As the vintage revival rolls on recently sold items at ‘Annie in Attic’ include a couple of ‘boom boxes’ and a selection of 70s stereo record players. Well, it stands to reason that with such as resurgence in vintage vinyl and (she says – jumping the trend gun) cassette tapes – it’s no surprise that there has been a steadily increasing demand for the necessary and authentic equipment to play them. In my humble opinion a DVD with cheap, plastic casing that inevitably snaps within a couple of uses can never replace the wonderful album covers, artwork and lyric booklets that adorn the black, vinyl circle of sounds that make up a bona fide

These were the days when bands and musicians had control over their output and marketing wasn’t left to the sponsors or record companies but were an integral part of the ‘concept’ album; a living, breathing work of art in itself. Artwork, photography, lyrics and presentation all combined to provide the musical escapism in which the band and their ardent followers were so keen to immerse themselves in.

A 1966 acetate of the Velvet Underground and Nico recently fetched over $25K (!) on eBay – it may be time to dust off your vintage vinyl pop

The Vintage Rag Mag Introduce Our Front Cover Company Hatastic! Chloë Haywood (Designer of Hatastic!) has always had an interest in fashion or ‘dressing up’ as she would call it, and this was confirmed when she won Young Clothes Show Designer of the Year when she was only 16. She designed and made a simple wraparound skirt from a patchwork of vintage materials found in the attic at home, and adorned it with beads and sequins. Leságe, one of the judges, himself offered her an opportunity to study at his school in Paris at the time.

This love of vintage fabrics, and ‘all things glittery’, is something she has never grown out of, and her desire to rejuvenate and transform the old, unused and unloved,
into something strangely beautiful is essentially the ethic of Hatastic! Nowadays, this would fashionably be called ‘upcycling’. Hatastic! was founded in March 2009 after Chloë designed and made a few different pieces for herself to wear at the five weddings she was to go to that year, and was then commissioned to make a headpiece for a bride and her two bridesmaids. There was no turning back. In her first year she won a competition called ‘Fashioning Technology’ where she designed a headpiece using old wires, scart leads and a kettle lid. Chloe’s’ premiere collection ‘Recreation’ was then launched at
Alternative Fashion Week in 2010 - a series of ten headpieces made from vintage games or toys. She went on to show this at Brighton Fashion Week, and consequently was featured in The Times, Cosmo and OK Magazine and countless blogs. Her new collection ‘L’air du temps’ – Spirit of the Times, is another ten piece collection of hats steamed and reworked into shape and then adorned with vintage remnants, jewellery and millinery foliage. Fenwick of Bond Street have confirmed they’ll be stocking this in Spring 2012. The Candy Collection, which

launched in January 2012, has already been seen on the likes of Keisha Buchanan launching her solo career after her many years with the Sugarbabes, and the collection has been selected to be shown at Alternative Fashion Week in April 2012.

Recently, Chloë has been invited by the British Council to be the only British milliner in the ethical Green Closet Show, at Milan Fashion Week February 2012. Eight British designers have been selected and she’ll be showing alongside Vivienne Westwoods new range of ethical handbags. She will be showing her Cold Cocktail Collection AW12 which are reworked vintage mohair headpieces adorned with vintage jewellery in
gorgeous deep jewel colours. Nominated as Accessory Designer of the Year 2011, she has also been working on a couple of projects featured in a book called ‘101 Things to Do with Glitter’ (published 2012). How to look like a War-time Lovely! Ensure your skin is prepped in a natural tone – Bronzers & fake tans are a big no-no! Finish your foundation with dusting of powder to give that beautiful matt finish that the ladies loved so much in the Forties! Add a natural Rose or Peach
Eyeshadows were worn in subtle shades of ivory, soft lavender, light blues and socket lines defined in neutral shades such as grey. The lash line was defined with a subtle black liner but not as dramatic as seen in the Fifties though! Brows were neat and naturally full so add a touch of definition to your brows. The best way to do this is to take a slanted brush and an eyeshadow that is two shades away from your hair colour (darker if fair, lighter if dark) and add small strokes that imitate hairs. Lips were worn red – most women favouring orange-based reds. The Forties were a truly feminine era for hair with Victory Rolls and Curls being the popular look. We get asked all the time how to perfect the perfect Victory Roll but once you know how to do it, it’s very easy! Our tip is for first of all, have plenty of patience! Section your hair in whatever way you prefer to wear your parting. Add a bit of volume by back combing the section and smooth out with some smoothing cream. Add a spritz of strong-hold hairspray, as this will help to keep the roll’s shape. Then slowly roll the hair into itself and secure to the head with grips. To finish, another spritz of hairspray and add some finishing spray to add some shine.

When I was 13, my optician looked at me sadly and said “I hate to have to say this, but I think it looks like you’ll have to wear your glasses permanently now”. I don’t think that he realised that I saw this as the opening of a whole new world of possibilities.

For me, 1950s fashion is defined not only by the beautiful dresses, but by the iconic cat eye style glasses (but maybe that’s just because I’m a speccy geek).
There is something so stylish and sophisticated about vintage frames that look great with just about anything. Although I have mainly stuck to my trusty opticians for my glasses, they do not stock any v intage style frames. However, I also love giantvintage.com, which has a great range of retro style glasses and sunglasses. For really special hand- picked vintage frames, I definitely recommend Auntie

The Vanity Box Talk With ReeRee Rockette This Month we met the inimitable ReeRee Rockette of Rockalily Lipstick. This sassy entrepreneur has produced a vintage inspired lipstick range which makes the path into Red lipstick as easy as buying a loaf of bread. Her lipstick bear great names Hot Rod Red and Pompadour Pink-oh yes she has more than just reds in her range. Short Listed for Best Lipstick in The Handbag Beauty Awards, Cosmopolitan Magazine say her lipsticks are ‘Perfect for Pale Girls’. VB:Tell me how the Rockalily idea came about? RR: I started Rockalily Lipstick at the beginning of 2011. It came about from wanting to create a brand that spoke to me, and make buying a red lipstick easier. It grew from my blog (which used to be called Alternatively Lovely) and it has been such an exciting year! I wanted a career change, and I wanted to work with my own skills and passions. I had been a teacher and school librarian before that, and had just decided, that despite Collectif Clothing enjoying my job, it wasn’t the life I wanted for myself. Rockalily Lipsticks are about making women feel fabulous, and I love being able to help in someway to make that happen! www.collectif.co.uk
VB: How do you come up with a new shade? RR: I start with what I want to wear, and then listen to what other people are asking me for. I don’t have many shades (to make choosing easier) so I have to really be sure before releasing a new shade! VB: What are your Vintage influences and personal style? RR: My family like vintage things, so I have grown up with various vintage inspirations without really realizing it. My step-dad has a blog that he loved, which is about the French Resistance (http://resistancefrancaise.blogspot.co.uk/ ) and Mother Rockette definitely has a love of the 1950s. Personally, I have always been fascinated with World War II, as well as the 1950s, but I love most vintage that relate to women. My own style is much more of a mixture of looks - 1940s and 50s, and more modern rockabilly. Overall, I just appreciate effort, I like to look as though I have made an effort. VB: What is next for Rockalily? RR: Something very exciting! It’s still top secret unfortunately! But Rockalily is a brand that can grow and extend, and I hope to show that very soon.

Ingredients: 12oz S R Flour 3oz Butter 3 tble spns Black Treacle 16 floz Milk 6 oz Caster Sugar 2 teaspoons Ginger Powder 1 teaspoon Bi-card of Soda

Square Tin 9” square 1.5” deep. Lined if it is not non-stick.
“This is an economical recipe which will also keep well”
E STEP ON Mix together all dry ingredients except bo-card. Melt fat and treacle. Heat 12 fl0z of milk but do not let it boil. Add to butter and treacle.
STEP TWO
Add to the dry ingredients and beat to a smooth mixture. Warm remaining 4oz milk, before it boils add 1 teaspoon of bi-carb and stir until frothy.
EE STEP THR Add this finally to mixture and mix well. Then pour this into a lined or non-stick tin.
R STEP FOU Bake for 30 - 35 minutes until firm to touch oven 180 or fan 170, Gas mark 4.
