“In Melbourne we’re obsessed by coffee,” George says in this week’s cover story. “If you want a milk-based coffee, we have the best coffee in the world. I don’t know anyone who does bad coffee in Melbourne and if they do they close very quickly. I like that we’re snobby about that.”

For Megan Gale, it’s an inner-city oasis where she can escape with her two-year-old son, River, to commune with nature.

Channel Nine presenter Lauren Phillips’ special Melbourne secret is a quirky, dog-friendly cafe in a restored 1960s caravan – it’s “very, very Fitzroy” and just a bit hipster.

Kate Langbroek, radio presenter and mother of four, doesn’t go out clubbing as much as she once did, but once a month she can be found letting her hair down at a city rock bar. “When you walk in there you feel something good is going to happen. The next morning is going to be terrible but that night is going to be spectacular.”

Eclectic, diverse and just a little bit hipster.

That’s Fitzroy, and Channel Nine Postcards presenter Lauren Phillips likes it that way. That’s where she has her Melbourne “secret”. Lauren is a proud Fitzroy resident and, with her husband and two dogs, often visits a quirky cafe in Moor Street (just off Brunswick Street) called the Grub Food Van. “It’s very Fitzroy, very relaxed, the people are super-friendly,” Lauren says.

Set in a 1965 Airstream van originally from Iowa in the US, the cafe is described on its website as “a giant oversized grub in aluminium casing”. The cafe features produce grown in the greenhouse on site and there’s even table tennis.

Crucially for Lauren, it’s dog-friendly. “The crowd is quite eclectic and there are lots of people with dogs,” she says. “We go in the morning with the dogs and have a coffee, or go down at night and have tacos and a couple of beers, dogs there as well. It’s nice to find places where we can take them with us.” ●

At 81 (“I’m 81 going on 1000”), the chairman of the Bob Maguire foundation leads a life that would buckle people half his age, so he needs to find some solace at his secret spot.

“There’s an oak tree in the Botanic Gardens inside the main gate, just down from the caretaker’s cottage,” he says. “I go and sit on a seat and watch the leaves falling and wait for the one with my name on it. I stare at it from a seat, which has got on it, ‘This seat is in memory of our deceased daughter’ – or similar words.

“The Botanic Gardens has always been good for me over 40 years. Having no wife, child, mother or manager, I decided Mother Nature would nurture me at her bosom.

It means I’m well and chirpy, I can still look on the bright side of life.” ●

George Calombaris is a happy man when he’s standing at the bar of his Melbourne “secret” DOC Espresso with a coffee, chatting to staff and customers about his great passion football (soccer).

“DOC is my favourite place to hang out,” says the chef and MasterChef judge.

“I’ve been going there since day one. It’s gone from being this little hole in the wall to now – still a hole in the wall, but it’s got a delicatessen next door. “The coffee’s incredible and you can stand and drink it, you don’t have to sit down.

watch the world go by and off you go. We all discuss the football and argue. That’s what I love about it, we all become coaches.”

He says the deli next door has the “best mortadella and cured meats. He’s got all the good stuff. When I’m taking international chefs around I’ll take them there.”

And, he says, they take coffee seriously.

“Don’t go there and ask for an extra-large cappuccino because you’re not going to get it,” he says. “I love that. In Melbourne we’re obsessed by coffee. If you want a milk-based coffee, we have the best in the world … I like that we’re snobby about that.” ●

It’s a long way from the glamorous world of modelling and filmmaking. Megan Gale relishes the chance to at least simulate the feeling of escape from the city at the Collingwood Children’s Farm. “It’s a really beautiful family environment,” says Megan.

“I absolutely love it. Before having my son I used to love going there for the markets when they were on once a month, because they had the best produce. Now I enjoy it on a whole new level with my son (River, who’s two).

“It’s remarkable how removed you feel.

You could be up in the Dandenongs or up at Daylesford. It’s very calm and peaceful. And they look after the animals so beautifully there. ” ●

The Oscar-winning animator recently moved to the CBD to live and is rediscovering its hidden charms. From his place he can see the MCG, Government House and Federation Square, but it’s the fountain wall at the City Square that has captivated the artist in him.

On the wall, which uses recycled water, people began sticking up messages and pictures made from dried leaves. It is the most temporary of “installations”.

“They stopped the water wall while the drought was on,” Adam says. “When it was turned on again someone stuck a leaf to it and people started making pictures and writing slogans. It’s one of those spontaneous things, without any government interference,” he says.

“I don’t know how long the leaves stick before they fall off or get ripped off each night by cleaners. The more those sorts of things happen in any city the better. It makes the city more liveable.” ●

As a busy radio presenter (co-presenter on KIIS 101.1’s Hughesy and Kate Kate) and mother of four, Kate Langbroek doesn’t go out clubbing as much as she once did. Still, once a month isn’t too bad. “I like to go to my husband’s bar Cherry, in the city. It’s a rock bar. When you walk in there you feel something good is going to happen. The next morning is going to be terrible but that night is going to be spectacular,” she says.

“It’s a fun, free, crazy place. You could get in wearing a vintage 1970s velvet suit, but not an office suit. It’s a place where you walk in the door and you are your funnest self.

“When Lady Gaga was in town she turned up and danced on the bar,” she recalls. “We had left about 20 minutes earlier. I was with my husband and his business partner James Young – this is indicative of the place – not one of the people who worked there thought to call either of the partners.” ●

During a life in sport and business, John Bertrand and his wife Rasa have for decades found solace walking in Fawkner Park, South Yarra, with their dogs. It’s not only a chance to enjoy the wide open beauty of the park, but an opportunity to have the time and space to talk. “It’s my Zen moment,” says the yachting legend and president of Swimming Australia.

“We go right round the circuit and we’ve done that for many years. We live close by. It’s beautiful. We’ve built businesses, we’ve solved problems, we’ve solved challenges. It’s the opportunity for a debrief.”

John says the long walks have helped inspire rumination and reflection. “Men, for some reason, don’t talk very easily unless they’re walking and talking,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to talk and to listen. he story of Melbourne’s rise as a global beauty hub is peppered with household names: Poppy King (the queen of matte lipstick), Aesop (Dennis Paphitis’ apothecary-style brand spawned a legion of imitators), Kevin Murphy (the man behind Kylie Minogue’s tresses who created a cult-status eponymous haircare brand) and Natalie Bloom (whose Bloom Cosmetics started the whole craze of cute-as-a-button cosmetics).

These homegrown mega brands conquered the world long before social media, brand ambassadors and beauty bloggers.

But Melbourne has not rested on its beauty laurels. The industry is again abuzz as brands jockey for position to be the next global beauty powerhouse.

We caught up with some of the contenders.

Keston and Jeremy Muijs are poster boys for Melbourne’s uber stylish, but it’s not their sartorial smarts that have people talking – it’s their brand, Grown Alchemist.

The brothers started out in design and product development. While working in Miami, they met a holistic food enthusiast who made them question the way they were living and consuming.

“It was drummed into our heads that what we eat and drink is just as important as what we put on our skin,” Keston says.

The brothers drew on their talents and sought out the best scientists and formulators to create something sustainable and effective.

“Grown Alchemist products are engineered with the highest concentrates with innovative formulas,” Jeremy says. “It is a balance of nature and science.”

Having launched in February, Stevie K Cosmetics is the new kid on the block. But Kate Fissenden, the brains behind the lipstick brand, has big plans. “I want to empower women,” she says. “I’m very stubborn and determined and want women to change the boys’-club culture in business.”

Having worked in all aspects of beauty in Australia, Kate tired of the feeling that men call all the shots. She set out to create a brand with chutzpah and personality, made in Melbourne. She created everything for Stevie K, from design to website, herself. She plans to grow the brand and is already fielding offers from Asia, the US and Europe. She got the ball rolling with 12 lipsticks.

“Every girl loves a lipstick but I want Stevie K girls to wear them and fix their cars.

It is individuality, empowerment and a little rock’n’roll,” she says.

A savvy bunch of five young people has taken Melbourne’s obsession with coffee to a new level. Their range of crave-worthy products is all made with coffee beans or, to be exact, grounds.

Their made-in-Melbourne body scrub has no nasty anythings, just a good dose of caffeine that targets dry skin, stretch marks, cellulite, eczema, psoriasis, acne and scarring.

owner, hit on the idea when he mentioned that some of his customers were asking for the waste grounds to use as an exfoliant.

Erika Geraerts, another of the group, says: “We got thoroughly excited and got to work immediately, only to find out what the humble coffee bean could do for the skin.”

In no time, Frank the brand was born. The group gave Frank a complete personality, aided by a cleverly crafted Instagram presence, and the tills were soon ringing all around the world. In two years, the brand was turning over $20 million. It is still available only online. ●

Anna Ross moved from Dunedin, New Zealand, to Melbourne in 2009 and stumbled into jewellery making. During a design brainstorm session, she decided to launch a range of rings with complementary nail polishes. That was the start of nail polish brand, Kester Black. From six colours in 2012, the range has swelled to 60.

“I did not want any old nail polish,” Anna says. “I wanted the best of the best. I wanted staying power but also fresh colours and the polishes are 100 per cent vegan and are five-free.” (No toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin or camphor.)

Each season she replaces four colours.

“It’s not there as a gimmick. It has a kind of sophistication that you’d never dream was the work of a teenager,” Paul says.

Last year another leading short film festival Tropfest tanked amid criticism that it favoured a limited breed of over-polished, jokey shorts. Although Matt Day and Brendan Cowell’s Title Card could easily fit that description, Paul says one of his program’s strengths is it shows exactly how varied the format can be.

“We don’t have any rules. I don’t mind if I’m watching a film that’s technically primitive if I can hear the voice inside it.

A lot of the most exciting feature filmmakers keep going back to the short-film medium.

Beautiful animation. Werewolves. Opening night for this year’s St Kilda Film Festival has it all. Paul Harris, director of Melbourne’s snappiest film fest, says putting together the launch program of short flicks is tantamount to crafting the perfect mixtape.

“We try to offer a smorgasbord of what’s to come,” Paul says. “You’re tantalising people, telling them if you come to the film festival there’s a lot more where that came from.”

Paul’s top picks include the Australian premiere of documentary Strudel Sisters (“a colourful and affecting film about a vanishing way of life”) and the world premiere of Henry Thong’s Content Censored, which was submitted for the Under The Radar showcase for teenage filmmakers. This year, two films from this category have been promoted to screen in the main program of 100 shorts – the first time the festival has let young directors crash the grown-ups’ party.

I go to i25 Espresso every day. They’re open early and the coffee’s always quick and good.

I’m the king of takeaway food. I single-handedly keep a lot of takeaway businesses open. My newest favourite is Pink Flake fish and chips. The hand-cut chips get me across the line – they are divine.

For time to yourself?

That often includes the dog, Barkly. I grab a coffee and walk to the Peanut Farm oval or St Kilda dog beach and watch Barkly have fun.

For a head-turning new outfit?

Nique – a local brand and great clothes.

For a big night out?

They’re rare for me, to be honest. But maybe to Doulton Bar because it reminds me of my glory days, back in 2001, single, hanging out with my friends and trying to pick up.

I take my kids to the adventure playground.

When my three-year-old daughter says she needs help at the top of the climbing frame, there’s no better workout for me.

The promise Is there anything more romantic than a century-old theme park by the beach?

Despite its brightly painted facade, Luna Park is almost sepia-toned with nostalgia.

Its centrepiece, the Scenic Railway, is a 104-year-old rollercoaster that forms the park’s perimeter. It’s the oldest continually operated rollercoaster in the world. Its dips and rises make it Luna Park’s most popular ride, attracting the attention of the American Coaster Enthusiasts club, which honoured it with a Coaster Classic Award.

The reality A colleague once told me she goes on the Scenic Railway every time she visits St Kilda.

I relate: memories of heady summer nights, heading to gigs at the Espy or the Palais, or just mucking around on St Kilda Beach are always bookended by a ride on St Kilda’s old dame of a rollercoaster. That’s the beauty of the ride: you don’t have to pay entry to the whole park, just grab a single ticket and go.

You’ll line up with excited kids, teenagers and families until it’s your turn to take a seat in

pairs in the old open carriages. You’ll love the views: the beach and bay and the Esplanade sweeping away to peaking city skyscrapers.

The pain factor If you’re scared of heights, you should probably give this one a miss.

The pay-off This is old-fashioned fun at its best. The Scenic Railway straddles a fine line – it’s exhilarating but not too scary.

Who’s behind the counter?

There’s a centre data screen, which proved simple to operate, but I would have liked a bigger tachometer – it’s a small digital display to the left of the speedometer that can be difficult to see in bright light. Steering wheel controls for the audio and optional cruise control are handy and intuitive.

Rear seat room is limited and will really only suit children over any distance. The boot is generous for this size of car and is well-shaped for luggage. The car can be a little sluggish off the mark but once it gets going it’s quite perky. And it’s easy to drive and park, with excellent visibility. �

it’s offered as a sedan as well as a hatch. As with all of the current crop of Mazdas, the sedan looks terrific; I doubt it will sell as well as the hatch but it can only increase Mazda’s sales numbers.

The base model sedan at $16,990 is very good buying with a light and fast six-speed manual. The manual is so easy that spending another $2000 on the six-speed auto seems a waste. I had one complaint; first gear seems a little high, making a take-off on light pedal pressure a bit fussy. It’s best to give it a bit more gas than normal. The little 1.5-litre is surprisingly willing. It overtakes nicely and the fuel economy is first-class. The ride can get a bit sharp over rough surfaces and when pushed through tight corners the rear end gets light, but this is in line with what you expect from a car of this size and weight. �

Within the eclectic house, there’s a hint of old-world glamour, tempered by abundant wood finishes. Walls are decorated with paintings created by Kate’s mother Cherie Ceberano, who has a studio in the front room. Martin Grant and I grew up together and used to count ants on the sidewalk. It was mum who suggested he make my wedding dress but I wasn’t sure if he would – he was famous and living in Paris. Mum rang him when we were in London and he said, “Yes, of course”. We flew to Paris, where I got fitted. I got married in 1996.

Our pool room wall is dedicated to my ARIA awards. I won my first ARIA in 1989 for Best Female Artist. I’ve only just put all these up in the past month. It’s a reminder of all the hard work and achievements I’ve accumulated throughout my 35-year career.

H A N D PA I N T E D M AT O N G U I TA R When I was pregnant with my daughter Gypsy, now 12, I became obsessed with painting. This is a fond memory of the day I was possessed to paint a Maton acoustic guitar shell, which belonged to my stepfather Ben Balfour. It lives in my studio and looks like a Russian turn-of-the-century artefact.

anja Stevanovic and her husband Angelo are Port Melbourne devotees.

The couple have lived in the beachside suburb for two years, falling in love with the lifestyle – walks along the beach, lazy Sundays at local cafes and boutique shopping. Even as the weather grows cooler, the beachside appeal remains.

“Everything we need is here without having to start the car,” Tanja says. “We walk everywhere. You just need to rug up a bit more this time of year.

“We go for strolls along the beach and sometimes we walk into the city … If you visit the local cafes, it’s nice and cosy.”

Tanja and Angelo are one of the first couples to buy at Alumuna, a luxurious new apartment development by Peter Maher. It is being built just a short stroll – a mere 60 metres – from Port Melbourne beach.

The stylish, Wood Marsh-designed, five-storey, L-shaped building fronts 9 Johnston Street in Port Melbourne and backs on to Rouse Street. It offers four two-bedroom apartments, 16 three-bedroom apartments (eight with studies and three bathrooms) and two penthouses; 22 apartments in all.

The contemporary design of the Alumuna building incorporates hydronic underfloor heating – perfect for keeping warm in the winter months – and clever technical elements to keep noise to a minimum. The apartments have stunning views of the beach and the CBD skyline, which add to their appeal.

Tanja and Angelo bought a three-bedroom single-level apartment with a study after seeing advertising for Alumuna. “We were walking past and we saw it one day and bought the next,” Tanja says.

Alumuna’s proximity to the freeways was another selling point, because Angelo works in sales, with daily trips to see clients.

Great local places to eat were another drawcard.

“I said to Angelo, ‘With all these cafes here, we don’t really need a kitchen’,” Tanja says with a laugh.

According to statistics, 72 per cent of house-hunters buy again in the suburb they love.

The couple had been searching for a new apartment for a while. Angelo says they realised there’s plenty of demand for bigger apartments, but few on offer.

“It’s [Alumuna] really delivering to that part of the market because there’s a lot of two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments out there but there just

aren’t a lot of apartments as big as a house,” he says.

Angelo and Tanja are pleased their new apartment is roomy. “It’s bigger than the houses we grew up in,” he says.

The couple are excited about their new home and are looking forward to moving in.

hen a client asked the team at Melbourne’s Nexus Designs to create the interiors for a coastal house in New York’s exclusive holiday hotspot, The Hamptons, the designers based their relaxed, understated look around a striking Roy Lichtenstein artwork. “We responded to the simple architecture of the mid-century, California Case Study-inspired house,” says creative director Sonia Simpfendorfer says. “The quality of light was beautiful and the architecture and landscape creates a delightful, genuine getaway.” Sonia reveals the design team’s five key considerations when creating this striking interior. lawns and trees. here’s a cosy enclave of Hampton, a stroll from the beach and coffee shops, where properties rarely hit the market. There have been just 10 sales in the past decade in its centrepiece, Bolton Avenue, estate agent Stefan Whiting says – and increasingly, they’re pursued and snapped up off-market.
