husband skis like a pro.

The reality On day one, Stella and I take to the slopes for a beginners’ lesson while hubby goes off in search of black trails. My lovely Glaswegian instructor makes me feel less like a klutz by guiding me through the finer art of falling in snow without dislocating a disc. Stella jumps on the “magic carpet” ski lift and scoots down the other side (it must be the Canadian half). Hubby, meanwhile, returns looking puffed and chuffed with himself. Day two is more relaxing for Stella and me as we take to tobogganing, then embark on a thrilling husky sled tour with Jake, who runs Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours.

The pay-off All of our varying levels of ski experience are catered for. After a hard day on the slopes we’re well accommodated in the cute Frosti

Lodge, which we share with a family of five who have travelled the 2½ hours from Melbourne. Stella sings Frozen songs with the kids, while my husband and I have a nice glass of red with the adults and talk about our day.

The pain factor Any tired muscles are quickly soothed with a dip in the Rock Pool Spa. It’s the perfect way to relax at the end of the day.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Mount Baw Baw is great for day-trippers or even better if you want to stay overnight.

It offers something for everyone without breaking the bank. There are smiles of encouragement rather than sneers of disdain as we tumble and bumble our way down the slopes. W

hen Samantha Duncan and her identical twin, Laura, were in year 12, neither wanted to top the other’s ATAR score.

The sisters had always been close, but what happened next took it to another level.

Laura’s results arrived first by text and when Samantha’s arrived soon after, they did a double take. Despite taking some different subjects, they achieved exactly the same result – 91.9.

Samantha had studied English, literature, history, psychology and maths methods, while Laura did specialist maths, maths methods, psychology, English and health and human development.

“I looked at the screen and I said ‘I got 91.9’ and she said ‘no, that’s what I got’,” Samantha says. “It was absolutely bizarre. We both sort of felt that we didn’t want to beat each other … because we’d feel bad.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, both are now teachers. Samantha teaches English and is English key learning area team leader (seven-12) and a year 10 home-room teacher at Catholic Ladies’ College in Eltham, while Laura teaches maths and co-ordinates social justice activities at Marcellin College.

The sisters have always shared a special bond. As toddlers, when Laura burned her hand on a wood fire at home, Samantha literally felt her pain.

“She had to go to the hospital,” Samantha says. “My auntie was holding me and I was screaming and holding my wrist.

“We’ve got a sense of when each other isn’t well or is down. There was a case when Laura fainted … when she was getting her earrings taken out for netball. I just knew that she’d fainted.”

Now 26, Samantha and Laura grew up in Broadford, about an hour north of Melbourne, with their older brother, Tom, now 28. Their father, Peter, is a diesel 20 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ AUGUST 26, 2015

mechanic and their mother, Rosemary, helps him run his business.

The girls spent prep at Broadford Primary School before moving to St Patrick’s Primary School in nearby Kilmore. “We used to get the bus every day,” Samantha says.

Samantha and Laura were in the same class until grade 4 and were always close. So close, in fact, that Samantha was once accused of copying her sister in a maths test, despite being at the other end of the room.

“It was grade 3 … we’d done a maths test and it was out of 20. We got the same result and the same questions wrong. The teacher … said we had to stop copying each other.”

Tom, Samantha and Laura attended high school at Assumption College, where Samantha loved English and Laura maths.

They shared a strong group of friends and played volleyball and netball; Laura was a goal shooter and Samantha a defender.

Apart from that, they were very similar and never jealous or overly competitive. “We’ve never had any sort of issues,” Samantha says.

“She’s my best friend. Everyone sort of needs a best friend, but for Laura and I we sort of had each other.”

The pair were so hard to tell apart as small children that one set of grandparents mixed them up and an uncle used to draw an S and an L on their foreheads. “It took dad four years to get it right,” Samantha says.

Tom could tell his sisters apart from a young age but most teachers couldn’t, which led to some fun and games in swapping classes. When Samantha didn’t want to recite a year 10 French poem in front of her class, Laura did it for both of them.

She changed her hair slightly and recited the poem twice, scoring a B as Samantha and then an A as herself, explaining the lower mark as a practice session before hers. By then she was more comfortable with the audience.

“Laura was probably a bit more rebellious,” Samantha says.

Samantha loved school and was school captain at primary school and a house captain in year 12.

Encouraged by her year 9 science and home-room teacher, Steve Murphy, when she and Laura were in year 10 they began tutoring pupils at the local Broadford Primary School.

Samantha would take a group of students for English and reading, then Laura would cover maths.

Samantha had considered being a doctor or nurse, but Steve’s encouragement and the tutoring opened her eyes to teaching.

Some students had difficult backgrounds, so it was not easy. But they appreciated her Identical twin: Catholic Ladies’ College English teacher Samantha Duncan.

After finishing school, the sisters also tutored Assumption College boarders in maths and English.

In year 11, Samantha and Laura represented their school at a Catholic youth festival in Cologne, Germany. They met people from around the world and saw Pope Benedict.

“That was really special,” Samantha says. “He got quite close to us. There were millions and millions of people. It was amazing.”

After many years apart, Samantha and Laura studied maths methods together in year 12. They then attended La Trobe University – Samantha doing a double degree in teaching/ arts and Laura in teaching/science.

The girls had their own identities at university, but people occasionally approached Samantha to talk about science.

“I’d have to interrupt them and say ‘actually I’m a twin’,” she says with a laugh. “I remember this one girl effectively ran away.”

During their third year at university, Samantha, Laura and Tom, a diesel mechanic like his father, left home and set up house in Reservoir.

he following year, Samantha and Laura joined a 21-day Contiki tour through Europe. The trip was exciting and eye-opening, apart from the day Samantha fell ill. “We were driving up the Swiss Alps and I’d never felt so sick in my life,” she says.

In 2010, during their final university year, Samantha and Laura applied for different schools. With maths/science specialists in demand, Laura quickly scored a job teaching maths at Marcellin College. She now teaches religious education as well and runs the school’s social justice program.

After an exhaustive effort, Samantha was excited to find an English/humanities position at Catholic Ladies’ College. The school was a good fit with her Catholic values and experience and she knew it had a good reputation. “I think CLC was my 37th job application,” she says.

Samantha got the job and started in 2011.

Once over the inevitable first-year nerves, she loved everything about her job and the school.

At just 22, it was a steep learning curve but she was a natural.

Having supportive colleagues helped.

Catholic Ladies’ College is known for its close-knit community and student pastoral care, which rubs off on the teachers. “They

were great,” Samantha says. “All my classes were really good. The staff here are just so welcoming. You fit in quite quickly.”

Samantha took up netball again three years ago and in 2012 she, Tom, Laura and Laura’s partner Jarrod visited the US. They loved Las Vegas and New York, but were a bit disappointed with Disneyland, where queues were up to 90 minutes long: “You had to wait so long to do anything.”

Also in 2012, Samantha became CLC public speaking co-ordinator. In 2014, she took on the role of English key learning area team leader as English co-ordinator Christine Crowle wound back her responsibilities.

This year, at just 26, Samantha began co-ordinating English at all year levels – an enormous responsibility at such a young age. She still takes four English classes and collaborates with her colleagues about course content and which books to study.

This month Samantha introduced a CLC writers’ festival and with her colleagues is working on a new VCE study design, and comparative text studies for the lower year levels.

“It is such a good opportunity,” she says.

“I’ve changed quite a bit from the start of the year. My confidence has grown a bit. It really is about the students and, if you keep the students at the centre of all your decisions and what you do, you tend to do a decent job. It’s going well.”

Samantha and Laura are still close but developing their own dynamic careers.

They have also changed their natural brown hair colour to help people tell them apart.

Samantha’s is a darker brown and Laura’s is a few shades lighter.

At school, Samantha is thriving in a role that allows her to set CLC’s direction in English. But nothing beats being in the classroom to help girls at all levels, whether they are struggling or displaying special talents. Seeing them improve with effort, regardless of their natural ability, is one of the highlights of her career so far.

Terry Vale, an industrial artist, and Kirstie Land, a photographer, live in the same Eaglemont apartment block and became friends after discovering shared passions for classic cars and art.

I have recently come back to Melbourne and, having lived in Ivanhoe a few years ago, I know and love the area.

Terry’s flat is under mine and I have said hello a few times and stopped for a chat. One day I saw him walking down the driveway with an old friend and it turns out Terry is my friend’s uncle. That really opened up a convo for us and we discovered we are “I HAVE both creative types.

I work as a freelance photographer, capturing weddings, engagements, birthdays, kids and real estate. I have been building my company for a little over two years.

I have Terry’s art hanging in my house. I love it, and show it to friends. It’s very popular and good to give him feedback.

We’ll continue to share our ideas and show each other current work. I plan on helping him by getting his website up and running and he’ll help me look at Valiants that are for sale as I’m looking to buy. ●

I’ve been in the area about seven years, after moving here from Hobart. I had family a bit further out north but decided to try something different. I just love walking around the parklands and rivers, and looking at the architecture.

Kirstie moved in recently and saw me doing some sculptural stuff. We hit it off talking about old Valiants. We’re both creative people.

My art comes under the industrial genre.

I’m all about getting into recycling and using recycled products. I find that subconsciously my emotions reveal themselves in my work.

Kirstie and I have a lot of similarities and she has a really good eye. She tends to see things in a slightly different way; she did one amazing wedding photo where the couple was standing quite a distance from this massive, beautiful tree.

There’s a bit of an age difference between us but it’s nice to relate to someone younger.

here are plenty of myths about outback driving. You don’t need a four-wheel-drive to get to Birdsville; the 843 kilometres from Charleville is mostly gravel but it’s fast, wide and smooth.

Nor do you need a macho truck to do Highway One, it’s good-quality sealed road for all of its 14,500 kilometres.

Perhaps. But once you’re out in the great Australian vastness you’ll want to branch out. If that includes the Bungle Bungles or Kakadu, or moseying down to the Wolfe Creek crater or paddling the Tunnel Creek tunnel, or turning north from the Nullarbor to see the Indian Pacific pass by at Cook on the longest straight stretch of railway line in the world (478 kilometres), you’ll need something a bit tougher, higher and better at handling dirt roads than a city buzz box.

Especially if it’s the wet season. The wet season, by the way, isn’t winter.

Highway One is arguably the world’s greatest epic drive. It is unarguably the longest. The Trans-Siberian Highway is 11,000 kilometres, the Trans-Canada Highway a mere 8000. Highway One is the world’s longest national highway and it visits every state including, yes, Tasmania.

If you live in the city and have a hankering for the outback, are there vehicles that can sneak into any parking spot at Chadstone but still won’t get them giggling at the Sandfire

roadhouse, 2123 kilometres from Darwin, 1920 kilometres from Perth?

Some parameters. Diesel engines are more economical, petrols cost less. You’ll need luggage space. While you might get by with front-wheel-drive, 4WD is handy, especially in sand, dust and tropical flash flood rainstorms. You’ll need a full-size spare wheel. If you’re tempted by places like the Gibb River Road, you’ll need two. Anything on run-flat tyres is not recommended. Look for a snag-free underbody without suspension arms or exhaust pipes hanging down.

If the worst happens you should be driving something that won’t confuse mechanics a long way from an authorised dealer.

SKODA YETI

For the totally committed

NISSAN X-TRAIL

S M AL L \ T W O AD U LT S I’m very fond of Hyundai’s ix35 but my pick is Skoda’s Yeti. It’s comfortable for passenger and driver, it’s well shaped for luggage and while it only has a temporary spare tyre, the wheel is full size. It’s surprisingly dynamic too but the ride can get sharp over second-class roads and corrugations. The Yeti is priced from $23,990 to $30,990. Go with the cheapest one, a 2WD with a manual gearbox. The ix35 2WD, with a full-size spare, starts at $25,990.

ME D I U M Mazda’s CX5 is the best of the lot for city folk but could be a handful for bush mechanics.

Subaru’s Forester and Nissan’s X-Trail won’t be and I’m giving the gong to the X-Trail because of its excellent cargo room, its value, its clean underbody and its all-round ability.

TOYOTA LANDCRUISER

But mostly because it can be put in the more economical 2WD mode on the highway. The 4WD models will get anywhere most people want to go. Good economy, good ride, good quality. Warning: you’ll need to buy a full size spare. X-Trails cost from $31,215 to $48,965.

Go for the 4WD ST at $37,297.

There are really only two to choose from, Toyota’s LandCruiser and Nissan’s Patrol. Both will go practically anywhere, both are complemented by a huge range of off-road accessories and both are familiar to mechanics out where the crows fly backwards. My choice is the Cruiser because Patrols are no longer available in diesel.

Both of these use vast quantities of non-renewables, but the diesel Cruiser uses less. Don’t buy one unless you go outback regularly.

Or tow a large boat. $81,232 to $123,312. The $88,596 GXL is worth the extra over the GX. ●

The big winner

L ARG E Mitsubishi’s Pajero is outstanding value and has genuine off-road cred, but I’d go with Nissan’s cheaper Pathfinder for its combination of power, size, off-road ability, comfort, towing capacity and value.

Pathfinders are easy and friendly to drive and park, and well-equipped. The 4WD system is simple and effective, and the car also rides well. They cost from $43,905 to $74,879. Go for the ST 4WD at $48,553.● reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

ome stopped in their tracks. Others simply raised their eyebrows and nodded, acknowledging that something has worked perhaps better than even the builder had expected. Such was the reaction of buyers viewing this property’s expansive back deck for the first time.

The deck is not just bigger than expected; it flows seamlessly from the kitchen as if it were another indoor living space. You can already picture yourself cooking up a storm for guests in the outdoor kitchen and bar area, which has a built-in barbecue, or putting up your feet in front of the TV that has been cleverly installed on the southern wall.

You could easily see the bathroom, with its freestanding bath, geometric tiling and bespoke timber vanity, in glossy brochures promoting five-star holidays to the red centre or top end. But it’s likely the builder found his inspiration much closer to home. Out in the big backyard are two soaring ghost gums. These striking trees are common in this prestigious pocket of Macleod.

The trees – and the birds they bring – are part of what gives Stewart Terrace its reputation as one of the best streets in the area. Another factor is, of course, the proximity to Macleod College, train station and shops.

While the aesthetics of this place make a big first impression, it wasn’t the builder’s sole focus. He also cleverly reshaped the interiors to increase the size and flow of living spaces. What was once an old garage is now the main bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite.

The more modest street-facing bedroom next door would make an ideal nursery, and the other two bedrooms are great for older children or guests.

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses.

Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.�
