Mongolian Khan has since won the New Zealand Derby and Australian Derby for trainer Murray Baker and added nearly $2 million to his owner’s coffers.

The days of the Melbourne Cup being won by the battlers and cast-offs such as Rogan Josh and Piping Lane are as rare as a happy bookmaker. Since Vintage Crop won the Cup for Dermot Weld, the race has become one of the most sought-after on the international calendar, coveted by the rich and famous of world racing.

But it’s not easy to win, no matter how many billions are in the bank. Since 1998, Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has tried 13 times, with 20 horses, to under his Godolphin banner. The best he can show for it are three seconds and a third.

The greatest of them all, Phar Lap (who won the Cup in 1930) was an “ugly duckling” yearling that cost trainer Harry Telford only 190 guineas at the New Zealand sales at Trentham in 1927 – the average price at that sale was 340 guineas and the top price 1025 guineas. But the bargain buy’s sale price was close to the annual wage of a labourer at the time. ●

The cheapest modern winner is the horse that gave Bart Cummings his 11th Cup win in 1999. He cost his owner, Tennant Creek teacher Wendy Green, $7500 for a half-share after he failed to reach his reserve of $15,000 at a 1994 Perth sale.

The gelding didn’t race until he was four, and when he retired as an eight-year-old he had 13 wins and $2.68 million in prize money, including $1.8 million for his Melbourne Cup. ●

The last Tasmanian-bred to win the Cup was Piping Lane in 1972. The gelding, who had won only $12,000 in prize money by the time he was a five-year-old, caught the eye of owner-trainer Ray Trinder, who thought the horse had staying potential. He bought him for $6000 and sent him to legendary Melbourne trainer George Hanlon. Within a few months, Ray was leading in a Melbourne Cup winner. ●

The promise Fashion queen Lady Petrova is oozing with style and sass. Following the success of her label and boutique, she has started up a school for Melbourne’s ladies. She says the school aims to inspire and motivate women to express themselves, discover their individuality and gain confidence in their abilities. Her classes include unicorn braiding, flower crown-making, nail art by I Scream Nails, creating a cult brand and how to be a social media socialite.

The pay-off My mother braided my hair every morning as a child, but I’ve never mastered it myself.

I didn’t expect to be good, but was surprised that it wasn’t too hard if you followed Theresa’s helpful tips. Nobody I know has known how to do a fishtail braid since grade 4, so I was thrilled to learn this one on a gorgeous afternoon spent with lovely ladies.

The reality I tried a unicorn braiding class taught by Theresa Winters. About a dozen giggling women filled a sunny room on a secret Melbourne rooftop location (if you book, you find out where). Theresa demonstrated French, Dutch, fishtail and waterfall braids, before we tried them on each other and ourselves. The excitement really began when Lady Petrova broke out the glitter, hair colours and fake flowers for adorning our hair.

Our pick “I tend to name my range after previous holidays,” Louise says. “Earlier on in the year I went to the Seychelles and discovered a traditional form of dance.” Hence the ‘Tinge’ inge’ was born – a centrally worn percher featuring bright colours with locally acquired lace, and veiling at the back that Louise bought at garage sale in Canada. $690.

Working in London in the 1980s, Louise studied costume millinery and worked for a period costume company. She opened her business in the Nicholas Building in 1995.

Made-to-measure and seasonal ready-to-wear pieces. This season is all about black and white and metallics. Louise also runs short courses, with two evening classes on October 24 and 28.
