Thank You! The positive response to the premier of THE WAG magazine has been overwhelming
As a result, we’re kicking off this edition with heartfelt thanks to our many readers who continue to express their thoughts and appreciation for the publication (p 25) And, a special thank you to our advertisers for their ongoing support.
This issue showcases a couple of divine stories that seem to substantiate Charles Bukowski’s quote from “The People Look Like Flowers at Last” that reads, Dogs and angels are not very far apart.
Without a doubt, it was a host of angels, along with some deliberate happenstance, that banded together saving the life of Angel Damone (p. 18).
Aleah
Gabriel’s Angels (p. 14) tells us about a legion of dogs that, through unconditional love, breaks cycles of violence and teaches life lessons to at-risk children.
It was a casual conversation with a new friend that made me realize the importance of considering senior dogs when adopting (p 21) I guess you could call it my “aha” moment as I suddenly realized the negative benefits of seniority in the arena of canine rescue–make it something to think about if you’re thinking of adding to your pack
We‘ve added a new section to THE WAG called Touching Tails offering reader-written stories about their pets. Writer Joyce Becker Lee shares her entertaining and poignant account (p 30)
From blood donation to best bedding for your buddy, this issue is chock full with information to peruse, share with your friends, and even read aloud to your four-legged companion Enjoy!
Remember to send us your suggestions, ideas, photos, and your story, if you have one, for Touching Tails. We’d love to hear from you! penny@thewagmagazine.com.
Wishing you and all our furry friends a sensational Spring
Like DUI, animal abuse is in need of more attention by the public and harsh sentences for first time offenders For many years drunk driving was laughed at and lightly punished if any punishment was applied at all Organizations like MADD and others started to monitor cases and to lobby for harsher punishment for repeat and first time offenses DUI offenses are now recognized as serious and punished as such by almost all courts The judges in most courts know their actions will be known if they aren’t severe enough on offenders This is what is needed when it comes to animal abuse and cruelty, especially for severe and intentional abuse.
We now know through study that serial killers start with animal abuse and torture graduating to killing humans and torturing their victims like the animals they started with as children or young adults We need to make animal abuse something children and young adults view as completely unacceptable like drunk driving; something they will report, even if it’s a friend or should they observe it or hear a fellow bragging about it We NEED to observe the trials of those accused of animal abuse crimes and make sure they receive as harsh a sentence as possible for this type of crime and are not let off easily for convenience sake Let the courts know they are being held accountable
There should be an informative file of those convicted available to animal rescue groups should there be future offences by these abusers.
There are situations when the abuser is “underage” and we are unable to observe court These are the people who start young and it becomes part of their lifestyle Often they are repeaters, and their records are not available This is something that needs a fix
Enforcement of animal cruelty and abuse laws starts with law enforcement, but the only way to discourage the intentional abuse of animals lies with the punish-
ment and the judges who sentence perpetrators of the abuse
We are not big fans of simply writing or rewriting legislation Often the laws are already in place to punish crimes and to solve the problem Just writing more laws to replace old laws which have not been implemented or properly enforced is just a waste of time We should look closely at the existing laws to see if they are the problem or if it is simply a lack of will on the part of the courts or prosecutors or even the law enforcement
There are three chances for abusers to avoid major consequences for acts of abuse once
caught. First is a potential for law enforcement to downplay the abuse or fail to refer for prosecution, second the prosecutor may not wish to spend time on prosecution or plea bargain down to something which will not be as embarrassing as cruelty or abuse of the animal The third is the court may not take the crime seriously as it should, handing down small penalties or suggesting lower charges than should be given and allowing a way out of the most serious charges.
Do we need more laws? Absolutely not. We have a plethora We NEED them enforced and punishment served quickly Catch them as early as possible in life, punish them, and then they may take it seriously
We must make sure our elected and public employees take seriously animal cruelty and abuse What can you do to help? Call, email or write to voice your feelings of support for enforcement of animal cruelty and abuse laws

It’s a rather common scenario People live in the house that’s been their home for years the place where they’ve raised their children and made countless memories But then something happens. They lose a spouse, there’s a decline in their health, or upkeep of the home just gets to be too much and it’s time to make a change, downsize, and relocate.
Martha Minion found herself in that position Her husband had passed away and the sizeable home they shared in Tampa, Florida, was way more than she and her dog Peaches needed She sold her house, sold her car and at the encouragement of her daughter who lives in Fountain Hills, Martha and Peaches made the move to Fountain View Village
“It was important to me to find a place that not only would simply ‘allow’ dogs, but would embrace them,” says Martha "And the staff here at Fountain View Village are so kind to both of us. It’s a very loving atmosphere.”
Martha explained that making the move to smaller living quarters has been very good for her relationship with Peaches, a three-year-old, very outgoing “Malti-Poo” (Maltese and French Poodle mix) “Our house in Florida was quite big and I wouldn’t see Peaches for hours I’d be in one area of the house and she’d be chasing her tail in another Now we ’ re almost always together, we spend more time together, she always knows where I am, and it’s made us much closer We've really bonded ”
The move has been deemed a social success for both Martha and Peaches.
“We were rather housebound in Florida and people weren’t around that much. Now we ’ re around people all the time and we both love it.”
maybe someone she already knows but she can pretend to forget she knows, so she can start all over with her exuberant greeting
Peaches enjoys daily walks with her mom, and on days when a dog walker comes, she joyously shares the trek with her best (canine) friend, Wally. He lives upstairs.
It's one thing when you ’ re by yourself and need to make those physical and lifestyle changes, but markedly different when you have a dog whose welfare and happiness must be considered as well.
While Martha is busy with her numerous group activities (knitting, cards, painting, etc ), Peaches, one of seven canine who call Fountain View Village home, has established herself quite favorably with many residents; several of which carry doggy treats for dispensing when they see her When Martha puts Peaches’ leash on her and opens the door to the corridor, Peaches looks to the left, then to the right scanning the hallway in hopes there’ll be a person to greet. Maybe someone she’s never met before. Or
There’s a palpable, sentimental air as Martha recounts several of the recent changes in her life. That is until she gets to where she is today. Then her face lights up, she shares a gentle, genuine smile and says “But I have Peaches And together we ’ re here And we ’ re so happy We’re both so very happy Being here is a very good thing ”
When you share your home with an animal, you have to be prepared to put up with a certain amount of dirt and chaos that’s part of the fun of being a pet parent But just because you have a dog doesn’t mean you have to settle for a home that’s chewed up, dug into, or dirtied In fact, with a little creativity and some thought about your pet’s comfort and safety, you can have a home that not only showcases your love for your dog but your decorating smarts as well
One of the biggest fashion statements in your home is your furniture, but keeping furniture beautiful in a home with a dog can be a challenge Start by eliminating any chewing behaviors before they start with a firm direction and a good supply of chew toys If you enjoy doggy cuddles on the sofa, you can still keep it from becoming a dirty, ragged mess by choosing a fabric that can stand up to wear and be easily spot-cleaned Avoid plush fabrics that will serve as a magnet
To reduce the appearance of pet hair on your furniture or carpeting, select a color that matches your dog Seriously
Be consistent in your training to let your dog know that “digging” on the furniture is strictly verboten That goes for chewing, too
Accidents happen Keep a supply of paper towels or rags and a reliable stain remover handy, perhaps stashed in a table drawer or in an attractive fabric box or covered basket on a shelf
Coordinate your dog’s bed with your furniture with a removable pet cover in a great fabric
If your dog is aging and has difficulty getting up on the furniture, place an attractive footstool near his favorite couch or chair to give him a boost A great decorative piece will give your room a boost as well
By Joyce Becker Leefor dog hair and look for heavy-duty denim or canvas, or a good microfiber that will repel dirt, stains, and liquids One name to look for is Crypton (see sidebar), a virtually indestructible fabric that comes in whimsical patterns and gorgeous colors and is specially designed for stylish dogs and their owners
Of course leather is a practical covering for dog-centric sofas, but choose the best top-grain leather you can afford, dyed through to help mask scratches. And remember, even the toughest material can be punctured and scratched by canine claws One solution is to add a slipcover in a great color or pattern that will add punch to your everyday décor while protecting your furniture Even a single colorful throw on your dog’s favorite spot will cushion the claw and catch the dirt. Either is easily whisked away when you have company Extend the “ cover up ” into your bedroom with a pet-friendly duvet protecting your quilt or bedspread
Crypton is a practically indestructible fabric originally created for industrial and corporate applications. At the company website, www.cr ypton.com, you’ll find not only fabric, but a variety of attractive pet products, from pet beds to throws (called “throvers”) to mess mats
According to Randy Rubin, Chairman of Cr ypton Fabric, the fabrics are designed to not only last through years of dogs and kids but to accent your décor She says, “Because we ’ re in the home furnishings business with our performance fabrics, we know how people are decorating their homes. The pet products we create, while incredibly durable and protective, are ver y on trend with color, design, and fashion. Our philosophy is to let the pet bed and the ‘throver’ become decorative objects instead of just being ugly, utilitarian, ordinar y-looking pet products that stick out ”
To that end, Cr ypton has partnered with renowned dog photographer and artist William Wegman to create a delightfully doggy, yet fashion-for ward, line of pet accessories
Cr ypton products can be purchased online or found in over 3,000 furniture and fabric stores around the world, including Potter y Barn
A home with a dog needs flooring that will stand up to the punishment of claws and roughhousing. Tough, easy-to-clean hard surfaces such as tile, laminate and hardwood are popular choices, but these materials do have their negatives: all run the risk of scratches, chips and gouges; woods and laminates risk warping if subjected to standing water If you choose wood, consider bamboo and cork both tough, sustainable materials that stand up well to claws. Another solution might be an engineered floor, such as Hardwoof from Nydree Flooring (see sidebar), which offers the beauty of real wood toughened up for dogs
If carpeting is your decorating choice, know that while it is warm and elegant, it can be a nightmare where pets are concerned. To minimize headaches select a flat-weave that won’t get caught on claws and pull or unravel, and be prepared to vacuum often You should also invest in a good spot cleaner and carpet shampooer One great alternative is removable carpet tiles, such as those by Flor (www.flor.com), which come in a variety of colors, patterns and finishes Maintenance couldn’t be easier a stained square can be simply taken out and replaced
durable wood flooring for high-traffic commercial products and is proud to extend its exper tise into the area of home flooring with Hardwoof, a layered wood flooring product designed just for dog owners. With a wood surface infused with a tough acr ylic, Hardwoof is 300% harder than traditional wood floors The wood is then topped with a special urethane called Pedestrian 2 0, creating a practically indestructible finish
Company owner Jason Brubaker saw the need for a dog-centric product: “A lot of folks want real wood flooring but they’re afraid of how it will perform with their dogs,” he says. “Our product was developed specifically to stand up to the abuse of dogs, which allows people to use real wood with their pets ” He adds that the company works with homeowners, contractors, and designers for a custom look that will stand up to your pet
To reduce sliding accidents by exuberant pets, make slippery floors safer with attractive accent carpets or throw rugs, securely anchored by furniture or set on a non-skid pad
Avoid those basted chews that leave stains on carpeting. Opt instead for clean chew toys and edible treats
Even sand can scratch and pit floors, so clean paws after every outdoor trip Keep cleanup materials such as pop-up cleaning wipes near the entrance door
Cr ypton’s “Throver” blanket gives pooch a spot to call home anywhere - in the home, the car, hotel, or anywhere you want to protect. Lightweight, soft, stain, liquid and odor resistant, Throvers are so stylish, you may decide to borrow one for your next picnic, tailgate, beach day or just to curl up in Available exclusively at cr ypton com
by artist William Wegman does just that You’d never know this soft and super cool chair throw and and pillow are extra durable, stain, moisture and odor resistant The company has a performance pedigree: They’ve been a leader in fabrics for hotels, spas and restaurants and health care for decades, and now have developed new technologies for home and pet use Available exclusively at cr ypton com
Making design for dogs as stylish and chic as that of humans is standard practice for performance fabric technology innovator Cr ypton Their latest dog bed, pillow and “Throver” blanket collection designed The luxur y of having a white linen sofa needn’t be reser ved for the pet-less. Cr ypton’s Performance Ever yday Linen is offered on all of the upholstered furniture offered by Potter y Barn Stains, spills and odors are no match for this indoor performance textile For more: potter ybarn comBy incorporating your dog’s needs, you can add architectural interest and decorative savvy while maintaining a comfortable environment for your pet. For example, consider the natural instinct of dogs to find a cave-like area where they can feel safe and secure You can make such a cozy spot into a decorating statement by opening the front of a window seat to create a stylish (and comfortable) space underneath Make a cozy den beneath your kitchen planning desk, giving your pup a comforting place to adore you while you cook Ditto under your office desk. (My dog enjoys the occasional bare foot massage under my desk while I’m working )
Add a touch of fun doggy decor near your entrance with an interesting grouping of decorative hooks for leashes or doggydesigner clothes. If you have a spacious entryway, add a cute storage cube or bench for your pet’s outdoor toys and clothes (It can do double-duty as a place to sit and put on or take off boots ) Finally, consider the ultimate luxury: a dog bathing area (either outside or your pup ’ s own little “bathroom” complete with a spray shower A good site may be by the back door or inside the laundry room or garage
With a little creative thought, your home can shine with a love that says “ a dog with a very savvy owner lives here ”
To a dog, the next best to being to being outdoors is comfy, sunny spot to curl up and look outdoors. The stylish pet owners in this home have outfitted their custom window seats with cushions upholstered in Cr ypton Home Fabric. Soft, richly textured and offered in fashion colors and patterns, it is indistinguishable from luxur y upholster y except that Cr ypton high tech performance technology, incorporated at the molecular level, will keep this seat looking new for years to come, without worr y of stains, spills or odor It is offered through design showrooms and fine fabric and furniture retailers nationwide More: cr ypton com
Rethink that delicate silk wallpaper and opt instead for a washable paint in eggshell, satin or semi-gloss the shinier the finish, the easier to clean
Keep your window treatments simple and easy to clean or dust
Place breakables out of reach of swooshing tails Set them on shelves or tall furniture, or display behind glass doors
Keep dishes of candy or nuts well out of reach to avoid poisoning your pet
When selecting coffee or side tables, consider the height in relation to your pet, and choose rounded edges to avoid bumps and injuries
Use storage as a decorating element: keep treats and grooming items in cute ceramic jars, toys and chewies in cheery print fabric baskets
Set a bright washable rug under water and food dishes to sop up messes.
Have a “safe area ” inside for when your dog can’t run around outside An empty spare room or long hallway works great for playing fetch or “hunting” without fear of breaking things
Have dog beds made up of the same upholstery fabric you select for your furniture, or pick bed colors to coordinate
Have a pet door? Why not add a touch of whimsy with fun trim painted a cheery (coordinating or contrasting) color?

While Saia’s main products are designed for dogs, she contends that they are pure enough for humans “We use no soy, no wheat, no dairy, no sugar, no salt, no preservatives, making it pure enough for dogs to share with their humans ” She adds that bone broth can be used as a tea by adding spices or as a stock as a base for other foods Current items include kibble toppers and organic treats, such as truffles and cakes; all are made from a bone broth base
While Saia still enjoys designing couture clothing for pups, she sees her food business as gaining in importance and is excited about the future, saying, “I’m still in the experimental stage of the very high gourmet market in the East ” Products are available online

If you choose Scottsdale-area artists Lisa LaTourette, Fiona Purdy, or Bonnie Schweihs for your work, they will want to get acquainted with the subject ––be it your faithful companion, your mother’s pure-bred decorative shedding device, or even a long-gone childhood companion Each artist has her own preference for learning about their next painting’s subject
P u r d y o f f e r s f re e , i n - d e p t h consultations over the phone, via email, and even on Skype “There i s n o o b l i ga t i o n t o c o m m i s s i o n me after your consultation ”
Bonnie Schweihs says, “I work f ro m y o u r f a vo r i t e p h o t o s a n d prefer to meet your pet and take my own photos as well ”
By Zach WoodMany pet portraits are created in remembrance given as surprise gifts. If the artist is not able to meet the animal in person, just collect whatever images you can find–– Facebook is a great place to start.
“The more photos I have the better I can capture the personality," says Schweihs Most artists also request close-ups, particularly of the face, as that aids in capturing personality.
Medieval and Victorian portrait-makers would work closely with their patrons, ensuring that the likeness was developing along desired lines Contemporary dog-artists are also willing to coordinate their efforts, by sharing work-in-progress photos and other digital communication.
Lisa LaTourette offers another marvel of the digital world She can create gallery-quality, ink-jet giclee prints of the finished products. “Many people order giclees so they can keep the original portrait and gift a reproduction to a family member or friend.”
As with any custom gift, some planning is required. “Since I work in oil, drying time factors into the time it takes me to complete a commission, as well as how many commissions are in process when you place your order; an average is two weeks once I begin the portrait,” says Schweihs. “Holiday gifts, such as Christmas, should be ordered several months in advance.”
Another option for gifting is offered by LaTourette: “If we don't think we can meet a deadline, a gift certificate will allow your recipient to actually participate in the process. It can be quite fun and exciting.”
No matter the occasion, from gifting to decorating to memorializing, a professional portrait of your beloved canine is a unique and satisfying choice.
Canine care is all-inclusive at Zusia’s (pronounced “zoo-shahs”) That ’ s a Polish name and it means “Suzy ” as in Suzanne Paterson, owner Grooming, daycare, overnight service and a Su“Paw ”Market are paramount features of the Zusia’s experience Patrons (two- and four-leg ged) enjoy the friendly, personal ser vice consistently delivered by Suzanne and her husband Dana
Zusia’s takes grooming very seriously “We pride ourselves in taking the time to do a good, quality groom with attention to detail and thorough completion of all steps of the process, ” says Suzanne. “We proudly advertise that we are not the ‘one-hour turn around, high-volume chop shop,’ but the gentle, thorough groomer where safety and quality come first ” Grooming can range from a simple nail trim, bath and brush (bath/brush/blow dry/nails/trim face/feet and sani), full groom (everything included in bath and brush plus haircut) or the works where the client can add a myriad of upgrades and add-ons such as tooth brushing, specialty shampoos/conditioners, extra deshedding (called the “undertaker ”) and anal gland expression Pricing varies based on breed, size, coat condition, length of coat and behavior of dog. Pickup and delivery is available
A dog can’t help but have a good time at Zusia’s Doggie Daycare There’s plenty of activity indoors and out. Movies are played in the big-dog room, snacks are served midday, and there is fresh water and comfy beds available for rest at all times “Special care is taken of our guests while they are with us during the day. We make sure all dogs are
getting along and we pride ourselves on our safety record,” says Suzanne In the summer months, two, 85-gallon, bone-shaped pools and a smaller paw-shaped pool are available in the 3,300 square foot natural desert, fenced-in backyard for dogs to cool off in Dogs spend as much time as possible in the backyard (six at a time) when the temperature is appropriate. Dogs are moved around to different areas of the facility during the day to keep it interesting for them Don’t care to have your dog in with other doggie guests? No problem Zusia’s offers private areas to accommodate those needs. Daycare time can be purchased down to the half hour or up to a full day Prepaid packages are available for frequent attendees providing a break in pricing for half or full day stays and pickup and delivery is available
“Combination Care” is an overnight service that combines daycare service during the day and pet-sitting at night (done by Suzanne and Dana, both bonded and insured). Suzanne explains, “We transport our overnight guests to and from their homes for daycare at our facility during the day and then back home at night to eat dinner, relax and sleep in their own home A night visit is included to check-in, let pups out to potty, have a bedtime snack and more TLC.” On Sundays and holidays when Zusia’s isn’t open, they provide up to four, one-hour visits “Dogs love it and ‘get the routine’ usually within a day or so. Clients often claim their pet is ‘normal’ when they arrive home, not traumatized or sick from an off-site kennel experience We believe it is this touching back with ‘home base’ for the dogs that is the key benefit to our service.”
The Su“Paw ”Market came about as a result of clients wanting a fine pet food store with a greater selection of high-end products and to have the more necessary items available like food, treats, chews, toys, shampoos, collars and leashes “We carry over 25 high-end, healthy brands for dogs and cats and a large variety of treats ” Suzanne is always trying to bring in new, appealing and often fun items to keep it interesting “We offer free delivery with purchase and also extend the ‘5/50’ program where clients can buy five bags of the same size pet food (mix and match brands) and get 50 percent off the sixth bag. See our list of brands in our ad in this issue.”
Zusia’s also offers canine Pet First Aid and CPR classes every six to eight weeks. Call for next class schedule

Your dog can get the canine equivalent of the flu, and although it ’ s not the same as the one you get, it can leave him feeling just as under the weather Fortunately, it ’ s not very common in Arizona, and you can take steps to reduce your dog ’ s risk
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), canine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease characterized by cough, runny nose and fever It’s usually mild roughly 20 percent of infected dogs exhibit no symptoms but at its worst, canine influenza can result in severe pneumonia and even death (The AVMA sets the mortality rate at less than 10 percent )
“It resembles kennel cough,” says Dr Bridget Stewart, Medical Director at Animal Clinic Del Rancho in Scottsdale, adding that unlike the flu you experience, it ’ s not seasonal, meaning your dog can get canine influenza year round. It is also not transmissible from dogs to humans
Unfortunately, most dogs exposed to canine influenza will contract the disease since it is so new. The more common of the two canine influenza strains spread from horses to dogs in 2004, while the less common strain spread from birds to dogs in 2007 Dr Stewart says both strains can be either mild or severe in nature and affect dogs of all breeds equally; although, like any other virus, canine influenza is more likely to take a greater toll on young and elderly dogs
Because the disease is spread primarily through coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated objects (like food bowls and leashes), your dog ’ s lifestyle plays a more importan in his likelihood of contracting canine influenza than
other factor, according to Dr Stewart Dogs that spend a lot of time around other dogs at kennels, dog daycare facilities, boarding facilities and dog parks are more at risk
One of the easiest ways to reduce the likelihood that your dog will get canine influenza is to keep him up to date on his regular vaccines, especially Bordetella, since dogs with weakened immune systems from other illnesses are more likely to contract and spread it
If your dog regularly spends time at the dog park or in group settings, you may want to have your dog vaccinated against canine influenza, Dr Stewart says The vaccine doesn’t prevent the virus, but it does minimize its symptoms and has no real side effects. While the incidence of canine influenza in Arizona isn't exceptionally high, its frequency could increase at any time, especially with so many winter visitors bringing dogs from high risk areas like Chicago
If you suspect your dog may have canine influenza, schedule an appointment to have them checked out by a veterinarian.
“Any time your dog is acting abnormal, not wanting to eat, not as excited to go on walks, that ’ s a good time to take them to the vet,” says Dr Laura Olsen, an associate veterinarian who also works at Animal Clinic Del Rancho
Treatment for milder cases is largely supportive in nature a veterinarian will confirm the dog is hydrated and suggest ways to keep him comfortable until he recovers, usually in two to three weeks, according to the AVMA If the symptoms were to worsen i ith hospitalization may be necessary the dog, keep his nasal passages nd, hopefully, avoid the onset of eumonia

Dogfella: How an Abandoned Dog Named Bruno Turned This Mobster’s Life Around by James Guiliani (with Charlie Stella)
©2015 • Da Capo Press • $24.99 / $31.50 Canada • 239 pages
Many times, you’ve made your dog an offer he can’t refuse
A d for that, he’s sworn his loyalty forever. Whatever u ask, he does; he’s your enforcer, your protector, ur good little fella And, as in the new book ogfella by James Guiliani (with Charlie Stella), e always backs up the family or most of his life, James Guiliani barely gave anmals any thought.
Growing up in Queens, New York, the fourth of five boys, he thought of mayhem instead: he was the wild child, the one who gave his parents grief, the boy punished at Catholic school on a regular basis As a teen, he joined a gang. As an adult, he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and became a Gotti family employee
No, Guiliani barely tolerated animals; in fact, when he fell in love with Lena, “a nice Italian hottie” who happened to have a lot of pets, he ignored the cats and put the Pug out of the bedroom Guiliani didn’t sleep with the fishes and he definitely didn’t sleep with dogs, either.
Lena kept promising him that there’d come a day when he’d be an animal lover, but he didn’t believe it Even though they were starting a business for pet lovers a dog boutique he didn’t believe it…until the day he met Bruno.
Lena saw the seven pound dog first; it was tied with nautical rope to a parking meter in front of a veterinarian’s office. At her insistence, Guiliani ran to check it out and found a desperately ill, abused Shih Tzu The dog’s condition angered Guiliani; that the vet had ignored the pup inflamed him Once the pooch he named Bruno was stable, Guiliani told Lena, “…let’s go get my dog.” That was the first day of Guiliani’s permanent sobriety
Although Bruno didn’t live long and Guiliani was devastated over that–the dog’s presence and unconditional love uncovered a soft side to the tough guy When Lena handed him Gizmo, the dog who came after Bruno, Guiliani says that it was instant: “I became an animal advocate…I became a true Dogfella ”
Can’t get enough books about animals? Then you’ll love this: take everything you enjoy about mobster movies, add a few collars (in every sense of the word), and badda-bing, you’ve got Dogfella
With attitude-times-ten, a short fuse for humanity, and a love of animals that surprised even him, author James Guiliani (with Ch at may make readers wince between chuckles: Guilian s when telling stories about living by his fists. He’slence he did to humans and violence he’s witnes h of which I rather came to expect; and, while it was o the story. You, of course, shouldn’t be surprised at n these pages
But what can you say about a former jailbird with s, except that you’ll want to read more about him? d you’ll never fuhggedaboutit
Do Unto Animals by Tracey Stewart, illustrated by Lisel Ashlock
©2015 • Artisan Books • $19 95 / $26 95 Canada • 200 pages
hat makes your pet happy?
Throw a toy and find out. Going for a run, eaking a snack, sitting quietly with a warm anket and firm scratch, even watching TV an put a smile on Scruffy’s face; because ’s all about being with you But if you still need ideas, Do Unto Animals by Tracey Stewart has them for you.
If it’s possible, Tracey Stewart loved animals before she was even born pictures exist of her heavily-pregnant mother with family pets Animals always surrounded Stewart; and when she was a child, she wondered if she could make a living through her love of them. After a few life-detours including different jobs and men, other than the one she’s married to now she does
A dog was Stewart’s first love. He was a rescue bully-breed; but she says she’s not sure who rescued who, in this situation As she put it, a dog has always been “my four-footed soother, my crutch my confidant, my best friend ”
“If guardian angels really exist, mine don’t have wings. They have wagging tails, soft pink bellies, and terrible breath ”
Although allergic, Stewart has loved a cat or four. She can’t live with them comfortably she’s tried! so instead, her children act as champions of cats needing homes And that’s a good way to help animals; if you can’t have one, virtually adopt one.
Just because an animal doesn’t sleep in your house doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do for it Your backyard is full of what Stewart calls “The Landscaping Team, Pest Control Team, and Cleanup Crew.” And if you live on or near a farm, she says you should visit a barn often Cows and pigs are no dummies, and there’s a lot to learn on the back (or front) of a horse.
Other things you can do for animals: learn animal massage, visit a shelter and adopt a mutt Don’t believe everything you’re told about pit bulls or black cats. Remember that bugs and worms are friends. Know how to help an injured animal And this year, change a tradition: your family’s holiday menu doesn’t have to have a turkey on it.
It’s a good thing animals can’t buy books We should all be glad they can’t read, either; because if they could, they’d want to go live with author Tracey Stewart. But here’s the thing: there rea side Do Unto Animals it’s just all framed differently already know how to pet a dog well We’re aware of that bees are dying off, and that livestock have person wart reminds us of these things in a shoulder-bumpi way and besides, it’s hard not to be thoroughly smi makes up dog breeds a “White-Bibbed Snuggler,” i
For animal lovers, Do Unto Animals i maybe even twice. It might teach you something; an hat? This book about making contented critters will m
Charley, our rescue pup, and Nick, our son, are an unlikely pair due to Charley’s size and her inability, or should I say desire, to hunt. Yet, the two formed a bond that until Nick said his final good-bye to Charley, did the bond truly unfold
On Sunday, May 8th, our son Nick began his long awaited journey to earn his place as a United States Marine He would be gone for a minimum of 13 weeks (barring no injury), with no communication with his family or friends except for old-fashioned written letters
After Nick left, I gathered all of his shoes that sat by the door and took them up to his room Charley sat up when she saw me and looked around, obviously looking for her buddy The day came to an end and Charley lay quietly in her bed The following morning, I called out for her as I did every morning, but she did not respond. Usually she comes running because she knows she has a small window of opportunity to play. As I walked towards her, she kept her head bowed as if to tell me she doesn’t have the energy or desire to get up I looked into her eyes and all I saw looking back at me was sadness I sat with her for a while and then it dawned on me, there was no shoe in her bed; I had taken all she had left of her brother.
I ran upstairs, grabbed one of Nick’s shoes and a shirt from the hamper and put the items in her bed. Charley stood up, walked around in a circle and then plopped herself down resting her head on his shoe with his shirt tucked up close
When I took her brother’s shoes away, I also broke a routine that she and Nick had established when he first brought her home from the shelter Every night when Nick would come home, he would call out to Charley, and the two of them would go outside to hang out for a bit When they came back into the house, they would wrestle one last time, he would give her a treat and then head upstairs. Once she heard his door close, she would go into the utility room, grab his shoe and take it to bed with her Surprisingly, even as a puppy she never chewed on the shoe; she would simply put it in her bed and, rest her head on it and fall asleep.
Nick graduated in August and came home on a 10-day leave. Charley came flying around the house when she heard her brothers’ truck pull into the driveway She never left Nick’s side while he was home, and there was no denying she was in her happy place
When Nick’s leave came to an end, he gave Charley two shoes and his favorite t-shirt There is sadness in her eyes again, but I believe this time she understands that her brother will be back for her.
