racist or aggressive acts is a different matter entirely because that behaviour is illegal, but I wonder if the smartphone’s recent success at providing evidence in such cases means everyone is a bit more prepared to push the video button whenever they’re out and about.

Which reminds me of something that came up on my feed recently, where two sisters at a US baseball game photographed and posted the private messages a woman seated in front of them was sharing with her alleged lover, unbeknown to her husband who was seated beside her. They thought it was their right to “expose the cheating hoes”.

ast week after an incident on the street that involved me using a shouty voice because my child was behaving badly, I realised I might be suffering from a new kind of fear.

Fear of going viral.

It came on in much the same way that an actual virus does, in a creeping-all-over, hot and sweaty kind of feeling, which took hold the moment it occurred to me that someone could have filmed my less-than-perfect parenting moment and might right now be sharing it online. Soon, I imagined, I’ll be achieving giddy heights of notoriety as the ‘‘crazed woman yelling at her child at the market; you won’t believe what she does next’’.

It’s the second time I’ve suffered from the “fear of going viral” infliction. The first came after I squawked at a young drunk thing who jumped ahead of me late at night in a very long taxi queue. I wasn’t at my loveliest because it was past midnight and I really needed to get home to the babysitter, but the next morning I faced the cold light of day with that same all-pervading feeling of fear

and dread, because that taxi rank was covered with millennials and we all know they are a dab hand with social media and pretty good at calling out grumpy old people.

You could call this thing paranoia or fear of being publicly shamed, and I reckon you’d be somewhere near right on both counts, and with good reason, because there are no laws that stop people from taking a video of you in a public place and posting it online.

So, everyday people doing stuff that isn’t fabulously terrific but part of life – like disciplining a child or calling out a rude waiter or falling over on the street and exposing your knickers – is now up for

meme grabs. There’s nothing to stop anyone from capturing it, posting it, and the world following up with their own take on whether or not they think you’re hot, arrogant, or a really bad parent.

Go to Walmart wearing nothing but a skirt pulled up over your boobs and you’ll soon find out what I’m talking about. Your bad day can quickly become someone else’s hysterical breakfast meme. Clearly the lady who pulled her skirt up high because she’d forgotten to wear a top hadn’t aspired to hit the internet that day, so why did someone think they had the right to do it for her?

We are all everybody’s business now. We are judge and jury to everyone, Big Brother to ourselves and the person next to us on the train or at the sporting stadium. lena Gabrielle is a necessary luxury for Geelong. The highly skilled singer and physical performer, experienced entertainer, comedienne, chanteuse, producer and filmmaker is a force majeure, and a rare gem on the Geelong arts scene.

Elena’s unique and glamorous productions are unlike anything you might have experienced in a local setting. Her last four shows at Gin & Co Supper Club – Sapphire, Pearl, Diamond Jubilee and French Gem, have sold out.

While the Geelong arts scene is not lacking in theatre and music, Elena’s stellar line-up of cabaret, comedy, burlesque, circus and variety acts is for patrons seeking entertainment of the more boutique variety.

“The shows just keep getting more and more popular,” she says. “At first I recognised most of the ticket buyers; now we have an endless stream of newcomers.”

In a perpetual labour of love, Elena single-handedly persuades national award-winning performers to visit on a monthly basis.

So far, local audiences have been treated to Miss Burlesque Australia title-holder Zelia Rose, Dandyman the circus prince, and Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Imaan Hadchiti. She is also encouraging of local performers such as renowned Roller Pole artist Kylie J and comedian Rohan Windle.

“During the last show, I lined up two Boylesque acts,” she says. “I wasn’t sure Geelong was ready for male burlesque performers, but they brought the house down with laughter and even had the crowd singing along.”

Elena, as MC of each show, regularly treats patrons to her repertoire of cheeky cabaret songs and parodies.

The boutique arts scene is certainly a far cry from Elena’s farm-based upbringing in Freshwater Creek,

where she remembers singing My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion to the chickens during feeding time. Winning a local singing competition at the age of six, Elena also started making and directing her own home movies.

Later attending Sacred Heart College, she joined the Geelong Lyric Theatre Society and was encouraged by her drama teacher to write her own material.

Indicative of her natural talent, she was accepted at age 19 into the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where she was trained in singing and acting.

She has performed in several successful solo shows of her own creation, and last year entered the Guinness World Records by running a Burleskathon – 24 hours of non-stop burlesque by Melbourne and Sydney performers.

While there are still people who lump burlesque into the same genre as stripping, Elena says there is simply zero comparison.

Burlesque is a very old performance art. It’s about the theatrics and the audience participation. Today, it is also a very welcome appreciation of all body types, shapes, colours and sizes. There is no standard for beauty in

It stems back to a night in September 1954 when Marius Dewilde claims to have seen “Martian visitors” (words from a New York Times dispatch, not mine), wearing outfits similar to deep-sea divers, who paralysed him with a green light beam.

More sightings of these cigar-shaped UFOs were reported and France went into a paranoid frenzy.

The mayor of the Châteauneuf district, Lucien Jeune introduced a law banning any UFOs from landing. The law states:

At Zigfrids, Alex says his focus is to create something different for Geelong, “without being classified as a special-occasion venue”.

“We are still at that cheaper price point where people can come back again and again,” he says.

Zigfrids has an extensive wine and beer list and offers local wines by the glass.

There is a focus on snacks. which makes it easy for people to come in for a glass of wine or beer and share an antipasto platter.

The menu also gives a nod to Alex’s Canadian heritage with dishes inspired by his homeland, including crispy lamb ribs with maple syrup and black pepper ($16).

“That’s definitely one of those ones that’s strongly Canadian but Australian at the same time. The southern-fried soft-shell crab burger (charcoal buttermilk bun, apple and fennel slaw with jalapeno ranch ($18) also has that north American/Canadian influence,” Alex says.

The most popular dish on the menu is the chocolate and salted caramel tart with honeycomb, almond, pork crackle and salted caramel and ice-cream ($16).

Other popular dishes include the KFC – Korean fried cauliflower ($14) – or gnocchi with sage, pumpkin and pickled walnuts ($26). howcasing the region’s best food and wine is all in a day’s work for Zigfrids’ executive chef Alex McIntosh. The Canadian-born-and-bred chef has been serving up mouth-watering dishes with a predominantly local flavour at the Geelong West restaurant since last January.

“I’ve been really impressed with all the great local products that come out of Geelong,” he says.

“There are so many different places to get all of your products, from your fruit and vegetables to lamb, seafood, duck and beef.

It’s a really good area for fresh produce so I like to showcase that in the restaurant where possible.”

The Vancouver native’s passion for local produce inspired him to establish the restaurant’s monthly Producers’ Dinners, held from April until October. The four-course meals promote the local products used in the restaurant – such as poultry and seafood, teamed with local wines.

“A lot of our most popular dishes have come from the Producers’ Dinners, where I have had to focus and come up with some new and different ideas to use these products, and a lot of them make their way onto the menu because people love them so much.”

Owned by Donna and Richard Flanders, the contemporary restaurant/bar is housed in a former panel beater’s workshop. It retains an industrial feel, but exposed red brick, hanging plants and high ceilings add a modern edge.

The 80-seater venue has a mezzanine area, suited to functions, and a courtyard area.

The kitchen has felt like home to Alex since he started washing dishes in a restaurant, aged 14. “I never actually did an apprenticeship. I’ve always just worked in kitchens. I always did it and never thought of doing anything else.”

The Bellarine Peninsula will star in tonight’s (August 13) episode of SBS food show Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook Melbourne. The British food writer, who has become a hit with international television audiences, travels to the region to sample the produce and visit some of our top food venues.

The episode features Khoo cooking a dish with Elk Horn Roadhouse chef Julie Taylor, trying cider at Flying Brick Cider House, milking goats at Drysdale Cheeses, visiting Jack Rabbit Vineyard and checking out mussel farming with Lance Wiffen from Sea Bounty Mussels. The episode airs on SBS at 8pm tonight.

ith a slogan like “Mule – kick ass coffee”, you’re left in absolutely no doubt about what you’ll find inside this kaleidoscopic warehouse conversion in the industrial strip on Separation Street, North Geelong.

The exotic and stylised Mirage Veloce espresso machine is the chandelier-lit centrepiece to an off-the-wall coffee creation by brothers-in-law David Leary and Simon French.

Coffee-lovers follow a pattern here; there’s just too much to take in when you arrive through the roller-door entrance. They step inside and stop, letting their eyes adjust to what they confront in the big space.

There is some sort of warning, though, in the brightly coloured patchwork street-art façade adorned with three giant painted mule heads. It’s almost like some sort of carnival or Spiegeltent. Geelong has seen nothing like this before.

“But we’re really a coffee venue,” Simon says. “That’s our reason for being here.

“We didn’t want to distract ourselves with food so we thought we’d invite the food trucks to set up here. And, it’s turned out to be a beautiful combination.”

The pair have chosen Proud Mary coffee, roasted in Collingwood. Mule is the only Geelong venue to sell this quality brand.

“The message we wanted was coffee with a kick, which somehow gave us ‘Mule – kick ass coffee’. It’s perfect and goes so well with our Proud Mary.”

He and David are enthused about their new business. “We always used to hang out at warehouse cafés in Melbourne. So when this site came up it was just so obvious for us,” Simon says. The warehouse was formerly home to stock feed and an aviary.

to do the murals. They bought a truckload of pallets to build the counter and other fittings.

Their electrician installed the chandelier, reclaimed from an old mansion in Newtown.

David has hand-built a gas-fired roaster out the back from an old stainless-steel rotisserie.

He plans to roast beans in-house and do public cuppings (tastings).

“Everyone said it wouldn’t work,” he says.

“I’ve roasted batches up to 18 kilograms so far but I’ll stick to two or three kilograms at a time now to perfect the process.”

The men have also started planting a garden so customers can bask in the weak winter sun.

“The idea is that every time you walk through that door you get a new experience,” Simon says. “We’ll have different coffees every week and the food trucks will constantly rotate. It gives you that exceptional taste of the best of Melbourne.”

David can’t shift his eyes from the Mirage.

“Do you know, Kees van der Westen hand-builds just 30 Veloce espresso machines in the Netherlands each year and we’ve got one. I’ve been looking at one of these machines for the past five years. It’s my dream machine. As soon as I saw it, I said ‘of course we’re going to have that’.

“I think people want a taste of what the big metropolis has to offer. This is an industrial area, people can walk in from their factories, warehouses or offices and every day they get a whole range of new choices.”

Then there’s the brows. “It’s always about the brows,” says Alana. “Good, thick, strong brows are still the craze. And, of course, filling them in with the correct product is vital.”

he story of spring fashion this year speaks of a surprisingly harmonious mix featuring both the eclectic and the subdued as vintage references meet the new.

Retro revisiting comes through strongly in jumpsuits, a fierce reclaiming of denim, and plenty of suede. Seventies lovers may feel warm and fuzzy as hallmarks such as fringing, high vintage waists, and weaving turn up again. Yet, if vintage influences and safari styling beckon to a free spirit and a sense of adventure then the sports luxe trend – think elegant joggers, “creeper” soles in sandals and anything with a drawstring – equips us with a sense of mobility.

She recommends investing in a good brow product, such as Fibre Brows by Silk Oil of Morocco. “It’s an amazing product that actually has fibres in the shadow so that the colour sticks to your brow hairs and not your skin.”

As for locks, Alana says many are opting for “big chops” at the moment, with blunt, longer bobs (dubbed “lobs”) a sought-after look.

“This haircut looks awesome with a slight messy curl in it; the trick to this is keeping the ends straight.”

In terms of colour, we’re still embracing the balayage trend.

“Balayage is not a phase,” says Alana. “It’s here to stay and it’s all about looking natural and blended, with natural sun-kissed ends.” ●

DREA MTIME STORIES Dreamtime stories pass on important knowledge, cultural values and belief systems to later generations through song, dance, painting and storytelling.

Aborigines have maintained a link with the Dreaming from ancient times to today, creating a rich cultural heritage.

T

he You Yangs is filled with all that nature has to offer – peaks, sticks, rocks, stones, animals, birdlife and so much more – all of which create inspiration for Aboriginal artist Jade Couzens.

The name ‘You Yang’ comes from the Aboriginal words ‘Wurdi Youang’ or ‘Ude Youang’ meaning big mountain in the middle of a plain. Aboriginal people enlarged natural hollows in the rocks to form wells that held water.

The mother-of-two says she spends a lot of time with family wandering the park in Lara picking up ideas.

“We spend a lot of time at the You Yangs and the boys will go exploring, as they like to say it. We get out and go walking along the bush tracks. They like to pick up little feathers, sticks and rocks. That’s a lot of inspiration for me,” Jade says.

“We also often see the wedge-tailed eagle flying over the You Yangs. We have been lucky enough to see that a few times. My inspiration comes from a lot of things.”

The Lara resident spends her spare time painting between working four days a week. Indigenous paintings feature traditional methods including cross-hatching, lines, dots and symbols – which all tell a story or have a meaning.

Jade says she has learnt the meanings of symbols and cross-hatching from her uncle Gavin Couzens. The rest, she says, is just her interpretation of it.

Her paintings feature interpretations of land, rivers and sea, common diamond shapes painted on shields, meeting places where people come together showing their travel paths and connections, camps coming together for celebration and black and white stars of the heavens where all the ancestors are.

“Every painting I do has a story. Sometimes the story will come after the painting or during the painting. Or if it’s a Dreamtime story I will have to paint it the way the story is,” Jade says.

Now Jade’s unique story telling has been recognised on a state level. She was shortlisted for the 10th annual Victorian Indigenous Art Awards at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. More than 40 works are on display until September 20. A total of 62 artists (including two group entries) and 120 separate artworks were entered.

The awards aim to raise the profile of Victoria’s Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander arts sector and create career development opportunities.

The works include traditional pokerwork, painting, sculpture, photography and digital video works. Artists competed for prizes worth more than $50,000 including the $30,000 Deadly Art Award, won by Swan-Hill born Glenda Nicholls. The People’s Choice Award will be decided on September 7.

“I was so surprised. It’s so good to know you are up there among so many other talented artists. I think there are three artists who have won it previously up there and they are so, so talented. They have a lot of years and experience on me. So, for someone like me who does it for a hobby, I was so surprised I was shortlisted,” Jade says.

“I’m hoping that the awards will launch me onto a platform to become a full-time artist. That’s where my goal is. It’s just a matter of getting my name out there and my work.

“That’s my passion. Doing art full-time would be an absolute dream come true. It’s just one of those things in life that you just feel comfortable doing.

“It’s freedom. I’m very creative all the time and if I’m not I get really bored and frustrated. I just need to be constantly doing something and art does that for me.”

Jade’s entry was titled the Rainbow Serpent. The Rainbow Serpent is an important Dreaming figure in many Aboriginal stories and rock art images.

The 36-year-old says she painted the piece about a month ago to sell. But after completion, she decided to keep it after it became her favorite painting so far.

“I kept it and it had a nice little spot in my hallway.

Then I got a phone call to ask if I would be interested in applying for the awards. But I didn’t really have anything to put up, so I thought I could just put the Rainbow Serpent in and see what happens. And it ended up getting shortlisted,” Jade says.

hree generations of the Connor family will show acting talent is in their blood when they perform together in a classic Jane Austen love story.

Jacqui Connor, 65, will star alongside her daughter Amber Connor, 41, and her granddaughter Isobel Connor-Smithyman, 14, in Pride and Prejudice, directed and adapted for the stage by Christine Davey.

Skin of Our Teeth productions is presenting the play until August 29 at Shenton Performing Arts Centre in East Geelong.

Jacqui is playing Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Amber is cast as Caroline Bingley and Isobel has two roles – Georgiana Darcy and Sarah the housemaid. “I’m very close with Amber and Isobel. It’s thoroughly enjoyable – we always have a laugh,� Jacqui says. “It’s lovely to share it with them.�

The three are all playing upper-class, wealthy characters. Jacqui says Lady Catherine de Bourgh is very haughty and expects instant obedience to her wishes.

Amber describes her character, Caroline, as a smiling assassin who says horrible things to people and finds anyone below her station in life not worth talking to.

And Isobel plays Mr Darcy’s little sister Georgiana, an accomplished young woman, who plays exquisite piano and who embroiders. “We all flounce about with lots of pomp and think we are wonderful,� Amber says.

Pride and Prejudice will mark Amber’s 20th play and it will be her daughter Isobel’s second production.

The family trio also performed together last year in Richard the Third by Skin of Our Teeth.

Jacqui made her stage debut at age four in ballet and tap dancing and has spent the past 61 years on the stage in varied roles. “All I ever wanted to be was an actress. Mum came home one day and found all the neighbourhood mothers sitting on the front lawn and I would charge them a penny to come in and watch me dance,â€? she laughs. “My father was a performer (musician), so it’s a very entrenched thing in the family ‌ Performance is very

much in our blood.� At 30, Jacqui went back to study at Deakin University and completed a degree in performing arts and literature.

She also spent time as the co-ordinator of the Diploma of Small Companies and Community Theatre at The Gordon.

Amber grew up around Peninsula Players and started acting at age seven.

Isobel says she fell in love with theatre when she was working backstage for Geelong Repertory Theatre Company. “It was really good because they let me in and made me feel a part of it,� she says. “I also love being on the stage and being in front of the audience.�

For Jacqui, theatre is a culmination of everything she is fascinated by – history, the human condition and our psyche. “An actor has to really delve so much into a character to find what makes them tick,� she says. � jmillard@theweekyreview.com.au

Christine says. “I have read it numerous times and I love it.

It’s my all-time favourite book. I love all the characters, even the horrible ones.�

About 30 people are working on the production, including 23 in the cast.

Christine says it features a spread of experience. “There are experienced people like Jacqui and people who are doing their first show,� she says.

Christine says the book was the first in western literature to have a female protagonist as the hero. “Elizabeth doesn’t marry for wealth or convenience or because someone tells her she should, she marries for love. “Back then it was quite a shocking thing and shocking to her parents,� she says.

The director also says it’s a complex story, but one that is intriguing. �

ourteen years ago, city boy Chris Balazs left his busy life in Melbourne and immersed himself in the world of beef farming, just outside Geelong.

Chris and his sister, Gen, who has a farm on the other side of Bannockburn, started with Hereford cattle that were sold to saleyards.

Four years ago, tired of the poor returns, the pair decided to take matters into their own hands. They started a “paddock to plate” farming company.

They took control of every aspect of the supply chain – from breeding and farming to butchering, processing and selling to consumers, in doing so cutting down the distance their meat has to travel.

The business was initially known as SageBeef, but has recently been rebranded SageChoice, reflecting the addition of lamb to its range. From the start, Chris and Gen aimed to supply premium meat to family and friends and a couple of farmers’ markets.

“We started doing one [beast] a month. Jump forward four years and we are now in five stores throughout

Directions • In a slow cooker, combine the ribs, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, brown sugar, water, green onion bottoms and two tablespoons of the orange juice. Make sure the slow cooker is deep enough that the ribs are submerged in the liquid.

• Slow cook the ribs for about three hours or until the meat is tender and falling off the bones. Remove the ribs from the braising liquid and cover to keep warm. Heat the barbecue hot plate on high.

• Drain the fat from the liquid in the slow cooker and discard. Place the remaining juices in a medium saucepan with ¼ cup hoisin sauce and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the liquid until only about 1¼ cups remain. Push through a fine-meshed strainer, discarding the solids. Stir in the remaining two tablespoons of orange juice and the lemon juice.

• Place the ribs on the barbecue and take the reduced sauce, coating the ribs well with the sauce. Sear both sides, until the ribs are sealed and crispy.

• Remove from barbecue and serve. Use remaining sauce to pour over each portion and garnish each with the orange zest. ●

ocal author and dietician Anne Hillis has spent more than three decades helping mothers understand infant nutrition. She is also the co-author of Breast Bottle Bowl, a bestseller of fuss-free recipes for babies and young children.

Anne’s daughter and a mother of three, Rowena Gray, is a registered nurse, midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant who specialises in postnatal care and breastfeeding education.

So it was no surprise when they joined forces with Geelong publisher Melissa Branagh to produce Born to Breastfeed, a new guide tackling Australia’s declining breastfeeding rate.

Australia has one of the world’s lowest breastfeeding rates as most new mothers fall short of World Health Organisation recommendations to breastfeed for the first six months.

“It’s both a privilege and great honour to write Born to Breastfeed with a woman who is not only a well-respected nutritionist and author in her own right, but is also my mum,” Rowena says.

“For as long as I can remember, mum has been a passionate advocate for the health and well-being of mothers, babies and their growing families … about mothers having easy access to good and accurate information on infant feeding and nutrition, something I could never fully appreciate until becoming a mother myself.

Rowena says the book aims to bring good, helpful and useful breastfeeding information into one resource.

“It was born out of mum’s extensive experience in raising a family combined with years of supporting and educating fellow health professionals and mums on infant health,” she says.

“Breastfeeding is the backbone of early nutrition and a key influence on adult health, intellect and longevity.

Research shows that people who were breastfed as babies are less likely to be overweight or obese, less prone to

diabetes and better performers in intelligence tests.”

Melissa Branagh, a publisher with Coretext Books, says the easy-to-use guidebook was designed to help mothers enjoy a positive breastfeeding experience.

She had been part of a five-way contest for the two-bedroom character weatherboard and Marcus Falconer (Hodges) was about to bring the hammer down when she snuck in another bid.

It was a close thing – colleague Jeff Begg spotted the woman’s offer just before Marcus was about to knock the property down.

The action, in front of 50 onlookers, had started with a vendor bid of $370,000 and at $440,000 it was on the market.

It took another 21 bids, including the young woman’s last-gasp effort, before it was all done at $484,000.
