A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

Aaron Jaqua I've heard it said that the opposite of addiction isn't sobriety, it's connection. As human beings we need interaction with one another, we need a place to belong. Over the last year, The Virtue Center has continued to provide help and hope for people facing addiction and mental health challenges. This year has been an unprecedented time due to the global pandemic crisis of COVID-19. Through the leadership and dedication of our executive director and staff, The Virtue Center was able to pivot on short notice to provide telehealth services for clients. Our executive director worked with the board and community leaders to access financial resources to keep the organization in a strong position during the crisis. We've expanded our

staff with the hiring of a development director and to say that much was accomplished this last year would be a significant understatement. Â

We implemented a strategic plan with specific goals in order to continue progressing our mission as an agency in each program and service we provide. The Board of Directors has grown and evolved this year as well. We are excited as we look forward to the next chapter of The Virtue Center narrative: to expand our services we provide to our clients, continue to break down the stigma associated with addiction and mental health, and creating a place for people to belong in order to experience help and hope.

100% of The Virtue Center Board of Directors made a financial contribution in FY20

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

This has been quite the year not only for The Virtue Center and the communities we serve but for our state, our country and our world. The Pandemic brought about the need for telehealth services which we implemented practically overnight. I am proud of our team and how it all came together so quickly. There was never a break in services. The focus was always on how to continue life-saving services during this very difficult time while balancing that with safety for our clients and our employees. I am proud of how we have handled this, and we couldn’t have done it without our partners who helped us and continue to help us through this unprecedented time.

Teresa Collado

And the crisis continues. The long-term results will lead to higher rates of addiction and mental health challenges. The Health Minds Policy Initiative, a nonpartisan team of Oklahoma policy and mental health experts, released this information in research-based report on the projected impact of the pandemic mental health and addiction for Oklahomans:Suicide ideation and attempts will increase substantially. An estimated 92,000 more Oklahomans may experience suicidal thoughts, and 18,400 may attempt suicide. Childhood mental health needs will increase substantially. For example, as many as 30% of children involved inmay experience post-traumatic stress disorder. Unemployment and financial stress will increase drug addiction. For example, more than 13,000 additional Oklahomans may develop substance use disorders (SUD). Hundreds of Oklahomans may die from mental health issues. We estimate 374 additional deaths from opioid overdoses and suicides alone due to economic hardship.” Our state already ranks high for addiction and other mental health issues and ranks among the lowest in funding. Sadly, our mission will be as relevant as ever if not more than ever. As the crisis continues indefinitely, we will be here, now and in the aftermath. We are grateful to our partners as we navigate uncharted waters with our mission as our compass: a place of help and hope for people facing addiction and mental health challenges.

We are in this together, and we make a difference.

An Adult Story of Hope Mike is a 36 year old veteran living in Norman. He has complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and struggled with a severe alcohol use disorder for many years. Mike had many failed attempts at treatment with the Veterans Administration. Group therapy with other veterans aggravated his PTSD, and he had to be hospitalized. At discharge, he was told that he would die if he didn't get help. He googled Intensive Outpatient Treatment and found The Virtue Center, walked in, asked for help and we said yes. Mike, married with 3 children, completed our six week Intensive Outpatient group therapy in addition to weekly individual therapy sessions. He has maintained sobriety for over 60 days as he continues in twice weekly group therapy and weekly individual therapy sessions. The biggest accomplishment in his treatment is that Mike has identified The Virtue Center as a place where he feels safe. After years of not being able to leave his house because of his PTSD being triggered, he recently spoke about his recovery to civic leaders which is truly a miracle. Even more incredible, Mike was able to leave his home to attend his daughter's Kindergarten Valentine's Day party. The Virtue Center continues to be a safe place for all who seek treatment, including those with severe traumatic history.

An Adolescent Story of Hope In the system since age 12, “Joe” was referred to The Virtue Center (TVC) multiple times; first through the alternative to suspension program with Norman Public Schools, then through a positive drug test while on probation, and finally as a Juvenile Drug Court participant.

94% of Surveyed Adolescent Clients and their Families Report Improved Family Relationships

"My son is doing better in school. He has a much more positive attitude and feels better about himself."

At the beginning of his treatment, Joe consistently failed drug tests and completed the bare minimum required to avoid detention sanctions. Joe was challenging to his therapists and would often spend the entire session in silence going back and forth between intense staring and complete avoidance of eye contact. Joe continued his substance abuse and refused to change his peer group. He was not attending classes or completing required assignments; he continued sneaking out at night and engaging in criminal activity. After months of treatment, Joe began to open up to his therapist. He had found his motivation and was ready for change. Joe began counting days of sobriety. His sessions would often run over as he soaked up information from his therapist about overcoming cravings and ways to handle relapse. Joe’s work paid off and he was able to graduate Juvenile Drug Court with 157 days of sobriety, four days before his 18th birthday.

Vaping Education Class The Virtue Center offers a monhly, one-time Vaping Education Class. This class discusses the effects and dangers of vaping with adolescents and their parents or guardians.
