hat is it that makes Melbourne so special? Those of us born and bred here know and love its unique charms, but what do others think?

This week’s Love Where You Live edition celebrates everything we love about Melbourne, told through the eyes of people who have moved to the city from interstate or overseas.

It features some of Melbourne’s most interesting and prominent people, sharing the things about this city that make it such a great place to live, work and do business. It’s fair to say they are as captivated by the world’s most liveable city as the locals are.

For Collingwood’s American recruit Mason Cox, it’s the fact something is always going on, and it is easy to get around. It also helps that he enjoys a much better work-life balance than in the USA. And when did Mason finally feel like a local? “My first hook turn. I was like, ‘All right, I’m a local now’.”

KIIS FM drive presenter Kate Langbroek, a Brisbane native, has a different take. “There is something about Melbourne that is so warm and welcoming and appreciative of difference,” she says. “I love Melbourne the way you can love it only if you know what it’s like not to live here”.

Melbourne is so hot right now.

The world’s most liveable city is also officially Australia’s fastest growing; according to the lastest official statistics more than 100,000 people moved here last financial year.

What’s the attraction? We asked some of our favourite personalities who were born elsewhere why they choose to call Melbourne home.

GARY MEHIGAN The MasterChef judge moved here from Britain in 1991 with his wife Mandy and was instantly taken with the city’s culinary diversity.

Why Melbourne? I grew up on the south coast of England. I’d been working in London for eight years and I got a bit blue about living there. I’d worked with many Australians, so I decided to give it a go.

First memories? I remember wandering into Fitzroy Gardens and sitting on the grass for some lunch. It was one of those quintessential Melbourne blue-sky days. I looked through the trees at this very modern, very different city and just thought, ‘I love this’.

Any surprises? The diversity struck me straight away. There were all these distinct areas. You could go to Victoria Street and get Vietnamese, or up to Sydney Road for Lebanese or to Preston Market or Chinatown.

Favourite places? We live in Malvern East and I love going to local cafes such as Our Kitchen Table, Coffee & Soul, Fergus and Millstone.

Best thing about the city? There’s something special about it – even at this time of year when it’s a bit gusty. Different clothes come out, you cook different food, you celebrate different things.

Do you feel like a local? I’ve always travelled a lot, and I feel very emotional when I come home. The rumble of the trams, the footy in the winter, all the things that make you feel grounded and proud.

Describe Melbourne in three words? Easy. Exciting. Comfortable. ●

YUMI UMIUMARE Butoh dancer and choreographer Yumi Umiumare was born in Hyogo, Japan, and first came to Melbourne in 1991 with the Dairakudakan Dance Company for the Melbourne International Festival. In 1993, she decided to move here and bring her unique brand of cabaret to Melbourne.

Why Melbourne? I really liked the space – coming from Tokyo where there’s so much density.

First memories? The people were nice. I hung around a lot in St Kilda – there’s the beautiful beach and openness and a lot of artists living there. I even saw Nick Cave walking on Acland Street.

Surprises? I moved here on a Sunday and I didn’t see anybody – the shops were closed. I’d seen the big crowds at Moomba and I thought that was normal, but then on a normal day I thought, ‘what’s happening?’. Of course, that’s all changed now.

Favourite places? I like the little laneways, like Degraves Street, with all the cafes. I also sometimes like to feel like a tourist and catch a tram and just watch the landscape and see what’s changed.

I love going to the Malthouse Theatre and the Arts Centre.

Best thing about Melbourne? Melbourne has depth, it’s a bit underground. It’s the cold weather, I think, it makes it grungy, like the north of Japan, where Butoh comes from.

kATE LANGBROEK The KIIS FM drive co-presenter grew up in Brisbane before moving here in the late ’80s – initially to study at the Victorian College of the Arts, and later to work as a TV writer and presenter. She lives with her husband and four children in St Kilda.

First memories? I have a very vivid memory of standing on Swanston Street with my friend, holding a map and being lost. People came up to us and said, ‘Can I help you? Are you lost?’ I had never been in a city where that would happen.

What surprised you? A friend had organised a baseball game, and mid-game it started to rain. My Brisbane brain went, ‘Oh no, it’s finished’, but the Melbourne people didn’t even comment on it, they just kept playing. It was a revelation about the way that you can think differently.

Favourite places? Yah Yah’s in Collingwood is so much fun – just like a great house party. With the kids, we spend a lot of time at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre for basketball, and the St Kilda Sea Baths for a beautiful salty swim.

Best thing about Melbourne? There is something that is so warm and welcoming and appreciative of difference. I often say to my friends, ‘I love Melbourne the way you can love it only if you know what it’s like not to live here’.

DOLLY DIAMOND Long before cabaret performer Dolly Diamond moved to Melbourne from Britain in 2009, her alter ego, Michael Dalton, had made the trip when he was 12, with his parents. At 22, he moved back to Britain, then 17 years later brought Dolly with him to Melbourne’s thriving cabaret scene.

Why Melbourne? While I was living back in London, I think Melbourne grew up – as did I. The cabaret and comedy scenes were incredible; there seemed to be a different festival every other week.

First memories? There was a heatwave when we arrived. I remember having to go to the sickbay at school and lie down because it was just too hot for this little English boy.

Favourite places? My favourite bar is Cabinet Bar & Balcony in the city, I just love it. They’ve got a welcoming attitude. I’m prone to a mince down Chapel Street and I love the Astor Theatre.

Best thing about Melbourne? I find it incredibly welcoming and progressive. I like that festival atmosphere and that audiences get out there and support the comedy, cabaret and the like.

Do you consider yourself a local? You wake up and go, ‘I don’t think I could live better anywhere else’. I don’t think you could put down roots in more nourishing soil.

When did you first feel like a local? I think for me it was when I stopped comparing everything to London, and I realised that there was no point comparing it any more because this is where I live and this is where I want to live.

MASON COX Collingwood footballer Mason Cox grew up in Dallas, Texas, and was recruited by the AFL while studying at Oklahoma State University, where he played college basketball. He moved to Melbourne in 2014, and made his debut for the Magpies on Anzac Day last year. He loves Melbourne life, and plans to one day become an Australian citizen.

Why Melbourne? The AFL came out of nowhere and asked me to come to a draft combine in Los Angeles. I did quite well. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I decided to head halfway around the world to a place I’d never been, to play a sport I’d never heard of.

What surprised you? I started driving right away – so driving around roundabouts on the other side of the road and things like that were a bit crazy.

Favourite places? There’s a place called Bendigo Street Milk Bar in Richmond, near me, and another place, Touchwood – they’re both favourites. The coffee culture in Melbourne is great.

Best thing about Melbourne? The infrastructure is great, it’s so easy to get around and there’s always something going on. I think the work-life balance here is so much better than in the States. People understand that life is not work – so that’s a cool change from what I’m used to.

eatballs might sound like an odd measure of a city, but this demonstrates that you can start just about anywhere in the alphabet and find a world-beater in Melbourne.

Everyone knows we have the grooviest lanes, the hippest hipsters and the creme de la creme of latte artists, but Melbourne is also apparently the ballsiest city, according to Conde Nast’s Traveller magazine.

It named The Meatball & Wine Bar No. 1 in the world for its chicken meatballs with pesto salsa verde on creamy polenta.

Of course, you wouldn’t read about it unless you lived in the city identified by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10 literary cities and boasting the best bookshop on the planet, Readings Carlton, or International Bookstore of the Year as it was more formally identified at the 2016 London Book Fair.

F

or six days Drew Rhodes has had a scout roaming the streets of Yarraville looking for just the right house for The Wrong Girl. The property will feature in the second series of Channel Ten’s hit drama, and it’s Drew’s job as location manager to ensure it fits the criteria.

“It needs to be more than just a white box tacked on the back of an old Victorian,” he says.

“It needs to have some warmth and be a believable setting for these characters because we are going to be spending some time in there.”

Yarraville, with its buzzy cafes and village feel, has become as central to The Wrong Girl’s appeal as its star Jessica Marais.

“It is almost a retelling of what is happening to Yarraville with the influx of hip, young professionals,” Drew says. “My take on this is that The Wrong Girl is doing for the inner-west what the The Secret Life of Us (2001-2005) did for St Kilda.”

That immensely popular earlier drama, starring Deborah Mailman and Samuel Johnson, was Drew’s first major credit as a location manager.

Since then he has worked on films such as The Dressmaker (2015), the gothic fantasy I, Frankenstein (2014), which required the interior of the Regent Theatre to be totally trashed between performances, and Ghost Rider (2007), starring Nicholas Cage.

His television credits range from Stingers, The Slap, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, House Husbands and the current Seven Types of Ambiguity to the third series of the cult American drama The

Leftovers, which was shot largely in Melbourne last year. The final instalment of the apocalyptic HBO series, starring Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler, used several recognisable Melbourne locations, including Federation Square and Hosier Lane.

“It was a huge logistical exercise,” Drew says.

“Every day there would have been 180 crew and

40 trucks on site. By the time you put all those people together in a space the size of Hosier Lane, it stops it working. Then we have to control the laneway so people who were otherwise going to do a tour looking at graffiti art can’t look at it for those five hours. Part of my role is to explain that. We talk a lot, we negotiate and we pay people for the inconvenience and loss of business.”

But the Hosier Lane shoot pales against Drew’s biggest job to date. It involved closing Flinders Street

and turning it back to 1943, complete with W-class trams, for the 2010 Steven Spielberg production The Pacific. “Generally people don’t spend a lot of time thinking about how it is done and they are not supposed to,” he says. “It is all smoke and mirrors.

We are trying to make you get lost in the story.”

Finding the perfect location can sometimes take weeks. Drew recalls working on Animal Kingdom (2010) and offering more than 30 options for one house. It was just one of 53 locations used in 35 days of shooting.

“You drive and walk the streets a lot, trying to hone in on the style of thing you are after,” he says.

“You start to get a feeling for places and make enormous assumptions about what might be on the inside. But you never really know until you cross

the threshold, and that’s when the real work begins.

Once I have got past the first stage of explaining why I am standing on the doorstep, I say, ‘well, if you contemplate doing this, have you ever been to the circus, because that is what this is’.

“We frequently take out every stick of furniture and maybe paint a wall or two, maybe even the whole house … trust me, we will paint it back.”

As a broad guide, the industry pays $500 a day for set-up fees to allow the art department to dress a property and $1500-$2500 a day to shoot.

This can rise to as much as $5000 for a very large high-end property.

As one of about 30 people working in this role in Melbourne, Drew has occasionally used the same location for different shoots. “The place we used for the home of Julia Morris and Gary Sweet’s characters in the first three series of House Husbands was the same one I used very briefly in a comedy series called Twentysomething three years before,” he says.

Then there are those locations that you simply couldn’t imagine being put to certain uses. For instance, a Monbulk soccer oval became the Indonesian jungle backdrop to the execution of Bali Nine prisoners Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan for Matthew Sleeth’s forthcoming film Guilty.

Guilty “You have to concentrate really heavily on both what the essence of the thing is and what the camera will actually see,” Drew says. “Then, of course, you have to letterbox everyone around there and tell them not to worry about the guys with guns.” ● sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

A self-taught photographer who hails from Greece, Yiannis began shooting on the streets four years ago – particularly in the city, “where all the action is”.

“When I’m out on the street, I’m not looking for something particular to photograph,” he says. “I look for the beauty in the mundane, details that most do not see, yet are happening right in front of their eyes.”

Yiannis lists Fan Ho, Alex Webb and Constantine Manos as some of his favourite photographers, and is always up for reinventing himself. “I am now experimenting with colour photography,” he says. “I don’t feel intimidated by colour anymore – in fact, I feel the complete opposite. I am really excited by its possibilities.” ●

As a commercial photographer, Jesse Marlow is constantly on the road, exploring Melbourne’s nooks and crannies in search of the perfect image. He’s been capturing quintessentially Melburnian moments for 21 years, but he doesn’t have a favourite hunting ground. “There are great photos to be taken wherever you might be,” Jesse says.

The 39-year-old counts late Australian realist artist Jeffrey Smart as an influence, but he also keeps an eye out for other forms of inspiration.

“Whenever I come across a group of workers in high-vis clothing, I’ll stop to see if there’s an interesting photo to be taken,” Jesse says. “I love the contrast of the high-vis outfits set against suburban backgrounds.” ●

Predictions vary wildy but, writes SARAH HARRIS, experts agree that by mid-way through the 21st Century, Melbourne will be even more marvellous.

r Peter Ellyard, futurist, strategist and author of Designing 2050, predicts that in 28 years Melbourne will have held the ranking of the world’s most liveable city for 39 years.

“We did this by conscious design after having first achieved it by accident. We imagined Melbourne as a seven-star icon of liveability and set out to build it, realising we could build an industrial future for ourselves around this, and became the world’s leading marketplace for liveability ways and wares.

“Our liveability robots reduce drudgery and inconvenience in our lives, they run our transport, manage our water and add to our comfort, happiness and wellness.

“Peak hours have disappeared and the old planning zones separating work and residential living have vanished, and there are designated

community conviviality zones.

“Our traffic flows are designed on algorithms based on how ants deal with clogged pathways, and robots construct our homes, mimicking termites. We don’t clean windows because our windows are self-cleaning – a technology developed from noticing how lotus flowers stay clean when surrounded by mud.

“All our electrical energy is sun-powered and many of our homes are energy autonomous and no longer on the grid. The CBD’s famous laneways have been emulated throughout the metropolitan area.

“Work has become mobile and many people work from cafes or public spaces, and although the population has increased by 50 per cent, there is hardly any more office space than in 2017.

“The Cool Melbourne Code changed the colour of the city so all our streets, buildings and roofs are light-coloured, and many have natural covers of

plants and gardens on or in them, so off-white and green predominates.

“Permeable pavements and streets collect rain in underground tanks, which enable automatic irrigation, and we have become a city of fountains and water features. Even public art is designed to heat or cool us, according to the season, as well as please us, and we also export urban cooling ways and wares.

“In 2050 we can look back with pride on two generations of conscious transformative change and we are now truly an exemplary 21st-century city.” ●

“downsizer’s delight” is often defined by what it is not. “We’d like something smaller,” this postchildren, pre-retirement, liberated and frankly quite sexy piece of the buyers’ market says.
