THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2022-23 1

From the Head of School

In the fall of 2022, I began a threemonth sabbatical to prepare for my new headship. My goal? To look deeply into the shifting educational landscape and consider how major global and domestic changes might impact the work of education. Artificial Intelligence, innovations in higher education, demographic shifts, environmental challenges, global economic inequality, political polarization– these were among the topics I had in mind.

2 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

The questions I formulated were clear, though I knew they wouldn’t be easy to answer: What global trends must we monitor and meet to ensure Webb’s academic excellence? What organizational shifts will enable us to respond most effectively to the increasing demands of change and innovation? It seems fitting that, as we begin Webb’s second century, we concentrate on these kinds of forward-looking questions. I visited 18 educational institutions, ranging from K-12 day schools to small liberal arts colleges, from rural boarding schools to major research universities. On those visits and in between, I talked with teachers and educational leaders about the future of learning and the shifting nature of higher education and the workplace. Together, we thought about the world our students will enter and how we can best prepare them to meet its challenges. I focused on visiting innovation centers, such as MIT’s Innovation HQ and Case Western Reserve’s Interactive Commons. I listened to podcasts and read books about robots, A.I., sustainability and more. For these three months, I mainly lived in the future.

During my travels, I had the great pleasure of meeting with alumni from across Webb’s eras. They shared memories of their lives on campus, their love for their classmates and their deep commitment to Webb’s core values. Each conversation reminded me of the special place these high school years have in the life of a young person. As exciting as it was to think about the future, it was also incredibly rewarding and important to hear the stories that shape our legacy.

I returned home in January of 2023 with a tremendous sense of gratitude that my family and I are part of this incredible community. I remain extremely proud to share this great legacy with our students, faculty and staff who breathe life into Webb’s mission and values every day.

My sabbatical left me with two major takeaways. First, this is a historic moment for innovation and change in education and beyond. While I am not generally a futurist, I do understand that generative A.I. will redefine education in fundamental ways that are both exciting and profound.

We begin this new chapter together, rooted in our history and evolving for the future. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in the years ahead.

Second, I fell in love with Webb all over again. Yes, there are many good and exciting institutions out there. I appreciated the creative programs and beautiful places I saw on the road. But more often, I found myself thinking about Webb. I was reminded of how well-poised Webb is for the future, and how deeply our mission shapes the everyday life of the school.

As you’ll read in these pages, 2022–23 was another extraordinary year for Webb. And it would not have been possible without all of you. I want to thank you for your steadfast commitment and generous support.

Sincerely,

Theresa Smith, Ph.D. Head of School

Campaign Update

Working Together for The Next 100 MICHAEL CHANG ’92, P ’23, TRUSTEE AND BOB FASS P ’23, CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER

Six years ago, Webb began the quiet phase of a historic campaign, grounded by its first 100 years with an eye toward The Next 100. Bolstered by an estate gift that is one of the largest in the history of independent school philanthropy, the campaign was announced publicly in October 2021. To date, The Centennial Campaign has generated more than $194 million toward its goal of $200 million and is poised to surpass the goal ahead of schedule.

4 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

“ The impact on students is profound and the gratitude from faculty, students, and staff is immeasurable.” – Bob Fass, Chief Advancement Officer

Students moving in to Jones Dorm fall 2022

Alumni, parents, and friends have given generously and consistently and have focused squarely on Webb’s priorities despite the many challenges in the world around us. Giving has been centered on students and their experiences, outstanding teachers and excellent teaching, and the infrastructure that supports it all. The list of accomplishments is long and inspiring. “As Chairman of the Development Committee, I’ve had the great honor to use this opportunity to think deeply about my family’s philanthropy and about my hopes and dreams for Webb,” says Michael Chang ’92, P ’23. “Together with my wife Alicia, we established an endowed scholarship fund, we put Webb in our estate plan, I asked my father to join in our fund, and we’ve supported a variety of initiatives including The Webb Fund, the Alf Museum, and Webb’s DEI efforts. One of my favorite jobs is to host alumni events and bring the community together. We’ve done so in San Francisco and Hong Kong, and each time we gather, I am overwhelmed by our collective love of Webb. Everyone supports the school differently in ways that are deeply personal and meaningful, but each of us is forever connected to each other and to this place.” Chief Advancement Officer Bob Fass agrees. “Michael and I not only worked together in support of this campaign, we both had children graduate last year and experience Webb for themselves. It was exciting

to watch Ian Chang ’23 and Riley Fass ’23 benefit from the many initiatives that were completed as a result of The Centennial Campaign.” Centennial Plaza is a prime example. The project features a sweeping and dramatic new entrance to campus and includes an all-school, natural, outdoor seating amphitheater, beautiful pathways, landscaping and benches. Completed while our students were away due to COVID, this iconic project added critical community gathering space on campus. “When we emerged from distance learning to our full campus activity, COVID was still very much a concern,” says Fass. “We had a tent on Centennial Field for the better part of a year and it was considered a safe space for students, families, faculty and staff to meet. We held two commencements there. One, a delayed celebration for the Class of 2020. The others, full commencements for the WSC and VWS Classes of 2021. It was the site of many other events including our Centennial Celebration in 2022, the largest in-person event on the school’s campus.” A related project adjacent to the plaza is the new community center, recently renamed in honor of Taylor B. Stockdale for his decades-long service to Webb. “The Stockdale Community Center is a hub of student activity,” says Chang. “It is a venue for large events like dances, theme week, weekend activities, and movies,

but it is also a community gathering space for smaller meetings, study groups, clubs, speakers, etc. What strikes me most about the Center is how seamlessly it blends our shared history from its origin as the old gym to the modern look, feel, and function of a university commons. It even has its own coffee shop, Café 1175.” Expanse of space had been a common theme within this campaign. In 2017, Webb made a strategic purchase of 75-acres of hillside property to the north of Chandler Field, doubling the school’s total property to 150 acres. In 2022, Webb unveiled McMillin Park, a natural amphitheater at the crossroads on the site of the former stone hut where Larry McMillin taught his beloved Individual Humanities courses. The site is used for community gatherings large and small under the canopy of Webb’s beautiful oak trees. The W. Russell Fawcett Library is also undergoing a transformation as a reimagined modern library for the next century. Phase one of the project was completed in 2023 involving interior work and new furnishings, while phase two is slated to begin in 2024 with renovation and construction of a new innovation wing. More than a repository for books, the library is now a communal space for collaboration and experiential learning complete with the technological infrastructure to support it.

The Alf Museum has seen several projects completed within the campaign including a new fossil prep lab, a research lab, and a brand new museum collections system allowing for expanded storage capacity. Another museum storage facility is presently under construction. The museum also saw the creation of new endowed funds including one in honor of retired museum director Don Lofgren. The sciences benefitted from major renovations of multiple labs and a new science laboratory is under construction to be opened in January 2024—all of which were made possible thanks to generous donations. Another major area of focus was in the residential program. Every student dorm room is now air conditioned and major upgrades were made to safety and fire suppression systems. Likewise, faculty housing has been renovated throughout campus and continues to be a major priority resulting in the purchase of new land on Towne Avenue to become future faculty homes. Lastly, the Vivian Webb Chapel, a crown jewel of the Webb campus, has begun critical infrastructure upgrades to preserve and protect it for future generations. “These are many of the physical manifestations seen throughout the past few years,” says Fass, “but there are

THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2022-23 7

many more important initiatives you can’t see. Among them, and key to our success, is a focus on increasing Webb’s endowment.” One of the most important priorities of this campaign is to open Webb to the world. This bold and ambitious initiative strives to dramatically increase our financial aid endowment to ensure that Webb can enroll and support every student with the drive to succeed and the passion to contribute to our schools. Since the start of The Centennial Campaign, Webb’s endowment has grown from $33 million to $61 million including doubling the amount dedicated to financial aid. Moreover, Webb has redefined financial aid to include non-tuition assistance for activities, technology, travel, and more, in an attempt to more fully support students in their total Webb experience. For the 2023–24 year, Webb offered $6.4 million in needbased financial aid to students and their families. It is a substantial amount made possible by the dedication of our donor community. “Alicia and I started our endowed scholarship fund during my 20th reunion,” recalls Chang, “but it grew most substantially in recent years during this campaign. We’ve had three named scholars and I get excited each year when I see the report given to donors about the students they support. Two years ago, I met a young man at commencement who had been given our scholarship and was on his way to Amherst. Webb prepared him for that opportunity and more importantly, he prepared himself. Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but feel like we played a small role in his future as his mother thanked me for giving him the opportunity. It’s a feeling you just can’t shake. It’s infectious and it drives me to do more and help others.” The endowment is also far reaching in its support of faculty, staff, and academic programs. “Recruiting, retaining, and supporting the finest faculty is essential for our future,” says Fass. “Faculty funds are used to underwrite positions, award professional development opportunities, provide resources for course development, encourage academic partnerships, and more. And this year we’ve added an endowed award in celebration of the staff to provide similar recognition for excellence and achievement.” New endowed programmatic funds have also been added in support of the Alf Museum, humanities, mathematics, science, orchestra, performing arts, world languages, and general academic support.

8 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Within The Centennial Campaign, Webb has raised $19.6 million in annual operating support. This includes The Webb Fund, Alf Museum, The Affiliates, DEI initiatives, athletics, arts, weekend activities, transportation, leadership programs, and so much more. These mission critical funds provide budget alleviating support for the school to sustain its operations and increase its margin of excellence. These are the funds that affect the day-to-day life of Webb students, faculty, and staff. They are the life blood of our program nourishing the entire community. They are also the most inclusive with thousands of donors collectively working toward a common goal. “It is noteworthy that The Next 100: The Centennial Campaign set an aspirational goal for the future that includes a healthy amount of future philanthropy in the form of deferred gifts,” says Chang. “This is great news for Webb’s second century, but it does not diminish our present need. Once realized, these gifts will propel Webb significantly ahead, while at the same time, we must meet the reality that Webb needs us now more than ever. Our collective support is the engine that drives our current program and fuels our ambitions.” Gifts and pledges to The Centennial Campaign have quite literally transformed the campus, opened Webb to a wider audience, and fostered academic innovation across the campus. “The impact on students is profound and the gratitude from faculty, students, and staff is immeasurable,” says Fass. “Webb is a different place, a better place, a dynamic place that is poised for its next 100 years, because of you—our donors. It’s a beautiful cycle, each generation paying forward to the next the gratitude for and opportunity of a Webb education. Thank you!”

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Supporting Inclusion Through Financial Aid Webb is committed to fostering an inclusive school community characterized by openness, acceptance, and empathy, where all members are valued, respected, and supported. Director of Equity John Choi and Assistant Director of Equity Gretel Barsotti work hard to help our community live this committment. Their office collaborates with many student-sponsored clubs and affinity groups to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. Wanting everyone to feel at home and comfortable on Webb’s campus, Marina Saeger ’23 worked alongside Mr. Choi and others to establish a new affinity group specifically for first generation or low-income students. This piece captures her voice, as she explains her motivation and her accomplishment in building this program.

“ Through Webb’s DEI program, I met with multiple faculty

members and administrators to fine-tune the start of this group. We brainstormed what a space for first generation and low-income identifying students (or as we like to call it, FLIers) would look like and researched what prestigious institutions including Rice University and Amherst College had in place for supporting all socioeconomic backgrounds. For the first time at Webb, I genuinely felt I could tell my story. They took my opinions into account, like the need for privacy so students feel comfortable in the affinity space. Feeling the support of the Webb community behind me, the FLIers affinity group debuted in the Fall of 2022. My proudest moment was seeing just how many freshmen came to the affinity meetings. I created a space for these students to belong, just like what I wanted when I was a bright-eyed freshman coming to Webb for the first time.

The Equity Office hosts monthly Storytelling Sessions that welcome anyone in the community to tell their own story in their own words. Since its inception in 10 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

A Storytelling Session in Fawcett Library fills the space with students, faculty, and staff.

2021, over 40 stories from faculty, staff, students, and local activists have been heard. Stories have ranged from immigration experiences and being multi-racial to family celebrations of Ramadan and the struggles of being first generation or low-income at Webb. They have been funny, gripping, educational, vulnerable, inspiring, and meaningful. During her junior year, Marina was one such individual who told her story.

“ I had the idea to talk about my socioeconomic status and

how it influenced my Webb experience. Mr. Choi excitedly supported this since this was a topic that hadn’t been covered yet. It was difficult for me to narrow down exactly what I wanted to talk about. I could mention all the times students made fun of my parents’ broken-down minivan, but what if those students showed up to the storytelling session? I could talk about the times I was afraid to reach out for funds to participate in Webb-sponsored trips, but shouldn’t I be grateful that those funds are there in the first place? What if my friends viewed me differently or pitied me after hearing about my background?

I went through with the storytelling anyway. A fun fact about storytelling- we have a hand signal to connect the audience to the presenter. This is achieved by pointing your thumb at yourself and your pinky at the speaker and shaking back and forth, basically saying “I relate to your story and I see you.” To my surprise, the majority of the audience gave me this signal multiple times throughout my presentation. I felt so much love throughout and after- all of my fears of backlash disappeared. People not only related to my story but looked up to it. Peers I knew- and some who I didn’t- thanked me for sharing my story and bringing a voice to the struggles students experience being on financial aid. I saw myself in all the underclassmen who shared their own experiences with me. My heart hurt thinking of how many others felt as though they couldn’t tell their stories. I wanted to ensure that no Webbie ever goes through the isolation I did when I thought there was no one who understood my experiences. That was why the FLI affinity was created, so no Webbies had to feel as if their experiences were invalid or unimportant.

Webb students, faculty, and staff on their way to the People of Color Conference, made possible through gifts to DEI.

outside the scope of the DEI program, I witness perspectives changing. College guidance recognized just how important finances were in some students’ college process and helped connect students to financial aid and scholarship information. Just through visibility, friends, peers, and faculty reflected on where they stood socioeconomically and how they could contribute to making Webb a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

DEI information session during Alumni Weekend 2022

By helping students to feel they belong, by centering their stories in the community, Webb’s DEI programming supports our entire program. This deep sense of community can be felt in every area of Webb, from athletics and academics to college guidance and alumni events. The impact of this continues to be felt by students, faculty, and staff.

All of this is made possible by the generous support of the Webb community. Through gifts to DEI and financial aid, students like Marina can attend and thrive at Webb. There are additional funds to assist students with costs scholarships don’t cover such as Homecoming tickets, laundry money, and yearbooks, to ensure everyone can experience all that Webb has to offer. One such fund is the newly created Alumni Equity Fund. See page 45 for more information. To help make a Webb education accessible to all, contact the Advancement Office at (909) 482-5206 or giving@webb.org today.

“ I never expected how much of an impact FLI-ers could

have on the rest of the Webb community. FLI-ers hosted community discussions centered on destigmatizing talking about socioeconomic status. Many of these discussions ended with student responses like this. Spreading awareness was a vital element in empowering FLI students. Bringing in socioeconomic status to conversations surrounding diversity made such a difference in how we viewed identity spaces. Even

12 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

The Webb Fund

Last year, over 1,200 members of the Webb community made a gift, with most selecting The Webb Fund as their preferred area of support. That’s because our donor community understands in order to meet the increasingly complex operational needs of our 150-acre campus home, our administration requires the flexible resources designated to address our most urgent and highest priorities. The Webb Fund does just that, acting as an essential component of life at The Webb Schools. It touches every aspect of the student experience, ensuring Webb’s margin of excellence in all areas, while sustaining many features of the academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs found here and nowhere else. By creating resources for immediate use by our faculty and staff, it also enables us to take a bold look at our future, allowing our educators to plan for new curriculum initiatives, as well as exciting afternoon and weekend activities for today’s boarding and day students. Supporting Webb’s year-round projects inside and outside of the classroom is one of The Webb Fund’s main goals. Thanks to The Webb Fund, critical projects in dormitories, classrooms, athletic facilities, the Alf Museum, the Vivian Webb Chapel, and other campus spaces can be addressed without hesitation. Offices across campus rely on The Webb Fund for the resources to conduct everything from standard maintenance and upkeep to the latest renovations and innovations. For instance, Webb recently purchased three pairs of VR goggles that are housed in the library to give students immersive experiences and personalized learning opportunities in subjects such as gross anatomy. There is no project too big or too small for The Webb Fund.

The Webb Fund also provides resources which allow our faculty to offer a unique blend of student leadership programs, afternoon activities, clubs, and unbounded extracurricular opportunities. Alumnus Derek Deskey ’83, experienced these programs firsthand, contributing this thought ahead of his 40th class reunion. “Webb allowed me to develop skills to advocate for myself and become more independent. Webb’s education was transformational for me; it is something that I am lucky to have experienced!” Faculty also receive support from The Webb Fund to attend conferences and trainings. In addition to taking advantage of professional development opportunities which keep them on the forefront of curriculum development and instruction, Webb supports its educators in seeking out and attaining advanced degrees and trainings. Alumnus and Assistant Head of School Michael Hoe ’04 said this of giving to The Webb Fund: “I know, firsthand, how significantly it impacts our ability to sustain our program[s]. It is a way that I know I can invest in the present and, more importantly, the future of Webb”. It is thanks to donors at all levels, each year, that Webb can attract and retain a community of dedicated teachers committed to the highest quality education of our entire student body. The Webb Fund runs between July 1 through June 30 each year. If you have any questions regarding a gift to The Webb Fund, or you would like to establish a monthly or annually recurring gift, please contact Peter Gilman, director of The Webb Fund at (909) 482-5288 or pgilman@webb.org.

Giving Day 2023

Nearly a full month ahead of its launch, gifts began to trickle in, as the Office of Advancement started receiving phone calls and emails from community members anticipating yet another successful installment of Webb’s annual Giving Day. Held in the spring semester of the academic year since 2018, the sixth occurrence of this well-beloved philanthropic tradition was an unqualified success. Setting a new 36-hour donor record, over 500 members of the Webb community came together from several countries around the globe and a majority of states across the nation. More than $400,000 in combined support was contributed by alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Alumni were especially key to helping the campaign exceed its goal, with the Class of 2004 taking the title for most alumni donors in a single class before the Giving Day’s conclusion. Yet to achieve success, Giving Day relies upon community members from near and far, recent graduates and graduates from several decades past. This year, alumni who graduated Webb as recently as 2022 and as long ago as 1952 answered the call, stepping up to do their part at a level most meaningful to them. Volunteers are also critical to Webb's success, spreading the word across social media and reaching out via email, text message, and phone call to encourage their own networks to join with them by making a gift during Giving Day. Some volunteers also rally support by issuing a matching or challenge gift, helping others to maximize their giving by doubling or even tripling the dollars contributed by their fellow classmates, parents, or friends.

14 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Donors chose a myriad of areas to designate their support toward, selecting The Webb Fund, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, financial aid, DEI initiatives, athletics, and student life. Vital to helping The Webb Fund reach its annual goals, all gifts made during this annual campaign have a direct and immediate impact in the lives of the faculty and students on campus year-round. Without Giving Day, the margin of excellence in programs found across all aspects of life at Webb and the Alf Museum wouldn’t be nearly as robust. Looking ahead to the seventh annual Giving Day expected to run in the spring of 2024, save the date for Wednesday, April 17–Thursday, April 18, at which time the Office of Advancement will once again call upon each member of the Webb community to do their part to maintain the truly one-of-a-kind living and learning experience found here at Webb.

Champions of Generosity

Honoring our Champions of Generosity

Webb alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends are the very heart of the school and all we do. Their unwavering commitment has been instrumental in strengthening Webb and ensuring its future. Webb’s donors are culturally, demographically, and generationally diverse. Their varying backgrounds, characteristics, and perspectives provide for improved community representation and a more inclusive approach to addressing Webb’s philanthropic needs. Webb is profoundly grateful to these outstanding individuals and their enduring devotion and dedication. Every story is unique, and it is a privilege to introduce you to some of these champions of generosity from the Webb community.

“Where it’s needed most…” Will Allan ’94 is both an alumnus and a 24-year faculty member in the humanities department. “I donate because it allows Webb to continue to invest in itself and remain an educational leader.” With 27 years of giving, Will has made gifts for financial aid, the museum, Affiliates Benefit, and The Webb Fund. When asked if he will continue his support, Will says “Of course. I want Webb to continue to be an extraordinary school. I trust Webb and know they will put my funds where it’s needed most.”

16 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

“Love for the museum…” Amy and Dane Stoddard are parents of alumni, Robert ’15 and Maddie ’18. As a 14-year staff member and donor, Amy is forever grateful for the support Dr. Don Lofgren and Dr. Andy Farke gave to her children while students at Webb. To this day, she remains impressed by their guidance and care in helping students contribute to scientific research publications. Amy shared, “I’ve had a love for the museum from the beginning and feel it’s important to give other students the opportunity to enjoy this world-class resource, unique program, and all of its hands-on opportunities.”

“Accessible and inclusive…” Nick Lee ’22 is a recent graduate, now studying at Brown University. He is grateful for Webb’s role in his academic development and personal growth. Nick credits support from the alumni community for making his experience possible and now wants to do his part for others by donating to Webb. “I believe in supporting financial aid and DEI programs on campus to ensure Webb is financially accessible and has an inclusive community for everyone.”

“Opportunities for students…” Monica Atiyeh Whitaker ’96 is a presiding administrative law judge and appreciates the greater values Webb instilled in her, including the strong foundation of confidence, independence, selfsufficiency, and responsibility. As a former museum trustee and a Webb donor of 27 years, Monica says, “Giving back is important because Webb has done so much for me. I like to support scholarships for Peccary trips, so students can have the opportunity to participate in these unique adventures, and perhaps even make history!”

“Enduring relationships…” Fletcher Strickler ’67 is the glue that helps keep the “Mighty Class of 1967” together. It’s been 34 years since Fletcher’s first gift to Webb, so it’s no surprise that he helped shepherd the effort to raise funds for McMillin Park, in honor of esteemed Webb educator, Laurence McMillin. Says Fletcher, “Webb is family. Giving to Webb and the museum allows me to support the school that supported me and to honor the relationships I had with my classmates and some of Webb’s masters.” Philanthropy ensures that financial constraints do not limit access for students to the exceptional educational experience and personal growth that Webb provides. As we reflect on the invaluable contributions of these loyal and longtime donors and the unwavering support of Webb’s entire donor community, we are reminded of the profound impact a shared vision can have on an institution. Indeed, this strengthens the fabric and well-being of our community, and it is an investment in the future of generations to come.

“Connection to Community…”

If you would like to make a gift to Webb, please do so at webb.org/giving or call the Office of Advancement at (909) 482-5206.

Laila and Mark Sharifi are parents of alumnus, Jake ’21 and current student, Josef ’26. From the beginning, Laila and Mark have felt a deep personal connection to the Webb community due to a high level of engagement from faculty, staff, administration, parents, and others. “We feel so blessed for Webb’s role in shaping the development, trajectory, and potential of our children. We want other families to experience this which is why we will continue to give.” THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2022-23 17

Webb Wednesday

On Wednesdays, we wear Webb. To show school pride, Webbies on campus have been tasked with wearing Webb gear on Wednesdays for quite some time. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the Alumni Office took this idea worldwide by asking alumni to show their Webb spirit while highlighting that even apart, we are united. Alumni shared photos sporting their Webb gear, some of which was vintage. As staff, faculty, and students returned to campus, this spirit of Webb Wednesday continued. It was a way to unite the community and show school pride each week. And due to its fun alliteration, Webb Wednesday was here to stay. At the start of the 2022–2023 school year, the Alumni Office decided to take this celebration to the next level, bridging the current Webb community with the worldwide Webb family. One Wednesday a month, the Alumni Office claimed a spot outside of Price Dining Hall, brought out a big multi-colored spinning wheel marked with different items of Webb swag, and offered the chance to win a prize to anyone wearing Webb gear. These prizes ranged from stickers to pens, to the most coveted prize of all—the latest edition of the Webb Wednesday t-shirt. Throughout the school year, students (and faculty!) filed eagerly to the Dining Hall, adorned in their Webb best, to test their fate and see what Webb swag they could win. Anticipation around landing on the t-shirt wheel wedge was not hard to find, especially when the newest design was revealed and needed to be obtained. Whether it be the classic blue design, the popular pink, the green mountain design, or the endearing brown bear with sunglasses, these limited-edition Webb items gave Webbies something to bond over. The excitement was palpable, from students to staff and faculty. The thrill of the spin was underlined with

18 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

a new point of engagement from the Alumni Office: an opportunity to get to know the students that will one day turn into alumni, who we hope will graduate with a feeling of gratitude and appreciation for their alma mater. At the annual Senior Dinner, an event hosted by the Alumni Office to welcome the senior class into the alumni community, the seniors are gifted small tokens to remember their time at Webb. To go along with their traditional class mugs, a new gift was envisioned for the Class of 2023. Bouncing off the success of Webb Wednesday, a special Webb Wednesday logo was designed just for the Class of 2023 utilizing their class color: pink. But what would the logo go on? In classic Webb Wednesday flare, there had to be some drama involved: let the wheel decide. After producing and showing a video spinning for the class as a whole, the wheel landed on the coveted t-shirt slice, which brought an eruption of cheers from seniors in the Stockdale Community Center. Each senior was gifted a t-shirt and sticker with the new design to take with them as they head out into the world and to their future colleges and universities, keeping the global Webb Wednesday tradition alive in the coming years. The program continues to blossom, and the hope is that these new alumni will keep Webb near and dear to their hearts as they make their mark on the world. School pride is hard to measure, but it is easy to feel. As this tradition continues, all alumni are welcome to join in this show of school spirit and pride. Each Wednesday, we hope you think of your alma mater and share the same excitement for this special community. Post a photo of you in Webb gear and we will spin the wheel for you. You never know what it will land on.

Faculty

A Community of Faculty BY MORGAN KAPP, DEAN OF FACULTY Just like everything at Webb, being Dean of Faculty is multidimensional and full of personal meaning. In this new role, not only do I have the privilege to recognize and amplify the work of the incredible educators on campus, but for me, it feels like a way to show my gratitude for a community who has fostered my growth as a teacher, encouraged me as a coach, and supported me as a neighbor. Every single year I learn so much from my colleagues. Whether they are a new teacher or veteran or even in my department or not, there is so much to gain from each person who chooses Webb in their career. We are a community of educators continuously looking to polish our craft, meet the diverse needs of our students and share the joy of our content areas. And Webb students make this work so rewarding! I have loved hearing how the new faculty this year are so impressed with how Webb students seek connections with faculty, make such insightful contributions to class discussions, are able to engage with new content in class and make connections to their lives and previous courses.

Trobaugh brainstorming the shadiest possible route for cross country practice. I am so grateful that we are able to do our work in a community. The joy and expertise that each faculty member brings to the community is absolutely inspiring. Being a Webb faculty member also means being a neighbor. We are a community who lends each other our cars, picks each other up from the airport, celebrates life milestones, passes down our children’s clothing to one another and shares meals with each other in times of need. Last October when my son was born, I didn’t cook for a month! My friends, my neighbors, my colleagues, the Webb faculty brought such generous meals to help me navigate those first weeks of being a parent. I am so happy that my son will grow up not only being doted on by students at Community Dinner, but also knowing what it feels like to live in a community and knowing what it means to support each other and make our lives richer by being together and learning amongst such wonderful Webb students!

So much of our collaboration and sharing of ideas happens at the lunch tables. Whether we are in the Dining Hall or under the umbrellas outside, our conversations naturally lead to weekend trip ideas for students, Unbounded trip ideas and brainstorming, and just wanting to know more about each other's courses! This year I have loved hearing about the framing of the Mysticism humanities course. And how the teaching team of Global Gender Studies is finding their collaboration to be fruitful and empowering. It’s also quite possible that under the umbrellas you’ll see Coach Flucker jump up and demonstrate a track drill and Coach Humanities teacher Anthony Flucker in the classroom

Perry Awards

The Perry Awards were established and endowed in 1995 by generous donors to honor the life and work of former faculty Les and Barbara Perry, who devoted thirty years to the students of Webb and served the school loyally and in many capacities. The Perry Awards serve as a tangible reward for a job well done and for extraordinary dedication to the growth and development of Webb students.

22 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

THE 2022-23 PERRY AWARD WINNERS: Stefanie Plumley, Fine Arts Ms. Stefanie Plumley not only leads the Fine Arts Department, but also directs all student plays and musicals. Plumley has worked as an educator for 20 years, including 15 at Webb. “In the past three years, Ms. Plumley has been tested, tried and thrown every single wrench possible in trying to navigate how to run our arts program. However, with incredible grace, flexibility, and empathy, she has been able to not just allow our arts program to survive, but thrive throughout the pandemic,” current Assistant Head of School Mr. Michael Hoe ’04 said. Plumley managed to stage a play with student actors who lived across the globe appearing remotely, shifted arts programs outdoors and engaged students effectively online in a field that relies heavily on in-person contact. “Whether it was the outdoor play production during the peak of the pandemic, the outdoor concerts and rehearsals, the revival of Mamma Mia!, the outdoor dance performance, or otherwise, Ms. Plumley has been able to provide a full, engaging, and incredibly rich experience for all of our students,” he said. He also noted her leadership in the department. “Her dedication and passion to the program has helped fuel growth at our more advanced level courses, and she continues to find ways to push the boundaries of our program in an unbounded way.”

Mark Dzula, Teaching & Learning Resources In addition to his role as director of teaching and learning resources, Dr. Mark Dzula is a dorm parent for Jones Dormitory, a journalism teacher, advisor to the Webb Canyon Chronicle, accreditation coordinator, Jubilee coordinator, COVID testing center coordinator and plays bass in a band. Dzula, an educator for 15 years, has been at Webb for eight years. “What Dr. Mark Dzula has been able to juggle and do has been nothing short of incredible,” Hoe said. “His willingness to adapt, be flexible and jump into any roles that Webb needs is just a fraction of how much he means to our community,” said Hoe. “Dr. Dzula

has done a phenomenal job in creating a safe, nurturing, inclusive and open residential community. Similarly, in the library, Dr. Dzula has done an incredible job creating an inviting and studious space to ensure that students have somewhere to go to focus, be productive and also still feel like they are part of a community,” stated Hoe. Dzula took over responsibility for Webb’s COVID testing center. “From staffing the testing center to overseeing the data entry and reporting, to thinking about the schedules and protocols for our community, much of the time and energy that he has put into this process is not publicly visible,” he said. “But it certainly has not gone unnoticed.”

Susanna Linsley, Experiential Learning Dr. Suzi Linsley guides her peers in incorporating experiential elements into their instruction, an essential element of the Alf Method of instruction that is core to Webb’s pursuit of unbounded education. She also runs Webb’s Junior Scholars Summer Program, coordinates Webb’s trips program and the biennial Unbounded Days, and teaches courses in Webb’s Humanities Department. Dean of Faculty for the 2022-23 year Michael Szanyi praised Linsley—who has been at Webb for eight years— for guiding her students to new discoveries. “Suzi Linsley is not shy in moving herself, or her students out of their comfort zones,” he said. “Whether it’s through her leadership, her classes or through the vital programs in Unbounded Days and the Summer Junior Scholars Program that she leads that are central to our mission, Suzi acts to cultivate our curiosity and desire to connect to the world around us,” Szanyi stated. Linsley, he noted, has a history of this type of work. In 2017, she traveled to Oaxaca to practice Spanish and build comfort and familiarity working and traveling in Mexico. The experience helped inform her instruction for such classes as Global Indigenous Studies, the Politics and Culture of the U.S. Mexico Border and Latin American Studies.

Faculty Awards The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award Eric Hansen, Humanities Mr. Eric Hansen has quickly become known as a true Renaissance individual whose exceptional dedication and diverse talents have earned him widespread admiration. In the classroom, Hansen has nurtured countless minds, instilling a deep appreciation for literature, philosophy, writing, poetry, and the arts. His insightful, engaging, and supportive teaching style ignites intellectual curiosity in his students, fostering an authentic love for learning. Additionally, in four short years, Hansen has transformed Webb’s wrestling program by helping his athletes develop into disciplined, resilient competitors. Hansen’s commitment to the sport goes beyond victories and trophies, as he prioritizes instilling values of sportsmanship and camaraderie in his team, creating a supportive and truly inclusive environment where each member thrives. As a scholar, Hansen was accepted into the prestigious Orion Magazine Environmental Writers’ Workshop this past summer. Webb is also thrilled that Hansen now serves as the WSC Honor Committee Faculty Advisor and hopes that the McMillin Award enables him to explore restorative justice trainings and workshops as he helps others to think about the role of honor at Webb. In recognition of his unwavering commitment and his positive impact on the Webb community, the 2022–23 McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award goes to Mr. Eric Hansen. The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by David Loo ’79.

James T. Demetriades ’80 Endowed Prize for Unbounded Thinking Sonsoles Cardalliaguet, World Languages Ms. Sonsoles Cardalliaguet is a powerhouse. From Spanish 1 to AP Spanish Literature and Language, Cardalliaguet asks her students to live the language, dive into the culture, and find their voice as they learn more about the world around them. As Lead Class Advisor for many years, she has pushed faculty to think about what makes for a good yearly experience for the students. She

24 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

has led the sophomores, juniors, and seniors on trips that ask them to connect, push, and reflect, and she has always found a way to sneak in a few extra movie nights, crafts, and pizza parties. Her unboundedness comes in many forms, but it is perhaps most striking in the care that she has for the kids on campus. Whether that’s in the classroom, during advisory, or at her home, Cardalliaguet has acted in the best interest of so many students as they connect with her for guidance, for community, and for comfort. She is kind and generous with her time, energy, and passion for the health and well-being of those around her. Webb is excited to see how she continues to embrace unbounded education as she helps the school to understand what an advanced studies curriculum could look like in the World Languages Department. For her dedication to thoughtful actions, teaching, connection, and expression, the 2022–23 James T. Demetriades ’80 Prize goes to Ms. Sonsoles Cardalliaguet. The James T. Demetriades ’80 Prize for Unbounded Thinking was established and endowed by James T. Demetriades ’80.

Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award Melanie Bauman, Health & Wellness It is impossible to think about the health and well-being of this campus without thinking about all the ways that Ms. Melanie Bauman has taken care of the Webb community. Sometimes it’s a late night or weekend phone call. Sometimes it’s a check-in during her morning walk. No matter the time, no matter the constituency, whether it’s seeking advice, looking for information, or needing a friendly conversation, Bauman is a bedrock of this community, whose love and care for everyone permeates her actions. Bauman helped guide the start of the year to bring the community back safely from summer. She then quickly jumped into helping create dorm culture and understand student needs, and she has continued throughout the year helping everyone stay healthy during the fall flu season, collect data through health surveys, update protocols, lead the Peer Advisors, guide Freshman Seminar, plan community events, and help process grief. It was a busy year, and Bauman took on the task of taking care of the entire Webb community during a rather chaotic time. Bauman listens with empathy. She offers advice with care. She promotes work

with purpose. It’s no small feat to take on the wellness of a community, and she has done this with love, with kindness, with eagerness, and with unending efforts to support everyone so that they can thrive. For helping Webb to find meaning, grounding, and perspective, for her spirit that honors the importance of taking care of each other, and through it all, for still advocating for balance, humor, and the joys in life, the 2022–23 Jean E. Miller Award goes to Ms. Melanie Bauman. The Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by the Affiliates of The Webb Schools.

Thompson and Vivian Webb Award Kenny Nguyen, Math & Computer Science In just one short year, Dr. Kenny Nguyen has instantaneously brought our community joy since his first day on campus. If you have been lucky enough to see Dr. Nguyen interacting with different folks on campus, you would have no idea that he has only been at Webb for such a short time as his impact on our community has been indelible. He has quickly become a trusted advisor and teacher, someone that students in Jameson look forward to seeing every Sunday evening for duty, a Swiss army knife during math labs helping students with any and all levels of math, a crucial leader on the yearbook staff, and a key mentor for our AAPI affinity spaces who encourages students to explore their identities and share their stories with the community at large. Dr. Nguyen epitomizes the “all-in” spirit of Webb – stepping in to help support his colleagues whenever they need it, spending countless hours to ensure students feel confident in their math abilities before they take their assessments, and always showing up to support students throughout various campus events and happenings. Dr. Nguyen’s reach is far and wide, and he works tirelessly to ensure that he is fostering an inclusive space wherever he is on campus. For his deep commitment to the Webb community and the extraordinary impact that he has been able to make in such a short period of time, the 2022–23 Thompson and Vivian Webb Award goes to Dr. Kenny Nguyen. The Thompson and Vivian Webb Award was endowed by Edmund L. Piper ’43.

John and Madeline Frampton Staff Celebration Award Andy Wong, Security John Frampton and Madeline Mead Frampton came from modest beginnings. Steeped in their commitment to each other and the family they nurtured, they worked hard, accomplished much, and sacrificed along the way to instill in their children life lessons about the importance of kindness, encouragement, humor, diligence, and honor. Among the first to acknowledge and celebrate the successes of others, the Frampton family wishes to follow their example by celebrating members of The Webb Schools’ staff for their own dedication and hard work, their achievements both small and large. The inaugural winner of this award is well known to Webb students, faculty, staff, as well as all campus visitors. He is often the first person we meet coming to campus or the last person we see when leaving. He always has a bright and kind disposition, a seriousness of purpose, and the kind of hustle that proves he is a man of action. Mr. Andy Wong began working at Webb in 2016 as a campus security officer. Faculty member Mr. Andrew Hamilton stated, "Andy is constantly in motion. He juggles communication with everyone with ease and careful attention. Andy may well know everything that happens on campus, and he is an important first stop for faculty arriving on weekend duty. Whenever I meet Andy on campus, I know I'll learn something." Faculty member Dr. Ardina Greco said, "Andy takes pride in his work. His care for Webb and his duties is visible. Students interact positively with him and often share stories about his animal-tracking skills. He is an invaluable help in the dorms and supports everyone on campus, and he does so with a smile and a caring manner." In addition, Andy's influence on the campus safety team is essential and he is highly deserving of this recognition. For his unmatched dedication and service to the safety of our community, the inaugural John and Madeline Frampton Staff Celebration Award goes to Mr. Andy Wong. The John and Madeline Frampton Staff Celebration Award was endowed anonymously in 2023.

From the Affiliates President

The Affiliates

The spirit and strength of parent volunteerism is alive and well at The Webb Schools.

Affiliates Executive Committee 2022–23

As is the case for most independent schools, Webb relies on parents’ support of our students’ academic, athletic, artistic, and extracurricular engagements. At Webb, parents truly raise the bar when it comes to giving back. This academic year, more than 50 members of the Webb parent community are serving in formal volunteer positions through the Affiliates, the official parent organization of The Webb Schools. At the heart of the Affiliates’ mission is our strong commitment to both fostering close relationships between Webb and the families they serve and supporting Webb’s efforts in ensuring all members of our community are valued and are welcomed at Webb. Residing in all corners of the globe, our parents foster communication between families, partner with Webb’s Advancement, DEI, Athletics, Fine Arts, and Museum teams, and solicit even more parent engagement through year-long volunteer opportunities. We help students celebrate their accomplishments on the stage, on the court, and on the field. We are proud to give back to the school that gives so much to our children. Coming into my third year as the President of the Affiliates, I am humbled by the opportunity to not only volunteer for my alma mater as both a parent and an alumna, but also to be part of a team of parents whose dedication to Webb—demonstrated by their contributions of time, talent, and treasure—is simply extraordinary. Legacy Hall of Fame We wish to give special recognition to the following donors who have given $1 million or more over the course of their lifetime to The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. Their philanthropy has transformed our campus and impacted the lives of generations of students. $5 MILLION OR MORE

Blake ’68 and Andrea Brown Blake Brown and his wife, Andrea, have helped to transform our campus and educational programs. Their gifts have helped bring the Alf Museum into the modern age with significant support for the Hall of Life campaign, a research laboratory and fossil prep laboratory. They also supported the renovation of a NextGen science lab allowing for the highest level of research, the construction of new faculty housing and the renovation of student dorms, and a major renovation of Hooper Community Center in addition to the land acquisition adjacent to campus.

James D. ’42 and Lin Burke Few people or events have had the powerful impact that Jim and Lin Burke have had on Webb. The Burkes’ leadership gift to Webb came in the form of a family cabin on a lake. The cabin and surrounding property were sold for over $6 million, making the Burkes’ gift one of the largest in Webb’s history. With the proceeds of that sale, Webb built the Copeland Donahue Theater in 2008, the first new construction of an academic building since 1987. Jim and Lin’s gift will continue a family legacy of giving back by providing financial aid to deserving students.

Wayne “Skip” ’59 and Sharon Hanson Wayne “Skip” Hanson often said that when he arrived at Webb in the mid-1950s, he felt he had come home. Skip and his wife, Sharon, believed that all students should be able to receive a Webb education, no matter their financial resources—to feel the same sense of “home” he felt. In 1990, Skip, along with his brother Robert ’62 and their father Wayne, created the Bertha M. Lynch Principes Scholarship in memory of their maternal grandmother. The scholarship supports students who demonstrate academic excellence, qualities of admirable character, leadership potential and the ability to contribute positively to the spirit and life of the Webb community. Their incredible generosity will impact generations of students who, like Skip, call Webb home.

Col. John S. Rogers USAF (RET.) ’59 and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation During the past three decades, Col. John and June Rogers and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation have transformed the lives of Webb students. Through the Mary Stuart Rogers Endowed Scholarship and the Raymond M. Alf Peccary Society Chair, more than 270 students have received financial aid and the opportunity of a Webb education. In addition to his dedication to growing the schools’ endowment, Col. New Fund for Student Support In an ongoing effort to sustain a sense of inclusion and belonging in the Webb community, the Board of Trustees established the Alumni Endowed Fund for Equity and Student Support to provide additional resources to ensure all Webb students have access to the full breadth of our program. Enhanced funding will be provided to students who have extra needs above the cost of tuition. This fund, created in consultation with alumni who received financial aid during their Webb years, acknowledges that there are costs associated with the full Webb experience that are not covered by scholarships alone. Technology, travel, weekend activities, dances, conferences, athletic uniforms, yearbooks, etc., are all part of what makes Webb special.

Students will have access to an easy and private application procedure to request funds for personal use. Approval will be granted by the Dean of Campus Life based on availability of funds and demonstrated financial need. Need is determined by the Office of Admission and Financial Aid at the time of enrollment. The size of the endowed fund is still relatively small, but alumni are invited to consider this form of support in their overall giving. It is a great way to impact deserving students through your philanthropy. To make a gift, please contact Christine Leible at (909) 482-5277 or cleible@webb.org, or Katherine Vieser at (909) 447-7077 or kvieser@webb.org

Thompson & Vivian Webb Society At Webb today, as in years past, we educate and inspire young people to act with honor and moral courage in everything they do. This combined with a drive for academic excellence provides our moral compass and forms our mission. Webb nurtures smart, curious, and independent-minded students to become bold and courageous leaders. You can help perpetuate these values by ensuring that we are able to support the best and brightest students without regard to a family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Our mission and our future depend on it.

64 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Webb’s enduring legacy can be your personal legacy when you partner with us to protect and enrich these incredibly important values by including The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum in your philanthropic planning. There are many ways to do so: • A provision in your will or living trust; • Beneficiary designation of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement plan; • Beneficiary designation of life insurance; • Charitable trusts; • Charitable gift annuities. Please contact us for more information on joining the Thompson & Vivian Webb Society: Bob Fass Chief Advancement Officer bfass@webb.org (909) 482-5260 Danielle Gordon Director of Development dgordon@webb.org (909) 482-5267

GIVING

Giving Expands Museum Outreach Programs Annual giving to the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology supports a host of signature programming including scholarships for Peccary Trips, management of their world-class collections, and of course the extensive outreach programs that museum educators conduct all year long. “We really take Ray Alf’s words, ‘What will you do with your moment of time,’ to heart when it comes to education and outreach at the museum. We don’t just show fossils and tell facts to our audiences. We work hard to share real science stories and help audiences understand that through all these billions of years of time, all the millions of lives that came before, their brief moment still matters. Through our innovative programs and incredible educators, we want every person we engage with to understand that their actions affect the world around them and all those that come after. That’s what we want to do with our moment of time,” says Director of Visitor Engagement and Education Gabriel-Philip Santos. Outreach programs throughout the year include hosting Discovery Days at the Alf Museum, popping up at First Fridays at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and serving as featured panelists at Comic Con, just to name a few, all in an effort to elevate the impact of the museum on the region, and to share knowledge and deepen the love of science across generations. Augustyn Family Curator of Paleontology Dr. Mairin Balisi says, “The Alf Museum's education and outreach efforts focus not just on sharing science that is already known, but also on generating new discoveries. New knowledge is

made right here, on the Alf / Webb campus, by our own students and staff scientists; and, instead of this knowledge being restricted to the campus or a paywalled academic journal, our students have the incredible opportunity to communicate their science with the world, ranging from informal channels like the Alf Museum’s social media to professional venues like academic conferences. This past year alone, all of my Advanced Studies in Paleontology students wrote about their original research for the Alf Instagram, and five of them further presented their work—ranging from faunal analysis of 80-million-year-old sharks in Wyoming to anatomical comparison of 50,000-year-old bobcats in Los Angeles—at a scientific conference. This coming year, I look forward to mentoring them toward further formalizing their research— publishing in open-access, peer-reviewed journals, for example—so that scientists everywhere can read and cite their work: as permanent a contribution to science as one can get! As befits a research institution, our thinking at the Alf Museum is truly unbounded, encompassing the world beyond campus.” Thank you to the loyal donors who support the Alf Museum and this important work every year. You make it possible for the museum to expand its impact as a leading resource in the scientific community. For more information on supporting the Alf Museum, please contact Danielle Gordon at dgordon@webb.org or (909) 482-5267.

PLANNED GIFTS

Bequests, Testamentary Trusts, Charitable Trusts, and Life Income Plans:

Webb accepts gifts of appreciated stock or mutual fund shares.

Planning a gift to The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum through your will or living trust can be achieved through a new document or a codicil to an existing document. You may specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate or a piece of personal property. Estate gifts made through a will or trust may also help reduce federal estate tax liability and allow you to create a charitable legacy that aligns with your personal values. The Advancement Office can help you make a decision regarding your financial plans, which can also include charitable gifts that pay you income during life or provide for your heirs.

Matching Gifts:

Retirement Assets:

Give Online: Make your tax-deductible gift immediately to The Webb Fund or Alf Museum. Go to webb.org/giving

Gifts of Securities:

Increase your giving power through matching gifts. Many companies will match the charitable contributions of their employees.

Gifts of Property: Property gifts can include real estate and tangible personal property such as antiques, art, and the like.

Donate part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan. If you are 72 or older as of July 1, 2021, you can also transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the withdrawal and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution.

Remainder Interest in a Personal Residence or Farm: You may retain a life interest in your home or farm while deeding the property to The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum. Though you may continue to live in or use the property, you may claim a tax deduction at the time the property is transferred.

Life Insurance: The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose. Life insurance can be used to cover charitable gifts made from your estate. Annuities may also be given to Webb or the museum. Contact Danielle Gordon at dgordon@webb.org or (909) 482-5267 for more information.
