The Wag magazine an informative, entertaining read about dogs & their companions

W

hile this letter is traditionally a communique of what’s ahead in this issue, I’m deviating from the norm to share my insight on adopting an extremely fearful, timid rescue (of which I understand there’s currently an abundance of at the nation’s overly crowded shelters) that may have “issues.”

We first met Skippy, a two-year-old Terrier mix, at an adoption event and within minutes, knew he was “the one.” We weren’t overly concerned about his extremely timid behavior when the first thing he did was try to hide by wedging himself behind the gas pedal in the car. He had bounced between foster families and hopeful forever homes so many times that we understood why he would be so afraid.

It didn’t take long for Skippy to bond with our other dog, Cloe. What heightened our concern, however, was his fear of dog toys (the fact that he had no idea what to do with them), the remote control, cell phones, Christmas tree, soda cans, car keys, people, places, and basically . . . everything. Although he did, at a snail’s pace, exhibit signs of trust toward us, his gripping fear of the world was heartbreaking.

When Cloe passed away, the few positive strides Skippy made became lost in his palpable grief. So, we started over. We showered him with love, assurance, and most importantly, gave him the time he needed to trust and feel safe at his pace.

And it worked. Skippy has become more confident. He loves to meet people (mostly women) and we now enjoy a minimum of five, well-worn dog toys and stuffed “babies” strewn throughout every room in our house. But while he no longer runs away when you reach for the remote, the sound of ice crackling in a glass or the cracking of a hard-boiled egg on the side of a dish will still send him bounding for shelter.

A number of Skippy’s “issues” have resolved and some have evolved into “isms” that are not only entertaining, but also reflect his endearing character. At one time, it saddened us thinking about how we missed out on Skippy’s early days as a pup. Now we focus on how far he’s come and the joy he exudes with every new experience he’s willing to face.

They say there is no love like that bestowed from a rescue. And I revel in that every time Skippy jumps on my chest, places a paw on each shoulder, and presses the side of his face as hard as he can into the side of my neck, giving me a loving hug that speaks volumes and warms my heart. A priceless reward for simply giving this four-legged creature the patience, love, and time he needed to come into his own.

I often think of all the dogs like Skippy who due to their unfortunate past, exhibit so much fear and apprehension that they are often overlooked for adoption. My hope is that by sharing our story, potential adopters will afford those animals the time, patience, and love they need to overcome their fears and thrive as the loving companions they truly are. Please, just give rescue dogs like Skippy a chance. The rewards are priceless.

his cover story smacks of serendipity, as a former law enforcement officer, dispatcher, EMT, and daughter of a firefighter is united with an intuitive Dalmatian rescue that thrives on serving first responders (police, fire, medical and dispatch).

Kate Klasen was looking for a canine assistant for her business H.E.L.P. (Human & Animal Emergency Lifeline Preparedness) in teaching emergency preparedness, including pet CPR and first aid. Little did she know that a trek to Save a Gal with Save a Spot—two organizations working together to rescue Dalmatians located in Turlock, California —would result in not only gaining a teaching companion and best friend, but also an opportunity to provide a muchneeded service to area first responders.

When Klasen met Bishop a year ago, he was just over a year old and 54 pounds. “He jumped right into the car and into the kennel,” she said. “I brought

him home to meet Tiny Tim, his threeand-a-half pound Shih Tzu mix brother, and it was kind of weird. From the minute Bishop walked in, it was uneventful.

The two dogs get along just great.”

Knowing Bishop would play a significant role in working with and educating first responders, The Fetch Foundation (TFF) sponsored Bishop by paying for his initial training. TFF donates Fido Bags, which are filled with essential lifesaving tools for pets, to area fire departments. They also offer their Homeless 2 Hero program, taking in rescues to train 6

as therapy/service dogs, as well as instruction and support for service handlers.

“About three weeks after I got him, Bishop started initial therapy dog training and then service dog training. He excelled at both. It was extremely easy for him because he picks things up so quickly and is easy to train,” said Klasen.

Bishop went on to pass his AKC Good Citizen, is certified by both the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and First Responder Therapy Dogs, and is service trained for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Klasen is certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)—an intervention process for helping first responders involved in traumatic or critical situations. As a result, she and Bishop are one of the few, if not the only duo in the state that participates in a debriefing of first responders to assist in the recovery from the stress of a tragic or catastrophic situation or event.

During a debriefing, the responder verbally recounts the event while Bishop performs as a therapy dog. During the interaction, the responder’s stress level is lowered because of an increase of serotonin, a bodily chemical that nerve cells produce to increase mood and decrease anxiety. Bishop will also let it be known if he determines PTSD is present.

“It wasn’t until I got Bishop and started training with him for PTSD that

made me realize that I have been affected by it,” said Klasen. As a first responder, you think you have dealt with stuff. But he made me realize some of my quirks are from PTSD, and as a result, I’ve been able to help myself.

This handsome guy is true to his breed as a working dog. During the day, Dalmatians were used to guard horses and carriages, allowing fire fighters to go off and do their jobs. The only thing Bishop likes less than rain, is unemployment. He much prefers to be making rounds at fire or police stations, dispatch centers, or the medical examiner’s office—alleviating stress and helping people cope.

“He gets bored when he’s not working,” said Klasen. “So, around the house and upon command, he keeps busy fetching the phone, keys, and even opening cabinets. He is extremely intuitive. In fact, we were in a building for the first time, and I was going to take him outside to potty. I started walking to where I thought there would be an exit but there wasn’t, and he pulled me to where a door actually was (and that he had never seen).”

There’s a great deal of intelligence and insightful empathy behind those beautiful blue eyes.

How very wonderful, and appropriate, that the worlds of Klasen and Bishop have collided to provide help for those who are helping others. W

Our mission and focus is to reunite lost pets with their families, and to rescue and humanely trap at-risk dogs and injured cats who are stray, lost, or living on their own and require specialized skill and equipment to bring them to safety. Juno | 6 years | Labrador/Black Mouth Cur Mix. Juno, a shy guy who was found on the streets of Phoenix, has been working on his confidence! He prefers a quiet environment and would enjoy the company of another dog buddy. He’s shy and started out nervous, but now walks confidently on a leash. He’s still a little uncomfortable in public, but we know that he will thrive with a peaceful family who prefers to hang out at home cuddled on the couch with a favorite Netflix show.

Penny | 5 years | Vizsla. Originally a “Texas gal,” Penny was passed around from rescue to foster, then lost and trapped in the West Valley. Ask us for videos—she loves dogs of all sizes! She’s highly agile and is expert at playing chase and in warmer weather, enjoys a splash pool. She would benefit from a loving “life guide” who can help teach her confidence—with time and patience she can become a fantastic on-leash walking or hiking partner.

Bailey | 1.5 years | Domestic Medium Hair kitty.

Bailey loves sitting on your lap, but she also has a sassy side and will let you know when she’s had her fill. A perfect adopter will be someone who embraces her affectionate moments while respecting her independent spirit. Her eyes light up with excitement as soon as the toys come out!

She pounces, chases, and leaps with boundless enthusiasm, proving that play is the true key to her heart. Bailey must go to an indoor-only home.

Forrest | 3 years | Carolina Dog mix. Forrest was rescued by a HARTT volunteer while in California, but he’s grown to love the desert life! This dog has springs for legs—you should see him “bounce” when he runs and plays—such a big, goofy guy!

He is a pro when meeting other dogs and should go to a home with at least one canine buddy of a similar size. Because he’s big and active, a home with children 12+ is required. He is quite shy and takes time to warm up to people, and he’s a little more nervous around men. Like all HARTT dogs, he will need a home with a secure fenced yard.

JJ | 4 years | Pug/Chihuahua mix. Cute as a button, JJ is a quirky charmer with a big heart. This compact little dude is not a cuddler; laps just aren’t his thing! But he gets along with all dogs of ALL Sizes. JJ has come a long way while with us, but we are perhaps the first people who ever showed him the warmth of a kind hand or told him he was a “good boy.” JJ is ready to continue this journey of learning how kind people can be, with a family who will allow him to be his independent self and mainly thrive as part of an existing dog pack of loved pups.

Daisy | 9 years | Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier Mix. This senior gal is longing for a place to call home. It’s heartbreaking that her family didn’t come looking for her. She’s in excellent health and runs and plays with ease. She loves basking in the sun, going for walks and car rides, and might just be your perfect companion. She’s shown a preference for being the star of the show and is looking for a home where she can be the only furry friend in the house. She would also thrive in a home with no children so that she can enjoy her moments of tranquility and relaxation.

Dog Park Etiquette SOME P’s AND Q’s FOR PLAY AT THE PARK

T

o your dog, a trip to the off-leash dog park means one thing: FREEDOM! However, it’s far from free dom for you. The dog park is a social setting where you must follow the prescribed rules and make sure that your dog follows them as well. To that end, we’ve come up with a little guide to help you understand your responsibilities in allowing your dog (and you) a positive, fun, social outing.

✮ Don’t bring food or treats. Most dog parks frown on that for a reason: to avoid fights and chaos. Trust me, you will regret it when you have a dozen dogs trying to climb you for a goodie. ✮ Do bring water. Some parks have drinking stations, but some don’t.

There are lots of fancy choices for toting water, but a simple reusable bottle is a practical, earth-friendly choice. If you dog hasn’t learned to drink from a bottle, carry a lightweight collapsible bowl. Offer the beverage often. ✮ Know your dog’s physical limits. Be aware of signs of exhaustion on hot days. If your dog appears to be suffering, leave or find a shady spot to rest and have some water. On cooler days, make sure your dog is adequately warm and limit your outdoor time. Short-haired dogs in particular can benefit from a sweater or a coat.

Watch for shivering and lethargy, or check by feeling his ears and body—if they’re cold, that’s enough outside.

Your dog’s responsibilities: ✮ To have a wonderful time socializing, exercising, and burning off excess energy, resulting in a great nap at home with happy dreams about having fun and running free. W

Your responsibilities: ✮ Train your dog. An off-leash park can be a free-for-all. Be sure your pet will come when called and leave a situation on command—even when he’s intent on rushing to the furthest end of the park to meet a new friend. Try a dog whistle or have a special call. ✮ I.D.s. It’s for the dog’s safety—tags and microchip. While most dog parks are fenced, some dogs have been known to jump over and take off, and sometimes a collar can be lost. ✮ Pick up the doo doo. This is nonnegotiable. Everywhere. If you are new to the park, be sure to bring your own bags, just in case there are none there. USE them. Watch your dog to make sure you don’t miss any deposits. ✮ Take the first visit slow. Your dog might be overwhelmed at the first time to an off-leash park—all those

butts to sniff, all that space to explore! Walk around on leash at first to get acclimated. Always keep track of your dog. While it’s nice to socialize with other pet owners, be sure to have one eye on your pet, not your cell phone or favorite novel, and have a sense of every situation. This is your dog’s time. ✮ Understand the nature of a dog.

Know the difference between play and aggression. If you see aggressive dogs or those playing too rough, steer yours in another direction. Conversely, if your dog is aggressive with other dogs, either use a muzzle and leash or find another exercise option.

Allow your dog to sniff others, but at the first signs of aggression, move on and away. Understand your dog’s tolerance for people. This is especially important if there are children in the park who will naturally want to pet your dog, and NEVER allow a child to put her face near your dog’s face.

Speaking of children, if you must bring small children with you to the park, be sure to keep an eye on them and be ready to keep them away from over-enthusiastic dogs. One more thing: if your female is in heat, DON’T BRING HER TO THE PARK. ✮ Be proactive. Make sure your pet has protection against ticks and fleas, and keep up with all immunizations.

Piglet, the Deaf and Blind Dog A PIGLET LOOKALIKE INSPIRES CHILDREN TO TREAT HUMANS AND ANIMALS WITH RESPECT

hen Melissa Shapiro, DVM, saved Piglet, a deaf and blind Dachshund Chihuahua mix, from a hoarding situation in Georgia, she assumed he would be easy to care for because he was only eight weeks old.

Not so much Instead, Piglet screamed all the time and was terribly upset. She had to find a way to communicate with the tiny pink powerhouse. “If your dog is deaf, you can sign to him. If he is blind, you can speak to him,” she said. “Because Piglet is deaf and blind, I had to touch him.” Shapiro taught the wiggly pink bundle to sit by repeatedly holding food above his nose and tapping him on the chest. She even taught the one-and-a-half-pound puppy to go to bed by gently squeezing either side of his ribs.

Eventually, the playful pint-sized pooch started snuggling in his foster dad’s arms, taking strolls down the street, and making house calls with his veterinarian foster mom. Shapiro’s gentle senior dog, Suzie, even stepped up to comfort Piglet as he waited for his forever home.

Wait no more Shapiro and her husband, Warren, had a ‘two dogs max’ rule. But somehow, that

fell by the wayside. With a pack of six rescued dogs already, they did not plan to adopt Piglet. So in hopes of finding him a home, Melissa created a Facebook page called “Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy.” She posted adorable videos and photos of Piglet mapping his way around the house and backyard and snuggling with her other rescue pups. After two months, however, she caved to the power of the cutest piglet lookalike and apologized to her husband, promising that Piglet would have a meaningful, productive life.

The Piglet Mindset Program Shapiro started a non-profit called Piglet International Inc. and began selling Piglet swag. That caught the eye of publishing giant The Dodo, whose video catapulted Piglet into social media stardom.

A third-grade teacher, Tricia Fregeau, from Massachusetts, wrote to Shapiro stating, “I cannot wait to show this video of Piglet to my students.” Shapiro offered to make a personal video for Mrs. Fregeau’s class. “I ended up doing a PowerPoint because I didn't know how to cut and paste videos at that time,” she said.

and touch to live a happy life despite his disabilities. The third graders became smitten with him and then . . . the Piglet Mindset Educational Program was born—teaching acceptance, inclusion, empathy, and kindness to all people and animals.

As part of the educational program, students simulate what it is like being blind by closing their eyes or being blindfolded, then touching stickers with different textures. They reach into individual bags, each containing different ingredients, and use their senses to determine what each ingredient is. They also do writing activities, illustrate posters, and raise funds for disabled animals.

At the end of the year, Shapiro and Piglet surprised Mrs. Fregeau’s class

with an in-person visit. “Walking into that room was one of the most emotional moments of my whole life,” Shapiro said. “One of the most tear-jerking experiences is walking into a classroom where kids are wearing Piglet Mindset headbands colored with words like ‘strong’ and ‘brave’ on them.” Piglet was also paraded around the school where students held up posters that said, “I’m your number one fan.” One student in Rhode Island even brought the Piglet Mindset Program to her soccer team. It taught them how to be positive while facing challenges as a crew.

TRAVELING THE WORLD THROUGH PET SITTING COUPLE DELIGHTS IN THEIR PASSIONS—PETS AND TRAVEL

emi-retired husband and wife John Hersey and Bev Belury live part time in Fountain Hills, Arizona. The rest of the year, they travel the world.

Since 2016, this international pet sitting duo has visited over a dozen countries and thirty-plus cities. After losing their sweet sixteen-year-old Pug, Kai, they decided to travel by looking after other people’s pets, from dogs and cats to alpacas, horses, birds, and other exotic animals. Through TrustedHousesitters™, their preferred pet-sitting portal, they connect with others worldwide and take house and pet-sitting assignments of at least 30 days.

Bev shares, “We really, really love traveling. This gives us a chance to give people peace of mind for their travel. We love their pet like we do our own.”

Before a pet-sitting job, Bev and John gather detailed information about the pet’s day-to-day schedule, such as their standard time for eating, medicine, and playtime. The couple always arrives a day early when the owner is still there and watches how the pet is cared for.

From Here to Heaven PREPARING FOR THE PASSAGE OF YOUR PET

s a veterinarian with over 36 years of experience caring for pet patients and my own pets, decisions regarding end-of-life have become no easier. We desperately strive to care for pets the best we can every day, and yet we need to euthanize with compassion and professionalism those same patients whom we have come to love.

We are expected to be intellectual decision-makers and empathetic grief counselors. All too often, guidance is provided to pet parents in a rushed and cold environment.

This is a difficult topic to think about, but just like your own end-of-life care, it is easier to discuss and plan when the need is not imminent. Identifying your options well in advance can help alleviate any regret and decrease stress at this heartbreaking time for you and your pet.

Most of us do not want our pets to suffer, however, sometimes an illness

can be uncomfortable but temporary. As your pet’s caretaker, you will need to get informed and decide if your dog or cat needs to hang on and push through to get back to a comfortable life or . . . if hope is gone. Sharing with others may confuse you, but you could receive some valuable insight from other pet lovers who have had similar experiences. Don’t hesitate to seek this type of guidance in addition to your veterinarian.

When you feel is time to let your pet go, you will realize that this process means different things to different people. Some feel that all pets should be humanely euthanized to prevent suffering. But does it prevent suffering? “Playing God” and using a procedure that is illegal in the human medical world can add a whole new element of stress for all who participate.

At this time, your mindset is critically important. Do you have doubts? Are you scared? Your furry companion can sense all your emotions. I know emotions are difficult to control. You may be terribly upset, sad, or depending on the circumstances, angry. But this is a time for you to put your pet first and step up and be strong. Sadly, some pet parents do not have the strength to be present when their pet is euthanized and choose to leave the room. This is, however, when your pet needs to feel your love the most.

Holding your pet’s paw and watching the light leave his or her eyes is extremely difficult. But knowing you were there, sharing this deep love and connection, will give you future peace. You will feel sad, but you will likely feel relief that the struggle has passed.

If you are having doubts or if your pet still has a spark or fight left, or is agitated and pulling away, then perhaps there is still hope. But it could also be your pet wants “to go” on his or her own time.

Providing comfort and hospice care until your pet passes naturally is an option.

Many pet parents feel comfortable with this choice. If you choose this option, you must provide care. You may need to syringe food into your pet’s mouth, keep your pet hydrated by injecting fluids under the skin, and provide analgesic and sedating herbals or pain medication.

It is vital for you to be there for your pet as he or she transitions out of this life.

You must be able to be calm.

If your pet passes naturally at home, you will need to be aware of a cremation or burial service in your area. Your veterinarian is an excellent resource for this. There are also home euthanasia services. You might choose to research those in advance and be sure you have the connections readily available. You should inquire about methods, tranquilization, location in your home to perform the procedure, who should be present like other pets or children, and the aftercare options and pricing.

Most euthanasia services also provide a variety of memorials such as clay paw prints, urns, or other keepsakes.

Dogs with a Purpose SERVICE, THERAPY, EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

ogs can provide a variety of services that physically and emotionally support us. However, a service dog is not the same as a therapy dog, and an emotional support dog differs from both. Here is a breakdown of their roles, what training is required, and the laws that apply.

Service dogs There are two types of service dogs: those that assist people with physical impairments, and psychiatric service dogs that help those with mental impairments.

The first type of service dog might guide someone with vision impairments on city streets, alert someone with hearing impairments of sounds such as a knock on the door, or stand over a person during a seizure.

On the other hand, a psychiatric service dog might scan a room to provide security to someone going through post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Therapy dogs Therapy dogs are trained to provide comfort and affection to people in certain situations and places. Additionally, he might visit patients in a hospital, mental health institution, or hospice.

Because therapy dogs are not trained to perform tasks for a specific individual, they are not considered service dogs under the ADA and do not have the same legal rights to enter public places or fly on airplanes. Often, they work through non-profit organizations such

The key difference between service dogs and therapy or emotional support dogs is that service dogs are trained to perform a task (or tasks) for a specific individual in need, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

They are protected under the ADA and able to access any public space, including airplanes.

While many service dogs wear vests to identify them, the ADA does not require them to have identification or

as the Companion Animal Association of Arizona.

Depending on the organization, therapy dogs may need to be certified and registered. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends certification through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, which provides training and insurance.

Even without certification, therapy dogs should have a calm temperament, be comfortable in new environments, listen to commands, and love people, according to the AKC. Therapy dogs are considered working dogs.

Emotional support dogs Like therapy dogs, emotional support dogs provide comfort and affection.

However, these dogs—which fall under the umbrella of emotional support animals (ESAs)—offer that comfort and affection to their owner who may suffer from anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, or other mental health conditions.

While emotional support dogs are not required to have any specialized training or certification, their owner technically must receive a prescription for this service from a mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. Even with the prescription, emotional support dogs are not psychiatric service dogs because they are not trained to perform a specific, complex task for their owner; they only provide comfort and affection. Snuggling at signs of stress or anxiety does not count as one of those tasks.

As a result, emotional support dogs do not have the same legal rights under the ADA as service dogs. They may not be permitted in some public places and, as of January 2021, airlines are no longer required to allow them to fly with their owners. However, the Fair Housing Act requires “reasonable accommodations” for emotional support dogs, even in rental homes and apartments that don’t allow pets.

Laws for service, therapy, and emotional support animals can vary depending on the state or city, so while there are national standards, local communities can build on those requirements. Consult with your local government, disability group, or nonprofit to learn more about current laws and restrictions in your area. You can also reach out to airlines for their individual policies regarding emotional support dogs. W

Best Behaviors Around Service Dogs

inding your manners For fervent dog lovers, it’s almost impossible not to engage in conversation with, or pet, any dog they encounter—service dog or not.

Even if you make eye contact and interpret their gaze as “How ’bout a good scratch or a pet on the top of my head?”

—you must refrain. Your zealous behavior could become a distraction.

Whether or not it’s obvious to you, a service dog is doing a job—performing what could be a life-saving task—the very job the animal has been trained to do. And while service dogs are trained to remain focused and stay on point, someone standing in front of them making puppy chat or waving a treat can be a test of any pup’s fortitude.

Let sleeping dogs lie. Just because a pooch is curled up, appearing to be in slumber, does not mean he is off the clock and you’re free to approach. Even

if he has punched out, he is still honedin on the needs of his handler and again, you become a distraction.

While the dog and handler are a team, if you have something to say or ask, address the person. Be mindful not to be intrusive. Imagine if every time you leave your house, every place you go, you would be stopped by people asking the same questions over and over. For example, about your shoes—“Why do you wear that style?” “How much did they cost?” “What is the brand?” “Where did you get them?” It wouldn’t take long for that to get old. So, you can imagine what it is like for a person with a service dog. They have service dogs for a variety of reasons and they may not want to discuss their needs. Nor are they obligated to share that information with strangers.

Teaching children When educating young folks about how to behave around pets (and it is paramount to do so beginning at a very young age), make sure to include how children should conduct themselves around service dogs.

If you meet a service dog on the sidewalk or path, position your pal away from the working dog and allow the duo ample space. Never walk side-by-side with a dog in service and always give them the right of way.

A lone service dog Encountering a service dog that isn’t with a person can be alarming and likely means the dog is looking for help. If you’re in this situation, follow the dog to his person and, if necessary, call 911.

In conclusion Service dogs are trained professionals.

They deserve respect. The next time you see one, allow yourself to be reminded of what amazing creatures canines are and the many roles they play in our world— saving lives, keeping people safe, and providing a host of services so those with disabilities can enjoy fuller lives. W

Etiquette for your canine companion If you’re out and about with your bud, chances are at some point you will encounter a service dog—at which point your BFF may be thinking, “Hey, look at this guy. He’s got a cool jacket and is just hangin’ out. Let’s go say ‘hi’.” Not a good idea. Always speak to the handler first, and again, that dog is on the job.

Saved by a Soldier’s Best Friend

ogs are special. At times, they can know something is wrong with you even before the doctor does.

Ziggy is my Australian Labradoodle service dog and he watches over me like a hawk. The two of us were trained as a team for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) through Soldier’s Best Friend, an Arizona non-profit organization based in Peoria with two trainers located in Prescott. They work with combat veterans with PTSD or TBI (traumatic brain injuries).

One of Ziggy’s tasks and many cues is to apply tactile stimulation, a maneuver where a dog applies deep pressure to a particular part of the body where the dog senses something isn’t right—thus making the person aware of a potential problem.

I actually knew something was wrong even before I went to the VA for a colonoscopy. It wasn’t that I felt bad, but it was something Ziggy had called to my attention. He had been doing tactile stimulation on me for several weeks before my scheduled test and made it obvious that he knew there was a problem. After the colonoscopy, my doctor said that something didn’t look right. A biopsy was sent to pathology to confirm his observation. In the meantime, the doctor wanted me to have some blood work done. I already knew I had cancer just because of the way Ziggy was acting. It was no surprise.

After surgery and eight days in the hospital, it was time to come home. Ziggy was so excited. He wouldn’t leave me alone.

He wanted to sleep on the floor next to our bed rather than in my office where he usually slept.

Within a few days, Ziggy resumed the tactile stimulation.

“Oh no, what now?” I asked myself. When I was in the hospital, there was concern for some type of cardiac irregularity. The VA referred me to Cardiac Care in Prescott Valley where I underwent a number of tests and went home with a heart monitor.

Within days I was called to return to the Cardiac Clinic where I was told I needed a pacemaker—stat.

While Ziggy didn’t accompany me to the hospital, my wife, Elaine, was there by my side from early morning to late at night. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful wife. To me, it was a bit humbling to be taken care of. But Elaine was amazing.

Fast forward to today. Now that I’m armed with a pacemaker and free of colon cancer, I’m ready to help others.
