Australian racism is rarely vicious or spiteful or dangerous: we just aren’t that angry a people. Instead, it is casual, and joking and light-hearted. And for those who ache to be seen as every bit a member of Australian society as everybody else, it is not funny – it is an unending sorrow. \

FiGht FOr 100-year-Old tree Almost four months after a 100-year-old Middle Park palm tree was earmarked for removal by a power company, its owner is still fighting for its survival.

Matthew Fagan received a notice from CitiPower in February that the Phoenix canariensis, planted at his Canterbury Road property in the 1890s, was earmarked for removal to comply with bushfire regulations.

“They have all gone to ground, everyone is scared to say anything,” Mr Fagan said.

“CitiPower have not done what they have promised to do publicly and in their contract and on their website [and] offer costed ‘technical’ alternatives.”

Mr Fagan has spent thousands of dollars in the past decade ensuring the tree is preserved.

“Everyone has resiled from the absurd idea of a bushfire, even though that is the only legislation which allows them and allegedly obliges them to cut trees,” he said.

Correspondence from CitiPower dated April 5, seen by TWR, confirms Mr Fagan’s belief that the palm tree “does not currently present a fire or safety hazard”.

However, Mr Fagan said he had had no further communication and was waiting for “the chainsaws to rock up”.

He has also suggested that the power lines

along Canterbury Road be put underground.

“CitiPower recently replaced one large power pole outside 98 Canterbury Road and on removal it was obviously the site of a huge nest of termites which had ravaged our terrace houses, causing damage in the order of a hundred thousand dollars,” Mr Fagan said.

He said instead of paying to replace and maintain an “antique system of dead trees in the ground”, which he believes would have a huge cost comparable to the amount to remove the poles entirely, the power lines could be put underground, saving large future costs.

CitiPower spokesman Drew Douglas said the company was still working with Mr Fagan and others to find a resolution for the palm tree.

“Currently there’s no further works being done on the tree until this is resolved and we are looking at investigating technical alternatives,” Mr Douglas said.

Mr Douglas also said there was a process for relocating power lines and the cost was usually afforded by the individuals or organisation making the request.

The Bluff Road hospital is one of 40 hospitals sharing in $1 million from the state government to make them safer for nurses, doctors and other staff. Health Minister David Davis said the $25,000 for Sandringham would also help management develop policies to deal with aggressive patients more effectively. ‘‘Staff should be able to carry out their work without the potential or threat of violence,’’ he said. Duress alarms have been installed in 24 state hospitals over the past year. The government is also planning longer jail sentences for those who attack hospital emergency staff or other emergency workers while performing their duties. \ TM

JUst the tiCket Local project “Ticket to Work” has won a 2013 Victorian Education and Excellence award. The school-based apprenticeship and traineeship program for students with intellectual disabilities was piloted at Berendale School in Hampton East and Montague Continuing Education Centre in South Melbourne, with a range of partner organisations. Twenty-five students undertook apprenticeships and traineeships while completing their secondary studies.

Hundreds of Hampton residents fear a gateless pedestrian crossing and unfenced railway tracks are endangering lives.

Almost 700 locals living near the crossing at Grenville and Orlando streets, where most of the track is unfenced on both sides, have petitioned Bayside Council to pressure the state government to make the area safer ‘‘before it’s too late’’.

Residents want automatic gates installed and the track fenced on both sides within the vicinity.

Key petitioner Jean Coyne said the crossing was archaic and appalling. ‘‘We need change before someone in our community dies,’’ she said. ‘‘Often you don’t hear the trains coming and they can be obscured by a passing train.

All of a sudden they’re there and you have to be nimble to cross quickly. It’s hard if you’ve got young kids in prams or on bikes, or you’re elderly.’’

Father of three David Hunt said the crossing was extremely dangerous to all but the most alert and agile pedestrians. ‘‘It’s a very busy crossing, especially with kids and students. My wife has had a near miss with our children, which terrified them

Since residents met with mayor Stephen Hartney and Cr Laurie Evans on site to state their case, some fencing has been erected along the track, but not enough as far as residents are concerned. ‘‘They recently updated the zig-zag area fencing material but have not changed its shape. In fact, if anything it is more of a

direct path to the tracks than before,’’ Mr Hunt said.

A woman was dragged into bushes during an attempted sexual assault as she exercised on a bayside walking track on May 27.

The 40-year-old woman was walking along a beach track near Beach Road and Edward Street in Sandringham about 3pm when she was grabbed by a man.

It is believed the man then dragged the Sandringham woman into bushes, where he attempted to sexually assault her, police said.

It is believed the victim fought off the man and screamed for help, prompting another female walker to come to her assistance.

The man then fled the scene and was last seen running north along the beach track.

The woman was taken to the Monash Medical Centre for treatment.

Detectives from Moorabbin Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are appealing for public help to find the offender, who is described as being aged in his 20s and Caucasian in appearance with blond shoulder-length hair.

A former St Michael’s Grammar School student has been awarded a coveted Premier’s VCE award for her 2012 studies in dance. Jessica Sofarnos, 18, (pictured centre) received an almost perfect 49 out of a possible 50 and was this week recognised with the honour. The award recognises students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their VCE. “Quite honestly, I was a little hesitant to do VCE Dance on the basis that I didn’t want to turn my passion into a subject where it became ‘homework’,” Ms Sofarnos said. “However I had danced for 12 years and I knew, at the end of the day, that the enjoyment and incredible fulfilment I get from it would be enough to push me through the year.” The performer trains with 16th Street Actors Studio and has auditioned for musicals since finishing school. “I hope this will one day allow me to perform professionally,” she said. \ LB

Charity group St Kilda Mums finally has a new home.

Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community, the not-for-profit will no longer have to reject donations because of lack of storage space.

St Kilda Mum Jessica Macpherson said it took just three weeks to raise the $30,000 needed to secure the two-year lease on its new Vale Street warehouse.

The group will relocate this week.

“We are very excited to have a home that will allow us to receive more donations and help more welfare agencies and families in need,” Ms Macpherson said.

“It will take us some time to get up and running and our main focus during this transition is to maintain our safety and quality standards. These standards are central to the service we deliver.”

St Kilda Mums is run by five mothers from the St Kilda area, with the help of more than 200 volunteers.

The group collects nursery equipment and children’s clothing donations – recycling cots, prams, bassinets, clothes and other baby essentials by cleaning and repairing them and ensuring items meet national safety requirements.

books recounts tale of st kilda family’s grand global driving adventure

One car, one year, one planet: that was the aim of an adventurous St Kilda family — and they did it. Why, how and when is beautifully documented in a book recently launched at South Melbourne’s Railway Hotel by the ABC’s Jon Faine, who has also driven around the world with his son.

Drive Around the World recounts the highs and lows of the family’s $100,000, 360-day road trip through 25 countries. Based on the blog kept throughout their trip, the book also lists every music track they listened to on each leg.

(then aged 10 and 7), left Melbourne in April 2008 in their Nissan Patrol for Darwin, from where the vehicle – which they still own – was shipped to Singapore.

Apart from ocean crossings, they drove through parts of the US and Canada, Europe, India and south-east Asia. All up they drove 36,984 kilometres, with Danny behind the wheel and Sandra navigating, helped by the kids. ‘‘We didn’t have a GPS, it was maps all the way,’’ Sandra said.

The family’s favourite countries were Croatia, Turkey and Laos, while Albania’s roads were the scariest. ‘‘The kids love food and were very adventurous cuisine-wise, such as eating

buffalo in Laos,’’ Sandra said.

Sandra is now art and cultural team leader with Port Phillip Council, while Danny works in family violence prevention.

Maddy is at Elwood College and Raffy at St Kilda Primary. ‘‘We told the kids that we’ve spent their inheritance but they’re cool with that – we’d do it all over again, absolutely.

“It was worth every cent to show the kids that the world is full of people who are all so different yet basically all want the same thing in life: safety, love, family.’’ \ TM Drive Around the World, Hybrid Publishers, is now in bookstores, $35.

The free legal service was established by four lawyers in 1973, before Legal Aid and was one of the first organisations of its kind to afford legal help to those who could not pay.

The service now has seven paid staff and a

bank of about 60 volunteers, which includes barristers and solicitors that help people with civil and criminal matters.

Community lawyer Jacinta Maloney, who started with the service in 1997, said the centre had specialist initiatives that included drug outreach and family violence programs.

She said lawyers with the service not only helped people with their

individual cases but also worked on law reform, policy work, project management and community education.

“It is rewarding being able to help people within local community and improve people’s access to justice,” Ms Maloney said. “Our service was established before Legal Aid, we were started to help people that were unable to access legal advice, a time when they had to represent themselves.”

Two veteran activists are standing as Greens candidates for the federal election in Goldstein and Melbourne Ports.

Bentleigh resident Rose Read, who grew up in Brighton East and trained as a teacher, has worked in child welfare and social planning, women’s services, and on community, environmental and sustainability issues professionally and as a volunteer for decades.

After standing for council last year, the first Greens candidate in Glen Eira’s Tucker ward, she has developed a taste for political activism. She believes the Greens will do well in Goldstein on September 14, despite Liberal Andrew Robb’s tight grip on the reins. ‘‘I think the electorate is realising that our lifestyles must change and are becoming more receptive to the Greens, realising that we do seriously have a vision for the country,’’ she said. park sex rendezvous turns violent crime

A Mount Waverley man was allegedly attacked with a knife after a meeting at a Middle Park playground for sex that turned ugly.

About 10.15pm on May 22, the victim allegedly met with a 31-year-old Middle Park man at a location arranged on a website, police said.

It is alleged the Mount Waverley man had agreed to pay $250 for sexual services before meeting at the park.

It is believed that before any services were exchanged, the alleged offender produced a knife and demanded the money from the younger man.

It is alleged that a scuffle then took place and the offender ran, entering several backyards and scaling rooftops to get away, police said.

It is believed the victim chased the offender in his car before he got away.

The alleged offender was later found at his home and taken into police custody.

He was released and is expected to be charged on summons with attempted armed robbery. \ LAURA BANKS

took a job as a secretary at Newtown Boys High School.

His boyhood neighbourhood turned out to be useful for an aspiring actor. “I was certainly one-out (wanting to be an actor) but it didn’t work against me. In fact it probably worked in my favour. Although I was quite sporty, I was also very good with my mouth. I could impersonate people, I could entertain people.

“In all honesty I was a bit of a smartie. And I probably incited some violence in some instances because of my mouth. I could stir the pot. I didn’t mature until quite late so I did a lot of things back then that I look back on and think, ‘How on Earth did I get to that place’?”

In his 20s he worked as a bingo caller to help fund his acting studies. “Initially the numbers came out of a biscuit tin and I had to put them on a piece of cardboard in front of me and then we graduated to using an electronic system so there was a little machine in front of me that was finger-touch. But if you left it on the touch button for more than a fraction of a second about six numbers would

But, as PETER WILMOTH found, he is so much more in SeaChange did for strawberry blondes what Johnny Depp did for moustaches – and in his conversation there are echoes of that insouciant, shoulder-shrugging charm that set many an ABC viewer’s heart beating.

With his wry sense of humour and lack of pretension, Wenham is a natural storyteller. He takes me back to Sydney suburb Marrickville in the 1970s, in a household where he was the last child of seven. “There was a boy at the top, then there were five girls in the middle,” he says.

“It was a very working-class suburb. It was – and quite possibly could still be – the most multicultural suburb in Australia. Back then it contained something like 87 different nationalities. Anglo-Saxons were in a minority. Predominant ethnicities back then were European: Greeks and Italians, a lot of Lebanese.

“I loved it. My next-door neighbours were Greek. In our house I’d have dinner at 5pm and then I’d jump the fence into (their) house and have a Greek meal with them.”

I ask if, as the baby, a lot of parental attention flowed his way. “If you ask my siblings they’d say, definitely.

They’d say that I was spoiled because of it, and that’s probably fair to say, I suppose. It was a very loud, animated dinner table. When the girls in the family started getting boyfriends and fiancés and they’d come round for dinner, I can still remember the look on their faces, not quite believing the raucous level of noise that was surrounding them.

“There were quite a few years where most of us were in the house, a relatively small house, although when I was a kid I used to think it was enormous. For a while my bed was situated at the bottom of the dining room table. I didn’t actually have a bedroom myself and I didn’t actually think that was unusual. It was just what I knew. So I’d wake up in the morning and go and get the tablecloth and set the table. That was one of my jobs.”

His father worked in the same job for 49 years, and when Wenham was old enough for school, his mother

Wenham became a nationally recognised figure in 1998 when he appeared as the nonchalant Diver Dan in the ABC series SeaChange. “When it screened here I was in Hawaii filming a movie,” he says. “SeaChange aired the same time as the film The Boys, which got some really fantastic critical reception overseas. That helped open up an international career for me.”

hen he returned home he had a taste of real fame. “I became instantly aware that there was a recognition factor in this country that I had never encountered before,” he says.

“That was a little bit weird but it was nothing that was unsettling.”

He was even voted “Australia’s sexiest man alive”.

“Yes,” he says. “But by god knows who. People like to write these things to sell magazines, I think.”

He remembers an amusing story about the moniker.

“I went with (The Bank film producer) Robert Connolly to New Zealand not long after that. Robert and I were on morning television and this rather strange character talked about the fact that, ‘You are the sexiest man in Australia, but I can’t see it’.” Wenham laughs.

He had a remarkable taste of being in big-budget films when he was in New Zealand shooting Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. “There was one moment on set that I thought, ‘I will pinch myself at this moment’ because I realised I was in something that would probably never be repeated on this scale.

“On a field they had built a two-mile (3.2-kilometre) road for a tracking vehicle that was going to hold cameras to drive along as all these guys on horses ride along this field while they shot them. When the horses arrived and everyone was fully armoured, and then they

avid Wenham wanted to be an actor since he was a young boy, but in the working-class Sydney suburb where he grew up, it didn’t seem to be a dream that was going to come true. “I knew what I would have liked to do, but I didn’t actually believe it was possible,” he says.

“The generation now is infused with that sense of self-belief and confidence. I was probably at the end of that era where people had to know their place and you don’t actually move out of where you belong.”

It’s fortunate for film and theatre-goers that Wenham was able to transcend this mindset and become one of the country’s great actors, appearing in lavishly funded productions (Lord of the Rings and 300) and smaller works (The Bank and even The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, made with his late friend Steve Irwin).

We are talking at the Melbourne Theatre Company’s South Melbourne headquarters, where Wenham is in rehearsal for an upcoming production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and he’s not going to let a head cold get in the way of telling his story.

But he’s done small films, too. He and Magda Szubanski made a film with [the] Steve Irwin. “He was an amazing man. What you saw was what you got.

There was no act there. I saw him with animals. He was a man with a pretty amazing gift.” Wenham read a poem at Irwin’s funeral in 2006.

Wenham comes from a strong Labor family. His father was a close friend of Whitlam government minister Fred Daly. Wenham handed out literature on behalf of Maxine McKew in her successful attempt to dislodge John Howard from the once-safe Liberal seat of Benelong. “What drove me to do it? I suppose frustration with what was happening in the country.”

When he was young he considered a political career “but the politics of politics is the thing that frustrates.

Am I a Labor man now? Not necessarily. My politics have changed I think. I don’t affiliate with any particular party.”

Wenham’s passions outside work are eating great food, dance and contemporary art. He would have loved to have pursued a career in dance. “In an alternative universe – I don’t have the body for it and I’m not right for it – to be a dancer would have been amazing.”

He loves AFL and the Sydney Swans. His passion for football is interesting considering he grew up in Sydney’s rugby league heartland, and he tells a moving story about why.

“When I was quite young my father introduced me to a friend of his, Les Barfoot, who lived not far from us. He was a butcher from South Melbourne. On Saturdays I used to walk past the Town Hall milk bar on Marrickville Road. My parents used to give me money and I’d buy a packet of jubes for his wife, Doreen, who was confined to a wheelchair. I’d give the jubes to Doreen and I’d watch on a black-and-white TV what

Wenham is swathed in a winter jacket today, so it’s difficult to get a handle on how the one-time “sexiest man alive” is going physically. But he tells a story about his rigorous training schedule to get in shape for 300, the epic retelling of the battle of Thermopylae.

The need for buffness meant five months of “ridiculous training”. Along with the cast and stunt crew, Wenham trained with a strength and conditioning expert, Mark Twight, who helped give him and the others the appearance of Spartan warriors.

“I found myself in a peak of physical fitness that I wasn’t in in my 20s and 30s. I had to get very fit.”

Wenham and his partner of 20 years, Kate Agnew, have daughters Eliza Jane, nine, and Millie, four. His thoughts on fatherhood? “It’s the best thing,” he says. “It’s the No. 1 thing in my life. It’s the thing that gives me the most joy, being with the kids, seeing them change.”

At 47 he’s an older dad. “I think we’ll be fine with these two kids. Would I go again? No.” He may be widely recognised as one of the country’s strongest talents, but reputation counts for nothing at home. What do the kids think of their dad’s acting?

“Sometimes at home they think my acting stinks,” he says, smiling. “I think I’m rather funny sometimes but they just roll their eyes at me.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

If you dig a little deeper into the highly authoritative world that is the internet, you’ll find parents talking about their indigo kids’ past lives, and websites that describe indigo children as being able to see fairies and dead relatives, and to travel to other worlds while they’re sleeping.

I can’t believe I’ve come so far into my parenting journey without any knowledge of these little blue kids. They even have summer camps, conferences and counselling sessions for them, but one can only assume that all happens in the US. All this time I thought my kids were just plain naughty, when in fact they could be part of a rare, gifted über race.

Maybe now I know why the six-year-old won’t get out of the bath when I tell her to, and why it’s always me, not her little royal highness, who needs to squeeze the water out of waterlogged Lalaloopsies so she can sleep with them without her pillow getting wet. It’s her sense of entitlement, her absolute belief that she’s here for a greater purpose.

Ah, but wait. There’s no empirical evidence to support the indigo child theory and academics have slammed the concept as a way for parents to avoid actually admitting their kids might need some discipline, or a professional diagnosis.

In fact, the concept has been linked with disorders such as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder and autism.

’ve just squirted the water out of the heads of two Lalaloopsy dolls after they’d been in the bath and if you think I wrote that in a language other than English, you’re not the mother of a six-year-old indigo child.

I just heard of such a thing. Indigo children, that is, not Lalaloopsy dolls – those spooky little toys I know too well.

They have fake button eyes and are actually meant to look like they’re handmade. But they’re plastic and made in China, which is the strange topsy-turvy world we live in now.

But no, I’m talking about indigo children. I actually just discovered the phenomenon when a mate linked a story about them on Facebook.

An indigo child, according to Wikipedia, is a new-age theory that suggests some children possess supernatural traits or abilities. The idea originated in the 1970s from a parapsychologist and psychic called Nancy Ann Tappe, who said she began to notice many children being born with an “indigo” aura. The woman is synesthetic, which means she sees things and people as colours.

(A quick segue. I went to see a psychic recently. It was a silly spur-of-the-moment thing where I had to kill time and there I was right in front of a “healing” shop, and the aroma of incense drew me and my $50 in, and then down a garden path to nowhere. But it really was nice to find out I am an IT professional and the mother of two boys, one of whom is about to get married!)

Anyway, back to the psychic who sees blue children.

Apparently, they all have a series of similar characteristics – they are empathetic, curious, strong-willed, independent and sometimes thought of by others as a bit strange.

They have a clear sense of self-definition, are often highly intelligent, but naturally of course, they’re anti-authoritarian.

he Brix is dead. Long live Hammer & Tong. While The Brix was a shooting star that flared briefly off Brunswick Street in late 2011, its successor has an air of longevity about it. Not least because it opened modestly, serving only breakfast and lunch, and quietly won over a local following devoted to its bright brunch menu of truffled duck egg on toast and blueberry pancakes with popping candy ice-cream. The Dukes coffee also gets an enthusiastic nod of approval from the Fitzroyalty.

In more recent months, H&T started doing dinners, just a few nights a week, and the results are equally encouraging. Chef Simon Ward has steered away from the high-concept dining of his Vue de Monde days in favour of a more casual, almost rustic menu featuring such standards as a farmer’s plate and fisherman’s pie.

His food’s nicely matched by the small and tasty wine list compiled by co-owner and former Jacques Reymond sommelier Dennis Ferreira who, similarly, has abandoned his three-hatted past for a more democratic approach to drinking. You can get your hands on a suave trebbiano for $28 – that’s for the whole bottle, not a glass – and Ferreira plans to flesh out the list with more interesting Euro grape varieties in coming months. Cheers to that.

The restaurant’s interiors have also been stripped of pretension. Gone are the $3000 Mooi pig table and the massive macramé sculpture that hung from the ceiling like a dinosaur skeleton in the Brix era. In their place there’s some new crate-style shelving behind the bar, and the rear courtyard has been covered over for all-weather use. But the bones of the place are much the same. Silly to waste money on a new fit-out when the old one will do nicely.

Altogether it’s a lot more relaxed and friendly at 412 Brunswick Street. Ferreira and his team work the floor with ready smiles and smart service, and Ward does his bit in the kitchen to lift the mood.

FisHERMAN’s It’s hard not to feel upbeat after tucking into his piE soft-shell crab slider (a mini-burger, painfully trendy).

It’s a torpedo-shaped, pillow-soft brioche filled with lightly battered crab, a zing of coriander and a smother of mayo, cut with Thai sriracha chilli sauce.

A recent menu change supersized the slider to a burger, which is no bad thing. But with menu changes in the mouth to ooze their mushy, moreish mess onto come mixed emotions … I’m not too fussed about the taste buds. McNuggets for grown-ups. seeing the back of the wagyu – charry outside, But there’s plenty to like on the latest menu, nicely ruddy inside and served sliced on a plank including glazed pots of piping-hot whitebait with a dish of hollandaise, but the meat’s crusted with salt and served with a smoked It’s hard annoyingly chewy. Or the slow-roasted paprika aioli for added interest. And the chicken, a sprawling platter of endive leaves fisherman’s pie, with its impeccably golden not to feel studded with chunks of tarragon-and-sagepastry lid, whose buttery flakes add appealing upbeat scented bird and nuggets of slightly too-dry crunch to the creamy, chunky muddle of cod stuffing. I’d give it 6/10 for flavour but 4/10 for pieces and prawns bound with bechamel and presentation, so no great loss. richly seamed with dill. It’s a winning antidote to I do miss the lamb sweetbread wontons, though, winter. lamb ham, eggplant hummus, olive bread and cheese.

Lamb ham screws with my brain because it tastes more like ham than lamb. And why is it suddenly so trendy?

When did it morph from Arabian Peninsula staple to trendy Western delicacy? What’s wrong with real ham?

Still, all questions aside, it’s quite delicious.

The eggplant hummus is pleasant enough, but I’m not convinced olive bread is the best match for it – plainer sourdough or flatbread might work better. The cheese comes as brie and gruyere slices, so plenty to like there.

There’s a standout side dish in the brussels sprouts – although that’s not a sentence I ever imagined myself writing. The way to make sprouts edible is to serve them with fat chunks of bacon the size of liquorice allsorts, and coat the lot in grated manchego cheese and puffed rice so that you hardly taste the evil greens at all.

For desserts, there’s a tempting choice of chai chocolate tart with lemon curd, or white balsamic poached pear with Ferrero Rocher labne (yoghurt cheese) and a coffee pot de crème with white chocolate hazelnuts. But the main course and side serves are so hefty we can’t fit another thing. \ JANE ROCCA SPEAKS TO TIGERLILY’S AMELIA STANLEY spice trade through colours and petal notes. “The textile is what provokes the silhouette,” Stanley says. “We start with the fabric, then the colour and pattern, and from there we visualise the dress or the pant, and so on.

“We don’t really follow trends because we work so far ahead. We create garments in our own world and the key is to stay true to Tigerlily and what the brand has been for the past 13 years.”

She says the beach plays a huge role in shaping the collection too.

“I’m an outdoors girl and when Jodhi launched the brand, the emphasis was on being chic when being out. While we don’t work together any more, she is still very much tied to the brand. I was the first designer she ever employed. She is a beach babe and super relaxed and makes wearing light clothing look beautiful. That’s what I instantly noticed about her.”

Stanley has an honours degree in fashion and textile from the University of Technology Sydney – and completed her thesis on swimwear textile technology.

“When Jodhi took me on, she did so to grow the clothing side of the business, and now the clothing range is a huge part of the brand,” Stanley says.

“We’re all about wrapping yourself up this winter. Our collection really showcases some of the layering components that are part of our DNA and we bring back many seasonal staples that women want.”

Travel and destinations provide a wealth of inspiration for Stanley, who is always excited by visiting somewhere new, tapping into an old culture and discovering historical facts. “I guess you could say my knowledge in textiles provokes that,” she says.

“Textiles date back to antiquity and at the moment we’re looking into Egypt and coming across all these amazing facts. For example, Louis XIV was responsible for creating French textiles because he stopped imports coming in from the East.

These facts inform our ideas as much as sifting through books or tucking ourselves in museums. I love the trail of information that’s within hand’s reach and can be purposed into fashion.” \ jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au

hen Australian fashion designer Jodhi Meares – then known as Jodhi Packer – launched her beachwear brand Tigerlily in Sydney 13 years ago, it didn’t take long for it to become the go-to label for the perfect bikini.

Meares is no longer involved with the brand. She sold her beachwear business to pursue different interests and is apparently working on a new yoga collection.

These days, Tigerlily is run by Sydney fashion designer Amelia Stanley. She was employed by Meares nine years ago to help take the label beyond the two-piece bikini ideology. While the humble bikini still finds a cosy spot in the collections each year, Stanley is focused on beachwear chic and on fashion’s casual essentials.

In March, Tigerlily presented at L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival – it was Stanley’s first foray into an autumn/winter catwalk showing.

With her mind already focused on winter 2014 – she works three seasons ahead – it was important to be involved in LMFF to bring the brand to the attention of consumers.

“We are a beach and lifestyle brand, but we are so much more,” Stanley says.

“We’re all about embracing the outdoors with a real emphasis on cardigans and knits and chilly weekend getaways down the coast.”

bloods ties that bind Profile \ Bob Skilton is still a club man through and through, writes STEPHEN HOWELL

T

riple Brownlow Medallist Bob Skilton – that’s not Skilton’s full name, but you could be forgiven for thinking it was, because almost always Triple Brownlow Medallist are the first three words used when Robert John Skilton is introduced.

Skilton won his medals as the Victorian (now Australian) Football League’s fairest-and-best player in 1959, 1963 and 1968 when he was a rover with South Melbourne, the Swans.

They were the Swans when he joined them as a Port Melbourne kid and still are, but for the past 30 years have been the Sydney Swans, having been moved to Sydney by the league when they were no longer viable playing at the Lake Oval on the edge of Albert Park Lake, and representing their suburb in a national competition.

Skilton, now 74, is proud of his medals, but he said in an interview with The Weekly Review earlier this year, he is more proud of the Swans – “our club”, as he calls them – and the respect they have earned.

Sitting at the table in the spotless lounge of the Bentleigh home Skilton shares with wife Marion, also from “Port”, and looking out over an immaculate backyard, the champion said his one taste of playing in a final in an era when South Melbourne “helped make up the numbers” (his words) was more important in a team sport.

He was referring to the Swans’ first semi-final loss to St Kilda in 1970. It was his first season after the third Brownlow, having missed all of 1969 with an achilles injury.

I let the moment pass, but looking up the book Legends of the Australian Football Hall of Fame later, there was this

one (premiership), now I’ve seen two and hopefully I’ll see a few more.”

The second, of course, was last year’s win by Sydney over Hawthorn, and Skilton was the proudest man at the MCG when he presented the premiership cup.

“I was extremely lucky to think that 40 years after I stopped playing I’d have the honour of presenting the cup to my club.

That was just fantastic.

“I’m so proud of our club these days. They talk about our culture and the way we go about things, and we never had that before, even in ’70 when we made the finals for the first time under Norm Smith.”

Like many of those left behind in Melbourne with the 1982-83 move north, Skilton took a little while to come around, but the red and white cells in his blood soon were in harmony again.

“I felt that (if I didn’t accept the move) I haven’t got a side at all.”

Skilton, who has had a hip replaced, was preparing for a short stay in hospital when we spoke. “It’s got to have alters to it,” he said.

This was around Easter. Unfortunately the operation did not go smoothly, infection set in and he is still in hospital.

Ever chirpy, he says he expects to go home again early this month, although with another replacement operation planned for some six to eight weeks after that.

He says he would then think about whether he would return to his part-time job with the Children’s Hospital Foundation Melbourne.

“Just before half-time, as I marked the kick-in from Collingwood, my teammate John Rantall was also going to mark it and we collided head-on and he spread my nose all over my face again and opened up a gash over my right eye that was stitched up at half-time.

“I came out after half-time and ran into a Len Thompson shepherd, and he opened up my left eye. That was why I looked like that on the Monday night.

“When the count was on, I was actually in bed.

“In ’63, the whole team was at (coach) Noel McMahon’s place. In ’59, I was an apprentice plumber, so I was at night school at Melbourne Tech in the city.

“I caught the train home and turned into my little crescent in Port Melbourne and all of a sudden everybody in the street started congratulating me. By the time I got home the press was there.

“It (the count) was still covered, on radio. The first of the televised Brownlows was Peter Bedford’s in 1970 and that was at the Dallas Brookes Hall and it was a male-only function.

“It’s changed a bit. The red carpet’s become a big part of the night.”

Skilton polled 24 votes in 1968 to beat Denis Marshall (Geelong) on 21. In ’63, he had 20, beating Graham “Polly” Farmer (Geelong) and Darrel Baldock (St Kilda), 17. With 20, Skilton actually tied with Verdun Howell (St Kilda full-back) in ’59, but won because he had more

“Prior to ’05 I’d almost resigned myself that I’d never see one (premiership), now I’ve seen two and hopefully I’ll see a few more.”

Skilton quote: “I felt 10 feet tall as I broke through that banner of red-and-white streamers (to lead the Swans out as captain). It was just like I thought it would be. It’s impossible to put into words how you feel as the cheers of 100,000 people hit you as you run on to the ground.”

Skilton had to wait until 2005 for “our club” to win its first premiership in his lifetime. (South was premier in 1909, 1918 and 1933). He told The Weekly Review of the final moments of the game against West Coast Eagles, beginning with the famous game-saving mark of Leo Barry.

“I was waiting to go on to the ground,” he said. “The AFL had organised that, win, lose or draw, and I was in the players’ race when Leo took that mark … and I didn’t see it. It wasn’t until it came up on the replay on the scoreboard that I actually knew what he’d done. That was a pretty happy day.”

Skilton’s time on the ground is caught in a photo that has pride of place on the mantelpiece. It is of him embracing a key member of the Sydney version of “our club”, Michael O’Loughlin.

“They asked me if I’d join the hospital full-time. I did for number of years; now I’m part-time. I still enjoy it immensely.”

Talking about hospitals, Skilton was often a casualty on the footy field. He bled for the Swans; he bled for them in 237 games from 1956-71, and was the subject of injuries that got the interview onto its original track, the three Brownlows.

Because there’s a famous photo of Skilton with broken nose and blackened and stitched eyes after one of his medal wins.

“You win ’em, you wear ’em,” Skilton said pointing to a WEG cartoon above the mantelpiece in which a wife says to her husband: ‘If that’s the winner, what’s the loser look like?’

“I went into the (last home-and-away) game with two

He was happy to share the honour when, years later, the league elevated all dead-heaters to equal status. “At the time I thought I was very lucky to win it instead of Verdun,” he said.

“I got more votes, but I thought the fact that he voted in more games was really more important.

“I was quite happy that it was me and not Verdun, but if I’d have been running the competition it would have gone to him and not me because of that.”

Returning to the Legends book, in which Skilton is a comfortable fit, the chapter on him tells how after one of his early games, sports writer Jack Cannon predicted that the rover would win three Brownlows.

The debut from this Melbourne University music graduate is an unashamedly quirky affair. Rees-Lee’s classical training is kept to the fore (opening track The Way manages to recall Suspicious Minds and Greensleeves), but a strong streak of kitsch runs through the 10 tracks. Her vocals are girlish and lisping, while the instrumentation mixes harpsichord with freaky synths.

The naming of superb first single Emmanuelle after a classic erotica flick feels apt; there’s a similar fusion here of arty and cheesy. There’s also a delicate balancing act between willingly strange and accidentally daft. At times, it’s hard to tell if Rees-Lee is taking any of this seriously.

Still, it’s hard not to be sucked in by the prettiness of tracks such as Come All Ye Fair And Tender Maidens — which seems to riff on folk standard The Water is Wide.

Similarly, the layered vocals on Paradise give the track a haunting, almost spooky feel that recalls Paul Giovanni’s classic soundtrack for The Wicker Man (not the terrible Nick Cage version). Kate Bush remains the common ancestor for much kooky female pop, but here pastoral and vaguely psychedelic vibes recall early Bowie.

Rees-Lee seems to have found her own place. Spacey, spooky and slightly silly, this is thoroughly impressive. \

Can Eating Insects Save The World? \ SBS ONE, Wednesday, June 5, 8.30pm Âť www.sbs.com.au

There are, this British doco tells us, 40 tonnes of insects for every human. For most of us, this is hardly a fact to inspire lip-smacking. Yet, likeably childish presenter Stefan Gates decides to put culinary prejudices aside and heads to Thailand and Cambodia in search of new sources of protein. Unlike beef, bugs need little food and water and can fill a hamburger bun without flooding the globe with greenhouse gases.

As Gates points out, meat is pretty gross too, if you take a long, hard look at the gizzards and eyeballs on offer in a Bangkok market. Soon, he’s scoffing water bugs, only to discover their crunchy carapace is full of icky green eggs.

At which point, Gates turns a similar colour and foregoes a side-serving of scorpion.

He samples crickets, ants and “land crab� tarantulas – the latter of which he hunts with a group of barefoot Cambodians.

(Spider bottoms taste like cream, apparently).

While there are valid points about illogical cultural sensitivities, the gross-out factor looms large. Gates seems less interested in opening our eyes to new ways of eating than in encouraging us to peer at the screen through our fingers. \

Long-time followers of Allen’s canon will be familiar with his ability to swing seamlessly between triumph and nadir (Stranger was actually made before Paris), but this is by no means a bad film. It is, however, supremely forgettable.

The central device of a charlatan psychic (Pauline Collins) allows Allen to staple together a few troubled relationships. Helena (Gemma Jones) seeks psychic help as solace for her failed marriage to Alfie (Anthony Hopkins).

Collins’ predictions quickly envelope failed writer Roy (James Brolin), his wife, Sally (Naomi Watts), and their attractive neighbour, Dia (Freida Pinto). We’re on familiar Allen territory as these relationships unfurl – in fact, the film feels much like a lightweight retread of Husbands and Wives – but the director seems to lose interest halfway through, leaving us stranded at the end of the second act. It’s one thing to end ambiguously and another to shut things down on the verge of a climax.

Still, it’s a pleasant two-thirds of a film, with some fine actors delivering half-decent performances. \

ixed-price servicing seems to be the marketing strategy du jour in motoring. Most recently Volkswagen has stepped up, offering it across the range for the first six years. Yep, six.

It’s a great idea. Owners know where they stand before they bring the car in for a service rather than after, and there are so many of these plans THEY on offer that buyers can compare service costs DOn’T MAKE between a good deal of models.

MUCH ON THE But it might also be opening a can of worms.

SALE OF NEW Some background: the marketing guys have to come up with plans that are financially attractive CARS to customers and also provide cars with enough attention to keep them out of trouble. The plan then has to be sold into the dealer group, and dealers are a stroppy lot when it comes to service.

Generally they don’t make much on the sale of new cars and they try to claw back profitability through parts and service. If an importer or manufacturer comes to them with a plan to instigate fixed-price servicing, you can bet they’ll go through it with a fine-tooth comb and if they don’t like it they’ll raise hell. Car companies hate unhappy dealers because at the end of the day their dealers are the only customers they have.

That’s why a recent kerfuffle in Queensland caught my eye.

A woman who owns a small Hyundai went onto Facebook complaining about servicing at a dealer. She accused the dealership of “deliberate

fraud” after being quoted an additional $700 in recommended repairs for a standard $300 service.

When the media aired her complaint, it led to a string of online comment about how dealers try to stitch up their service customers, from charging for oil changes that haven’t been performed to doing stuff the customer didn’t authorise, such as putting expensive additives in the fuel and engine.

Performance of unnecessary work was also a popular topic.

Let me state here and now that the bulk of dealerships act responsibly and modern cars are so complex and so mechanically varied that there’s no way I’d have a new car serviced anywhere but at an authorised dealer, at least for the first three or four years.

But the cold, hard fact is that maintaining and operating a service operation is far from cheap, and with fixed-price servicing the margins are slimming down. The temptation is always there to generate extra income wherever possible. The onus, therefore, is on the owner to ensure that all scheduled work is carried out properly and that no unscheduled work is done without permission and a firm quote.

Sport \ the new stars of the sandbelt

elbourne’s famous Sandbelt is home to several of the world’s most prestigious golf clubs – Royal Melbourne, Huntingdale, Kingston Heath and Victoria.

Nestled just to the north-east of Royal Melbourne, right next door to Victoria, is the Cheltenham Golf Club.

On May 19, Cheltenham soundly defeated Victoria 6-1 to win the division two men’s pennant title, winning promotion to division one for next season.

It capped off a remarkable rise for Cheltenham, which has spent the past five years performing above its means.

Cheltenham has only nine holes, compared to the might of its three closest neighbours – Victoria and Sandringham have 18 holes and Royal Melbourne has 36.

Tony Blair, the club’s vice-president, sponsorship curator and general golfing enthusiast, says the win was among the best moments of his life. ‘‘To Cheltenham it means everything,’’ he says. ‘‘This win is for everyone – the players, the members, the sponsors. There were a lot of man hugs and it was just a massive day, the players worked hard for it. ‘‘We had a great season, going through undefeated. We had one player, Brad Kivimets, who went through the entire season undefeated, he won all eight of his matches, which is very unusual.’’

winning its first title in 2000. In 2009 it was promoted to division five, and has been promoted every year since, but lost the grand final each year – until this year. ‘‘We’ve been beaten in every final in the past, sometimes 4-3 in a really close result,’’

says Blair. ‘‘So this is actually our first title.’’

Cheltenham’s proximity to the Victoria club has established a friendly rivalry, and Blair describes their neighbours, some of whom made their way to Cheltenham after the final to toast their success, as a ‘‘class

act’’. There were numerous renditions of Queen’s We Are the Champions and several well-earned beverages consumed.

Blair says ultimately the win, at Yarra Yarra Golf Course in Bentleigh East, another Sandbelt club, was one of Chelthenam’s proudest achievements. ‘‘We are only a nine-hole club but we’re a very proud nine-hole club,’’ he says. ‘‘Players can’t come here thinking it’s a walkover because it’s a really tight course and the greens are pretty quick. ‘‘Our guys play at quality courses and the expectation was that they were going to win.

Our numbers are huge, there were plenty of supporters around when some clubs can’t even get enough to caddy their players. ‘‘The spirit of pennant to me is how you compete, it’s not about whether you’re a rich club. We don’t have a $12 million clubhouse but we’ve got our first title.”

Kivimets agrees with Blair, saying the win ‘‘meant everything’’ to the club. ‘‘We’ve always lost in the final so to finally get the flag was awesome,’’ he says. ‘‘I played some good matches and some scratchy ones. It makes it easier when your teammates are doing well because you don’t really need to do much.’’

am used to golf courses having one or two “view holes” offering beautiful vistas. So I wasn’t prepared for the Peter Thomson-designed Hamilton Island Golf Club, which is set on its own island with absolutely stunning views of the Whitsundays from all holes in all directions. From the moment we boarded the ferry on Hamilton Island for the five-minute passage to Dent Island we felt transported, like we were having a holiday within a holiday. The par-71 course winds around the crest of the island up from a new clubhouse restaurant that is also a destination for non-golfers taking in the views. The fairways are narrow and the ravines unforgiving. Fortunately for us it was a beautiful morning with only a very light breeze, so the links-style course didn’t feel as exposed as it could have. The signature 14th hole, which is a par-three up to a spectacular elevated green at the crest of the island, offers the challenge of hitting a shot that avoids sending the ball into the yawning woods that surround the green. I won’t tell you where my tee shot went.

Golf is sometimes described as a good walk spoiled. But with the glorious views in all directions, even a walk in the rough searching for a lost golf ball is a pleasure. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

oss Didier finds inspiration for his furniture pieces in the most unexpected places. From an alarm clock beside a bed, to the claustrophobic feelings of crowded trams, Didier gives a whole new meaning to thinking outside the square.

“I think there is a danger in being too aware of what other people are doing,” says Didier. “The design industry feeds on itself probably too much, so that people don’t get influenced from other things. This has always been really important to me. It’s probably the reason why I don’t read too many design magazines because it becomes too intoxicating.”

Didier’s design studio in Heidelberg West is a testament to this philosophy. Situated in an old industrial area, the studio is a minimalist sanctuary.

Black, sparse, tranquil, it’s the perfect setting in which to design and create.

Yet at the same time, the studio encourages you to uncover the stories behind Didier’s award-winning works. Without any trace of an exuberant hunter-gatherer, you are able to examine the complexity of the Elfin stools, feel the timbers of the Fable range, smell the kangaroo leathers of the dramatic Vue De Monde Tiller chairs.

A thinker, designer and manufacturer, Didier has spent the past decade carving out a reputation for creating unpredictable furniture pieces that continually challenge the norm.

Since opening his studio in 2000, he has produced 10 distinctive ranges of furniture to local and international markets. With a background in sculpture and industrial design, Didier’s work is underpinned by the belief that ideas, manufacturing and design are all interwoven – an approach he refers to as “engineered craft”.

Didier’s scope of work varies from one-off pieces, to small-batch and volume production. His plastic-moulded Elfin stools – which he has proudly just reproduced in timber – received a volume production in the thousands for Times Square. Other commissioned creations can be found in the Denver Art Museum, Belconnen Arts Centre, Microsoft and Google offices, the Australian Defence Force, the Opera Kitchen at the Sydney Opera House, and the famed Vue de Monde restaurant.

Yet despite such success, Didier is refreshingly humble. Exuding an obvious passion, he explains how his design process is guided by the principle that his products must be innovative, intriguing, functional and saleable.

“There is a real challenge of the rational competing with the emotional,” he says. “In many cases, it’s so one-sided. It’s either too emotional or it’s so rational that it ends up being very dry. There is this whole fine balance of continually trying to find the point where you can push the more interesting, sculptural side of furniture before you start to make it reasonable.”

As a child, before he really knew what furniture design was, Didier welded and knocked together all kinds of objects with other kids in the neighbourhood.

Sourcing waste materials and farm equipment, he created body casts and other pieces, such as a gothic skeleton made from parts of an old cradle, and a Ned Kelly costume constructed from old metal sheeting.

But as Didier explains, it wasn’t until he crept

into a neighbour’s bedroom that he experienced that lightbulb moment.

“There was this kid in our gang who lived around the corner and his brother was studying industrial design,” says Didier. “I didn’t even know what a designer was back then, but I loved sneaking into his room because it was full of old bikes and bike parts. He always had new prototype models of things like wind-surfing equipment and archery sets. It was my first introduction to design as a formal industry.”

Following that catalyst, Didier enrolled at RMIT in 1990 to study industrial design, before switching to a fine arts and sculpture degree the following year.

“Combining industrial design with sculpture really created that unique blend of being creative and poetic, but also using industrial techniques to achieve what it is I wanted to create. It’s completely different to what other people were doing in fine art,” he says.

any collaborative projects at university sparked a fascination for interlinking concept, form and function. For example, The Extended Buttocks was solely based on the purpose of being able to sit down wherever you chose, while the Wearable Body Spaces were triggered by the need for personal space on peak-hour trams. The Perspective Glasses proved useful to design students, enabling them to measure up the world in gridded X and Y co-ordinates.

But Didier’s favourite, perphaps, was the Extended Nostrils. Based on the link between the sense of smell and the memories it can arouse, the work consisted of a face mask, two wheels, and kilometres of cling wrap.

After university, Didier spent a couple of years travelling and working in Europe and Britain. A “lucky beer moment” in London, landed him a job at a theatre set and prop production studio, where he designed and built furniture for the stage.

“It was all simply about look – you didn’t have to consider things lasting,” says Didier. “There were various plays where we would be finishing off things the night before, and in the performance you would just sit there watching the sticky tape stretch, hoping it wouldn’t all fall apart.”

After returning home, and working in retailing office furniture for his family’s company Moderntone, Didier took the plunge and opened his own business. Pulling in all the resources of his family – his wife, Libby, and his father, Max – Didier opened his own studio in Abbotsford.

“I had all the pretensions of wanting to be a designer but looking back now we were more like a workshop,” says Didier. “I just wanted to exist … I’d been floating around the world for so long and it was hard to stay in the one place, and having a workshop that I could call my own just felt great.”

With “a pretty obscure business plan”, Didier embarked on a wide series of projects. Although primarily focused on furniture, he made various art pieces for exhibitions. His Mantis chair was included in a show at Westpac in Melbourne, and his Cow Udder Chandeliers were designed for Span Galleries, where the theme was ‘elastic’.

“Arts exhibitions have definitely opened up doors for me,” says Didier.

“So many people channel themselves in an area that’s already tried and proven. It’s either already overcrowded in that technique, or it doesn’t suit people’s personalities, and I think that’s a real trap. I find there are so many opportunities out there that you can angle yourself to do, and it really opens up the same doors.”

Other commissions during this time included designing computer stands for MYOB, chairs for Nintendo’s headquarters in Melbourne, and a glistening tongue lounge for a plastic surgeon. When Didier custom-designed and manufactured furniture for a collaborative project, The Deanery wine bar, in an underground city bunker, the designs won him a commission for MoVida bar de Tapas.

“Every single one-off job that I do, I learn something,” says Didier. “Financially it’s often difficult to do because you’ve often quoted a good price, and it doesn’t justify the time or the hours thinking about it, and the making of it. But it always helps incredibly with what you do next on a bigger scale.”

In 2005, Didier sold his flat in Coburg to fund his first show at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. His stylish sofa chair Obelisk – which takes a classic form and tilts it – was snapped up by British manufacturing company Allermuir.

“Milan was a big gamble and I got advised not to go by many people. But I had an opportunity, and I sort of thought, ‘Well, life is made up of stupid decisions’.

I think creatively if you don’t make stupid decisions you’re going to go nowhere,” he says.

“I think ultimately it opened up my eyes … even though I did have a lot of attention and sold some of the designs, and I had some great financial success, it also just gave me a feeling of what it was like to be part of the international circuit. Things feel so big and daunting, but actually making yourself do it, you realise it’s not so big. It becomes accessible, and if you have the right things you get results, because people need new things.”

Even now eight years on, Obelisk is still in production. It has become such an icon that, on the day I arrive, Didier shows me a furniture catalogue from China with an almost near replica.

“I understand why (the reproduction industry) exists and why it’s not going to go away. I sort of think if it does go away it may even damage the higher end, or the more original, because things are all relative.

You can only be happy if you know what unhappiness is. So if you take away that world it may really damage the other end of it,” he says.

“The only problem is that great design ends up being too expensive.”

In the past few years, Didier has pared back his aesthetic. In contrast to highly theatrical earlier solutions, he is shifting towards seamless craftsmanship. He has particularly enjoyed experimenting with timber, a medium he describes as performing “beyond what (he) thought materials could do”.

“There’s a lot of complexity behind making very simple things. This is not a new revelation, especially in the art world,” he says. “But it’s hard to get your head around thinking, this chair is so simple, will people get it?”

The halal butchers, Mediterranean wholesalers and unpretentious cafés are all bursting with customers in a hurry. Tucked away behind the rumble is the former Holeproof factory, one of Brunswick’s earliest warehouse conversions. This historic building was the first hosiery mill of Andrew Gray Staley and his uncle Dan, who started the company in 1924. This once-buzzing factory is now a haven of voluminous warehouses – all individual in size and design – full of light and 21st-century stimulation. \

New factors at old factories

Friendship improves happiness and prevents misery by doubling our joy and dividing our grief.

Imagine then how happy we’d be living in a former chocolate factory surrounded by friends. These days, the only chocolate in this century-old building is undoubtedly pure cacao stashed neatly by the current occupants in their designer cupboards. But I reckon the smell of chocolate is in the foundations.

The factory had been home to famous Australian companies including Red Tulip and the Kia Ora cordial company. The site is a reminder of the industrial history of South Yarra and Windsor, and specifically of the food-processing enterprises that operated here from about 1910 until the 1980s. \

This site was the oldest and largest biscuit-making complex in Victoria until its absorption by Arnott’s Biscuits in 1964. In the gold rush, Port Melbourne was a vital link between Australia and the rest of the world, so it made sense for Thomas Swallow to establish a biscuit factory (in 1854) close to the bay and produce ships’ biscuits, baked rock hard, not only to last the voyage back to England but miraculously to repel weevils!

By 1883 it was described as the fifth-largest factory in the world.

Arnott’s bought the business and the Port Melbourne site later became part of a large townhouse and apartment development known as The Anchorage. \

through glass concertina doors and its position at the front of the house is an obvious choice.

This anomaly is of little consequence at street level; any evidence to passers-by is limited to the sound of splashing behind the hedge-lined rendered boundary wall.

Rooms at the back of the ground level include a home office, guest room (with en suite and walk-in wardrobe) and a large games room. One of several recreational areas handed over to the kids of this household, the games room has a sliding door that keeps noise from carrying into the kitchen.

mAl JAmeS \ INCREASE IN MILLION DOLLAR-PLUS SALES IN thE BLUE-ChIP fRINgE

I

n Melbourne, a good indicator the upper end of the market is improving is when you start seeing a lot more $1 million-plus activity in the suburbs that edge blue-chip suburbs.

When buyers can no longer afford suburbs such as Brighton, Kew, Camberwell and Malvern, they start looking at Balwyn and Balwyn North (and neighbouring Surrey Hills), Burwood, Bentleigh and Beaumaris. A year or two ago, you’d see only a handful of million-dollar sales in these suburbs, whereas we’ve seen an increasing number in the past few months.

Hocking Stuart’s Maurice Di Marzio tells us the agency’s Balwyn office has just come off a record month in terms of sales. The house at 50 Deepdene Road, Balwyn, was bought before auction for well over $4 million and there have been good off-market sales for new houses in Surrey Hills ($3.3 million) and Balwyn North ($1.8 million).

Up north, when suburbs such as Clifton Hill, North Fitzroy and Carlton start getting too pricey, neighbouring Brunswick and Northcote start picking up. In Northcote, particularly, there has been an increase in million-dollar sales in the past

year, something that was a rarity not too long ago.

What is pushing up the top end? Low interest rates are certainly helping and, more recently, so is the lower dollar. We are getting an increase in inquiries from overseas clients, who are again seeing value in Melbourne property.

The sale of 4a Mayfield Avenue, Malvern, is an interesting recent example.

This house was quietly on the market last year and had a nibble at $5 million, but there was no sale. The property went back onto the market this year, calling for expressions of interest (Mark Wridgway and Warwick Anderson, RT Edgar). It recently sold for close to $5.5 million.

There was apparently involvement in the bidding from an expat, who no doubt recognised the value of such a property now the exchange rate is more friendly. That is something we may well hear more of if the dollar continues to drop.

The sale of 8 Haverbrack Avenue, Malvern, a couple of weeks before that for $4.395 million would also have helped with the Mayfield Avenue sale. We rated Haverbrack as “land only”, giving a land price close to $4000 a square metre.

Mayfield was on 1270 square metres, and had a stunning house, so the maths certainly stacked up.

With the price increases we’ve seen at the upper end, a sense of buyer anxiety is creeping into the market. We have clients who are wanting to buy anything, fearing they will otherwise be left out.

That’s something we strongly advise against. Buying in a hurry is the surest way to end up with poor long-term financial or emotional outcomes. Hard as it may seem, you need to ignore the market fluctuations, and focus on buying the right house for your family.

We have also noticed a lot more houses selling before auction. In Port Phillip recently, of the 17 properties that had been scheduled for auction, three sold before –

68 Iffla Street, South Melbourne, and 142 Kerferd Road, Albert Park (both Michael Paproth and Adrian Wood, Marshall White), and 23 Langridge Street, Middle Park (Michael Szulc, Cayzer). That’s more than 17 per cent of sales, when deals before auction were a rarity in 2011 and 2012.

Buying before auction can certainly work if the vendor is open to it – as a buyer you may be better off heading off the competition by making a good offer before auction day. But you need to do your due diligence on how much the property is actually worth to ensure that you’ve paid the right price.

There’s something else those who are ready to dig much deeper into their pockets to buy a property in a suburbs that edges the blue chips should remember – when the market turns down again, as it will one day, the reverse happens and buyers try to get back into the blue-chip suburbs at what seems a bargain price.
