Welcome to the 2018 issue of The Wedding Series Love Story Magazine, our annual magazine celebrating Love in all its forms.

This year has been an incredibly exciting time to celebrate Love in Australia with the passing of the Same Sex Marriage Bill in the House of Representatives. As TV Host and Vogue Living Editor-atLarge Neale Whitaker says in our feature Love Story; ‘Last year’s recognition of same-sex marriage in Australia was a massively important milestone for the gay community, and especially poignant for people of David’s and my generation. I don’t think we ever believed we would see it in our lifetime. To be given the opportunity to stand up so publicly for who we are – and show a younger generation of gay people that it’s a life to be proud of - is a wonderful gift.’ Shot at The Old Clare Hotel, this particular Love Story shoot was incredibly special to me and something I wanted to ensure was portrayed as beautifully and powerfully as the men we were capturing – both individually strong and powerful and together such a dynamic, passionate and wildly entertaining couple. Not to mention quite possibly two of Australia’s most stylish men…. No pressure! The results, captured by wedding photographer Jimmy Raper, speak for themselves. So elegant, tender and real, everything I had hoped for and more. A special thank you to Neale and David for allowing us to capture you so intimately. This issue takes you on a journey across New South Wales where we started the year at Spicers Vineyards Estate in the Hunter Valley for the Australia Day long weekend, had a pit stop aboard Super Yacht Oscar II on Sydney Harbour, travelled up to Australia’s destination wedding hot spot Byron Bay and then wrapped up the issue at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley in The Blue Mountains. Somewhere in between this photographic journey I launched a new division to The Wedding Series by introducing The Wedding Series Agency, Australia’s first and only dedicated Wedding Planning and Styling Agency. It has been such a pleasure hand selecting the most highly regarded wedding and event experts across Australia and New Zealand, a group with a shared vision to continue to set benchmarks and push boundaries creating weddings, events and breathtaking memories to last a lifetime. Collectively we are incredibly excited about TWS Agency and the weddings and events we are creating. As always thank you to our world-class partners, our wedding couples, Love Story couples, photographers and wedding venues who continue to embrace The Wedding Series and The Wedding Series Agency. May we continue to create magic for years to come.

MUD AUSTRALIA HIRE SERVICE Famed hand crafted porcelain range Mud Australia has recently launched an event hire service developed specially for weddings. Offered through The Wedding Series Bridal Concierge the hire service allows you to access bespoke Mud Australia dinner settings and serving pieces for up to 60 settings. Founded in 1994 by Shelley Simpson, Mud Australia combines hand made processes, clean lines, colour palette & functionality. The end result is a product that neatly intersects a minimalist aesthetic with an artisan finish. The porcelain pieces happily fit in any interior, providing a timeless alternative to mass produced ceramic design. Made in the Mud Australia Sydney studio using porcelain clay sourced directly from Limoges, France, the pigment is tinted to the body at slip stage to provide colour depth. Clear glaze is applied to the interior of each piece leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling. Each piece is designed to last and manufactured using the best materials available. The porcelain is oven, microwave, dishwasher and food safe making it ideal for domestic and commercial use at the table and in the kitchen. With elegant designs and an extensive earthly colour palette the Mud Australia pieces are the perfect offering for not only your wedding day but your gift registry as well. | To find out more visit mudaustralia.com or email concierge@theweddingseries.com

To celebrate the launch of Mud Australia’s Wedding and Event Hire Service The Wedding Series and Peonies Boutique Weddings selected a range of the beautiful porcelain pieces to create a stunning table setting at Spicers Vineyards Estate in the Hunter Valley. KERRIE HESS & PETER COLLINS What was your vision for your wedding day?

What inspired the menu created by Joe Chef?

We wanted a relaxed but romantic day. I started with a dress that was very floral with flower appliqués hand sewn on and felt that flowers were really the main theme of the wedding. We went with vintage roses and peonies which happened to be in season right at the time of our wedding. The Wedding Series (who helped us style and organise our wedding) also helped us add flowers to the beautiful pool on the property to create a rose pool. (I had seen this concept on a job, painting live at a private event the year before in San Diego!) It was so incredibly lovely and Peter and I were able to swim with the roses the next morning!

We took Joe’s advice on going with beautiful rustic share plates. Our dishes were French inspired with a mix of amazing Byron Bay produce. Sharing was very social and helped everyone mix and chat more easily. Individual chocolate soufflé’s were the perfect end to dinner.

What was your favourite moment? Definitely stepping out down the isle with my dad to see both Peter and Marcel (my son) at the end of the alter both looking so dapper and handsome! Sharing that moment and also seeing my mum tearing up as we walked down the isle to Ave Maria was beautiful too.

Your gown created by George Wu was incredible. What was the process like for you? It was a real time commitment to be honest but I enjoyed every minute of it. I am drawing and painting couture most days but through this process I really learned how couture dresses are made. I have so much respect for all of the work that goes into these pieces of art! George was also just as lovely a person as he is talented, so the process was wonderful for that reason too. He has become a good friend too now. I have finally met someone who loves French Couture as much as I do.

We were able to incorporate some of our amazing brand partners and brands you are aligned to professionally including Bulgari, Laduree and Perrier Jouet. What do you think these moments added to your wedding? Honestly I think this made my wedding so personal! I lived right near Laduree when I lived in Paris and then of course working for the brand, it felt right to have a little bit of Maison Laduree on the tables! The Perrier Jouet champagne tower was also one of the most special moments of the wedding. And the gorgeous flower detail glasses matched everything perfectly. Lastly being able to pop into Bulgari two days before the wedding and pick out the most beautiful vintage pieces to wear on the day was something that was just incredibly special. www.kerriehess.com.au

THE ART OF GIFTING T H E T I M E P I EC E A S T H E P E R F EC T G I F T At The Wedding Series we believe ‘Gift Giving’ to be an art and this art couldn’t be more important than the gift exchanged between man and wife on their wedding day. In our Love Story with Brent and Asha Wilson from page 52 we asked them what advice they would give to other couples planning their wedding. ‘On the day, we were given the advice to take a moment just the two of us and walk away from the party, away from everyone trying to congratulate you and dance or talk to you and step away for a short moment and reflect on the day just the two of us. We got to have a moment of quietness where it was literally just the two of us and be grateful that it was our love that brought everyone there to celebrate and acknowledge that we were now husband and wife.’

THE OLD CLARE HOTEL Finding love and your One is hard enough, so everything else should relatively be a piece of cake. Committing to love and getting married is a profound and special thing, and we’re really excited you are taking that leap. The Old Clare is an alternative luxury hotel in two iconic heritage-listed buildings in Chippendale, Sydney’s creative lifestyle-hub. Each of our spaces are beautiful and inspirational, they also differ distinctly from more traditional venues, leaving room for big personalities and opportunity for small, intimate affairs. Lifestyle is as much in play as luxury: heritage-listed architectural features and original timber paneling in some suites mix with exposed brick and a semi-industrial feel in others. All feature high ceilings, and large, original windows that allow all spaces to be flooded with natural light and highlight the bespoke, handcrafted fittings and Scandinavian, mid-century design throughout. Three restaurants, among them two-hatted Automata by chef Clayton Wells, and three different bars offer an incredible range of options to dine and celebrate your special day. Whether you’re looking for a swank tuxedo soiree, a casual ceremony, fairy-tale magic, oldworld charm, or an informal wedding party, chasing rooftop views by the pool, we have something for you. We know your wedding is yours and we know you’re going to make it unmistakably you, so with these, we can help create each experience to be unique and different. www.theoldclarehotel.com.au T H E W E D D I N G S E R I E S | 47

| INTERV IEW |

NEALE WHITAKER & DAVID NOVAK PIPER

How did you meet? Neale: We met in Sydney at a charity cabaret for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. David was backstage doing hair and I was performing. I’m no Michael Bublé but I can hold a tune! I was singing ‘Stop In the Name of Love’ with two industry colleagues, Brooke Tabberer and Susan Skelly. David asked if he could give me big hair (the theme was ‘70s Soul Train’) – I think it was a bad attempt at flirting. Anyway, it worked. We hooked up later that night and we’ve stayed hooked for 16 years.

Neale, what was it that drew you to David? Neale: His honesty and vulnerability. David wears his heart, his soul and his emotions on his sleeve. I had never met anyone so raw and so complex.

David, when did you know Neale was ‘the one’? David: I fell in love with his beautiful pale blue eyes. I looked deep into his soul and we connected. I knew he was the one for me. Simple.

You are both such exceptional men, yet vastly different. Do you believe opposites attract or how do these differences impact your relationship and life journey together? Neale: I do believe that opposites attract, but I also believe that similarities are what really bond. I think you can over-think why people are attracted to each other. At the end of the day, we just were. Like most people, David and I don’t live a perfect, Instagram life. We disagree often but fundamentally there’s respect, understanding and love. We both know who each other is, and what we’re looking for in life. We often know what the other is thinking before we say it. We sometimes take different paths but the destination is always the same.

48 | THE WEDDING SERIES

David: At the end of the day, it’s all about love. I love Neale with all my heart.

What do you think contributes to a strong, lasting relationship? Neale: Trust, honesty, respect, patience, humour, kindness, empathy – and shared values. Dogs, laughter and chardonnay. Accepting that like anything worthwhile in life, relationships have to be worked at. There are easy bits and difficult bits and bits that make no sense at all. There is no script to a relationship and no handbook. It’s all intuitive. David: I can be hot-headed at times and I call a spade a spade. I tell it like it is. But when it comes to my relationship with Neale I really do wear my heart on my sleeve. It’s all about honesty. I’m 57 years old and I know who I am.

The images from our Love Story shoot are incredibly powerful. They are so tender and you can feel the life journey you have been on together. What did being part of the shoot mean to you both and how did you feel when you saw the images? Neale: We were very flattered to be invited to participate in the shoot for several reasons, not least of which is the fact that we’re both in our 50s! Last year’s recognition of same-sex marriage in Australia was a massively important milestone for the gay community, and especially poignant for people of David’s and my generation. I don’t think we ever believed we would see it in our lifetime. To be given the opportunity to stand up so publicly for who we are – and show a younger generation of gay people that it’s a life to be proud of - is a wonderful gift.

Is there anything special you want to tell us? Neale: David and I celebrated our civil union under British law in 2008. What we haven’t done yet is register that union in Australia, but you could argue that we’re married already. We certainly carry on like an old married couple! We’re just about to embark on a move to the south coast, which is the next stage in our journey. There may be a wedding at some stage – watch this space.

David: Of course there’ll be a wedding! I’m thinking 2020 and I’m wearing white. It will be a garden wedding at our home on the south coast and of course The Wedding Series will be there! Champagne for everyone! Neale: See what I mean? Same same but different …

BRENT & ASHA WILSON

Asha at what moment did you realise Brent was the one and what qualities do you love most in him? When I was with Brent I never analyzed myself or the current situation we were in, he made me feel present and safe. Seeing him interact with my family and just how he fit in to my life so naturally, I knew I had found someone who was more than a friend and a lover, he was the one.

Brent how did you propose? I proposed on the second anniversary of the day we first met and thought it was only fitting to propose at the same place we had our first date. It was simple yet extremely sentimental to the both of us. High tea and scones followed by asking Asha if she would be my best friend forever. It followed with a yes and we popped a bottle of champagne with our parents who I arranged to meet us down there to help celebrate.

What is your secret to a happy and long lasting relationship? We talk openly about everything there are no secrets and we never bottle anything up. We just play, we dance around our home and we giggle at each other’s silly jokes (we are equally as unfunny as each other but our jokes make us laugh together). And when one of us are having a tough day the other is always there to support and help and we talk it through together.

You were married in late 2017, what was the moment you enjoyed most about your wedding day Asha: For me there was many moments but I guess hearing the words he wrote for me and getting to hear that I was his wife .. Oh and of course dancing the night away

Brent: Seeing Asha walk down the aisle for the first time, my heart skipped a beat. Whilst I have always known that we would share the rest of our lives together it was exciting to make it official.

Brent, as a menswear designer, what did you wear on your wedding day and what trends do you see with grooms and groomsmen? Our dress code was black tie, I wore an elegant shawl collar dinner jacket in off-white wool paired with black tailored pants, waistcoat and bow-tie. I wanted to wear a classic suit that was equally sophisticated & timeless. In regard to trends; it varies so much and is dependent on so many things… dress-code, location, time of year and personality. I would have to say no one wedding is the same and whilst fashion trends come and go wedding outfits are a little more unique and far more in tune with the individual and their personal requirements rather than a specific fashion trend.

What does being part of The Wedding Series Love Story Magazine mean to you? It’s so exciting. We are so grateful for the love we have for each other, there are many love stories and it’s so amazing that we get to share ours with you and relive our fairy tale again. We had such a fun time working together, we are both so proud of each other and the passion we both have for our work. Being able to collaborate and work together on such a beautiful project such as the wedding series was like getting to re-live our wedding all over again! www.brentwilson.com.au

EMIRATES ONE & ONLY WOLGAN VALLEY Three hours drive from Sydney, deep in the depths of The Blue Mountains and finally, no bars on the phone. Are these the lengths one must go to these days to actually ‘switch off’? If so then there is no place I would rather be. With toddler in toe we embark on our Great Escape – surrounded by 4500 kangaroos and a Land Rover ‘Defender’ to drive us around. We have entered the world of Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley and what a dreamy place it is. Situated on Australia’s Great Diving Range between two national parks the property provides panoramic quintessential Australian bushland views as far as the eye can see with kangaroos, wallabies and wombats roaming free across the private 7,000 acre carbon neutral wildlife reserve. The resort presents 40 free-standing villas, each featuring its own private pool and spacious verandah to watch the wallabies hop by while you enjoy a glass of vino from the extensive wine list. My son Romeo thought we had a glorious new abode complete with children’s bike and trainer wheels. It is these details and thoughtful touches through out our stay that remind you what a luxury stay really entails. Whilst this escape for the two of us was for some much needed R&R with a side of outback adventure my mind was dreaming of the impeccable venue the property presented for an exceptional wedding, a multi day affair for your nearest and dearest complete with all the luxury offerings the One&Only Hotel Group present. A getaway like no other to celebrate the ultimate union. Let’s hope 2019 bring the couple dreaming of the luxury outback wedding because I’ve found their perfect venue! www.oneandonlywolganvalley.com THE WEDDING SERIES | 63
