A

hhhh. fall is here. It always amazes me how our dog’s behavior is indicative of the change of season. About the same time every year, Skippy’s exuberant passion for the pool begins to wane, longer walks are in demand, and he’s perfectly content to curl up and watch six hours of football on television with his dad—all in sync with the arrival of autumn.

Meanwhile, we’ve been busy filling this issue with a variety of informative and entertaining content that we hope will bring you joy. See Page 16 to learn about Save-A-Vet, an organization that rescues former four-legged soldiers. There is a heartwarming recount of a rescue’s transformation from roaming the streets to becoming a young woman’s loving companion and service dog (Page 12), a new, delightful twist to the Touching Tail as this one is narrated by a dog (Page 26), plus information on dog bites, Valley fever, and those pesky lumps and bumps (Pages 14, 20, 24)—and there’s even more.

hat is Beau on the left smiling at the photographer’s exhausting efforts. And Zoe is on the right— trying to set a good example for her notso-obedient brother. While these two young “kids” are not siblings, they are extremely close, always busy, and do just about everything together—good or bad.

What one does not think of, the other one does.

When thinking about getting a dog, Mr. Manno (Gasper) spoke about his desire to have a Cane Corso—an Italian breed of Mastiff that is large, protective, and, well . . . a lot of canine. Mrs. Manno (Maria), however, wanted a smaller pooch that would fit in their bed to join them in slumber. That pretty much ruled out the Cane Corso as the couple turned their interest toward a much smaller breed. And why two dogs rather than one? “So they can keep each other company,” Gasper explained.

Beau is a 10-month-old Bichon Frise, and nine-month-old Zoe is a BichonFrench Poodle mix. Even though they are both puppies and share a common breed, in many ways they are different as night and day.

Zoe is smart, curious, attentive, and courageous. Beau, on the other hand, is rather risky and on the sneaky side. He will do something he should not do then quickly dash away. His current challenge is mastering the art of stair climbing.

Always concerned for his best friend, Beau begins to cry and runs for help when Zoe goes up the stairs but is “stuck” because she is not yet able to make her way down.

Zoe tends to rule the roost at the

Manno household. Sometimes she puts her paw on Beau’s treat so he cannot have it. She does this while she devours her goodie, then proceeds to gobble up his. If Beau shows interest in a particular toy, Zoe snatches it on the sly and hides it. She has also been known to claim the entire couch, forbidding Beau to enjoy any part. Beau does his best to get even, however, by chasing Zoe around the house with her tail in his mouth. He will even drag her around the floor by her tail.

Despite their individual comedic behavior, the fun-loving duo will occasionally partner-up in their ventures.

Like when Maria sits back in her chair with her feet up and cries out, “Time for Mama’s pedicure.” The team comes flying from wherever they are in the house, positioning themselves at Maria’s feet, and begin licking her toes.

If you mention “canine” to dog lovers, their appreciation for the animals is usually quite apparent. If you mention the Manno dogs to Gasper or Maria, you will be met with an irrepressible reaction and stories of the abundant love and joy these two little pups have brought into their lives. W

Timber RESCUED HUSKY MIX TURNED SERVICE DOG

I

t has been quite a staggering transformation for this four-legged four-yearold going from rescued pup to service canine. It all began earlier this year when the dog was found wandering the streets of Fountain Hills, which jumpstarted his journey to becoming a first-rate service dog, touching the lives of many.

When Derek and Jamee Bohlen found the dog, now named Timber, they brought him to their home and waited to see if someone would claim him. It was immediately apparent that he was a special boy with a sweet temperament and had a gentle way with their children.

When Timber’s owner could not be located, The Bohlens took him to a local rescue—Rescue Pals.

Margherita Arvantes, a volunteer at Rescue Pals, then contacted Kelli Collins, Founder and Master Trainer at Havoc K9 Training Center, requesting an assessment to see if Timber would be a suitable candidate to join her existing canine brood. Upon meeting Timber, one of the older pups made it readily apparent that a new brother was not something she would welcome.

Collins, however, was instantly taken in by Timber’s relaxed, kind disposition.

And while she does not typically train Siberian Huskies for service dogs, it became glaringly apparent that Timber might just be that special canine she had been searching for to provide service to a very special young lady—Reanna Bailey, a resident of Los Altos, California.

Fifteen years ago, when Bailey was fiveyears old, Collins trained a German Shepherd to provide her assistance.

Knowing another dog would soon be needed, Collins had been searching for “just the right one” for over a year.

It was love at first sight during Bailey and Timber’s first meeting. On one of their earlier outings, Bailey painted a stunning picture of Timber at the “Paint Your Pet” party at Mountain Grace Arts, an entertainment service offering 12

mobile paint parties. Timber’s painting was later purchased by Arvantes who initially connected Collins with Timber, creating a sweet memento for her efforts.

When meeting Timber, you cannot help but notice his striking eyes, size, and good looks. He is approximately 100 pounds and considerably smaller than an Alaskan Malamute, but bigger than your average Siberian Husky. This “handsome boy” has beautiful blue eyes and the looks of a Siberian husky, but his lineage tells a unique story. Embark dna, a canine genetics testing company, found that Timber is 40.1% Siberian Husky, 16.2% Alaskan Malamute, 14.6% German Shepherd, and a mix of other dog breeds.

The DNA results also revealed Timber has a “very exotic female heritage” closely associated with wolves, jackals, and foxes. But do not let his fierce heritage fool you. He much prefers being a “snuggle bug” and playing the part of a cozy rug while he warms Bailey’s feet.

You will also find Timber rocking stylish boots and bandanas—a signature look he nails.

This hard-working husky mix strikes an outstanding work-life balance, as Collins and Bailey shared that Timber is quite relaxed and naps frequently.

However, the minute it is time to work, he is ready for action.

Under Collins’ guidance, Timber underwent approximately six months of extensive obedience and environmental training to ensure he is unbothered by noise and movement, while remaining aware of his surroundings to assist Bailey as needed. One of his unique accomplished tasks is learning to pull a special fitted cart so he can walk to and from the grocery store with his handler with food in tow. Timber has already visited many bustling locations during his training, including Topgolf, Bass Pro, Starbucks, the farmer’s market, Build-A-Bear, movie theaters, the airport, a casino, and

many restaurants. This well-traveled pup is ready to take the world by storm— if he does not affectionately steal your pillow first.

When asked what she loves most about her new dog, Bailey responded, “I have a million favorite things!”

When Dogs Bite A RESULT OF THEIR BEHAVIORS AND . . . SOMETIMES OURS

hen talking about people being bitten by dogs, specific breeds frequently come to mind.

It is important to remember, however, that any breed can, and does, bite. Even the smallest, fluffiest, cutest, and most loving pooches can wound if provoked.

Remember, a dog’s breed does not determine whether it is aggressive or violent. Its background and behavior do.

Why it happens Dogs have many reasons for biting, but it is usually based on a reaction. “If your dog is really sore, for example, and you don’t realize it and you start touching it over and over again, eventually it is going to say, ‘Hey, back off.’ And, if you don’t listen, it’s going to bite you,” said Dr. Dennis Wormald, DVM, founder of ABADOG, the first dog behavior technology for general practitioner veterinarians.

Dogs may also bite when a person or another animal invades their territory, guarding something valuable they do not want to share. Some dogs protect their family members and will bite if they believe they are being threatened, while others have a high prey drive and will chase, grab, or hunt any moving object.

“There is always a lot of fear in every single serious dog bite,” Wormald said.

“Aggressive dogs are like barbarians with battle rage. They are scared but brave, so they attack. They’re the most vicious when they feel like their own life is on the line.”

Watch for warnings Dogs rarely bite without warning. “If I tell you that I'm going to attack you in Italian, but you speak English, I’ve given you a warning, but you don’t understand it,” Wormald said. Dogs use body language and sounds to express their feelings.

If you are a victim If a dog attacks you, get the name and contact information of the person that had custody of the animal when the incident occurred. Also, obtain the same information from any witnesses. Find out if the dog has been inoculated for rabies.

“Aggressive dogs are suffering from mental health problems,” Dr. Wormald says. “They’re not naughty, vicious, evil things. They’re just scared and dealing with their emotions the only way they know how.”

Avoid dogs that display these behaviors: • Ears perked and tail completely frozen.

• Yawning, lip licking, or raised fur on the back or neck. This may indicate a feeling of being unsettled or uneasy.

• Growling, snarling, or snapping.

• Staring. If you can see the white of a dog’s eyes, it’s likely to bite.

• Tail wagging. A wagging tail does not always mean a dog is happy. If a dog’s tail is wagging high and slow, it is a signal of fear and unhappiness.

If the dog is loose and unattended, take a photo of the animal if possible.

Cover the wound and apply pressure.

Then wash it with mild soap and warm water for five to ten minutes. Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream and cover with a sterile bandage. Watch for signs of infection. Seek medical emergency help immediately if there are signs of infection like redness, swelling, or an increase in pain or fever.

Human behaviors Teach children, beginning early on, how to approach and behave around a dog.

A person of any age should practice the following behaviors and precautions around unfamiliar dogs—regardless of breed.

Always ask permission to greet someone else’s dog. If the owner’s response is that they would rather you not approach the pet, then honor their request. Just because you have a dog or have had good luck with troubled pets in the past does not mean you should ignore the owner’s request.

Speak in a slow and calm voice. Turn your body slightly to the side and do not

make direct eye contact with the dog.

Extend your hand in a fist-down position and let the animal come to you and sniff. Then slowly pet the dog’s side, neck, back or chest. Do not reach over the dog’s head as that can be frightening.

You will soon be able to tell if your gestures are being well received.

Use caution • Never get between a dog and its family members.

• Do not pet dogs that are nursing puppies, sleeping, playing with toys, or eating.

• Keep your distance from dogs that are not on leashes or that are behind fences.

• Do not run away, scream, or make frantic gestures around a dog that you do not know.

• Keep still and use a calm voice.

• Do not turn your back on the dog or allow it to stand behind you.

• Use caution with a dog that is sick or injured. Find the owner or call animal control for help.

• Never intentionally startle, tease, hit or poke a dog.

• Do not break up a dog fight with your bare hands. Squirt the dogs with a water hose or toss a blanket on top of them.

As a dog owner, do not force your dog to interact with people. If your pet is not a “people dog,” respect that and protect everyone—others, you, and your dog, from undue stress and a potentially bad situation. SAVE-A-VET Remembering “the other” forgotten soldier

or four years, Department of State (DOS) Agent Paddy worked as an Explosive Ordnance Division Technician at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. When Danny Scheurer, U.S. Marine Corps Crewman/U.S. Army Marksman and the rest of his unit, including Paddy, went to clear a building, Paddy leaped from an SUV and dashed to the building’s entrance. “We tried to run,” Scheurer remembers. “But the guys in the back—because they didn’t have radio silence or a [military] dog—breached the building. And it blew up.”

Both Scheurer and Paddy were injured while serving their country. As a result, Scheurer was given a 70 percent disability rating. “I received VA medical care, options for schooling, paid training for employment, and multiple other perks for serving my country.” His comrade Paddy, however, a military working dog (MWD), was labeled unsuitable for typical retirement. Because of aggression due to his combat training, he was slated to be put down.

“How’s that for a soldier who serves?”

Danny said.

Dogs have been officially performing as four-legged soldiers in the U.S. military since World War I (1914–1918). Approximately 5,000 of them served in the Vietnam War and saved nearly 10,000 human lives. They also participated in the takedown of Taliban leader Osama bin Laden and ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

not aware that Paddy is a canine,” Scheuer said. “Most people’s reaction would be anger, concern or consternation regarding a veteran being denied retirement due to atypical retirement qualifications.”

That’s where Save-A-Vet in Lindenhurst, Illinois comes in. Scheurer started the nonprofit to rescue canines that aren’t adoptable because of their attack training, field experiences, or physical and mental injuries—including posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries that may cause dogs to barely blink or even eat.

Scheurer explains, “Unlike a lot of agencies, the DOS truly cares about their

Employees are randomly tested for drug use. “They [employees] must be able to pass a background check and either be employed or attending school full time with a minimum of a B average,” Scheurer said. “It’s not a free handout. You wake up at 6 a.m. and take care of your assigned dog. If it’s not being fed at 6 a.m., you’re fired.”

Save-A-Vet does not take dogs from civilians but from agencies only. They don’t have a normal shelter because they

retired from Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) because she started eating her own tail—likely a result of an allergy to the drugs she was working to sniff out.

Ornella’s sharp nose served our country’s borders for two years. Her handler, CBP Officer Shawn Johnson said, “She possessed those qualities and energies that make a successful drug detector dog a smuggler’s worst fear.” In 2014, Ornella suffered a fatal heart attack. “The veterinarians tried CPR, but she wasn’t able to pull through,” Scheurer said. “Although

Ornella has passed, we’re happy to have given her what I can only imagine have been the best two years of her life.”

Public donations and Made in America companies such as Basecamp and the Travel & Adventure Show aid in powering Save-A-Vet, which cost nearly $81,000 to run in 2018, even with seven unpaid, fulltime staffers. “When we announce that we need volunteers, we typically have a couple of hundred people show up,” Scheurer said. “We have volunteers all over the country.”

“With Save-A-Vet’s leadership, military canines became veterans after decades of being categorized as equipment,” said Randi Scheurer, Danny Scheurer’s mother.

Randi reflects on Nero, a former Navy bomb dog who had two discs in his back fused together and a golf ball-sized lump removed from his jaw. Firefighters, cops, and construction workers would drop by his house every morning to bring him bacon. “He was Danny’s constant companion until the end,” Randi said.

During Nero’s final days, Danny laid in the back of his van with Nero—wrapping his arms tightly around his beloved comrade and friend, making yet another forgotten soldier’s “golden years”— golden. PACC911’s Critical Care Program MEETING A CRITICAL NEED—SAVING LIVES

P

hoenix Animal Care Coalition’s (PACC911) Critical Care Program was started in 2012 to fulfill a most important need not addressed by any other organization. At that time, all animals at MCACC (Maricopa County Animal Care and Control) and ahs (Arizona Humane Society) who were sick or injured beyond the scope of “shelter medicine” to assist were euthanized. The shelters recognized that the care of these animals was too costly for smaller rescue organizations to absorb, and there were no programs to offset the expense.

PACC911’s Critical Care Program has changed this culture. By subsidizing the veterinary care needed, PACC’s partner-

ing rescues have been able to step up and start saving these precious lives.

Since the inception of the program, it is estimated that close to 10,000 animals will have been given that second chance at life by the end of 2023.

The Critical Care Program helps in a variety of ways. It serves the 130-plus rescue organizations that partner with PACC911, giving them the ability to save those animals on the lists to be euthanized at both MCACC and AHS. The program also allows for the rescues to take in sick or injured animals who are owner turn-ins, or strays that cannot be taken by MCACC or AHS due to overcrowded facilities and limited intake procedures. MCACC and AHS also

benefit from the program which incentivizes PACC partners to pull animals who otherwise would be euthanized. As a result, both shelters now avoid larger euthanasia numbers. The real benefactors, of course, are the animals who can now receive the veterinary care needed to survive.

TAKES A TOLL BUT NEW VACCINE OFFERS HOPE FOR PROTECTION

I

n Southern Arizona, a fungus called Coccidioides immitis lurks in the topsoil. It causes a condition called Valley fever (aka coccidioidomycosis).

When dirt is stirred by walking, high winds, or digging, Valley fever spores can become airborne and inhaled. Once C. immitis settles in a dog’s lungs, they reproduce within spherules—small, round cells the size of a strand of hair.

Then they burst, releasing hundreds of seed-like formations called endospores.

A 2020 report by the Arizona Department of Health Services states more than 94% of Valley fever cases were in Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal counties. The disease costs dog owners in Southern Arizona more than $60 million per year.

Risk factors According to Arizona University Health Sciences, puppies born in Maricopa and Pima counties have a 28% chance of getting Valley fever by age two. Four in 100 adult dogs become sick with the disease every year, and those that spend at least 80% of their time outside are about five times more likely to be infected. Dogs that roam more than an 20

Bull Terriers, Brittanys, Boxers, Dalmatians, English Pointers, Greyhounds, Vizslas, and Weimaraners are most often affected, according to a 2019 study in Medical Mycology, a medical journal published by Oxford University Press that researches human and animal fungal infections.

There is hope for those stricken canines, however, as the mortality rate is less than 10%.

Types of Valley fever In dogs, there are two types—primary pulmonary, and disseminated.

Primary Pulmonary According to a 2021 study, 80% of dogs get primary pulmonary Valley fever, which only affects the lungs, and can cause a honking, dry cough; fever; weight loss; a lack of appetite; and lethargy. As the disease progresses, pneumonia can develop. While clinical symptoms usually occur 21 days after infection, the fungus can stay dormant in a dog’s body for up to three years before any symptoms occur. Approximately 70% of dogs with primary pul-

monary Valley fever do not have any symptoms.

Disseminated “Valley fever can spread beyond the lungs. It can also affect the lymph nodes, bones, joints and skin, causing various symptoms like back or neck pain and skin abscesses,” said Alex Schechter, DVM, at Burrwood Veterinary in Royal Oak, Michigan. The disseminated strain can also infect the eye, causing painful inflammation and sometimes cloudiness. It may even cause unexpected heart failure in puppies and young adult dogs. In severe cases, the fungus attacks the brain and spinal cord which can result in seizures and brain swelling.

Valley Fever in Dogs

Treatment Dogs are usually treated with antifungal medications such as Fluconazole (Diflucan), Itraconazole (Sporanox) or Ketoconazole (Nizoral). “These medications all target the same pathway in the fungus to inhibit its growth in the dog,” says Lazhar Ichir, founder of Breeding Business, a global publication devoted to ethical dog breeding. Dogs with primary pulmonary Valley fever must be treated for 6–12 months but should begin to feel better within one to two weeks.

Side effects may occur with all medications for this malady. They include appetite loss, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Antifungal medications can also damage a dog’s liver, so occasional blood tests may be ordered to check liver enzymes.

Dogs with disseminated Valley fever are usually on antifungal medications for

12–18 months. If the fungus has invaded the dog’s brain, treatment for the rest of the dog’s life may be recommended.

Besides antifungal drugs, there may be a need for steroids for brain swelling, as well as anti-seizure medications.

Other recommendations and needs include Vitamin C to acidify the dog’s stomach and boost the immune system, a combination of a milk thistle extract and SAM-e to lower liver enzymes, a need to hand-feed moist, warm dog food, and in critical cases, appetite stimulants or a feeding tube.

Prevention Currently, there is no foolproof way to prevent Valley fever in dogs. Schechter recommends keeping your dog inside during rain and dust storms. Walk on the sidewalk instead of the grass when possible, redirect your pup’s behavior when he starts to dig, and cover your yard with grass, faux grass, wood chips or gravel.

Help on the horizon Dylan Balsz, CEO of Anivive, a pet pharmaceutical company located in California, is working with the University of

Arizona on a vaccine for the canine disease that contains a live, harmless strain of C. posadasii. Balsz and his team have used Valley fever shots and boosters on mice and dogs in clinical trials. Research has shown it protects dogs for around six months.

Balsz says veterinarians may have access to the vaccine by the end of 2023.

“The biggest barriers to getting the vaccine to market were finding funds for research in the early stages of development and now working through the regulatory process with the USDA for licensing,” said Dr. Lisa F. Shubitz, DVM, Valley Fever Center for Excellence at The University of Arizona. “I will be so glad to be able to prevent most Valley fever in dogs instead of treating it for months and years and watching dogs suffer from feeling bad for a long time from the disease or the medications.” W Cherese Cobb is a professional writer and photographer from Tennessee. In any case, make an appointment as soon as you note changes or if the lump persists over time.

Monitoring is key. Mark Jeon, DVM, who specializes in oncology at VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Center of Arizona, suggests shaving the affected area to make it easier to relocate and monitor. You may also want to consider outlining small lumps and those that wax and wane in size with a skin-safe marker to better track the changes.

Jeon says it’s important to consult your veterinarian if the lump remains for

Be prepared to share photos that show the lump’s appearance over time, and let your veterinarian know any other changes you’ve noticed, such as lost appetite or lethargy. Not all lumps and bumps are cancerous. They can be anything from lipomas, fatty lumps that are common in older and overweight dogs, to cysts and warts.

Sebaceous Cysts Basically a large pimple, these lumps develop from a clogged oil gland. They sometimes burst and emit a white, cottage cheese-like discharge. Benign and more of an annoyance than anything, sebaceous cysts can appear, burst, heal, and then reappear.

Mast Cell Tumors One of the most common malignant tumors in dogs, they vary in size and appearance.

They can spread rapidly and often appear as raised, elevated lumps.

Skin Tags Often found in senior dogs, these fleshy, stalk-like benign growths can appear anywhere on the body.

iscovering a lump or bump on your dog for the first time can be alarming. The good news is that often a lump can be as harmless as a fatty deposit. However, until you take your dog to the veterinarian, there’s no real way to determine whether that lump or bump is a cause for concern. Here’s what you need to know.

When you find a lump, your first step should be to note where it is, its size, its shape, and whether it seems to be bothering your dog. Jot down your observations and take photos from several different angles for comparison later.

Then, determine how urgent the situation appears to be. If the lump doesn’t seem to cause your dog discomfort or pain when touched, you can monitor it for changes.

However, if your dog seems to pay a lot of attention to the lump or reacts in pain when you touch it, make an appointment with your veterinarian. A lump that seems to grow in size over the course of several minutes may indicate an injury or allergic reaction that requires immediate attention, especially if it seems to be bothering your pet.

gered and observed the rickety farm truck make its way up the drive.

Bev got out of the vehicle and dragged herself toward the house. I was excited to see her and to give her my treasure. It was a peace offering as I had been a bit of a rascal the last couple of days.

With a startled glance, she spotted me. I bounced up and gleefully presented her with the leg of a muntjac.

She looked a little taken back by the bloody deer leg but as she called out my name, I knew she was happy, or maybe relieved, to see me.

We left the treasure in the snow as we joined Domino inside. The three of us headed to the cozy den, the cuddly couch, and crackling pot belly stove.

And there we stayed all night—me on the rug near the couch, Domino near the potbelly stove, and my caretaker, Bev, on the couch under a pile of quilts. W

t was just snow, a brisk wind, a crystal clear and flat black atmosphere dotted with flakes, and me . . . enjoying a late-night walk.

Thick with concern, I had been feeling tension all day. Our barn and office, adjacent to the sweet, vintage farmhouse that I call home, had been secured against the elements and closed earlier in the day.

The Beast from the East arrived.

I headed up the ridge overlooking the house, and felt snowflakes melt on my snout as I tried to capture the fluffy white stuff in my mouth. The snow was much deeper and fluffier up there. It’s fun to kick it up and watch it lingering in the air before either settling on the ground again or blowing away on a monstrous wave of wind.

Far in the distance, I heard a faint voice, a whistle, and a truck with its old headlights bouncing every which way.

Normally I would run to the cluster of noise and bounding brilliance but tonight, I had a goal. And I was almost there.

The snow was blinding as I leaned into the bellowing wind—finally reaching the peak. Scanning the ridge, I looked for the prize I had been yearning for all day. Then, there, protruding from the blanket of snow, was my treasure.

Excitement electrified my body as I dug it out to carry home.

Laden with my prize in tow, I no longer had the will or energy to check out the truck meandering along a slippery track. Slowly and carefully, I balanced my awkward trophy and started my return trek.

Almost there! Approaching the farmhouse, I heard Domino, an old, working Cocker barking from inside.
