A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT Brittni McGill

The Virtue Center's mission is to provide help and hope for people facing addiction and mental health challenges. This mission has been executed in a variety of ways over this past fiscal year. Through The Virtue Center's engaged team, dynamic executive director and a clear vision detailed through its strategic plan, the commitment to the community has been unwavering. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown an even brighter light on the challenges of the systems caring for clients suffering from behavioral and mental health challenges. The exacerbation of the disease has further enhanced The Virtue Center's mission and desire to expand services in innovative ways.

Through board support and community collaboration, The Virtue Center has launched a capital campaign to provide a space that reflects the exceptional services provided. This space will provide clients with the dignity, respect and programmatic offerings they deserve as they travel the road to recovery. The Board of Directors and The Virtue Center leadership desire to multiply the effectiveness by expanding services and clients treated. Nimbleness is one of the of the many strengths of The Virtue Center. Accountability, high expectations and results drive nimble adjustments that keep the organization thriving. I look forward to the future progress.

This past year has been an opportunity for growth. We provided services in-person and virtually and will continue to offer the option of virtual services as we move forward.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Teresa Collado

Adding this option helped removed transportation and time barriers making treatment more accessible. Our team has been laser-focused on meeting the needs of people with courage to find recovery during this difficult time. In the midst of the pandemic, we launched our capital campaign to build a new trauma-informed design facility to better meet the needs of people and our community. This has been an opportunity to tell people about the important mission and services of our agency, and the response has been incredible. More people and organizations know about the important work we do and are willing to invest in truly life-saving programs. The synergy of our capital campaign cabinet has been awe-inspiring. We anticipate moving into our new building in the Fall of 2022 and could not have done it without this special group of people. We need all of your help to get there but we are well on our way. And lastly, this is an opportunity to Smash the Stigma! This has been our unofficial motto of the campaign. We are committed to smashing the stigma of addiction and other mental health challenges. These are not moral issues. It's about people suffering from a disease and having the opportunity to get better and healthy. No more shame. No more blame. We offer the dignity, hope, respect and compassion that all people deserve. Our new facility will reflect just that, and we will expand our services to reach even more people. Thank you to all who support our mission.

Building Hope, Connection & Community Capital Campaign

An Adult Story of Hope

Brooke came to The Virtue Center for services while still actively using heroin. She had no employment or transportation and she was living with her sister who was also actively using. She began attending the Intensive Outpatient group and having weekly sessions with a therapist and a peer recovery support specialist. She initially determined that she would "fake her way through" treatment and then get back to her regular life, but as she participated in her program, something began to shift. She moved into a sober living program and started a part-time job. She started exercising regularly and using the tools she learned in therapy to change the way she thought and coped. Brooke flew through the next phases of her treatment. She recently began a full-time position with much higher pay. She has an apartment of her own and has regained custody of her three children. Brooke continues to attend therapy sessions at The Virtue Center where she is gaining powerful insights into her substance use disorder, learning to have patience and compassion for herself and developing a better understanding of her emotions. Her resilience has grown immensely as she continues to use tools gained in treatment to cope with challenges and remain sober.

This year, The Virtue Center, in collaboration with the National Center for Wellness & Recovery at Oklahoma State University, began offering medically assisted treatment for clients. There are some substance use disorders for which FDA approved medications will reduce the risk of overdose, help manage cravings and support long-term recovery; some medications may also help individuals struggling with problem gambling.

An Adolescent Story of Hope Greg graduated from Adolescent Treatment Court a few days before his 18th birthday with more than 200 days of sobriety. Growing up he saw himself as being a "nobody in life, alone and hopeless." He couldn't see a way out of his addiction. When he found out his girlfriend was expecting his baby, he discovered hope that things could be different. His therapist at The Virtue Center helped him learn better ways to deal with anger and to talk about his feelings. After graduation, Greg only had one thing in mind moving forward and accomplishing goals that would help him be successful and able to take care of his family. Now he is the one providing support for others as they seek sobriety. He encourages his friends and assures them that life is better without drugs.

"My child is thinking more positively about himself and has made a lot of positive life changes."

Family Education The Virtue Center offers a monthly Vaping Education Class. This class discusses the effects and dangers of vaping with adolescents and their parents or guardians. Adolescents and their parents can also attend Addiction Information Series. This series, which serves as the Alternative to Suspension program for Norman Public Schools, includes four classes and covers topics that include: Understanding substance abuse Substance abuse and the family Trauma and substance abuse Levels of treatment and options for care
