2015 saw the culmination of my two greatest ventures/adventures to date - the birth of my beautiful son Romeo and the launch of The Wedding Series. Both set me off on the steepest and most challenging of learning curves. All consuming and beyond fulfilling, I am yet to take five and catch my breath!

Two years ago I had a very clear vision for a chic event series - opulent, luxurious and polished. A series that would showcase the world’s most prestigious brands and suppliers to brides and grooms who wanted to enjoy their wedding planning, for it to be as joyful as their special day. The last 19 months have been busy and productive, motherhood concentrates the mind! Our concept has been refined and continues to evolve. Those first imaginings have become a reality that we will be proudly launching internationally late 2017. The Wedding Series is a strong, highly skilled and passionate team who are committed to delivering the perfect experience to each and every one of our brides, grooms and brand partners. Working with renowned suppliers and their exceptional and beautiful products makes planning and styling weddings for inspiring couples like Australian artist Kerrie Hess and Peter Collins a joy. Their big day is in the coming months and they have generously shared their love story on page 30. Our expanding company now includes a Wedding Planning and Styling Division dedicated to actively servicing Sydney, the Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. We also offer a Bridal Concierge Service providing brides and grooms premier access to our brand partners. This includes exclusive luxe experiences to ensure every step of your wedding journey is memorable, we don’t just focus on the destination. As our first annual Love Story Magazine goes to print I am in the final stages of curating our inaugural Love Story Exhibition. Six months in the making, eight sensational shoots capture the intimacy and beauty of eight love stories. I created the Love Story Exhibition to showcase some of Australia’s premier wedding venues and the talent of our country’s leading wedding photographers. I hope the next 60 pages captivate, inspire and make you smile as you share the unique journey of each of these special couples. Thank you to our partners who have embraced The Wedding Series and who continue to strengthen their relationship with us as we grow. A special thank you to Bvlgari, La Mer, Jo Malone London, David Jones and Palazzo Versace for their faith and help in bringing our first exhibition into print. To all the sensational wedding venues and their staff, the incredibly talented photographers, make up artists, videographers and of course our gorgeous, generous couples thank you. Thank you for your enthusiasm, your time and for sharing our vision, you made this process possible. I hope you enjoy this publication and our exhibition as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

The Wedding Series offers a Bridal Concierge Service providing brides and grooms premier access to our luxury partners, exclusive offers, experiences and invitations to The Wedding Series events and supper clubs. This service is to ensure every step of your wedding journey is as memorable as the big day. One of our favourite offerings is the Jo Malone London Scent Your Wedding Experience where our brides to be are treated to an exclusive and decadent Bridal Consultation in a Jo Malone London boutique. Scent is often overlooked in the planning of the big day yet we all recognise its power in evoking memories. As a responsible Director I feel real product knowledge is essential when advising our clients, so I recently visited Jo Malone London in leafy Mosman on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Yes I treated myself, and what a delicious, delightful, decadent indulgence!

already lifting me. The next step is to massage the skin with a complimenting perfumed body creme, in my case this was Tuberose Angelica to give an all over scent. Once the skin is scented and conditioned you are ready for a spritz of parfum, the final, glorious touch. As I lolled intoxicated with these heady scents Sarah-Louise explained the real magic of layering. By layering fragrances this way the bride is ensured her bespoke scent will take her through her day - from the ceremony through to dinner and then on the dance floor. Sarah-Louise continues to explain the flow of the hour long bridal consultation Jo Malone London offers. Mindful of the power of scent each consultation commences with an informal chat about the bride’s wedding plans - her gown, will she be wearing a veil, and what flowers has she chosen? This allows the consultant to tailor a selection of scents for the bride to consider. Throughout the consultation the bride is advised on ways to incorporate her bespoke fragrance into her day. Scent does take you back to a time and a place in an instant. After my Jo Malone London experience I encourage all of our brides to take advantage of their knowledge and pampering service to explore the power of scent. To find out more about The Wedding Series Bridal Concierge Service or to enjoy a complimentary Jo Malone London Scent Your Wedding Experience email concierge@theweddingseries.com

The treatment started with Education Ambassador Sarah-Louise Jacob offering me two scents to choose from while she explained how layering your signature scent with another fragrance creates something distinctive while remaining true to your individual taste. The first step in layering is to clean the skin. Scented body wash is whisked up into a glorious foam, not dissimilar to the froth on a cappuccino. The foam is then gently massaged from wrist to elbow and removed with a warm hand towel, bliss! I had chosen Peony & Blush Suede and opulent floral undertones were

CHRISTINA MACPHERSON Model/Influencer TOM PATERSON Teacher/NZ Survivor

You have one of the most romantic
love stories we have ever heard. How did you meet? Tom: I was visiting Byron bay for a friend’s birthday party. Amongst the broth of humans was Christina. I saw her in the most cliché way possible across the room. All stood still. Slow motion set in as I walked toward her and with
a gasp for air and hopeful confidence words splurged out of my mouth... “You have big f*$@ing eyes”! Followed by nervous laughter and an apologetic shrug.
With the expectation of being turned away,
I started to turn my posture to run. But something magic happened, she was a weirdo, a weirdo like me! She responded with a laugh and an array of terrible jokes to match my own. Later Christina asked if I would take the day off work on the Monday for a date. I rang
my boss and quit my job on the spot, staying in Byron for another three weeks before Christina took an even bigger leap and left her life in the Bay to come and travel the length of New Zealand in the back of my shanty old surf wagon. Christina: ...And I guess the adventure hasn’t stopped. We’ve been traipsing across the world, telling each other terrible jokes ever since!

Tom, what drew you to her that night? The way she moved through a room. I watched her laugh and flail her arms about with friends. I could tell that her friends loved her because
of the smiles on their faces and the laughter created from whatever corner of the room she was in. But the thing I could not stop looking at when I got up close to her were her eyes, large sparkling blue moons, they got me good.

How would you describe your journey so far? Tom: The journey has been about growth. I knew early on that Christina was not only my lover but also my best friend. We travelled the world together; we ate weird food, experienced different cultures, laughed, cried, and danced. Life has brought many highs and lows in the time that we’ve been together but the one constant has been our love, and that’s the thing that I can’t live without.

How would you describe each other? Tom: A witty nerd who loves nature and making others happy. Christina is the most caring and generous person I know. She would go broke if it meant her loved ones had what they needed. Christina: Tom has this incredible ability to be extremely confident but without the ego. It

makes him approachable but also respectable. He is the happiest, most positive person I’ve ever met and his sense of humour makes everyone around either laugh or look on with confused “what is he talking about?” faces.

Congratulations on your recent engagement. We are so incredibly excited about your wonderful news. Tom how long had your been planning the proposal and how did it go? New Year’s Eve I had locked in the idea of popping the big question. Knowing that Christina is not big on things, I knew that
it would need to be more about the how and where type experience. I was given the perfect opportunity on a recent trip to a place that I know would be the perfect ‘where’, (Santorini, Greece). Christina being a super ancient history nerd was already emotional from the stunning views and history of ancient Thira. After a long quad bike ride up the mountains Christina
sat down, looking out to the ocean. I knelt down and cheekily asked if she could hold something for me. I then asked if she wanted
to be my weirdo for life. Christina turned
to me shocked, and we melted into a joyous blubbering mess together. THE WEDDING SERIES | 23

Christina, how do you feel as a new bride to be and do you have a vision for your wedding yet?
Overwhelmed! We were on a work trip in Greece when Tom asked me and I was very surprised. It all only happened less than a month ago so I’m still in this bubble of shocked, giggly, newly blinged up bliss! We have talked a little bit about it and it’s really important that our wedding be relaxed as possible and a little quirky (like us!). Somewhere secluded so we can dance all night, where all our friends and family can just feel relaxed and have fun with good people, good music and a vibe that is centred on love and happiness.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? Christina: I guess I was a little surprised at the beginning of all of this that we were even asked! I do truly believe that Tom and I are extremely

lucky to have found each other, and to have an unbiased outside party notice our relationship was really special, and I think just solidified what we already knew. The fact that Kate wanted our editorial to be
set around what was important to us (love, friendship, fun) meant so much as well. The shoot itself was hilarious, and we made some special connections with the whole crew.

Your Love Story was photographed at Ovolo Hotel in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo. It is such an amazing hotel with so much detail. How was your experience and what did you enjoy the most? Christina: I think our mouths were open for a good 20 minutes when we first got there. The architecture, design and art is incredible. It’s quirky, clever, and taps into your creativity. Also, free mini bar and a box of goodies always gets a vote from me!

KERRIE HESS Artist PETER COLLINS Professor

Where did you both meet? We met through mutual friends out one night in Brisbane. Our friends who knew each other were deep in conversation so we were left chatting on the side and there was just something there. And the conversation was incredibly easy. I don’t think either of us were really looking to meet someone at the time, but I think that’s usually how it happens.

Kerrie, what was it about Peter that first caught your attention? Aside from the fact that I did happen to notice that Peter was very handsome, I loved that he had a similar sense of humor to me. I also noticed that he had a nice mix of being serious as well as lighthearted which I also loved.

How did Peter propose and was it a surprise? It was a surprise! I had actually had a hectic day flying in and out of Sydney to film a spot with Jules Sebastian. I was intending to get straight into bed but came home to find candles all over the house all leading to a little box on
our balcony! I was absolutely surprised. My son Marcel came home from his play date 30 minutes later and we all had a big hug.

away by how talented she is as a creative artist, a businesswoman and a mother!

The Wedding Series team is delighted
to be working with you both on your beautiful wedding. What elements of your wedding planning are you enjoying the most? I think for us, its just about keeping it simple. We want the day to feel romantic but relaxed. We both want Marcel as a big part of the day as it’s an important day for him too. The main thing for us is just waking up to a lovely day, where we can both just be in the moment the whole time.

Are there any elements of your wedding plans that you are happy to share with our readers? It will just be our favorite things and close family. We both feel like the smaller the
better. I love flowers so I am looking forward to planning that element. It will be held close to Byron Bay in a very intimate setting. Romantic and slightly boho is the feeling. I’ll also be adding some personal artistic touches of my own to the invitations too.

Peter, what is it like being in a relationship with an artist?

George Wu is designing your gown, what was it that drew you to his designs and how are you finding the process?

It is pretty incredible to be honest. Being a dietitian and a senior lecturer at a university and being very much in the clinical space it is refreshing to hear about the projects Kerrie is involved in and seeing all of the fantastic paintings come to life. I am constantly blown

I met George at an event for The Wedding Series and Bulgari and we just hit it off! I then popped into his studio and fell in love with his love for couture. We are designing the dress together and it’s lovely to do it with someone who adores fabric design as much as I do. All

of his laces are from Paris and his attention to detail is amazing. He is also the loveliest person and I think when a lot of fittings are involved, that is a big part of the experience.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? It’s lovely to be involved! This is the first time that Peter and I have taken photos together so it really just felt like a relaxed enjoyable shoot. We laughed through most of the day and the setting was gorgeous. It was a nice change for me too from being in painting clothes in the studio.

Your Love Story was photographed at Luxury Retreat Spicers Peak Lodge on the highest point of Queensland. What was it that you enjoyed most about your stay there? It was so remote and quiet! I really loved that as I think I sometimes find that switching off can be more fun than visits to a destination in the city. The food was beautiful and we loved the cosy fireplace in our room. And we did love the four wheel very off road drive to the top of that amazing peak nearby on sunset, shooting with Marcus. That was the loveliest moment.... THE WEDDING SERIES | 31

LOVE STO RY WITH

PENELOPE AUSTIN & SCOTT FARDY Where did you both meet? Scott & I met inadvertently through a mutual friend. At the time Scott was based in Canberra for Rugby and I lived in my artists studio in Potts Point. We decided to get together for dinner in Surry Hills, after Scott endured an unfortunate injury. It wasn’t a case of boy meets girl, love at first sight.. I knew nothing about rugby. He knew nothing about music.
I had come off a huge day rehearsing for an upcoming show and for the first time in my life I was running late! I suppose in a sense being
so focused on work ultimately worked in my favour, because I guess I was distracted in a sense. He had a kind nature. He was handsome. There was a familiarity between the two of us. And he also kissed like a gentlemen.

Do you think there is a secret to a happy and long-lasting relationship? I don’t know if there is a universal secret
out there. I think two people create their
own! I think Scott and I have a pretty unique relationship in the sense we had both spent most of our lives alone. Being independent is apart of our blueprint. So we cherish and respect that part of each other. We don’t try and change one another. We always remember to laugh. And we always love harder. At the end of the day if everything is important, nothing is important. He is my most valuable asset. As I am his.

Scott, what do you love most about Penny? Her sense of humor.

Penny, how did Scott propose? We had just come off a huge world tour. I had travelled through the United States on a writing trip and Scott was based in London for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. We arrived home after 5 months on the road to our half built house.

Slowly though our home started to take shape, and for me personally it was the first home I had had since losing my mother at 15 years of age. To celebrate the completion Scott suggested we have a glass of Verve. I had absolutely no idea, nor did I even think it strange to have a glass of bubbles on a Tuesday. We were exhausted but content. What happened next changed the course of my life and heart line. He was on one knee. He promised I would never have to run again to find the home I lost. He was home. He would always be home. I said yes to forever.

Penny, we imagine Scott travels a lot with his rugby and the Wallabies. How does that affect your relationship? Travelling has never effected us. Perhaps because we began our relationship long distance, or perhaps it was the fact we lived such individual lives prior to crossing paths. It was normal to us. We’ve both spent equal time on tour. Whether he’s away with the squad or I’ve been recording in the States we’re both very supportive of one another. We understand it. I think to a certain degree we both enjoy
it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, amen to that! However, we’re due to move to Europe in August! This will mean less travel internationally for him, which will be nice as we enter the next phase of our journey. That being...there is a honeymoon baby on the way!

The Wedding Series were honored to be part of your stunning wedding. Tell us a little bit about your magical day? We returned to the Southern Highlands, and got married on the Milton Park Estate where I once lived with my mother. The grounds are spectacular, and there was magic. Magic in the day. The weather. Our guests. Between us. The estate once symbolized a place where I lost my home, but our wedding day signified getting

it all back. I couldn’t have dreamt it. There was nothing I would change. It was effortless. There was so much love in the air too. I don’t know if it was because of the history I have with Milton Park, but the day was filled with so much heart. We danced until the early hours and had night caps within the walls of the old manner before we all rested our weary heads. It was the best, most precious day of my life.

If you could both give one piece of advice for future couples on their wedding day, what would it be? To always bring yourself back to each other. The little things don’t matter. Even some of the big things don’t matter. All that matters is the man at the end of the isle. It’s that simple. There could have been no one there with us. Which I know sounds selfish, because they all made our day totally spectacular and amazing but, our focus was entirely on each another, and that’s what made the day so unforgettable. I’ve never seen him look at me that way, nor have I felt a love generate from me like it was for him in the 24hrs we had. It is over before it begins. Take note of the small things. The details. His eyes. Listen to the laughter. Be present. Always be present.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? We’re honored to be apart of such a beautiful collaboration, showcasing love. How lucky are we? There are so many incredible, inspirational love stories out there, so to be approached to share our own journey was heart warming. To work alongside such a remarkable, creative and talented team of people has been a really wonderful experience and I can’t wait to see the final result. Such a precious project. Love… What a wonderful thing to celebrate. THE WEDDING SERIES | 35

“The long distance suited the both of us, as we had spent most of our lives living very independently. As we learnt more about one another we realized that in fact we had almost lived on parallel lines throughout our own individual histories. I had spent the majority of mine escaping real life through international travel and music. Home for me was where I was furthest from it. But then Scott happened. I realized for the first time in my life, someone I genuinely cared for... And had begun to fall in love with... Was standing still. And had been still the entire time. He didn’t budge. He didn’t spook. He was steadfast. Strong. And he was still. I realized I didn’t have to run anymore. If ever I did, it would only now ever be toward him.”

INTERV IEW STATUS: Engaged

Where did you both meet? We met through a mutual friend, at Ryan’s photography studio in Byron.

Ruby how did you know you had found ‘the one’? I remember having this light bulb moment
one day whilst Ryan and I were drawing in his studio (something I hadn’t done since high school art class, but had had a major passion for when growing up) I was like, wow it feels so good to be encouraged and supported to do something I really love. These qualities in Ryan were something I’d been lacking in every other relationship, it was like the part that had been missing had finally been found.

to my self I walked out of the shower and into living room with not much on to find Ryan
had filled the living room with flowers and
with rocket laying on his sheep skin throw with a sparkly ring in his hand. He then got down on one knee and asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him and my answer was yes.

Ryan, what do you love most about Ruby? I love watching her dance and play with our boy, lip synch to Beyoncé in the car when we go on an outing and any other performance she does on a whim, her sense of humor is what I love most.

Ruby, how did Ryan pop the question?

Ruby, with careers that take you around the world, how do you and Ryan make
a long distance relationship work when either of you are away?

It was a week or so after having rocket, I was on the biggest high of my life. We had spent
a dreamy morning in bed admiring our new amazing creation. I had hopped in the shower and Ryan said he would take rocket down the road to get coffees. Thinking a had the house

A lot of face time! When we are both home we take time out eat at our favorite restaurants, surf and be creative as a family. We make
a conscious effort to put down the phone, computers and cameras to focus on our family and doing what we love.

You now have a darling 19 month old son Rocket (and one on the way, possibly conceived the night of this shoot!) how has parenthood changed your relationship? It has been an incredible blessing becoming parents, we are so proud of having a healthy, smart little boy. It’s a lot of work but good things always happen with hard work.

What do you both think is the secret to a happy and long-lasting relationship? To support each others goals, to compromise, and to make an effort in all areas of the relationship, and to never stop trying and learning new things as a couple.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? It’s so nice to be photographed together as a couple and as a family. We adored the love story theme and shooting close to home in Byron Bay.

PH OTOG R APH ER

VAN MIDDLETON How would you describe your photography style? It’s difficult to describe photographic styles
in words – probably the closest description
I could make for my work would be reportage or documentary. I try my best to capture real, authentic events, without trying to insert myself too much into the process. I’m not attracted
to overly posed or manufactured photos, and much prefer candid imagery, even if it’s not always flattering in the classic sense. I also like shooting landscapes.

What draws you to creating intimate moments with couples across a large landscape? Large landscapes and big skies – especially if the weather is stormy – have a very dramatic feel. In many ways, they’re an analogy of all the things that go on inside us, the turmoil, the drama, and the broader metaphor of a couple standing amidst a great big beautiful world, with all its promise and adventure before them. Also, without over-thinking it too much, these sort of images are the ones my eyes linger over, that compel me. I suppose it’s the romance as well, the spirit of adventure and the questions that arise – where are they? How did they get there? Where are they going?

What do you love most about shooting couples on their special day? Weddings are days of high emotion. For many couples, they’re one of the biggest days of their lives. For me to get to be there and

join in on that adventure is really special. I’m with the bride and groom more than anyone else on their wedding day, and I get to run through that gamut of emotions with them: the anticipation and fear, the joy and release, the love (and sometimes grief for missing family) and the weary satisfaction and relief at the end of it all. No other type of photography can provide such a range of real, authentic emotion through a day, and it’s never possible to really manufacture those feelings in a styled shoot or in film or theatre with actors or models. So for a documentary photographer it’s a wonderful opportunity and privilege.

What was it like to work with Ruby
and her fiancé Ryan, along with their son Rocket?

How was the experience of being part
of The Love Story Exhibition for The Wedding Series?

The main thing is to look through as much of their work as possible and make sure you find a connection with their photos. Try not to direct or adjust the way they approach their work once you have found someone you like, either by giving them detailed shot lists or sample images or asking them to shoot in a style that is different to the examples they advertise. The best thing you can do is pick well, then trust them. Don’t pick your photographer based on reputation/fame/price. Look at lots of their images. Some other things that you might consider: ask for your high-res digital images if possible; ask to see a full wedding and/or a real wedding album; avoid a studio unless you know exactly who the photographer is at the time of booking, and are able to see their work. Make sure you’re across the details of what’s included so you’re not paying too much extra after the wedding day.

The Wedding Series is amazing: the Love Story concept is perfect for what I do: capturing a real couple in love, without all the conceit that is inevitable in many other styled sessions. And of course the subjects were beautiful, which is always helpful!
And working with other professionals of the calibre of those involved with TWS made my job very easy!

What did you enjoy most about shooting at The Byron at Byron? A beautiful location with very accommodating staff and management. Wonderful surrounds, both within the resort and in the local area. A perfect place for a shoot and for a wedding or stay!

A super laid-back and effortlessly handsome little family. Ruby was the ultimate professional: sometimes I have to gently guide and direct people when I shoot them, but Ruby took charge straight away and her energy and grace came through in the photos. Ryan was a great foil: strong and laid-back and obviously very much in love with Ruby and Rocket.

What advice would you give couples who are selecting a photographer for their wedding day?

INTERV IEW

Elle, you have been on such a remarkable journey. For readers who are not familiar with your story are you able to share your experience? Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Two days after my diagnosis I discovered I
was also pregnant. We were initially advised to terminate the pregnancy in order to put me on life saving treatment, but got a second opinion and decided to continue with the pregnancy. In December we were blessed with a son, who we named Tor Felix.

How do you think this experience has changed your relationship? It tested us like nothing had before. Dealing with the possibility of death, loss and sickness while trying to enjoy the experience of being first-time parents was really tough, but it definitely made us realize how important we
are in each other’s lives and what a great pair
we make. The phrase ‘in sickness and in health’ really resonates with us. We would never have expected that vow to apply just a few short years into our marriage.

Your son Tor must be such a wonderful light in your life. How has parenthood changed your relationship? The dynamic is so different now. We have
had to be much more patient with each other, and learn to work as a team. We feel so lucky to have Tor, especially considering we can’t
try for another baby until my illness is under control and I reach deep remission, which may or may not happen. Fortunately we have so

much family support, which has allowed us to continue to spend quality time as a couple which we have relished after the traumatic events of the past 18 months.

Can you tell us the story of how you met? I moved into an apartment in Bondi Beach when I was 19, and Nick happened to be my next-door neighbour. We started dating a few months later and I moved in with him the following year. Moving house was fairly easy!

How would you describe your journey together so far? It’s been fun. We make each other laugh and have always been supportive of whatever dreams the other has wanted to pursue, whether it be a new business or a creative hobby. The past year was so tough, but we had built such a strong foundation of love and support over the previous decade that we knew we could weather the storm if we stayed positive and hopeful.

Elle what were the most memorable moments of your wedding? The whole day was a lot of fun, and spending
it with our large families was a real joy. The ceremony and reception was held in the backyard of my childhood home, and my Aunty Melissa was our celebrant, which made the day really special. We had long tables and generous share plates that made the large wedding feel intimate and special. Making sure our guests had plenty of wine, food and great music to dance to was our main goal, and not worrying about anything else on the day made it really relaxed and enjoyable.

Nick, can you describe the feeling of seeing Elle for the first time on your wedding day? She looked beautiful. It was very emotional. I did get some dust in my eyes.

What does being a part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? Love is so much more complex and messy than Hollywood leads us to believe. It’s great that each couple profiled has a real story to tell, full of ups and downs and twists and turns, that everyone can relate too. Love isn’t tidy, or predictable, but it’s wonderful, comes in so many forms and makes life essentially worth living. We feel so blessed to have the opportunity to share our complex, honest and unconventional love story.

Your Love Story was photographed
at Watson Bay Hotel. It is such an incredible location and amazing wedding venue. What were the highlights of the venue for you? Watson’s Bay showcases Sydney at its best. The sunset from the balcony is unrivalled
and the view offers a perfect backdrop for romantic wedding shoots. There are also some beautiful scenic locations nearby for an intimate waterside ceremony, and it’s conveniently located right near the ferry wharf. I’m a big fan of the Hamptons style décor too. We enjoyed a weekend babymoon at the hotel shortly before the birth of our son, which was so romantic and a nice way to celebrate the impending addition to our family. THE WEDDING SERIES | 51

EMMA BIRDSALL & DAN MAY

54 | THE WEDDING SERIES

N U M E R O O N E | 2 017

INTERV IEW EMMA MAY (nee Birdsall) Singer/Songwriter/Actress

DAN MAY Musician

Where did you both meet? Dan and I met in passing about 6 years ago at a cafe in Waterloo, and then reconnected a couple of years after that through a mutual friend when he came around to my family home and sat down at the piano after dinner one night. I remember being mesmerized by his playing but thought nothing of it...A couple of years after that the Heavens had it that we’d be brought together again through music and then over a period of just under a year, we fell completely in love.

How did you know when you had found ‘the one’? Both of us had waited (what felt like) a long time to find ‘the one’. When we started dating I think we both just knew it was right. Aside from the “when you know you know” kinda thing, I think having aligned core values is really, really important. If one of those fundamental things is even slightly off it creates tension that’ll only grow over time.

Do you think there is a secret to a happy and long-lasting relationship? No secrets, we’re still learning! Just the
classic advice: communicate, communicate, communicate! Talk about absolutely everything so the small things don’t blow out of proportion... and make a conscious effort to express your love verbally as often as you think about it. Don’t assume they know how much you adore them, tell your other half and show it in your actions!

Dan, what do you love most about Emma? What do I love about Emma: Beyond the obvious talent, humour and aesthetics, Emma
is

so easy to get along with and we share a lot in common including our love of jazz, the beach and a good meal! In general, she always adds value to the people around her; quick to let you in on the latest trend or fill you in with something you need to know. She is somewhat classic; knowing how the past (fashions, culture) should guide what she gives out to the world and her values are rock steady beneath. There are things with her health that physically hold her back often but you won’t hear her complain. She puts others before herself and values her faith, deeply. Oh and she has a great speaking voice which is very attractive to me; possibly a mating-call of sorts?!

Emma, how important is it being able to share the same passions as Dan -
such as music? Music is such a strong point of connection between us, it’s a huge blessing to be able to work and play together doing what we love. Some of my fondest memories with Dan have been sitting around the record player with a glass of wine or a cup of tea just listening to our favourite vinyls.

As recent newlyweds tell us a little bit about your magical day? We were married in Summer at a beautiful church in Mosman followed by dinner and dancing at Athol Hall which overlooks Sydney Harbour. Everything about our day felt so personal to us. Lots of live music played by friends and family, a wedding service that was deeply spiritual and meaningful, great food, unforgettable speeches (with a few impromptu musical numbers thrown in for good measure,

of course!). It was relaxed, intimate and so much fun. I wish we could do it all over again!

If you could both give one piece of advice for future couples on their wedding day, what would it be? Emma: For the groom - be on time and make sure your suit is ironed! Don’t ask your wife-to-be any organizational questions the night before or day of. If something needs sorting out, try and sort it yourself without her knowing what you’re up to! Brides have so much on their plate leading up to the big day so do your best to be reassuring, calming and attentive to her needs during the week of the wedding. Brides - don’t sweat the small stuff and let people help you when they offer! When the day rolls around, just enjoy every moment. You’ve done all you can, now sit back, relax and allow yourself to be pampered and taken care of by your beautiful bridesmaids. Dan: My advice would be to not get bogged down in single factors like one person or the weather etc. when there are so many amazing things always unfolding during the day. The day is about you and your partner and the people who you are celebrating with having a meaningful and great time.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? It’s really special being a part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’. I am a sucker for romance and I love knowing we’re a part of something that celebrates the magic of real love. THE WEDDING SERIES | 55

LILLI KAD PHOTOGRAPHY

In terms of photography, how would you describe your style? Natural, organic and timeless. I am forever chasing good light and try to connect with all my couples and families to create those illuminating portraits that are classic and effortless.

Why do you prefer to photograph film, rather than on a digital platform? I am absolutely in love with the quality, softness and grain film produces. It also renders colours differently and results in beautiful glowing soft skin. More then anything though, I love the process of shooting film. With digital cameras where you can shoot 1000s of images on one little card and have the ability to view the

image instantly, automatically that shutter button
gets pressed so many times a minute (because you can), it’s easy to not think too much and therefore put less thought into it. You also tempted to look at the screen every few minutes to try and adjust. That time could be better spent connecting with the people in front of the camera. With film every time I press that Shutter it costs money so I have to think and compose every image with more thought, crafting the image right there and then in the camera. This just makes for a more relaxed and rewarding photographing style and not the paparazzi feeling that one gets when the shutter is being pressed constantly.

What do you love most about shooting couples on their special day?

Emma wears BVLGARI Serpenti soft cat-eye acetate sunglasses BVLGARI Serpenti Forever Flap Cover in ruby red calf leather

Getting involved with my clients and their family is often very rewarding and really on the day although emotions are high, everyone is happy and in love and the energy is something that I can’t quite describe. I also love the fact that nowadays weddings are very different and individual to the couple. My clients get married anywhere in the word and they design their day to who they are which is exactly what I would do. Why not get married on top of the highest mountain, secluded beach in the tropics or in a French castle when you can?! Those events captured on film will leave you with lasting memories and absolutely stunning images! Priceless if you ask me.

What did you enjoy most about shooting at the amazing Taronga Centre? Besides being surrounded by amazing animals, especially the giraffes, the venue is pretty special. It has amazing views, historical architecture and lots of quirky corners that lend itself very well for any kind of photo shoot.

56 | THE WEDDING SERIES

What was it like working with Emma Birdsall and Dan May the week before their wedding day? Emma and Dan were not just very easy to photograph but also very exciting. Their love for each other is so intense that capturing that for me it became about capturing that energy. Of course both of them being great musicians and this shoot being styled around that fact, made it quite relaxed and stylish. Despite the rain that was looming above us, they were up for anything and we had a lot of fun with the giraffes.

And how did you find being part
of The Love Story Exhibition for The Wedding Series? Being able to capture a pretty special couple and having it all styled and organized flawlessly by The Wedding Series has been a true joy. Mel and Adam, you look made for each other. How did you meet? We met at a press event for a fashion brand which I was invited to attend - Adam was there filming and had to interview me. We got chatting and a few weeks later ended up catching up properly and the rest is history. We’ve been inseparable since that first date.

You are both incredibly creative. What role does creativity play in your relationship? It’s a huge part of our relationship as it’s what brought us together and being with someone who understands your work and passion, let alone lives and breathes it themselves, is invaluable. We inspire each other so that leads to a never ending fuel for our fire.

You live together, work together and play together. Is the dynamic in the relationship different between work and romance? We are both passionate, headstrong people and that carries through in all aspects of our lives. We both like to think we wear the pants in all situations.

How would you describe your journey together so far? A whirlwind and it’s only just the beginning.. It’s travelled in leaps and bounds since the day we met and everything just continues to fall into place very naturally.

What does being part of The Wedding Series ‘Love Stories’ mean to you? We live and work together and that has created all sorts of adventures where we learn and grow to know each other. This has been another one of those crazy adventures, including trying to shoot in the torrential rain, traveling to a place neither of us had been before.

Your Love Story was photographed at Paronella Park outside of Cairns. It is such an incredible location and amazing wedding venue. The park is so green and that waterfall. What were the highlights for you? The park is stunning at night and with the music playing seems like a fairytale.

JUSTIN AARON With a contemporary, artful & documentary approach to photography, Justin Aaron is interested in making photographs that are simple, clear and emotive. He strives to keep the honesty and integrity of any given situation. Based in Newcastle Justin documents beautiful weddings the world over. He is an architecture fanatic and thrives off travel and exploration. Justin is passionate about capturing moments unique to you as a couple, allowing you to recognize yourself in the moment, whilst drawing from each scene a classic elegance. His images artfully capture what it felt like to be there on your wedding day, not to recreate the experience, but continue it. This delightful photographer is drawn to things that are of fine quality, are timeless, honest, classic, the things that have that unexplainable “wabi-sabi about them. It is these same qualities he aims to bring to his photography and why we are so honored to have his work within our exhibition. www.justinaaron.com.au
