40 years of dedication Lorraine Casey is one of Melbourne’s longest-serving night owls, this year celebrating her 40th anniversary at the Box Hill Hospital – the past 38 as a night-shift emergency nurse. Ms Casey usually wakes about 4pm, starts her shift at 9.30pm, and clocks off at 7.30am next morning.

It means she has slept through numerous grand finals and Melbourne Cups and been kept awake by people mowing their lawns at 2pm, unaware that it’s her slumber time. “I’m fortunate that on my days off I can make the transition back to normal hours very easily,” she says. Ms Casey says she still enjoys the work thanks to the camaraderie in the emergency department.

box hill The Box Hill RSL Bowls Club fears it could be turfed out of its Poplar Street home if the state government backs a proposal to acquire its greens to develop the Box Hill TAFE. The revelations, contained in secret cabinet documents leaked to the media last month, come as the club is about to complete a $20,000 renovation of its clubrooms.

The TAFE also wants a feasibility study for the Ward Motors premises, next door to its Elgar Road campus on Whitehorse Road.

Bowls has been played in Poplar Street since the 1960s and the greens were used by the former Box Hill Bowls Club until 2009 when it merged with the RSL Bowls Section. The section now has about 250 members and runs competitions throughout the week.

Club chairman Ray Spokas said the club felt particularly vulnerable because its long-term lease with the council had expired and it has been paying its rent monthly.

He said the club would not have renovated its clubrooms if it knew the TAFE was investigating buying the land.

“We’re also putting money aside towards replacing our two greens because they normally last about eight years. We’ll be replacing those in the next couple of years and

we don’t want to spend $200,000 if there’s no longevity for it,” Mr Spokas said.

He said the club had no plans for an alternate home since the council rejected a proposal to turn disused tennis courts in Box Hill Gardens into bowling greens last year.

Box Hill Institute chief executive officer John Maddock said the TAFE had not formally spoken to Whitehorse Council or the bowls club about the site because the leaked document was never meant to be made public.

The in-confidence document mostly detailed how job and funding cuts would be implemented by 15 TAFEs adapting to proposed changes to their funding model.

Mr Maddock said the institute wanted to expand its nursing and electro-technology programs, but wouldn’t act “like a predator”.

“I don’t think anyone would be surprised by us saying that should the occupants vacate the premises, we would be very interested in government support to acquire it,” he said.

Whitehorse Council chief executive officer Noelene Duff said the Poplar Street greens were a “strategic” site. “It is significant to council in terms of the link to the corner of the TAFE site and being the entry point to Box Hill,” she said. \ KRISTIAN SILVA ksilva@mmpgroup.com.au

POLICE will step up patrols in the Box Hill Gardens area after two violent attacks in September. Police praised a group of fitness enthusiasts after they restrained a man brandishing a knife in the gardens about 6pm on September 26. Marc Jarvis and two of his bootcamp class stepped in to save a man who was being attacked.

Box Hill’s Detective Senior Constable Gerry Muileman said the victim injured a hand in the attack. He said a 31-year-old man from Blackburn South was arrested at the scene and charged with armed robbery and assault. He was remanded and will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 14.

In an unrelated incident on September 27, a 14-year-old male from Doncaster was charged and remanded following an incident where a 32-year-old man broke an arm and needed surgery to save a severely lacerated finger.

Detective Senior Constable Muileman said a group of youths confronted the 32-year-old and 29-year-old victims and one offender was carrying a knife. The 14-year-old will face the Melbourne Children’s Court on October 16.

Sergeant Michael Hastings from Box Hill police said the gardens were generally considered safe, but people should take care.

ReZOne nO GO A 52-apartment complex in Mitcham was rejected by the Whitehorse council last month, although councillors fear the decision could be overturned at VCAT. The planning proposal to rezone the 9240 square metre vacant block at 520 Mitcham Road is the fifth planning application in eight years that the council has rejected for the site. The council received 40 objections from residents.

Cr Ben Stennett said: “This application is ridiculous, but given some VCAT decisions in the recent past, you never know (if it will be overturned).” \ sLOw LAne Drivers can expect delays on Middleborough Road as work begins to upgrade the intersection at Katrina Street in Blackburn North. Improvements will be made to line-marking, signs and traffic-signals to improve safety and traffic flow. “Several bus routes travel through this intersection and the upgrade will ease traffic congestion by giving priority to buses,” Mitcham MLA Dee Ryall said. “Easing congestion at this intersection, particularly during peak hours, will be of enormous benefit to all road users.”

Two of the offenders were carrying firearms and one used a baseball bat to break the front window. They then stole cash and left through the broken window.

The offenders are described as in their 20s and of slim to medium build, wearing dark pants, hooded tops, balaclavas and gloves. \

Candidate denies loan Claim A Manningham council candidate has claimed he borrowed $250 from a rival to fund his nomination for the upcoming elections.

John Mitakakis claimed he accepted a cash loan from fellow Koonung Ward candidate Stephen O’Brien on September 24, after the two had agreed to exchange top preferences.

Mr O’Brien denied any money changed hands. He said the allegations were ‘‘just slanderous’’.

“This is purely designed to hurt my campaign,” Mr O’Brien said.

Mr O’Brien said the two had a preference agreement, which he broke to put Mr Mitakakis sixth on his how-to-vote card. ‘‘I realised he didn’t understand the Koonung planning issues as well as I first thought and changed my preferences. I went to see him to tell him, but he wasn’t home,’’ Mr O’Brien said. ‘‘If he’s got an allegation, he should go to the Victorian Electoral Commission.”

Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate, which takes complaints made to the VEC, has not received a complaint regarding the Manningham election.

The three candidates who preferenced Mr O’Brien second – Anna Chen, Magdi Khalil and John Perosa – said they had not received any payment offers from other candidates.

Mr Mitakakis said the money wasn’t in exchange for preferences.

He said he couldn’t afford to pay the $250 fee by the September 25 nomination closing date. Mr Mitakakis promised to disclose the loan to the Victorian Electoral Commission after the election and pay it back if he took at least four per cent of the Koonung votes, the figure needed for a refund on a candidate nomination.

Jumper washers at the Blackburn Football Club could expect to have an easier time next season, after the Whitehorse council committed $458,000 to install irrigation at Morton Park.

The council selected its tender last month and will install an irrigation system on the western oval to fix major water-logging issues.

Blackburn junior president Craig Smith said sections of the ground were ‘‘potentially dangerous’’ and welcomed the funding commitment.

The club’s membership has doubled in the past five years to about 450 players. ‘‘In the winter, the ground gets waterlogged to the extent that we had to cancel training several times last year. There were four weeks where we couldn’t use it for training,’’ Mr Smith said. ‘‘We believed it really needed to be upgraded for us to deliver our program.’’

have been travelling around Australia recently and have been amazed by how many people are concerned at the plight of whales.

While this is understandable, it astounds me that millions of Australian sheep and cows are left to suffer in the Middle East with government support. Thousands of sheep shipped from Australia to slaughter in the Middle East were recently left stranded aboard their vessels – struggling to survive in the suffocating heat – after being turned away by officials in Bahrain and Kuwait. One ship remained in the waters off Bahrain for almost two weeks after a journey that had already taken more than a month before the animals were offloaded in Pakistan, where the sheep were “culled” (that’s a nice way of saying killed without stunning) because they were found to have salmonella and actinomyces bacteria, and possibly anthrax.

Then you have discarded farmed cows exported and dying in large numbers due to neglect in Egypt (half have been stranded for more than

six weeks) due to a disagreement over the use of hormones. If such atrocities happened to a whale, the entire country would be up in arms.

Every year, millions of discarded sheep endure what can only be described as hell at sea. These are not the first cases in which sheep and cows have been nightmarishly stranded, and unless live exports end, they won’t be the last. So, yes, “save the whales”, but please also save the sheep – end live exports now.

Victorians will be worse off if we have to start paying a new tax on our rates and our insurance premiums do not come down.

The Baillieu government has bungled this change by introducing the new tax without properly ensuring that the former FSL was abolished and must ensure that Victorians are not slugged with additional costs.

Residents have contacted me to voice their concerns about a dramatic rise in their FSL payments on their most recent insurance bills.

Others are concerned that they may be charged twice – once on their insurance and again on their local government rates – in the same financial year.

Local communities can band together, however, and support their little shops and boutiques. I is a bitterly cold morning in the Macedon Ranges but the staff at Team Williams seem oblivious to the weather as they go through their daily routines preparing likely contenders for this year’s spring carnival.

Not all will make it – that’s the nature of horse racing – but there is no doubt that they are unlikely to get a better opportunity than at Macedon Lodge, the state-of-the-art training facility set up by Lloyd Williams, one of Australia’s best-known and most successful thoroughbred owners over more than half a century.

“This place is the result of 50 years of planning,” says Nick Williams, who is acting as racing manager for his father, although he stresses it is very much a team effort at Macedon Lodge.

Williams, through his private company Hudson Conway, bought Macedon Lodge about five years ago. The 120-hectare property was originally developed by the late Kurt Stern, and the New Zealand mare Ethereal was stabled there when she won the 2001 Caulfield and Melbourne cups.

It was then regarded as a showplace training facility, which has only been enhanced since Team Williams took over, extending the tracks and adding every available facility for the welfare of its equine residents.

undercover water-walker, four walking machines, a horse shower and overhead heating for horses with back problems.

The main gallops are on two Pro-Ride synthetic tracks, one of which is a straight 1600 metres and, for a bit of variety, there are several other tracks winding through hills and trees.

The main stable block features double-size boxes, which Nick Williams believes were originally designed by Stern to be transformed into motel units if Macedon Lodge failed as a training facility.

“They’ve even got the little trapdoors in front where you could put breakfast trays,” he says.

New staff quarters have been added to the complex, which has about 35 people looking after 80 horses. “A lot of the staff have been with us for years,” Williams says, which in itself is a little unusual in an industry known for the transitory nature of its employees.

“Dad has always said it takes 5000 man hours to get a business right but in racing it takes at least twice as long and there are no guarantees of success.’’

Conway in 1986 and the establishment of Melbourne’s Crown Casino. Yet his passion has always been horseracing, although apart from a recent visit to Caulfield to watch three of his horses trial, he has not attended a city race meeting for about 10 years.

Always a forward thinker, Williams sometimes became frustrated with the workings of racing’s officialdom but, during a relatively brief stint on the Victoria Racing Club committee when the VRC was still the controlling body, he left his mark by organising the purchase of the high-school property adjacent to Flemington racecourse, which is now the headquarters of Racing Victoria.

Since the sale of Crown to James Packer, Williams has adopted a low public profile while keeping a close interest in all racing matters as he continues his quest to win only the best races, most notably the Emirates Melbourne Cup. This has resulted in 43-year-old Nick Williams becoming the public face of Team Williams, and he shares the passions of his father.

“I suppose I didn’t have much choice,” Nick says as he scans the walls of a picture gallery in the office area at Macedon Lodge.

With a few notable exceptions – Lloyd Williams stopped collecting pictures of his winners in 1996 – there are probably

“We haven’t actually counted them but there have been between 80 and 100 group race winners,” Nick says.

The first Lloyd Williams-owned group winner was the filly Cautious Sue, trained by the late Noel Kelly, in the group 2 Kewney Stakes at Flemington in 1969 and he admits to being “hooked” ever since.

Whether they admit it or not, it is the dream of every racehorse owner to at least have a runner in the Melbourne Cup, but Williams was determined to take the dream to the next level and has channelled his efforts into winning the race. The dream became a reality with the success of the Tommy Smith-trained Just A Dash in 1981, although the horse, in the ownership of Williams and two good friends, George Frew and Tommy Pettiona, carried Smith’s colours of dark-blue and green stripes rather than his now-famous colours of navy blue, white arm bands and cap.

he move of the stable from Flemington to Macedon was celebrated with the win of Efficient – trained by Graeme Rogerson and ridden by Michael Rodd – in the 2007 Melbourne Cup. The previous spring the New Zealand-bred Efficient had given Williams his second Victoria Derby, a race he had won in 1993 with his champion three-year-old Mahogany, arguably his best horse, although he never ran in the Melbourne Cup. Mahogany also won the Australian Jockey Club’s Australian Derby in 1994 and was voted Australia’s racehorse of the year for the 1993-94 season. Later in his career, Mahogany’s versatility was highlighted by his dual wins in the group 1 Lightning Stakes over 1000 metres at Flemington.

It is remarkable and a tribute to the attention by the staff at Macedon Lodge that the now nine-year-old Efficient is again in the mix for a start in the Melbourne Cup. Because of his problems over the years, the grey gelding has raced only 29 times, but there was a glimpse of his former greatness earlier this year when he finished second in the Sydney Cup. Another of the VIP horses at Macedon Lodge is 10-year-old Zipping, now in retirement, who also never won a Melbourne Cup but always ran well in the race and won four consecutive Sandown Classics, which is now known as the Zipping Classic.

Since he first arrived at Williams’ Flemington stables, Zipping has been looked after by Jason Chandler and the gelding is a favourite of all the staff at Team Williams.

The resident trainer at Macedon Lodge is Robert Hickmott, who has been with Team Williams for about 11 years and took over the role of head trainer about three years ago.

After having a high of 20 entries in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, Team Williams has only six nominations this year, but they include two of the top fancies in early markets in Green Moon and Mourayan, both imports from Ireland, and another highly promising stayer in New Zealand-bred Excluded.

Green Moon showed he has more than a touch of class with his second to Southern Speed in last year’s Caulfield Cup and he appears to have come back even better this spring.

Williams is considering taking on the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, a race he has yet to win, with Green Moon on his way to the Melbourne Cup as Team Williams cranks up for another exciting spring carnival. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

fritters but they would be more accurately described as battered salt cod. They are whole chunks of rubbery, perhaps overcooked, cod cased in golden-fried and frilly batter. They look better than they taste.

On the other hand, lamb filo cigars taste better than they look. They’re thin and compact, more panatella than Churchill, and packed with a spiced mince of slow-roasted lamb fragrant with cumin, coriander and cinnamon. Pine nuts bring texture; toasted pastry and sesame seeds add an adult smokiness. The two cigars are presented in a white ramekin and cost $10, which is not outrageous but doesn’t seem great value either.

That said, the food menu is really reasonably priced overall, and the wine list isn’t bad either.

There’s a fair choice of local and imported styles in the $40-$60 bracket but also the odd flight of fancy such as a $300-plus grand cru from St Emilion.

Which seems a bit extravagant for an otherwise humble neighbourhood bistro, but I guess it’s nice to have the choice. If you prefer to drink your own top-shelf drop, you can BYO weeknights for $20 a cork/screwtop.

From the quartet of tagines we choose the veal with cauliflower and sultanas. It arrives in a smart, charcoal-and-red version of the traditional conical baking dish. Plump veal pieces are alternately tender and tougher but, combined with cauliflower, eggplant, pine nuts and sultanas – and a zesty tabouleh on the side – it’s a winning combination all up.

Messora’s spaghetti, daubed in a dense sauce of crushed walnuts and anchovies, is also a bit special.

We’re served standard spaghetti rather than the advertised bucatini but it’s cooked pleasantly firm and the nuttiness and saltiness of the sauce chimes with the parmesan grated through it. It’s so deceptively meaty and such a beautiful bolognese colour that it’s like eating I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-ragu.

Desserts are mostly pastries – Portuguese tarts, apple tart, Lebanese semolina and yoghurt cake – so we go with the flow and order churros with crema catalana. The fluted doughnut sticks are piping hot and crying out to be dipped into the small pot of sweet, sticky, sinful custard. It’s a wonderful way to finish although, like the lamb cigars, the plate seems overpriced at $15 for two dunkin’ doughnuts. But after the feast we’ve just put away, we couldn’t have eaten another thing anyway. \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au

is a dark and stormy night when I first drop by Sartago restaurant in Richmond.

The simple, plate-glass frontage on Church Street suggests a past life as a takeaway café (you can almost picture where the bain marie used to be) but Sartago’s mood lighting, those sleek bioethanol burners and the theatrical floor staff clad in one-shoulder, toga-style aprons lend the space a distinct, eclectic personality. (There’s another dining room upstairs that would be ideal for big group bookings.)

Messora’s extensive menu is even more eclectic than his interiors. It offers a sartago, or frying pan, of Mediterranean cuisines that promises to transport the diner from Beirut to Barcelona.

Patrons can graze across the countries or confine themselves to single-origin eating. One night you might pop in for Italian – start with bianchetti fritti (fried whitebait) before spaghetti and/or a 12-hour roasted porchetta. On subsequent visits you could plump for Portuguese, go full-on French or give Greece a chance.

In less able hands such ambitions might translate to confusion in the kitchen but Messora has a decent grasp of pan-Med principles. The menu’s not without its failings but mostly his dishes are as satisfying on the plate as they sound on the card, whether we’re talking a Provençal bouillabaisse or a Valencian-style, surf-and-turf paella made to his uncle’s recipe.

Dishes are grouped under broad headings such as Palate Ticklers (bar snacks basically – nuts, olives and stuff) and Mediterranean Flights (aka entrées).

From the latter comes a very cute miniature cast-iron casserole in lime green that’s filled to the brim with lightly battered whitebait. The fried fry are a touch on the soggy side but nicely seasoned and served with a saffron mayo.

Sizzled pork spare ribs are piled on an earthenware dish with fresh rosemary and glistening grill marks. I prefer rib meat to fall off the bone rather than having to gnaw at it.

An hour or two of slow roasting would have delivered the desired texture but, again, the flavours are satisfying.

Sartago’s sourdough focaccia is a lovely surprise.

It’s seasoned with crunchy sea salt and rosemary leaves and then baked with a dash of olive oil. In a word, mmm.

Bottling the bubbles

The best Australian sparkling producers use Champagne’s méthode traditionelle technique, which means bottling the wine, then inducing a secondary fermentation in the bottle to create bubbles. The wine is then left to age in the bottle (usually 18 months to three years) with the fermentation’s spent yeast cells, known as lees, to develop complexity.

It is then disgorged to remove the yeast before being sealed with a cork and sent out into the world.

“You can’t make really great sparkling without going down the méthode traditionelle path,” says Domaine Chandon winemaker Dan Buckle. “I think there are flavour elements that come from the traditonelle method that are absolutely essential to make great sparkling drinks. When you think of the brioche-doughy-biscuity characters and, from a textural point of view to the way it makes the bead behave, you just can’t get that another way.” \

When I first tried an Arras EJ Carr, in a blind tasting that included grand marque Champagnes no less, it more than held its own. It’s fresh as a daisy, with bright, complex strawberry, stonefruit, citrus, almond biscuit and honey aromas.

It’s a similar story on the intense but mellow palate, with lemon – juice and zest – a driving force.

Superfine bead, gorgeous mouthfeel and a chalky grip; it’s all there to enjoy. Amazing length and the bottle was finished far too soon.

It’s exclusive to Dan Murphy’s, where I recently saw it priced at $36.95. Bright stone fruit, cherry, yeast and lemon aromas have a fair amount of complexity.

In the mouth there’s powerful flavours of lemon zest, grilled nuts and a bit of sweet honey biscuit flavour.

A zippy wine that was my pick in the Duperrey range, which includes a NV rosé and a 2005 vintage release, it has a smooth mousse, grippy, chalky acidity and refreshing, lengthy finish.

It says non-vintage on the label, but the bottles that are starting to hit the shelves of your local are a blend of predominantly 2009 base wines from the King Valley. It spends two years on lees. Pretty aromas of apple, pear, strawberry, yeast and a lick of honey are complex and bright and the wine is fresh and lively on the palate. A vigorous mousse and smooth texture complements the refreshing, zippy acidity and light grip. Length is impressive, too.

he spring racing carnival is an intense experience. In the next couple of weeks we will be inundated with how-tos, celebrity tips, and dos and don’ts from just about anyone and everyone.

We will reach exhaustion point by about the second week but we will be drawn to the excitement like moths to a flame.

Top of the list is always the headpiece, followed by the dress, shoes and accessories. And who can forget or ignore the all-important tan, or lack of.

Make-up, from my years of observating the races, always seems to be an after thought.

the apprentice jockeys \ Jake Noonan and Katelyn Mallyon talk to aNdrew ryaN.

D

espite being teenagers, 19-year-old Jake Noonan and 18-year-old Katelyn Mallyon have shared an extraordinary amount of life experience. Both top apprentice jockeys, they virtually grew up side by side – a friendship as children that has blossomed into something more as they have become older. Both their fathers are racehorse trainers, they both burst into racing with a flurry of winners, having both won the apprentice jockeys premiership – Noonan in 2010-11 and Mallyon in 2011-12 – and they are dedicated and passionate about horse racing and their careers in the industry. They have also both recently survived horror race falls. Even in that unfortunate experience there have been parallels. “We both landed on our heads,” says Mallyon with a wry smile.

It is this last shared experience that has probably brought them closer as Noonan, who fell in a race at Flemington in May last year and was sidelined for six months with a brain injury, helps Mallyon through the pain and anguish she is still experiencing since she was placed into an induced coma after falling at Flemington in May this year.

Now Noonan’s support has become even more important for Mallyon as she has just found out that she must have further surgery, three months in a back brace and another year on the sidelines if she is to return to what she loves.

Noonan was riding in Queensland when Mallyon had her fall and immediately rushed back to Melbourne to be at her side. He has gone every step of the way with her since.

Noonan: “The hardest thing about it is when you go out on such a high note – when I fell, I was flying, I went out on such a high and so did Katelyn, like she was leading apprentice, and you return and it doesn’t kick off where you left off really, it’s pretty hard to cope with mentally,” says Noonan.

“Obviously I can’t see into the future for Kate but it’s a pretty tough time and working through it and trying to stay positive is difficult. I haven’t reached where I was before the fall yet but I’ve got to keep chipping away to get where I was, if not further, but it’s pretty hard mentally because you go from one minute being on top of the world, the next minute back down to the bottom again and just working your way up there is tricky and mentally pretty tough.”

From neck to toe Noonan’s body came through his fall with barely a bruise, but landing on his head put him in a coma for several days and has taken longer to get right.

At the time of the fall he was working with leading trainer Peter Moody, but nothing stands still in the racing game.

“I was kind of replaced pretty quickly – being such a top stable, he can’t wait for me to recover, he’s got horses going around every day,” Noonan says with candour. “I still poke my head in the door and he still throws me a ride every now and then but I’m not as highly involved as I was.

“It’s not easy to find metropolitan winners, especially in Melbourne, the competition we’ve got down here, you’re not riding against the best riders in Australia, you’re riding against the best riders in the world practically.

“Trying to compete against them with an A (for apprentice) next to your name and only three years’ experience – whether you’ve got the same amount of ability – they always look past you because you’re competing against people who have been riding for decades longer than you.

“You need to find a stable, you need to find a horse that can kick you off and get you going, and you need people to start noticing you – it’s tricky but even with my 1.5 kilo claim, with the top weights going up, when they want to claim they want

to take three kilos off so all the new kids are getting a good go, whereas I’ve had my time so the 1.5 kilos isn’t doing me many favours, I’m practically looked on as a senior anyway.”

Noonan comes out of his time as an apprentice in March, or after his next 11 city winners, whichever comes first, and he’s determined to succeed.

“I’m not locked into any big stable so I try and poke my head in the door of the smaller types of trainers that have got good horses,” he says. “David Brideoake, for instance, I make sure I put my head in the door there as he’s got that Dance With Her that I won the Golden Mile on and the Pakenham Cup and I know she’s going to be going for a few major races this spring.”

oonan came relatively late to racing, like his father, Tony, who took up his successful training career after several years as a school teacher.

“I thought I was going to be a footballer or a pro skateboarder,” Jake Noonan says.

“Footy looked a massive chance there for a while. I was playing for South Mornington, I was really good at footy but got to 16 and I hadn’t grown since I was 13. I was starting to get thrown around like a rag doll, it wasn’t working out.

“I’m more frightened of a 100-kilo bloke running at me than sitting on a 500-kilo horse.”

Noonan, unusually for a jockey, has his VCE and could go to university if racing suddenly went pear-shaped but the industry is now his love and he has set his goals.

“The best thing about the job is that it’ll take you all over the world – Europe Asia, would love to ride at both. Hong Kong would be the grand final … that’s where all the money is, that’s where the best of the best are.

“And, definitely, I’d look at training one day – as stupid as it sounds as people have been telling me how hard it is.”

Mallyon: “Having someone close to me who has just been through the same sort of thing has been a huge help,” Mallyon says.

All she knows about her fall was what others have told her and what she has felt (i.e. pain) herself. “I fractured my cheekbone, lacerated my spleen, broke my nose and compress-fractured my T6 vertebrae,” she says. She also suffered a heavy concussion and when she came out of hospital she was wearing a back brace.

Mallyon has been keeping her distance from the horses as she works her way back to fitness but it hasn’t been easy – and that personal version of purgatory has now been extended for 12 months.

This new bout of surgery will see her back in the brace for another three months. “I’m not likely to be getting dressed up while I’ve got a brace on my back,” she says.

But she already has a plan. “I’ll have to do something, it’s too long not to, I might do something like a vet nurse course, or following a vet around and helping out.”

Whatever happens, Mallyon is determined to stay in the industry – even being picked off the street to do some modelling when she was 15 hasn’t diverted her from her course – but then, racing is in her blood.

Mallyon is the granddaughter of former top jockey Mick Mallyon, who won three Caulfield Cups. Father Brett rode, as did her mother, Mary, who has a metropolitan winner to her

name at Moonee Valley, while brother Andrew, 23, is forging his career in the saddle. So she is well aware of the pifalls.

“It’s the only fall I’ve had. I had a few falls off the ponies and in trackwork – I broke my jaw coming off a pony once when I was 10 or 11 years old – but I always thought I’d be a jockey,” she says.

“I’ve only been riding for a year and a quarter, won the premiership, still got a two-kilo claim in town.

“So as long as the surgery goes well and the screws and plate come out good I’ll be trying my best to get back.

“I’ve spoken to Damien Oliver because I was a mess when I first found out. I thought I was going to hear good news then and – I was happy enough to get the surgery done but I couldn’t get my head around it so I had to speak to Brett Scott, Damien Oliver and they talked me through it and made me feel a lot better about doing it.

“The doctors all make it doom and gloom and say you’ll be out for a year, you’ll be in a brace, there’s a chance you’ll come out of surgery and you’ll be a paraplegic and you’re just like – geez! I had to be in the brace for three months when I had the fall but I was out of it in six weeks so they always tell you the worst, but this time I don’t have to have broken bones mend so I’d say I won’t be in it for so long.

“It’ll be just because of the screws and the plate has to set.

The screws have to be in for a year but I’ll be back then.”

When Mallyon finally makes that climb back into the saddle, she’ll have Noonan there ready to support. He’s seen how hard it has been for his girlfriend, not only to deal with her injuries, but also to keep her distance from the industry she loves.

“Once she gets on a horse – like when you’re not touching them and that – you can live without them, but first day of trackwork she’ll be that hungry I can tell her just from going through it myself,” he says.

“I’ve been to the races every now and again when dad’s had a runner or when I take ‘J’ there,” Mallyon said. “I’ll always work in the industry. I love riding work and if they say I can’t ride again and if I can’t ride work, well – but I honestly think that’s not the case. The surgery is only minor they tell me, but it’s still surgery and they’re still working very close to your spinal cord, but they are good at what they do.

“I’d like to follow Pop and win a Caulfield Cup. I’d really like to ride a city treble because I haven’t done that – but my goal is to just get back to riding and back to where I was.”

Despite Mallyon’s pending absence, she and Noonan are to be two of the faces of the spring carnival, with their stylish and coiffed images about to appear in advertising all over the city – the pictures might be posed but you can be assured there is nothing of the poser about the couple depicted.

hen it comes to knowing what to wear to the Melbourne spring racing carnival this year, the key to a winning outfit depends on your ability to steer your own style. Choose a dress that suits your body shape, avoid fashion trends that don’t suit you and carefully consider your key message, keeping elegance at the top of your list.

The spring season is all about bold colour and printed fabrics, with many designers opting for 1950s and ’60s silhouettes, empire-line and shift dresses that are easy to wear. For his remarkable negotiation skills, Banjo’s remuneration comes in Flemington’s most cherished currency. He gets to smell (and eat) the roses.

Between races, Lettsy allows him to nibble on the David Austins, assisting the Victoria Racing Club’s gardeners in keeping their rose population under control. The more roses Banjo munches in the spring, the less dead-heads they’ll need to lop in summer.

The accolades for Banjo keep rolling in. A few months ago he was awarded what amounts to a lifetime achievement award when the Australian Stockhorse Society announced Banjo as its Horse of the Year at a presentation ceremony in Melbourne.

any would argue that the 1993 Melbourne Cup was the most significant in the race’s history. It really started something.

That year saw a breakthrough win by a northern hemisphere-trained horse – in cold, driving rain, Irish stayer Vintage Crop started the trickle of international visitors that has since become a flood. But the Irish victory wasn’t the only first during that carnival.

In 1993, Flemington racegoers first set eyes upon the equine personality who would become the turf’s most unlikely cult figure. That folk hero is an Australian stockhorse named Trewarrick Impulse.

Haven’t heard of him? Well, you and I know him as Banjo.

The then five-year-old made his debut during the ’93 Cup carnival as the silent partner of what is undoubtedly the Flemington crowd’s favourite duo – “Banjo and Lettsy”.

When master horseman John Patterson introduced former champion jockey John Letts to Trewarrick Impulse before the ’93 carnival, Lettsy admitted he wouldn’t be able to get his tongue around the name.

“Patto” replied that Lettsy could call the bay gelding whatever he wanted. “Well you’re Patterson, so I’ll call him Banjo,” Lettsy said.

Thus began a marriage made in horse heaven.

This Melbourne Cup carnival will be the 19th in succession that Banjo and Lettsy have performed together.

Lettsy’s horseback interviews with the winning jockey, thrusting a hand-held microphone as close as he can to the panting rider’s face, are an undoubted highlight of every carnival.

The former champion jockey’s effortless good humour belies the skill required to simultaneously handle a horse and elicit responses from an exhausted athlete. Despite the balancing act, Lettsy seldom fails to capture the exhilaration that the jockey feels.

Lettsy and Banjo are inseparable during the Flemington carnival, but their relationship is by no means monogamous.

Besides carrying Lettsy around Flemington in Channel Seven’s colours for the Melbourne Cup carnival, Banjo does the job for Channel Nine at the Caulfield Cup carnival and on Cox Plate day, with Claire Bird as the interviewer.

Banjo is an equine Eddie McGuire. This horse’s skills are bigger than just one network.

Horse and rider soon realised who was boss. Lettsy bowed to Banjo’s demands.

According to Lettsy, the combination works beautifully so long as everyone understands that Banjo is the No.1 attraction, and that he must go onto the track first.

On a professional level, Lettsy does all the talking. But Banjo is more than a supporting cast. He is the one who establishes terms with the winning horse, rubs shoulders with large and small, and puts Lettsy in position to ask the excited hoop how he feels.

“That’s Banjo’s genius,” says Lettsy. “He rolls in alongside the winning horse and somehow puts it at ease. I’m under no illusion. If Banjo could talk, I’d be out of a job.”

Rarely do winning horses object. An exception was after the 2010 Melbourne Cup when Americain attempted to bite

t 24, Banjo’s working days are nearing an end. “He can’t go on forever,” Lettsy admits. “The minute he shows any soreness, he’ll go home to those two lovely ladies to enjoy his retirement. But I’d love to see him go for another two carnivals and chalk up 20 years.

That would be a fantastic achievement for him.

“I don’t know what I’ll do when my old mate can’t go round any more, though.”

Banjo spends most of the year spelling at a property near Warrnambool, where his two ladies-in-waiting, Mary and Karen, give him a life of luxury. In the first week of October, Patto brings Banjo to his Flemington stables to prepare him for the rigours of spring.

It’s a ritual that horse and owner have observed for 19 years, without interruption. Even after all these years, Lettsy says he is continually amazed by how Banjo’s ears are always pricked and his manner friendly.

He’s such a unique talent that he crosses channels, as well as riders and racetracks.

Banjo works three of Melbourne’s metropolitan tracks every spring and has served all three of Australia’s commercial television networks – without so much as putting a foot wrong.

When Lettsy and Banjo were first paired in 1993, the ex-jockey thought the little stockhorse was a prima donna.

Under the name of Trewarrick Impulse, he had won ribbons at the Royal Melbourne Show and he came to the racetrack with a bit of an attitude.

“He made it clear that he was the leader,” Lettsy says.

“He had to be the first horse onto the track before each race.

Otherwise, he just stood lead-footed or started pig rooting.”

Banjo on the neck while Lettsy was chatting with triumphant French jockey Gerald Mosse.

According to Lettsy, Banjo spotted Americain’s attack just in time and quickly pulled away.

“I could see old Banjo saying to himself, ‘I’ve led in better horses than you’,” Lettsy says.

Banjo has led home a who’s who of thoroughbreds. In the seconds after their victories, he has rubbed shoulders with Black Caviar, Makybe Diva, Might and Power, Saintly and, of course, the first northern hemisphere winner of the Melbourne Cup, Vintage Crop.

Lettsy attributes Banjo’s tractability and good nature to the horsemanship of his owner, John Patterson.

He might be a fictional character in Vita Catalano’s film Story of Jack, but statistics tell us that Jack’s story is playing out in schoolyards across the country.

One in six Australian students is bullied on a weekly basis, a figure that Ivanhoe resident Catalano felt she had to do something about.

While undergoing treatment for renal cancer, the former actor wrote a script for a short film with a powerful anti-bullying message. With the help of the local community, Catalano self-funded the project, producing the 15-minute film “People wanted me to change the ending, but I’ve said no,” and tirelessly promoting it in schools across Victoria. she says. “Kids are committing suicide over these incidents.”

victim, but there are underlying problems in the creation of a bully, and the film addresses that too.”

It’s a triangular message, but one Catalano has already seen resonate with all three groups.

“One child raised their hand at the end of a screening and said, ‘I have to go into the schoolyard at lunchtime and apologise to the kid I’ve been picking on for months’,” she says.

“The teachers and I all looked at each other and thought, ‘Well, look at that’.”

John Clark, principal of Ivanhoe Primary School was present at the film’s screening for years 5 and 6 and says the story was important in stimulating a dialogue on bullying.

“Bullying is very topical among students at that age level,” he says. “They’re starting to think about the effects of it, and this film provided the kids with some good discussion points.”

Catalano has made her way around an astounding number of schools in Victoria with Story of Jack. Without funding, however, her journey has ground to a halt.

“I’ve invested thousands of dollars of my own money into this project already. I’ve had hundreds of requests for copies and I can’t fulfil them. I just don’t have the resources.”

While distribution of the film is nearly impossible without assistance, Catalano hasn’t given up hope and is making plans to further her anti-bullying crusade through her acting classes.

Currently writing scripts that centre on bullying, Catalano wants to encourage children to act out scenarios, and then swap roles to put themselves in the place of each character.

“This is something I have to incorporate into my classes because I can’t have one more child coming up to me and saying, ‘I just want to be normal, like everybody else,” she says.

“It’s not fair. Everybody has the right to be who they are.”

Although her goal was to make a difference in the schoolyard, Catalano says that producing Story of Jack was a big part of her own healing process.

“The most rewarding thing about Story of Jack has been the positive response from everybody. Most people diagnosed with cancer just crumble, but I’m proud I’ve managed to turn it into something positive.” \ Jdavy@theweeklyreview.com.au

s public concern about bullying at school escalates, whether it be in the schoolyard, hallways or online with social media, schools are increasingly turning to fresh approaches to encourage leadership among students.

One such innovative program is Project Rockit, founded in 2006 by Rosie Thomas and her sister Lucy, who visit schools across Melbourne, running workshops that focus on empowering the kids, rather than adults lecturing.

“When we started, Lucy and I were relatively fresh out of school, having experienced loads of different programs coming through that were designed to address bullying,” says Rosie. “We felt that there was something missing. We saw a need for a program that’s led by young people, for young people. Our experience was you’d have some fluffy-duffy old person come in, stand up in front of a hall and waggle their finger at you, making you feel judged, or patronise you by teaching you things you already know.”

A lot of media attention has been focussed lately on the issue of bullying in schools. At Nunawading Christian College we believe that every child has the right to feel safe and happy at school. As such, we take a proactive approach in ensuring that bullying has no place in our school.

Sport \ Matt Haanappel is in tHe swiM

H

e might be in the very early days of a promising swimming career, but 18-year-old Matt Haanappel has lofty ambitions and the talent to realise them.

He has just returned from his first paralympic games, having claimed two relay medals and making the final in all but one of his events. ‘‘To go to my first games it was all about the experience,’’ Haanappel says. ‘‘Being one of the younger rookies on the team and also having so many experienced paralympians around definitely helped me settle into the team.’’

Haanappel, who swims for Nunawading and the Victorian Institute of Sport, competed in London in the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and the 50m freestyle. The event he didn’t make the final of was the butterfly.

He also claimed gold in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay and bronze in the 4 x 100m medley relay. ‘‘If I made the final I always ended up going faster,’’ Haanappel says. ‘‘My best result as an individual was fifth, so that was encouraging at such a young age.’’

Haanappel was born with cerebral palsy right-hemiplegia, a neurological disability that affects muscle strength and dexterity on the right side of his body.

or cutting food prove difficult, but he has never let it get in the way of his achievements. ‘‘I’ve had that for the past 18 years so I’ve known nothing different,’’ he says. ‘‘I just get the most out of it. I’m just the average person apart from that.’’

Aside from the thrill of his races, Haanappel says just being in a city that embraced the paralympics to the extent that London did was a special experience. ‘‘How the public embraced the paralympic movement “Hopefully I’ll swim until was fantastic and a real eye-opener,’’ he says. ‘‘Being 2024’’ in the village and part of the Australian team, there was a real camaraderie. ‘‘Then walking out for your first final on that first night; there’s nothing like it. People ask me if I could hear the crowd when I swim and this is the only time I’ve been able to say yes.’’

Having tasted success in London, Haanappel has set his sights firmly on the next games in Rio and beyond. ‘‘It’s all about building on that result in London,” he says. ‘‘Brisbane’s bidding for the 2024 [Olympics].
