MY VIEW \ KATRINA HALL ON THE TRACKS OF HER LIFE

T

he minute I got off the plane in Adelaide the Paul Kelly song of the same name popped into my head and it never left for the two days I was there. And it did occur to me, walking around those very well-planned Adelaide streets, that a lot of people might suffer from song association problems brought on by Kelly’s music. I have them frequently when I’m at the MCG, Kings Cross, and the song about his baby who never let him sleep was on high rotation in the middle of the night around here for a while. And here’s a really embarrassing admission. Every time I change the sheets on my bed, a Bob Seger song about someone living inside someone else’s heart, comes into my head. From out of nowhere. It was the soundtrack to the ’80s movie About Last Night, and it played out in a scene where Demi Moore changed the sheets on the bed she shared with Rob Lowe and, as lame as it sounds, that moment and

that song has just stuck, maybe because About Last Night was ridiculously aspirational for us girls back then, in our early 20s, who thought shacking up with someone even remotely like Rob Lowe would have been something pretty exciting (still might, if I’m honest). And making fettuccine with pecan dressing (sad I remember so much from that film) for darling Rob on New Year’s Eve, working in advertising, hanging out at the baseball, you know, it all looked like a bit of a cool life because the reality was I spent most of my days back then out ridiculously late and in a whole bunch of

grungy Melbourne pubs, which meant I barely managed to see daylight on weekends, so doing any kind of linen washing probably was worth putting a soundtrack to. I do need to say here quite emphatically that my view on the realities of domestic cohabitation have changed considerably, and changing sheets on a shared bed is now most definitely not soundtrack worthy, film-worthy or even note-worthy. Bob Seger, Paul Kelly – those guys have a lot to answer to. And Cyndi Lauper: my beloved says every time he thinks of his first girlfriend, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun comes into his head, because that’s what she told him was the case, in all seriousness, like it was her anthem, or her excuse, for what I don’t know – that crazy perm, that bright red bubble skirt perhaps. I’ve seen the photos. Anyway, song associations can be very hard to shake. Every morning, when the kids get up, it’s Good Morning Sunshine often replaced soon after by Don’t Bring Me Down. And I do wonder how many parents know the words to the Frozen soundtrack, because Let it Go can be a useful song for a range of situations including driving, housework, and finding an empty packet of Mint Slices that you’ve hidden and someone else has found. Another favourite is the ’70s song Afternoon Delight, which tends to pop up when I’m having a nap or something pretty yummy. I’m sure that’s not what the delightful bit in this song is all about, but it works for me. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au WE WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK @

ooty’s back and Cats legend Billy Brownless shares his thoughts on Geelong’s chances in 2015, the inspiring coach behind his stellar career and why he loves calling Geelong home each summer. The Geelong Football Club this year will … be very competitive again. Loving the new recruits Mitch Clark and Nakia Cockatoo. The Cats seem to be a lot fitter. Certainly a top five finish.

Melbourne for the footy season and, when that finishes, I go back to Geelong. What I like about Geelong is … Pakington Street, Simonds Stadium and the fact you can park out the front of where you are going or pretty close to. It has everything you want minus the traffic of Melbourne.

The highlight of my career was … kicking the goal after the The player to watch is … Cockatoo, with his siren against Footscray blistering pace, I think fans will love him. to win the 1994 qualifying final. “you can This time of the year … you can feel Playing in four feel the the buzz around town. When I first came down I was the Kardinia Park groundsman for a couple of years of playing for the Cats, then moved to the State Bank, Highton. Geelong in the 1980s was … great. A big city. I came from a little country town so Geelong was a big city … it had nightclubs and pubs and things. I loved it. If I could sum up Geelong, I would say … still a bloody good place to live. The most challenging part of The Footy Show is … there’s no real challenge but what you do worry about is what Sam [Newman] or Shane [Crawford] might get up to as the show is live and they do get up to interesting things.

My favourite way to relax in Geelong on a Sunday is to … walk down to Pako Street, have some breakfast and catch up on some reading without anyone interrupting me. APRIL 9, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 5

Another Neighbours star is set to tread the path to Hollywood. But hers is a dream that started in Geelong, writes NOEL MURPHY

S

he’s the darling of Ramsay Street, following in the footsteps of some big names and, like her TV alter-ego she’s friendly and a little disarmingly candid, perhaps even a touch of the ingénue. In the nicest possible way, of course. Blessed also with terrific photogenic looks, it’s little surprise that Jenna Rosenow is being tipped as the next big thing to head from Oz television to Tinseltown’s silver screens and a global audience. It’s the Neighbours thing – grab a keen, talented Aussie and get them out to the world. Think Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Natalie Imbruglia, Jason Donovan, Delta Goodrem, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Holly Valance – all are testament to the Erinsborough express incubator, breeding ground of stars. Not that Rosenow is getting ahead of herself. She’s well-grounded and hard-working – rusted onto the job as it were. But she is keen to try her hand across the Pacific next year. “I’m into my third year with Neighbours now [playing Amber Turner]. I’ve got roughly six months left and I think I’ll move on,” she says. “It’s funny, with my career at this stage, and I know it’s a little bit cliché, but I’m heading to LA. I have management, agents, ready to get me there, but I also want to keep eye on what’s going on in Australia. “I know it’s a very different game there but I have a couple of friends who already live and work there. Everyone’s experience is different, of course, but I’m very excited to start my own journey.”

COVER STORY

It might seem that Rosenow, at 23, has only just started that journey. But she has almost two decades in the acting game, from before she appeared in Pale, Mako Mermaids, Border Protection Squad, Paper Planes or Neighbours. She’s garnered nominations for Britain’s Inside Soap Awards’ best daytime star, and most popular actress at the Logies. “I started because my older sister Lauren has Asperger’s syndrome and mum (Kim) thought she’d put her into private acting lessons to help with her social skills,” she says. “I saw her doing that and I loved it. So mum put me in, too. “I was six years old when I started private lessons with Geelong Screen Actors. I grew up in Ballarat but all my acting classes were in Geelong. Every week I travelled from Ballarat and my family has always kind of lived in Geelong. When I was 18, my parents moved to Geelong. “I went to school at Ballarat but I didn’t go to university; there was nothing there I was interested in. I just knew I wanted to be an actor when I finished school. But I did a few different jobs first – I worked in a gym, in cafés, in retail, but nothing stuck really. “As far as getting acting work, I had agents working for me and, because I’d been in the industry since I was very young, I knew the usual process. I’ve had three agents; the first when I was quite young, the second I didn’t quite connect with and the third, now, Heidi [Pietzner] with Williams Management has been just right for me ” Screen Actors Australia’s Geelong boss John McGlynn, who has groomed a troupe of Neighbours and Home and Away actors, describes Rosenow as the most focused student to come through his doors in a generation of young hopefuls. He has no doubts about her Hollywood prospects. “She came to us from a very young age and has always worked very hard at it. Her passion has always been screen acting and she’s always wanted to be a star,” he says. “She’s always been a really nice person and very dedicated on being successful in acting. She has lovely parents who have been very supportive and she’s very talented, has great looks for TV and a great work ethic. “Jenna has a great look for the screen but it’s her

6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 9, 2015

dedication and focus that take her beyond the others.” Rosenow attests to that work ethic. Given the workload of Neighbours, with its rapid turnaround of episodes, it’s a fair bet she wouldn’t have lasted long without it. “I do a lot of preparation for Neighbours. I’ll prepare the night before – sit down and go over the script, figure what I need to be doing and then just go on to set,” she says. “With learning lines, I’ve always been very lucky. I think that’s one of the things that attracted me to acting, I have quite a good memory and I’ve always found learning lines fairly easy. “It’s not uncommon to be up before six in the morning and not home until after 7pm. Basically, most of my time is spent at work with Neighbours … I love it there. It’s just like a little family, it’s a great life, I couldn’t be happier. I have great friends and it’s all pretty different every day.”

R

osenow’s partner is Neighbours co-star Chris Milligan, who plays Kyle Canning. They live in Malvern, “close to everything”. Their work roles and workload dovetail neatly together and, without trying to sound too glib, life’s good – fun, exciting, challenging and busy. “He’s very good, with our jobs and life everything works really well, he’s my best friend,” Rosenow says. “And LA, he’s coming with me, he’ll be finishing up this year too.” Rosenow says that despite the film-set pace of Neighbours, roles and lines aren’t so prescriptive as to not allow some tweaking by the actors. “We don’t work with writers as such but Neighbours is really good in, like, working with directors. If there’s an issue about saying something we don’t think the person would say, they’re generally happy to work with us, happy to make it sound more like our characters,” she says. “After all, we know our characters the best. “I feel that Amber is a kind of typical teenage girl. She’s really sweet but teenagers are sulky and naïve too and, as characters in TV, we can’t be all good all the time. Life experience definitely helps with some story lines but where I haven’t experienced in real life what

“I’m very excited to start my own journey … I’m never as happy as when I’m acting”

I have to play, it’s easy enough to get the right mindset, to think, ‘How would I really respond if this happened?’. And often you’ll know someone who’s been through some of the things, which helps make it kind of easy enough to do.” Unlike Amber Turner, Rosenow is not into horses off-screen. In fact, outside interests are hard to maintain with her workload. But surfing is one thing she’d like to learn and she’d like to have another crack at skydiving after completing a maiden jump – a birthday present from Milligan. Rosenow is, judging by her Instagram profile, animal-obsessed, a Seeing Eye Dogs Australia ambassador and a Harry Potter enthusiast. She likes being a former mermaid, going to movies, doing Pilates, trying new restaurants and is starting to turn her hand to cooking. She confesses to loving to eat. But it’s acting that truly presses her buttons and for the foreseeable future will continue to do so. Why? “That’s a hard question,” she says. “I’m not sure how to answer that but I do know I’m never as happy as when I’m acting.” \ nmurphy@theweeklyreview.com.au WE WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK @

ootball, meat pies, kangaroos … with the football season upon us, the tasting panel thought it was the ideal time to put locally baked pies to the taste test. We opted for the standard beef variety from six local bakeries. All pies were served hot, with the panel considering quality, thickness, texture and bake of the pastry, as well as the smell, flavour and texture of the meat STABILTY IS and gravy and, most of all, stability – you IMPORTANT don’t want that filling – NO MEAT running down onto SPILLS your favourite footy jumper. With the recent bumper tomato season, there’s also no better time to stock up the pantry and make up a supply of sauce to get you through the winter season while barracking for your favourite team – otherwise known as Geelong Football Club. gthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

GREAT VALUE

Panel pick

Farmhouse Bakery \ $3

Ramsay’s Bakery \ $5.50

Zen Bakery \ $4.50

The panel found this oblong pie, with its well-cooked, fine golden pastry and flavoursome filling, proportionately well-balanced but a little on the salty side. It had good easy-to-eat-in-your-hand stability and was a clear winner in the value-formoney stakes.

Another square pie offering, with a pale golden pastry that could have benefited from a little more cooking but which encased the filling well.

With its fine flaky and perfectly cooked pastry and a rich meaty filling, Zen’s round pie topped the panel’s favourite list. But the generous filling meant it was probably best eaten with a knife and fork rather than as a hold-in-your-hand option.

Routleys \ $4.20

Weiser’s eiser’s Bakery \ $4

Pakington Bakery \ $4.20

A tasty square pie encased in well-cooked pastry and with a flavoursome rich filling that had a hint of pepper coming through on the end of the palate. Easy to eat in the hand at the footy – and that’s where you can get them; Routleys is the official supplier of meat pies for the Cats’ home games.

Weiser’s oval-shaped pie boasted a well-cooked pastry shell holding a dark mince filling with a thickish pastry texture.

An easy-to-eat-in-the-hand offering with a good, meaty filling and well-cooked pastry, this tasty square pie was one of the panel’s preferred pies.

ate and Nathan Veach have brought the traditional corner store back to life – with a twist. Five months after its doors opened, the Kilgour Street Grocer & Café in South Geelong is quickly cementing its place in the hearts and stomachs of nearby residents and workers. In days gone by, the corner shop or milk bar was a hub of activity, where people popped in to pick up their daily essentials such as milk and bread and at the same time caught up on the latest local news and gossip. The Geelong South couple have lovingly and painstakingly restored an old building on the corner of Kilgour and Swanston streets, which had operated as a milk bar or corner shop since the 1850s but was in need of a transformation. Kilgour Street Grocer & Café is now a one-stop shop, \ providing all of the essentials and plenty more for the neighbourhood. DECANTER ER \ BEN THOMAS LOOKS TO GERMANY FOR SEASONAL INSPIRATION

SWEET MOSEL

The Mosel, in Germany’s south-west, is Germany’s second-biggest producer of riesling. “Mosel riesling is dominated by schist soils [rock-based soil rich in magnesium and potassium but is poor in organic nutrients and nitrogen] and the combination of the cooler temperatures and schist

Christmann says. “It’s also a quite cool area, with very different soil types and it’s successful with dry-style rieslings on one hand, but also with sweet ones. “The dry-style riesling of Nahe is very vibrant, it’s lean, it’s a mineral wine, and not too full-bodied.”

(ELIZABETH CLANCY)

RACY RHEINGAU

berlin

RI STM A N N ST EFFE N CH

Further down the Rhine valley is the Rheingau. “Rheingau is similar in character to the wines of the nearby Nahe,” Christmann says. “Maybe it’s a bit better: it’s a bit warmer, so they do a more dry style, but these dry-style wines from Rheingau have to be also a bit higher in sugar. Something around 7-9 grams, for example, because Rheingau acidity is also very steely, very sharp.”

or me, this was the summer of riesling. Judging by my social media feeds, I wasn’t alone. But there’s no reason to let a change in season keep me from riesling. The myriad styles the noble grape produces make it suitable drinking all year round. Australia excels in dry, refreshing riesling and, as the days get shorter and the nights cooler, I’ll look towards the diversity in the wines from Germany for my riesling fix. From the Mosel in the north to the Pfalz down south, the style of riesling changes from sweet to off-dry and dry. Balance is the key to German riesling as winemakers strive for harmony between intense acid, flavour and sugar. In order, from sweet to dry, the major styles are auslese, spätlese, kabinett and trocken. The style is usually on the label, but knowing what each area specialises in makes choosing easy. No winemaker is better placed to talk about German riesling styles than Steffen Christmann, president of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter – a century-old association of Germany’s top wine producers. “Let us start in the north and go south, which means going from cool temperatures to warm temperatures,” says Christmann, a winemaker in Pfalz. “There are big differences in climate and in soils, and that makes rieslings in Germany quite different.”

MUNICH

makes wines more steely, more lean,” Christmann says. “Riesling at the Mosel River is mostly balanced, with higher sugar levels. Traditionally it was sweet: fantastic kabinetts, light and elegant, more complex spätlese and very dense auslese.”

SWEET & DRY NAHE

“Then we come to the next area on the journey, also a river that goes into the River Rhine. It’s the Nahe,”

“The next area on the River Rhine is Rheinhessen, where it’s becoming warmer,” Christmann says. “There is a real difference between the north and south in the region. In the north, it’s close to Rheinhessen and to the Rheingau River, and in the south it’s coming over to the next area, Pfalz. “Rheinhessen is one of the most successful areas for dry riesling in Germany.” Pfalz is the largest single producer of riesling in the world, with 6000 hectares planted with riesling vines. “It is maybe the magic point for dry style, because it’s cool enough to have the crispy acidity and the nice minerality, but it’s warm enough to have a good structure and a full body,” Christmann says. “You could do perfect dry rieslings with very low sugar levels, 2-5 grams, it’s perfectly round, you don’t need more.” \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

ighton shopping centre on Barrabool Road is at the other end of the world from the glamorous, millionaire yachting scene of the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Florida. But, for café owner Simon Bryant, it was exactly this world of the globe-trotting rich and glamorous that began his journey into hospitality and specialist coffee. Bryant grew up in Highton, attended St Joseph’s College and, a few years later, took a newly acquired commerce degree all the way to London to forge his financial future. “What I discovered quite quickly was that pen-pushing was definitely not for me. I just couldn’t do it,” he says. “I’m drawn to the outdoors. I’ve always been on the water surfing or lifesaving. “I had a cousin who crewed on the Sultan of Brunei’s vessel. I thought, ‘Why not? I’ll take a chance on the boats’, so I flew down to Florida. I’m talking about luxury private super motor yachts up to 150 feet [45.7 metres] long. This is the ultimate high-end hospitality on the high seas. “I was a first mate and engineer. I learnt on the job. We’d sail the vessel to wherever the owner wanted it and then take them cruising. “It was lucrative but exhausting. It’s hard work. It certainly builds in you a strong work ethic and a discipline for attention to detail. It serves you well for life afterwards. “I did enjoy working with the chefs on board and from this whole environment I knew I wanted to open my own business when I got back to Australia.” Bryant opened 63 Degrees in Highton in 2006. A year later, he launched another café with the same name in Pakington Street and then a third in Ryrie Street in the city. “I opened in Highton to learn the ropes of hospitality. But I soon had three on the go and I also headed up the café at the Cotton On headquarters in North Geelong. “It was all a bit too much. I now focus on Pakington Street (head barista is Simon ‘The Champ’ Chiovitti) and Highton. I also got married. Carly and I now have three children – Maggie, 4, Albie, 3, and Duke four months. “Don’t your priorities change? Children and family are the driving force behind everything we do. Effectively, we run the business from home. Carly’s part of the think tank and ideas process behind the business.”

FOOTBALL \ Jimmy Bartel is one of many Geelong Falcons players who have become superstars with the help of Michael Turner, writes WAYNE BUTTNER

M

ichael Turner takes his “father figure” role seriously at the Geelong Falcons – right down to telling players to get a haircut and pull up their socks, literally. But when that type of advice leads to being an AFL premiership captain, who wouldn’t listen? Turner has been the AFL regional manager with the Falcons for more than 20 years – developing young players, handing out advice and churning out AFL superstars. Think Gary Ablett jnr, Cameron Ling, Jimmy Bartel, Matthew Scarlett, Luke Hodge, Nick Maxwell, Jonathan Brown, Patrick Dangerfield and Travis Boak. Eight AFL captains, numerous premiership players, Brownlow and Norm Smith medallists. Every week during the football season there are around 30 former Falcons playing AFL matches, often dominating. That’s more than a full football team. Turner and his team have become Australia’s most successful training ground for AFL footballers. There are many reasons why Turner thinks the Falcons’ program is so successful – although he constantly credits the great team around him. But every team needs a manager, coach, mentor … call it what you like. Turner is that person for the Falcons. He believes his time as a teacher, champion footballer and father himself has given him the skills to help young players achieve their football dreams. Then there’s his own father’s influence. Turner (245 games from 1974-1988) and his dad Leo (130 games, 1947-1954) both played on the wing for Geelong and – in what Turner describes as the highlight of his football career – both were named on the wing in Geelong’s team of the century. “There’s a lot of good father and sons out there but not two who have both made team of the century in the same position,” says Turner, who has two sons of his own, Levi and Che. “Dad was a big influence in my life, and not only in football. He kept me on the straight and narrow. I had a lot of respect for him and it helped level me out and keep me from going too far. “I was a bit of wild boy in my 20s, but I think that’s also helped in my work with the young players. “There’s a lot of ‘experts’ out there who will tell you what’s wrong and right. But often they’re what I call cleanskins – they’ve never done a thing wrong in their life, they haven’t lived through mistakes. “I can see the black and white, both sides, and at times it helps provide good advice on decision-making. “Most of us do some stupid things when you’re young. We’re constantly telling our young players, ‘Don’t put anything on Facebook that you wouldn’t want your mum to see!’.” But back to that “fatherly” advice that helped one of Geelong’s favourite sons go on to become an AFL premiership captain. “As a 17-year-old, Cameron Ling didn’t get picked up in the draft because he was what you would call a stocky full-forward,” Turner says. “I was worried he wouldn’t get drafted again the next year, so I suggested he get his hair cut so that he would look more athletic and taller. “We also got him a larger pair of shorts as his tight-fitting shorts tended to make his legs look bigger. Finally, to make him look more like the athlete that he was, we got him to pull his socks up and have his mum cut his shorts shorter so that his legs looked longer. “We always knew he would work his backside off to be the very best. So once he was there it was no surprise 12 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 9, 2015

that he went on to become a great player, leader and premiership captain.” Bartel, another Cats legend, got some unusual advice from Turner. “Jimmy was playing with us in the under-16s – but didn’t make the Victoria Country team,” Turner says. “At the time he was wearing a big helmet as he’d suffered concussion a couple of times playing with Bell Park and, naturally, his mum was looking after his best interests. But it made him look shorter and slower, so I suggested he dump it next season. “He went on to play in the 17 and then 18-year-old All Australian teams, got drafted and he’s now a superstar. It’s just one of those quirky little things that can make a difference. “AFL clubs can be pretty conservative. I’m not saying they don’t like kids with long hair or stuff like that – if you’re a superstar you’ll get away with it. But if you’re on the edge you’ve got to present a certain image to them so they are prepared to say, ‘This kid is worth the risk – he’s level-headed, he trains hard’.” There are lots of stories around that show just how much Turner puts in to provide his charges with the best chance to play their best possible football. He says the Geelong Falcons provide a lifestyle program, rather than a football program. “When players come to us, it’s about them becoming better on and off the field, about how best to train and get the best from their body, learning about sleep, the best diet, psychology and hydration,” Turner says. “To be an elite athlete you have to get your lifestyle right.” There’s also a lot more to learn about how the modern game is played. “AFL nowadays is all about defence,” he

“Dad was a big influence in my life … he kept me on the straight & narrow” says. “A player may have the ball 40 times in a match, but how much has that influenced the overall game? His possessions may only add up to three or four minutes of play … what has he been doing the rest of the time? “We take players from local clubs and aim to bridge the gap between knowledge and experience so that if drafted by an AFL club they are ready. “The difference at an AFL level is that it’s full time, fully professional, and very intense. But when they come back, our players say they were prepared for it. The system works and if you don’t come through the system, good luck.” The stats confirm that. The Falcons are No.1 in Australia for draft numbers, games played and awards won. There are 45 Falcons on the AFL list in 2015 – far more than any other development region. Playing at an AFL level is tough – and Turner would know. He played 245 games with the Cats, was captain for three seasons and an All Australian in 1979. While Turner talks about the importance of maintaining a positive approach, he’s still ready to let players know when they need to pick up their game. “We can also be brutally honest and, if a player is doing the wrong thing, I’ll sit them in my office and I’ll give it to them,” he says.

“They have to be prepared for the environment they may end up in. If they end up at Carlton with Mick Malthouse or Hawthorn with Alastair Clarkson, it’s on you know.” Of course, not every Falcons player ends up playing AFL. In last year’s Geelong Football League grand final (Leopold versus Colac), almost 30 ex-Falcons played. “Our aim is to get players to an AFL and VFL level, but we also provide future player and coaches for local leagues,” Turner says. He says it’s important to understand that players develop at different stages. “There’s a chronological age and biological age – and my own experience as a late-developer in football has helped me realise this. Nick Maxwell, for instance, didn’t make any of our squads until he was 18,” he says. “Gary Ablett jnr was a very small kid and late developer. In under-15s, he was the last kid picked – held back by his biological development. “We let him go as a 16-year-old because we wanted him to mature and he went out to Modewarre and played. He came back as he was turning 17, had grown enough and was drafted by the Cats. “Mind you, a lot of parents went off their tree when he did get picked in our squad, claiming it was only

because of his dad. We haven’t had too many calls since to say we got it wrong.” But Turner says all the skills and preparation in the world won’t help without the right attitude. “If you don’t have the right attitude you can’t play at a high level – the right attitude is almost always our first priority. “As an example, Nathan Ablett was a great player with fantastic skills, but didn’t have the same attitude as Gary. It’s all about attitude.” With a long list of superstars having come through his time at the Falcons, Turner is reluctant to name a single best player. “They all have different skills at different ages – for instance, Luke Hodge was the best player I have ever seen at 17 years old. “Matthew Scarlett is probably the best full-back ever, Ling is a great leader … while Bartel is an absolute superstar but isn’t as interested in taking up a key leadership role such as being captain.” But when pushed, the conversation comes back to Ablett jnr. “A late developer, a great kid … yes, probably the greatest player ever.” \ wbuttner@theweeklyreview.com.au » Geelong versus Fremantle, Simonds Stadium, Sunday, April 12, 1.10pm. f, as the saying goes, trends come and go but style is eternal, then this winter should be about how the two can be friends beyond the catwalk. This autumn/winter’s four key trends prove to be friendly arrivals for the cooler months. There’s no midriffs to bare or V-shaped skirts above the knee; instead winter is all about ’70s bohemian, masculine silhouettes, sport resort and vivid graphics that fit most body shapes. It’s easy to pick a theme and run with it. The queen of ’70s revival, Carla Zampatti, puts forward her best retro stance this season with a collection that leans on flared, wide-legged pants, body suits and masculine tailoring. She fits a few of the trends that are surfacing and that’s what makes her versatile range a winner on all fronts. One of the country’s more experienced designers, she has focused her gaze on the past without losing her modern touch. Helen O’Connor’s label Thurley borrows from the ’70s as well, with lots of lace and flowing cuts that hint at a bohemian style. She doesn’t mind a romantic nod to a bygone era. There’s movement and flow in her garments as much as there is a sculptural push. Bianca Spender certainly waves the ’70s flag in her latest range – from wide-leg pants to collared shirts, and floor-length gowns that might be modernist visions but have kickbacks to the era. Ellery has always found the ’70s appealing and

the latest collection doesn’t wane – it’s boho meets chic. Donna Player, David Jones’ group executive for merchandise, says there’s a ’70s swagger to the new season. “We are seeing the return of pinstripes, flared denim, culottes, capes and power suiting; nostalgic pieces with a boy-girl charm that features in our international and Australian designer collections.” Player says this winter is about mixing up labels – think local, act global. She doesn’t mind turning to local brands such as Witchery, Saba or Seed for layering basics and coats, and matching them with graphic party dresses by Josh Goot, pastel lace by Lover and even a tailored suit by the glam rock’n’roll-inspired Saint Laurent collection, Alexander McQueen and others. Masculine suiting makes a comeback – the likes of Camilla and Marc hint at the sexy androgynous look while a new kid on the block, LXÉ (which sells online only), has gorgeous cream pants that hint at boy power with a feminine perk. Vivid graphic prints also return with attitude. Adapt to the times and introduce a graphic print with jackets, skirts or pants to inject colour to muted tones. The sport resort look is where street cool meets couture glam. This is the world where fancy sneakers are allowed with evening skirts. Pairing leisurewear in your day-to-day wardrobe is a trend that will continue this winter. \ jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au

300 (MICHELLE KELCEY)

SPORT \ Nathan Herbert is about to notch up a major Supercats milestone, writes ANDREW MATHIESON

16 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 9, 2015

F

or Nathan Herbert, all things in early life pointed to basketball. One was always his dad, Craig, who played 127 games for the Geelong Supercats, including 102 during the club’s halcyon days in the National Basketball League, from 1982 to 1987. Another was the elite Supercat names from three decades past, Cal Bruton and James Crawford. The NBL hall-of-famers would often drop past the Herbert family home, sometimes to down a beer or even to heat up the barbecue, at an age when Herbert was more dribbling down his bib than down a court. “I remember them more through pictures with them and videos than anything else back then,” 30-year-old Herbert says of the pair, who brought the basketball craze to Geelong. “Dad is really good mates with those guys and they were definitely around the house a bit. “Funnily, I ended up playing against CJ Bruton, Cal’s son, in the NBL, in which he’s had an amazing career.” Then there was the Supercats’ locker room. The scene before and after games surrounded by these giants was similar to what was happening with the Ablett clan down the road at Kardinia Park. “Obviously, with dad playing basketball, I was always around the Supercats,” Herbert says. “They’ve been around my whole life.” Though they would never claim the same standing as the Abletts, the Herberts can match their football peers with a club record of most games for a father/son combination. That stands at 426 Supercats games. That number will click over by one more when Nathan Herbert plays game 300 for the Supercats against the Ballarat Miners at the Geelong arena on Saturday. “I have played 14 years now and have been reasonably injury-free, except when I did my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) but that was in a different [NBL] season,” Herbert says. “I think if you stay pretty healthy, you’re going to clock up those games. “But it is one of those things when you look back, you think 300 games is a big commitment, as we don’t do it for a job – we do it on top of full-time work and family. “It’s a big thing not just for me, but especially for mum and dad, who have followed me all the way through

“It certainly wasn’t like I had to sit down and make a decision – basketball was always my sport of choice, my No.1, and I went that way.” That inconspicuous switch makes Herbert’s climb to the top level more remarkable: from initially earning a development spot on an NBL roster to winning a historic championship with a rookie club all happened in the space of 18 months. In total, Herbert would play 120 games for Melbourne’s South Dragons and the Adelaide 36ers over four seasons. An invitation to the Australian Boomers’ camp was the realisation of Herbert’s journey from his untapped potential.

“i think if you stay pretty healthy, you’re going to clock up those games” and they have got a lot of enjoyment out of it too.” Herbert senior was not only a half-decent guard, but the proverbial backbone of the fledgling NBL club that reached the 1982 grand final in its inaugural season. As the captain – with the team initially under the moniker of just the Cats – Craig Herbert led one state-league championship year and the maiden first three NBL seasons, with the likes of Bruton and Crawford sharing the team’s best and fairest awards during his reign. He stepped away from a stint as Geelong assistant coach the year his son joined the now South East Australian Basketball League club in 2002. He has continued to be a big part of the sport and this year was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to basketball as an administrator, coach and player. But for the family’s latest Supercat, it was hard work from the start. Despite good genes, role models in high places and his standing as one of Geelong’s greatest local-grown basketball stories, Herbert wasn’t a natural junior. Representative honours eluded the Herne Hill teenager, who seemed more interested in pick-up games. Football did sway him for one pre-season with the elite Geelong Falcons’ under-18s program, but not making the final cut made up his mind. “I always enjoyed basketball a little bit more and playing this sport with my mates,” Herbert says.

“I never got an opportunity to get involved in anything like that as a junior,” he says. Still the Geelong Hospital cardiac nurse decided to step away from the hustle of the NBL to return to Geelong life in 2013 – and his beloved Supercats. The memories, though, are strong. “I remember my first NBL game and getting that opportunity to step up to that level,” Herbert says. “At first, you just want to play one game, score one point, but then you get the bug and you want to keep playing. “One thing that stood out there was when the South Dragons won the championship and the year when Brian Goorjian took over the club. “It was a great experience to play under one of the best coaches Australia’s ever had.” Herbert will be only the second Supercat to reach the 300-game mark behind good mate Jarrod Leonard (322). But he’s equally happy to be soon joined by local products Nick Owusu and Jamie Medved, who are each sitting on 294. “I’ve been playing with Jamie Medved and Nick Owusu nearly that whole time and guys like Jarrod Leonard and Jordan Hill, who I grew up playing with around the sport. “But for me, playing at home with them, with the best crowd in the league, is the most enjoyable thing.” \ amathieson@theweeklyreview.com.au

Family pride: Nathan Herbert with his father Craig.

THE OTHER SUPER CAT Former Supercat Jarrod Leonard was the first player to reach the magical 300-game milestone for the Geelong club. Leonard joined the club as a 17-year-old in 1995, its penultimate season in the NBL. The point guard held the Geelong captaincy every year – except for one season after a short-lived retirement – from 2001 until 2008 during the South East Australian Basketball League competition. The Supercats won three SEABL championships under his reign, and an Australian Basketball Association national title. Leonard, a teammate of Herbert’s for six of his 13 seasons, went on to play 322 games for the Supercats. “I couldn’t be happier to welcome Nath to the 300-game club,” Leonard says. “I remember him at training as a young fella and since then he’s worked extremely hard on his game and has become one of the best pure shooters the club has seen, and an even better teammate.” \

alter White’s Albuquerque is where industrial aridity meets somnambulant suburbia in the cult series Breaking Bad and its new prequel Better Call Saul. But the New Mexican city of more than half a million people scattered around the Rio Grande at 1500 metres above sea level has far more to offer than the stark scenes that appear on the hit TV shows. You can get colourfully high on the annual International Balloon Fiesta in October, turn your knuckles white by rafting down the river, or spend hours wandering the streets of the Old Town, built by the Spaniards in the early 1700s. The city is full of large earth-coloured adobe-style houses that look a lot like the one belonging to drug-fighter Hank Schrader and his shoplifting wife Marie. Walter and Skyler White’s house is in a less affluent area. No.3828 Piermont Drive each week attracts roughly 1600 curious cars full of people from all around the world – Greece, Norway and Malaysia, to name a few. “Those are the ones I count,” says the woman who owns the house when we drop by to take photos. “The filmmakers just liked the look of my house, but the indoor scenes were done in a studio.” She’s generally genial, she says, except when “some idiots” throw pizza on her roof, in a scene straight from the show. \ hgill@theweeklyreview.com.au

The food is New Mexican at its best – all served with fresh salsa verde or roja (green chilli or red chilli sauce). \ (scenes were filmed at the New Mexican fast-food joint Twisters), head to the palace of Punjabi food, the Taaj. The service is happy, the tandoori fish succulent, there’s sighs all round for dish after delectable dish and the family is suitably spiced up in the most authentic way. \

EAST GEELONG \ 1 GREY STREET

amily living takes on grand proportions at this standout house in an exclusive court near the Barwon River. With more than 55 squares of space set over two levels, the options for recreation and entertainment are endless. Not only are there four separate living areas – potentially one for every family member – but also a huge enclosed outdoor entertainment area. This decked room is the ultimate spot for year-round gatherings, with a built-in bar and enough floor space for a large crowd. In summer you can throw open the glass sliding doors and drift out to the in-ground swimming pool for a refreshing dip. Careful consideration has been given to the property’s floor plan, which has been designed to adapt to the changing needs of families. While there are many rooms, each has its own feel and several can be closed off when not in use. Earthy-toned tiles with a decorative mosaic strip in the entrance hallway set the tone for the neutral décor throughout. Off here you’ll find a study and spacious main bedroom, both have soft grey carpet and plantation shutters. There’s a palatial feel to the parents’ sleeping quarters thanks to his and hers walk-in wardrobes and the en suite with its double shower and twin shower roses. Across the hall is the double garage, which has a home gym and storage room attached. The first of the living rooms sits opposite the internal timber staircase. Dark timber plantation shutters set into an internal wall provide a visual link from this room to the open-plan kitchen, meals and dining area behind it. The contemporary kitchen is at the centre of the main hub and has an L-shaped breakfast bar, quality stainless-steel appliances, a walk-in pantry and glass splashback. Around the corner is a quiet passage where’ll you find a large rumpus room. It’s currently set up as a home theatre room, with dark walls to recreate that cinema experience, but could easily be adapted. Children rule upstairs, where they have their own living room set between four bedrooms, a bathroom and second computer room. This practical study is designed with homework in mind and has a built-in desk to accommodate at least three workstations. Each of the bedrooms on this second level has a walk-in wardrobe for added storage. The largest of the four bedrooms is an ideal guest suite as it has an en suite and private balcony. The front and back gardens have been professionally landscaped. Mature trees provide an attractive screen, while artificial turf keeps maintenance to the minimum. The swimming pool and spa form the centrepiece of the backyard design and are enclosed in a glass pool fence. The pool itself is self-cleaning and has both solar and gas heating. A large area behind the garage has a spongy soft fall surface, similar to that found in playgrounds. It’s perfect for basketball and other sports, with a retractable net to keep balls enclosed. There’s also an in-ground trampoline. Other features include ducted heating, which extends to the entertainment area and an alarm system. This property is in a quiet location, just across the road from the popular Barwon River reserve. \ NICOLE MAYNE

Buxton East Geelong \ 5201 6977

Auction \ May 2 at 11am

Set in a quiet street, this property is a beautiful blend of old and new. In 12 months it has been transformed from a modest cottage to a contemporary three-bedroom house. The renovation has retained the integrity of the original, and the design is thoughtful, light and simple. The living quarters are at the front – the main bedroom has an en suite, while the others share the large main bathroom. A sitting room, which could be used as a fourth bedroom, is here too. In the rear extension, angled ceilings and polished concrete flooring create a sense of space and style. Feature pendant lights and timber panelling are highlights of the modern kitchen, which looks over the open-plan meals/dining zone. Tucked away around the corner is a study nook – private but still central enough so you don’t miss any of the household action. The north-facing backyard with low-maintenance garden is sure to be a popular place. It has fence screenings for privacy and links to the single lock-up garage with rear lane access. \ REBECCA THOMPSON

Families with energetic children will appreciate the space inside and out at this contemporary house in Armstrong Creek. The four-bedroom property is set on a 640-square-metre allotment – a rare find in most new estates. It was built by Hotondo Homes in 2013 and offers a mix of open-plan and formal living, along with separate zones for adults and kids. The thoughtful floor plan ensures the lounge and main bedroom at the front can be closed off if necessary. Both these rooms are carpeted and have timber window frames to complement the façade and landscaped garden. Beyond here, the family can come together in the open-plan kitchen, meals and living room. From the kitchen sink, you have a great view of the adjoining outdoor entertainment area, which sits under the roofline. The three remaining bedrooms are grouped off a hallway with the family bathroom, toilet and laundry. The large L-shaped backyard provides ample space for a shed or play equipment. There is side access for a boat, trailer or caravan. \ NICOLE MAYNE

A beautiful renovation has added to the inviting feel of this attractive red brick house in Geelong West. Much of the property’s original character has been retained thanks to a sensitive design that blends contemporary luxuries with timeless natural materials. Bold black trim on the traditional timber windows offers the first hint of the modern transformation. Inside is the classic combination of polished timber floorboards and neutral colours. Every inch of space has been maximised, right down to the entrance hall where there is a built-in cabinet. There are three bedrooms off this hallway, including the main with a walk-in wardrobe and quality en suite. The open-plan kitchen, dining and living room at the back opens onto a north-facing deck ideal for entertaining. This living space has a gas log fire and a reverse cycle air-conditioner to keep you comfortable in all seasons. A cosy study off the dining room has french doors onto the back deck. A large yard with single lock-up garage and carport off a rear lane complete the picture. \ NICOLE MAYNE

There is plenty of scope to put your own stamp on this Edwardian house in the heart of Geelong’s premier school precinct. The original floor plan has already undergone a significant renovation in the form of a contemporary rear extension set over two levels. A glass conservatory halfway along the central hallway signals a sharp departure from the four traditional rooms at the front of the house. Where these three bedrooms and lounge have modest windows, the newer section uses full-height glazing, creating a sense of openness in the modern L-shaped kitchen, meals and living area at the rear. Parquetry flooring and the angled roof are highlights of this space. In the kitchen, a solid timber bench contrasts with the dark blue cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. Upstairs, there is a large main bedroom with a balcony, en suite and walk-in wardrobe. The central bathroom downstairs has sliding doors onto an outdoor spa. There is a separate two-storey studio at the back of the property across a paved Mediterranean courtyard. \ NICOLE MAYNE

OCEAN GROVE \ 60 THACKER STREET Uninterrupted views of the Barwon River and Barwon Heads bluff make for a spectacular outlook from this two-storey beachside property. Just seven years old, the house has been designed to make the most of its elevated position, with multiple living areas facing the sea. On the ground floor, the open-plan kitchen, meals and living area occupies prime position. With sliding doors onto a covered outdoor barbecue area, it provides an impressive space to entertain friends or summer guests. This level features polished timber floorboards and contemporary finishes. Stone benchtops are combined with glossy cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen. The bespoke glass splashback – with large, coloured, mosaic-style tiles – matches contemporary leadlight windows nearby. The formal living room at the front has a more refined feel, thanks to an electric log heater with traditional timber mantle. There are also two bedrooms on this floor, including one with a two-way bathroom. Most of the top level is taken up by a large third living room that opens onto another deck. There are also two further bedrooms – the main has a walk-in wardrobe and beautifully presented en suite with a spa. There are two separate garages – the larger of the two has extra high ceilings and several block and tackle hoists. \ NICOLE MAYNE

Just a minutes walk to the Kardinia park recreation precinct and a short walk to Pakington Street you will not find a more inspiring renovators dream in a better location.
