he Smith Family is a national charity that supports more than 33,000 disadvantaged children and young people, including more than 7000 in Victoria, through our Learning for Life program.

In January we get many calls from stressed families who need help to pay for school books and uniforms.

We’ve just launched our Back to School Appeal and we’re encouraging individuals and groups to sponsor an Australian child so that we can help more children.

When I tell people The Smith Family focuses on helping kids with their education, they understand why. Without a good education, children and young people are more likely to become disadvantaged adults, to struggle with unemployment, welfare dependency and poor health.

By helping disadvantaged children pay for books and uniforms and get extra support from tutors and mentors, we hope that the cycle of disadvantage will end.

The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program runs in 12 communities in metropolitan and regional Victoria. The sponsorship can start at prep, and continue to support the child through primary school, secondary school and into tertiary education.

Our dedicated Learning for Life workers are also responsible for coordinating a range of literacy, numeracy and personal development programs for children, including after-school learning clubs. Many of these programs have been developed through partnerships with schools, local and state governments, community and business organisations, all working

together with the clear aim of giving children in need better opportunities to learn and prosper.

While we don’t run programs in Boroondara, we are grateful for the huge support from this community.

Trams destined for name change

For eight years, Balwyn North resident Ern Wass has been on a scholarly mission to have the wayward tram sign changed to read Balwyn North.

He says it is one of 11 tram lines for which the destinations do not match their signs, another notable one being the No. 72 to Camberwell that ends in Kew. In 2010, Yarra Trams told him the matter was closed. But Mr Wass has the support of Melway, the Geographic Place Names Board and now Boroondara council, which told him last month it would write to Yarra Trams to ask for the destination to be corrected.

Mr Wass’ investigation began in the final days of the trams’ rolling destination signs.

“Yarra Trams said it was too costly to take all the rolls out of the existing trams and repaint them, and that I should wait until the electronic boards came in, which they did around 2004-05,” Mr Wass said.

“The tram now runs to the Docklands, and they were able to amend that destination sign. Why can’t they change the North Balwyn sign?”

Mr Wass provided historical evidence, including a statement from the Geographic Place Names Board, that the suburb was named Balwyn North on February 1, 1928, when Melbourne was divided into postal areas.

“Yarra Trams wanted a whole lot of information for their technology department, then they never replied,” he said.

In 2010, Yarra Trams chief executive Michel Masson sent Mr Wass a letter saying the company had received no information that the name should be changed, and “we regard this matter as closed”.

In a reply on December 18, the council’s manager of corporate services, Bruce Dobson, said: “I have asked council officers to write to

Yarra Trams as you have suggested, and we hope Yarra Trams will respond appropriately.”

Yarra Trams was unable to answer RL’s questions last week, citing staff shortages.

Thieves put heat on open houses BOROONDARA residents are being reminded to lock up their houses in hot weather after a spate of robberies.

Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit Commander Detective Senior Sergeant Daryl Cullens said most crime had dropped over the Christmas period, but there was a rise in burglaries.

Mr Cullens said thieves were taking advantage of doors and windows left ajar to enter properties and steal handbags, wallets, cash, credit cards and electrical items.

“People need to be conscious of security,” he said. “We’re in for some hot weather in the next few weeks, so people should be more vigilant.

“There is always a risk that there could be a confrontation with an offender inside the house.’’

In one case, a resident thought one of their children was creeping around the house. Sprung, the offender fled. Anyone with information about the burglaries should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

MAX BENGTSSON, 19 Around Hawthorn there’s a lot of hard rubbish piled up on the road, and it’s left there for months. The council should address that more promptly.

CELIA WATKINSON, 19 I think that parking should be more available to the public. The cost of parking is too high, and there aren’t enough spaces, especially on Glenferrie Road.

JACKIE JOHNSON, 25 I work in Hawthorn, and the traffic’s pretty bad in the morning, especially along Cotham and Glenferrie roads. I’d like to see something done about that.

Dogs’ doo could be such a gas

IF ALL Boroondara’s 24,000 dogs put a year’s poo in a pile, there would be a 3000-tonne mountain.

Every year, 600 tonnes of the stinky sludge ends up in public places.

It was after a close encounter with some of it that Duncan Chew began developing a “doggy toilet” – a biogas generator for poo.

With two simple, sealed tanks, a chute and a dash of helpful bacteria, the generator makes methane gas and garden fertiliser and removes a whole lot of poo from landfill.

Mr Chew has a $45,000 federal government grant to develop it further – not that he takes all the credit.

“It’s a simple tank system that was first used about 700 BC in Syria, where they used the gas to heat the public baths,” said the Camberwell resident and Swinburne lecturer.

“It can be applied to animal waste, human waste or green waste. ‘‘Farms and abattoirs use it. In

Sweden they run buses on the gas generated. But for some reason we don’t use it for residential purposes.’’

Mr Chew has has set up a 50-litre biogas generator in his backyard to convert the droppings of his two boxer dogs, Diesel and Sally.

The City of Yarra supports his trial of the tanks in public parks through its Energy Foundation, and he is in talks with Boroondara council.

“Dog poo has pathogens such as salmonella, roundworm and e. coli,’’ he said. ‘‘That is why poo is an issue in parks, because when you have kids, runners and dogs coming together it is a potential health risk.’’

Mr Chew hopes that as tanks become cost-effective they could be installed at parks and generate gas to power lighting and barbecues.

Next month Mr Chew will present his prototype under his Poo Power banner at the Sustainable Living Festival in Federation Square and host a screening of a documentary, Dog Poo, the Truth At Last, at Rivoli Cinemas, Hawthorn East.

THE crackdown on Hawthorn’s drunk, unruly “Glenferals” continues, with Boroondara council assessing tenders to supply eight CCTV cameras for the Glenferrie Road nightclub strip.

Council’s director of environment and amenity, David Powell, said installation of the cameras would start in March and be completed in May. “Broad areas of anti-social behaviour have been identified and cameras will be arranged to cover those areas,” he said.

The cameras will be trained on the pedestrian crossing next to the 24-hour McDonald’s, the two arcades to Glenferrie station, the intersection of Glenferrie and Burwood roads and two car parks,

including the large council-owned car park behind the Coles supermarket.

“Glenferal” Road hit the news last year when photos surfaced of the street covered in vomit, litter and drunken patrons at 3am. The street had seven nightclubs at the time, with up to 8000 people flocking to them on Tuesday “university” night, and big crowds on Fridays and Saturdays.

The uproar prompted the Late Night Amenity Group, comprising traders, residents, police and Swinburne University, to ask the council for security improvements. In April the state government granted $245,000 toward the installation of CCTV. The new cameras will be monitored by Boroondara police, who have increased night patrols of the area.

THE hidden turn-offs, secret toilets and beauty spots of our local trails have been flushed out by a new GPS-enabled map for Apple users. Launched on the Avenza PDF maps app, the Boroondara Recreational Cycling Map details the Anniversary, Yarra, Gardiners and Koonung trails, showing amenities and buildings such as libraries and sports centres. Avenza is working on an Android version.

The map’s first big test will come on January 20, when cyclists from the CERES environment park lead a 9km, all-ages ride dubbed the Catchment Crawl. It will start at Summerhill Park, Glen Iris, at 10am and loop through parkland with stops to study plants, animals and do water quality tests.

A highly biodiverse scene is the Glen Iris wetlands, where Virginia, 5, tried the app map for the first time. But could she handle a two-hour ride? ‘‘There’s no lower age limit, but we say the child has to be able to safely

COUNCIL officers are investigating whether to repair or demolish the Walmer Street footbridge over the Yarra after part of the bridge collapsed last week.

The Kew bridge, used by pedestrians and cyclists, suffered cracks in a long timber beam that made it drop 5cm on one side. Alerted by a cyclist, the council closed the bridge on Monday and braced it with temporary props while a bridge engineer inspected the damage.

The bridge was re-opened on Wednesday, but council’s asset planning manager David Elson said a detailed investigation was needed.

The bridge, built in 1978 mostly of cast-iron, has a 70-metre section of laminated timber at its Kew end.

The crack occurred in the timber

section, Mr Elson said. We believe there are ways to repair this timber laminate, but we will have to investigate it,’’ he said. ‘‘My preference would be a permanent repair (rather than demolition).

“I’m really grateful the engineer and the scaffolder helped us out so quickly. ‘‘It’s an important bridge on the Main Yarra Trail into the city and everyone is aware of how heavily it is used; there seems to be someone going across every 30 seconds.”

Mr Elson said the bridge was inspected every two years in accordance with industry practice.

On its most recent inspection, 18 months ago, no faults were found.

Recent hot, dry weather might have contributed to the cracking, which happened on the weathered side of the bridge.

BALWYN NORTH Two men were arrested and are expected to be charged with firearm and drug offences after a routine intercept on Doncaster Road, Balwyn North, turned up firearms and drugs on January 9. Emergency services were called to a fire on the embankment of Gardiners Creek near Warrigal Road about 9.45pm. The fire was extinguished and the woman was arrested at the scene.

A 22-year-old Melton motorcyclist is expected to be charged with speeding after being caught doing 131km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Monash Freeway in Glen Iris about 7am on January 9. The man’s motorcycle was impounded for 30 days.

No more excuses about historical temperature fluctuations; it’s time to act.

Switch off your appliances when not in use, think about food miles (are canned tomatoes from Italy any better than local ones?), go for a swim or have a cool shower instead of putting on the airconditioning, start a compost bin and stop buying stuff you don’t need, especially gifts – why not make a charity donation instead? All these things are easy.

More difficult, but worth considering, are solar hot water (our gas bill goes down to less than $50 a quarter over summer), ceiling fans, double glazing and a water tank for the garden.

We can all do our bit. Get started now, and the planet may thank you.

Is it not possible to have a conversation without liberal use of some of our more ‘‘colourful’’ language? I’m all for swearing in the right context – at inane football commentary, fingers jammed in doors, and after discovering you have a flat tyre – but can we please tone it down on public transport?

LOCAL FEATURE long-term; they keep visa-swapping and eventually become permanent residents. People think you’re racist when you talk about it, but this is not about race. For every person who comes into the country you have to spend $200,000 on additional infrastructure, yet it is an issue the governments keep ignoring.

The growth lobby keeps pushing it because they want more migrants to feed the housing and construction industry. Growth needs to be manageable. Perhaps we should cut migrant intake to 70,000, which was the number we used to allow in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

HE biggest challenges facing Boroondara in 2013 could be planning for its people – its population growth and its ageing residents.Then there are the matters of car parking and upgrading bike paths and shopping precincts. RL asked a selection of community leaders what they consider to be the most pressing issues facing our suburbs in the next 12 months.

reviewing the council plan and setting the direction for this term. I’ve been part of three previous councils, which in turn have focused on below-ground infrastructure, community development and then capital works. Underpinning these challenges is land use planning.

Among the initiatives we’ll have to deal with this term are the new metropolitan development strategy to replace Melbourne 2030; the introduction of new residential zones; reviewing our Activity Centres Strategy; and finalising our

Neighbourhood Character Strategy.

The ageing population represents a particular challenge. A quarter of all dwellings in Boroondara are occupied by one person. About half of those people are over 65, and the number is likely to grow.

That means increased potential for social isolation and demand on the council to expand its support services.

I’ve worked with our officers for more than 10 years.They are committed to providing a level of service to our residents that is the envy of most municipalities in

Victoria. I look forward to a terrific year in which this council achieves great things for our community.

There are almost one million people coming into Australia every year on various visas. Some are temporary, but temporary becomes

Parking is always the top issue for traders. Councils wants to encourage people to walk, but people still need to do their weekly shopping or bring small children.

One of our biggest problems in Ashburton is that last year the redevelopment of the library and community centre was approved without any car park for the users.

The issue in Boroondara is that there’s not enough parking for residents, visitors and shoppers, so our traders and the Kew and Camberwell traders have lobbied for a ‘‘parking in lieu’’ fund.This means that developers, instead of providing their own car parking, would pay into a fund that would eventually pay for a multi-deck car park. But I think we have missed that opportunity.

Our next concern is the look of the shopping centres. A lot of them are looking tired.There’s a whole list of small shopping strips that need a revamp, but if the council does them at the current rate, it will take about 30 years.

crucial to inner-suburban areas.

People look to shopping centres as the hub of their community, and they want them to look attractive.

JULIA BLUNDEN, SECRETARY, BOROONDARA BICYCLE USERS GROUP Our greatest concern is the Darebin-Yarra bicycle link.

Unfortunately we won’t see it finished in 2013, but we would like to get it moving as quickly as possible, because people have been wanting this for 20 years.

The Hawthorn-Box Hill off-road trail has been on our wish list for many years too, and there will be proper scoping on that this year.

The Boroondara Bicycle Users’ Group has another project this year – the Dights Falls trail. A lot of people use the Gardiners Creek trail to get to work, but the Yarra trail near Dights Falls isn’t nearly so bike-friendly; it has steep ups and downs and is indirect.

Our proposal would create an underpass under Belford Road to cut out the steep climb. It would

be good not just for people riding to work, but for children riding to school or local destinations.

We’d also like to have an overpass on the Anniversary Trail at Toorak Road and to fill in that missing link to Camberwell High School.

CAROLYN INGVARSEN, CONVENER, LIGHTER FOOTPRINTS At the height of our bushfire season, people inherently understand that there’s a point around 40 degrees when it can

turn into a disaster.That’s the weather.

The idea of a tipping point in the climate itself is very scary. We are slowly but surely moving toward that extreme. The most obvious thing we can do is to remove the need for our biggest emitters, our coal-fired power stations. It doesn’t take very much to shift to wind and solar energy.They are getting so close to developing a battery that will allow us to store solar energy instead of feeding it into the grid.

At a local level, our council could

be much stricter about building for sustainability, whether it is about renovating or taking into account the orientation and site coverage of new buildings.

About 16 per cent of carbon emissions come from transport.

We support increasing residential density around Boroondara’s activity centres, along with new bike paths. An off-road bike path along the railway line from Box Hill to Hawthorn would create a direct route to the city. We need some money to do a feasibility plan.

six of us, but it meant we could sit directly at the bench for close-up views and smells of what’s going on. Chatting freely about ingredients, cooking techniques and her favourite meals during the 45 minute demonstration, Katie quickly whipped up chermoula kebabs with a Moroccan quinoa salad; a salmon noodle stir-fry; and a salmon Caesar salad.

THE VERDICT While the final dishes are plated up to perfection, this isn’t MasterChef and all the recipes seem fairly easy and achievable and certainly encourage us all to use more salmon.There’s no recipe handouts, which is a shame because Katie moves at a fast pace and you have to concentrate and write quickly to take note of all the ingredients and steps. Luckily I had not had had lunch, as at the end of the session we all tucked into a hearty sample plate of all three dishes. Despite the first two being a little cold, they all tasted as good as they looked. >>

hen Cirque du Soleil’s OVO rolls into town this week, so will a kitchen, a school, offices, warehouses, around 54 performers from 16 countries and a roster of more than 120 behind-the-scenes staff.That’s not including the props – an 18 x 6m wall with built-in trampolines, a six-metre high mechanical flower and an 8.5m x 6.7m mysterious egg that is the object of curiosity and wonder for the insects at the centre of the OVO narrative.

The numbers are staggering, and getting it all to Australia took six weeks by ship from Seattle to Brisbane, where the show had its Australian debut in September.

For assistant artistic director Jen Bender, working on such a large production with a huge but tightknit ‘‘family’’ has been the highlight of her career, allowing her to have cocktails with former Olympians one night and dinner with Chinese acrobats the next. ‘‘We’re always together for meals and the OVO company travels together like a touring city,’’ she says. ‘‘Cirque du Soleil is on such a grand scale and there are so many artists doing so many different things. We’ve got people who do acrobatics, hand-balancing acts, foot-juggling acts, trapeze.There’s just so much that happens in a single show.’’

Visiting Pom makes the most of his holiday

BY EWEN McRAE emcrae@mmpgroup.com.au WITH the next Ashes series just around the corner, you’ll soon be hard pressed to find much goodwill in Australian cricket towards the Poms at the moment.

But down at Glen Iris Cricket Club, they’re over the moon at the form of English import Jack Taylor, whose aggressive batting and bowling is setting up his side for an assault on the Dunstan Shield finals.

Taylor, 21, entered the Christmas break as the competition’s leading runscorer with 432 at an average of 54, including a Dunstan Shield record 210 against Surrey Hill, and a swashbuckling 122 off 67 balls against Mont Albert.

And he returned from his Christmas break on Saturday with 50 as Glen Iris reached 5/95 chasing East Doncaster’s first innings of 130.

Taylor also has 16 wickets with his off breaks to place Glen Iris comfortably second on the ladder.

‘‘That was my first double [hundred] so it was pretty special,’’ Taylor said. ‘‘It’s always good to make runs and I think it’s flowed through and helped my bowling. ‘‘I probably wasn’t getting the runs I wanted early in the season, but I’m a bit more focussed now and it’s paying off.’’

Taylor joined Glen Iris from English county side Gloucestershire, where he is in the early stages of a promising first-class career. And while he says it a different standard back home, he’s enjoying his time Down Under. ‘‘County cricket is pretty full on, with international and England players around you,’’ he said. ‘‘But I’m loving it down at Glen Iris. They’re a good bunch of lads and a pretty young side, which is great.’’

This is Taylor’s second trip to Australia after playing grade cricket in Adelaide two seasons ago, and he’s enjoying the less hectic schedule local club cricket provides.

‘‘It was a pretty busy end to the county season last year so I just wanted the opportunity to come out, train hard and work on my game,’’ Taylor said.

While it’s still early days, Taylor has lofty ambitions for his cricketing career. ‘‘The ultimate goal is Test cricket for England. That’s the pinnacle of the game so that would be the dream,’’ he said. ‘‘And there’s also things like IPL [Indian Premier League] which I’m massively interested in if the opportunity came along.’’

For now though, Taylor is focussed on Glen Iris. ‘‘I’ll stay as long as Glen Iris is still in the competition. Kew moves up the queue after holding on for a win ARI HATZIS

KEW overcame some nervous moments in the run chase to keep its Sub District finals hopes alive with a win over Mt Waverley on Saturday.

With every game a must-win for Kew, they put in a clinical performance with the ball to skittle the visitors for just 120, which they chased down quickly but not without a few headaches.

On a perfect wicket at Victoria Park, Kew got the early breakthrough when captain Francis Gill trapped Alex Deuchar in front for just three.

Andrew Verstoep (20) and Navin Perera (26) rebuilt the innings, but when the later fell to Ryan Baker the game began to slip away from the visitors.

From 2/55, Mt Waverley slipped to 7/91 as Kew strangled the middle order and took wickets consistently with all the bowlers getting involved.

All Kew’s six bowlers got a wicket, with Jack Baker (2-16), Mark Akrigg (2-20) and Ben Waterman (2-24) the multiple wicket takers as the visitors stumbled to 120 all out with three overs to spare.

Kew made a solid start in reply, with in-form Daniel Gledhill and Steven Baldwin cruising to 27 before things started to go awry.

Gledhill (17) was caught behind going for a big shot, before new man Ben Cookson (2) and Baldwin (15)

were also dismissed trying to hit boundaries.

With Kew at 3/39 Mt Waverley was back in the game, but a steadying partnership from Michael Westland (23) and Gill (33) put the result beyond question.

Both men were out with the target in sight, but Kew eventually reached the required target in the 32nd over.

Gill was happy his team got the points, but said his batsmen needed to get better.

“To have five down chasing only 120 is a little disappointing, but we’ll take the win anyway,” Gill said.

“We’ve just got to keep winning and we’re still a chance of taking third or second spot on the ladder if we do that.”

BALWYN’S season hangs by a thread after a falling to Plenty Valley at the weekend.

Batting first, Balwyn could manage just 150 on its home ground, with too much left to too few as only four men reached double figures. Ben Hanley top scored on 35.

In reply, Plenty Valley controlled the innings to chase down the runs for the loss of just four wickets and with 20 balls to spare. Lorenzo Ingram top scored with a handy 42.

Balwyn now sit two games adrift of finals with four rounds left and an early end to the season looks likely.

■ MONT ALBERT IN CHARGE Ladder-leading Mont Albert took a stranglehold on the Dunstan Shield clash with Marcellin Old Collegians at the weekend. After posting a below-par 197, Mont Albert reduced the hosts to 4/31 by the end of the first day.

■ WICKETS GALORE Canterbury staged a remarkable comeback against Old Carey as 20 wickets fell on the first day of the Wright Shield clash.

Canterbury was bowled out for 100, before six wickets to Himesh Sandaradura saw Old Carey make just 76.

Magpies blow one-day final bid

Needing a win to book a place in the final, Camberwell underperformed with both bat and ball as teenage Northcote opener Justin Powick hit an unbeaten century to guide his side to an eight-wicket victory at Bill Lawry Oval.

It could have been so much better for Camberwell, despite losing both openers early in the innings after winning the toss.

Magpies captain Simon Hill (79) combined with Brendan Drew (16) and then James Bett (39) to right the ship and give them control of the innings.

When Bett fell to leave the visitors 4/119, a 200-plus total looked likely.

But the lower order offered little resistance and no one could hang around with the skipper.

Tom Rickarby (12) came and went and Brett Watkins (10) got a start, but when Hill was out Camberwell lost 5/14 to be bowled out for 179 in the penultimate over.

Defending a smallish total, the Magpies again had to rely on their strong bowling to bail them out.

But it wasn’t to be and Northcote, with only one previous win this sea-

Ben Abbatangelo (21) provided steady support, but it was Powick who was the star of the day as he smashed 104 off just 139 balls to get his team its second win of the season.

Camberwell coach Shannon Young was at a loss to explain his team’s performance.

‘‘We were very ordinary,’’ he said. ‘‘We didn’t come to play at all, which is disappointing given what we were playing for.

“We should have been looking at a 200-hundred plus total and then our bowling and fielding was poor.

It was just an average effort and we were outplayed.”

Young said that with the chance of finals now remote, his focus for the remainder of the season was blooding more youth in the First XI. “We’ll try to redeem something out of our year, because to date it’s been very disappointing,” he said.

“The thirds and fourths are in oneday finals so it shows the investment in our youth and our list is pretty strong.”

■ JAKSCH GETS A NUMBER Former Oakleigh Charger Kristian Jaksch will wear number 34 at Greater Western Sydney.

Jaksch, who was taken at pick 12 in last year’s national draft, inherited the number from Devon Smith who will wear number 10.

■ BARKLA TAKES OVER Rick Barkla will coach VAFA club Hawthorn Amateur in 2013. Tim Palma will continue as senior assistant coach as the club plans to bounce back following relegation to Division Four.
