Equally, the government must ensure that a program founded on self-reliance is not hollowed out from within by a bureaucracy that wants to dictate terms or sees support programs in limited and predetermined ways.

Service providers and care planners will have to let go of the rope: they now guide, they don’t control.

If it works, this policy might just be able to provide a prize more precious than rubies: autonomy. \

Port Phillip mayor Amanda Stevens said legislation to regulate the sex industry was a state government decision.

“Council’s approach to street sex workers in the municipality has been largely focused on harm minimisation, and we recognise that street sex work occurs whether it is illegal or not, and as such we focus on maintaining a strong network with other key agencies in the municipality, including Victoria Police to focus on reducing harm associated with the industry,” Cr Stevens said.

Iceberger Don Riddington, of Brighton – the oldest Australian to swim the English Channel – is relaxing in Europe after his history-making swim that broke a 26-year-old record.

The 68-year-old was one of three Icebergers who completed solo crossings, backed by their own teams, in mid-July, becoming the 101st, 102nd and 103rd Australians to take on the Everest of marathon swimming.

Brighton’s Libby O’Farrell, 42, a fellow Brighton Iceberger, crossed on July 13, in 16 hours and 38 minutes – the 25th Australian woman to conquer the strait.

“It was a very, very tough challenge,” O’Farrell said. “One of the hairiest bits was swimming through a swarm of jellyfish as far as I – and the crew boat – could see. I copped a few stings.”

Richmond’s David Perkins, 33, who trains with the Black Rock Icebergers at Brighton Baths, swam the same day as Riddington – July 15 – in 14:03. “But Don’s the real hero – what an inspiration,’’ he said.

Riddington, who trained for three years, left from Shakespeare Beach in Dover at 11.30pm on July 14, covered in sunscreen, Vaseline and lanolin and wearing just his Speedos, cap

and goggles. “I was driven to the harbour like a prize fighter in a rental car,” he said. “But there was no fancy racing start – just straight into the dark water.”

Feeding from a dangling bottle every half hour, Riddington hit the wall after 16 hours – just three kilometres from France. “It took forever to reach. But eventually – pure bliss – my hands were dragging on sand – Libby landed on huge, sharp boulders the day before – I wobbled around like a drunken sailor.”

She confronted the man, who then fled.

On his way out of the house, it is believed the man grabbed the woman’s handbag and mobile phone. The intruder then realised he had left behind a backpack, which the victim had picked up. After a tug-of-war, the intruder managed to free his bag and flee. The woman was not injured. It is believed the intruder was wearing a red hoodie and dark pants.

A Brighton wetsuit maker has been recognised for his two-decade-long dedication to lifesaving.

Life Saving Victoria awarded Colin Ellicott a life membership for his tireless commitment to the Brighton Life Saving Club.

“When the kids were young, I went down and got involved with them and now they’re grown up, I’m still there,” Ellicott said, laughing. “[The club] kept us quite close and involved.”

The 58-year-old has been with the club for 21 years, 17 as secretary.

He said the ocean was in his blood.

“I was really surprised and honoured; for the club [Brighton] to nominate you like this, it’s just a terrific honour,” he said.

Life Saving Victoria president Tom Mollenkopf thanked Ellicott and the three other life membership recipients.

He said volunteering was a great contribution to the community and the lifesaving family.

Elwood Life Saving Club’s David Rylance was also recognised with a volunteer training officer of the year award. \ LB

Victoria’s first heritage display of its kind – about the controversial Catholic child-welfare system – has opened at the former St Vincent de Paul’s Boys’ Orphanage in Cecil Street, South Melbourne, now the headquarters of MacKillop Family Services. Premier Denis Napthine opened the permanent exhibition on July 4 before a large crowd of invited guests, many of whom were former residents of Catholic children’s homes and orphanages. Between 1854 and 1997 more than 100,000 children spent all or part of their childhood years in one or more of the homes. A further 12,500 mothers were residents between 1901 and 1997. The display was created in response to the 2004 Senate inquiry into institutional care, which recommended that heritage display centres be created on sites of former institutions as a memorial to care leavers. For years, local fossil hunters have found ominously large shark teeth in the reefs and shorelines of Beaumaris and Black Rock. They come from the megalodon (which, unsurprisingly, means big tooth), a prehistoric shark that grew to 15 metres and weighed 50 tonnes. One of the most ferocious predators that ever existed, the megalodon ate whales for supper with serrated teeth up to 18 centimetres long.

Beaumaris Bay is one of Australia’s richest fossil deposits of marine life, as well as land mammals and birds, from 2.5 million to 23 million years ago. But most beach visitors would have no idea.

One man who knows intimately the age and extent of fossils in Beaumaris is Dr Erich Fitzgerald, a palaeontologist with Museum Victoria. He will share some of that knowledge at a public talk next Tuesday, August 6, 8pm, at the Beaumaris Lifesaving Club.

Port Phillip council is investigating the impact CCTV might have on crime hot-spots in the municipality.

No specific areas have been ear-marked yet for installation of the crime prevention tool but it is believed that Fitzroy Street is being considered.

Police statistics show that assaults in the municipality continue to rise, with the latest numbers released in June revealing 1017 assaults were recorded in the period from April 2012 to March 2013 – an increase of 73 assaults on the same reporting period from the previous year.

Port Phillip mayor Amanda Stevens said the council was aware of interest in the community over public safety and the role that CCTV might play in increasing this.

“Council is currently reviewing the evidence on the effectiveness and cost of CCTV in preventing crime and whether the deployment of CCTV in crime hotspots is a council function,” Cr Stevens said.

“We will continue to work with Victoria Police and other community stakeholders to support the health and well-being of this community.”

Port Phillip police Inspector Paul Breen said he fully supported the installation of CCTV: “It’s certainly a proactive and reactive tool and, in the current environment in many councils within Victoria, and certainly in Melbourne, CCTV is being used very effectively,” Inspector Breen said.

“I think if proper signage is erected, CCTV most certainly assists in deterring crime.”

Inspector Breen said police had identified Fitzroy Street as the most high-risk area in the municipality and suggested a pilot CCTV program to test its effectiveness.

The property is Kamesburgh, owned by Bayside council and leased to local girls’ school Star of the Sea for its year 9 campus. But the gardens are open to the public, for which Bayside artist Jane Walker (pictured) is eternally grateful; they’re among her favourite locales to paint and she has made them the subject of her 26th solo exhibition.

Walker pays tribute to their grandeur in Kamesburgh Gardens, which features a dozen watercolours on show until September 5 at Ramblings Café, on the corner of Hampton Street and Centre Road, Brighton East.

az Flowers nearly had the Hot Shoe Shuffle tap routines nailed the first time the show toured Australia. Only the carpet in her family’s Morwell home, and her age, hindered her progress.

Her dad, Colin, fixed the carpet problem by laying slate in the lounge room. It was a far more satisfying surface for four-year-old Jaz and her brother, Dallas, to perform on as they split the show’s roles between them.

Jaz always played Spring Tap, the role played by her idol, David Atkins.

The siblings tapped in front of the TV while watching a video of the musical their opera-singer grandmother had taped for them, and they improved their step skills attending mum Vicki’s Dancing Academy in Morwell, Gippsland.

Meanwhile Hot Shoe Shuffle moved on to London. It was the first Australian musical to be exported to the West End after its successful premiere tour of Australian cities 21 years ago. The complete Australian cast travelled with it to London, Japan, Canada and the US, and David Atkins and Dein Perry won a British Olivier Award for its exuberant choreography.

To mark its 21st anniversary this year, Atkins has brought back Hot Shoe Shuffle for another Australian tour. He is in the cast again – this time playing the role of father Dexter Tap. On stage with him, playing April, will be that little girl from Gippsland, now all grown up and an accomplished performer.

“I never thought that Hot Shoe would come back,” says Flowers, now 25. “I never felt as passionate about a show as this one. Nothing in the past 25 years of my existence has influenced me as much as Hot Shoe Shuffle.”

“It’s a really incredible feeling to realise an actual dream you have as a kid is coming true. It was so unexpected to dance alongside my childhood idol. It’s ridiculous; it leaves me bewildered.”

Flowers says that on opening night in Brisbane in May, she felt overwhelmed when she came off stage after a triumphant performance.

“I was just numb,” she says. “I gave it everything I’ve got. I realised that all my dreams had come to fruition.

It sounds clichéd but all my dreams have come true.

“I am most happy and comfortable when I am performing; that’s when life makes sense. I don’t know whether I was born to do this but I feel at home most when I perform. It feels right.”

Flowers’ first song-and-dance solo was at an eisteddfod as a four-year-old, and her first amateur stage role was at 12 as an orphan in Annie with Latrobe Theatre Company in Traralgon. The company recently staged its own Hairspray.

Dance classes continued for many years with her mum, who celebrates 40 years in business this year.

Training of her low-C to high-G range began in earnest when Flowers was 17, in her final year at Kurnai College in Morwell.

“I didn’t like school much,” Flowers says.

“I loved music and I loved drama and that was about it … I always wanted to be a performer.”

Fresh from the success of her first lead role in a musical, as Tracy Turnblad in the long-running Hairspray (directed by Atkins), Flowers says she desperately wanted to win the only female role in Hot Shoe Shuffle, the Tap brothers’ long-lost sister, famously played by Rhonda Burchmore last time around.

Flowers says she was well rehearsed and perfectly placed to audition to be a part of the new Tap family, but she was far from confident.

“I knew the music, and the dancing was not complicated,” Flowers says. “But my first sing for Hot Shoe didn’t come out anywhere as good as I wanted it to.

I was shaking because my idol was sitting right there on the panel.

“The other daunting part was being in a room full of six-foot bombshells in four-inch heels. In the casting brief for April it says she has to be beautiful but there’s nothing about height. I had it burned in my head that the part was made for Rhonda Burchmore, a six-foot two-inch glamazon. I told myself, ‘Jaz, you are more Marilyn Monroe than Rhonda’. Rhonda Burchmore and I are not similar in any way. Our voices, our bodies and our acting choices are all different.”

Flowers was solo in Sydney when she took the call that delivered the news “that made all my dreams come true”. She celebrated winning the part of April by toasting her success with a mojito at Darling Harbour.

Every Saturday for six months her dad drove her to singing lessons in Bentleigh with theatre performer Susan-ann Walker – a four-hour round trip from Morwell for a half-hour lesson.

He also drove her to Ballarat on a seven-hour round trip to see the University of Ballarat’s campus and learn more about its musical theatre course. Flowers says she returned home with a resolve to attain her VCE. “NIDA [National Institute of Dramatic Art] and WAPA [WA Academy of Performing Arts] were too far away,” she says.

“Ballarat – I can deal with that. What was hard was the written side of things in a BA degree. I didn’t like that. I didn’t want to focus time and energy on writing an essay.”

Since graduating in 2008, Flowers has kept on the move and on stage in major professional musicals: Shane Warne the Musical in 2009, Fame the Musical in 2010 and Hairspray in 2011.

She has leapt from ensemble to cast role to lead part from year to year and her achievements have been noted

by Atkins, who told those gathered at the Hot Shoe Shuffle Melbourne launch “a star is born”.

Her parents, who attended the Melbourne launch and Hot Shoe Shuffle’s Brisbane opening night, say their daughter has the drive to get where she wants.

“Jaz is a different cat,” Colin Flowers says. “She moved out of home at 18 to go off to do the inevitable. She took the bit between her teeth, got an agent and did it on her own.

“An opportunity in life comes along and you grasp it.

You learn from it and grow from it. If you are lucky it’s part of who you are and what you are.”

Flowers says she loves to return home between show tours to see her parents and her dog, Meeka.

“I have been living in Sydney for rehearsals, and off and on I’ve been back in Morwell,” she says. “I don’t really have a home base. If I could do the job I love so much in Morwell, I would. I adore being home, where there are only five restaurants to choose from instead of 500.”

Hot Shoe Shuffle moved from Brisbane to play in Sydney in July and it opens at Her Majesty’s in Melbourne this month. Flowers has returned to Morwell between tours, something she can’t do with a long-running show that has eight performances a week.

“Doing a show in the same city for a year is tough,” she says. “With Hairspray I was in Melbourne for a 10-month run, not including rehearsals. I did one-and-a-half years with that show.”

For her performance as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray, she won a Sydney Theatre Award and a Helpmann Award nomination.

“I was pretty much on stage for the three hours of the whole show,” she says. “It was difficult dancing in a fat suit and with that wig under lights, and dancing with 40 other cast members. It was hot but I got used to it. I am a sweater, and the fat suit I had to wear was made of wadding, pillow stuffing and Lycra.

“Hot Shoe Shuffle is easier in that I am not on as much as I was in Hairspray but every time I’m off stage I’m into another costume.”

Flowers has plenty of glamorous gown moments in Hot Shoe Shuffle and sings big-band Broadway hits from the 1940s, including Gershwin’s How Long Has This Been Going On and Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing.

any years ago I was part of a high-school debate where the topic was whether Australia needed a monarchy. Our position was no, negative.

At the time I didn’t really understand what it meant to be a constitutional monarchy, and I think we were coached on a bit by our impressive but clearly biased English teacher, Mr Hamilton.

Three of us stood up and delivered earnest little speeches about Australia needing to stand on its own two feet. Someone might have mentioned the events of 1975, although I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have been me, but the gist of the argument was it was time Australia worked out who it was and got on with it. We didn’t need this bunch of stuffy old fogeys as our rulers – whether they ruled in theory or practice was irrelevant.

Then some bloke from the tech school held up

joyous thing, of course, and always worth celebrating, but surely we need acknowledge the arrival of a royal baby only in a cursory, magazine-fodder kind of way.

Here is another pretty little celebrity infant to be admired and photographed, just like the Kardashian baby, its outfits analysed and blogged on a similar scale as, say, Suri Cruise and Harper Beckham.

Surely no one actually thinks this child may end up ruling our country, in theory or in practice? Or have I been watching too much Game of Thrones?

It seems odd that we cannot accept an Australian female prime minister without picking on her hair and denigrating her private bits, but we curtsey with hallowed respect to some old Englishwoman who breeds corgis and chooses between about six castles to live in at any given time.

My view \ KATRINA HALL HAS ANOTHER GO AT THE ROYALS half a dozen copies of New Idea and Woman’s Day, all with Diana or the Queen on the cover, and said of course we need a monarchy – we are in love with them.

That was the precise moment we anxious little republicans were beaten, and pretty much fair and square. Who can argue with the cover of New Idea? This was 1981. My mum had a Lady Di hairdo and we were all lusting after white deb dresses with big puffy Diana sleeves. Diana fever had taken hold of us all.

Our defeat was easier to swallow then than at the 1999 referendum, but that’s a whole other complicated story.

But what I can’t believe is, decades later, and despite the fact the royal family kind of imploded there for a bit, our world is still the same. Last week a woman on the street stopped me and asked if I’d heard any news about the royal baby. Had it come? Did I know anything?

M

ention Tasmania in wine circles and you can be sure the first words people utter will be pinot noir and chardonnay.

These are grapes that thrive in the margins and Tasmania’s cold climate provides the perfect environment to produce still and sparkling wines from them. Their star is certain to burn brighter as young vines age.

But mentioning only these grapes does a disservice to other varieties that are being championed by producers who see potential for other grapes to thrive.

Unlike Victoria, which has nearly 20 wine regions, the whole island is a single region – or appellation, as the French call it – and a diverse range of soil types and micro-climates means that many grapes thrive.

Early Tasmanian vineyards – we’re talking the 1970s – were actually planted with grapes such as cabernet and riesling, while the first pinot noir and chardonnay grapes were planted with sparkling wine production in mind.

“There was a big push for cabernet in the ’70s and ’80s, but you don’t see many of them around now,” says Bay of Fires winemaker Peter Dredge.

“Early on everyone was in a trial period and people planted a little bit of everything and, sooner or later, realised what worked in those areas. Pinot and chardonnay have performed and so has riesling – it’s one of the little gems that has come to the fore.

“There’s a lot of old-vine riesling around Tasmania.

We know from regions such as the Mosel in Germany, which is actually a little colder than Tasmania, that you can actually do some pretty good things.”

Dredge suggests people became impatient with grapes such as cabernet because pinot noir is a more consistent performer in the vineyard.

“You’ve got to accept the fact that you’re going to lose a couple of vintages out of every 10, so there is risk,” he says. “On the east coast and little pockets of the Derwent and Coal River valleys, you get a decent amount of sunlight and heat throughout the summer, so you can ripen these varieties successfully.”

Dredge says the early winemakers soon realised that many Tasmanian sites were better suited to table wines.

Two distinct weather patterns play a part in growing conditions, limiting the range of suitable grapes.

“The east coast is moderated by the weather systems coming down the east coast of the mainland and it’s quite similar to the Victorian micro-climate,” Dredge says. “Down the middle, the Tamar and Huon Channel and the Derwent valleys are moderated by the prevailing westerlies.

“Then there’s soil types. The Derwent and Coal River valleys are alluvial and the east coast is a big volcanic dolerite upsurge.”

Look out for varieties such as pinot gris, riesling and shiraz grown on Tasmania’s alluvial spine, while fine examples of cabernet sauvignon and its friends from Bordeaux – merlot and cabernet franc – are found on the east coast.

ust. Espuma. Savoury marshmallows. Pseudo bacon. To listen to the waiters’ elaborate descriptions of each arriving plate, you’d \ think St Crispin was a throwback to the crazy days of molecular gastronomy.

But don’t panic. There is method to the occasional food-science madness of Scott Pickett and Joe Grbac KING – two talented chefs who hail, respectively, from SAlMON, Northcote’s exalted Estelle Bar and Kitchen and the late ShAvED Press Club.

CAlAMARI, Sure, they might kick off with an oiled wafer of crisp SqUID INK & potato layered with dots of tomato mousse and vinegar SAffRON “dust”, but the important thing is it tastes terrific. Much like everything on the menu here.

St Crispin is named after the patron saint of shoemakers, a nod to the cobbler who once occupied this Smith Street site, and a neat fit with the neighbouring St Mark’s, patron saint of notaries, lions and op shops. More recently the site was home to Cavallero, which closed suddenly and left Pickett, Grbac and Co. just 10 days to renovate and launch what may well be Smith Street’s best restaurant.

The long, lofty space will feel familiar to those who knew Cavallero but the finishes are mostly new. Behind the green marble bar lurk serious cocktails ranging from agave syrup margaritas to “perfect” G&Ts containing capsicum, of all things. Dining settings are comfortable, Scandi-style timber and leather seating, banquettes and handmade oak tables, with Italian stools at the bar.

The place has been packed on both my visits but the staff ensure service is as smooth as the mood-enhancing playlist of Sam Cooke, Petula Clark and 10cc.

A collection of eight co-branded Nespresso Breville coffee machines was launched in Australian shops this month. The range, priced between $199 to $899, has been designed to use Nespresso’s portioned coffee capsule system and features models in a variety of shapes and colours. Office tests on the fire-engine-red mid-priced CitiZ and Milk machine brought a crowd of willing volunteers, a few false starts and a definite preference for the stronger espresso pods. The lesser of two milk-frothing devices was also preferred. Features include programmed cup-size options, allowance for taller coffee vessels, an integrated milk heating and frothing system and an automatic shut-off after 30 minutes of inactivity. We found the one-litre removable water tank ran out quickly and the milk tended to be overheated, requiring earlier manual shut off. With practice, the quality of the brew met broad approval. \

There are certain, rare records that it’s genuinely difficult to imagine someone not liking. This is one. The fourth LP from Melbourne’s Major Chord (AKA social worker Dan Flynn) is a striking and undeniably beautiful work.

Admittedly, it’s a particular type of beautiful – more the spectral beauty of a frosty morning than the pretty warmth of tropical beach. Really, Transition is folk music in the best sense. There’s a pastoral quality, drawing on traditional instrumentations, but it’s not the banjo-pluckings of wannabe bumpkins. Instead, Flynn uses familiar arrangements to tell us stories about ourselves and our city. It’s fair to surmise his day job provides him with no shortage of fare. On the title track, he seems to be counselling the listener, singing “all that you believe is not your fault�. At other times, he’s even more direct, announcing “this is a cautionary tale� before launching into The Next Big Thing. Throughout, there are hints of the affecting, aching folk of artists such as Bon Iver, but Flynn manages to move the listener without sinking into melancholy. Despite its frankness, this is an easy listen, likely to seduce even those who give folk a wide berth. \

apocalyptic comedy is in vogue, with this British ensemble piece hot on the heels of a not-dissimilar effort from seth Rogen. Both films are very funny, even if they’re thoroughly male affairs. to be fair, The World’s End is, explicitly, a film about middle-aged men. For perma-teen gary King (simon Pegg), the world ended when he was 17. at 40, he’s driving the same car, listening to the same music and wearing the same doc Martens boots. Pegg does well to imbue a potentially unlikeable character with nerdish charm and a few potent notes of familiarity. in an attempt to relive the best night of his life, King rounds up his old chums for a hometown pub crawl. Past resentments quickly bubble up. as we settle in for a tale of lost youth and rekindled romance, King discovers the town has been replaced by robots. the two previous films in this loose trilogy from Pegg and director edgar wright have found fun playing with genre. Shaun of the Dead was part romantic comedy and part zombie horror. Hot Fuzz was part Midsomer Murders, part Bad Boys. here, the genre twist happens reasonably late. thankfully, the character stuff remains well-crafted, with Pegg and wright using their ridiculous premise to expose poignant truths about identity, friendship and regret. steeped in ’90s music and iconography, The World’s End at once inspires nostalgia and warns against it – an intelligent, nuanced take on apocalypse comedy with energetic physical comedy. \

Everyone’s favourite property porn returns this week, with a return visit to a past near-disaster. Back in 2009, architect Lincoln and artist Lisa bought themselves a few hectares of woodland greenery on the Isle of Wight and attempted to transform an ugly brick bungalow into a lush rural retreat – with the help of cow dung and yoghurt.

Host Kevin McCloud is a particularly doubtful guide to this enterprise, at first critical that the bungalow is staying and later despairing that the pair have stripped it of its kitsch charms. Nothing goes very smoothly (such are the demands of drama, even the true-life variety) but the pleasure here is seeing McCloud slowly won over by the eccentric project. Revisiting the site two years on, he is effusive to the point of evangelism.

For the armchair architect (or wannabe home owner), Grand Designs and fellow guilty pleasure Escape to the Country have the appeal that celebrity mags must to those mired in supermarket queues. Here is a glimpse of a fantasy life not lived, of extravagance and glamour most of us can only aspire to. \

ampton Primary School’s football team’s last win was such a distant memory, no one can’t even confirm how long ago it was.

“We hadn’t won a game for what traces back to about 10 years,” said Fallon Page, coach of the team.

“It was definitely eight years since we’d won, and we asked some older people from the school if it had been longer and they couldn’t tell us.”

The team finally snapped that unfortunate streak last year, beating Black Rock, but this year has gone on to unprecedented success.

The team won six of seven matches and, after beating Brighton in late June, they progressed to district level.

“The kids were just so ecstatic, Ducks” so excited to take it back to their school and share it with their peers and families,” said Page. “It was a bit emotional.”

The win over Brighton was a culmination of a few years of hard work, said Page, who took over coaching the team three years ago.

“The kids were really proud of themselves and their school. This year we had the highest number of try-outs ever, in excess of 40 kids, and we’ve started to achieve more success.”

Such were the skills of prospective players, picking the team proved to be a headache compared with previous years.

But it was selected, and the squad trained once a week on Tuesday mornings, as well as several meetings along the way.

Page said the results, a massive turnaround from average losing margins of 120 points, were phenomenal to watch.

“The kids really embraced each other,” she said. “It’s not so demoralising when you’re not losing all the time.

“They worked so well as a team, supporting each other, doing the one-percenters, listening to coaches and taking things on board.

“And against Brighton the boys and girls knew if they won that, then they would go to district. It was the last day of school term so they really wanted it.

IRONIC ICONIC \ RACHEL BERGER FINDS HopE …

Weeping during the nightly news on television while eating your dinner will give you dyspepsia. After ingesting reports about the toxic effects of Australia’s growing income inequality, asylum-seeker policy, the downturn in the mining industry and the lack of transparency in our justice system, my stomach makes creaking noises all night. It’s hard to know where to look at this time of political polarisation and “gotcha” power games in Canberra.

Recently, while standing at the corner of William and Lonsdale streets in the CBD, I looked up at the six-metre sculpture Lady of Justice, above the front entrance of the County Court. She’s awesome (in the old language).

Despite the stress and bleak information my brain was juggling, I felt grounded and safe.

Justice is a big word; the message I got from this sculpture was that through dialogue and how we interact and listen to each other, it is possible to be open to different solutions. Sure, I’d had a big dose of B vitamins with breakfast, but I’ve knocked on the door of failure too many times to be overly confident or starry-eyed.

William Eicholtz’s Lady of Justice (2002) made from cast and plate aluminium, is potent. In his words, this “combination of highly detailed drapery and smooth flat areas evokes an image of Grecian relief sculpture – and perhaps of ruins pieced back together. The image is of a strong, mature female figure, described by her sumptuous robes. Her face, feet and arms are devoid of detail, indicating no specific age, race or religion. The

A goddess of justice has existed in many cultures as far back as the ancient Mesopotamians. Greek goddess Themis – able to foresee the future – was recognised as the goddess of divine justice. She’s often depicted without a blindfold because of her clear-sightedness and prophetic skills. The Roman goddess of justice Justitia, on which Eicholtz’s sculpture is themed, is usually depicted blindfolded, holding a sword and scales. The

sword in her right hand is double-edged, symbolising the power of reason and justice, which can be wielded either for or against any party. The blindfold indicates that justice is not subject to influence. The scales represent the impartiality with which justice is served.

She symbolises “the fair and equal administration of the law, without corruption, avarice, prejudice or favour”.

Why bother with all this symbolism and history?

Well, Justice together with Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance form a quartet called the Cardinal Virtues.

(What happened to Tolerance – why wasn’t she at that meeting?) These virtues – mentioned in sources from the Old Testament to Socrates and Plato – are considered the cornerstones of Western philosophy.

Perhaps now more than ever, we need to remember that by listening openly and responding equally to each other’s rights and needs, we may be able to reduce the opportunity for an us-and-them attitude.

1 \ Birrarung Wilam Birrarung Wilam, meaning river camp, is a stone, wood, stainless steel, bronze, nickel and audio installation by indigenous artists Vicki Couzens, Lee Darroch and Treahna Hamm (2006) celebrating the physical and spiritual connections between indigenous people and place. The underlying philosophy is gulpa ngawul – best translated as “deep listening”, to cultural knowledge, stories and practices – and revitalising them through the reinterpretation of tradition and the site. The sense of place is genuinely kinesthetic among these separate but connected components; the puulwuurn (mound campsite), the eel pathway, two message sticks, five shields, a group of ancestor stones, interpretative panels, water vessels and an audio installation.

Tilly Aston was the first blind person in Australia to attend university but her education was cut short by a lack of textbooks in Braille. In 1894, she established a Braille library and a year later founded the Association for the Blind (which became Vision Australia Foundation), the aim of which was to improve the quality of life for the blind through self-help rather than charity. Her efforts gained free post for Braille and talking books for the blind, free travel on public transport and the right to vote. When you approach Anton Hasell’s interactive bronze sculpture in Kings Domain, the bell movement sensors trigger a series of tolls. Fittingly, the inscription on one bell is in Braille.

Formerly a bowling green, Veg Out is a St Kilda institution – an organic, chemical-free garden plot run by volunteers. I

t’s difficult to picture Sandringham as the seaside town it once was. Sun-seekers from town used to escape down “the coast” (known today as Beach Road) for the weekends during summer but, as the ritual grew in popularity, many never left.

The sleepy community quickly became an established part of Melbourne’s urban sprawl to the south. However, subtle reminders of its history as a retreat for the rich and famous remain. Hollyburton is one of them.

Built in 1908 on a wide allotment in Fernhill Road, this transitional Edwardian bungalow was the summer holiday house for politician James Fairbairn and his family.

Set well back from the road, behind a high rendered fence, the house was built on an angle at the north-western end of the 1849-square metre block.

The position creates a secluded northern pocket for the addition of a pool and surrounding deck by the current owners, who have lived here for eight years. Together with the tennis court and extensive gardens, the property is like a country estate.

“Transitional” is the term used by heritage experts Allom Lovell & Associates (now named Lovell Chen) to describe the house’s combination of Queen Anne architectural elements and bungalow styles that were beginning to emerge in Australia during the period.

Parts of the house were also strongly influenced by the arts and crafts movement, particularly in the prominent roof design of intersecting cross gables with exposed rafter ends.

Whatever the style, the preservation of Hollyburton’s original features is extraordinary.

A wide verandah stretches almost the length of the façade and is tiled in polished slate.

Like its block, the house is wider than it is deep, with a floorplan of connected rooms that also feed off one horizontal hallway.

A curved wall of leaded casement windows offers a leafy vista from the dining room, which has art nouveau ceilings and more timber double doors leading into a fitted study with a separate entrance.

The lounge room, however, is the showstopper; an example of true craftsmanship with exposed timber ceiling beams and rich timber panelling shouldering a semicircular bow of leadlight casement windows with decorative stained glass to match the internal doors. Window seating is built into the bow, which, when combined with an elaborate pewter hearth, creates a cosy atmosphere among the grandeur.

A billiards room, with its original light fittings, is tucked off to one side.

The kitchen, meals and family areas form an L-shape around the eastern side of the house, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors leading out to the verandah with multiple outdoor dining areas.

The aesthetic here is far more contemporary; timber panelling painted in neutral tones to complement marble benchtops, timber cabinetry and modern stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen.

The main bedroom is on the ground level, with an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and glass double doors leading to the deck around the pool.

The other four bedrooms are upstairs off a wide landing.

One has a walk-in wardrobe, en suite and is large enough for a retreat or sitting area. The others are slightly smaller, but all have wardrobes, built-in desks and share a large main bathroom.

Today, Melbourne’s wealthiest families seek summer houses a little further down the coastline, but for Fairbairn (who was the federal minister for air in the Menzies wartime ministry) and his family, Sandringham was the sweet spot.

It has all the hallmarks of Edwardian architecture – ruby red brickwork, flush joints, wide eaves, a hipped roof with terracotta tiles and a circular-shaped leadlight window.

Once inside, the first obvious feature is the height of the cathedral ceilings. Higher even than in most other period houses, they create an imperial atmosphere. Off the L-shaped hallway are three large bedrooms, each with original fireplaces. The pick of the crop is the front bedroom, which has timber floorboards, built-in bookshelves and a gigantic bay window looking out to the street. The other two bedrooms have soft pink carpets and built-in wardrobes. Interestingly, the skirting boards and architraves have been painted in shades of green, which is a pleasant combination with the natural-coloured walls. Further along is a black-and-white themed bathroom, with timber cabinetry and dual vanities. Although the lounge is comfortable and spacious, it’s the back kitchen and dining room that is the house’s winning feature. Paying homage to the familiar suburban pattern of gable roofs, the extension has a pitched wall of east-facing glazing.
