THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2020-21 1
From the Head of Schools
In June, we graduated not one, but two senior classes on campus, the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021. It is the first time ever for such an occurrence and, in the case of the Class of 2020, it was the first combined ceremony of the Webb School of California and Vivian Webb School. Yes, there were masks and social distancing, and many joined us remotely, but even that couldn’t detract from the pure joy of celebrating students once again on our campus. We honored our promise to celebrate all our students, and both classes have my profound respect and admiration for what they have been through.
2 THE WEBB SCHOOLS
“As I write to you today, our school is brimming with the energy of 400 young, curious, vivacious students and a grateful faculty and staff who are here to nurture and care for them.”
Our 99th school year was not easy for anyone and, perhaps because of that, there is much to celebrate. The students and their families demonstrated amazing resilience, determination and fortitude. When I first joined Webb in the late 1980s as a young educator eager to embrace Webb’s culture, I asked one of the recently retired master teachers, Ramsay Harris, what made Webb special. Ramsay taught at Webb from 1945 through 1987 and lived on the campus for several years after retiring. He shared with me that one of Webb’s most distinctive characteristics was the fighting heart – the drive to overcome challenges through hard work, integrity and focus. This past year, Webb’s fighting heart was on full display. Starting the summer before the school year, the faculty prepared to deliver an exceptional Webb education in a virtual world. They modified courses and curricula. They developed domestic and international schedules, which required instruction in the daytime and at night. They centered on the student experience and repeatedly adapted to feedback.
Behind it all, the administration and staff worked tirelessly to create, amend and recreate strategic plans to accommodate changing conditions and health mandates. Through it all, we have benefited from the incredible gift of time and talent by Webb’s Medical Advisory Board. And with me every step of the way have been Dr. Theresa Smith and Mrs. Janet Peddy, among many, many others. The school year would not have been possible without their expertise.
fashion, with the spirit and fighting heart that Ramsay described to me 34 years ago.
This report celebrates the donors who allow Webb to thrive.
As I write to you today, our school is brimming with the energy of 400 young, curious, vivacious students and a grateful faculty and staff who are here to nurture and care for them. We may not be completely free from the health and safety precautions necessary to run the school in-person, but we are here with a fighting heart and ready to tackle the challenges ahead. That has always been the culture here and it always will be.
This year, like many institutions, we had a major budgetary deficit to fill. At the outset of the year, we thought that even after The Webb Fund and other fundraising, we would come up short and need to draw on reserves to offset the deficit. I’m proud to say that after an extraordinary unrestricted challenge gift of $2.1 million, and many other generous gifts from legions of alumni, parents and friends, we were made whole. When the books officially closed on June 30, we had built the bridge over this unfathomable year in true Webb
Even as we completed this important work to ensure success in the present, we have also been building a vision for The Next 100, Webb’s second century. I firmly believe that the lessons we learned during the pandemic strengthened our resolve and empowered us to continue innovating in exciting ways, building local and global partnerships and thinking about unbounded education.
Sincerely yours,
Taylor B. Stockdale Head of Schools

The Webb Fund
In the 2020-21 school year, the ongoing pandemic created increased demand on Webb’s annual budget, and we were tasked with generating an unprecedented $4 million in unrestricted annual philanthropic giving to support the daily operations of The Webb Schools and the Alf Museum. Thanks to an incredibly generous lead gift of $2.1 million from an anonymous alumnus, the largest single gift to The Webb Fund in the schools’ history, The Webb Fund Heroes Challenge was created. This gift challenged the Webb community to raise the remaining $1.9 million in support of every part of the daily Webb experience. Over 1,000 alumni, parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends answered the call and made a gift in this critical year.
as a VWS student. Alumnus and former trustee Tim Moore ’59 also contributed $100,000 to The Webb Fund. Life Trustee Paul Reitler ’54 and Honorary Trustee Ming Chung Liu P ’10 each gave $50,000. Parents Jiming Sun and Jun Li P ’23 made a multi-year pledge of $100,000 to continue their annual support of The Webb Fund. The aforementioned are just a few of the outstanding and generous gifts we received this year.
The annual Giving Day was a large part of the success of The Webb Fund Heroes Challenge with more than 460 donors contributing over $400,000 during the 24-hour campaign in April. The Webb Fund was a central component of the day as was the Alf Museum, and the $100,000 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion challenge sponsored by the EE Ford Foundation (which is still matching funds until Spring 2022).
Gifts to The Webb Fund differ from endowment and capital support as they are directly responsible for the unique and dynamic programming that happen at Webb today. Every gift to The Webb Fund supports financial aid, student leadership, faculty development, unparalleled academic programs – such as Advanced Studies in Paleontology, a course that is only offered at Webb – and of course our boarding program, athletics, and afternoon activities. The Webb Fund is responsible for what makes Webb extraordinary, and the dedication of our donors is the foundation for all we do here every day. Thank you to everyone who supported The Webb Fund during the 2020-21 year.
The Challenge inspired many of our donors to contribute meaningful gifts, stretching where they could, to ensure success. Parents Kenneth and Lana Guernsey P ’20 gave over $100,000 to The Webb Fund, in honor of their daughter’s years

Faculty
The Tremendous Faculty BY MICHAEL HOE ’04, DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
As I sit here and reflect on the effort of the faculty last year, I cannot help but get emotional. It is hard to put the efforts and accomplishments of our faculty into words. All I can say is that it was simply amazing.
THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2020-21 7
Faculty
World Languages teacher Malick Mbengue coaching the VWS Varsity Soccer team
IT ALL BEGAN IN MARCH 2020, when the pandemic forced us to evacuate the campus and move our educational program online. Our resilient and dedicated faculty pivoted, adapted, and closed out what turned out to still be an extremely successful year. Looking forward to 2020-21, we knew we needed to prepare in the event the pandemic lasted. Our faculty rose to the challenge, allocating part of their summer to learning how to use Canvas, our new Learning Management System, and collaborating in department teams so that our students could receive a high-quality academic program no matter the circumstances. Facing a tremendous amount of uncertainty, the resolve of our faculty was apparent as we kicked off the new year – investing boundless energy into creating community and culture in the Zoom classroom, intentionally checking in with advisees and students, and thinking about ways to preserve the Webb program and traditions in what was now our new online normal. The diversity of our campus community is one of Webb’s great strengths. We have students from local communities, from across the United States, and around the world. With time zone realities a challenge, our faculty articulated the goal of having our international students receive an equitable experience, with live classes as well. It certainly was not easy, yet our faculty collaborated to offer live evening sessions for students.
8 THE WEBB SCHOOLS
This was not only important for academic success but also critical for our students to remain connected, to have a daily touchpoint with a real-life Webb faculty member in real-time. Our faculty traded dorm duty, which is full of social connection and a great unwinding at the end of the day, for additional online classes, an element of work that takes tremendous energy and concentration. And we gathered together during an evening time block for community events, such as chapel and class meetings.
Science teacher Lisa Nacionales conducting online class from the chemistry lab
While there were certainly some bleary-eyed and tired nights, every faculty member did this knowing that it was to demonstrate our commitment to our students, to care for them and be sure they knew we were here for them. In our community health surveys, these efforts were validated as the majority of our students indicated that their most common and consistent support came from Webb faculty throughout the entire year. Even though we were separated by miles of land (and bandwidth), it is clear that what makes our faculty so special is that they care about the students beyond just the material of their classes. They care about each and every one of their students as human beings, which makes our community the special place that it is today. Food Service Director Armando Amezcua overseeing the new cafe in Hooper Community Center
The Webb faculty of 2020-21 was, in short, tremendous. Reflecting back on last year, we laughed together. We cried together. We consoled each other. We celebrated together. We learned from each other. We learned from our students. We made it through 2020-21 together because OF EACH OTHER. As a team, Webb’s faculty not only ran an incredibly high-quality online program, but also continued to demonstrate genuine care by putting in the time and effort to connect with their students each and every day. I am continually amazed by our faculty’s passion, creativity, and dedication to our community, and feel honored and proud to call them my colleagues and friends.

You might think that working through a pandemic would lead faculty to put their own professional growth on pause. Instead, our faculty jumped into the opportunities presented by virtual conferences with enthusiasm, and several either continued or started graduate degree programs. We also had a record number of faculty and staff attend the People of Color Conference and other trainings as part of our ongoing commitment to achieving our DEI initiatives.

Volunteers
Thank You Volunteers! We are grateful to the more than 200 alumni and parents who volunteered in person and online for Webb programs and events this past year. Volunteers contributed in countless ways for hundreds of hours to further Webb’s mission and engage our worldwide community. They served as webinar panelists for the Dies Mulieres/Men in the Arena symposium and spoke at admission and alumni events. They organized online reunions and class gatherings and served on the Affiliates and Alumni Council boards. Parent and alumni class agents kept their classes informed of the latest Webb news and encouraged annual support. And the list of contributions goes on…

“ There’s a long and strong tradition of volunteering at Webb and we are so thankful to the parents and alumni who step forward and say ’yes’ whenever we ask,” said Director of Development Danielle Gordon. “I’m especially impressed with our alumni volunteers who represent seven decades of Webb, starting with the 1950s to 2021. This longstanding commitment shows the love and dedication they have for their alma mater.”
Medical Advisory Board The Medical Advisory Board has guided Webb throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, advising Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale and the senior team on health and safety matters regarding the Webb community. This includes situational updates on the latest data, developments in testing and vaccines, and navigating Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines to help inform decisions that impact the schools’ day-to-day operation.

THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2020-21 13
From the Chief Advancement Officer
The Report of the Schools is our opportunity to recognize the extraordinary investment made by alumni, parents and friends in support of our mission. As we conclude our first century and reflect on our past, we know that your investments clearly set us up for success and pave the way for the next 100 years. While we look toward the future, the 2020-21 school year presented an ever-changing set of circumstances and challenges to overcome.
14 THE WEBB SCHOOLS
“Our community once again came together and fortified us, making us whole.”
There are only so many ways to say that last year was unlike any other without growing weary, but in the case of philanthropy at Webb the story takes a heroic turn. The Webb Fund Heroes Challenge was launched in the fall with a $2.1 million investment from an anonymous alumnus in the Class of 1963. Our challenge was to match that gift with $1.9 million in additional unrestricted funds to end the year with $4 million. Why was that so important? First, it is worth noting that it had never been done before. If successful, this would be the largest amount ever raised in a single year for unrestricted giving. It came at a time when the school was facing significant budget challenges resulting from the forced closure of our boarding program and in-person instruction. Next, it would require a high level of participation and trust at a time when we could not physically come together. Much of our outreach would be limited to squares on a screen, emails, texts, and phone calls.
Most importantly, we knew these funds were needed to ensure the success of each Webb student and faculty member. From technology upgrades to financial aid, from faculty development to facility maintenance, and certainly the operating costs associated with health and safety, the partnership we formed with you was integral to reaching our goal. The end of this story reads like a fairy tale. The list of heroes is long, as you’ll read in the pages that follow. Our community once again came together and fortified us, making us whole. By June 30, 2021, Webb raised more than $4 million to complete the challenge in addition to more than $500,000 for capital and endowment purposes. On behalf of Webb’s Advancement Team and all of us at Webb, thank you. You are our heroes. Gratefully,
Bob Fass Chief Advancement Officer

They also supported the renovation of a NextGen science lab allowing for the highest level of research, the construction of new faculty housing, and a major renovation of Hooper Community Center in addition to the land acquisition adjacent to campus.
James D. ’42 and Lin Burke Few people or events have had the powerful impact that Jim and Lin Burke have had on Webb. The Burke’s leadership gift to Webb came in the form of a family cabin on a lake. The cabin and surrounding property were sold for over $6 million, making the Burke’s gift one of the largest in Webb’s history. With the proceeds of that sale, Webb built the Copeland Donahue Theater in 2008, the first new construction of an academic building since 1987. Jim and Lin’s gift will continue a family legacy of giving back by providing financial aid to deserving students.

Following Webb, he served three years in the Army during WWII and graduated from Williams College with Dean’s List honors. Eventually, he struck out on his own forming the Heerman Bloodstock Agency and became one of the most successful breeders of thoroughbred racehorses in the country. His clients included classmate George Getty ’42. Vic and his wife of 59 years, Lucille, left the majority of their estate to Webb to support the faculty.

Charles E. Scripps ’37 Scion of the legendary media company and board chairman of the E.W. Scripps Company for more than four decades, Charles Scripps was also a proud and stalwart supporter of Webb. He was a founding trustee and returned to the board in the 1980s. His munificent gifts throughout the years have provided support where needed most; perhaps none was more important than his $1 million gift to the 1990s Building Character campaign which helped steer Webb into the 21st century.

30 THE WEBB SCHOOLS
The Hastings Society The Hastings Society recognizes donors who support The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology year after year. Named for Alfred B. Hastings, Jr. ’42, this society honors our most loyal supporters who embody Al’s commitment to the schools and our community. A distinguished alumnus, life trustee and consistent donor, Al dedicated his life to the advancement of The Webb Schools, giving every year and joining the Thompson & Vivian Webb Society by making a planned gift to the schools. He was an early champion of the establishment of Vivian Webb School and a close friend to Thompson and Vivian Webb. Membership in the Hastings Society is automatic after you have made a gift to Webb or the Alf Museum for three consecutive fiscal years (measured from July 1 to June 30). You remain in the society as long as you continue to renew your annual support. Thank you to each and every member of the Hastings Society for their steadfast support. * indicates membership in Hastings Society

GIVING
Cleve Baker ’53 In September 1997, Cleve Baker ’53 officially documented his intentions to include The Webb Schools and the Alf Museum in his charitable estate plans through a Charitable Remainder Trust. Acknowledging the need for additional income in his retirement years, Dr. Baker set up the trust to leave a lasting legacy at the school he held dear, while also providing income for himself during his life. At the time of creating this meaningful gift, Dr. Baker said, “I am sure most will agree that although one leaves school, attitudes and teachings acquired at the school never leave the graduate. And I am also sure that most can acknowledge the impact of Webb years on the course of their lives. Needless to say I am probably not alone in wanting to give something back – something to help make available the same opportunities to on-coming generations.” Upon his passing in August 2020, his bequest was realized with a generous gift split between The Webb Fund and the Alf Museum, providing critical support in a year where the demands on the operations of the schools and the museum were at their greatest. We are pleased to celebrate the alumni, parents and friends who have documented their future gift intentions through estate planning with membership in the Thompson and Vivian Webb Society. For more information on planned giving, please contact Danielle Gordon at dgordon@webb.org or (909) 482-5267.

E. E. Ford Match for DEI In April, we announced that The Webb Schools was awarded a $100,000 grant from the prestigious Edward E. Ford Foundation to support ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Part of the responsibility as grantees, along with putting the funds to good use, is to match their gift, dollar for dollar, within one year. As of June 30, 2021, members of the Webb community have contributed over $72,000 towards that match. Alumni from every decade from the 1960s to 2020s supported DEI during the 2020-21 year, along with parents, friends, faculty and staff. On Giving Day, Lance Williams ’97 matched $10,000 in gifts to DEI and Bob Connolly ’89 contributed an additional $10,000 to kickstart the E. E. Ford match. Board of Trustees member David Loo ’79 gave $20,000, propelling us closer to the goal of $100,000 by Spring 2022. The Donez family, including Patrick ’21 and Kate ’24, supported the match, and an anonymous donor from the Class of 1968 made his first gift to Webb in support of DEI. The grant from the E. E. Ford Foundation and the matching funds will enable Webb to continue its work on fostering an inclusive school community through attracting, retaining and supporting diverse students, faculty and staff, oncampus programming to enhance school-wide collaboration and working with outside partners such as The Glasgow Group to help inspire and guide this significant mission. This work is being led by Webb’s new Director of Equity John Choi. Thanks to the generosity shown by alumni, parents and friends, Webb can seize this moment, and forge ahead with the important work of creating and maintaining a more just and equitable school community for all. If you would like to contribute to DEI initiatives and help secure the match, give today at webb.org/giving and select Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives under the designation or contact Alison Hansen at ahansen@webb.org or (909) 447-7077.

Protecting Our Community The health and safety of the Webb community has never been more important. Alumni, parents, and friends kept this in mind when deciding how to support Webb and the Alf Museum. During the 2020-21 academic year, over 21,000 face masks were gifted to Webb to support efforts to contain and minimize the risk of COVID-19. These masks have been used by those on campus working to sustain the level of excellence that Webb is known for: • the medical professionals in the Health Center who kept everyone healthy through preventative testing, health monitoring and screening, and contact tracing; • the facilities and security teams who continued to maintain the physical safety of campus while keeping our land beautiful and ready for the eventual return of visitors; • the staff and administration who tirelessly worked and reworked academic plans for online instruction and the future reopening of the schools and museum; • and the students who returned to campus for study pods, athletics, extracurricular activities, and end of the year celebrations. These extraordinary gifts in kind only represent a portion of the generosity shown by members of the Webb community this past year. The Webb Schools and the Alf Museum weathered an unimaginable year thanks to the support and thoughtfulness of the worldwide Webb network.

Thompson and Vivian Webb Society At Webb today, as in years past, we educate and inspire young people to act with honor and moral courage in everything they do. This combined with a drive for academic excellence provides our moral compass and forms our mission. Webb nurtures smart, curious, and independent-minded students to become bold and courageous leaders. You can help perpetuate these values by ensuring that we are able to support the best and brightest students without regard to a family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Our mission and our future depend on it.

Museum Highlights With tremendous gratitude to all of our dedicated donors, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology had an outstanding year. While the physical doors to the museum remained closed to visitors until mid-June 2021, museum staff created exciting opportunities to serve the community, engage new partners, and support the research of the students in our advanced studies programs. The year started off with a record-breaking 28th Annual Peccary Society Dinner on October 16, 2020. More than 150 guests tuned in from across the country and around the world to hear updates on collections, outreach, and student research, among many other program items. The virtual event raised over $200,000 in total from sponsorships, tickets, and donations to the museum. And momentum only built from there. The announcement of the Donald L. Lofgren Endowed Director’s Chair, established by Kenneth De Nault ’61, spurred increased giving to the museum’s endowment in honor of Dr. Lofgren and his unparalleled contributions to the museum during his nearly 30-year tenure as director. With special thanks to the Alf Museum Board of Trustees and the incredible support of Peccary Pals near and far, the fundraising goal for the museum was not only met, but far exceeded. Laudate deum!

Make a Gift WAYS YOU CAN GIVE The Webb Schools and the Alf Museum are registered as charitable organizations under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to Webb and the Alf Museum are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more information about any of the following, please contact the Advancement Office at giving@webb.org or (909) 482-5288.
Give Online: Make your tax-deductible gift immediately to The Webb Fund or Alf Museum. Go to webb.org/giving
Gifts of Securities: Webb accepts gifts of appreciated stock or mutual fund shares.
Matching Gifts: Increase your giving power through matching gifts. Many companies will match the charitable contributions of their employees.
Gifts of Property: Property gifts can include real estate and tangible personal property such as antiques, art, and the like.
PLANNED GIFTS
Bequests, Testamentary Trusts, Charitable Trusts and Life Income Plans: Planning a gift to The Webb Schools through your will or living trust can be achieved through a new document or a codicil to an existing document. You may specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate or a piece of personal property. Estate gifts made through a will or trust may also help reduce federal estate tax liability and allow you to create a charitable legacy that aligns with your personal values. The Advancement Office can help you make a decision regarding your financial plans, which can also include charitable gifts that pay you income during life or provide for your heirs.
Retirement Assets: Donate part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan. If you are 72 or older as of July 1, 2021, you can also transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the withdrawal and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution.
Remainder Interest in a Personal Residence or Farm: You may retain a life interest in your home or farm while deeding the property to The Webb Schools. Though you may continue to live in or use the property, you may claim a tax deduction at the time the property is transferred.
Life Insurance: The Webb Schools can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose. Life insurance can be used to cover charitable gifts made from your estate. Annuities may also be given to Webb. Contact Danielle Gordon at dgordon@webb.org or (909) 482-5267 for more information.
