Former UN peacekeeping commander Major General Patrick Cammaert has said, “It is now more dangerous to be a woman than a soldier in modern conflicts” and many more institutions are admitting their lack of action in identifying and dealing with sexual violence.

At an ecumenical gathering in London recently, representatives of several faiths acknowledged their silence on the issue and their role in stigmatising survivors. When the church, no matter the kind of church, starts talking about the “weapon of rape” you know a new kind of momentum has been achieved.

As I write this, Sydney man David Marlin has been jailed for nine years for a vicious assault on a train of a mentally ill young woman, whom he punched into submission before sexually assaulting. There will always be sexual predators and there will always be the thugs and the cowards who deliberately select the vulnerable to be their next victims.

Nothing changes there, I fear. But what I think has changed is the spirit of the community in which they try to commit their crimes: it’s not just another act of violence any more, it’s specific and it’s gendered and we are not remaining silent about it anymore. \

where there’s a new ward, there’s a way Box Hill

Eastern Health has opened a new ward at Box Hill Hospital to alleviate mounting pressure on its emergency and acute-care departments.

Ward 9.1 will help the hospital provide continuing care for the increased number of patients who have come to emergency departments and been admitted to acute-care wards since the new 10-storey Box Hill Hospital Building A opened last September.

Eastern Health figures show there has been a 15 per cent increase in emergency department presentations and a 5 per cent increase in emergency admissions since Building A opened.

Continuing care director Damian Gibney said such a jump was normal when a new hospital facility opened. However, it had caused congestion in short-stay wards.

“We had patients that were unable to be moved into continuing care,” Mr Gibney said.

“Consequently, patients were waiting in the emergency department too long.

“It was clear that we could make improvements in the emergency and elective surgery departments’ capacity, and our waiting lists, if we could just free up beds in those by installing this new continuing care ward.”

The new Ward 9.1 is on level nine of Building A, on Arnold Street. It will have 32 continuing care beds for geriatric, palliative care and rehabilitation patients and people with hospital discharge complications. It is the first time Box Hill Hospital has had continuing care beds.

Ward 9.1 brings Eastern Health’s total number of continuing care beds – across its seven hospitals – to 252.

The new ward’s nursing unit manager, Susan Power, said patients who did not stay in the acute-care department previously had to go to another Eastern Health hospital.

“We will fill the ward to capacity over the space of a week,” she said.

“It is not a good idea to fill a ward to capacity just on day one.

“You need to stagger the process for the safety of the patients.”

Nursing and hospital staff began shifting patients from Box Hill’s acute-care department to the new ward early last week.

Last Monday, 94-year-old Lucia Easton cut the red ribbon to officially open the ward.

“It was a bit of a big and elaborate entrance I made, wasn’t it,” she said, laughing.

Quick fix to bridge gap After installing “folded” signs along Warrandyte bridge, VicRoads has insisted it is still investigating ways to stem congestion and improve traffic flow in a bushfire emergency.

Last month, VicRoads said it had installed folded traffic management signs on the roadsides at Warrandyte bridge to help traffic move faster in the event of an emergency, such as a bushfire.

“The signs will only be used to assist with traffic management during an emergency, to direct drivers to which lanes to use and which way to turn,” VicRoads metro north-west regional director Adam Maguire said.

Installation of the signs followed a multi-agency review of how the bridge would operate during an emergency.

“VicRoads is working with Nillumbik Shire Council to determine future improvements along the Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Road corridor to address congestion,” Mr Maguire said.

The road authority’s quick-fix comes after months of campaigning by Warrandyte residents for a permanent solution to their concerns about traffic congestion on the bridge, particularly during a bushfire.

Warrandyte MP Ryan Smith has also

promised a full VicRoads investigation into expanding the river crossing.

However he said the new signs were the result of measures initiated by the previous Napthine government and there had been no further work on investigating a second river crossing.

“I intend to continue to pursue the matter, because any work that has been started needs to progress,” Mr Smith said, adding that Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley had committed to conducting another investigation into improving the river crossing.

Manningham mayor Paul McLeish, while welcoming VicRoads’ efforts, said the signs did not resolve weekday traffic congestion issues or the question of whether additional infrastructure was required to better control traffic in an emergency.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the state government would work with the Warrandyte community to ensure its traffic needs were met.

“I note that the member for Warrandyte was a cabinet minister in the previous Coalition government and did nothing to address the concerns of the residents of Warrandyte,” Mr Donnellan said. \ EDDIE MORTON

tafes confident, despite qualifications review Local TAFE providers are confident the vocational education and training (VET) sector’s reputation will remain intact, provided dodgy operators are weeded out.

Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert last month announced a review of Victoria’s VET system aimed at snuffing out substandard qualifications and registered training operators (RTOs), and eliminating fee-loan scheme abuse.

“By weeding out low-quality training, we will better protect students and restore confidence in those who are doing the right thing,” Mr Herbert said.

He said 2500 substandard qualifications had been quashed because of poor quality training. Another 3000 were being investigated. A report on the issue is due next month.

The Consumer Action Law Centre says the number of private RTOs offering government-subsidised courses in

Victoria has doubled since 2009. State government funding for VET programs increased from $137 million in 2008 to more than $799 million in 2013.

Box Hill TAFE chief executive Norman Gray said it was common to get enrolment applications from students who had previously trained at private RTOs and were unhappy with their qualifications and job opportunities.

“This isn’t about eliminating competition, it’s about ensuring students receive what they pay for and can trust in the education system to deliver to an even standard,” he said.

The scandal has hit the private education industry hard.

Australian Council for Private Education and Training chief executive Rod Camm urged the public not to “paint the entire industry with one brush”.

He said the council would introduce a code of practice aimed at ridding the sector of inappropriate behaviour. \ EM

Police are investigating the suspicious discovery of 12 dead kangaroos at Warrandyte last month.

Sergeant Stewart Henderson said three joeys, two kangaroos and an arrow were found in dumpsters at a Warrandyte carwash near Goldfields Shopping Centre about 2pm on February 24.

It followed the discovery of six kangaroos in the same dumpsters the previous week.

Another kangaroo was found decapitated in Wonga Park on February 26.

Sergeant Henderson said police believed the animals were shot for sport.

“We do know there are some landowners who don’t like kangaroos and take it upon themselves to have their own private cull,” he said. Sergeant Henderson said police were concerned that people such as bushwalkers could be injured in the crossfire.

Another live kangaroo was recently found with an arrow in its head at Templestowe’s Westerfolds Park. Police were investigating whether the incidents were linked.

To mark the occasion, we asked you, our readers, to tell us which Australian women most inspire you. We received an overwhelming response from almost 1000 readers, nominating fabulous females in the fields of entertainment, sport, science, politics and community, as well as the everyday heroines who enrich our lives. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

“Julie Bishop always looks and acts like a lady while holding herself in a man’s world,” wrote Julie Armstrong of Vermont South, in nominating Australia’s Foreign Minister as one of our most inspiring women.

“So brave, focussed and determined … her goals and actions WILL make a difference to protect women and children,” wrote reader Sann Watts of Bonogin, Queensland, just one of the scores of readers who nominated Rosie Batty as one of our most inspiring women.

You may not agree with her politics, but it’s hard to criticise Julie Bishop’s performance as Australia’s first female Foreign Minister. Since stepping into the role in September 2013, Bishop has carried out her duties with unflinching professionalism, grit and style.

Bishop entered politics after a successful career in law where her final role was managing partner of Clayton Utz in Perth. She attended Harvard Business School and sat on the board of the Western Australian Museum Foundation and the West Coast Eagles Football Club.

Elected to the seat of Curtin in WA in 1998, she was appointed Minister for Education, Science and Training in 2006 and elected deputy leader of the Liberals after the 2007 election loss to Labor.

“I was brought up to believe that entering public office should be one of the highest callings,” says Bishop, “and that being able to direct your energies and abilities to the betterment of your state or your country is one of the greatest contributions of all.” \

Batty stamped her authority on our collective consciousness when, on February 13, 2014, less than 24 hours after her only child Luke was attacked and killed by his father on a small-town cricket ground, she appeared at her front gate and addressed the media with an impassioned, articulate wake-up call on family violence.

With extraordinary dignity and composure she declared: “I want to tell everybody that family violence happens to everybody – no matter how nice your house is, how intelligent you are. It can happen to anyone, and everyone.” People watched in awe.

It was our first inspiring glimpse of a woman who would become a beacon for change, a tireless and impressive campaigner shining the spotlight on family violence.

Within weeks she launched the Luke Batty Foundation to help women and children affected by family violence. She went on to became a powerful catalyst for Victoria’s just-launched Royal Commission into family violence and, in January, was named Australian of the Year.

As the maelstrom of public attention has swirled around her, she has remained calm,

“Some people may be critical and thinking, ‘Who is this woman and what are her motives?’, Batty said when contacted about her nomination as one of our most inspiring women. “But I had no idea what would evolve, and my motive right from the beginning was to raise awareness. I don’t want anyone else to lose a child through family violence.

“People who have known me all my life know this is how I’ve always been. I’ve always been outspoken when I am passionate about something, and I’ve always stood up for what I feel is right.”

But she admits her life now is nothing like she imagined it would be. “It has been too hard to look ahead because my plans involved Luke.

“I had Luke when I was 40, so a lot of my friends were doing treks and adventure type stuff and I was doing the Gold Coast theme parks with Luke! And happily so!” she smiles.

“Now I will think about revisiting some of my ambitions – my bucket list. I want to go to Africa and I’m going trekking with the World Wildlife Fund in India next year.

This year I want to make the Luke Batty Foundation work.

“Most people who get to my age – and sadly I’ve just turned 53 – have had trials and tribulations. We’ve all had heartache and loss.

GILLARD As the driving force behind some of Melbourne’s most-loved restaurants and the author of some of the country’s best-selling cookbooks, Stephanie Alexander is a towering figure in Australia’s food scene. But it is her role as the visionary founder of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation that has elevated the former librarian to true inspirational status.

The foundation began in 2001 at Collingwood College to teach inner-city children how to grow and cook healthy food. By the end of 2015, 10 per cent of Australian primary schools are expected to run the program.

“I didn’t come from a well-off family,” says Alexander, “but my family cared about the food we ate and about the time we spent together around the table. It was central to our life and made me the foodie I am.

“At the time I thought about the program, the whole issue of poor eating choices for children was being discussed. It was assumed then that you could wag your finger at kids and simply say, ‘This and that is bad for you’.

But I thought the most likely way to change behaviour was to create something for kids to do that was enjoyable and involved eating lovely food.” \

“I wish I could be a little less bogan & a little more Ita” PROFESSOR SHARON LEWIN When lord mayor Robert Doyle and much-loved philanthropist Jeanne Pratt were asked to nominate the woman they find most inspiring, both came up with one name: Professor Sharon Lewin.

Lewin may not have the headline-grabbing profile of many of the others on our list, but she has had a profound affect on thousands of people through her ground-breaking work on HIV and AIDS. As Pratt said, she is “brilliant, passionate, inspirational”.

Named 2014 Melburnian of the Year, Lewin began working in the HIV field in the mid-1980s. Her epiphany came during a visit to New York where she was struck by the huge toll the disease was taking on the city’s gay community.

“That was a transformational time in my career. I worked at an institute led by David Ho, who discovered the new treatments we now have for HIV, and who went on to become Time’ Time’s Man of the Year in 1996,” Lewin says.

In 2014, Lewin co-chaired the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne and is now the inaugural director of the Doherty Institute – a leading centre for infectious diseases and immunity research.

And who does Lewin find inspiring? She names Nobel Prize winner and International AIDS Society president, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. “She discovered HIV in 1983 when she was working in a tough and competitive environment as a female scientist in France. She is amazingly competent, gracious and modest and continues to fight for women in science,” says Lewin.

“I’m inspired and impressed by women who do amazing things with a certain style, with modesty and with inclusiveness.” \

In September 2011, Pitt suffered life-threatening burns while running an ultra-marathon event in the Kimberley region of WA. Bushfires swept through the area and Pitt sustained burns to 64 per cent of her body.

She not only survived the ordeal but thrived, emerging as an inspirational figure who embodies resilience, courage and selflessness.

She has trekked along the Great Wall of China to raise funds for fellow burns victims, visited schools to speak about body image and appeared on the front cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly Weekly. This year Pitt, a mining engineer, will tackle the Inca Trail in Peru to raise money for Interplast, a charity providing free surgical treatment in developing countries.

“We should all be making the most out of whatever circumstances we have been dealt in life,” Pitt says.

“We only have one life to live, after all. You can sit around and feel sorry for yourself or you can get on with it. I just choose to get on with it.”

Little wonder Pitt drew a swag of nominations from our readers, including Jo D’Cruz of East Brighton who summed it up perfectly: “Here was a woman who had the courage to fight for her life, despite it being a very different life to the one she had envisaged … she is beautiful inside and out”.

As a family court judge for 18 years, an AFL commissioner and president of the Melbourne Festival, Linda Dessau had an inspiring career even before she was appointed Victoria’s 29th Governor last month, the first woman appointed to the role.

Recognised nationally for her efforts to reduce family violence and child abuse, it is Dessau’s work with communities that has underpinned her professional life.

“It’s the community role that resonates with me,” says Dessau.

“Particularly having spent all that time with people really at the coal face of the sorts of issues and problems that our community faces.”

Dessau says her own happy childhood in Brighton contributed to her success.

“I had a pretty fortunate childhood in every sense, but most particularly in the sense of a very happy and very nurturing family – always being told I could do anything and having a sense, too, that it was important to put back into the community,” she says.

Now, as she gets ready to move into Government House as Victoria’s first female governor, Dessau refuses to feel overwhelmed by the expectations on her shoulders.

“It is a privilege to be able to choose areas and organisations to which I want to devote my time. I appreciate how lucky I am,” she says. \

She is a gorgeous, well-mannered woman who has a grace and beauty about her,” wrote Jodie Staropoulos of Sydenham Deborra-Lee Furness is an accomplished actress but it is her efforts to overhaul outdated international adoption laws that has drawn admiration from so many of our readers.

Furness and her husband, Hugh Jackman, have two adopted children, Oscar and Ava, and Furness is executive director of the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. She was instrumental in establishing National Adoption Awareness Week in Australia.

She says it was her young son who prompted her to make a difference after one day filling his homemade wooden wagon with bottles of water.

“I asked where he was going and he said, ‘I’m going to Africa, because the kids there have no clean water’. If a little boy can be so moved to do something, I really needed to get off the couch,” she says.

Furness has lobbied political heavyweights to make international adoption more efficient and supports Australian families facing obstacles to adoption.

When we put out the call to readers to tell us which woman most inspires them, we were overwhelmed by the response, receiving close to 1000 entries nominating fabulous females in all walks of life. Some were funny, many were moving and heartfelt, but it was an entry from Maria Delgado of Essendon, nominating her mother Youla, that really captured our attention.

She wrote: “My 84-year-old mother is the most inspiring woman in my life. Migrating to Australia in 1969, holding two suitcases, a nine-year-old and me, a six-month-old baby. Without any English, she worked in a factory six days a week.

We had no relatives in Australia. Having heard that my mother sacrificed her education to work and support us inspired me to do better, to study hard at school, attend university and complete my degree. Having come from humble beginnings, her support, determination and hard work made us who we are today – proud Australians.”

To make the national team in one sport is impressive but playing for your country in two sports has to be classed as inspirational.

Ellyse Perry was just 16 when, in 2007, she earned a place on both the Australian women’s cricket team, and the Matildas women’s soccer team.

She was the youngest player ever selected to represent Australia in cricket. Almost eight years later she continues to play the two sports at a national level.

Perry is a key part of Sydney FC and has played in the Women’s Cricket World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She also studies economics and social sciences.

“Playing sport is a passion for me and for that to have an effect on other women, it’s unexpected but lovely,” says Perry, when told about her nomination as one of our most inspirational women.

“Representing my country in two sports that I love has been the biggest highlight of all. There are always challenges, of course, but I think, in sport, challenges just make you a better athlete.”

When asked about her own inspiration, Perry cites her parents, especially her mum, Kathy, who is a GP. “She and Dad have always encouraged me and been willing to give me the opportunity to experience everything I wanted to. I think Mum did way more than she had to as a parent to make sure she provided the best for my brother and I, while having her own professional career,” says Perry.

“But I think there are a lot of women doing extraordinary things in everyday life.” \

“An ordinary working-class girl who did the extraordinary by becoming Australia’s first female prime minister; she’s a great role model for young females,� wrote A. Sullivan from Caringbah, NSW, one of the many readers who nominated Gillard.

In June 2010, Julia Eileen Gillard became Australia’s first female Prime Minister. Love or loathe her politics, the former deputy prime minister, federal member for Lalor and lawyer earned her place in the history books.

In June 2013, Gillard resigned from politics after losing a leadership ballot to Kevin Rudd but she is proud of her achievements. “What I am absolutely confident of is it will be easier for the next woman and the woman after that and the woman after that, and I’m proud of that,� she says.

When Gillard recently toured the country, promoting her memoirs, My Story, she drew huge crowds of supporters. She touchingly dedicated the book to her late father, John Gillard, who she says was her inspiration. “His love of learning was inspiring, his belief in me was sustaining,� says Gillard.

Resilience has also inspired Gillard, helping her tough out life’s challenges – personal and professional, such as the moment when she realised her political career was over.

New home, without the move

“At the heart of the answer is resilience – a modern buzzword, yet a term that came to encapsulate so much about my life,� she says. \

The founding editor of CLEO magazine took over the reins of the country’s most widely read title, The Australian Women’s Weekly, and then became the first woman Weekly to edit a major Australian metropolitan newspaper when she became editor in chief of Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph. “Other highlights for me are when I chaired the national advisory committee on AIDS and learned very quickly what the HIV virus was all about,� she says. “When I started working at the age of 15, I had no idea all this awaited me.�

Ita’s Aunt Billy was an inspirational figure because she “always had time to listen�. “She’d never been to Paris and I told her she couldn’t leave this world without seeing Paris.

So I took her overseas when she was 75,� says Buttrose, laughing.

Now Buttrose is an advocate for the well-being of older Australians in her roles

with Alzheimer’s Australia and Arthritis Australia. “I wouldn’t do anything differently. You’re the person you are today because of all the things that you did in the past,� she says firmly. “You can learn from some of those things but you can’t undo it. Onward. Always look forward. Never look back.� \

have often wondered why we need International Women’s Day, especially in a western culture where we have equal rights, we’re not a minority, and the socialists, suffragettes and fabulous feminists fought the battle and won it on our behalf long, long ago.

Surely, if International Women’s Day no longer exists for us to highlight our secondary status but to celebrate our achievements, shouldn’t we be assuming no one else needs to be told how clever we are as well? Of course women are equal. Everyone knows this, right?

But then I woke up from that lovely dream and read the papers.

And I remembered what it was like growing up in a surfing town and, later, living in a Catholic college that consisted of mostly boys, pretend-men from farms and country towns, many of whom (not all of course) had been programmed into the master/slave way of being. I wonder what they all think now that they have daughters. What do they tell them about their rights?

Does their own conscience allow them to warn their teenage girls about boys, and what some might be capable of?

That Rosie Batty is Australian of the Year says it all. And we only need to look at situations across the world – in Syria, India, Nigeria – to realise why an international day set aside to reflect on and respect women might still be necessary.

So, if I’m to celebrate anything at all about International Women’s Day, or single out one woman or group in particular, it’s not likely to be the big-ticket achievers. Of course women are capable of running banks and countries and long distances.

It’s not likely to be the Rosie Battys either, which would just be a reminder that while some women have achieved great things and do run banks and countries and long distances, many, many others still live under threat.

I’ve recently spent a lot of time in and out of hospital visiting my sick mum and, I have to say, it’s the nurses we should all be applauding right now. Anyone who can cajole my mum into doing something she doesn’t

want to do has got to get some sort of international recognition. Go nurses.

And so on this, the eve of International Women’s Day, I’m saying hooray to those who still persist at this time-honoured profession. Yes, it’s a traditional, perhaps even conservative, and some might say unimaginative career choice for women.

In fact, I remember a time when nursing was widely discouraged. Why be a nurse when you can be a doctor, they said, but that’s not so relevant today because lots of women are doctors (and lots of men are nurses, although they’re not winning the race by a long shot – they still represent about 10 per cent of the nursing population).

And I do sense a subtle shift in the young of today, who see nursing with fresh eyes, as an altruistic, vitally important and rewarding career (that can also involve travel).

They seem happy to do it, too, are naturally kind and empathetic, and even manage to smile as they help old people, i.e. certain relatives of mine, with their bedpans and myriad complaints about not ordering the food they clearly did order because it’s on the sheet right in front of them and in their handwriting.

That’s why I’m going for the nurses, on International Women’s Day, the everyday lovelies who turn up for long shifts on their feet, eager and willing to fix what is wrong. I wish everyone was more like them. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au WE WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK @

idan Raftery is a man after my own heart. In an interview about Persillade, his East Melbourne enoteca/cave à manger/wine-bar-with-food, he said he opened it because he was sick of being “gouged” by wine prices in restaurants.

So he and wife Tanya created a place that’s part posh bottle shop and part bistronomy-wannabe, with a wine list where many bottle prices begin with a three or four.

I can’t remember the last time I saw such sensibly priced wine in a suave restaurant. Even better, you can choose your own bottle from the racks and drink it at your table for $10 corkage. Wine lovers rejoice.

There are plenty of civilised, hospitable touches like this at Persillade, from the deep green splendour of the ribbed leather banquette – “It’s like being in a gorgeous Jaguar,” coos my date – to the recycled chic of the interiors. Walls are clad in a bricolage of painted, peeling and raw timber planks; old green wine bottles are reborn as lightshades and water glasses.

Tiny vases on each table sport sprigs of parsley, because Persillade is a French cooking term for chopped parsley and garlic (I had to look that up of course). The quirky details and open kitchen help draw attention away from the car showroom-style windows over Victoria Parade, and the sometimes too-bright lighting within.

The drawback with cheaper wine, I discover, is that you can afford to drink more. And you’ll want to when you see the fascinating list.

he link between music and fashion inspired a young Melbourne designer to steer her sartorial song towards a postpunk aesthetic. It was Malcolm McLaren’s Buffalo Gals video clip in 1982 (and Vivienne Westwood’s Buffalo Girls collection released the same year) that prompted Sara Thorn and her then partner Bruce Slorach to adopt cow print in their garments.

In 1983, that cow print dress was modelled by designer Alannah Hill, who strutted the couple’s Galaxy label wares down the catwalk. It was a vibrant time in Melbourne’s fashion, music and art scene, a period when neo pop prints ruled, club wear swerved on the bright side of life, and emerging fashion designers fed off the city’s independent and artistic culture.

Thorn and Slorach ran a host of labels including Sara Thorn, Abyss Studio (made famous by Cyndi Lauper when she chose to stock it at Screaming Mimi’s, where she worked in New York), Galaxy Emporium and Funkessentials from 1983. They also had a storefront on Chapel Street called Galaxy Emporium that opened in the mid-80s, where many of these brands were stocked.

“Galaxy ran over a period of 12 years,” says Thorn.

“It was a vibrant time in Melbourne. We originally started from a warehouse in Flinders Street. You could say I’m old-school. I have seen the rise and fall of Melbourne’s artistic precincts.’’

But when Thorn, who is Melbourne-born and raised

by a Spanish mother and English father, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, her world crumbled.

“For me breast cancer was linked to having too much stress in my life and being around toxic people,” says Thorn, who also taught fashion at UTS in Sydney and RMIT in Melbourne. “I withdrew from work in order to focus on my health and going back to nature. I looked at myself as a piece of art that I needed to restore.’’

Now she has discovered a way to return to the halcyon Galaxy days without reliving them.

“When I was ready I started making clothes again and I looked at my past for inspiration,” she says.

“My diagnosis helped me look back at periods of my life with fondness that I had previously discarded and that’s how I started to include a lot of those Galaxy pieces in my new collection.’’

Thorn collaborates with her son, performer Oscar Key Sung, and his friends to steer her new fashion voice.

She also lends her artistic self to making homewares, scarves, rugs and cushions.

Her love of colour and original graphics is still evident in her work – and the club culture of Galaxy prevails in her fashion work.

“It was when my son’s friend started discovering my previous pieces that I thought, ‘This is kind of cool’. I’m handing it over to a new generation and they like it.’’

Thorn says she is focused on keeping her inner strength intact and listening to her body now. Her earthed philosophy makes sense after her health scare.

“I keep my business small and do what I can afford to do,” she says. Her clothes are manufactured in Bali.

he shopping landscape was very different in 1999. Department stores were still dominant and niche marketers were still in their infancy.

Beauty brands were limited and internet shopping was a fledgling phenomenon in the US but still the great unknown in Australia.

In the midst of the Y2K threat (remember that?), a 21-year-old woman hatched a plan in her garage to change the face of beauty shopping forever.

“I had looked at the growing number of beauty sites in the US and kept wishing someone would do one here in Australia,” says Kate Morris, the chief executive and founder of online beauty website Adore Beauty.

Morris grew up in Launceston, Tasmania. She always knew she would head to the mainland as soon as she finished school. “Tasmania was my comfort zone and I knew I had to get out of it,” she says.

As soon as she finished high school, Morris headed to Monash University to study business and law. But she ditched her law studies after a week because she wanted a career in the beauty industry.

Morris’s fascination with beauty is thanks to her mother’s seemingly endless supply of Estée Lauder and Helena Rubinstein products.

That led to part-time jobs at department store cosmetics counters while juggling her studies. It was there, behind the once all-important glass counters, that she realised beauty service had to change.

“I realised that most women found that shopping environment intimidating, limiting and disempowering,” Morris says.

“Like me, there were many women who couldn’t buy what they wanted where they lived. I had a

strong feeling that online shopping would solve all those problems.”

With no money to realise her dream, Morris approached her boyfriend’s (now husband’s) parents for a loan. “They were absolutely generous and wrote out a cheque for $12,000,” she says.

“I think somewhere in the back of their minds they might have felt that they were never going to see this money again, but they gave me the cash with no conditions. They were prepared to take a chance.”

With money in hand, Morris began the difficult steps to build a website. She soon realised it would be useless without products to sell.

“I was turned away by most brands only because they did not understand the concept,” she says.

“Two brands that are no longer available decided to take the plunge … and the Adore Beauty site was born.”

Slowly but steadily, more brands came on board.

Today the site has more than 120 brands and attracts more than two million visitors a year. It also has a thriving customer forum. Not bad for a company that had only one sale a week when it launched.

The $12,000 company that began 15 years ago will reap $10 million this year and employs 27 people. But it wasn’t all a walk in the park.

For the best part of five years, Morris was accountant, warehouse hand, customer service, stocktaker, computer guru and buyer all rolled in one. She lives by a Winston Churchill quote: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Morris’s success led to her winning last year’s Telstra Business Women’s Awards – Innovation Award for Victoria. She was also named Telstra’s 2010 young

Some things are worth waiting for.

Reaching Australian shelves a year after its initial release in the band’s native Canada, The Courtneys is a welcome throwback to fuzzy ’90s grrl pop. There are noisy echoes of Sonic Youth, Elastica and Life Without Buildings, but songs such as Insufficient Funds bounce with a summery lightness. There’s a surprising depth, and wit, to the lyrics that lifts the record above most of its slacker pop peers. It isn’t difficult to see why the group have been equally lauded by Mac DeMarco and Tegan and Sara – this is music as sharp as it is messy. Even better, it’s rackety fun. \

SBS Two has become something of a haven for offbeat comedy. Free-to-air can be tough on Australian viewers looking for smarter fare than Modern Family Family, with networks tending to shove anything remotely innovative into the graveyard slot.

Despite being international hits, Community and Parks and Recreation were messed about by major channels before SBS Two gave them a proper chance to shine.

New import Brooklyn Nine-Nine isn’t as bonkers as Community and lacks the softly bleak political commentary of Parks, but it shares a similar spirit, managing to be at once affectionate and acerbic.

Andy Samberg (of Lonely Island fame) is crass junior detective Jake, assigned to the 99th precinct of the NYPD. He’s surprisingly good at his job and, despite being chronically puerile, remains slightly less ridiculous than the world surrounding him.

Like Parks, Brooklyn Nine-Nine benefits from a strong supporting cast of daft but loveable characters. While the storylines are silly enough, much of the humour comes from the background dynamic, which means it’s worth giving the show a few episodes to bed in. \

Any major event where accommodation reaches capacity presents an opportunity for a pop-up tent village, says Flash Camp CEO Cameron Arnold.

Launching at last year’s Falls Festival at Byron Bay, the award-winning Flash Camp is pioneering a market where events, tourism and a five-star hotel experience collide.

While Flash Camp at a music festival can be marketed to ageing fans looking for comfort, it has proved equally popular with younger fans. Butlers, hair stylists, security guards and on-site hosts are some of the elements that create a point of difference between this glamping experience and others.

“It’s about the experience, the service and the hosts,” Arnold says. Flash Camp aims to expand to events throughout Australia and can accommodate more than 400 guests. \

Peggy Sue on the Mornington Peninsula offers a sought-after glamping experience. The distinctive silver bullet form of the rounded aluminium caravan (main picture) is the height of ’60s style and sure to stand out in a foreshore campsite.

Jessie Curtis-Griffiths and her husband Scott started Happy Glamper just over a year ago. Curtis-Griffiths describes herself as an “elusive fairy” – secure your own Foreshore Reserve campsite, anywhere from Rye to Blairgowrie, and the site will be set up and styled in readiness for your arrival.

In addition to Peggy Sue (the renovated 1966 Airstream Trade Wind caravan imported from California), there is Miss Myrtle, a 1955 vintage caravan, canvas bell tents and larger Lotus Belle tents. The Happy Glamper can accommodate weekends away or special events for up to 90 people. \

Every kid dreams of being locked in the zoo for a night, and the opportunity to get behind the scenes with wild animals when they are off-duty. Werribee Open Range Zoo has an African savannah, wild animals and a safari adventure by day, but the ultimate drawcard is that overnight experience.

Their slumber safari is glamping in an African adventure setting. In fact, “the best African experience outside Africa”, boasts general manager Cathy Nixon.

A village of eight tent lodges makes a select group of glampers. The hosted overnight stay includes a guided tour, dinner in the dining hall, a night walk to check out the nocturnals, marshmallows by the fire and a guided 6am walk to catch the animals waking up. \

oMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, was the first institution to recognise cars as functional works of art by establishing a permanent collection of ground-breaking examples, and now the National Gallery of Victoria is taking a step down the same road with an exhibition opening this week.

his pocket of Burwood is in transition. “A change is gonna come”, an old song goes, and this is not small change. No half measures here. We are not talking about extensions that add a room or storey to existing buildings. Almost without exception, small bungalows are being replaced, not retained.

Give or take another 10 years, the present streetscape in this pocket of Burwood would be a fond memory. This is not the first house to be built in anticipation of the coming tomorrows, but it is among the larger ones.

To start, each of the four bedrooms upstairs has its own en suite and walk-in wardrobe.

The main bedroom, buffered from the three other bedrooms by a family lounge or rumpus room, has more.

Its roomy en suite has matching but separate floating vanities topped by low-line vessel sinks (rectangular, with rounded corners). Its dressing room is lined with an assembly of shelves, drawers and tall built-in wardrobes; it’s a walk-in with attitude.

By area, the main bedroom (5.3 by 5.9 metres) is larger than the rumpus room upstairs. Together with its en suite and dressing room, this bedroom is a suite that makes a large footprint, but the pleasant surprise is there is still so much space left for all the other rooms.

There is no cramping of style in this house with its three-metre ceilings, 234-centimetre internal doors (the standard door in Australia is 204 centimetres) and streamlined rooms. The living zones downstairs are also designed to be big and beautiful.

The entry leads, on its left, directly into a formal lounge.

To its right is a guest bedroom – the only bedroom in the house with a built-in (not walk-in) wardrobe.

This is a new house in a neighbourhood that feels like it is taking on a new attitude. There are, however, some things that do not change, such as the appeal of being close to schools, shops and trains.

Public schools less than three kilometres away include primary and secondary schools in the suburbs of Ashwood, Mount Waverley and Camberwell. Deakin University’s Burwood campus is less than a kilometre away.

HOW DO I PREPARE TO MOVE HOUSE?

Packing requires careful planning, so here are some tips you may want to keep in mind: pack all boxes to capacity, but do not overload them with heavy material; label them with a description of the room (or area) of your new home where you intend them to be unpacked; if you have to dismantle any furniture, place all the nuts and bolts in a plastic bag and tape it to the furniture; wrap glassware individually in towels or packing materials; tape and seal all cleaning fluids; carry valuable items such as passports, jewelry and cash with you rather than leaving them with revivalists; and, finally, sell or give to charity everything you no longer require.

Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.

“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses.

Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.
