Sure, that person will probably come from and within a political party, but the US style of creating government from a hand-selected group of specialised, often civilian, individuals to take on policy portfolios would be enormously attractive to an electorate fed up with underachievers and party flogs.

Large elements in the electorate yearn for the larger-than-life figure who can cut through party constraints and lead with conviction. In this political system, that’s seen as a hopeless and romantic notion.

But with a president and the addition of a locally elected representative to a reversioned Parliament/Congress, we might just end up with true representation.

I don’t particularly care whether a monarch goes or stays. But if our leaders are going to keep behaving like one-person bands, then I’d at least like a direct say in who sings the song. \

A new sound has hit the Manningham airwaves. Members of the Persian community recently launched Radio Neshat, a Persian-language radio station that is run out of a small studio in Doncaster.

The 24-hour web-based broadcaster, which has been on the air for about two months, features Persian pop and traditional music, news and current affairs, and lifestyle programming.

Broadcaster Majid Samadi said about 15 volunteers had worked for 12 months to get the initiative up and running.

Mr Samadi said the programs were aimed at Afghan and Tajikistani Australians, as well as Manningham’s large Iranian population.

“It will appeal to anyone who speaks Persian,” he said.

Ethic radio stations such as 3ZZZ broadcast shows in Persian, but Mr Samadi said there was demand for more from within the community.

“It was just one hour a week so people couldn’t reach it. Most of the time it was too early in the morning,” he said.

“We thought, ‘We need something more’.”

The station covers cultural events in the community, and will have professionals –

such as lawyers and doctors – on air to offer advice to Persians with questions about living in Australia.

It also sent reporters to cover the recent Asian Cup soccer tournament.

Radio Neshat is funded by private sponsors including two Persian companies, with all

the broadcasters and technical staff working as volunteers.

parking stoush at deakin A student union petition signed by more than 1500 people has seen Deakin University back down in a tussle over parking fees.

The campaign was launched by the Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) after frustrated students accused the university of a “cash grab”.

Under the changes made by the university, yearly parking permits, which cost $250, will only be valid from April 1, despite classes beginning on March 9.

Students will now also be charged to park on campus during Orientation Week, which begins on March 2. Those without a parking permit are slugged $6 a day in casual fees.

Following the petition, the university announced that students who could prove they needed to drive to campus could apply to DUSA for yearly parking permits that would take effect on the earlier date.

While students who are unable to do so will still be affected by the changes, DUSA president Stuart Lasker welcomed the decision.

“The university has done the right thing in listening to student concerns and taking immediate action,” he said.

He described the parking situation at Deakin’s Burwood campus as “dire”, as even those with permits were not guaranteed a space because the university sold “many more permits than there were spaces”.

He said a lack of parking meant students were often “forced to hunt for parking in the surrounding suburbs”.

Mr Lasker said many were fined and missed classes as a result, while suburban streets were being choked with cars.

Deakin Campus Services executive director Chris Jones said the changes were an attempt to manage traffic flow on its campuses.

He said the university was working with DUSA to minimise the impact.

“Students considering driving should look at the transport choices Deakin supports, including priority parking for car pooling, convenient access to public transport and great facilities for walking and cycling.”

Mr Lasker said public transport was not a viable option for many students coming from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. \ LHG

Council defends road plan

that would connect the brickworks development to Eley Road.

Late last year the council received a petition with 90 signatures raising concerns the roundabout would increase congestion on GLENN Eley Road.

Glenn said residents were against the roundabout and dismissed claims from the council that the local roads “were capable of carrying increased traffic”.

“We don’t want it,” he said. “The road is too narrow.”

Mr Green said the council had considered the impact of traffic from the Brickworks development, and that the applicant had submitted a traffic impact assessment.

“Potential transfer of traffic into nearby local streets from the development is expected to have a minimal impact on the operation of the road network,” he said.

“There is a restriction on the number of proposed dwellings having vehicle access from Eley Road through the site,” Mr Green said. \ LHG

Whitehorse Council has been urged to take action to curb speeding and excessive traffic in a narrow Blackburn South street.

It comes only a few weeks after the council gave developer Australand the green light for a large retail and housing project at the nearby Burwood Brickworks.

Blackburn South resident Glenn, 51, said residents were frustrated by motorists speeding down Eley Road.

He said he was concerned “something catastrophic” would happen on the street, because the speed humps were not steep enough to deter hoons.

“It’s a skinny road; someone’s going to end up through a front fence,” said Glenn, who did not want his surname used.

But Whitehorse city development general manager Jeff Green said a council review in August found the speed humps were working.

The road carried about 4700 vehicles a day, with 85 per cent of drivers travelling at, or below, 50.9 kilometres per hour, the review found. Mr Green said the review found the “speed and volume of traffic in Eley Road are at acceptable levels”.

The February 21-22 event will feature pieces from eight French artists as well as local potters from around Australia. Organiser and Warrandyte North resident Jane Annois (pictured) said the expo, now in its 15th year, was based on pottery markets in France.

Ms Annois said Warrandyte and its surrounding suburbs have a long history as a hub for ceramic artists.

Breaking down barriers will be the real goal when police and members of Manningham’s multi-faith community take to the soccer field next month.

The Respect-Manningham Soccer Round Robin puts youngsters through their paces with a series of soccer drills and activities.

A-League side Melbourne City FC will oversee the soccer clinic this year, before the event culminates with a match between Victoria Police and a multi-faith team representing Manningham.

The event forms connections between the many faith communities in Manningham and the police, organisers said.

Manningham police Inspector Geoff Darlison said about 300 people took part in the round robin last year. Police are concerned residents are flouting fire restrictions in bushfire-prone parts of Manningham.

It comes after police were forced to attend two fire-related incidents last week.

A 51-year-old Donvale man will be charged with illegally burning off garden waste in his backyard on February 8.

Burning off has been banned in Manningham since this season’s fire restrictions began on December 8.

Warrandyte police Constable Rhys Doughty-Cowell said the man would be prosecuted by Manningham Council.

On February 9, police were called to an unattended campfire near the park rangers’ office at Pound Bend Road in Warrandyte.

Constable Doughty-Cowell said the fire was still burning when police arrived on scene at 3am. “We’d encourage people to report suspicious behaviour in bushland and observe fire restrictions,� he said.

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett has urged Victorians to keep an eye out for possible arson activity this season. “Victoria is one of the highest bushfire risk areas in the world so people need to remain vigilant,� Ms Garrett said. \ LHG

Hardware giant Bunnings is yet to progress on its long-awaited move into Doncaster, nearly two years since the development received the green light.

Manningham Council approved the company’s plans for a retail hardware store in May 2013.

The development at 659-669 Doncaster Road would involve a six-storey apartment tower being built above a Bunnings warehouse, with two further residential buildings next to the store.

However Manningham Council chief executive Joe Carbone said the council was yet to approve any town planning drawings for the proposal.

“Having town planning drawings approved is a prerequisite for a building permit,” Mr Carbone said. “However, council has not approved a set of town planning drawings.”

Bunnings general manager of property Andrew Marks would not address questions about why the project had not moved forward or when it would be built.

“Bunnings continues to work closely with Manningham Council and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with council to see the commencement of this project soon,” he said.

“At the appropriate time we may consider various options to deliver the development, including partnering with a residential developer.” \ LHG

Whitehorse Council could be set to enter the world of social media.

The council remains one of only a handful of municipalities in metropolitan Melbourne without active Facebook and Twitter pages.

Councillors are expected to debate employing a communications officer to manage social media during budget discussions in the coming weeks.

Cr Helen Harris said she believed the council should be active on social media platforms.

“Local government is all about communication.”

Cr Raylene Carr, who mentioned social media as a way to reach out to residents during a council meeting last year, agreed.

“Whether or not I like social media, it’s a way to connect with young people,” she said. “It’s the way of the future.”

Chief executive Noelene Duff said the council would consider developing a social media presence if resources allowed.

“An official Facebook page for all council matters would require significant resources in order to respond to the many queries and comments posted daily,” she said.

on court & in court – it’s a busy life for a new vixen

B

eing a professional sportswoman is hard enough at the best of times, but Melbourne’s newest Vixen is juggling performances on the netball court with the rigours of a burgeoning law career off it.

Chloe Watson, 20, is in her third year of a law degree at the Australian Catholic University and has just signed a one-year deal with the ANZ Championship premiers.

It’s a daunting task but Watson was not showing signs of strain. “It’s definitely a test,” she said. “The uni helps me to fit my timetable around my training, but it’s just about me managing my time really well. If I have a couple of free hours it’s about prioritising, whether it’s time to study or train or rest.”

Watson recently completed a placement at Eastern Community Legal Centre in Box Hill and said the possibility of being in court rather than on a court helped guide her choices.

“My favourite subjects in years 11 and 12 were legal and politics,” Watson said.

She said that while she had also been keen on dietetics and physio, these interests were always connected with netball.

“I just loved that law was so different.

“I’ve always enjoyed family law, and being able to get out there [Box Hill] and get to the courts was just unreal. I loved it.”

“I was born in Australia, my mother was born in Australia and her father was born in Australia, so we lost a bit of connection with the traditions as we grew up. But we work hard at Chinese New Year because it was my family who brought the big dragon that marches through Chinatown here.

We had a dragon in Melbourne called Sun Loong that was getting old. My father was the first Chinese-Australian City of Melbourne councillor, David Wang. In 1977 he started fund-raising for a new dragon with the Chinese community leaders and when my dad died the following year, my mum, Mabel, and my brother took over.

They went to the original dragon-making town in China – Foshan. But since the Communists came in 1949, the art of dragon-making had died. My brother and mother took back the scales and body of the Sun Loong and the people there took four months to work on our new dragon. More than 100 people helped and that project revitalized the dragon-making industry.

Our dragon is 92 metres long, has 6160 scales and needs 200 people to march with it. It’s the largest processional dragon in the world and on Chinese New Year I run up and down the Chinatown procession, telling the head to walk slower or faster! It’s exhausting.

I think I’ve become more Chinese as I’ve grown older.

I grew up with fish and chips and football but now I embrace being Chinese. On Chinese New Year Day, I have a few superstitions. I don’t sweep and I don’t wash my hair because it means washing away good fortune.”

“When I was much younger, especially when my grandparents were still alive, celebrations were very traditional. It was the only time of the year my grandfather had two days off and he told me once that, ‘No man who rises before dawn 360 days a year fails to make his family rich’. So when he had his two days off in a row for the year, he was delightful and spoiled us grandkids rotten!

Our family used to own a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, so we’d close that and everyone would come and eat. The food is a highlight and it’s the same repertoire every year. Now we eat at mum’s house and she puts on a feast – there’s always a whole fish, duck or suckling pig, fried wontons, pork trotter with abalone and sea cucumber, fresh fruit plate and lots of drinks.

Apart from the food, it’s nice to have everyone under one roof and spend time. As I get older I actually quite like my siblings! The celebratory period goes for around eight days and each day has a meaning. One day is everybody’s birthday so everyone gets to feel special and we eat noodles to signify a long life. The first day has a lion or dragon dance to usher in prosperity, and when we were younger we used to get red envelopes of money.

The last day has firecrackers to ward off the spirits.

Chinese New Year continues a long-standing tradition and maintains the importance of family and food. To me, it stresses the importance of all the things my grandfather stood for, too – hard work and family. It ushers in a year of new opportunities and inspires a sense of conduct to work hard and focus on personal aspects, such as being harmonious and peaceful, taking care of one’s health and living well.”

“Chinese New Year is meant to be a time of family and of renewal – much like the Gregorian calendar New Year with those New Year’s resolutions. It’s about refreshing things and rebooting the hard drive! It’s about starting the New Year in an exciting and optimistic way.

I usually celebrate the same way every year. Most of my relatives live in Sydney so I go to mum and dad’s place with my older brother and his family and kids. Mum will have spent ages slaving away in the kitchen making the most beautiful meal. My parents go out together that morning to buy takeaway barbecue ducks or barbecue pork from the local Chinese shops or from the market in Victoria Street, Richmond.

Mum also buys tiny red envelopes from a shop in Chinatown and puts a lucky token inside – usually lollies or money. They are for good luck because at this time of year it’s about giving good fortune to others and we all look forward to opening our envelope during our meal. It’s all about family and stuffing ourselves full of delicious food.

But I do remember that some years as a child we weren’t at home because mum was the Chinese language broadcaster on SBS radio for a long time, so she would be part of a big outside radio broadcast in the city on Chinese New Year. It didn’t occur to me how famous and recognisable mum’s voice was until one year when I went along to the celebrations with her in the city and saw the crowds flocking around her. She had so many fans – more fans than I have! I remember being very impressed then.

This time of year is not so much about taking stock for me – I do that more on January 1. But I do like sitting down with family, catching up on our news and talking about what we want to do during the next year.

Oh, and it’s always about a new haircut, too. Mum always encourages me to have a haircut before Chinese New Year. Is that part of shedding bad luck? Or maybe it’s just about smartening myself up. Get a short back and sides and look presentable in the New Year!” \

and was selected to train with Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 11. He became known as Mao’s Last Dancer after defecting to the west and writing his memoir of the same name. After living in Melbourne for many years, he is now artistic director of the Queensland Ballet. This time of year features family and dumplings using his mother’s recipe.

“Chinese New Year is very much about family and friends. We usually have a dinner at home and I make traditional Chinese dumplings using my mother’s recipe, which is very special and a labour of love.

I always looked forward to Chinese New Year because it was the only time of year my parents would be more relaxed and my father wouldn’t be working, so had more time to spend with us. He’d make paper kites for me to fly and we played games.

I remember one year that started with a disaster and ended up as such a joyful experience. My family were a peasant family that relied on farming and that year was tough and there was a drought. Normally my father saved enough money to buy a few firecrackers but that year there were none. A friend somehow got hold of powder – like gunpowder – and we made our own firecrackers, but one of mine exploded in my hand.

My parents took me to hospital and I was put under anaesthetic and didn’t wake for two days. When I woke I was surrounded by firecrackers – people had brought them to the hospital for me as gifts. But the special surprise was that my oldest brother, who was a Red Guard in Tibet, made a visit home. So what started as a terrible event became my most memorable New Year.”

ALICE PUNG is a lawyer and author whose parents

survived Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia.

Her latest book is Laurinda, published by Black Inc. She says Chinese New Year is about celebrating family.

“My grandmother was the matriarch and she was the oldest survivor in her work collective in the killing fields in Cambodia – the oldest survivor of 5000 people. She was 72 when she came to Australia with my parents.

On Chinese New Year my grandmother got the whole family together. We’d clean out the garage of our housing commission house in Braybrook. Mum and dad worked in that garage as goldsmiths but on this day they put in a big kitchen table and we had a feast. My father gradually sponsored his siblings to come here and every year there would be a few more family members.

Before we ate, and we do the same today, we worship our ancestors. We have pictures of my grandparents and we burn incense, set the food in front of their pictures, and we don’t eat until the incense has burned down.

he best laugh I have had in a very long time came recently when a friend told me she gets checked out all the time by men, but only from the back.

When they move their eyes away from her rear-view assets to look at her face, she reckons they run a mile.

The issue, she says, is that from behind she can pass for a 20-year-old because she has long blonde hair and a pretty good figure. Once menfolk see her face and realise she’s old enough to be their mum, they reel back in horror and run for the hills. She says she can see the shock in their faces.

Why did I find this so funny? Because she called it, it was hers to call, and even though I’m not convinced the story is as factually correct as she might have me believe, because to me she will always be the 13-year-old I met in high school, there is a universal truth to this story. Once you get to a certain age, women don’t count as much to men – and the best thing is most of us find this fact hysterical. Cheers to us.

It’s also good to have a laugh about ageing, because the whole world is so serious and fixed on it as a negative, something to be embarrassed about, to try to hide. Calling out your own lined face and wobbly armpits for what they are – signs of life lived well – should be a right and an absolute pleasure.

Chrissie Swan did it recently on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! (we watched only the first episode, I promise), when she bagged out the producers for not making concessions for an “overweight, middle-aged mother of three” – her words – because she had to walk up and down

mountains in long pants and searing heat. She did it with that great Swan smile (cementing her status as the most interesting and funny person on whatever reality television show she appears) and again I shrieked because it was just excellent, especially for all of us at home on the couch nursing well-rounded jelly bellies.

Delicious also because there were no similar self-deprecating musings from her male counterparts, no shout-outs from Merv Hughes about a sunburnt bald spot or Andrew Daddo about having to carry an extra layer or two up the mountain.

What happens to your body when you age is funny. You can’t not laugh at turkey necks or wrinkled knees or a rogue hair on the bottom of a chin. It just feels like, after years of being exercised into shape and plucked and preened, your body gets to a point (about 45-plus, I reckon) where it says, ‘Stuff you I’m tired now I’m going to do whatever I like, so give me some carbs and some wine and some Mint Slices already’.

How we as a society react to, narrate and measure the outward signs of ageing is the bizarre bit.

Just this week I read this quote from Hollywood heavyweight Jennifer Lopez: “We’re all going to get to a point where it shows we’re ageing but I try to find my value in the person I am. That beauty shines much more.”

and I read them like novels,” she says.

Thom has been a passionate foodie all her life and she finally decided to pack in her day job last March. “It was a long time coming,” she says. “It’s wonderful to come to work and do what you love.”

After a few hectic weeks, she turned what was an Italian-style deli into a foodstore that specialises in quality, locally sourced produce, mostly Victorian or Tasmanian.

She likes to have a connection with her suppliers and she and husband Greg have had many enjoyable field trips searching for those special items.

“I love to deal with small companies because they’re so passionate about their products.”

The store, with its clean lines, dark timber shelves and polished floor, incorporates a small café with a short menu to showcase the deli produce.

Check what’s on offer on the rolls of butcher’s paper hanging behind the counter. Wholesome breakfasts include granola, croissants, fruit toast, French toast, bacon and egg rolls, and free-range eggs done any way you please.

Lunch might be ploughman’s platter, salad, dips and bread, antipasti, toasties or BLT. If you find the relishes irresistible, you can buy them.

izzaiolo Johnny Di Francesco has taken a massive gamble at the casino. The latest offshoot of his 400 Gradi restaurant group is a 400-seat behemoth founded largely on the premise that his fame as a champion pizza maker will pull the necessary crowds to fill it.

It looks like the bet’s paid off. Four months in, Gradi at Crown is rarely less than crazy-busy for dinner and, come weekends, the kitchen’s flat out feeding 1200-1600 diners a day. Whichever way you slice it, that’s got to be a handsome pay-off for the pizza king.

The downside to such rapid success is that Gradi at Crown can sometimes feel like it’s floundering. Service is a particular stress point, not least because a fair whack of the 120 staff are foreigners on short-term visas that offer no incentive to management or workers to invest in each other. Their accents are charming but the depth of their ignorance about basic stuff – the food, the wine, the English language – can be gobsmacking.

Di Francesco knows there’s work to be done. He says the restaurant’s only “at 20 per cent” of where he wants it to be; he’s spending most days on site trying to get the systems right. To his credit, there’s a noticeable improvement between our first and second visits.

What doesn’t change – and hopefully never will – is the primacy of his margherita pizza, the one that beat 600 other contestants at the Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza (Pizza World Championship) in Parma in Italy last year. Di Francesco’s version is the regulation size – 35cm with 2cm high edges – smeared with San Marzano tomatoes, four molten discs of buffalo mozzarella, seven basil leaves, garlic and salt.

The dough, cooked for a maximum 90 seconds at 400+ Celsius in the kitchen’s imported wood-fired ovens, is blistered and charred and far tastier than I ever imagined a flatbread of flour, water and salt might be.

Of the two meat dishes we try, a sprawling Sicilian veal cutlet is impeccably crumbed but the meat is too thin to retain the juices. A wedge of lemon is small consolation. And a lamb rack slathered in mild mustard may be a bit too ruddy and lifelike for some tastes.

There’s a tempting array of dolci from dessert calzones to zuppa inglese, but we’re feeling cheesey. The intriguing, all-Italian line-up is priced by weight and served with paper-thin Sardinian carasau bread. Here the carasau is cut down to a mannered size and topped with slithers of our chosen stinky Taleggio and Tuscan Pecorino. Both delicious, and when we ask for more bread the waitress obliges with a big plate of the stuff.

Grapes for this wine are grown across the peninsula and this edgy, energetic pinot noir is simply a delight. It’s an earthy, autumnal style of pinot noir, with loam, undergrowth, stalks and perfume to the cherry and raspberry aromas. It’s concentrated, but oh-so-light in the mouth, with a raspberry, cherry and strawberry flavour, plus energetic orange-flavoured acid. There’s a nice stalky grip to go with good length.

This Extra Special Bitter is bottled unfined and unfiltered and great effort goes into transporting the beer cold to bars and bottleshops to keep it fresh. It even comes with a brewed-on date on the label – mine was January 16. This smells of caramel, banana, peach and Vegemite toast. A creamy, smooth texture – it’s low in carbonation, as the ESB style dictates – leads to malty, herbal flavours and a gentle but ever-present bitterness that rounds off the finish.

It’s well structured, with the acid and sandy tannin balance spot-on for the blackberry, blood plum, cherry and spice flavours. There’s a lovely flow across the tongue and a bright, savoury exit.

Blanc de blanc means it’s 100 per cent chardonnay (clones 76 and 96 for the wine nerds among us) and the grapes are all grown on the Coldstream vineyards. Lively aromas of white nectarine, lemon biscuit and fennel seed lead to intense and zippy lemon, greengage plum and nougat flavours.

A chalky line of citrus acid adds grip and there’s a touch of balanced mid-palate sweetness that adds generosity and length.

Airlie Bank is the entry-level label and the grapes are all sourced from the estate’s 150 hectares of vines. Stonefruits, figs, blossom and a zip of lemon zest on the complex nose. It’s bright and zippy, with a creamy texture and an energetic line of grapefruitflavoured acid for the fleshy stone fruit and honeysuckle flavours to hang off. There’s a fine line of powdery tannins and a fine finish.

SPORTSWEAR DESIGNER WHO IS ALL ABOUT TAKING RISKS

A

s a finalist in the National Graduate Showcase, part of next month’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, Melbourne designer Alexandra Louise Champion Hackett shows a striking originality with her men’s sportswear brand inspired by found objects, trash and shoplifters.

“I love exploring the line between art and fashion and why the line exists at all,” Hackett says.

She’s a recent RMIT graduate who runs her own studio space in Footscray.

Where commercial labels tend to toe the line when it comes to fabrication, this young designer is all about taking risks – because she can.

You’ll find everything from security tags to banana peels repurposed in her sportswear brand, A.L.C.H. (yes, Hackett’s initials become her brand name).

Hackett is hooked on making the unimaginable somehow wearable. She’s come up with an urban men’s collection that’s sports luxe with an original bent.

As a finalist in the Target Australia joint showcase during VAMFF, Hackett is one of 12 who could win $25,000 and have her capsule collection sold in Target stores across the country.

The graduate showcase is designed to show off the trailblazers in emerging fashion in Australia. This year, three of the 12 to make the shortlist are designers from Melbourne.

A judging panel including Target’s womenswear general manager Gillian Ridley Whittle, VAMFF chief executive Graeme Lewsey, fashion designer Yeojin Bae, stylist Kate Gaskin, and Designers for Target head Anthony Pecora chose this year’s finalists.

“My collection is based on a few key areas,” Hackett says.

“I look at the concept of shopping and subverting the sportswear genre. Then I look at the idea of shoplifters in luxe sportswear and from that I opt for unorthodox fabrication like retail electronic tags and fabrics that look like receipts but they’re made out of machine-washable paper. I like the idea of mixing it up, exploring the line between consumer, apparel and shoplifter.”

Hackett’s autumn/winter collection uses everything from NASA space foil to artificial turf, polypropylene to laser-cut mesh. There’s some knitwear too.

Six of Hackett’s pieces will be on show at the National Graduate Showcase.

Next stop is the skills park. An intimidating-looking seesaw is the first obstacle. I almost chickened out but luckily I had my friend Stan Poniger there for moral support. Then there are rollers, a log ride, some steps, timber ramp and platforms.

Woolly Butt is the next highlight, a wide sloping section where you can clock up silly high speeds.

Then the fun comes to an abrupt end. The next eight-kilometre climb up the Stonefly will wound you and leave you crying for mercy. It will test your fitness and wits and, if you are unprepared, as I was, it will break you.

There’s some joy at the top of the mountain; a stunning view of Mount Buller, which reminds me of just how far I have come. I am now halfway, about 20 kilometres into the ride.

“There is a constant emotional exchange with the mountain. It’s in control and demands you pay with sweat and pain before it rewards you with glorious twisty single-track sections,” Poniger says.

The descent down Stonefly is the next reward for that pain. This is the single-track section, growing quickly in reputation; it flows, it’s fast and provides plenty of opportunity to get airborne.

It has been a big day and, just when I feel spent, The Epicenter appears like a lighthouse in stormy seas. If there is something wrong with your bike or you, it can be fixed here. It is also a sensible starting point for the trail if you are a beginner or not at all into climbing.

Manager Yully Halloran says rider response to The Epicenter has been “super rad” (mountain bike talk for exceptional).

“There are such high levels of stoke that we are here.

Heaps of people haven’t heard about us and so, when they come down the trail, the level of relief on their face is incredible,” he says. “Then giving them heartbreaking news of how far they still have to ride is the next priceless thing. It’s a cool part of the job.”

It’s here that I meet 65-year-old David Mayne, who says he is semi-retired. While his mates are playing golf, he’s out bush bashing.

“The trails are awesome, steep and flowing all the way down, it is a stunning ride,” he says. “The rocky bends and clips can catch you out, but the little hairpins are well-designed and really nice. The good thing about mountain biking is that, when you have your gear on, everybody else around can’t tell how old you are. I’ve broken everything: collarbone, wrist, ribs – it annoys me because I’m out of action for a while.”

t was said in an offhand way, like many of the wisest words. “You should only buy a watch if it makes you dream.”

They were spoken by the Australian brand the manager of Jaeger-LeCoultre Pierre-Etienne Durand in Geneva last month at the Salon manual International de la Haute Horlogerie.

Jaeger, pronounced “ja-jer”, a brand in the watch world’s upper echelons, was showing its new wares, including a watch with a dial made of thinly sliced meteorite. Yes, meteorite. The outer space kind.

It is stratified, with slivers of different geometric shapes and shades overlaid. It really did lead to a kind of childlike dream state. Where has this come from? How did they manage to cut it so cleanly?

The German brand Montblanc that now handcrafts a range of “lifetime companions” used to just make pens. Then the dreaded words “multi-category” were uttered and they suddenly made leather goods, jewellery, and then finally, inevitably, watches. The thing is, they’ve recently poached Jaeger-LeCoultre’s dynamic chief executive Jérôme Lambert (as well as our Hugh Jackman as an ambassador) and now they’re making decidedly significant watches. Like this mind-expanding model whose 47mm red gold case houses a worldtime indication via northern and southern hemisphere half globes and a cylindrical tourbillon for good measure. \ RRP $405,000.

n our society the Christmas and New Year holiday binge is commonly teemed with regret and the ubiquitous: “I’ll eat healthier this year”, “I plan to lose weight and get fit”, “I will drink less alcohol” and yet it’s always the same outcome – by mid-January old habits resurface.

If I was given a pair of shoes every time someone broke their new year health resolution, I’d need to change my shoes every minute to prevent them collecting dust in the shoe storage mansion. New year resolutions could be compared to a Frisbee; they are tossed around without consideration for the next steps.

Removing lactose and gluten, quitting sugar, fasting two days a week and avoiding carbohydrates after 4pm with the intention of new year weight loss, will not result in longterm health and weight reduction. Adopting drastic and popular diets encourages overly restrictive and obsessive behaviours. They are not sustainable, commonly lead to failure and foster poor self-esteem.

Removing gluten from your diet if you are gluten sensitive, suffer with coeliac or IBS is crucial for optimal health. However any coeliac will gladly share the downsides of such a lifestyle. It is not a joy.

Injecting insulin six times a day and taking blood sugar measurements 12 times a day is far more inconvenient than chopping carrots and cucumber for morning tea.

love testing headphones. I can spend hours pretending to be hard at work while I’m listening to my favourite music, and headphones are small and light enough to send safely through the post so there’s no waiting around for couriers.

And so I reach the first unusual thing about these Oppos; they’ve arrived in a box nudging a cubic metre and weighing as much as a dozen bottles of red. Most of the space is taken up by the HA1 amplifier that is six kilograms and costs $1799, both impressive numbers, and the packaging is such that, should nuclear war erupt between order and delivery, the box will likely arrive intact.

The PM1 headphones ($1699) can operate independently of the HA1 amplifier but, given the technology in the amplifier, especially the digital to analogue converter (DAC), I suspect they’ll always be short-changed by anything else. And the way the amplifier handles big musical transients, like the thump halfway through the Firebird Suite, Suite is sensational.

Open the PM1 box and one finds … another box. But it’s beautiful. All laminated wood and gold clasps with the headphones nestling in a bed of velour. I’m already weak at the knees and I haven’t plugged anything in yet.

So I rig up the best CD player I own, feeding an optical signal into the HA1, which means all those little ones and zeroes will avoid the DAC in the CD player, to be turned into beautiful analogue music for my demonstrably analogue ears by the vastly superior one in the Oppo.

I put on an old Supertramp track, the slowly gathering Fool’s Overture from Even in the Quietest Moments, and suddenly I’m going all goosebumpy. It’s exciting, breathtaking, involving – just like the very first time I heard it. I follow that with some hard-driving techno punk that probably took an hour to record and three months to produce and I’m stunned that the bass line, moving blindingly fast and deep, can stay so accurately defined.

Rebecca Pidgeon is up so close and personal I can see her lips moving, Miles Davis is alive again, I crank Gypsy & The Cat so loud I

can visualise the neighbours banging at the door were these not headphones. I’m almost too scared to put on the wonderful Dawn Upshaw and Górecki’s Third, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.

But not quite. I turn out all the lights and lie on my back and let it rip, and I feel the pain of a sorely oppressed people resigned to their fate, every lingering nuance of it. I feel it so keenly I am almost moved to tears.

This open-walled design makes for spaces that are quiet and streamlined, with doors installed only where they are really necessary – to each bedroom, to the balcony and to the toilets.

In the en suite and family bathroom, the toilets are housed in separate cubicles. It’s a thoughtful and practical arrangement. The bedrooms share a rumpus room – another practical arrangement.

The quiet privacy of the upstairs rooms is a harmonic counterpoint to the largely open-plan living zones downstairs. The formal living and dining rooms are open plan, separated from the hallway only by partial walls.

Past this zone is the family and meals area, divided by a slim-line gas-log fireplace that warms both rooms.

The Caesarstone kitchen has glass splashbacks and 2pac cabinetry. It looks over a breakfast bar and is open to the family and meals zone. A walk-in pantry adds to the already ample storage spaces, while a 900-millimetre Bellissimo hob and oven provide the fire-power for the clean-line work spaces.

The family room opens to a covered deck that can well serve as an outdoor dining area. It overlooks a rear lawn edged by gardens. A games room off the family zone also opens to this spacious deck.

In all, this is a house with flowing spaces and great presence. Additionally, it has thoughtful, unifying touches, such as the plantation shutters used throughout as window dressings. The most pleasing of these features are the large doorways with no doors and the open walls that define rather than confine spaces.

Then one day, when they least expect it they walk past a property that’s open for inspection

HOW DO I FIND THEM?

Property boards and local marketing initiatives are great ways to let people who may not consume real estate media know that a property is available. Local papers are also useful, as a passive Buyer will peruse local real estate just to stay informed.

Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.

“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses.

Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.

“Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
