Fence across the world a safety idea is now a global business, writes GAIL THOMAS

I

t began when his mother’s horse collided with a fence – no winners there!

Thinking outside the square, Jack Fitzgerald, who was 16 at the time, came up with the innovative safety solution of a PVC plastic strip that easily clipped to an existing fence making it more visible to humans and animals.

This simple yet effective idea set Jack on a career path of “courses for horses” that 14 years on is taking him to the world market.

His business, Think Fencing, has led this entrepreneur to develop a comprehensive range of products for rural, equine and domestic use resulting in him becoming the Australian market leader for PVC equine fencing.

Based in Portarlington, Jack is now taking his locally made products to the world.

“Think Fencing was established to provide super-safe, strong and durable fencing for horses. We’ve now added these same benefits into our domestic products with everything made right here in Portarlington,” Jack said.

Along with the Timberline PVC post and rail stand-alone fencing system, there’s Equi rail and Zappa rail products. These are flexible so when a horse comes in contact with the rail it acts like a safety belt, flexing to absorb the impact and energy then rebounding to its original shape.

Jack has made trips to Dubai, Inner Mongolia and the US exploring potential export opportunities, and

sales of the entire range of residential and rural fencing are starting to accelerate.

“We’ve gained significant momentum in the last two years with the bulk going out as PVC running rail, which we’ve created with Simtrack who are a big starting-gate manufacturer. We’ve sold to South America, Singapore and Vietnam and we currently have samples with Royal Ascot which is really exciting.”

In the US during the past 20 years, PVC fencing has traditionally been made by pipe manufacturers and only in white as that’s what the US wanted and everyone else followed, but Australians want a range of colours.

Jack’s company has managed to solve one of the industry’s technological hurdles and devised a way to use dark colours while keeping the polymer cool so it doesn’t distort.

“It looks like we’ll be selling to the US later in the year and we’ve had a lot of interest from southern Asia. We also have a tender out to the Asian Games to do all the arenas for their equestrian site.

“Currently we are filling a container to go to Israel.

The company saw our manufacturing facility and range of amazing colours and were impressed by the technology that no one else in the world is doing.

“With the low Australian dollar it was an easy decision to go with us. They are mainly using our domestic products as they have a very similar climate to Australia with really hot summers and cold winters.

With our technology built into the profile it will last in harsher environments, unlike other products.

“We are also looking at getting products into Dubai.

Vietnam is a market and Hawaii is looking at taking the residential range.”

The 60th anniversary of TV’s arrival in Melbourne has prompted Geelong-born/bred pop culture buff Derham Grove to mount an exhibition, Tee Vee at Sixty Sixty, looking into the box’s beginnings.

It features early fixtures such as newsreaders Eric Pearce and Geoff Raymond, TV series such as The Tarax Show Show, The Mickey Mouse Club, Hopalong Cassidy and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, TV dining and TV knitting.

Derham’s got his hands on a few vintage TV sets – AWA, PYE and an Astor. He has also snaffled some 500 black-and-white images of events, people and places originally used to illustrate stories on GTV-9’s news bulletins.

Good stuff, all of it, and presently on show in the Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne where Derham is a senior lecturer in architecture.

TV has changed significantly down the years, of course. The Marveer-polished 26-inch timber-grained jobs have been superseded by giant plasma home theatres. By contrast, you can watch it on your phone too.

Funny thing about Happy Hammond is that he was on TV in 1948, well before Melbourne broadcasts began, in a closed circuit trial. He wasn’t alone. TV tests had been going on back another 20 years, shortly after John Logie Baird came up with a working TV model in 1926.

Derham says Happy wasn’t always comfortable with kids. On one occasion, it appears he had just cause. As Derham relates: “One segment involved Happy listening to riddles told live to air by children from the studio audience. “‘What did the hurricane say to the palm tree?’ asked one little boy. hicken parmigiana has become the undisputed king of Australian pub fare, with bistros offering diners ever-changing versions of the golden cheese-coated chicken breast. Geelong pubs compete for attention, declaring their specials in daubs of luminous paint. If you’re lucky you might find a venue that throws in a pot of beer for a total of not much more than $13. Feature parmi nights are hot competition and every pub has its own specialty.

As a guide for parmi devotees, The Weekly Review Taste Test Team has done the tough job by sampling dishes right across town. Some serious venues offer more than two dozen varieties of the humble dish.

Chefs in high hats and button-up jackets fuss over dishes and the connoisseur could eat a different dish every night for a month at some venues before exhausting the menu. There are pie floater parmis (with mushy peas and party pies on top), parmis with fried bacon and crisp onion rings, or you can go the naked schnitzel and combine your own sauces.

But, to guarantee a fair comparison, we stuck to the traditional parmi containing a crumbed chicken fillet, tomato puree sauce, sliced ham and grilled cheese on top. It has to be served with chips and a salad, although the greenery can at times seem nothing more than a garnish. Our hungry team rated meals against a checklist of 10 key elements including look, size, taste and tenderness. Points were added for quality of the cheese, ham, tomato sauce, breadcrumbs, and crunchiness and juiciness. Chips were rated for their cut, crispness and flavour. Complemented by a very generous serving of chips, it could probably feed two people with a larger salad made at home. As a whole, it’s an impressive dinner.

The breadcrumbs are golden and coat the parmi well. There’s ample cheese and a good amount of ham and tomato sauce, although the sauce is lacking in flavour. The parmi is crunchy and the flat, chunky chips are impressive. The $15 Parmi Bandit parmi is a well-priced takeaway. Prices range from $13 to $30. Buckley’s Entertainment Centre offers Parmi Night on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There are 25 options. The traditional parmi costs $15 ($24.90 Thursday to Sunday).

And it was one of our runners-up. The chicken breast was large, thickly cut, juicy, tender and had a nice crumbing. It could benefit from more crunch. The tomato sauce was fragrant and fresh with a good sprinkle of herbs. The ham was of good quality and covered the parmi and the cheese was melted perfectly. The crisp and chunky chips were perfect. Overall there is not much to fault. At $15, there was no salad with the meal but this did not detract from the overall dish. A spring onion garnish gave the dish that pop of colour it needed. The Sir Charles Hotham is a rarity these days as it’s an old-fashioned corner pub with no pokies and no trendy makeover. Tables in the dining room are dressed with sheets of butcher’s paper.

Their chicken parmigiana is much like the hotel, with no trendy additions. It’s a generous-sized chicken breast with an even coating of breadcrumbs, topped with a thin slice of ham, a fresh, fruity tomato passata and a layer of melted cheese. Nicely cooked with no dry crusty bits around the edges. The parmi came with chips and a small but fresh salad.

There was nothing exceptional about this parmi, but it was nicely prepared and filled this hungry customer on a cold August night. Meals are affordable, as is the modest wine list.

The Wharf Shed Cafe offers great value for money, with a normal parmi costing $19.50 for lunch and dinner across seven days. If you are feeling really hungry, you can opt for the monster parmi for $25.50. The plate was stacked with chips and side salad, and the normal parmi offered a decent breast portion. It was tender and of average thickness – enough to fill you. The tomato sauce had great flavour. It was topped with a thin slice of ham and there was a good amount of cheese – tasty and mozzarella – that was nicely grilled. The parmi had good crumbing and crunch. The chips were big, however, and could do with a little bit more crisping. The salad included lettuce, red onion, carrot, tomato, cucumber and dressing. Add to that halved cherry tomatoes and shredded basil. The eggplant is tender, juicy and full of flavour. Combining all these elements in each mouthful provides a taste sensation.

The chips are extra long, crisp and hot. The salad is served on the same plate and contains freshly cut cucumber, red onions, tomato and a mixture of green leaves. The dressing comes in a small jug on the side to flavour as you wish. The eggplant parmi is exceptional value at $14. On a Thursday night, all tables were filled. or the past 11 years, Nicole Shortis has been rolling bowls down the green in Wangaratta, Melbourne, Leopold and all over Australia.

The 44-year-old started the sport when a knee reconstruction rendered netball no longer viable.

“Bowls looks like it would be easy but when you play it and you realise it’s not that easy, it really sucks you in because then you think, ‘How do I get better at this?’,” she says.

Nicole has played in the Victorian State Sides competition every year bar one since 2008. She has travelled all over Australia with the team, regularly competing in South Australia, NSW and Tasmania as well as at the Australian Sides Championship in April each year.

Nicole was also part of the National Training Centre program squad, which sits under the Australian team, for two years. She is set to re-trial for the Victorian State Side, which is made up of 12 players, in October.

“My role now in the team is to support the young ones and to maintain a consistent player in the team. The goal is to keep playing for the Vic team as long as I can.”

Nicole started playing bowls while living in Wangaratta and then played for the Glenroy Bowls Club for five years. She also became the bowls co-ordinator for Fitzroy, Victoria.

“I believe I was the first female bowls co-ordinator in Victoria,” says Nicole, who is coming into her third season as the Leopold Sportsmans Club Bowls co-ordinator.

“I wanted to get away from Melbourne and get back to being in the country. Having grown up in Apollo Bay, I wanted to be closer to home and closer to the sea and beach

Since starting at the club, Nicole has brought the average age of players down by 20 years and introduced training buddies to encourage members to train more often.

“We have also increased our membership by about 30 people,” Nicole says.

“My role is to involve the community. We have disability groups regularly come to give bowls a go, use the club and the facility. The whole community can enjoy what we have.”

Nicole says she is extremely lucky to

have a job where she is involved in meeting and talking to new people each week.

“It’s amazing the friendships you make with people through bowls. One of my best friends is 75. The oldest member is 95 and I’ve seen him run down the green and jump over the bowls,” she laughs, adding that her son, Charley, 13, has just taken up the sport too.

Throughout the season, Nicole trains up to five days a week and plays about three times a week. She will play in the Division 2 Saturday Pennant next season with Leopold when it

starts on October 8. And while Nicole is doing great things on the field, she also coaches juniors at the club. She introduced the Leopold Junior Squad in 2014, which has eight members ranging from eight to 16 years old, and coached the National Physical Disability Side from 2012-16.

“I always wanted to give back and my satisfaction comes from seeing others succeed in the sport,” she says.

Nicole says with the facility shared by a number of sports, more than 5000 people come through the Leopold club each week for meals, sport and social activities.

“We want a club of social people – not necessarily the best bowlers – and to create a nice family environment. ood and wine lovers are in for a treat over coming weeks when Terindah Estate on the Bellarine Peninsula opens its doors for Friday night degustation dinners.

The award-winning boutique winery on a 40-hectare property with sweeping views across Port Phillip Bay has always been a lunch destination but recently decided to open for dinner after demand from loyal customers. The dinners will be available until the end of September as the winery has many private events and weddings booked on weekends in the warmer months.

Guests to Terindah Estate can enjoy weekend breakfasts, lunches from Thursday to Sundays and now Friday night dinners in the winery’s cafe The Shed@Terindah.

Once a 1950s hay shed, the space was renovated and transformed into the cafe that has beautiful views over the vineyards and water. In the warmer months diners can enjoy their meals in the outdoor dining area.

The property also includes a cellar door in the main building and a large function room, which can cater for 200 people for weddings and other events. The winery is also family-friendly with its large lawn for children to run around on as well as games for the kids to play.

Terindah Estate uses the highest-quality seasonal and local produce, which is reflected in its winter menu.

Local suppliers include Drysdale Cheeses, Hopkins River Beef and White Fisheries. They also use an abundance of fresh herbs grown on their property. Friday night diners can choose from a three-course menu for $60 a person or five-course degustation menu LYNDON for $95, with estate-made wines matched to each course for an additional cost.

The degustation menu features similar dishes to the lunch menu from Thursday to Sunday. There’s also a $20 express lunch special on Thursdays and Fridays. Entree highlights include heirloom tomato, basil, Drysdale goat’s curd and jamon ($15)

and freshly shucked Pacific oysters ($11).

Popular main dishes are kangaroo with baby turnips, roasted onion, white onion puree, salt bush, salty ice plant and Warrigal greens ($36), potato gnocchi with gruyere, zucchini and pumpkin ($26), snapper with spinach, potato, clams and mussels ($35) and confit duck with heirloom beetroots ($34).

There are also side dishes such as roast potatoes, harissa and aioli ($13) and Chinese broccoli with soy mirin dressing ($12).

Winter dessert delights are BETTS the poached Corella pear with buttermilk ice-cream and oat crumble ($14) and the chocolate and orange cake with smoked vanilla ice-cream ($16). The children’s menu includes Irrewarra sourdough cheese toastie ($8) and chicken tenderloins with crisps and salad ($12).

They are among 3000 students from more than 200 government schools performing in the September 10 show, titled The Elements, at Hisense Arena. Audiences can expect to see earth, air, fire and water combined with the periodic table of elements.

The three-hour show will feature vocals, high-energy dance, magic tricks, skating and even a giant robot cat puppet. There is a 64-piece orchestra, 1300-voice choir, 1200 mass dancers, 30 lead vocalists, 16 ensemble dancers, eight backing vocalists, 22 roller skaters and 10 puppeteers.

Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College is sending Ariana Conroy (production crew), Delia McBurney (principal vocalist/ensemble vocal), Charlotte Kitchenman (musician/tenor saxophone) and Emily Kitchenman (Victorian State Schools Choir).

“This year, we had the excitement of becoming a third-generation family business, with Helena’s daughter starting on reception,” Joe says.

“Most of the team is not related but everyone is considered family.”

Joe says his company prides itself on family values and creating success for both employees and clients.

What he enjoys most about his job is fostering the relationships with colleagues and clients. It’s something he learnt from his dad.

“Real estate is all about people. As tough as it can be sometimes, it can be incredibly rewarding and extraordinary because we are often present during some of the most memorable moments in a person’s life. Helping someone achieve their goals is absolutely the best part of this job,” Joe says.

His business celebrates its third birthday next month and Robbie says winning the Hospitality and Tourism section of the Business Excellence Awards is recognition for the success of his operation.

“It’s great to be recognised,” he says. “It certainly

helps us to build our reputation, which is developing now far beyond Geelong. We’re attracting a ton of attention from interstate and Melbourne, mainly through social media. The whole competition process has helped us to develop our business. From the minute we had the induction, we were implementing new things. It has helped to fine-tune and develop our operation. The couples battled budget blues and extreme deadlines to finish a 48-hour challenge in the opening episode. Each couple renovated a pod from scratch into a bedroom/ bathroom to live in for the next few weeks.

The winner of the 48-hour challenge got first choice of their apartment. Some apartments are big with high ceilings; some are really open and light, which made it a hard choice this year.

First prize went to Chris and Kim, who chose Apartment 5 (the biggest). Next was Julia and Sasha who took Apartment 4 (having the best position). Dan and Carleen opted for Apartment 2 with the original vault, which was installed just under 100 years ago. They are entitled to whatever they find behind the 400-kilogram door.

Ben and Andy came fourth in the challenge and chose Apartment 3, which is similar in size to Kim and Chris’s but on

And the other Victorian pair is Geelong friends Andy Sunderland and Ben Toyne, both 25, who can be considered this year’s everymen. If the show is aimed at an audience of renovation experts who haven’t quite got around to picking up a paintbrush, then it’s hard to pick a closer fit than these two.

“We have no renovation experience, we don’t know how to build anything,” says Andy. “I did year 12 wood tech where I built a coffee table and it took me 12 months and we’re doing an entire build in 10 weeks.”

These long-time mates, who until recently were teaching at the same primary school, are an appealing testament to the power of self-belief. When Sasha and Julia are asked about their design choices, they rattle off a shopping list of influences. When Andy is asked for his inspirations, he says “Pinterest”.

“Everyone, when they walked through the building, was like ‘heritage this, heritage that, art deco this’. Ben and I were looking at each other going – we don’t know what’s going on!”

Sasha says living on the building site at the beginning was just horrific. “And then moving down to the apartment … the minute you walked out, it was just crazy dirt and rubble, no plumbing. And we’re clean. Our house is spotless, everything in its place, there’s no dirt anywhere and this is just filthy.” Julia says the pair haven’t always handled the myriad challenges with impeccable grace. But she also knows that part of the lure of The Block is watching ordinary people crack under extraordinary stress. “You’ve got to give the people something to watch, that’s my motto. And we’ve given them a lot to watch.”

This type of media savvy extends to understanding that there’s another good reason the two beat thousands of entrants to compete on the show. “I think it probably helped that we are a same-sex couple,” Sasha says. “And we’re kind of funny.”

his year’s season 12 of The Block is a massive enterprise with five competing couples. Hundreds of construction workers have done the hard yakka inside, outside and on top of the former Velvet soap factory in Port Melbourne.

The industrial gothic facade was shown to viewers behind scaffolds and a gauze wrapping on Sunday night’s opening episode. The decor might best be described as “post-apocalyptic disarray”. The factory’s gutted interior is a mess of cables, props and brick dust. The feature staircase and luxury foyer look like something Indiana Jones would give his prized fedora to explore.

Channel Nine has been pushing this year’s cast as the show’s most diverse group of contestants yet, particularly in the matter of ability. There are two couples who comprise the Victorian contingent of this year’s cast.

First up are Julia Treuel, 31, and Sasha Wright-Neville, 42, experienced renovators who signed on to make the apartment of their dreams “with someone else’s money”. It’s a dream that has, at times, edged more towards nightmare territory.

MEMORY WALK & JOG Alzheimer’s Australia Vic is returning to Geelong for the third annual Memory Walk & Jog on Sunday, September 11.

Participants can join in a 2.8-kilometre walk or a five or 10-kilometre run at Barwon Valley Park in Belmont.

Among the participants taking part this year is Gail Zalevski, who will be jogging the 10-kilometre run with friends.

Gail is motivated to take part because of her father, 80, who is living with late-stage Alzheimer’s in Scotland.

This is Gail’s second event. She took part, with her family, in Geelong’s first Memory Walk & Jog in 2014.

“It’s predominantly because of my dad.

he world of second-hand goods – in the spotlight for National Op Shop Week – is not as it once was, and the new city Salvos shop might just represent the new world order.

Walk into the Malop Street shop and it’s easy enough to leave any preconceived ideas of op shopping at the door.

For starters, the dust – once a signature feature of op shops – is gone. The products – displayed creatively and professionally – have never looked better.

Soft music plays in the background, friendly faces smile from behind the counter and styled set-ups tempt customers to explore. Yes, that silk scarf is for sale and, yes, it probably costs less than your morning latte.

“We like to put a local community stamp on all our stores. So we like to take a look at what’s happening in that local community and appeal to the needs of those customers.”

Aife says, when opening new shops, it’s always all hands on deck – with the Malop Street outlet being no exception.

“We love it as an opportunity to help upskill a lot of our people, so giving them the opportunity to help set up the new store … it really gives you an understanding on how to build it up from the ground and upskill and

The CBD flagship shop, opened only a couple of months ago, reflects an upmarket aspect that Salvos Stores’ marketing manager Aife O’Loughlin says seems to work well in the area.

It is the latest addition to a growing list of boutique Salvos shops across the country.

“We’ve got a store in Daylesford that has a beautiful feel, a gorgeous sandstone 1800s building in Hobart that’s really, really boutiquey, and a couple of others,” Aife says.

The new Geelong shop represents a new vibrant and exciting environment for op shopping, she says. “We really lucked out when we found the store that we did on Malop Street. It’s a beautiful store, where it’s kind of got a bit of a heritage feel to it. We just loved it.

“When we secured it, we took a look around Geelong and at what was happening

As well as the usual women’s and men’s fashions, there’s a well-stocked book corner and a homewares section towards the back.

Aife believes that such boutique-feel op shops could be more common in the future.

in a lot more op shops as they go along.”

She cites the numerous benefits of op shopping. “It’s clear as day that there’s definitely an environmental benefit to that, if you’re buying second hand,” she says.

“We know that fashion is probably one of the most wasteful industries in the world and fast fashions certainly don’t help that.

“When you shop second hand, you often get quality items that don’t have the same impact [on the planet] … they’ve already been produced and we’re giving them a new lease of life, making sure they don’t go to landfill.”

Perhaps best-known is the charitable aspect of op shopping.

“When you shop with us, we raise money for the Salvation Army programs, so there’s a whole social benefit to it as well,” Aife says.

“That means that the money we raise goes back into programs that help people who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, addiction [and it’s also used for] emergency relief across the country … it all just goes to helping Aussies in need.”

If that wasn’t a drawcard enough, op shops have become fashionista territory. Bloggers,

eco stylists and Instagrammers bring pre-loved style to a digitalised audience.

Aife says that while Salvos shops attract customers from all walks of life, there are also regulars.

“We tend to find the people who love to op shop really love to op shop,” she says.

“They love it because it gives them a sense of uniqueness and a point of difference in their style.”

She says whether it’s nabbing an antique brooch or styling a Salvos find with a classic pair of jeans, op shopping offers a way to reaffirm your personal style.

irst home buyers are flocking to Geelong to take advantage of new land releases, lifestyle and location.

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that Geelong postcodes provide the highest number of first home owner grants of all Victorian regions, despite strong price growth over the past 12 months.

Domain chief economist Dr Andrew Wilson says recent reports show 2677 loans were approved for first home buyers in Victoria over June, the second-highest monthly total recorded this year.

“The June number was also 3.7 per cent higher than that reported over June last year,” Dr Wilson says. “Over the first six months of this year, 14,613 first home buyer loans have been approved in Victoria, which is 873 more or 6.4 per cent higher than the 13,740 recorded over the same period last year.”

The value of the average loan approved to first home owners increased by 6.6 per cent to $347,700. The average first home buyer loan is also now 6 per cent higher than that recorded over the same month last year.

The top regional postcodes over the first three months of this year for first home buyers taking advantage of the $10,000 state government grant were 3217 (Charlemont,

Armstrong Creek, Mount Duneed, Freshwater Creek) with 46 grants, 3216 (Belmont, Grovedale, Highton, Marshall, Waurn Ponds) with 23 grants and 3222 (Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Wallington, Mannerim) with 15.

Deakin University, the new Epworth hospital and Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre are all easily accessible, along with the Surf Coast’s beaches.

“There’s still some really good buying in Belmont with a lot of townhouse developments. And with the land releases in Armstrong Creek and Grovedale too, there’s plenty on offer for first home buyers to make the most of the grant.

Still in Lara, on the other side of the railway tracks, Jayden Roncon (Roncon) fronted a dozen onlookers at 135-139 Old Melbourne Road, where a three-bedroom log-cabin house is on about 3.25 hectares.

“It’s very rare to see eight acres come up for sale so close to Lara,” Jayden said, posting a vendor bid of $500,000.

The Sydney investor from Elcho Road was there but the property was passed in.

Jayden had success earlier in the week, selling 3 Great Britain Street, Herne Hill, prior to auction.

The three-bedroom house and two one-bedroom units on about 600 square metres were snapped up by a local investor for “just shy of $400,000”.

Listing agent Jessica Templeton (Roncon) said a local investor had missed out at several auctions and was taking no chances, making an offer well above range.

Also selling prior to auction was 23 Forfar Road, Hamlyn Heights. Alycia Baines (Barry Plant Geelong) sold the property for $400,000 to Melbourne buyers for a price exceeding expectations.
