Economic Opportunities Obstacles facing Black businesses in the UK
Black-owned businesses play a crucial role in the UK economy, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and community development.
According to a report published by OPEN, a London -based think tank that focuses on migration and diversity, businesses led by ethnic-minority entrepreneurs contribute at least £74 billion a year to the UK. Estimates by Lloyds banking group and MSDUK ( which commissioned the report), indicate that black owned businesses contribute around £25 billion to this figure.
A report by Minority Businesses Matter, sponsored by EY, also found that minority businesses make up a sixth of the 6 million businesses registered in the UK and employed nearly 3 million people in 2019–20. The report also found that 8 of the UK’s 23 tech unicorns private start-ups, were co-founded by minority entrepreneurs. One such example of a black owned unicorn is Marshmallow, an insurtech startup that recently reached a valuation of over £1.25 billion. Marshmallow, founded in 2017 by Oliver Kent-Braham, his twin brother Alexander, and David Goate, uses data to provide affordable auto insurance to customers who typically fall outside the traditional "good risk" profile, such as immigrants and expats (SHOPPE BLACK) (Black Enterprise).
Successful businesses provide innovation, employment, level up deprived areas, and contribute to national and local wealth. It stands therefore, that unleashing the potential of black business owners, and aspiring black business owners in the UK, is a benefit to all! When discussing black owned businesses in the UK I have come
across many articles that focus on the barriers, difficulties and inequalities that exist in comparison to white counterparts, and whilst it is impor-
tant to recognise these barriers, I find it more important to focus on the ways to tackle these issues, as well as navigate through them. Not only this, but also to highlight the immense opportunities that are available here.
The UK is the 6th largest economy in the world, and the black population in the UK is extremely entrepreneurial and innovative, just as much so as their Asian and white counterparts, yet British white owned SMEs are many times bigger/more profitable, so the key here is not about looking elsewhere for opportunity, stirring up entrepreneurship within the black community or encouraging innovation; It is about unleashing it’s potential!
In 2023 the GDP of the UK was a whopping £2.3 trillion! 60% of this, is made up of household consumption. This means there is around £1.5 trillion consumer spending taking place within

our economy and Black businesses can take a slice!
How do we do this?
Well, let’s take a look at the trends
From the above chart, we can see that sector with the highest rate of decline in turnover, is Arts, Entertainment and Recreation, but surprisingly “The largest sector represented by Black business owners was leisure (30%): encompassing hospitality, the arts, fashion and beauty” (Shari Leigh, Founder of
• Only 12% of Black business owners turn to banks when seeking advice and support.
• Black business owners and future entrepreneurs are far more likely to rely on their friends and family for support, Black entrepreneurs and business owners are seeking support and advice from friends (31%), family (26%) or turning to Black community groups or social media groups (29%) with only 12% approaching banks. However, the Black population in the UK, on average, has limited generational wealth (a
Black Business Network and member of the Black Business Advisory Committee ).
Black businesses also tend to focus more so in these areas, on servicing their own community. However, given our population size, this limits growth. These sectors are also more susceptible to inflationary pressures, something that over the last 2-3 years has seen record highs. The key, therefore, is to diversify to other sectors, and to service outside of our own community. Put into numbers, according to the ONS, "Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African” peoples, accounts for “2.5%” of the population which is around “1.5 million people.” In comparison "Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh" account for “9.3% (5.5 million) of the overall population.” Consequently, this limits growth.
The limiting nature of staying within our own community presents a segway into tackling one of the biggest barriers for Black owned businesses, Finance. According to Lloyds Banking Group:
and covert discrimination and bias, which can affect their ability to secure business opportunities, clients, and partnerships.
• Black business owners may have limited access to professional networks and mentorship opportunities, which are crucial for business development and growth.
• There is a lack of representation of Black entrepreneurs in media and industry leadership positions, which can limit role models and discourage aspiring Black business owners.
Structural Barriers
• Black-owned businesses often struggle to access mainstream markets and secure contracts with larger corporations or government entities.
• Many Black-owned businesses are in economically disadvantaged areas with lower foot traffic and purchasing power, which can limit their customer base.
• Limited access to essential business infrastructure, such as high-quality internet and transportation, can hinder operational efficiency and growth.
Lack of Support Programs
legacy of colonialism and slavery), using friends, family, and personal collateral for raising finance results in Black entrepreneurs only raising an average of £2,000 to support their businesses.
Other barriers are: Financial Obstacles
Access to Capital: Black entrepreneurs often face difficulties in securing loans and investments from traditional financial institutions due to systemic biases and a lack of collateral or credit history.
• When they do secure loans, Black business owners may be subject to higher interest rates compared to their white counterparts, making borrowing more expensive.
• There is a lack of targeted funding and grants specifically for Black-owned businesses, which limits their ability to start and grow.
Social and Cultural Barriers
• Black entrepreneurs often face overt
• Insufficient government programs and initiatives aimed at supporting Black-owned businesses can leave these entrepreneurs without the necessary resources and guidance.
• Black-owned businesses often face barriers in accessing public procurement opportunities due to a lack of transparency and targeted outreach efforts.
Wider Economic Barriers
• There may be gaps in business education and access to training programs that can equip Black entrepreneurs with the skills needed to successfully run and grow their businesses.
• Limited access to technology and digital literacy can prevent Black-owned businesses from fully leveraging online platforms and digital marketing strategies.

Wealth passed down through generations
Who are you?
I hold a BA Hons in Education with Sociology degree, a Masters in Education in Vocational Education and Training (VET) from the Institute of Education and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies.
I am currently employed in London with a local authority in the Children, Families and Education Department. I am currently secretary for The Jamaican Ex-Soldiers Association (JESA UK). V V B Bespoke is a culmination of many years being a creator in one form or another in a range of craftmanship such as gardening, knitting, and sewing. Sewing is an art form for which I have a phenomenal passion and I enjoy sharing my products at pop up markets.
How did you learn to sew?
My mother taught me how to sew initially via observation at approximately 15 years old. Mum was truly a professional craftswoman. She created head wraps/turbans, petticoats and made my dresses for my pivotal school plays. As a side note, I remembered being astonished when Mum completed an upholstery course at the age of 75 years and told me she was the youngest person in the class. This is an excellent example of Lifelong Learning. During my teenage years, I sewed my own clothes and sourced exquisite materials in London markets for head wraps with my friends. I used to love making pencil and box pleated skirts which were the fashion of the day. A key part of my sewing journey I enjoyed, was sewing for my

children. For me, sewing is the epitome of the transformation of a piece of fabric to the reality of a garment and it continues to give me a real sense of joy and accomplishment.
When
did you start your business and how has it progressed?
It is so amazing being an artisan creating V V B Bespoke and steadily progressing to the next level. My business was established in 2018 when I specialised in knitting socks and developed a knitting group whilst employed at Kent County Council. I knitted a pair of socks for my school friend Helen Harrigan’s husband birthday. Helen of Loblolly Ceramics was fascinated with my products and invited me to join WRC to sell Infinity Scarves online.
What are your products?
My primary focus is creating versatile Infinit Scarves and pride myself with inheriting the task of designing turbans, creating head wraps & scrunchies and developing makeup/project bags.
I receive many compliments whenever I wear an Infinity Scarf to work. I love the vibrant colours, style, and feel of the materials and it is awesome to wear an Infinity Scarf as part of my cultural heritage.
How does Infinity Scarves make your customers feel?
Customers are delighted whenever they purchase their Infinity Scarves, I feel exuberated with array of colours in African print. I certainly feel unique wearing my Infinity scarf because it is bespoke. I look great, it feels wonderful, and my infinity scarf keeps me warm.
What are V V B Bespoke Assets?
We have a wonderful vision to donate 5% for each Infinity Scarves purchased to a charity of our choice at the end of the year. Excellent quality products and good customer service.

A Multifaceted Entrepreneur
Millions may know Lisa Maffia as the First Lady of So Solid Crew, the award-winning UK garage and hiphop collective. However, beyond her music career, Lisa is a highly successful entrepreneur.
Growing up in Brixton, south London, she developed a strong business acumen early on. One of her first ventures was House of Maffia, an online hub for upcoming clothing designers, which she launched in 2007.
This platform aimed to showcase talented but underrepresented London-based designers, particularly those from the Black community. Unfortunately, when Lisa’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, she had to step away from the business.
Though her mother has since recovered, Lisa decided at the time not to continue with House of Maffia due to its emotional ties. However, inspired by a property developer friend, Lisa later rekindled her passion for business through interior design and re-
opened House of Maffia as an interior design company after successfully designing several homes.
During the pandemic, Lisa took the initiative and launched Lyrical UK, a business that began with providing personalized video messages from garage artists, to fans whose events were cancelled.
Teaming up with her business partner, Dan Jolly, they expanded the service to include merchandise, creating gift packages that offered both a personal shoutout and branded apparel.
Lisa attributes much of her business success to the lessons she learned growing up in Brixton, which she calls the "university of hustle."
She believes the challenges faced in south London taught her resilience and authenticity, skills crucial for navigating the corporate world. Another entrepreneurial endeavour is UC Booking, a booking agency she started using her extensive network of industry contacts.
Under the alias "Selina," she successfully booked artists, including the now-famous rapper Chipmunk. Lisa also ventured into the beverage industry with Maffia Rum. Unsure of her preferred alcoholic drink, she embarked on a journey to create her perfect rum blend.
After numerous trips to Jamaica and tasting sessions, she developed a unique blend of rum mixed with select spices. Maffia Rum, available online, is set to launch in major retailers soon. The rum can be purchased at www.MaffiaRum.com.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, Lisa advises continuous learning and networking. She emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge and attending networking events to gain practical insights and strategies for business success.
One of Lisa’s favourite Black-owned businesses is her daughter’s venture, Fluency Runner, a language-learning game app available on iOS and Google Play. She also admires Bryon Cole and Bianca Miller Cole for their success as a business couple.
Lisa Maffia’s journey from a musician, to a multifaceted entrepreneur showcases her resilience and adaptability. Her various businesses, from fashion and interior design, to booking and beverages, highlight her diverse talents and unwavering determination to succeed, to continue being an inspiration. •
QUEEN CHIC COSMETICS STORY
I’ve always been interested in mixing natural ingredients in my own cream for my skin to benefit from the best and most efficient vitamins. After studying cosmetics in France and working in different beauty and spa salons. My customers were pleased with how I treated them. They helped me to open my beauty Salon, which is called “QUEEN CHIC”. The happiness and glow of my clients along with my passion in skincare and cosmetics was my goal. I studied more about using herbs, fruits and natural ingredients to protect and vitalize skin.
When I arrived in the UK, I was looking for lightning cream for myself, as you know most black women used brightening cream. The desire for a lighter complexion is not a new phenomenon historically.
“It's deeply rooted in a history of slavery and colonialism, It's a response to hundreds of years of colonial indoctrination that has been passed down through socialization” Christopher Charles, Ph.D
I then decided to develop my cream further, so I made a formula rich in, organic and natural ingredient, Collagen, Glutathione, Niacinamide B3, Vitamin B5, C, E, Sepiwhit to lighten skin. Shea Butter Almond and Coconut oils to hydrate the skin. The face cream content SPF 30 protection against UV damage, without spending much money .
I started looking for how to get non-harmful raw ingredients which could results in a light and glowy skin. During the COVID, due to the lockdown, resulting in the closing of all the shops and stores, my friend asked me what product I was using for my skin to maintain a glowy and healthy look, as well as becoming lighter each time, which is my cream. My friend then asked me to give her some of my cream, after seeing the good result on her she ask me for more cream for her and her friends.
Now this cream is in the UK market, which I call Golden Queen. Because we ladies are Queen, we must take care of ourselves.
I feel concern about black skin decoration, skin burn, years of exposure to the harsh chemicals found in bleaching creams. So, Golden Queen cream is special made for black skin, Brighteners aid in reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, acne, stretch marks, sunburn, age spots, scars and more, revealing an even skin tone. Also, can help revitalize tired and dull skin resulting in a youthful, healthy glow. Gloden Queen leave the skin soft and moisturized, making it perfect for all skin types. This cream is described as brightening, so it should not leave the skin feeling greasy or heavy and is suitable for use under make-up. Use twice a day for quick results,it give natural glowing complexion, very safety for long-term use.
No Hydroquinone, No Paraben, Golden Queen is cream a gift for black skin made by a black lady.

Good Morning Angela

NOT KNOWING WHO WE ARE, YOU ARE WHO SOMEBODY SAYS YOU ARE
Iwill begin by saying let’s be grateful for life and what we have 1st. and not think or focus on what we do not have, as we are soul spirits . living a human existence. So anything we get after living to see another day is a bonus.
There is an old Jamaican saying, every bad mus have a good, so I will only speak positively.
Because as they say the devil is a liar and he only deals in negativity. I cannot speak for any ones journey but my own. But what I can say is , I truly believe we all have a gift purpose and reason for being here. It is up to each one of us to find out what that gift purpose and reason for being here is.
Because The Most High Creator of all things God ,
does not do anything without reason , and we are his biggest players in that reason and purpose. It is true when it is said what does not kill you makes you stronger.
It also unlocks the door to finding yourself purpose and reason for living this beautiful life we have been given as a divine gift from The Most High God I must also point out
Because it is what you do with what you make out of the business not necessarily what the business is. My fundamental point is to say it made me realize , it was one of the tools to unlock my purpose in life, to inspire my melanated brothers and sisters, and help them, make a difference in this world.
Also to leave a good legacy, as the saying goes, Do good and good will always follow you, which for me began in the UK to JAMAICA and has now taken me to AFRICA, where I feel my true fulfilment lies.
As for who I am, I am formely known as Anthony . L . Graham, but most people call me Anas, due to the fact I changed my faith from Christianity to Islam, although I now realize it is not about religious Ferver in either faith, The Most High God gives us all free will within ourselves to find out our true purpose and meaning for what our life path mission is. Currently live in JAMAICA since 2010, but fre quent back to the UK to do Sub-Contract Construc tion works, whilst also doing business, and running my Main
Commercial Business JELLYPEPPA
COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES LIMITED , which was established in the UK in 1995 as JELLY ENTERPRISES LIMITED, and re branded in 2011 after merging with it’s own Trademark JELLYPEPPA , and also being moved to JAMAICA, and now finally being moved to KENYA , AFRICA. JELLYPEPPA Enterprises Limited was Born out of my Construction business A.L.Graham Builders which began in 1982, it gave me the financies to add another Company and diversify what this Company does.
Lastly, my journey into Africa in terms of starting my Business there owes a huge thanks and gratitude to these people. My 2nd Co Director George Oyango, Co secretary Frank Juma, Adepu, all three whom are also Lawyers on behalf of the Company.
I would like to thank Innocent Mutiso, a legendary National Kenyan player for opening the door that lead me into Football coaching, and for connecting me with Imara Daima Football Club who my company sponsors and who I coach unofficially. I would like to also extend my thanks.

Award-Winning Local Childminder & Family Sessions Provider, Opens Her 1st Nursery In Bromley!
Teamara Adams registered Bonding School in October 2013, after writing plans during any lightbulb moments that she had, whilst working as an SEN Teaching Assistant. Communications with a range of children, constantly had her questioning her path, how she bonded with her family, what she felt was missing, and what she could do to make a difference for other families.
Her past led her to become passionate about raising her own talented, happy, educated, loving family, as well as being a devoted carer and educator to other children and families around her.
Bonding School has come a long way from its humble beginnings upstairs in her twin’s bedroom where she first piloted family sessions to groups of her friends. When Teamara first started out, her passion for encouraging families and children to bond together, through learning a range of different life skills, and encouragement from other parents, drove her to do intense research and quit her day job as an SEN Teaching Assistant.
Quitting her job did not come lightly, as she loved her job role, but as she was planning to build and operate Bonding Schools services during weekends and school holidays, her own childcare issues arose just after half-term, which happened to be the same halfterm in which Teamara gained funding for Bonding School.
She took this as a sign, and has been a Registered Childminder for 8 years, working alongside other passionate assistants including her partner, Gavin.
Whilst running Bonding School, they become oversubscribed and they decided to take a leap of faith to open their first nursery, Bonding School Nurseries.

ACE Entrepreneurs; For US by US
After dedicating 18 years to the market ing industry and eight years to run ning my own freelance consultancy, 2019 became the year that redefined my professional journey. I decided to shift my focus from working exclusively with a clientele of global corporate giants to championing diverse-owned businesses like my own.
My mission: to foster growth and allyship through a bespoke 'for us by us' model, aimed at accelerating investment funding that has stagnated at a mere 0.24% for over a decade.
ACE Entrepreneurs, launched in 2020, was created to support, launch, and scale underrepresented businesses. It is a free-to-join network of over 400 businesses, offering safe spaces to learn from marketing, business, and finance content hubs. Members have access to start-up funding, marketing services, and on-demand resources.
In May 2024, I launched ACE Fest, a diverse business
growth ecosystem, providing entrepreneurs with game-changing essentials for scaling their businesses. Working alongside strategic partner Dentsu and collaborating with Google, TikTok, Meta, and various legal, tax, and accounting firms, the event featured an investment pitch room and interactive workshops to tackle common business challenges with practical group-based solutions.
All startups can achieve their business goals with a solid concept that addresses a customer problem or need. My advice: always set goals, be strategic, review performance, adapt, and partner or collaborate with others to achieve faster business growth. Seeking support from relevant business communities like ACE equips entrepreneurs with the tools and structures for success. Above all, foster a positive mindset and believe in yourself first; then others will follow.

How to start to address these issues
• There are not enough, but there are still a number of initiatives out there that are directly tailored toward removing the barriers to finance for Black owned businesses and we should take advantage of them! HSBC sponsored last year’s Black Business Week and Black Business Show. Santander works with a network of women of colour in business and supports a black inclusion programme. NatWest has a racial equality taskforce and an ethnicity advisory council. Barclays has a black founders accelerator.
• Establish targeted grant programs and low-interest loans specifically for Black-owned businesses. This can help overcome barriers to accessing capital.
• Provide microfinance options for small Black-owned businesses, which often have more difficulty securing traditional bank loans.
• Create investment funds dedicated to supporting Black entrepreneurs, which
can provide the necessary capital for scaling operations.
• Incubators and Accelerators: Establish business incubators and accelerators that focus on Black-owned startups, providing mentorship, resources, and networking opportunities.
• Offer free or subsidized business training programs focusing on key areas such as financial management, marketing, and digital skills.
• Develop mentorship programs that connect Black entrepreneurs with experienced business leaders who can offer guidance and support.
• Implement and enforce supplier diversity programs in both the public and private sectors to ensure Black-owned businesses have opportunities to bid for and win contracts.
• Establish and support business networks and associations for Black entrepreneurs to facilitate networking, knowledge sharing, and collaboration.
• Create community hubs or co-working spaces specifically designed to support Black-owned businesses, offering affordable workspace and resources.
• Run campaigns to raise awareness of
the importance of supporting Blackowned businesses, encouraging consumers to make conscious purchasing decisions.
• Develop and promote directories of Black-owned businesses to make it easier for consumers and other businesses to find and support them.
• Technological Integration
• Provide resources and support for Black-owned businesses to adopt digital tools and platforms, enhancing their online presence and operational efficiency.
• Assist Black-owned businesses in setting up and optimizing e-commerce platforms to expand their market reach.
• Encourage large corporations to partner with Black-owned businesses through mentorship programs, joint ventures, and preferential procurement policies.
• Urge companies to include support for Black-owned businesses in their CSR initiatives, providing funding, resources, and market access.
Even adopting a few of these new proposals would make a difference, adopting all of them would be very impactful. •
PPardna - The App With The DNA of the Windrush Generation
ardna App is based on the age-old sys tem of communal saving, practiced among African, Caribbean and Asian communities. Known by such names as “susu”, “ajo”, “hagbad”, “likelebma” and “pardna”, this practice was essential to those who came to the UK from the late 1940s only to find themselves denied access to credit by financial institutions.
It was upon this legacy and the desire to pro vide the solution to today’s ongoing cost of the living crisis that led founder Paul Henriques to develop Pardna App alongside co-founder Dee Odus.
When people learn that there is now an app for the group saving system they know of via family, friends, or older relatives, there is always that warm glow of familiarity and cultural recognition, the smile of memories or the sense of community they felt and perhaps still feel.
“Our goal with Pardna App is to democratise financial access to those who need it most, at a time when we are all going through financial struggles. At the same time, we want to maintain the cultural heritage and history of pardna and continue the legacy that the Windrush Generation introduced into the UK out of necessity.” Paul commented.
In its short space in time, Pardna App has been featured in the Bank of England Museum as part of their exhibition “Pardner Hand: A Caribbean Answer to British Banking Exclusion” and has won and been nominated for several awards, including two Black Tech Achievement Award nominations for App of the Year, and Fintech Person of the Year.
“It is important to us to introduce the pardna system to the next generation. Our young people can continue the tradition of their parents and grandparents via the medium we are all extremely familiar with - our mobile phones.
We are dedicated to ensuring that we all have the knowledge that there is an alternative to high-cost short term loans and punitive credit cards, and change mindsets towards finance, in order to plant the seeds of generational wealth within our community.”
Pardna App is available now in the App Store and in Google Play.
Our goal with Pardna App is to democratise financial access to those who need it most, at a time when we are all going through financial struggles “
UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY
CELEBRATING THE 1ST YEAR OF THE SCRATCHCARD INITIATIVE IN BRADFORD
In June last year, Unity In The Community launched a groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the country. They partnered with 40 businesses, organizations, and individuals, each sponsoring a number for a year at £192 per person.
This effort generated £7680, which was evenly split: half went to prize money distributed over 12 months, and the other half was allocated to a community fund.
To ensure total transparency, every month around the 15th, one of the sponsors was invited for an interview. The process of scratching the cards and announcing the winning numbers was recorded up close. Before revealing the winners, the sponsor was interviewed about their business, future plans, and given promotional exposure through the filming. A professionally edited video was then shared with all sponsors and the community.
“The successful positive feedback and the generosity of 90% of the first-year winners, who chose to give back, means we will definitely be continuing for a second year,” said a representative. “We aim to promote more engagement within our community, encouraging people to support each other and achieve greater unity locally and beyond.”
Additionally, they are encouraging local Black businesses to collaborate and conduct more business together, setting a positive example for the youth and strengthening the business community.

Participants in the games can win trophies, with runners-up also recognized, all in the spirit of fun and laughter.
These guest-listed events run from 6 pm to 1 am and typically fill up a week before the launch. An optional minimum donation of £10 is collected at the door to support these non-profit events. The next event is scheduled for Friday, 28th June 2024.

One True Concoction for wellbeing
Three years ago at her dad’s birthday party Shirley White had the spark of an idea for a new business.
I looked around and realized that in our community we make alot of homemade food and drinks in plastic reusable bottles she says.
I thought, surely there’s a better way of presenting these delicious beverages. My children and my children’s generation are not going to do what my father’s generation and previous generations did, which is making the drinks at home. Time is a major factor. And so the journey began.
Shirley’s background was miles away from the food and beverage industry. After spending time working for local government, she spied an ad in the evening standard that caught her eye and went along to a wine and cheese evening, during which she landed a customer service role in the world of market data and investment banking.
After 30 years working in the City for companies including Telerate, Deutsche Bank and HSBC, she was ready for her next challenge – and so OTC Beverages was born. OTC offers sorrel and non-alcoholic ginger beer in
bottles and cans now available in corner shops and takeaways across London.
Although it is a new industry for her, Shirley says there have been many transferable skills from her former life in finance. It’s the skills you get from project management and juggling a multi million programs within large organizations, she explains.
In addition she has researched, networked, learnt product design, packaging and more importantly being able to work with people from all backgrounds in order to provide a product which is healthy and can be utilized by all.
From the start Shirley knew she didn’t want to be brewing up drinks in her own kitchen, but says it took some time to perfect the recipe in the facto-
ry. She adopted a less is more philosophy to their formulation by using only identifiable quality ingredients such as organic cane sugar instead of artificial sweeteners.
She emphasizes the natural health benefits of ginger and sorrel as well as their potential in an ever growing market for non and low alcoholic drinks. Her flavours are already proving popular, with OTC Beverages winning and being nominated for numerous awards since inception.
Shirley is now working to bring her products to more locations in the United Kingdom and has plans for the rest of the world as well.
There are a few logistical wrinkles to iron out, but she’s hoping to bring her sorrel and ginger beer to other markets including America and Africa. Currently, it’s at the point where you’re growing the brand, you want it to take on momentum and you want it to be an identifiable brand of choice when people go to a shop to buy a cold drink, she says.

A serious combination loaded with love
We are two creative women who take pride in all that we do. All the creations on our stall are made with loads of love and affection from our home to yours.
A bit about us: - Jazzie is a trained nurse, and spent over 30 years working for the NHS. Jazz decided to embark on making her own Bajan hot sauces when she was unable to find anything that replicated the sauce that her grandmother used to make. So Jazz made it her mission to revive her grandmother’s recipes, and so Jazz’s sauce was born.
Although it's time consuming to make, the taste is exceptional and you therefore will not be disappointed - except if you always keep a back up bottle in your fridge. No additives, no preservatives, so keep them refrigerated at all times.
And just to note, once a nurse... always a nurse, there is nothing that she does not know about your ailments, and she continues to hand out good advice!
Bev - Swapping social work after 35 years to rein in the fruits and veggies from her garden and allotment, lovingly nurtured and pruned by her wonderful husband using natural organic remedies,
and no pesticides used anywhere.
Bev hates creepy crawlies and bugs, so she lovingly admires her husband’s handiwork from afar until he harvests the fruits and veg to make delicious jams, pickles, chutneys, and of course our hot! hot! Jamaican pepper sauce and pickle.
Bev’s paternal grandmother died at the ripe old age of 108 in Jamaica, and she was a herbalist and matriarch of her community, as well has having many other talents including making a feast out of nothing. My father who was equally impressive (and is my inspiration) would say that I take after my grandmother, as I also have the imagination to create and invent many of my own recipes.
Jazz and myself are old school friends, and both had high powered and stressful jobs. As well as being a social worker, Bev also helped out in the family West Indian bakery business which was also very demanding physically. When the bakery closed around 2017, Bev found that people kept saying they missed her jams, sauces, pickles and chutneys that we used to sell in the shop. Jazz’s family and friends were also delighted with the fact that she had perfected her grandmother’s sauce and the demand for it
was high.
Given the back ground that we both have, Jazzie and myself love engaging with people, and both of us being hard working people, decided to take our venture on the road and see where it leads, starting with various markets and fayres.
We decided as we are both young retired people, lol, that we would let the business work for us and not the other way around, and take things in our stride, but no one envisaged that our products would have taken off as much as they have. We are now endeav oring to take. to take the busi ness as far as we can, so that people can taste the difference in what we produce and taste the love that it is prepared with.
Jazz is from Barbados and I am Jamaican, so after some consideration we have decided that we will now change our name from Bev’s kitchen to ‘Dem two sistas’, reflecting and bringing our two cultures and some of our cuisine together. Diversity is our game, so fingers crossed there is something here for everyone, so have a taste, or have a little chat when
you see us at markets, which will brighten up our day!
One of our best combinations, which you must try, is called ‘Marriage made in heaven’ it consists of my ‘bread and butter pickle’ and ‘Jazz’s original Bajan sauce’ together in a seriously delicious combination.
I will try and describe the taste for you,
it’s a cucumber pickle which goes through a two-day process to enhance the flavour, it’s a wonderful condiment to any meal or in sandwiches, and is an excellent accompaniment to any cheese board.
The sweet and sour taste will have your taste buds dancing in amazement, along with the piquant flavour of the scotch bonnet in Jazz’s sauce which is not just about the heat.
Our other products include hot sauces with mango or pineapple, sweet chilli jam and spicy ginger & pineapple jams, ‘Rainbow chutney’, ‘Soca Wid Me chutney’, ‘Good Golly Miss Molly chutney’, homemade Kimchi and heaps more. Our products will transport you to another world, and satisfy those unique cravings regardless where you are from.
Our main aim now is to get out our
online shop up and running, and our longterm plan is to make our products accessible to everyone, including any supermarkets who may be interested in selling our products.
Please enjoy our products and leave some feedback on our Instagram feed @Bevs.kitchen1 and @jazzie1258
My journey to food was invigorated during a time of famine in my old country Ghana. These were the times when food that may have been traditionally shunned by one tribe or other, rose to the fore. There is a beauty in stepping out of your usual ex pectation.
Food makes great conversation. I wanted to be spoken about. As a sort of curator of taste. I loved the concept of fusion cooking. Still do.
I am an artist. I paint, I write plays, poetry, short stories and songs. I am an artist. I food too. All art is an emotive experience. So is great food. In past projects, everyone crashed at my house. They knew the food would be good.
The artist in me wanted to share what I leant from my Grandma Augusta’s kitchen and my Mum Stella’s restaurant. There was re ally no place in Milton Keynes to try African inspired food. I started a biweekly dinner club “How To Eat An African.” Well, people go for an Indian and a Chinese, don’t they? This was a great journey. A great evening out with good food and live performance. Dinner to live music, poetry, a dance ensemble or a short play.
I moved on to establish a res taurant Yaw’s House: The Soul food Experience. Real hard work but really rewarding too. The

early morning trips to markets like Spitalfields and the late-night restaurant life scared me. I wanted to be a father who was home. My kids were very young and I only saw them when they were asleep or when I was exhausted. So The Soulfood Restaurant became The Soulfood Experience. An event catering business. About 24 years ago, a client asked if I could guarantee if my food was going to be as good as her Mamma’s. (Her Mother in-law’s). I promised her, it would be better. We laughed, but it was.
Better Than Mamma’s was born. I see myself as a curator of transcultural cuisine translated through the flavours of Africa and the Caribbean.
In this journey, the greatest lesson I learnt was knowing when to hold back. Many new chefs like to stick 50 items on the menu. Choose 5 or 6 and make them the best ever.

“Don’t waste a good crisis.”
Turning Challenges into Opportunities for Black Businesses
Black business owners face a unique set of challenges, often operating in an environment with limited access to resources and historical inequities. But these challenges can also be opportunities for innovation and growth. The key is to adopt a mindset that sees crisis as a catalyst for positive change.
Imagine a global pandemic shutting down your in-person business model. Devastating, right? Not necessarily. This was the reality for my business, DOES, during the early days of COVID. However, a powerful quote – "Don't waste a good crisis" – shifted my perspective.
I first introduced to this quote by Murray McLennan former CEO of the M&C Saatchi Group, who are still DOES’
lead sponsorship partner.
Instead of succumbing to despair, we saw the situation as a chance to adapt. With everyone at home, how could we provide value remotely? This led to a partnership with Somerset House's online festival, reaching over 3,000 viewers and exceeding our initial target threefold.
This "opportunity in crisis mindset" has fueled our success beyond the pandemic. The response to George Floyd's death inspired "Mentor Black Business," which was the UK's third-largest small business mentoring platform in 2021. Similarly, the Black Business Residency program emerged from another challenge, becoming an award-winning initiative which is still running today.
In a world facing constant change, challenges are inevitable. For business change a crisis can be a catalyst for remarkable achievements. So, embrace the "don't waste a good crisis" approach. See challenges as opportunities to innovate, adapt, and ultimately, thrive.

He recognised the industry's imperative for diversity and inclusion, we provide access and support in a safe space facilitated by relatable role mod els across world-leading organisations with first-hand success stories.
Our unique platform spans STEM programs & activations, media programs, esports & driver talent identification, delivering a comprehensive impact for the vast array of roles on offer. We work with organisations within motorsport to support their internal EDI strategy via our educational and lived feedback that focus on 6 areas of high performance. Anchored by a dis tinguished advisory board, we strategically position ourselves in the growing global motorsport market to champion diverse talent and drive positive change.
for young people from diverse backgrounds within the motorsport community.
Our unique ethnic-led perspective allows us to actively support individuals personally and professionally, offering networking opportunities, expert career advice, and confidence-building initiatives in the competitive motorsport industry.
We have leverage in our community as real role models to deliver STEM Outreach and Programmes across the UK in less affluent areas, providing See It, Be It. Access to relatable mentors within the industry and creating opportunities for talent to enter the sector through our contacts and network thus removing barriers which some do still exist.. An example is career insights by those working within current and next generation folks, along with resources which can be used across schools relating to the national curriculum.
With endorsement from key government figures and strategic partnerships, we employ customer-focused approaches to achieve our goals effectively, ensuring lasting representation
With our driver academy and diversity deficient within UK Motorsport, mainly due to the excessive cost of participating. With self-funding and sponsorship being the main method of financing a career in Motorsport, coupled with a lack of a transparent talent identification programme, drivers from racially diverse backgrounds are highly unlikely to make a career in the sport.
Driven By Us directors with 1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill at Sandown Park for charity karting race
Driven By Us Team with Rio Ferinand Foundation conducting their Accelerating Inclusion Program with industry role models delivering STEM modules to inspire the next generation with lasting impact
Driven By Us believes that electric-powered racing, typically in inner cities, is synonymous with diversity and most importantly, with positive change. There are a few initiatives starting this year that we think may create opportunities for drivers from relatively less affluent backgrounds to participate, perhaps from as early as next year,
In partnership with Rob Smedley's Global Karting League, the Driven By Us academy has four drivers starting their racing career in sustainable driving in 2024 and together, we intend to negotiate an affordable sustainable pathway for diverse drivers. In addition, GKL offers STEM training as standard as part of their package. Driven By Us aims to provide “See It Be It” based optional modules to diverse drivers as part of this package
Our main focus for 2024 is to continue to build the community with our recent announcement by partnering with Mission 44 supporting our work in the industry of motorsports and STEM."
Away from the much talked about African Caribbean Sustainability & Investment Summit (ACSIS) to be held in London, November 21-23, 2024, ACSIS continues to gather momentum.
ACSIS aims to bring together key diaspora stakeholders from the African and Caribbean business communities of the United Kingdom to discuss and strategize sustainable investments across various sectors.
UK based entrepreneurs with heritage links to Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, Saint Lucia and Jamaica will participate in panel discussions, roundtable discussions and workshops to discuss business best practice on fours sectors, Agriculture, Cybersecurity, Climate Change and Tourism.
Presentations will be delivered over three days at three separate venues. Day I will focus on high-level roundtable meetings ‘Business Meets Diplomacy,’ involving African and Caribbean High Commissioners / Ambassadors and diplomatic staff, at the UK House of Lords. Day II will focus on cybersecurity, tourism and investment at Lloyds of London; and Day III will address matters pertaining to agriculture, climate change and diaspora engagement.
Chairman of ACSIS, David F. Roberts, expressed how delighted he is at the level of interest coming from the seven participating countries and the importance of the delivery of an academic White Paper on the impact of cybersecurity on diaspora business.
Roberts is also quite pleased at the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with world renowned Leaders Without Borders Development Centre (LWB) a highly respected global organisation focused on improving leadership and entrepreneurial skills within the African communities while creating an environment for trade and investment. LWB Founder and Principal Partner, Amb. Dr. Hillary Emoh deemed the partnership ‘A critical and timely step in the right direction and this union sets the stage for untold possibilities in Africa and the Caribbean.’
ACSIS was conceived following the successful Guyana Diaspora Sustainability & Investment Conference (GDSIC),
November 18th and 19th 2023 where one significant outcome was the statement by London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) Director of Sustainable Finance and Investment, Mr Ibukun Adebayo, which suggested he had ideas about how the Exchange could help Guyana improve its international credit rating. That event also witnessed presentations from senior Guyana government officials, Dr Peter Ramsaroop, Chief Investment Officer and Ms Rosalinda Rasul, Head, Diaspora Affairs Unit.
Feedback from GDSIC inspired the genesis of ACSIS to broaden the concept scope to include Africa thereby bridging the socio-economic and cultural gap that inhibits optimal trade and investment between Africa and the Caribbean at diaspora level.
For details on how to register for the Summit or buy tickets email: enquiries@africancaribbeansummit.com or visit www.africancaribbeansummit.com

Embracing our unique beauty
With over a decade of experience, loctician, educator and owner of ButterChocLocs, Divina Kum-Jones-Alleyne has her mission set on not only cultivating healthy and enjoyable loc journeys, but also highlighting the importance of understanding the care of our natural hair and how the quality of our inner work has an impact on our outer selves.
The ButterChocLocs studio has entered its fourth year creating a unique and sought after natural hair experience, offering private appointments in a welcoming and safe space to discuss your hair concerns and goals. Through the many conversations she has had with clients, Divina began to realise that what is missing from these conversations is community.
This led her to found Natural Essence Hair Show, a curated experience celebrating the beauty and culture of locs, natural hair and wellness; creating a supportive community by connecting and immersing guests in impactful talks and workshops with natural hair and wellness professionals.
Divina explains, “Locs have grown in their popularity, but it can still feel like they sit as a niche within the hair industry and society. Their care and styling can still feel like a mystery. It is for this reason Natural Essence Hair Show was birthed, to boldly celebrate the beauty of locs and the empowerment of embracing our own beauty standards defined by Black beauty.”

Helping Black business owners to network & grow
It has been an interesting last 12 months for my businesses. The Black community has often said we should collaborate more, but we don’t have many institutions to make that happen. So, I have launched a membership-based organisation to do just that.
The Black Business Club has grown to over 50 members in 2024. We want to get well beyond 100 members by the end of this year. The more members we have, the more business opportunities we can share.
We meet twice per month online to network, learn business growth tips and to build quality relationships so we can introduce more business opportunities to each other. I have also invested in a new digital platform for members. This will make it easier for members and the public to search for members’ services and products. It will also provide an exclusive platform for members to access business videos; documents and other gems to help develop
their businesses.
I work with a wide range of business owners and sole traders. From business planning sessions to regular coaching on areas like marketing, sales or team development. Clients range from those selling products to social care providers, retailers, trades and other professional services. I have been coaching senior executives for several years and in May, I became a Certified Executive ActionCOACH. Working with C-Suite senior executives and their teams is different, as I focus more on behavioural change, rather than business development.
Helping them to be more effective leaders is crucial. As part of their journey, I also run training on Inclusive Leadership; a 12 Week Management Course and other topics like Dignity @ Work.
My current clients include Santander, Cricket Ireland and the Pentecostal Credit Union and a former client at Kier Transportation gave me a great
testimonial:
“Asari has worked with my team and I for over a decade. Throughout that period, he has provided robust challenge to our thinking and approach in order to help us become more diverse and inclusive.
A highly valued personal coach to me, and others in my team, he encourages us to challenge norms and conventions to create a culture where everyone can thrive. He is also a hugely inspirational speaker helping to embed important messages across the workforce.” - Joe Incutti, Group Managing Director, Kier Transportation.
