If anything, the holiday is now starting to feel more like being at home, with all the gadgets and gewgaws of everyday life. And all the cleaning that comes with them. (Of course, there’s always a dishwasher now, too.)

The sea-change/tree-change phenomenon also means you are never really up bush, just in another part of the extended suburbs, complete with the neighbour’s whipper snipper on Easter Saturday morning.

Tourism is one of the biggest sectors of the Australian and international economy, and nobody lasts a minute if what they provide isn’t up to non-stick scratch. Dalla-riva settles in ‘for the long haul’ politics

Richard Dalla-Riva is optimistic about the future.

The former Victorian trade, manufacturing, employment and industrial relations minister under former premier Ted Baillieu is upbeat about his role as the chairman of the parliamentary Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations committee, and winning his Eastern Metropolitan upper house seat in 2014.

After Mr Baillieu’s shock resignation on March 6, Mr Dalla-Riva heard he was sacked and made a backbencher on March 13 – he was in India representing Victoria on a trade mission in place of Mr Baillieu at the time.

He hadn’t eaten for 24 hours prior to hearing the news as he was crook with the Bombay bug from going overboard on “rich food”.

As TWR spoke to Mr Dalla-Riva in his parliament office, he was listening to reggae and said he wanted to tell his electorate “I’m back”. The ministerial workload had taken him away from the electorate, he explained.

campaign, Mr Dalla-Riva said he will mentor and coach Michael Sukkar, the Liberal candidate for Deakin: “Just to give some guidance … from a politician to an aspirational politician of how you should be doing things.”

He said he would “absolutely” contest the 2014 election: “I’m here for the long haul.”

And if the opportunity arose to be a minister again? “Never say never.”

But there are significant hurdles to that outcome. Mr Baillieu’s replacement, Premier Denis Napthine, hasn’t shown as much faith in Mr Dalla-Riva as Mr Baillieu had.

FrOG CensUs – nO CrOak Frog lovers around Melbourne will be out in force at local parks, creeks and wetlands as part of the autumn frog census. Melbourne Water spokesman Richard Akers said the water authority was hoping to find increases of the southern toadlet and growling grass frog species in Manningham and Whitehorse after wet conditions last winter. As part of the frog census, Melbourne Water is looking for volunteers to help with the project. It involves going to a local park or wetland and taking a short audio sample, which is then analysed by experts. Box Hill volunteer Yvonne Earnshaw said people often didn’t realise frogs lived in the suburbs. ‘‘It’s amazing the biodiversity we have,” she said. “There are a lot of frogs in the Wattle Park area. The Victorian Electoral Commission has been ordered to recount the votes in last year’s Manningham council elections in Mullum Mullum Ward.

It means 29,000 voters could be ordered back to the polls for a byelection, following claims by candidate Bob Beynon that the results were voided by an allegedly illegitimate candidate, David Muscat.

Mr Beynon claims a conviction Mr Muscat received in 2011 should have disqualified him from standing. At a Municipal Electoral Tribunal on Friday, Magistrate Michael Smith ruled that the ballots be counted again, with the 521 votes received by Mr Muscat excluded.

If the recount – without Mr Muscat’s preferences – finds that ward councillors Meg Downie, Paul McLeish and Sophy Galbally did not finish in the top three positions, a new election will be held.

The VEC said it expected to complete the recount by April 19. The three councillors and Mr Beynon will have the option to appeal the tribunal’s final decision at VCAT. In separate matters, Mr Muscat is being prosecuted by the Victorian local government watchdog and was expected to appear at a preliminary court hearing on April 9. \ KRIsTIan sILVa ksilva@theweeklyreview.com.au

Asked how he took the news of his sacking, Mr Dalla-Riva said: “The issue is not Richard Dalla-Riva. The issue is about what the new cabinet and what the new government can do to get its message out. It’s a forward step.’’

He said he didn’t know why Mr Baillieu stepped down but characterised the Baillieu administration as a government that hadn’t sold its successes.

“I still think we’ve done some real positive things, we just haven’t sold it. Richard Bowles has been described as a cross between Forrest Gump and Bear Grylls. It’s a tag the 34-year-old is proud to wear.

The Mitcham resident became the first person to run the world’s longest marked trail last year when he completed a five-month, 5330-kilometre trip from Healesville to Cooktown in northern Queensland. Weeks later, he headed to New Zealand to run 3054 kilometres from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island.

Now he’s off on another off-road, cross-country adventure. Bowles will begin the 1009-kilometre Israel National Trail run on April 15, doing the equivalent of two marathons a day to complete the trail in 12 days.

Originally from Leicester in Britain, “of course Bowles arrived in Melbourne 13 years ago it bloody and developed his passion for running hurts” while jogging around Albert Park Lake.

“I was a bit of a heavy boy, around the 90-kilogram mark. I decided to do something about that,” he said. “I did a five-kilometre fun run and it just grew from there. I found that I was getting quite good, and decided if I could place in the top five or top 10 in these races, what could I do if I applied myself?”

Now as a full-time ultra-trail runner, Bowles is open about the fact that he relies on sponsors to fund his travels.

He admitted the reason why he runs such long distances is still a bit of a mystery. But Bowles believes the long solo journeys make him a better person.

“You’re living in the moment,” he said.

“Most people strive for their whole life to do that, but I can do it 15 hours a day by putting some shoes on.

“Of course it bloody hurts – people assume because I run two marathons a day that I find it easy, but it’s still two marathons a day.

That’s the challenge and the addiction.”

Bowles joked that running around Australia and New Zealand had been “too easy”, and he chose to traverse Israel to “experience the landscape, people and the culture”.

“When I’m running down some of these old roads that Jesus carried the cross down, I hope it awakens something inside me.

A

hint of nostalgia permeates Kelly Landry’s tone as she discusses growing up in Geelong.

“We were outdoor kids. We had a great, big backyard and were always out riding bikes, skateboards and billycarts and we knew all of our neighbours … that’s something you don’t quite get in Sydney,” says Landry wistfully down the phone from her Bondi home, where she lives with her 18-month-old daughter Charlize and husband Anthony Bell.

Landry is the middle child between an older sister and younger brother to parents Glenda and Owen, but to the Australian public she’s the bubbly personality seen in some far-flung destination on Getaway each week.

After graduating from Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, Landry left for Melbourne to pursue modelling and a degree in public relations.

Admittedly, she didn’t have aspirations growing up to be one of Australia’s most recognisable television presenters.

“When I was 12 years old we visited Sea World and I was obsessed with dolphins. I found out what one of the dolphin trainers did, and he was a marine biologist. So from about 12 years old that’s exactly what I wanted to be.”

Nonetheless, the crossover into television from modelling was a natural progression: “I got to a point in my mid-20s when I thought this modelling thing has been really fun, and I don’t want a nine-to-five job yet, how can I extend this?”

Not long after, opportunity came knocking when Channel Seven asked her to be a presenter on Coxy’s Big Break, where her sun-kissed good looks and chemistry with the camera impressed the network executives, who quickly snapped her up for Sunrise, That’s Melbourne and the Lotto draw.

But it wasn’t just Channel Seven that took notice, with Nine poaching the rising star for a presenting role on Getaway. “[When I landed the job] It was pure elation. It was a dream come true.”

The self-confessed action junkie has travelled to every corner of the globe with the gig. And while it might look glamorous, and perhaps make you a little envious watching Landry stroll the sand in a bikini on an unpronounceable island, she assures that behind the scenes, it’s hard work.

“I certainly worked at it and nothing has fallen on my lap.

I’ve worked very hard and sacrificed a lot of things in terms of missing out on things and working 14 to 16 hours a day and working for nothing. But that’s what you do when you want to achieve something and you’re following a passion.”

Work has slowed somewhat for Landry since the birth of Charlize in 2011, allowing her to enjoy the fruits of her labour.

While Landry admits the “first few months were a steep learning curve”, she says she “couldn’t be happier” with her life at the moment.

Landry’s voice softens as talk turns to her husband, chief executive of Bell Partners accountancy firm in landry Sydney and on BRW’s Young Rich list, who she met returns to only a few weeks after giving up her search for the geelong “as perfect man. often as [i] “I had this notion in my mind that Prince Charming is going to ride down a beach on a horse in can” a sunset. Their fairytale romance provided the perfect gossip fodder for celebrity magazines, which ran stories about their engagement six months after meeting. More fuel was added to the fire when they eloped to New Zealand with 50 of their closest friends and family.

Landry is unsure what the future has in store for her, and while she won’t rule out more children, for now she is enjoying every moment watching her daughter grow up.

She returns to Geelong “as often as [I] can” to spend time with family and hit up local hot spots such as Sticks & Grace café on Pakington Street and Westfield Shopping Centre.

A possible foray into stepping behind the camera and producing is on the cards. But while she considers her options, Landry will be gracing the screen for Getaway again this year and zipping between Geelong and Bondi.

’m not really sure which bit comes first – the apple crumble or bootcamp.

If I go to bootcamp, I can have apple crumble. Or if I have apple crumble, I really, really need to go to bootcamp.

But what if I am so tired and full from apple crumble I can’t do bootcamp? And what if I just don’t have apple crumble and still do bootcamp? Naaaaaa … that would be just plain hard.

A psychologist I know once called this kind of mindset “doing a number on yourself”. It’s talking yourself in and out of doing things that are quite possibly good for you but may involve some sort of effort.

It’s like this: wake up and remember you have bootcamp, but tell yourself you had such a bad sleep last night and haven’t you just worked so hard this week you really do need to take it easy, and the house is such a mess and you really don’t need to be stiff and sore for the next two days because you’ve got such and such happening. So yes, cancel. You can make it up next week.

But then your mind says something like, if you go you’ll feel much better afterwards, and it is fish and chip night tonight so bootcamp will cancel out some of the cholesterol, so go on, go.

And then you say no, look, you really are shagged and a bit behind with work so if you don’t go you’ll have more time to catch up on things before the kids get home. But then maybe you should just go to bootcamp, get it over with and skip the coffee afterwards so you have more time to get things sorted.

But coffee with the girls after bootcamp is one of the reasons you do bootcamp. Why don’t you just catch up on work now, skip bootcamp and meet the girls at coffee. Then you can have one of those awesomely great days where you

feel guilty about not doing bootcamp all day long. Oh, but maybe you can skip apple crumble tonight to make up for it.

Or not.

Yep, that’s the internal disco inferno happening in my mind on (what should be) bootcamp mornings.

Often, “doing a number on yourself” involves talking yourself into doing things that are not so good for you. That’s my favourite kind of internal dialogue. More results oriented, it usually involves an extra glass of wine or helping of spaghetti. So much more fun.

My mate says she has a conversation with herself every night about chocolate. The “I really deserve it, I really shouldn’t, I’m trying to cut down, but it must be that time of the month” argument in her head is such a regular and quite exhausting occurrence she wears herself down and ends up having the chocolate anyway, quite often with a couple of glasses of wine. Because in the end, she really does deserve it.

It’s good. Life’s too short to not have chocolate.

It’s not just about food. We can go through the same agony with job interviews and relationships or buying and selling big items such as houses or cars. We over-analyse, imagine the worst and talk ourselves out of any sort of change, because sometimes it really is better to maintain a tricky relationship with the devil you know than to meet a new one.

That’s where apple crumble comes back into the picture.

n this line of business you can imagine how refreshing it is to front up to a restaurant untarnished by 21st-century kit. No Thermomixes, no Pacojets, no boil-in-the-bag sous-vide machines.

Sometimes you just want food that’s cooked with a little passion. Dishes prepared using senses and technique rather than switches and technology. Which is precisely what you’ll get at Rosa’s Kitchen.

You might remember Rosa Mitchell. She first made waves upstairs at the city library in a compact diner, also called Rosa’s Kitchen, where she ran a tight little Italian menu comprised of whatever she’d prepared on the day.

She then popped up briefly in Williamstown and now, thankfully, the diminutive Sicilian is back in business again – tucked up the top end of town in a space once known as Luccatini’s.

I’ve yet to find anyone who ate at Luccatini’s but Mitchell says the interiors were pretty hideous before they came in and gutted the place. Blue carpet, apricot walls (complete with classy blue marbling effect), wooden skirts and dadoes “and lots of very bad light fittings”.

The pastel excesses of the ’80s have been atoned for with a mod-Melbourne makeover of polished-concrete floors, softly glowing wall lanterns and a brick feature wall daubed with white. There’s a hint of Movida chic in the blackboard menus and the red, yellow and black timber chairs (don’t they have the same ones at Movida Aqui?), which is understandable given she’s backed by the same talent-spotters behind Movida and Pei Modern.

Her return is creating quite a stir. This is a dead-end lane, so you have to assume the constant stream of curious onlookers squinting into the shopfront and peering at my lunch are not just passing by but have come specifically to see what Rosa’s up to. (Why, there’s Martin Boetz, from Longrain, his face pressed up against the glass to check out the latest competition.)

There are just nine items on the menu. Very concise.

Mitchell, in butcher’s apron and red bandanna, is working the tables with a ready smile and a lively patter.

I’m not quite sure why she’s waiting tables when she concedes they’re short-staffed in the kitchen today (Hello? Aren’t you the chef?) but neither service nor plates seem to suffer from the arrangement.

She’s already done her fair share on the food front anyway, making almost everything on the antipasto plate from the pea frittata – really just fresh green pods set in lightly seasoned egg, the simplest of things – to pickled and marinated zucchini, fried ricotta, a little barley salad.

I could eat a whole plate of the fried ricotta, but then I never met a fried cheese I didn’t lust after. There’s nothing groundbreaking here; just straightforward, satisfying flavour combinations true to Mitchell’s Sicilian heritage (the aniseed hit of fennel in the salami, for instance).

As much as possible, she’s using fresh veggies from her farm in the central highlands – chicory, beetroot, spring onions and capsicum right now – and buying from farmers’ markets too. Herbs from Skipton, baby endive and kohlrabi from the Yarra Valley.

This is the right time of year for whitebait, and a starter special of lightly floured fingerlings, crusted with sea salt and spritzed with lemon, is just the thing to lift the spirits. Especially when paired with a willing Sicilian white like the muscat-scented Gibele Zibibbo.

Most of the grapes listed are Italian; at least a dozen are Sicilian. Sommelier and maitre d’ Lazlo Evenhuis can conjure appealing wine and food matches if you let him.

There’s another nosey parker at the window as we’re about to tuck into a saucy-looking bowl of spaghetti with mussels. He’s eyeing off our lunch as if it’s his,

apparently mesmerised by the flirty pink mussels. Using the universal sign language of food appreciation – a combination of thumbs up and nods – he asks through the glass if the pasta’s any good. I show him my clean cutlery to indicate we haven’t even tried it yet. Now buzz off.

It turns out the pasta’s perfectly al dente and delicious in its humble sauce of onion, garlic, tomato and those fleshy mussels.

The highlight of the stuffed calamari tubes are the green beans on the side, crisp and garlicky. The squid itself is tender and faultless but the stuffing – oregano, tomato, onions, capers, breadcrumbs and chopped tentacles – is gluggy, dense and not entirely loveable.

But it’s a rare misstep.

On a subsequent visit, when the place is heaving with lunchtime diners just before Easter and three dishes have already run out, we lap up a platter of orecchiette with cauliflower, anchovy and fried garlic crumbs, and marvel at the lightness of a small casserole of eggplant parmigiana. And that supple poached veal tongue, served warm and pink with pesto potatoes, is a plate I’ll come back for.

To finish, a single cannoli filled with Marsala-laced ricotta, the ends crusted with pistachio. It’s as good as the one I had in Catania a year ago, which only adds to the evidence that Rosa Mitchell hasn’t lost that light Sicilian touch, or her passion to please. \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au tO read mOre revieWs

ieke Buchan is open to adventure. As an eccentric tomboy – her words – and as a “kind of a kooky, goofy, eccentric nerd” – her words again – she’s up for a bit of moving out of the comfort zone.

It’s helped her broadcasting (she spent several years in the United States and Britain presenting sports programs), her writing (she’s working on a novel), her radio work (she worked on Eddie McGuire’s Hot Breakfast on Triple M for a couple of years) and her passion for risky business like rock climbing in gorges.

She’s done a lot of out-there things, so getting robbed in Barcelona didn’t faze her. Well, not much.

I’d asked her whether interesting things had happened to her when she was travelling alone. “All the time,” she says. “I was in Barcelona and I’d had a great weekend with friends. My bag got stolen. So I was in Barcelona with no money. I had eight euros left.

“I sat at the bar writing vitriolic poetry about having my bag stolen. It’s the only time anything bad’s happened to me on my travels. I started giggling going, ‘I’ve just spent my last eight euros on the world’s best caipirinha’ – rum and lime and palm sugar. I’d gone to this bar the night before and had been told (this drink) was amazing. I looked at my last eight euros and thought I could spend it on a banana or some apples from the supermarket or, you know, stuff it.”

She’d seen this “cool family” earlier in the day. “The father in the family walked up to me at the bar and said, ‘Do you remember me from today? This is my bar, I’ll take care of you’. He and his family entertained the hell out of me for the next seven days. I got very spoilt; got to see a real insider’s view of Barcelona.

“I’m a fairly gregarious person. I’m happy to talk to anyone. And it’s about being trusting. So many people are so wary when they travel.

“People just want to be nice to you and show you their town. And most locals don’t hate you for being a tourist; they hate you if you’re an obnoxious tourist. If you’re genuinely engaged and curious they’ll walk you two kilometres to show you their favourite coffee shop or to a piece of art you wouldn’t see on the gallery tour.”

Buchan’s latest role is on a new sports panel chat show for BigPond, called Sports Fan Club House, on Wednesday and Thursday nights, working alongside sportspeople and guests. “I’m excited because they want me to be my opiniated bolshie self.”

But back to the beginning. Buchan was born in Brisbane. When she was four, her family moved to Indonesia, where they lived for four years. “Dad worked in the oil industry. He’s one of those scientists who finds oil in rocks. I used to think that his job was to colour in, because he’d have these big seismic maps that he’d use to show where fault lines were.”

At school in Jakarta she found herself one-out. “I was the only little caucasian kid at my little Indonesian preschool and that was really formative for me,” she says. “I’m lucky because my parents are very curious travellers. I was an outsider who had to get to know people and got to know customs and developed a real curiosity and appetite for the world.”

She still understands a little Indonesian. “In most languages I know how to ask for the bar.”

The family moved to Sydney, where Buchan is “a product of the public school system – I’m a great believer in the public school system. It’s something I’m very passionate about”.

At school she was “always a bit of an eccentric. I played a lot of sport but I studied hard. I was quite lucky.

At high school I was adopted by an older group of girls who went, ‘Oh you belong with us’.

“That kind of changed my life in a way. They were in

the world in different ways so I felt more comfortable being myself.”

As a young girl she dreamed of seeing the world.

“Mum and dad got National Geographic magazine and I wanted to be a photojournalist. I thought that would be cool.”

It was in her first year of high school that she realised how much she liked playing netball and doing cross-country running.

“I was in love with cross-country running. That was what I did every day. I used to run an hour or two a day, for fun, since I was 11. I just loved getting out in the bush. With my travelling, that’s the way I discover any city that I go to. I love being a fish out of water and having to find my way around.”

Buchan started in TV hosting the weekend edition of SBS’s Toyota World Sport. “They gave me two weeks on an unpaid cadetship as a reporter and at the end of the two weeks they asked what I was going to do and I said, ‘I’m going to keep turning up until you pay me’. Six months later I was doing the weekend anchor gig.”

She went on to host international soccer news and results on the program The World Game on SBS. How was her soccer knowledge? “Going into it, it wasn’t as flash as it should have been. Being in an SBS environment with Johnny Warren and Les Murray you absorb it by osmosis.

“I’m a mad researcher. I went and watched every international game, local game, the last three World cups and I made sure that before I opened my mouth on that show I had boned up well and truly.”

In 2003 she moved to Los Angeles where she stayed for six years, working on American networks including ABC, ESPN, Fox Sports News and the Tennis Channel.

It provided extraordinary opportunities. “For

I was getting up at 4.30 doing breakfast radio. There were some great elements to that show and I have a lot of respect for Eddie. He’s got an incredible work ethic.”

She reflects on that two years and, as an AFL player might say, she was a different cat. “I’m an eccentric.

Eddie would be in the studio in his suit and tie and I’d skip in barefoot, in the middle of winter, wearing a singlet and oodles of jingly beads and bangles and scarves. I think they must have thought I was some incredibly strange flower. I guess I am.”

She believes versatility has been the key to her success.

“Australia is a relatively small media market, so you have to be Gumby-flexi-adaptable for each new role,” she says. “This gave me a very fortunate advantage when I went to America. I could work for anyone from Fox Sports to Encore Movies and I wasn’t crossing audiences. No one said, ‘You’re the sport girl. You can’t do the film show’.

“In one week I was doing pre-tournament profile chats with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the US Open, and then interviewing Kevin Costner about the resurgence of the western, before flying to Miami to give kite-surfing a go for my travel show. It’s a nutty life.”

She left Triple M in 2011 to focus on a TV career and started her own production company, called Randomonium Pictures. She has ideas for a documentary series for which she already has footage.

“I love people, I love travel, but it’s not the glamorous part of travel I like. I like the gritty real stories.”

Buchan’s variety-packed CV includes a travel show that screened on Channel Ten on Saturdays called Making Tracks for Eddie McGuire’s production company. “That was a great experience; it was lovely that Eddie trusted me with that. I got to do road trips around Australia and I did that in my holidays from the radio show.

Actionwoman Tennis Channel I had a sports travel show, which was amazing,” she says. “I went to the best sports resorts in the world and road tested the lot. I got to play tennis with Jim Courier and with Roy Emerson in Switzerland.

It was just amazing. I could not have made it up. And it was an amazing way to see the world, too.”

Her passion for rock climbing took her to some stunning locations. “I travelled with my rock climbing so I’ve seen some of the most beautiful places in the world.”

Was she scared? “No. I’m kind of fearless. You take a lot of knocks in life and it works out when you get up, so you just keep on doing it. I do a bit of teaching and mentoring and I often say, ‘Jump off the cliff and build your wings on the way down’. Even if you get blown against the rock face you can still find a way up.”

In 2008 Buchan went to London to be the Fox Sports America correspondent covering all sorts of sports, including stunt-flying. But it’s not all action adventure.

“I’ve hosted 250 episodes of a film review show (on a channel in the US) because I love my movies.”

It’s a very packed CV. “I sometimes look at my resumé and think, ‘People must think I’m full of shit’. But I’ve got all the video to prove it all.”

In mid-2009 Buchan worked on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast with Eddie McGuire, Luke Darcy and Mick Molloy. “That was a fairly big shift in gears. I kind of went from doing travel and sports and all of a sudden

She says she loves writing more than anything. “I’ve got a novel I’ve been working on for quite a long time,” she says. “I guess you could describe it as a Harry Potter for grown-ups. Somewhere between Pippi Longstocking and Harry Potter.

“I identified with Pippi Longstocking growing up. She did her own thing and was fiercely independent and I liked the kooky resilience and resistance to authority and being told what to do. I’m very much like that.”

Buchan is engaged to Ant Warne, a man she says she once hated. “We met in Melbourne at the AFL grand final three years ago. We knew each other from years ago and loathed each other. I saw him this day and thought, ‘I’ll just go and say hello’. He was ignoring me.

I thought ‘Bastard’. Being me I thought, ‘Well there’s a challenge’ … We fell in love after that.

“We’ve bought and renovated an apartment. It is very eccentric. I’ve got a buffalo skull on one wall that I collected; art from all over the world. It’s definitely a menagerie of awesome weirdness.”

Books \ KATE ATKINSON RETURNS WITH HER BEST NOVEL yET, WRITES CORRIE PERKIN

O

ur inkling that 2013 would prove a stellar year for fiction was further affirmed by the recent arrival in our shop of British writer Kate Atkinson’s new novel, Life After Life.

“Her most ambitious and most gripping work to date,” Alex Clark last month declared in The Guardian.

We agree and, like many Melbourne indie booksellers, expect keen interest among our customers.

Since 1995 when her first novel, Behind The Scenes At The Museum won the prestigious Whitbread Book of the Year award (now known as the Costa Book Awards), Atkinson has built a loyal Australian fan base.

Book clubs, in particular, enjoy her diverse range of work – from the epic, time-travelling tale of the Fairfax family in Human Croquet, to her gripping Jackson Brodie crime novels – and her stories always manage to promote good discussion over a glass of red. Life After Life is a worthy addition to this oeuvre.

What if a person could relive key moments in his or her life but, while in this curious Groundhog Day state, either actively tweak events to achieve a happier outcome, or give oneself over to happenstance?

Born on a snowy winter’s night in 1910, little Ursula Todd dies within minutes of her birth because of a doctor’s delayed arrival. In the next few pages, she is born again and this time survives because the doctor has ploughed through the snow and made it in time.

Death makes another appearance when Ursula, now five, is swept off her tiny feet while paddling in the sea.

In one chapter she drowns, in the next she is plucked from the water by a passerby. The pattern of Ursula bouncing back to life continues – after the post-World War I Spanish flu epidemic, an episode of grim domestic violence and the 1940 London Blitz.

The backbone to Ursula’s story is the Todd family – a family deeply affected by two world wars, but bound by shared experiences and their own sense of kinship.

Ursula’s parents, Sylvie and Hugh, her flamboyant aunt, Izzie, her brothers and sisters, the Todd’s maids – they provide a rich texture to this intriguing tale.

In a recent interview Atkinson described Life After Life as “my best book, and it’s the best thing I’ll ever write”. She added: “I think I was much more confident

with this book – not that I’m confident when I write – but whenever I change direction, I feel relief and a big rush of energy and, because I knew I was doing something different, the writing has had an altogether different dynamic.”

Unlike her contemporaries Julian Barnes, Martin

This new paperback by the girl who escaped Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, landed the Vogue receptionist’s job, worked her way around the glossy fashion mag world, then hit the jackpot with her old alma mater, confirms our view that worthy, thoughtful books about the Australian fashion industry will sell. \

The first of the Australian MasterChef winners, Julie Goodwin, continues to evolve as a brand, and as a home cook of substance. Her latest recipe collection reminds us of the Margaret Fulton tomes our mother used to keep in the pantry and consult when they needed the foolproof beef stroganoff or strawberry pav. Goodwin’s interpretations can’t be compared with any of the swish ooh-aah cookbooks in the market. But they are an inspiring reminder of what Australian households can produce when they have access to fresh produce, free time and a keen creative culinary streak. \

This meaty little paperback is a worthy inclusion in your luggage if you (a) love gardening and (b) are heading to Italy.

Accompanied by Primrose Bell’s colour photographs, Kirsty McLeod’s chosen gardens cover a vast range of Italian territory, climates and settings. From the beautiful gardens of Tuscany to the hilly terrains of Lombardy and Trentino, to the more harsh landscapes of Sicily, the book has it all. It’s unusual to find a romance that begins with the hero eating his lover’s ex-boyfriend. But there is little that is usual about Warm Bodies – the world’s first zombie romantic comedy (or zomromcom, to those in the know). Set in a post-apocalyptic future, this very funny and oddly sweet film sees the undead R (Nicholas Hoult) fall in love with the very alive Julie (Teresa Palmer). Falling in love isn’t the kind of thing zombies tend to do, so this simple act sends ripples through the undead community – who prefer to shuffle and groan about an abandoned airport.

Jonathan Levine’s film has great fun playing with genre expectations, so much so that it occasionally feels like a spoof. But any daftness is redeemed by its potent black humour and Hoult’s wry, self-aware narration. His R is a curious beast, learning what it means to be human again via old records (“vinyl sounds better”), while gnawing on stockpiled brains.

The film’s greatest success, however, is making its impossible premise work. The absurd romance between dead boy and living girl feels convincing, without sapping agency from the heroine. They come to feel like star cross’d lovers, kept apart by their respective tribes, and it no longer matters that one is rotting.

While Warm Bodies might occasionally try a little hard to be hip, any irony is balanced against a genuine sweetness. In short, it’s a movie with heart and (lots and lots of) brains. \

The second album from Melbourne duo (and former Perthites) Amy Franz and Hayley McKee is the best sort of throwback. Simple, fuzzy and fun, Crosswords is a reminder of the simple power of rock and roll. Swampy dirge Memphis is sinister and claustrophobic, Dragging the Fog is sparse and heartbroken, and opener Alligator is thrilling and raucous. Throughout, the duo offer a joyous mix of garage rock and 60s girl pop, best illustrated here by Heavy Step.

Their decision to cover Smokey Robinson’s You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me – a track recently covered by retronauts She & Him – seems intended as a statement. While Zooey simpered her way through a syrupy take on the classic, this version is deliberately rough and ready. This isn’t fake-Polaroid hipster retro. If it’s retro at all, it’s in the sense that it recaptures the thrill of hearing an old song for the first time. For Super Wild Horses, the past isn’t a place to take refuge. Rock music wasn’t – and isn’t – supposed to be sweet, but raw, energising and gloriously messy. Crosswords is all of those things. \ to read More reviews

Is anyone still watching this? While the first season of this David Duchovny vehicle was enjoyable enough, it’s been driving in ever-diminishing circles ever since. Now halfway through its fifth series, any potential edginess has rubbed off, leaving a grubby, salacious and not terribly funny sex comedy. In this week’s episode, Hank (Duchovny) meets a penis-obsessed lesbian, while his buddy Charlie is sleeping with his son’s nanny in his ex-wife’s bed. As you do.

Essentially, it’s part soap opera, part Carry On film and part soft porn. The unlikely scenarios might provide an uncomfortable glimpse into middle-aged male fantasies, but their execution is thoroughly juvenile. You can almost hear the sniggers every time someone says “dick”.

If there’s one reason to tune in, however, it’s Rob Lowe. Lowe has recently proved himself the comic highlight of Parks and Recreation and he’s on excellent form here as a faded rock star whose “tiny dancer” is kaput. But, really, you’d be better off just watching his segments on YouTube. \

The earnest, charming and thoroughly dreadlocked singer-songwriter is touring recent album Write It On Your Skin – his poppiest record to date. Faulkner is incredibly popular in Britain, seeing off the latest X Factor sensation to top the charts with his 2007 debut. It isn’t hard to see why. The tunes are big, the performance passionate and the production slick. Really, it’s music young listeners can play loud without upsetting their parents – belonging to the same proudly melodic and heartfelt category as Coldplay and Snow Patrol. \

how sweat it is ... comedy festival \ Gym proves a comedy tonic for Roz Hammond, writes KatHRyn KeRnoHan

O

nly a small percentage of Australian actors are fortunate enough to make a full-time living from their craft. For the rest, creative pursuits are supplemented with other work to earn a reasonable income.

In between projects in TV, film and the stage, Roz Hammond has a somewhat surprising day job. The actress, currently appearing on Shaun Micallef’s ABC comedy Mad as Hell, has worked as a personal trainer in female-only gyms for almost a decade. “It’s a fantastic part-time job, I absolutely adore it,� she says in a restaurant around the corner from ABC’s Elsternwick headquarters. “It’s such a blast to see people’s lives improve. I love seeing somebody who’s been very overweight go and buy gym gear, or watching somebody’s cholesterol levels drop. It’s just amazing.�

Hammond’s two jobs collide at this year’s Comedy Festival. Her one-woman play Gym and Tonic – her first festival show since 2006 – features eight gym-junkie characters with intertwining stories.

Writing it was easy, given the real-life characters and stories Hammond regularly met. “I’ve worked in eight or nine gyms but I always see the same type of woman re-emerge, like an overweight mother and daughter with a dependent relationship, or a well-heeled older patron who says she hates being there but secretly loves it,� she explains.

Some say hairdressers get all the good gossip – apparently fitness instructors get their share, too. “When women exercise, sweat, and are out of their comfort zones, they tell you things.

Something about their heart-rate being elevated makes them comfortable and amazing stories pour forth.�

While Hammond’s name is not a household one, chances are you’ve seen her face before.

The actress appeared in Muriel’s Wedding as Cheryl, one of the bitchy girls of Porpoise Spit making Toni Collette’s life hell, and was an ensemble cast member on two seasons of Thank God You’re Here, which averaged more than 1.5 million viewers at its peak.

She also starred in three seasons of ABC sitcom The Librarians alongside her partner, fellow performer Bob Franklin, and has worked on several of Micallef’s projects over the past 15 years.

In person, she’s friendly and talks about her craft seriously, dressed in a neat pinstripe shirt. It’s a far cry from the characters she played on the previous night’s Mad as Hell, including over-the-top fashion

Hammond grew up in Perth and had “quite a conservative upbringing”. It was a creative household – her parents met in a university production (“dad was Romeo and mum was Juliet’s mum, which I found quite hilarious”) and there was usually “a great costume box” lying around.

She left school early in her final year – “school just wasn’t for me” – and was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at 18.

The postgraduation plan was to move to Sydney and try to find acting work.

“But then I came to Melbourne, caught a tram up St Kilda Road to the Queen Victoria Market and decided I wanted to move here.”

With no family or friends in Melbourne, Hammond made the daunting move across the Nullarbor at 21.

Work was scarce for a while, until she read the script for Muriel’s Wedding and fell in love.

“The minute I read it, I knew I had to be part of it.”

on sketch show Full Frontal, where she met Micallef.

Although her most recognisable roles are comedies, Hammond has appeared in dramatic productions on TV and the stage, including the Melbourne Theatre Company.

“You can get pigeon-holed as just doing comedy in this country, whereas in the UK you might just be seen as an actor,” she says.

“But I do get offered the odd dramatic role and I always jump at them.”

Next year, the 43 year-old will study international development at RMIT. “I’m a mad studier now; it gives me great satisfaction.

We’ve got no children, so I’ll spend time learning.”

Hammond and Franklin, her partner of 16 years, live in Mordialloc, where their backyard is “like an institution”.

“I’m rehearsing in one corner and he’s rehearsing in the other corner,” she says, laughing.

“We love movies, cooking and we have a big veggie patch. We’re real home bodies.”

Acting work will occupy Hammond’s next few months – after the Comedy Festival and Mad as Hell, she will appear in a Joanna Murray-Smith play in Perth.

But she knows her other job will be there when she needs it.

“I’m quite content with how my career has gone so far,” she says.

“I’ve been through long periods without much acting work, but I can go and work in a gym and I love that, too.

Car companies have lots of marketing ideas but the most effective way to get brands and products known is to have lots of them out there on the road. Car marketers have always assumed that when people keep seeing them they figure lots are being sold and thus lots of buyers like them. Now research published in the December issue of The Journal of Marketing Research backs this up.

It’s why most car companies give at least some of their employees deals on cars and, depending on just how visible the company wants its products to be, these deals can be offered to senior executives only, or everyone.

Gilbee says that despite his struggles with injury in his final season, that wasn’t what led to his retirement.

“Playing finals footy is what it’s all about, and I got to play in 11 finals for three wins, but I guess you play to win premierships and I never got to have a crack at one,” he said.

It’s that drive that still keeps him going, and what will be such a valuable part of Old Scotch’s chances of repeating last year’s finals appearance.

“You’re a long time retired and I think I can still play for another five or six years. I still love the game,” Gilbee said.

“I haven’t won a premiership since juniors, and I understand it’s been a long time since Scotch has won one so it would be great to be a part of their next one.” \

ar from the bright lights and the big stadiums, Box Hill South’s Lindsay Gilbee has found his way to Old Scotch Football Club for this season, and couldn’t be happier.

The former Western Bulldogs playmaker, who retired from the AFL at the end of an injury-riddled 2012, says he’s looking forward to getting stuck into his first season of amateur football and his new life in Melbourne’s east.

“To be honest I’m absolutely loving it down there,” Gilbee said. “I’m looking forward to just getting out and having a kick, being part of the club, and being able to sit down and have a beer after the game, which will be a nice change.”

As a veteran of 206 AFL games for the Dogs over 11 seasons, Gilbee, 32, attracted interest from cashed-up country clubs, as well as fellow amateur club University Blues, but ultimately it was his friendships at Old Scotch that sealed the deal.

“I’ve got a great relationship with [Old Scotch president] Dave McCleary, and also having one of my best mates, Ed Barlow, down there has been fantastic,” Gilbee said.

Barlow and Gilbee have stayed in touch since they played together during Barlow’s brief time at the Bulldogs in 2011.

Barlow also spent four years with Sydney Swans and will be another valuable on-field asset for Old Scotch.

With his body freshened up, Gilbee looks certain to be used as one of the Cardinals’ key midfielders, after being trialled in several positions over the past month.

“I took about 3½ months off last year, which I really needed cause the body hasn’t had a long break in a long time,” he said.

esigner collaborations are the catchphrase of the decade, with companies recognising the power of a personality attached to their brand. Whether it’s celebrity chefs designing their own range of cookware, interior stylists developing a range of paints or fashion designers, such as Victoria Beckham for Range Rover, turning their hand to designing luxury car interiors, collaborations are a marketer’s dream.

his house, built about 10 years ago, is a haven in an area bustling with activity. With the council offices, library, Walker Park and the Nunawading art and craft market (open on the fourth Sunday of every month) all nearby, there is no shortage of local “happenings” here.

Behind its formal brick façade, however, the house has a serene quietness, thanks to a spot in this cul-de-sac in the Knightsbridge Estate, and finely crafted double-glazed windows installed throughout.

The façade has touches of Victorian detail, such as light-coloured quoins on the walls and wrap-around verandahs (with turned posts) downstairs and upstairs. Such details are a rare treat this far east.

Nunawading’s residential development didn’t really kick off until after the Second World War, well beyond the Victorian era of architecture.

While inner-suburban Melbourne received the full treatment of terrace housing in the late 1800s, Nunawading, and its surrounding areas were largely made up of orchards well into the 20th century.

Nevertheless, the vendors liked the Victorian style, and were determined to bring a touch of it to the suburb they loved.

Tradition gives way to modernity inside the house, but it’s modernity with a practical touch. The downstairs areas are zoned as living areas (dining, family and sitting rooms, office and study), while the upstairs is zoned mainly for rest and recreation.

A long entry hallway has bifold doors opening on the right to an office or multipurpose room with independent access to the outside. The study, with a short flight of stairs leading to the garage, is also to the right of this hallway.
