The latest AusPost Stamp Bulletin, its cover emblazoned with a stunning caramelbordered rustic butterfly, has its usual array of Australiana.

You’ll find photographer Frank Hurley’s 1914-16 Antarctic images, nostalgic fruitbox labels, Cocos Islands dolphins, RSL centenary stamps … all good stuff.

Recent issues have seen similar gear: museum collections, rugged Aussie islands and lighthouses, the dogs that saved Macquarie Island, bicycles down the years, famous business signs, bush tracks and much more. In short, lots of Australian icons.

People-wise, that same illustrious nature has long been attached to the people you find on Australia’s postage stamps. Olympic or Commonwealth medallists, honours recipients, explorers, scientists, war heroes, mountain climbers, sports legends, historical figures, medicos, politicos, lots of royals.

Now, however, I fear our philatelic

A

curious little parcel arrived on the front door recently, courtesy Allen & Unwin and Australia Post.

It was a book about the first Australian cricket team to tour England – an all-Aboriginal team who’d been coached by one-time Geelong resident and sports hero Tom Wills – the same bloke who is credited with inventing Aussie Rules footy.

Funny how Tom missed out on a mention but it was a kids’ picture book, I suppose, and not big on detail. But it did get me thinking not only how stories might change but how yet another Aussie institution is morphing.

Not just concerning plans to charge punters for picking up parcels left too long at the local post office. Or the cuts to daily mail deliveries to homes. No, I’m talking about stamps; those perforated rain, hail or shine works keeping posties and artists in business, philatelists in raptures and collectors in quids.

They’re changing. And I suspect they might be going the way of the garbo, the milkman, the bread delivery man, who only just

integrity is being assailed by the commercial imperatives of AusPost as snail mail succumbs to email and postie runs to parcel-delivery vans.

Just four years ago, it was a mark of esteem that stamps were issued with the images of sports stars such as Gary Ablett jnr, Ron Barassi, Billy Slater, John Raper, David Campese and Joe Marston. Achievement was the name of the game. Now, stamps have become like bubblegum footy cards.

The latest Stamp Bulletin tells me I can buy a stamp pack for each of the AFL’s 18 clubs, and the NRL’s 16 clubs, with 20 players on each. I can also buy Star Trek, Ice Age and Danger Mouse stamp packs. It’s getting like McDonald’s.

As for the post office, well, I can now get my dry cleaning done there, pay my bills, buy a Tattslotto ticket, newspapers and mags, soft toys and gifts, pies, lollies and ice creams, bread and milk, even do some banking. The old PO has become a multi-function polis, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Fortunately, I can also still get a good chinwag there. Which is handy, even when you want to tell someone the last thing you’ll ever be licking is Nick Riewoldt. Or that Tom Wills deserves a bit more credit for his cricketing contributions.

A typical day for me involves … working with lots of people on a range of activities. In these early stages, I am committing a great deal of time and effort getting to know and to understand the college, its culture and community.

ights, camera, action – the silver screen has burst into life at the Pivotonian Cinema’s new home.

After a turbulent baptism screening independent and art-house movies in Geelong, partners Jessica Litsas and Mark Walker triumphantly threw open the doors at their new permanent home at the weekend. The young entrepreneurs hung the black cinema drapes and made the finishing touches to their latest venture just hours before patrons climbed the stairs above the old Home Pride bakery in Verner Street, South Geelong.

The tantalising aromas of this decades-old brick building seem to linger. In the 1960s and ’70s, Home Pride was baking bread on the site. Today, it’s warm popcorn, hotdogs and fresh coffee. The ambience is relaxed and typically dark with a sweeping stylised bar and orange padded bench seats.

“We’ve got Porter beers with choc-orange flavours just like Jaffas,” proclaims moustachioed Mark, the projectionist and movie buff who revels in the historic connection with movie confectionery of old and the latest in craft beers. Already, there’s a healthy crowd for a chilly Monday afternoon. “We want it to be a cinema for the people of Geelong by catering for what they want to see,” Jessica explains.

“We’re running a good mix of quality, independent, foreign and art-house movies at an affordable price, catering for families, to people in their 20s and 30s, through to older people. Our programming crosses all demographics and the calendar of screening times for the month is on our website with daily updates on Facebook and Instagram.”

The couple has a wealth of industry experience, with Jessica having an arts background and Mark’s technical experience extending from being technical co-ordinator at the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Lorne film festival to being a video artist.

etermination and a devotion to alternative film drive this enterprising couple. Their Pivotonian began as a pop-up venue at the Ukrainian hall in Pakington Street from November 2014 to June 2015.

Mark and Jessica were so inspired by the support of locals they decided to establish a permanent home for their independent cinema.

“We decided to call it the Pivotonian Cinema as Geelong was nicknamed the Pivot in days gone by and the locals were known as Pivotonians,” explains Jessica.

“We both have family links to the region and Mark recalled going to the Pix theatre when he was young.

We wondered if it was still there and if we could take it over. Sadly that wasn’t an option. While the building did come on to the market and the owner was really supportive for us to use it, Village Cinemas had a covenant on the premises so it could not be used by anyone else as a theatre.”

So began a David and Goliath battle for their first permanent premises, backed by powerful support from the Geelong community. “Village would not agree to lift the covenant and the cost of legal fees to attempt to have it overturned proved prohibitive and too risky, so the search began to find suitable new premises,” Jessica says.

Buoyed by public support, they launched a crowd-funding campaign that they decided would be the true test to gauge if Geelong really wanted them to open a permanent site. “We were somewhat surprised but excited and pleased that we reached our $30,000 target. It was mind-blowing,” says Jessica.

“The people of Geelong supported us not only verbally but also put their money where their mouth is. It’s been a long journey as we looked at various places for five to six months before we could secure this site, and the landlord has been so supportive.

“It’s amazing – we wouldn’t be here without him. The construction has been a speed-of-light process and we went into hyper mode at the end!”

The cinema is on the first floor with its entrance in Verner Seet next door to Chas Cole Cellars.

orange beanbags are a homely touch on the floor at the front. You can take your cappuccino or craft beer in with you to watch your favourite movie. The cinema is compact, creating a cosy, intimate feel. The big bonus is there’s plenty of leg room so you won’t kick the chair in front of you.

Now with a permanent home, Mark has installed better sound, image quality and acoustics. “We’ve got a JBL sound system, the best in the business,” says Mark.

“The projection room has a Christie cinema projection playback system and soon we’ll install a 16-millimetre projector to show movies from the ’60s.”

While being hugely grateful for the local support, Mark and Jessica have in turn supported local tradies in their new build. “The candy bar is my pride and joy, designed and built by Julian Beattie of Makestuff in Torquay,” explains Jessica.

and bubs, are keen to do more short film events, we already have a number of fund-raisers booked in and we will also do more festivals.

“Later in the year, we will do the Ukrainian festival again as we really enjoy doing foreign content and it will be an ongoing annual event; we also have an African festival screening later in the year that’s taking over the cinema for two days.”

Kicking off the current season is a diverse mix including Sherpa, a documentary covering a tragedy at Mount Everest, when a massive block of ice crashed on to a climbing route, killing 16 Sherpas.

Mark says: “Our grand opening on May 28 is an industry night officially opened by Michelle Carey, artist director of MIFF. “For the start of the season we have Pawno, a romance-drama set in a dusty old pawnbroker’s in the heart of Footscray where world-weary owner Les watches as the lives of the people who come through his doors collide, change and unravel. We will be having a Q&A session at the 7.30pm screening and the cast and crew are coming down, including director Paul Ireland, actor and writer Damian Hill and also hopefully actor Kerry Armstrong.” ● gthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au » pivotcinema.com.au

a new home for local artists Jessica and Mark are supportive of local and short films. Last year, they showed Water, Water by Surf Coast author and playwright Janet Brown for its Victorian premiere. The short film was also selected for the Puertas Film Fest in Spain and the Barossa Film Festival in South Australia and recently was invited to be a part of the Wasaga Film Festival in Ontario, Canada, where it won the Silver International Film Award.

Starring Geelong’s Claudia Clark, Water Water was directed by Iris Walshe-Howling and filmed outdoors on the coast between Anglesea and Aireys Inlet by Adam Tribe. It tells the story of a widow who has experienced devastating floods in her country town and lost everything. Now it’s time to decide what she will do – stay and rebuild or leave and begin a life of the unknown.

A delighted Janet Brown was thrilled with the win and is excited about Jessica and Mark’s latest venture. “We wish the Pivotonian every success. Film-lovers in the region will love to support this cinema on its reopening at its new premises,” Janet says.

Claudia Clark concurred. “The Pivotonian is a great little venue for films such as ours and many others that were art-house or foreign films. They were so obliging and supportive of local artists. I like to see small innovative businesses such as this come to Geelong.

“After all, the more competition the better. It means a wider selection of films for local audiences and this can only be a plus.” ●

athy Slarks is a master of many crafts, from knitting to crochet, but it’s only recently she’s added coffee making to her string of talents.

The former fashion designer has always been a dedicated tea drinker, sipping her favourite brew while working on a project.

But she’s broadened her horizons since opening her own cafe and craft studio, Craft Space, with long-time friend Loretta Davis.

“In my household all my family are coffee drinkers and I am this tea drinker,” Cathy says.

“I shocked my dad when I didn’t drink coffee, it was like, ‘Whose daughter is this?’.

I think he is pretty excited that I am learning about things like double ristrettos and I know what a magic is now.”

Craft Space, a welcoming cafe in the heart of Geelong, was born out of a desire to create a beautiful space where people could come to do some craft, grab a hot drink and a biscuit and “not have people look at them weirdly”.

Both Cathy and Loretta studied fashion design at RMIT – they met during the course – and their visual flair is evident in the cafe fit-out.

The cafe was the first in Geelong to serve Industry Beans, which was also the first coffee Cathy ever tasted 12 months ago. “We wanted something no one else in Geelong had,” she says.

Lola’s Kitchen at Boom Gallery has also started serving Industry Beans but Craft Space is the sole purveyor of its Rose Street espresso blend.

The blend is named after the location of the roaster’s Fitzroy base and Industry says it has been a hit with “third-wave coffee snobs”.

It is comprised of three single-origin beans, with those from Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Brazil making up the backbone. Beans from Kalledevarapura Estate in India (30 per cent) and Maua in Kenya (10 per cent) round out the flavour. Key characteristics are citrus, red cherry and cocoa.

Of course, Cathy also takes pride in Craft Space’s tea selection from Pint of Tea. She enjoys the greater interaction with people from working in hospitality.

“Fashion was my thing but then I discovered my dream of moving to Paris and being a couturier with John Galliano was not going to happen,” she says.

After studying art therapy she started teaching people to crochet – something she continues with regular craft classes at Craft Space.

She and Loretta have also designed postcards, similar to the popular adult colouring books, which customers can colour in while they drink their coffee.

Cathy loves the cafe’s patch on Little Malop Street and is excited to be a part of the city’s revival. “I know council is always talking about ‘what is the heart of Geelong?’ and I feel like it is here,” she says. ● NICOLE MAYNE

f you are an apartment or unit owner, it is likely you are part of an owners corporation. As a member, there are certain procedures that must be followed and you might not even be aware of them. It is important that owners corporation members and committee members understand these procedures, as well as their rights and responsibilities.

What is an owners corporation?

An owners corporation comes into effect when a plan of subdivision containing common property is registered with Land Victoria. It has an obligation to manage, administer, repair and maintain the common property of a development. While the owners corporation oversees common property, its powers extend to enforcing the owners corporation rules applicable to private property. Owners corporations raise annual levies to comply with their functions to look after common property. Each property owner must pay levies, which are apportioned in accordance with lot liability as outlined in the plan of subdivision.

How do you distinguish private property from common property?

Property owners often make the mistake of presuming this is self-explanatory, with common property being

DARK MUSINGS Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says these key colours for winter create a unique look and feel when the darker hues are paired with striking elements, adding interest and light.

Geelong beer lovers enjoyed an afternoon of regional brew-tasting as the Geelong Hotel was taken over by Good Beer Week festivities.

The hotel’s beer taps were handed over to regional brewers such as Southern Bay, Little Creatures/White Rabbit, Prickly Moses, Cockies, Blackman’s Brewery, Forrest Brewing, Rogue Wave (Aireys Pub) and Bellarine Brewing Co. Good Beer Week involves 270 diverse and innovative events across Geelong and Victoria.

It attracts about 50,000 attendees from across Australia and overseas. This year, it celebrates its sixth incarnation with a line-up that included guests from five continents, leading chefs, masterclasses, degustations, opera, live music and a fashion show.

MOUNTAIN TO MOUTH 2016 Art, music and storytelling by more than 70 artists were all a part of Geelong’s multi-award winning extreme arts walk, Mountain to Mouth.

The biennial walk, which was spread over two days on May 6 and 7, involved 11 stages with supporters walking from the You Yangs peaks through central Geelong, along the Barwon River, via the Bellarine Peninsula and out to the mouth of the Barwon River at Barwon Heads.

Along the way, more than 500 walkers experienced edgy artworks commissioned especially for Mountain to Mouth. About 50 people walked the full 80 kilometres, while over 6000 attended the ceremonies that took place.

Visitors also had the chance to get involved in Geelong After Dark on Friday evening – a pop-up night of art installations and performances filling the lanes, streets and venues of Geelong’s CBD.

since November 2012, with only 1400 remaining. Estuary Leopold – a nine-year project – has sold out in just over six years.

Executive director Rory Costelloe says about 60 per cent of the Armstrong buyers are second- and third-home buyers, with 90 per cent owner-occupied. The estate has direct access to the Ring Road and a $7.5 million facility, Club Armstrong, is set to open.

“Geelong is becoming a corridor of choice. Sixty per cent of our buyers are still Geelong-based, coming from Newtown, Highton, Belmont, Grovedale and Waurn Ponds. The rest are coming from Torquay and western Melbourne suburbs,” Rory says.

“Geelong has an amazing choice of education, medical centre and jobs. There are three major hospitals and it’s close to the bay and ocean. It’s only going to get stronger.

“Ten years ago Geelong was only building 500 new homes a year, now we are building close to 1500 new homes. In the next five years this will grow to 2500-3000 homes.”

A fast-tracked release of the second stage of the 139-lot boutique development has just been announced following the sales success of its first 34 land parcels.

The Heights, on the banks of the Moorabool River in Herne Hill, is on undulating land that promises to deliver panoramic views over the open green plains below and proximity to the neighbourhood’s established facilities.

Joint developers Asset 1 and Riverlee have created larger-than-average lots to give buyers a wealth of choice. Blocks range from 448 square metres to 1693 square metres.

Asset 1 sales director Mark Adams puts the project’s recent sales success down to The Heights’ larger lots, beautiful outlook and the amenities incorporated into the master plan.

When completed, the estate will cover 51 hectares, with 5.2 hectares of planned open space. This includes a proposed junior football oval, playgrounds and parkland.

ayaking along the Barwon River is not an activity the members of the Meaney family ever imagined themselves doing.

But since moving to Highton Ridge estate, Susan, Greg and their four children have rediscovered the joy of spending time in the great outdoors.

“Because the water is right there you can go down and it is safe,” Susan says. “There are jetties and you can picnic down there.

“It’s one of those things you don’t realise are in the area until you are here. It’s great – you are not stuck in suburbia.”

The couple built a four-bedroom house at Highton Ridge and moved in with their three children – Henry, 10, Sam, 9, and Olivia, 5 – three years ago. They have since had another son, Tom, who is now aged 1.

Susan says they were attracted to the larger blocks at the estate and the views it offered over the surrounding valley.

“We were looking to build a four-bedroom

From its elevated position, the house captures views across the Barwon River towards the You Yangs and back in the direction of Ballarat.

a hidden gem … not many people have discovered it yet,” she says.

The nearby Barrabool Hills Plaza also offers a medical centre, chemist, several takeaway outlets and a gym.

“You are only five minutes from the Highton shops and I still like to go down to the butcher but the supermarket is so convenient and easy to access,” Susan says.

Originally a Geelong resident, Susan later moved to Melbourne but she and Greg moved back to be closer to family once they had kids.

Greg, a tradesman, still often travels back to the capital for work and can make the trip in 55 minutes, thanks to the nearby Geelong Ring Road.

“From here there are no traffic lights until you hit Melbourne,” Susan says.

After first relocating back to Geelong, the couple originally bought and renovated in Belmont before building a new house close to Deakin University.

Large numbers of students living in the area meant a lot of cars and traffic, which wasn’t great for the young family.

cean Grove’s family-friendly beach and coastal lifestyle are undoubtedly the town’s number one attractions.

But for residents of the biggest population centre on the Bellarine Peninsula, the strong sense of community runs a close second.

It’s not uncommon to hear people talking about never wanting to leave the postcode and by that they don’t simply mean moving away, but also their desire to shop and dine locally.

The community feeling is a big drawcard for people from country centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo, who top the list of sea-changers moving to the town.

At last count, its population was estimated to be almost 14,000 but this is tipped to rise to more than 16,000 by 2030. It’s a designated growth area, with new development concentrated in the town’s north-east corner.

New housing estates are expanding in the area bordered by Grubb and Banks roads and the Bellarine Highway.

Elsewhere, older houses and holiday shacks are often being replaced with modern townhouses or more luxurious permanent residences.

“I think people like it because obviously it’s a coastal town and the community vibe is very strong,” says Bellarine Property agent Ben Roberts. “Considering it is a growing town, it’s different to places like Torquay.”

oung families priced out of the Melbourne property market are turning to the Geelong region for a fresh, more affordable start.

The enviable lifestyle, coastal townships and ability to commute to work in the capital make for an attractive package.

Ray White Geelong director Jim Cross reports a big jump in interest from Melbourne buyers in the past six months as prices there continue to rise.

He says the demand is coming from young families looking for more space to raise their children and older downsizers who can get more bang for their buck in Geelong.

“There are all the obvious attractions, such as the coastal lifestyle,” Jim says.

“The other factor that we are seeing down in the Melbourne market is that there are young couples in Richmond that are having their first or second child and they want a bigger property but they want to live in a trendy area.

“They can’t afford to take that step from a one or two-bedroom unit to a family home that’s still in a good location.”

So instead of moving to the outskirts of Melbourne and facing a 90-minute commute into the city, they look to Geelong and surrounding coastal areas.

“Previously we were getting one in 10 coming through opens from Melbourne,” Jim says. “Now we’re getting three or four out of 10 over the space of the past six months.”

More affordable property is also attracting Melbourne empty nesters who are cashing in their family homes and buying smaller properties in the Geelong region. The money they pocket can help fund their retirement.

New developments such as Balmoral Quay – a townhouse and marina complex on Geelong’s waterfront – have proved popular with the downsizer market.

Jim says the project offers waterfront living at a reasonable price – something that would be hard to find in Melbourne suburbs such as Port Melbourne or Brighton.

Whitford Property also sees a lot of movement between Geelong and the coast.

Director Dale Whitford says most people making the sea change are attracted to the towns of Point Lonsdale, Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove and Torquay.

Whitford Torquay director Michael Ferris says the average buyer in the town is aged 39.

“There are definitely people cashing out of Melbourne and getting big money for their property and taking advantage of the more laid-back lifestyle,” he says.

“I guess with Torquay and the Great Ocean Road it’s not pretentious. It has still got that beach culture and it’s a great place to live.”

The smaller coastal towns also appeal to people relocating from country centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo.

Michael says larger “lifestyle” allotments are becoming more popular as people look for more space to raise their families.

“It’s a place where you can build a single-storey home that is going to last as well as having your shed,” he says.

hen the Cats are flying, spirits in Geelong are lifted. Accordingly, Michael Brennan (McDonald & Co) latched on to the moment outside 2b Lonsdale Street, South Geelong, on Saturday, just 100 metres from Simonds Stadium, the home of the Cats.

“This property probably went up in value last night,” Michael told the 25 onlookers, referring to the Cats’ victory over the Crows in Adelaide. “In fact, it probably would have gone up even more if they had kicked straight.”

Michael posted a vendor bid of $380,000 for the three-bedroom weatherboard house, and then another of $395,000.

A young man seized his chance and offered $400,000, enough for the hammer to drop in his favour. The man, a local, bought the property as a family investment.

There was no need for a vendor bid at 18 Belcher Street, Hamlyn Heights, where Lloyd Moulton (Barry Plant Geelong) faced a crowd of 35 outside the three-bedroom weatherboard on a block of 760 square metres.

“With a little bit of work, this property has the potential to be a great investment,” Lloyd said. “This is a chance to get a foothold in one of Geelong’s best suburbs.”

A man was quick to offer $290,000 and three other parties joined in.

The contest ebbed and flowed before Lloyd finally brought the hammer down at $382,000. The buyer was a local investor.

Another investor, this one from Melbourne, took the prize at 373 Myers Street, East Geelong, a three-bedroom character weatherboard house.

Marcus Falconer (Hodges) guided a three-way contest in front of a crowd of 60 after bidding kicked off at $500,000.

The offers reached $619,000 before the hammer came down.

Listing agent Jeff Begg said Melbourne buyers were still showing keen interest in the Geelong market.

A local family came up trumps at 2 Oliver Street, Manifold Heights, where Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) pointed out the attraction of the suburb.

“There are only 770 homes here so getting

the edge of Moorpanyal Park, opposite 27 The Esplanade. This allowed the crowd of 40 to take in the bay view offered by the two-bedroom brick house on a block of 780 square metres.

“Properties like this are very much a rare find,” Peter said, before posting a vendor bid of $600,000 and inviting the onlookers to mull it over.

“Have a good think about it, have a good look at that view,” he said.

He posted another vendor bid of

$650,000, at which mark the property was passed in. It sold shortly after to a Geelong buyer.

As usual, Geelong West was a part of the action, with Will Ainsworth (Ray White Geelong) selling 55 Maitland Street, a four-bedroom updated miner’s cottage.

A vendor bid of $420,000 tempted two parties into the contest but the property was passed in at $475,000. Local investors soon had the prize at $490,000. ●
