If you pass this point, which doesn’t always happen and for good reason – like sometimes you’ve just got to go home and be a grown-up – what can well follow is the “I love you” period. It is when everyone has an urge to tell everyone else how much they appreciate them.

If you have the staying power – and at some stage in the night admitted to yourself that hell, you can deal with the after-effects

tomorrow, you’re going to leave the car and order an Espresso Martini – this is one of the more excellent periods in the life of an evening because, no matter how strong or aloof or sober someone might appear to be, everyone loves to be told they are loved, even if the person sharing it just fell over.

This is also usually the time people start admitting things – past love affairs, that period when they thought you were a bitch, the use of substances other than moisturiser to maintain their youthful glow. There can also be meltdowns, when those who may well have maintained good hair all evening will lay their head on the table and tell you things they’ve never admitted to anyone – their marriage is on the rocks, their boobs aren’t real, or they ran over the cat.

For this reason, and also because around now it’s game on for red-wine lips and loud singing, staying the distance can have its advantages.

I have been a window cleaner since …

I decided to do this for a living because … when I got married, I was working night shift as a security guard in Melbourne. My wife was working day shift. I wanted my own business where I could work days. I bought a book about starting your own business and it had 1000 business ideas in it. Window cleaning was one of the first businesses listed. They talked about all the advantages so I thought I’d give it a go.

I started my own company, J.H.Window Cleaning, in Geelong because … I was already established in the Essendon area in Melbourne.

We would come down to Geelong now and again and really loved it here, so we moved down in December 2010. The good thing about window cleaning is that your office is your car. You can move anywhere and advertise in the local paper.

My main clients are … everyday people. Ninety per cent of my work is domestic houses. I also clean shop windows and big businesses.

The most challenging part of my job … would have to be walking on steep roofs or working off a high ladder. Windy or wet days make it more of a challenge.

My job takes me … anywhere from Geelong, to the Bellarine Peninsula, Torquay, Anglesea, Essendon, even Mount Macedon and Sunbury.

A typical working day for me involves … cleaning windows, cleaning roof gutters and even

I love my job because … I am always meeting new people and working in different places. I can also work my own hours and don’t have to answer to a boss.

The funniest/most interesting thing I have seen while window cleaning is … once I was in someone’s backyard and they forgot to tell me they had a dog. I’m not usually scared of dogs, but this boxer came at me from nowhere, barking

loudly. I took off running around the house to get to the gate on the other side. The people at the house were in stitches laughing. The sight of me running from their harmless dog cracked them up. Embarrassing but funny.

The highlight of my career so far is … going full time. The first two years I worked part time, doing security work and then call-centre work.

People might not know this about window cleaning but … it’s a specialised trade and it takes some training and skill to do the job properly.

If I wasn’t a window cleaner … I don’t know what I would be doing. I always wanted to be a cartoonist as a kid. I would probably be working in customer service or courier work. My wife wants me to be a politician but I’m too honest!

My favourite thing to do in Geelong is … to go to the Eastern Beach with my wife and kids.

bu Dhabi, Stockholm, Cape Town, Chicago, Yokohama and a string of other cities around the world are set to become home away from home for a lean, rangey Geelong bloke with fire in his feet and stars in his eyes.

While triathlete Jack van Stekelenburg’s passport is set for a solid workout, he’ll be asking the same of himself, nothing less, when he throws himself into the bearpit of the ITU triathlon world championships.

But he’s putting in the legwork, and the perspiration, with a gruelling training schedule that has him swimming, riding and running a minimum 5½ hours a day in the Queensland heat. With a little luck, and a little genetic serendipity, he’ll be a serious contender.

At just 18, Jack already knows a little about throwing himself into the international fray. He sprang into the public eye last year when he was rushed into the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, after Australia’s original male selection, Matt Hauser, came off his bike in training and broke his collar bone.

Jack had finished second at the trials in Penrith earlier in the year and appeared a natural choice but it took more training and more time trials – in the middle of year 12 VCE studies – before he was selected. And this less than a month out from the games.

“I’d sort of just focused on running over the winter; I was in year 12 so my main goal was just to do as well as possible in my studies and when I finished school concentrate on triathlon,” he says. “I had to get a lot of training in as quickly as I could and just did the best that I could.”

That he finished 14th in his international baptism of fire is creditable, to say the least. But then, it’s kind of in his blood.

ack’s father is John Stekelenburg, former world barefoot waterski champ, triathlete and ironman.

He’s also brother to sisters Laura and Amy, both former state- and national-level runners, swimmers and surf lifesavers.

With VCE out of the way, Jack headed to Queensland to take up studies at Bond University while training under coach Dan Atkins, the head of Triathlon Australia’s Gold Coast National Performance Centre.

“He’s a hard taskmaster but it’s good; he gets along with the whole squad,” says Jack.

“He just wants us to have faith in him and faith in the program, and focuses a lot on taking your time and the results will come. We just have to believe in him and just pump it out for the time being.”

The greatest pressure on Jack is not his coach, the workload or anyone else, though – it’s himself.

“The people around me want me to succeed but they don’t pressure me. It’s just the expectations I have of myself – trying to perform to what I think is a good standard, a good level.

“But I’ll take the results that come. There’s nothing you can do on the day if something happens, if something goes wrong.”

Jack’s gearing up to launch into next year’s ITU triathlon world titles, starting in Mexico next September. And, as we said earlier, his training schedule’s fairly solid to say the least.

“It’s kind of changing every day, though,” he says.

“On Monday morning, I’ll be up at 4.30am for a

“To me, the whole thing of going to a boys’ school that was competitive and a change to my training environment was really exciting. I was going to live in-house with 100 boys when I’d never had a brother.”

Jack’s sisters’ performances drove him as a junior athlete but it wasn’t without frustration.

“Laura and Amy were always making state teams for cross country and surf lifesaving when I was younger and I sort of used to be jealous that I couldn’t make any of the teams,” he says.

“But then, come year 6, I made my first cross country state team and from then on I was making cross

two-hour swim session and then 90-minute ride in the hills. In the afternoon, I’ll have a two-hour run session.

I’m training two or three times every day.

“I do a bit of surfing up on the Gold Coast just in free time, whether it’s body surfing or board. After training, I’ll go down to the beach for an hour or so at night.

“The study is a bit easier than it was at school in terms of the workload, so it fits in pretty well and they’re flexible at uni for me. I’m used to discipline, though, to getting things done, and I don’t have any injuries or anything so it’s all just hard training at the moment.”

Jack’s schooling has been as disciplined as his sports training. Born and bred in Geelong, he was a fixture at Geelong College from kindergarten to the end of year 8, when he headed to South Yarra’s Melbourne Grammar as a boarder.

“It was a good opportunity, a bit of a change. I’d been at Geelong College for so long. My sister went to

country, surf lifesaving and triathlon, pretty much every year through to year 12.”

His father’s record might have loomed large over Jack’s aspirations, but it’s not been an issue.

“Dad’s had a lot of experience over the years competing in triathlon as well as waterskiing. He’s done a lot of international competitions and he’s helped me a lot and got me in the right mind space,” he says.

“That mind space is a massive part of it. You’ve just got to believe in what you’re doing, that it’s the best thing for you and not get carried away by other people or whether you’re fit at one point or not.

“You’ve just got to look for the long-term goal, I guess. Building up over a really long period, believing in your coach and your support staff.”

His mum, Mary, has been front and centre the entire journey, too. Behind every successful man, they say …

an athlete and even more so as a young adult,” he says.

“She has always kept me in line and been key in getting me to and from training and competition for years, as well as looking after me in every other aspect of life.”

As for the worlds, well, as Jack suggests, it’s just a matter of sticking to your goals.

“They’re pretty much based on the European season, so we have the Australian summer, our triathlon season, and that finishes around April. Then most people, depending on their uni commitments or work, will go over to Europe and spend the next four or five months there training up for worlds.

“The worlds start September. My first will be Mexico, hopefully. It’s still quite a long way away.”

One thing about young Jack van Stekelenburg, though, he’s always made the clock look slow – next September is likely to be banging on his door sooner than he thinks. TWR suspects he’ll be ready nonetheless. ● nmurphy@theweeklyreview.com.au

THE FIND

There’s a couple of ways lower-alcohol wines are made and both can compromise the product.

Grapes can be picked early when they contain less sugar (and lower alcohol) but this means they’re also missing flavour.

Alcohol can also be removed using reverse osmosis but this can make the wines feel thin and unbalanced.

There is one low-alcohol Australian classic that has been picked early for the past 50 years and has alcohol levels at 10-11 per cent. It’s Hunter Valley semillon.

Semillon is grown around the world – it’s the white grape of Bordeaux and Sauternes – and widely grown in Australia.

For some reason it’s the soils and climate of the Hunter Valley that does it best.

The just-released Thomas Wines 2009 cellar reserve Braemore semillon ($50) is just starting to show secondary characters as a six-year-old. It’s delightfully smooth and there’s a light toastiness to its zesty citrus flavours.

Reds Rowsley Fault Pinot Noir 2014 (Moorabool Valley) $30; 12.8% From a dry-grown vineyard, it has perfumed and earthy dark cherry, strawberry and raspberry flavours. With a silky smooth texture, it’s elegant and concentrated, juicy and bright.

There’s a touch of vanilla to the slightly tart, delicious finish. ●

Clyde Park Pinot Noir Block F 2014 (Moorabool Valley) $65; 13.5% This is Clyde Park’s original vineyard – planted in 1989 with the famous MV6 clone of pinot noir. Less than a hectare in size, it produces elegant pinot noir that smells of perfumed summer berries, earth and spice. It’s bright and focussed in the mouth, delicious, edgy and complex. I reckon it has years up its sleeve, too. ●

Something magic happens when cabernet and shiraz are blended together. Dusty, leafy cabernet characters of blackcurrant and bramble fruits are supported by a layer of blackberry and cherry from the shiraz. Similar flavours are neatly balanced, with a mouthful of chewy tannins that are crying out for roast meat. ●

Del Rios Pinot Noir 2013 (Anakie) $35; 14.2% I like what the team at Del Rios is doing. Earthy strawberry and plum aromas are perfumed and alluring. Silky smooth, this has vibrancy and energy to the cherry, plum and raspberry flavours. There’s a moreishness to this that, combined with blood-orange flavoured acid and a driving finish, make a compelling argument. ●

Block B3 was planted 20 years ago on a slope overlooking the Moorabool River. It’s been subject to drought and severe frosts over the years and in 2014 produced just 50 dozen bottles. Try to track some down: for the stonefruit, citrus, spice and cucumber aromas, and the balance between zippy acid, creamy texture and intense peach, pink grapefruit and almond meal flavours. ●

Barrel fermentation, wild yeast and French oak for maturation: they’re three keys to classic chardonnay. White peach, spice, and lemon zest aromas hit the spot, while concentrated citrus – lemon, grapefruit and mandarin are all present – green melon and stonefruit flavours are delivered in a silky, structured package. ●

The 2015 Geelong Wine Show has been run and won.

Earning eight medals this year, Jack Rabbit Vineyard made it a hat-trick of most successful exhibitor honours.

At the awards dinner, held at the RACV Torquay Resort, Leura Park was presented with seven medals, including the coveted trophies for the show’s best wine and best shiraz with its 2014 Estate shiraz.

Dinny Goonan Wines, Oakdene Vineyards, Terindah Estate and Scotchmans Hill each won five medals.

Corrina Wright, winemaker and director of Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards in McLaren Vale, again headed the judging panel, which also included wine writer Ralph Kyte-Powell and sommelier Tom Hogan.

“It’s been a busy year,” Corrina says.

“It was good in South Australia, although it was a drought year. My vermentino and fiano whites are good.

“I’ve also been to London to see what was happening on the UK “I’d be wine scene and I’ve just finished judging drinking it, the [Australian] that’s for Women in Wine sure” awards, which was very exciting.”

Corrina says this year’s entries in Geelong’s chardonnay section weren’t as strong as last year.

“But the trophy-winning 2014 Ponda Estate oak-matured chardonnay showed good rich flavours and complexity,” she says.

“There was also a solid class of pinot gris, a variety that can be a little more neutral. The shiraz and pinot classes were really strong this year, which was exciting, particularly 2014 pinots, a really exciting class to judge.”

Another wine to impress was the 2009 Yes Said the Seal reserve blanc de blanc sparkling.

“It is delicious and pretty well-priced,” Corinna says. “If I was sitting here on the beach I’d be drinking it, that’s for sure.

“The 2015 Leura Park Riesling, which won gold in its class, was slightly off dry.

Most rieslings are super-lean with a green edge but this one has that little bit extra to balance it out.”

Among other trophy winners were the 2014 Mermerus Pinot Noir (best pinot noir) and the 2014 Jack Rabbit Vineyard Cabernet Shiraz (best other red or blend).

Carlos says it is also the only Australian roaster to win dual trophies at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, for its plunger coffee and single-origin. The latter was made from an Ethiopian bean, the roaster’s favourite.

The company delivers its signature blends and a different single-origin coffee every week to cafes in Melbourne and Geelong.

“A lot of other roasters are roasting on small roasters that are designed to roast in a shop,” Carlos says. “Our consistency is superb, our quality is officially recognised as superb.”

Weekly cupping sessions are an integral part of the process to sample brewed coffees and pick up flavours that can be enhanced with roasting. During our visit we sample a

range of beans, each with its own personality.

Even after so many years working alongside each other in the industry, the Kindreds display a passion for coffee and each other as they chat about which is the pick of the day.

On the factory floor, bags of specialist-grade green beans sourced from Papua New Guinea, Africa, India, Brazil and Mexico sit alongside drums and amps they use when pursuing their other passion – playing in a cover band.

Carlos is the drummer and Nikki, by all accounts, does a mean job on the bass.

They have also turned coffee into a family affair, with two of their children going on to forge careers in the industry – one of them as a champion barista in his own right.

C

arlos and Nikki Kindred have come a long way since they started roasting coffee in a log shed 15 years ago.

Back then the cafe owners had moved from Geelong to Tasmania to pursue their dream of creating quality specialty coffee.

There were no books or courses on how to do it, with much of the know-how at the time held by Italian families who passed the knowledge from generation to generation. The Kindreds taught themselves everything they know and, along the way, built up a reputation as one of the country’s best roasters.

“We went to Tasmania and set up the specialty coffee industry in Tasmania – we changed the face of coffee there,” Carlos says.

“Nikki was actually one of the judges for the Australian champion barista; that shows how highly regarded she is.”

About three-and-a-half years ago the Kindreds returned to their home town Geelong and set up specialty roasting business Roastcraft. The move was driven partly by a desire to come home and be close to Melbourne’s booming coffee culture.

In a quiet shed in North Geelong, they have invested heavily in a state-of-the-art industrial roaster from Italian company Brambati. It’s clear the large piece of machinery is their pride and joy – in just over 14 minutes it can transform green coffee beans from all over the world into award-winning roasts, all under the watchful eye of Carlos.

He admits to still getting butterflies on the night before a roast and checks the machine in six-second blocks. He’s looking for a balance of flavour and notes that appeals to customers. “You are just hoping that it is better than the week before,” he says.

Not by design: Briony Herbison’s millinery and dressmaking talents are gaining attention.

W

hen considering prospective names for her label, fashion designer Briony Herbison says she couldn’t get the words Anakie Couture out of her head. The words stuck – and she used them for her label.

“A lot of people think that it comes from the place, Anakie,” she says. “It doesn’t. It doesn’t really have any association; I just really liked the name.

“It’s kind of pretty and it’s kind of quirky at the same time,” she says, adding that “there’s a hint of Geelong in it.”

That “hint of Geelong” is being felt far and wide, with the Belmont designer working with clients from all over the country. Some serious spotlight also came about last year when she designed a Brownlow Medal dress for Dr Pippa Grange, an ethicist, psychologist and general manager of people and culture at Cotton On. The dress was made in collaboration with Cotton On. In a world of ready-to-wear fashion, Briony says there’s strong appeal for bespoke creations, and especially so with bridal wear.

However, these pieces are already gaining attention with Anakie Couture millinery featuring in a photo-shoot collaboration with Melbourne-based Zachary The Label boutique this month.

Goals for the future encompass continued business development, and there just might be a ready-to-wear collection on the cards.

any of our memories are made while journeying across the ocean or even caravanning around Australia. And now keen travellers can keep their memories alive by mapping out the journey travelled.

Geelong’s Maree O’Donnell and her daughter Lisa Chaffey have created a business called The Big Trip, which allows travellers to track their journey on a fabric map with embroidery, rhinestones and coloured pens.

Their products include a world map travel embroidery kit, an Australian map embroidery kit and hoop art map kits of Australia and the USA. “It’s made simple and anyone can do it. It’s just a running stitch, so it’s not difficult at all. But if people don’t want to sew, they can use the coloured pens in the kit as an alternative or use them to colour in the map,” Maree says. “The map helps to keep the holiday memory alive and keep a focus on where else you want to go or to give you a goal.”

The kits include a cream fabric map, simple needlecraft instructions, coloured threads, an embroidery needle, coloured pens, an erasable pen and self-adhesive rhinestones to mark the cities.

The different coloured threads can be used to highlight cruises, flights or time spent on the road.

“One lady even used three different colours for her three sons to track where they had all been,” Maree says.

Once the maps have been finished, they can be used as wall hangings (framed or stretched onto a canvas board), a large cushion or used as a feature cushion on the caravan bed. Maree says they are real conversation-starters.

The idea for The Big Trip was initiated after Maree and Lisa travelled extensively and sought a creative way to track their travels.

June, Maree and Lisa decided to create and sell the kits because of high demand. Maree says she’s been working on the business every day since.

“It’s just snowballed from word of mouth and it’s taking off. We have people from all over the world purchasing the maps,” Maree says. “It’s unique because it’s their own travels hanging on the wall and people love to look and see how far they’ve travelled. Or if they are travelling Australia in a caravan, they have a lot of time on the road so can work on it as they travel.”

The Australian embroidery map is designed and printed in Geelong, while Maree prints the hoop art kits from home. Maree says they would make a great gift for Christmas or for someone who is about to travel.

Deakin University medical and nursing students hosted a teddy bears’ hospital at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre last weekend to raise money for a local cause.

For a gold-coin donation, budding doctors and nurses checked on the health of cherished teddy bears for about 300 children who attended the special session at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.

They helped the children to “listen” to bears’ hearts and make paper hats so the teddies could be sun smart. Some of the youngsters also dressed up in surgical gowns.

Money raised went to Our Women Our Children, a group of local volunteers that supports women’s and children’s services at University Hospital Geelong.

The teddy bears’ hospital program runs year round at primary schools in the Geelong region, providing fun and educational activities. ●

More than 90 people attended the official opening of the $1.6 million house. Funded by Karingal, the three-unit house will support residents to live more independently.

Karingal chief executive Mike McKinstry says the organisation is committed to helping people with a disability and their families to find suitable accommodation.

“This house is a wonderful example of Karingal’s vision to support people to live the life they choose,” he says.

Marshall has a four-bedroom unit, two-bedroom unit and single-bedroom unit under one roof.

Karingal has a plan to build 60 accommodation places in 15 years. “So far 45 places have been achieved or are under construction,” Mike says. ●

crowd of more than 150 milled around at 3 Remony Avenue, Highton, on Saturday to see Matthew Constantine (Ray White Highton) put the four-bedroom brick house, with a solar-heated pool, up for auction.

An opening bid of $500,000 sparked a four-way contest that came down to a battle between an older man and a younger woman.

Matthew declared the property on the market at $610,000, with the main two combatants settling in for the long haul.

A few bids later, after the woman offered $625,000, it seemed the contest might be over. Matthew directed his attention to the man, who indicated he was done.

“He’s sure,’’ the woman shot back, much to the amusement of the crowd.

It turned out the man wasn’t sure and the bidding went on. At $654,000 it was over, with the woman taking the prize. The new owners, locals, had missed out at several auctions before landing their new home.

The weather was perfect for Marcus Falconer (Hodges) at 2/20 Eastern Beach Road, Geelong, where 55 people gathered in the front yard of the two-storey bayside house.

The prospect of securing the magnificent views proved strong. The house sold soon after for $1.86 million to a local couple.

Thirty onlookers gathered outside 20 Apex Avenue, Belmont, where David Gray (Buxton Highton) talked up the property. “You’ll always be sitting on 709 square metres of north-facing land in Belmont,’’ he said before taking an opening bid of $340,000 from a man leaning against the front fence.

A young man countered with $350,000 and after a few more bids, he won the day at $372,500. The new owner, a local, has

bought the three-bedroom weatherboard house as an investment.

Peter Maxwell (Maxwell Collins) was in the middle of proceedings at 92 Helms Street, Newcomb, when he swallowed a fly.

He coughed and spluttered a little and then confirmed his suspicions to the crowd of 35. “Oh, that was a nice fly,’’ he said.

He had posted a vendor bid of $300,000 for the three-bedroom rendered house on a big block, with an approved two-lot subdivision.

The fly got in the way, but not before a bid of $310,000. The property was passed in but sold after for a higher, undisclosed price.

The new owner is a property developer. ●
