Just two weeks after this newspaper wrote to the Councillor for Urban Planning, José Aix, requesting information on the legality of the fairground siting in Cabo Roig, on public land adjacent to the Centro Salud, it has been closed by the Orihuela Council. It was subsequently revealed in the Spanish newspaper, Diario Informacion, that the facility had been operating since the beginning of July without an opening Josélicense.Aix,Councillor for Urban Planning, which is part of the Activities area, the department responsible for granting permits, said that after verifying that much of the documentation required had not been presented, the activity was ceased, although he added that if the operators correct the deficiencies it will automatically reopen.

When visiting the site in recent days, according to users, there were numerous safety problems requiring action, including the deterioration of cables strewn across the floor as well as inflatables that were not anchored to the ground, a situation that had caused the death of two children at a fairground in Valencia in January when a bouncy castle was thrown into the air by a strong gust of wind. On 29 July it is understood that a letter was received by the City Council registry stating that many other businesses in the area wonder why the fairground was receiving preferential treatment, as it is a health and safety hazard, it does not have "any type of security, inflatables are not anchored to the ground." Attached to the letter were a number of photographs backing up the author’s claims. In addition, the letter added, "the Police and the Orihuela Council are aware of numerous complaints", and even three years ago many signatures were collected from among the local residents objecting it it’s operation. The letter goes on to request that the Council reviews the installation and opening permits, the occupancy rates, the civil liability insurance and the responsible declaration (a procedure required by the regulations).

Meanwhile, Alicante-Elche Airport has registered more than one and a half million passengers during the month of July, which represents a recovery of 88% of passenger traffic in 2019, pre pandemic.
The Bitcoin ATM’s should be installed in the next week or two
The2019.international market had the highest number of travellers with 1.2 million passengers, and the domestic market accounted for more than 224 thousand travellers, almost 30% more than in July 2019.
Cryptocurrencies, although not currently at their strongest, have become an increasingly used means with which to make purchases and even pay for plane tickets, and now, because of increasing demand, Aena has decided to launch a pilot scheme of the installation of ATMs in airports, choosing three tourist destinations for this purpose.
Spain is currently the third country in the world with the most cryptocurrency ATMs, behind the United States and Canada, with some 217 units, although until now they have not been available at airports.
Both national and international traffic showed similar trends during the month, in relation to the traffic levels of the year
These are Alicante-Elche airport, together with Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, where travellers will become the first in Spain to be able to acquire digital currencies. Should the trial produce positive results, it will be extended to other airports cross the country.
the company that has been awarded the permit is the startup BitBase, which is recognized by the Bank of Spain as a provider of virtual currency exchange services for fiduciary currency. It is expected that in the coming weeks the ATMs will be available in these three terminals.
The use of bitcoins is becoming increasingly common as more and more people are making transactions for the purchase of clothing, video games, gift cards and even plane tickets with the cryptocurrency. On this basis, Aena has awarded licenses to install the first cryptocurrency ATMs in the three Spanish Accordingairports.toAena,
The countries from which Alicante received the most travellers were the United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

Crypto currency ATM’s were first introduced at Heathrow and Gatwick airports in 2014 but here in Spain these first machines are being introduced as a trial. Aena says that it has chosen the three airports because they are of relevance at a tourist level and deepending on the acceptance and the results, they could be extended elsewhere.

SASAT ANIMAL RESCUET ANIMAL RESCUE
IS THERE A NEW GHOST IN OUR MACHINE?
I'm told by those who know -- one of the best ways to learn -- that there is a device in computer circles called a "weird machine." I was somewhat alarmed at the idea of computer security geeks running around in circles acting weirdly, until I read my latest bank statement, after which nothing could alarm me further. A weird machine is 'an artefact with additional code execution'. It operates, as you might expect, on "weird instructions," whereby 'an exploit is based on crafted outside input.' No, I didn't understand it either, but the words 'execution outside' gave me even more to be alarmed about. By the time I was being informed -- by those in the know, no less -- that a classical attack takes advantage of a 'stack buffer overflow', I had to lie down with a damp artefact on my fevered brow. The ghost in the machine usually refers to our mind as opposed to our body, and my own mind began to be haunted at an early age, when I first read about a machine that could fire bullets through the propeller blades of an aircraft in motion. That must have made some older pilots hanker after more gentlemanly times, when fliers fired pistols at each other during dogfights in Sopwith Camels and Albatros fighters. (If those actual creatures ever fought, which one would win, I wonder?) The creator of Biggles, Captain W.E. Johns, shot his own propeller off twice, something Biggles never did. Machines are useful when they do our bidding obediently, but with the emergence of weird machines it increasingly looks as if they can now do anything they happen to feel like, by adding their own 'code executions' without executing our wishes. And (so far) not us Oldereither. machines still serve us well, of course, and I don't just mean drink dispensers. My elderly chickenshaped egg boiler still functions, as does my ice cream cone producer and Rubik Cube Solver, time savers all. My paper aeroplane maker has flown a few too many missions, but at least it doesn't require a propeller. I'm told there was once a machine called a Globe Inflator which showed how the world was formed, but the Flat Earth Society didn't buy it. These days, new ghosts are being added to those that have already populated our minds since childhood. Most of them are much scarier than Casper the Friendly Ghost, who is pleasantly translucent -- if Casper tried to scare you, you would see right through him. ("You're a tad transparMostent!") countries seem to possess ghosts that come in the form of Headless Horsemen, Women in White, and wretches rattling chains and bemoaning their long incarceration in towers or dungeons, usually in an attempt to prevent their ascent to some throne or other. In my own case, The Witchery by the Castle, a spectacularly atmospheric restaurant on Edinburgh's Castlehill, was a frequent haunt of mine in more prosperous times. I often lost my head when ordering from their a la carte menu, and to this day I have no further need of a Howwallet.canwe talk about new ways of frightening us and not mention our present worldwide threat, a spectre worse than any James Bond ever Fortunately, encountered?society now has a method of executing the corona code of our least favourite Thevirus.old fashioned way, in which a needle in the arm performs an exorcism on the unfriendly ghosts trying to wreck our machines. And four exorcisms are better than three, apparently, weird as that sounds. Woooo..!

Those of us present in Clonkill on Monday evening were treated to a marvellous game of hurling. Lough Lene Gaels edged out champions Raharney by a single point in a thriller.
Maybe those girls will inspire their male counterparts - the ‘poor relations’ in their county … but as St Augustine pleaded; ‘not just yet, oh Lord!’
DON’T FORGET
The match was played in glorious sunshine before a decent sized Whencrowd.andwhere it was played mattered little to the supporters of these two great clubs – but it was still played at 7pm on a Monday evening! A Monday evening! Is this what all the fuss about having the All-Ireland finals in July and giving the rest of the Summer to the clubs boils down to, Larry!? But let us not be churlish about this year’s inter-county fare just because it was more like running 200M hurdles than a 1500 metre race. What an excellent year it has been for Westmeath. Our footballers winning the inaugural Tailteann Cup was a joy to behold – and there can never be but one first time winner – and that is us! The hurlers draw with Wexford was a tremendous boost for hurling in the county. Well done to both camps and hopefully the successes for 2022 will be built upon for next year. I never thought I would be so happy to see Meath win another All-Ireland football title! Let us take this opportunity to congratulate the Royal ladies on their fantastic achievement in winning back to back titles, and for what they have done for women’s football.

The quietest sport of all must be bowling – you can hear a pin drop. 637 227 385
In the midst of all this craziness in a world gone mad, sport remains the one constant in our lives. It is a distraction from the perils we fear might be around the next corner, stimulates passions and offers hope of better things to come.
Now, if only Liverpool hadn’t dropped 2 points in their opening Premiership match … We cannot hide from the fact that there are some dark clouds hanging over sport. Sport is under threat – and it isn’t to do with any of the above perils. Drugs in sport is well highlighted and the battle to keep sport clean goes on. Something we don’t hear mentioned as often, but in a way is sports greatest threat – and that is gambling.

*Author, entrepreneur and newspaper columnist, Bernie Comaskey, now spends most of his time on a farm in Ireland; but he retains his strong links with the Costa Blanca.
McCarthyism is not the final solution … Larry McCarthy, president of the GAA has to be a good man. He is undoubtedly a great GAA man, or he would not have risen to the top of the greatest sporting organisation in the world. Larry has succeeded in implementing the new ‘split season’, whereby the All-Ireland series was concluded in July, with the remainder of the summer reserved for club activities. He is very adamant that the current system will stay in place. Many believe it needs a bit of tweaking. An T-Uasal McCarthy wrote a piece in the All-Ireland match day programme where his criticism of those who aren’t altogether happy with the present format was rather rancid. I know the changes were voted on by Central Council and democracy is democracy; but there is still something not quite right here. Those who believe that the changes were ‘overdone’ are also good GAA people and their reservations should not be so summarily dismissed. If the new arrangement was altered a little by extending the championship into the third week of August it would be better for all concerned; and remember there are only four counties left in each code at the semi-final stage - and so club competition can be well underway across the country before AllIreland Sunday. The clubs would still have a sufficient portion of the split season in which to finish their championship. After all, the AllIreland Football Final used to be played on the third Sunday in September and most often October provides better hurling conditions than does March or even April. Larry McCarthy is passionate about the split season - and he is right; but whilst the compressed inter-county competition currently in place has been put under strain, how much is the club scene benefiting from the change this year?
Another thing, Larry: Only for the corruption in FiFA, which enabled Qatar to buy the World Cup; our All-Irelands would also have been clashing with the World Cup Final, as well as a nation holding its breath as Ireland beat the All Blacks in rugby. No, the GAA is not afraid of competition and we will hold our own with any sporting event – but just because you bless yourself with holy water, it doesn’t mean you can walk across the road without looking. Anyway, where would we be without sport – all sport. The world is teetering on the brink of nuclear war. Covid is still rearing its ugly head. Climate change is already critically changing everything.

The SAMU service in Orihuela Costa will in future cover 24 hours
award process was resumed a few weeks ago, when the Central Administrative Court of Contractual Resources (TARC) lifted the suspension of the tender, which was appealed by two organisations as they disagreed with the specifications they were asked to meet. According to the Ministry of Health, the new ambulance contract will allow an increase in the different health transport units, and, thanks to this new contract, the Valencian Community will have more transport units with extended hours in many of them. Cover from both the SAMU and the Advanced Life Support ambulances, with Nursing, will increase the hours of 7 units, which will increase from 12 hours to 24 hours a day. Thus, of the 53 units in the Community, 7 of them extend their hours to offer greater coverage. Of course, the problems of providing doctors to staff these units still remain. The number of Basic Life Support Units (type B) is also increased, and 7 new units will provide this service. Of these 7 new units, 3 of them will serve for 12 hours and the other 4 units will operate 24 hours a day. In addition, 6 existing units will start operating 24 hours a day. In the case of this type of transport, the Community will have 109 vehicles compared to the current 102. In the case of non-urgent unassisted medical transport, type A ambulances, the new tender will increase the number of this type of ambulances by 61, 51 of which will provide service in the different Health Departments and 10 will be for public use. Therefore, the Community will go from having 354 type A ambulances to a fleet of 415 vehicles of this type, which are mainly responsible for transporting patients.

The young bather, who was left adrift by the sea currents, was able to be rescued by one of the drones of the prevention and rescue service contracted by the regional government, and operated by the company General Drones, which threw her a life vest, although this device failed to inflate The company's pilot led the device to the young woman in less than 40 seconds, but the incident with the life vest meant that the rescue took longer,as a second life vest was sent out on the device, which did, this "Thetime, inflate.dronesaved my life,I was exhausted, and the current would not let me out of the sea," said the victim in the statement. So far this summer, the drones of the Valencian Agency for Security and Emergency Response have already attended 87 emergencies throughout the Valencian Community from the more than 600 flights carried out over some 1,611 kilometres of Atcoastline.thebeginning of July this year, this same company announced the rescue of another five bathers on the beaches of Sagunto (Valencia) using the rapid response system method through drones. The last reported case was that of a 14year-old minor, who was trapped by the sea current on the beach of Puerto de Sagunto, in a situation similar to that of the young woman from Santa Pola. With adverse sea conditions, the lifeguard teams could not access with the jet ski,so the unmanned aircraft was used.
The Mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano, explained that they have finally solved a problem inherited from many years, and that the ECOPark was collapsing.

RECYCLING A MATTRESS A MINUTEThe Partido Popular (PP) Group in Orihuela, who were of course the majority ruling party until recently, has ordered "the Councillor for the Environment, the socialist Patricia Menárguez, to urgently repair the recharging points for electric vehicles that have been out of operation for more than a month". There are nine points which are not working, they say, which totals half of the total number of charging points in the municipality. They are located in La Aparecida, Desamparados, Avenida Teodomiro, Calle Conchita Martínez Marín, San Bartolomé, Torremendo, and Campoamor, La Zenia and Playa Flamenca on the Orihuela Costa. The claim, apparently reported to the PP by “many neighbours”, is caused by "lack of maintenance, no management and Theyneglect."add,“We demand that the government get these recharging points “Werepaired.”don't know why these people have come to the government, except to collect their payroll every month, which seems to be the only thing they know."
The company will take approximately 8 months to be able to recycle all the mattresses accumulated in the centre.
The trucks will transfer the load to the Onteniente plant where, through a technology patented worldwide, 100% of the mattress elements are recycled by means of pressurized water and returned to the industrial Amattressprocess. is recycled every minute and they manage to recover all the parts and return them to the market. It is a sustainable action and also avoids possible fires in traditional storage and recycling.

Local Police have reported how every week they remove several foreign vehicles from the streets that do not comply with the regulations for driving in Spain.
they also point out that for vehicles from outside the EU, it's not a simple process. They say, the importation of a vehicle from outside the EU is complicated, so we recommend that before carrying it out you find out from the State Tax Agency the steps that need to be taken for importation and the payments to be made at cusFortoms.some time, the authorities have received continual complaints about foreign registered vehicles driving in Spain without carrying out the correct procedures for importation. Sadly, for the Brits, this process is now a lot more complicated than it was, but doesn't change the fact that reregistration is a legal requirement if you import your vehicle. Of course, tourists visiting the country for a short period are welcome to bring their cars and are allowed to drive in Spain, but this is only for a short period of time. First-time residence permits in the EU reached close to pre-pandemic levels in 2021, according to the EU statistical office. Residence permits issued to non-EU citizens rose by 31% to 2,952,300 in 2021 due to employment and education. 2,955,300 permits were issued in 2019. Poland was the country that issued the most permits, followed by Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
The arcade on the pier had a machine in which the player attempted to shoot down images of Indians as they popped up, the device had been there a long time so must have been popular as I doubt if it would have been kept. On a day visit a thirty-three-year-old lady was with her mother visiting the area when she saw the game, she was disgusted because people should not be encouraged to attack a minority group.
One could understand why it was safer for the doctor to talk to you on a telephone, obviously they found that more efficient and time saving, but unfortunately, the old ways have not Itreturned.isashame as now everything appears to be controlled by computers, not very personal but probably more efficient. However, when an elderly person has had a bad fall, which happened recently, they have been prescribed strong painkillers, no examination, just an x-ray in ten days’ time.
40% monkeypox cases require medical treatment, study finds Around 40% monkeypox cases result in complications that require medical attention. This has been found in a study carried out in hospitals in Catalonia and Madrid, areas with most of the monkeypox cases in TheSpain.study also found that skin-to-skin contact in sexual relations is the primary mode of transmission of the virus.
The painkillers prescribed are so strong they cause serious dizziness, one reason why the lady fell over in the first place, so no examination of the damage, no nursing care, just tablets to take some of the pain away, causing more giddiness and creating instability. I think the service is losing its delicate touch. At the time of writing the x-ray is tomorrow.
The debate concerning electric cars continues with various stories and pictures. My personal thoughts, as I have said before, are that it is a technology that has not been really thought through and raises a number of issues, the main one of which is how far you can go on a single Tocharge.prove the point two events demonstrated it recently. A Mercedes driver having spent two weeks in a remote Italian village. When it was time to leave he discovered there was no place to charge his electric vehicle – he bought a portable generator so he could replenish the electrics to his car and then head home. The other was the picture of a Tesla car with a caravan attached parked on the side of the road. On the grassy bank a small portable charger and connected to the car, close by there was a spare can of fuel. Perhaps in future new electric cars, instead of being supplied with a spare wheel they will have a petrol generator and a spare petrol fuel can. KEEP YOUR KIT ON I would guess not too many people have heard of the ‘West End Proactive Partnership’, it is a police unit in London. An email has been sent to its 190 members telling them not to take their clothes off when visiting gay bars when they are off duty, otherwise it could be embarrassing if they are called to the premises in their official capacity - it is now I understand a disciplinary offence to disrobe when off duty.

On many occasions I have been known to admire and appreciate the Spanish Health Service, friendly, efficient and effective, but sadly, that seems to have changed. I guess it was forced to do so when the pandemic struck and we had the risk of groups of people spreading the Covid.
Young children when left on their own to play will make up all sorts of games, sometimes based on events on television or the cinema and one as I remember was very popular was ´Cowboys and Indians´ a naming of two sides in a young person’s pastime, it could be ´British and Germans´ soldiers or various other combinations.

I am not certain how long it has been the law for vehicles in Europe to carry two red triangles to be used in the case of having to stop on the highway. They are an impractical item to be placed behind and on the side of the road to warn traffic of the restricted space caused by the breakdown. In inclement weather they tend to get blown over also very few people understand where they should be placed and there is the added danger of dodging traffic when you display them. As from 2026 the triangle will be obsolete, they are being replaced by a portable, piercing flashing orange light which a driver can reach out of their window and place on the roof, where it is held tightly in place by a strong magnet. They can be purchased now, but as from when they become lawful, they will have the extra facility of informing the emergency services where you are via a satellite link.

Once the bulbs have finished blooming, cut off the flower stalks, but leave the leaves, as this will encourage the plants to store energy in their bulb for next season. When the leaves turn yellow, cut them away. Like most perennial bulbs, hyacinths are best propagated in the autumn by removing the bulblets from the mother plant. Even this method can take two or three years, before the bulblet grows to a size sufficient to produce large, vibrant flowers. While a bulb may continue to flower for many years, the size of the blooms and the bulbs will gradually shrink. By splitting off the bulblets every few years, you can keep your hyacinths alive, indefinitely. All kinds of rodents love to munch on hyacinth bulbs. You can give them some protection by throwing a handful of gravel into the planting hole, or you can interplant them with daffodils, which rodents tend to avoid.

This was intended to spread the word for a world wide ‘Prostate Awareness’ promotion and rallies were planned all around the globe to pass the word. The obvious intention was to raise the profile of this previously largely hidden disease that has killed many men way before their intended time on this planet. On a designated day in that eleventh month with said ‘taches where appropriate we were all encouraged to wear jackets, collar and ties, like gentlemen for the two-wheeled Rideout that was held in and around Murcia. To my amazement my old dinner jacket and dress shirt still fitted, and I found my bow tie at the back of the socks draw. I tried to look like James Bond for the day, which was a fantastic turn out. At CBS we all enjoyed the ride with many different codes of motorbikes and scooters attending the rally. At that stage of my life, aged sixty-six I was vaguely aware of the dangers of Prostate Cancer, and a few years before I had the fickle finger of fate check, and about then a couple of similar mild warnings from doctors that I had an enlarged prostate. But hey –didn’t have many men of a similar age have this Funnyproblem?though, about that time at my local surgery my doctor had actually been monitoring my ‘PSA’ level (Prostate Specific Antigen to you) by the time ‘Mouvember ‘ came around. The safe level is 4, and mine went from 3.9 in the autumn at the time of the Murcia rally to 4.8 in December, and onto 6 by January. So the duty doc duly sent me to the Urology department of Torrevieja Hospital to examine ‘matters’ further. Hmm... yet another physical examination from a young lady doctor confirmed my prostate was large and a biopsy was needed.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT: If you are one of the zillions of men and women alike who don’t know what the prostate is and does, this is a public service announcement. The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It is situated just outside the bladder, wrapped around the neck of the attached uretha which carries urine and semen to the penis. A major function of the prostate is to help produce sperm from the testicles. The problem is that later in men’s lives, usually from their fifties onwards the prostate enlarges and begins to choke the essential urine flow from the bladder – hence weeing problems that start slowly to occur. BUT... all that does NOT mean you have Prostate Cancer: it just means it should be checked out. There are various treatments available - so no panicking, eh lads, just get checked – today a simple blood test will reveal all. Back at the hospital we had entered the New Year with matters ‘mouving’ (sorry) along briskly. In February a biopsy was done, which takes a number of tissues from the prostate to examine them. Not the most pleasant of procedures, done anally – sorry lads but nothing like our ladies have to put up with.
In the same week I turned 67 in March my wife and I went back for the results - only to be told I had Prostate Cancer. For a lusty, healthy, dashing ‘young’ man (well, I was once) who had never even been in hospital this news came as quite a shock. But the young Spanish doctor said surgery was advised in my case – I could have radiotherapy, he said, but in my case surgery was recommended to completely remove the prostate and then it couldn’t come back. My lovely, supportive wife Anne and I stumbled out of the hospital, tried to put ourselves back together and look forward. A further scan soon revealed the cancer hadn’t spread, and it seemed they had mercifully caught it early (bless them). A few pre-operation hurdles were put in place – ECG, blood tests, x rays, anaesthetist to name a few –before the big day which soon came: May 4th Operation2016. done, four days in hospital, then back out into the real world with a catheter in to help weeing, and some clips holding the four little cuts that enabled keyhole surgery to take out my prostate effectively. It all went well in retrospect. Two weeks later back at our local clinic I had the clips and catheter removed and – to my great surprise and delight I was virtually ‘dry’ from then on, weeing faster and more directly than for Whenyears.
I went for the final check at Torry hospital it seemed as though I’d made a complete recovery. No-one can ever tell me anything bad about the Spanish Health Systemputting it mildly they saved my life – a very sincere thank you to everyone concerned. So that day in Mouvember 2015 when I proudly rode all around Murcia with all the other two-wheeled nuts, complete with DJ and moustache, little did I think that shortly afterwards I would be actually be having my own prostate out in such a direct and positive manner. Viva Espana! I was so sad to read recently that the great Terry Wogan died of Prostate Cancer six years ago. This was a man who made such a difference to many peoples’ lives - ordinary folks like me, listening in to his early morning radio show as I sped up and down the UK motorways. It is said he didn’t know he had it, complaining of a bad back when missing Children In Need , and died within three weeks of diagnosis. That is the nature of this very serious disease. PS There have been a lot more ‘developments’ in my case since the above and I intend to slowly bring you up to date in future despatches - but not for now. In the meantime you men PLEASE get checked out – and ladies – PLEASE get your man to the docs before it becomes too late. Thanks for listening.

TOP TEN EURO FINISH FOR SPAIN
In the team event out of 17 countries, the men finished a very creditable 5th behind Scotland,England,Ireland,Wales and Israel. The women finished in 11th position.Overall,Spain finished 9th. Once again, grass proved to be a big problem for Spain.Illness also affected the squad and didn’t make things any easier. The men did very well and could have qualified in at least 2 of the disciplines. That aside, the players could not be faulted for their efforts for which they can be very proud.A lot of experience was gained at the championships, which will serve Spain well in the future. Next year,in April,Spain will be entering a new mixed pairs tournament which will be hosted in Tenerife, and the World Indoors Championships in Warilla. There is also the World Championships being held in August in the Gold Coast,Australia. Those competitions are over and above the normal test matches Spain will be involved in.
Apart from the foreign (grass) surface, Spain also had to contend with illness throughout the squad. By Graham Cathcart
In the Triples,Craig Lewis,Tom Rogers, and Graham Cathcart got off to a great start winning their first game comfortably. However,in their second game, they put themselves up against it by losing against the Netherlands,a game they should have won. That meant they had to beat at least one of the top two seeds in the group (England and Scotland). It wasn’t to be.Whilst they won every other one of their matches comfortably, they couldn't overcome either Scotland or England. They too finished 3rd in their Ingroup.the fours,Graham Shoots,Craig Lewis, Graham Cathcart and Pete Bonsor experienced misery in their first game against France which, once again that meant they had to beat at least one of the top two seeds – Ireland and Scotland – to qualify. The way they were playing, they looked like they could do exactly that and indeed,it proved to be the case when,in their second game, they took on and beat Ireland by one Thereafter, theyshot. only lost one other game, which was against Scotland. With results not going in their favour elsewhere, they finished in third place, just one point behind Ireland.

IN THE WOMENS DISCIPLINES –Carol Broomfield played in the singles and got off to a flying start winning 2 of her first 3 games, losing to England.Carol was playing well and was in with a shout of doing very well in her section. Unfortunately, come day 2 Carol started suffering from the same illness that had blighted some of the other squad members and had to struggle through the second Despiteday. this Carol still managed to give a very good account of herself, finishing 6th in her group. In the pairs, triples and fours, unfortunately, with Lisa,Carol,Debbie all suffering from illness, the teams struggled badly and couldn’t fulfil their potential, despite Gillian coming in to substitute for various players at different times. In the pairs, the women finished 4th,6th in the triples and fours.
IN THE MENS DISCIPLINESTom Rogers, who played in the singles, was drawn in a hard section. He got off to a great start, winning 2 out of his 3 games on the first days play, but then came unstuck. Playing against some excellent opponents Tom ended up finishing 9th. In the Pairs Graham Shoots and Pete Bonsor, were up against it as Pete had to play whilst being ill. They narrowly lost their first game against Guernsey which was to prove costly. Having played very well together, they finished 3rd in their group.
WOMEN Carol Broomfield (Singles and Pairs), Debbie Colquhoun (Pairs and Triples),Lisa Bonsor (Triples and Fours),Hazel Brown (Triples and Fours),Jenny Thompson (Triples and Fours) and Gillian Atkinson The(Substitute)squadarrived 3 days early in order to get much-needed practice on the grass greens. It took a day or two for some of the players to adapt to playing on grass. Playing on grass always tends to cause difficulty for Spain,as it does other countries who constantly play on carpet. What made it all the worse, though, was, surprisingly, the condition of some of the greens at TheyNorthfield.proved to be very heavy and in some cases, almost unplayable. This was mainly caused to the greens not being used for nearly 2 years due to COVID.But it was what it was and the players all tried 100% to adapt as best they could. Aside from the foreign surface,Spain also had to,unfortunately, contend with illness throughout the squad. This led to at various times, players being unable to play OR play whilst feeling very unwell. Spain’s main target for the championships was to finish in the top 10 in the team event and push for,if not qualify for the Semi finals in a couple of disciplines. In general terms, all targets were met,but with a bit of luck it could have been a whole lot better.

Thader were now in the ascendancy, with Pedro Juan hitting post on 18 mins, then from next attack, the same man forced the visitor's keeper to make a good save.
