said they were looking forward to working at Frankston after a three-month stint in the city.

Mr Singh hopes to follow his father into the police force and sees the job as a stepping stone to achieving his goal.

Mr Ball, a former floor layer, was looking for a change in career and Mr Richard was a police officer in Mauritius before coming to Australia.

Occasional commuter Mick Hughes of Bonbeach said he deliberately avoided travelling on trains at night because of safety issues. ‘‘This [PSOs] is great. But I still won’t be travelling at night until they are on every station as [Premier] Mr Baillieu promised,’’ he said.

Senior police will decide which stations get the extra numbers and they will start operating by next June.

A GROUP of rowdy youths, hecklers and opportunistic protesters illustrated perfectly why protective services officers were welcome news for Frankston commuters last week.

The vocal bystanders made their presence felt as television news crews and local media gathered on Frankston railway station platform for the announcement of PSOs, who began patrolling the station and surrounds last Thursday.

This brings the number of PSOs patrolling 13 train stations across Melbourne to 116.

Victoria Police plans to recruit 940 PSOs by November 2014.

Where the officers are deployed is based on factors such as how busy the train station is and the amount of reported crime and antisocial behaviour.

Three of the new officers were at the launch, along with local transit safety division’s Senior Sergeant Ian Shepherd, Frankston’s Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Whitehead, Frankston MP Geoff Shaw and Carrum MP Donna Bauer.

The police presence came in handy as hecklers, who got a little too close to the media, were quietly moved away. One man was relieved of alcohol he was carrying in a water bottle. However, the officers arrived late to stop four youths who were hanging out of a train, forcing it to delay its departure until they pulled themselves back in.

Acting Senior Sergeant Whitehead said the PSOs would allow for more effective policing in the area. ‘‘I expect this will allow us to free up resources and have more flexibility,’’ he said.

Asked if he was disappointed that Frankston was not among the first stations to get PSOs as promised, Mr Shaw said it was an indication that the station was not considered a higher risk than others. ‘‘The media needs to get on board and start saying how good Frankston is instead of putting it down. We have the largest allocation of police in the state, our crime rate is down,

Sometimes we all put rivers out of sight and out of mind.

The reality is, as readers are reading this letter

now, that 31 per cent of Australia’s rivers have been damaged in some way, less than 10 per cent of Australia’s iconic Murray cod are left and numerous species of fish in Australia are under threat.

There has been a lot of abuse and neglect around our rivers. Some have been used as sewers and waste dumping grounds.

Here’s the big positive. On Sunday, September 30, it’s World Rivers Day across the planet and Australia is joining the celebration.

In the lead-up to that day, we want schools and communities groups in your area to consider organising some kind of celebration to reconnect with rivers.

We also want people in your area to send us a photo of their favourite spot on a river in their region because we are going to build a big tribute to rivers across Australia.

Signal box fire sparks chaos on rail line

BY LEE OPITZ TRAIN services were thrown into disarray last Wednesday after a signal box between Carrum and Seaford stations on the Frankston line was destroyed by arson about 5.50pm.

Five trains carrying hundreds of passengers were stranded between platforms for up to two hours before they could alight and board buses replacing trains from Mordialloc to Frankston.

One witness reported seeing a person, hiding in trees next to the railway line, throw a rock at

the train just minutes before the fire broke out.

Services were halted for about 18 hours.

More delays are expected as permanent repairs replace the temporary measures taken to get services up and running.

Police are investigating.

Identity theft probed

INBRIEF Delays after semi-trailer rolls On the same day train services were halted near Seaford station, cars on Seaford Road faced long delays after a semi-trailer overturned on Frankston Freeway. The truck was travelling south when the driver lost control and smashed through a guard rail, narrowly missing traffic coming the other way.

The truck landed on its side near the Seaford Road off-ramp. Traffic was reduced to one lane on Seaford Road for several hours.

Motorcyclist injured A motorcyclist from Langwarrin was taken to hospital after his machine and a car collided at the roundabout at the intersection of Western Port Highway and Cranbourne-Frankston Road. The 47-year-old man was travelling west along Cranbourne-Frankston Road when he was involved in a collision with a

car travelling north driven by a 22-year-old Somerville woman. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Witnesses sought Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a video store in Bonbeach last Thursday . A man carrying a backpack entered the store on Nepean Highway just before 10.30pm, threatened the male staff member with a knife and demanded cash. The offender then fled the store with a quantity of money and DVDs. The offender is described as being dishevelled in appearance, aged in his mid-20s with red hair and goatee. He is about 175 centimetres and of a thin build. Any witnesses can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers.com.au.

FRANKSTON police want to speak to the man pictured in this security still about a series of frauds linked to a stolen wallet.

Detective Senior Constable Richard Brown said the victim lost his wallet on June 17. On June 19, a man used a driver’s licence in the lost wallet to open a credit card account at the Clive Anthony’s store in Frankston in the victim’s name and used a credit card to buy $8000 worth of electrical/computer equipment.

On June 23, the man presented the same identity details to open up a credit card account at a Harvey Norman store in Frankston in the victim’s name and bought electrical and computer goods valued at $3000.

Nancy Ayers, 89, Clarice Artis, 97, Hazel Gillbee, 84, and Trudy Bullivant, 90, met Governor Alex Chernov and Mrs Chernov (rear) at an afternoon tea held in their honour. The awesome foursome set a world record at Frankston’s Jubilee Park Aquatic Centre last month when they became the first of their combined vintage — 360 years — to complete a 4 x 50-metre relay swim. Race winners are simply amazing

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN TWO police officers are coming down off an adrenaline high after winning the latest season of the reality television series The Amazing Race Australia.

After eight months of keeping the win a secret, including from immediate family members, the pair are happy to finally be able to talk about it.

Andrew Thoday, 35, of Langwarrin, and close friend Shane Haw, 44, of Bentleigh East, said it had been difficult keeping quiet about their success. ‘‘If the police van had been bugged it would have been all out,’’ Thoday said.

The pair, who have worked together for seven years, are closer than ever after completing the race. ‘‘We both respect each other and when the other one tells you to pull your head in, you do it,’’ Haw said.

They may have been fated to take out the race after opening a fortune cookie that read: ‘‘You are going to win a contest.’’

They both agree the race was one of the hardest things they have ever done. ‘‘Nothing has wrecked us as much as the race did,’’ Thoday said. ‘‘It was incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally.’’

Although their winnings — $250,000 split evenly between them— weren’t enough for them to put their feet up and stop working, they said it was a nice bonus.

Thoday said he would put the winnings towards paying off the mortgage, educating his children and buying a new car for his wife.

Their experience in Canada, which included axe throwing and ice waterfall climbing, was a highlight for the pair. ‘‘That was the most action-packed leg of the race. We gained a lot of confidence from our success in Canada and it was at that point we thought we were actually a chance of winning it,’’ Haw said. ‘‘Even without the cabbage [winnings] you would still be satisfied. We got a taste of the world. If there is an ‘all stars’ race we’d do it tomorrow.’’

School given a health boost

BY SANDRA BULL KANANOOK Primary School has won a $46,000 makeover as the Victorian winner of the Let’s Live Better - Run Around Australia campaign.

The initiative was held by Colonial First State Global Asset Management shopping centres, in partnership with the Children’s Food Education Foundation.

Children were encouraged to include fresh food in their diets and exercise regularly. Families shopping at Bayside shopping centre earned one point for the primary school with every dollar spent. Double points were awarded for fresh food purchases.

The prize included a canteen makeover by Thermomix, $15,000 cash, $15,000 worth of sport and educational equipment and a food education seminar for pupils and their families.

Parent Nickie Fidge, who co-ordinated the school’s entry effort, said the two Thermomix appliances would come in handy for healthy cooking lessons by budding chefs.

Pupils in grades 5 and 6 hoped to use the versatile appliances, which chop and cook, to make fruit sorbets and soups with some of the

Suburban fashion on the cutting edge FASHION designer April Marie Hewat is used to the startled looks and snide comments from insiders when she says she lives and works in Cranbourne.

But with her company, April Marie Swimwear, clearly going places, the mother of three can afford to be relaxed about her suburban address and background.

Cleo magazine recently featured her tiger swimsuit — modelled by Jennifer Hawkins — and next month she will present her collection at Fashion Aid 2012, one of Melbourne’s most popular charity fund-raisers.

Early in her career, she used Sydney models, high-profile fashion photographers and tropical locations. It cost a fortune and always left her disappointed.

Now that her confidence has grown, Ms Hewat prefers local locations — the Peninsula Hot Springs, for example, or Cranbourne swimming pool — and a local creative team: Carrum Downs photographer Rebecca Le Souef and Langwarrin model Monique Wardley. ‘‘We make a good team. Bec understands what I’m after and I’m much happier with the results.

growing up on a farm in Carrum Downs. ‘‘I was lying awake one night at 3am wondering how I could make swimwear different. I ran into my dad and said ‘I know — we’ll print Australian postcards onto lycra’.’’

Later, she switched to images of plants and animals, the most distinctive being her tiger bikini. She took a risk, put an ad in Vogue and sales went through the roof. In 2009, she launched the label at Fashion Week in Sydney. ‘‘I knew nothing about the rag trade when I started — I made a lot of costly mistakes. Everyone loved what I was doing but they didn’t think I could achieve it.’’

Ms Hewat does all the swimwear and fabric design, co-ordinates the manufacture and does the marketing.

She would probably sew them too if she could.

Her husband, Paul, does the bookwork and her father is her biggest backer.

She likes working with other mothers because they understand what it’s like. ‘‘I have a beautiful home office but there are times when my kids are running around. With other mums, I don’t have to be embarrassed if there’s a toy or a biscuit on the floor. ‘‘There’s a benefit to being in the suburbs because you can be true to who you want to be.’’

School ‘let down over cash’: MP

BY LEE OPITZ THE state government is letting down the pupils at Frankston Primary School by refusing to honour a funding commitment made by the former Labor government, says Opposition education spokesman James Merlino.

Mr Merlino and South-Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Lee Tarlamis said that while the school’s teaching staff provided top rate education to their students, they were doing it in outdated facilities.

In the 2010 election campaign, Labor pledged that it would fund a $500,000 refurbishment of the school’s two-storey building — a promise that the two Labor MPs say the Coalition government should honour.

“Modern teaching methods, including using information computer technology during lessons, are more

difficult when the classroom is from another era,’’ Mr Merlino said.

Eduction Minister Martin Dixon said while the government was committed to upgrading schools it had to responsiily balance and prioritise the needs of more than 1500 government schools. ‘‘If the principal of Frankston Primary School believes the school has urgent maintenance or safety issues requiring rectification works which exceed the school’s available funds, he should contact the education department’s southern metropolitan region al office to have the matter investigated.’’

FEATURESTORY Paramedics are the frontline ‘troops’ of our healthcare system, and wouldn’t have it any other way. LEE OPITZ speaks with a relative newcomer and an old hand about how they deal with life and death on a daily basis.

A matter of life and death f nothing else, Keryn Maher is a determined woman.

The bubbly 35-year-old Somerville resident, who works in Frankston, applied three times to become a paramedic, a job she saw as a natural progression from nursing.

Ms Maher admits failing her first attempt at getting in to the service was her own fault — ‘‘I didn’t do enough study’’ — and she was knocked back on a fitness test the second time after breaking her ankle. But it was third time lucky and in 2005 she was inducted into the government’s last bridging course that paid for nursing staff to study to become paramedics. Today, all new recruits are fully university trained, at their own expense. ‘‘I feel sorry for them. The media thinks this job is quite glamorous, but in fact it can be quite simple. We might get called out for just a sore foot, or someone might just want to be made to feel better,’’ Ms Maher says. ‘‘Some think they’ve learned everything they need to know; others are really frightened. They haven’t seen anything; it could be 12 months before their first cardiac arrest and when you think they could be called to look after a child who is dying in their first couple of weeks, it would be horrible.’’

Her partner, Stuart Walker, is also a paramedic. The couple juggle shift work, time with each other, home renovations and visits from Stuart’s three young boys in an exercise of organised chaos. ‘‘They are crappy social hours. We work five weekends out of eight and you miss birthdays and Christmas and special family occasions. It’s hard to be involved in sporting activities. It probably wouldn’t work with a partner who wasn’t in emergency services. They’d resent the hours and wouldn’t understand the pressures of the job anywhere near as well.’’

Ms Maher says there is no predicting who, or what, will affect her. ‘‘We recently resuscitated a nine-day-old baby.

We did a brilliant job but I knew that baby was in for a rough time and I couldn’t stop thinking about it and the parents. Or it might be someone who has lost their partner of seven years, or thinking about the impact an injury will have on someone for the rest of their lives. ‘‘The horrible jobs get stuck in your head, and the good people you meet get stuck in your head. ‘‘Some of the sights you see, you can’t help but laugh. I’ve cried more than a few times too, especially when you relate to things in your own life. ‘‘I went to a job where twin boys had ignited a gas tank in the shed and got severely burnt. Stuart’s twin boys are the same age, and I went home and moved everything in the shed that was dangerous out of their reach.’’

She says communication skills are most important, to put people at ease and gain their trust. ‘‘The majority of people are nice to you. They

A privilege: Paramedic Bryan Cass loves his job. see you as instant help. On the other hand, being a paramedic is a big responsibility. In hospital there is a button at the back of the bed and you can call for assistance. ‘‘On the ambulance, you have 20 minutes to locate the problem and make a decision about what treatment to give. You use your fingers, eyes, and ears to decide what to do.’’

Ms Maher says workloads on both ambulance and hospital services increased dramatically when doctors stopped bulk-billing. ‘‘Really, you can’t blame them. It can take up to three or four weeks to see a doctor, and then they charge you $65 to see them and when you’ve got two or three kids in tow, that can be a lot of money.

“But some people call an ambulance for silly reasons and sometimes I do get annoyed. ‘‘I remember going lights and sirens to a guy who had cut his hand on a tile while renovating his bathroom. When I took off the towel there was a scratch about two centimetres long. His girlfriend was furious. I put a Band-Aid on it and left. ‘‘Drunks are by far the worst. It’s a futile exercise talking to them — they are either rolling on the floor, laughing or belligerent, and they put themselves in danger all the time.’’

Frankston, night shift can be long and lonely. ‘‘I miss the camaraderie of other ambulances officers when I’m on my own. ‘‘You tend to think a lot more and worry about what might happen, not what does. But I love this job. Every day there is something different, and you never stop learning.’’

Bryan Cass is nearing the end of his 47-year career as a paramedic.

A natural charmer, Mr Cass, 69, genuinely likes people, and as a paramedic who’s seen everything from tragedy to the miraculous on the job, that’s a good thing. ‘‘How lucky am I that I actually love this job? I know I get paid for it but it’s a real privilege to look after people. I get the opportunity to do something positive and make someone’s day a little better.’’

Mr Cass grew up in Colac. While working at a butter factory, he was one of two CFA members sent to learn first aid, and his interest took off from there. ‘‘Two weeks after we got married, Dawn and I packed up and headed to Melbourne for me to join the ambulance service. There was no application process. I walked in, they checked my licence, went around the corner to D24 [police headquarters] to make sure that I didn’t have a criminal record, found out I was all right and asked when I could start. That was in 1965 and

in those days, we had no training, not even CPR. We just drove the ambulance.’’

Mr Cass was based at Moorabbin, where he worked until 1972 when he completed a coronary care course and successfully applied to join one of the first MICA crews on the road. In 1981, he entered another phase of his career and became a training officer. ‘‘I saw so many good people come and go in the ’60s and ’70s because they had no one to mentor them, or train them. After a three-week introduction course you were on your own and just had to wing it. So when they decided to put a training officer in every branch, I applied. ‘‘Thirteen years ago a position became available at Sorrento and we came down here. There are the same problems here as everywhere, but being an older population it’s a little quieter. And it’s a great place to retire. I know I’ll have to one day. Just not yet.”

Mr Cass says new recruits average only five years on the job, some having started off as 21-year-old graduates. ‘‘It’s hard to have any life experience at that age and they don’t fully understand what it’s all about. But that’s true of any job. ‘‘Our job has become so high profile; expectations are pretty high and they don’t understand most of it is ordinary people with ordinary lives.

It’s not the glamour side where an arm is cut off and they save it — a lot of it is cleaning up s--t, or dealing with a urinary tract infection. Not terribly glamorous.’’

Mr Cass says he got a ‘‘buzz’’ delivering 14 babies into the world. But the flip side of life is death. ‘‘The worst thing is kids. An older couple may run off the road and be killed. It’s sad, and you feel for the family. But you can look at it that they were healthy, and died together, and in some ways that can be a nice thought, you know? But it’s tragic to die at a young age. It would drive you mad if you let it all get to you.’’

He still remembers resuscitating a 55-year-old in 1965 who became a friend of the family and valued every day he woke up. The man died recently. ‘‘Another I saved cursed every day he was alive. Any problem he had, he’d say ‘I should have died’. Eventually he took his own life. ‘‘You learn that whether it be one day, one year or 100, make the most of it.’’

Looking good on paper ornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s new exhibition, National Works on Paper, is one of the most prestigious acquisitive prize exhibitions of its type in Australia.

The display showcases recent works by innovative artists working in the field of drawing, printmaking, digital prints and paper sculpture.

The exhibition is a survey of what is ‘in vogue’ in contemporary art across Australia.

The judging panel included gallery director Jane Alexander, Australian painter and winner of the 1998 Archibald Prize Lewis Miller, and curator, writer and director of Utopia@Asialink Natalie King.

“We were bowled over with the number of entries this year — 430 entries from across the country,’’ Ms Alexander said. ‘‘It was a massive task to view all the entries and the selection process was really exciting; to see not only how they used paper but also

the subject matter, which includes contemporary concerns and subjects,” Ms Alexander said. “In the end we whittled it down to 65 works by 60 artists, representing every state and territory in Australia.”

Artists from the peninsula region include Warren Breninger and Philip Faulks.

he touring production of popular local children’s author Nicky Johnston’s book Go Away, Mr Worrythoughts! returns to Frankston this week.

Johnston initially wrote the book to help her first child, Bayley, who was struggling to eat, sleep or laugh because of anxiety.

With the assistance of Frankston Council and support from Grenda, Sign-A-Rama and the Rotary Club of Frankston, the Frankston Arts Centre developed and implemented the 40-minute theatrical adaptation which toured 48 primary schools last year. The show has a new cast and Kaarin Fairfax as director.

Embarking on a tour of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and Geelong and with other shows scheduled across the state, Go Away, Mr Worrythoughts! will be performed at the arts centre’s Cube 37 on Friday at 4 and 6pm and is suitable for 4-12 year olds. Tickets cost $6.60.

here’s a strong Mornington Peninsula flavour to the 2013 The Age Good Food Guide awards.

Of the 23 regional Victorian restaurants that scored chef’s hats, five are in our region.

TMBT maitre d’ and sommelier Clayton Hiskins has lived on the peninsula for five years. “An incredible amount of hard work has gone in here. It’s involved a lot of tweaking, being innovative and searching for different ideas,” he said.

“It’s been a work in progress and it’s taken us years to get here. We’ve been progressing at a steady rate in The Age Good Food Guide, by a half a point a year, for the past few years.

“There’s a lot of investment, from furnishings to crockery and cutlery, but primarily it’s the food and the service.

Rays celebrate too soon

Mathers would not be drawn on what the Mounties could achieve in Provincial this season but he believes remaining in the top division is a realistic goal. ‘‘We just want to be as competitive as we possibly can,’’ he said.

FRANKSTON Peninsula Heat skipper Matt Chasemore is expecting boom English recruit Matthew Lineker to make an impression on the Premier Cricket competition.

Lineker, 27, joins the Heat as an opening batsman from first class team Derbyshire, where he plays alongside talented Australian batsman Usman Khawaja.

Chasemore said he expects Lineker to provide some stability to the Heat’s young batting line-up, which has lost experienced campaigner Nick Jewell to MPCA club Sorrento. ‘‘It gives us a couple of years to teach them [the club’s young players] the right way to go about it and we’re not throwing them in the deep end,’’ he said. ‘‘Hopefully he turns out really good for us. ‘‘He’ll get here in time for our last couple of practice matches, which is what we want because — I know, having played over there [England] — it’s a hard gig to turn up and make runs.’’

Chasemore said Lineker will have a mentoring role with the club’s younger batsmen, with a handful of players set to play greater roles with the Heat this season.

The Heat star said youngsters Sam Weiss, Robbie Salerni and Ben Hillard were all ready to make strides with their games. ‘‘It was more of a boost for us to give us a first-class batsmen and give our time a bit more to these kids,’’ Chasemore said. ‘‘I’ve got three or four jobs to do this year with captaining, coaching, bowling and batting and spending that extra time with these guys is going to be difficult.’’

Lineker believes the Heat have an exciting list that he will be able to complement and, along with Chasemore, give valuable leadership. ‘‘[Frankston] are exactly what I’m looking for — a club with a young hard-working squad who are looking to further improve through hard work and practice,’’ Lineker said in a release on Frankston’s website.

Lineker was a standout performer in the Derbyshire Premier League for several years and won three consecutive player of the year awards.While still establishing himself in the first class scene, Lineker recently scored 22 and 34 against an Australia A attack that featured Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc.

He is expected to arrive in Australia in midSeptember.

Chasemore said he was excited that paceman Scott Boland and all-rounder Jon Holland had won contracts with Twenty20 club Melbourne Stars.

The Stars will be captained by Shane Warne.

Meanwhile, former Frankston Peninsula and Western Australian bowler Aaron Crawford will play with North Melbourne in the Premier Cricket competition after opting not to rejoin the Heat. Crawford sat out of all forms of cricket last year as he came to grips with a horrific run of injuries.

DANDENONG Stingrays were like the antsy home brewer who cracked the first stubby before the ale was ready.

For three quarters of Saturday’s qualifying final the Stingrays were brewing nicely against Gippsland Power and appeared headed for a preliminary final.

Young star Lachie Whitfield was showing the football public why he has long been touted the No. 1 draft pick. The midfield was dominant and they had winners up forward and down back.

That was when they cracked the first stubby — about 30 minutes early.

At the final change the Stingrays were 34 points in front; by full time they had failed to add to their score and the Power had booted 7.3 for the term to run out 11-point victors.

Stingrays coach Graham Yeats was fuming. He declined the opportunity to talk about the capitulation. Instead, assistant coach Craig Black fronted the media. ‘‘It’s obviously a disappointing result. I thought we played good footy for about three quarters and it’s pretty obvious they outworked us in the last quarter, but we’ve got another week so we’ll go back to the drawing board,’’ Black said. ‘‘Three quarters were really good, so we’ll look at the positive side of things and get back to it.’’

The Stingrays now face an elimination semifinal against Oakleigh Chargers at Visy Park, Carlton this Sunday at 1.45pm.

The Stingrays will be sweating on the fitness of Whitfield, who came off in the last quarter with a foot ailment which he was icing after the game.

Black said Nathan Wright is some chance to return from injury for the clash.

While it was a heartbreaking loss for the Stingrays, adding to their disappointing finals record, there were plenty of positives.

For the bulk of the game they were cohesive, well drilled, skilled and tackling like madmen.

The Stingrays kicked 4.5 to zip in the opening term with Billy Hartung running riot and the Power were rattled when the umpire penalised them for deliberately rushing a behind. Hartung coolly slotted his second from the free kick.

The second was pure brilliance. Whitfield got the ball in the forward pocket, his young mind ignoring the intense pressure and spotting his mate Hartung with a deft snap kick into the corridor.

The third quarter provided few highlights with the Stingrays kicking 3.6 to 1.2, and if it wasn’t for some easy misses the game would have been put beyond the gallant Power.

While it’s not certain if Yeats is a home brewer, there was certainly a bitter taste in his mouth.

Mounties bolster stocks for top flight MT Eliza has received two significant boosts ahead of the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association Provincial Shield season.

Former Mounties youngster Matt Travena is set to return to the club in September after a stint playing in England.

The Mounties have also secured the services of Bentleigh ANA batsman Adam Mikkelson, who is expected to slot into the middle order.

Coach Jason Mathers said the Mounties were excited about their first season in the top flight

competition in the MPCA for 15 years. ‘‘We’ll just do our best to compete and be competitive — it’s the first time we’ve been up for a long time,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ll be concentrating on our own game.’’

The Mounties’ only notable departure is the retirement of strike bowler Chris McDonough, who is likely to play in the lower grades.

Sharks hold on to snare spot in semis

BONBEACH has claimed its place in the semi-finals, overcoming Seaford by eight points in its MPNFL Peninsula League elimination final at Eric Bell Reserve on Saturday.

The Sharks will now face off against Karingal in the first semi-final at Eric Bell reserve on Saturday.

In what was a fierce contest right from the first bounce, Bonbeach had the early ascendancy with control of the midfield through Mark Tyrell and Paul Rebeschini.

The Sharks pushed hard in the second term and looked to be in the box seat despite the best efforts of Seaford’s young brigade Damien Lawrence and Trae Tohiariki, who were among the Tigers’ best.

Tigers coach Craig McIndoe was impressed by the youngsters.

“Our kids were pretty good all day,” McIndoe said.

Despite the dominance of the Sharks throughout most of the first half, they were unable to capitalise in front of goal.

Capp also praised the efforts of centre half-forward Shaun Foster, who was best afield, providing a strong target up front for the Sharks all day.

“His work rate was great,” Capp said.

Seaford came out firing in the third term with Aaron Walton nailing one of his four majors for the day through the handy work of teammate Brayden Irving, who finished with two goals.

Bonbeach was able to respond through forwards Shaun Foster and Dale Donkin, but Seaford continued to press, Aaron Walton getting involved in the goals again.

The Sharks took a slender five-point margin going into the final term, which was set to be a tense last quarter.

Bonbeach captain Shane McDonald drew first blood in the last term with a goal. The Sharks gun stayed composed despite the Tigers’ pressure.

Bonbeach appeared to have all the answers before late goals from Michael Kraska and Aaron Walton almost had the Tigers steal victory but just came up short, the Sharks holding on for the win.

“I thought we struggled for long periods of time,’’ McIndoe said. “We had chances in the game to go twothree goals up. You let sides off the hook and they come back and bite.”

Feisty Tigers stun Sorrento in see-sawing nail-biter DROMANA has produced a stunning two-point victory over Sorrento in its MPNFL Nepean League semi-final at Olympic Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers have now advanced straight into the grand final and will await the winner of this Saturday’s preliminary final between Sorrento and Rye or Hastings .

The Sharks were boosted by the return of forward Ben Schwarze, who has missed most of this year through injury, Sorrento coach Nick Claringbold saying he was pleased with the power forward’s return. ‘‘[Schwarze] is really important for us. ‘‘He had a pretty good day, he finished with a couple of goals.’’

The match was played at a high pace, Dromana coach Gavin Artico describing the game as a classic first versus second game. ‘‘We had control early, then they [Sorrento] took control,’’ Artico said. ‘‘It’s nice to wake up and know that we have a week off to freshen up.’’

Dromana was lively in the first term creating all the play, Dromana big man Steven Gaertner being well held up forward but finding other ways to contribute. ‘‘He was instrumental in get-

ting the ball forward and getting others involved,’’ Artico said.

Momentum shifted in the second term, the Sharks booting five majors to one, taking in a 12 point lead at the half, Leigh Treeby again impressing for the Sharks out of the midfield.

From there neither team was able to grab the clear ascendancy in the match, Jonathon Casper and Daniel Grant both pivotal in defence for Sorrento. ‘‘The third term was a real arm wrestle,’’ Claringbold said. ‘‘We missed a few opportunities, but to our boys’ credit they boxed on,’’ Troy Schwarze was a surprise recall, the playing coach not being expected to return this season after suffering a cracked cheekbone against Dromana only a few weeks ago.

The former St Kilda defender had no problem slotting back in, giving the Sharks plenty of impetus off half-back, and was able snare a goal when going forward.
