A talented actor, currently appearing on Channel Ten’s The Wrong Girl, she’s also the charismatic front-woman of electronic rock band the Rogue Traders, a mother of two, and now an entrepreneur with a successful kidswear label that counts Jessica Alba and the Kardashians among its customers.

But the thing about Nat Bass, as we like to call her, is that she is so refreshingly normal. As she reveals in this week’s interview, she – like so many working mums – craves more time with her kids, a better work-life balance and questions who she is and where she’s going.

“You get to a certain age where there’s a lot of … ‘what am I here for?’ ” NATALIE BASSINGTHWAIGHTE

W

hen Natalie Bassingthwaighte started her own label, it was beyond her wildest imagining that superstar Fergie would be among the first to sign up – or that Jessica Alba and a clutch of Kardashians would came out in support of the new kid on the clothing designers’ block.

Nat’s successful children’s clothing label, Chi Khi, is just one of the ventures of the entertainer, who recently returned to the small screen in the second series of The Wrong Girl.

The 41-year-old singer, actress and entrepreneur joins the cast as Gillian, a pastry chef and exgirlfriend of Jessica Marais’ on-screen love, played

by Logie-winning best new talent Rob Collins.

The prospect of a love triangle is exciting fans of the drama, which is based on Zoe Foster Blake’s book of the same name.

Nat first found fame on the small screen playing the home-wrecking, scheming Izzy Hoylan on the soap Neighbours from 2003–06, a role that earned her three Logie nominations.

Since then she has proven her ability as an actor, most recently playing Peter Brock’s mistress Julie Bamford in the television biopic Brock; smashed out a few best-selling albums with the Rogue Traders and as a solo artist; and has also co-written a book

and attracted more Logie nominations as a TV presenter, hosting three seasons of So You Think You Can Dance.

But it took going into the jungle in the 2017 series of I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! to find the clarity and direction she’s long been seeking.

“I didn’t say yes straight away,” Nat says of the reality show. “Actually, my initial thought was ‘no way’. It was just not something I felt I could handle.

But when do you ever get the space in your life without the phone, without your email, without being a mum, being a wife, working? Never, right?

“I know that my kids are 100 per cent my priority above everything else, but you get to a certain age when there is a lot of ‘who am I, what am I about, what am I here for?’. This felt like an interesting opportunity to figure that out, to reassess who I am.”

While it was clearly challenging to bungee jump 100 metres above a waterfall or eat a goat’s testicle and guinea pig on I’m a Celebrity … by far the hardest ordeal was being away from her husband, musician Cameron McClinchey and their children – Harper, seven and Hendrix, four – for 45 days.

Treated to a video message from her family towards the end of the filming, Nat broke down in tears. “I completely lost it because it became real

when I saw them looking what felt to me like so much older. It solidified for me that they are my world and nothing else really matters,” she says.

Nat, who stuck the distance to finish third behind winner Casey Donovan and runner-up Dane Swan, emerged thinner (having dropped 6 kilograms on the minimalist jungle diet) and stronger in her resolve.

“Like everyone I know, I want a bit more work/life balance. I want more time with my kids, more time to exercise and eat well, to do the work I really love and enjoy, and less time on the work that is just to pay the bills.”

The universe responded by sending The Wrong Girl her way. “I really wanted to be part of the show so when this role came up I was, like, ‘please, I would love that role’. I still auditioned so it wasn’t like it was handed to me on a platter,” she says.

The former X-Factor judge and mentor is hopeful it will lead to meatier roles. “I feel like I have got it in me to play some really intense dramatic roles, I just need someone to take that chance.”

Nat is still grieving the loss of a dear friend who believed wholeheartedly in her capabilities. When celebrity agent Mark Byrne died suddenly of a heart attack in September 2014, it rocked Nat’s world. She still tears up talking about him.

“I had been with him for 16 years and I didn’t know how to really do anything on my own without him. We would speak five times a day. He was kind of like my life force in decisions and career-wise.

When Mark passed it was like I didn’t know what to do, who I was or if I was good enough,” she says.

“There’s a negative little voice in my head and I think it is in every performer I know. Because you generally get more nos than you get yeses in this industry, it’s hard not to question whether you are doing the right job, in the right space or even whether you are worthy enough.”

hi Khi, the line of unisex bamboo kids’ clothes in signature monochrome hues that Nat launched in March 2015, was the answer to her self-doubt and a way to provide the family a bit of extra income in lean times.

“I wanted to see if I was capable of doing something on my own. I didn’t think I was and I have come out the other side going, ‘wow, look what I can do’.

“I feel like I am in the best place I have been for a long time emotionally, physically, and mentally motivated. Life right now is beautifully challenging but so delicious.”

Her biggest concern at the moment involves a small boy and an enormous pair of shoes.

“Hendrix – I can’t believe we named him Hendrix – has recently started air guitaring in the back of the car, which is a little bit devastating because we might have to change his name,” she says.

“I mean, you have to be as good as if not better than Jimi if you are going to be a guitarist named Hendrix.” ●

their characters, and also work with their figures to highlight their good points and play down their flaws.”

Little wonder, then, that Edith was a favourite among such screen legends as Bette Davis, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor during a Hollywood career that spanned five decades and earned her eight Oscars – more than any other woman.

Bendigo Art Gallery director Karen Quinlan says Edith’s story is an extraordinary one. “She was just so gutsy. She navigated a pathway into Hollywood that no woman had before and even faked [credentials] when she needed to.”

Karen reckons the prim, quirky Edith – with her neat bespoke suits, her sculpted helmet of black hair and shaded spectacles – would be a potent fashion force if she were around today. “She was a great influencer and developed such an individual style. She almost became a caricature of herself.”

For The Costume Designer Designer, the gallery has mustered 70 exhibits from private and public collections around the world, including the Paramount Pictures archive.

lashy Hollywood glamour was always a bit of a bore for legendary costume designer Edith Head. “She liked more of a challenge,” says Tansy Curtin, curator of The Costume Designer: Edith Head and Hollywood, an ambitious exhibition of the legend’s work coming to Bendigo Art Gallery.

In Edith’s bright mind (she had a masters degree from Stanford University) glittery breath-takers were often just too easy. They didn’t need her intellect or sartorial vision and she felt they wasted her talents.

“Not that she wouldn’t design glamour costumes when she had to,” Tansy says. “She did. But she’d much rather design everyday wear. She wanted to talk to the actors and actresses, work with them and with

on into the 1970s before her death, aged 84, in 1981. They tell the backstories; how her exquisite work could shift an actor’s confidence up a notch or add oomph to an actress’s hip swing.

Edith’s costumes for Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, for instance, added to the sadness rising like heat off the tragic Norma Desmond. “[Director Billy] Wilder wanted her to look glamorous but at the same time old fashioned, like she was stuck in her heydey,” Tansy says.

“Edith had to make her look fabulous but also not quite right.”

Edith dressed legions of Hollywood stars after conning her way into Paramount Pictures’ costume department and becoming a legend herself. “Edith’s one of those great 20th century women whose story we can tell in a meaningful way,” Karen says. ●

You won’t find any bhang – an edible form of marijuana popular in India – at its Brunswick namesake. Instead, this new, uber-hip Indian restaurant is all about modern takes on the traditional curry, and cocktails that go off with, well, a bang.

Indian cuisine is having a moment in Melbourne, with new spots popping up on both sides of the Yarra. Bhang’s take fits right into the cool inner north.

Downstairs is a cosy bar serving beer, wine and cocktails, such as the Indian Lady, made with cumin- and cinnamon-infused gin. Head past the Bollywood posters and upstairs to the dining room, where there’s exposed brick, high ceilings and a stuffed peacock sitting on the rafters.

Young, tattooed types dig into shared plates as we make our way to the leather bench seat on the back wall.

Sharing seems to be the thing here, so we get into crispy samosas, soft-shell crab bhaji (fritters), tandoori chicken from the charcoal oven and a generous helping of naan. If you need a break from the heat, there are plenty of raitas and chutneys, including cucumber and mint, to cool the palate.

We finish off with gulab jamun with rosewater syrup and cardamom ice-cream, and float away on a high. ●

Nick Devereux, who co-owns cafes Good Egg and Wall Two 80, says the show had a big impact on the way consumers, including many of his customers, think about what happens to our waste.

“War on Waste exposed some truths for the general public and consumers,” he says. “A few days after it aired, I noticed a jump from 15 to more than 75 customers using KeepCups at Wall Two 80 between 6.30am and 10.30am. It’s been growing ever since.”

here are some gifts you can’t put a value on, no matter how much they cost. Just ask Melinda Ovens, who moderates the Give Away Free Stuff in Melbourne Facebook page.

Melinda helps oversee the burgeoning community of more than 51,000 members from across Melbourne. They’re part of what’s being dubbed the “gift economy”, where generous and environmentally conscious people give away furniture, household items, clothing or food to those who want it, rather than throwing it away to add to ever-growing mountains of landfill.

Melinda says the Facebook group has spawned scores of heartwarming stories since it started in 2010, but one of her favourites involved a couple who were new to Australia and expecting their first baby. “They had very little, and she’d been sitting on the floor. Then they claimed a pair of lounge chairs and were so happy just to have something comfy.”

Such is the altruism on the Facebook page that one could literally fill their home with furniture – or their pantry with Arnott’s Shapes.

One Abbotsford man offered 22 boxes of pizzaflavoured Shapes. He had bought 60 boxes after hearing that Arnotts was about to change the recipe

for his favourite snack, but then discovered there is, in fact, such a thing as having too many Shapes.

Unsurprisingly, the post went viral.

Face-to-face giving opportunities are also becoming increasingly popular – thanks to initiatives such as the Really Really Free Market Preston, which started in April.

One of the market’s organisers, Suse Scholem, says her passion for the free economy has inspired her involvement in a host of local groups, including Streetbank and Kensington Good Karma Network.

“People aren’t satisfied with the consumerist way of life, they want to share things that are good and of value but that they no longer need,” she says.

Suse and 10 other like-minded people united to set up the market (based on an idea that started in New Zealand in the 1990s), where people can go to learn and share new skills as well as give and receive free goods. “Bowen therapy (massage) is

ongoing and we have yoga classes, edible weed walks, haircuts, clothing repair and jewellery repairs,” she says. “There are also upcycling workshops and food-waste workshops, and you can learn about dumpster diving.”

The market has recently been, well, gifted free use of a local scout hall to set up shop on the last Sunday of each month. “The only thing we ask of those who have a market stall is that they take back what they haven’t been able to give away,” Suse says.

Melinda says Give Away Free Stuff in Melbourne also has rules about gifting etiquette, asking that people not take free stuff to make money from it.

“We try to keep it fairly open, but ask for people to disclose faults, if food is out of date, that type of thing. With electrical items, we recommend getting everything checked by an electrician,” she says.

“While someone might not want a grotty mattress to sleep on, they might use the springs to grow beans, and that keeps it out of landfill, which is a win-win.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

How would you describe the play Hay Fever?

It’s hard, because there’s not much of a plot. It’s all in the language and the subtext, but it’s funny and very physical. It’s about a really interesting, artistic, bohemian family, who don’t seem to have any regard for visitors who come to their country house.

You play Clara. What can you tell us about her?

It’s a great role, because it’s small but funny. I get all of act two off. That’s my dream role! Clara is the maid to Judith Bliss, played by Marina Prior, a retired actress who is terribly dramatic.

You started in comedy. Did that impede being taken seriously as an actor?

I think I did get pigeonholed. But it wasn’t until later in life that I thought that I could tackle dramatic roles, so maybe I put that restriction on myself somehow.

o Stanley can’t remember a time when she didn’t love watching footy. One of her most prized possessions is an ageing poster commemorating Collingwood’s win in the 1990 grand final. f “I bought it in the car park after we won against Essendon. I remember it was a freezing cold day and my friend and I got general admission tickets. We had to sit on stairs next to a private booth where we could see the rich people eating their meals,” she recalls.

“When Collingwood won, I don’t think anyone could quite believe it. I had that poster on my bedroom wall for years and now it hangs in my study.”

It was in her study last summer that Jo began writing Play like a Girl. The series of books follows a group of 11 and 12-year-old

girls who play for The Flyers, a footy team in a fictitious inner-city suburb. The one thing the girls all have in common is that they love their team and playing footy.

Each of the six books is written from the perspective of a different girl and explores the career possibilities for girls in the sport today, thanks to the introduction of the AFL Women’s League. But the stories also explore issues common to young girls such as friendship, belonging, body image, bullying, anxiety, success and failure.

Jo says when she was approached to write the series, it was a childhood dream come true. “I have a clear memory as a little girl of writing endless books. I was in grade 3 or 4 when I started writing, and they were always mysteries because I was obsessed with Trixie Belden. I’d staple pages together

Jo took Willow to the first AFLW game this year, when Collingwood and Carlton met at Princes Park. “I explained to her that until then women weren’t allowed to play football at that level and it wasn’t long ago that girls were told to stop playing footy at 14. Thankfully that’s an abstract concept for her. She hasn’t yet been hit with that kind of inequality; let’s hope she never is.”

Why HIIT works

H

IIT, or high intensity interval training, is the buzzword on everyone’s lips right now.

It’s also the training philosophy I use in my 28 program and what I believe to be the most effective and efficient way to exercise. Like the name suggests, HIIT is intense and, in my experience, it works.

WHAT HAT IS IT?

HIIT involves alternating between short bursts of high-intensity exercise and low-intensity recovery periods. You might work for 45 seconds and then spend 15 seconds recovering.

These short bursts of work and rest are great for cardio conditioning and even better for torching calories. The reason HIIT is so effective is because it leads to excess post-oxygen consumption (EPOC).

EPOC elevates your resting metabolic rate (the calories you burn just going about your day-to-day life) for 24 hours or more once you’ve finished your training session. In other words, it turns your body into a fat-burning machine.

IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

Before you jump on board the HIIT train, it’s important to consider whether it’s right for you.

What is high intensity for one person might not be high intensity for you, and vice versa.

High intensity generally means working at an 80-90 per cent effort rate. If you want to achieve results doing HIIT, you need to be working at 80 or 90 per cent of your total capacity. This is a relative rating so if you’re just starting out, you won’t need to push yourself too hard to reach 90 per cent.

it all began. So here I am in Agonda – a sleepy fishing village in South Goa, nestled between the beach and the jungle.

I arrived late at night, slightly spooked by my taxi driver’s comment that he sometimes sees tigers in this part of the world, and crawled, exhausted, into my giant bed. I’ve opted for a private room with airconditioning. If I’m going to do something this hardcore, I’m going to need a little luxury.

My fellow students have travelled from all over the world – a United Nations of yoga freaks. We’re a colourful bunch: musicians who can’t make it to class on time, extreme vegans, recovering addicts, mothers, travellers, type-A high achievers, those who have quit their jobs and sold everything to follow a different path. Ages range from 19 to 60 and only two in the group are men.

Over the next 24 days we will become like a family – a big, flexible, vegetarian clan. We’ll see each other at our best and worst, and we won’t all make it to the end.

Each day starts at 6.30am sharp (latecomers have to make up the class at lunchtime) with a two-hour Ashtanga yoga class. The rest of the day is filled with classes on everything from re-incarnation to why the psoas muscle is important, to breathing like

a yogi. We finish at 6 or 7pm, our mostly Western hips aching from hours of sitting on the floor.

ach mealtime, there’s a feast of delicious vegetarian food. Sometimes, we head into town to our favourite joint, Zest, a Melbourne-style vegan cafe that serves chia puddings and smoothie bowls or Blue Planet, a family run place that makes a mean papaya salad. Or we flock to the beachfront cafes, which let us use their sun lounges for free.

Agonda Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in Asia, and although the water doesn’t feel

much cooler than the 35-degree air temperature, we never pass up an opportunity for a lunchtime swim.

Sure, there are tears during the course, as we battle with the long days and the unfamiliar routine, but there’s also plenty of laughter. One day, instead of our usual meditation, Sudhir decides we’ll spend an hour freestyle dancing to Indian party music.

I don’t see any tigers, but once, while in downward-facing dog pose, I spy a snake slithering across the roof of the hut next door. Monkeys watch while we practise, probably wondering what the hell we’re doing and there are giant ants we can’t kill due to the yogic principle of Ahimsa (non-violence).

Finally, after 200 hours of classes and some nerve-wracking exams, we finish as we began: with a fire ceremony. I joined Kingswood College in year 9. My younger brother was here and we live on the same street as this school, so I’ve always felt a connection. I moved here because of the breadth of subjects – my favourite subjects are legal studies, French and business management.

Year 12 is a big year and I’ve always placed high expectations on myself. Sometimes that causes stress but Ms Tyndall has helped me believe in myself. She taught me humanities in year 9 but last year and this year she’s taught me business management. She’s passionate and knowledgeable and she brings things into a real-world context that makes it interesting.

At the start of this year, I had a timetable clash with legal studies and business and I wanted to do well in both. Ms Tyndall worked out a way for me to continue both subjects by teaching me business outside of the school timetable. We meet a couple of times a week one-on-one in school and we also email and Skype regularly. She’s always open to questions and I have so many questions …

We have great conversations that lead so many places. Ms Tyndall makes me think further and look at different perspectives and that adds another layer to my learning. And she’s taught me that there comes a point when I’ve done as much preparation and work as I can and it’s time to stop and relax and know that I’ve done enough. ●

I have a Sri Lankan background and, while teaching is revered in Eastern culture, my dad thought it might not be the same in Australia. So I studied arts/business management at Monash and specialised in HR and organisational psychology.

Then I joined the corporate world.

Deep down, I still wanted to teach, so eventually I did my grad dip and never looked back. During my first teaching round, I knew I’d had an impact on children in the class and it was an “aha” moment.

I’ve taught middle school, senior school and while I like a strategic role, I love the classroom.

her, she was quiet, industrious and determined.

When her business and legal studies clashed, we were both a bit anxious about this new model of studying because it hadn’t been tried before but Bec’s results are proof it’s worked. She always comes to the table with her work done so we have good conversations.

Bec reminds me of myself at 18. She wants to do well and we both love lists and our diary, with different highlighters and meticulous notes. She’s inquisitive and a critical thinker, so a legal career would suit her. She’ll get where she wants to go because the determination and drive are there. ●

hat if the thing in your garage appreciated in value faster than your entire house? It happens more than you think.

While the value of most cars drops like a stone the moment they leave the dealership, the “bluechips” of the automotive world have turned out to be some of the finest investments of the century.

Remember the McLaren F1? You might have seen pictures of Rowan Atkinson cruising around in his before he famously crashed it, twice.

If you’d bought a new one 22 years ago, and hung onto it, you’d have made 77 per cent per year on your investment. That’s three and a half times more than a house in Sydney over the same period.

Classic cars have gained 404 per cent in value over the past 10 years, according to the latest Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, which means they’ve strongly outperformed gold, stocks and, yes, even houses in Sydney and Melbourne.

Premium luxury sports cars are now seen as the exception to the broad motor-industry rule that a car starts losing money the moment it’s driven out of the dealership. The likes of special edition Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin supercars are seen to have a surprisingly stable rate of return.

The global low-interest-rate environment after the financial crisis has helped funnel investors into these sorts of “non-traditional” investments. But as world markets finally start finding their footing, these “alternative” markets could find themselves heading into correction, according to CMC Markets chief analyst Michael McCarthy.

Still Shaun Baker, general manager of Melbourne’s Dutton Garage, says a handful of cars remain as close to a safe investment as exists. “We call some of our cars the ‘blue-chips’. We’re the only dealership to have LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Bugatti Veyron … if you had to call a sure bet, they’re a sure bet in terms of investment.” ●

Starting with unisex watches and extending to sunglasses, bags and journals, The 5TH has attracted the attention of no less a prestige publication than Forbes magazine for its “genius” business model, which limits sales to five days a month.

It’s a success story that really did begin at home – specifically, in the same awardwinning Prahran apartment complex where Alex has lived since he was 10.

“My parents are architects (Rob McBride and Debbie Ryan of McBride Charles Ryan) and built this place in 2000. They came together with 10 friends to bid on the site and develop it,” the 27-year-old says.

“I started my business as a design blog to hopefully attract people to do group developments because I loved this idea so much. It has definitely influenced my approach to business.”

Phil says that a housing crash has to play out, but it won’t be when you think. The 18 year cycle predicts the precise year the housing market downturn is likely to hit.

Phil’s projection for the current cycle is that it will continue growing from 2012 to 2019, with a short mid-cycle slowdown and then, the second phase of the 18 year cycle will kick in from 2021 to 2026. Phil states that this is the phase of the cycle when speculation will really take off.

While so much infrastructure is being built and so much technological innovation is happening, it’s not unreasonable to believe that house prices around the world, including Australia, will keep going up in price.
