Annie Opens Her Vintage Boutique In Balham! Happy New Year folks… and where, my I ask, did 2011 go? Anyhoo…2012 has already proven extremely eventful and crazily busy for Annie as the vintage master plan has moved forward and we’ve opened a vintage boutique in Balham, South London named ‘Annie in the Attic’! Follow me on Twitter - @AnnieAtticVtg After searching for the right place for what feels like ages, as luck would have it, we found the perfect first floor space in Balham High Road to provide a bang-on setting for some vintage indulgence... Everything has happened very quickly and within just a few weeks we are officially open for business and looking fabulous. ‘Annie in the Attic’ aims to cater for most vintage tastes and is particularly well-stocked with 60s, 70s and 80s items, some rare finds and some bright, bold and dare I say more outrageous items that time forgot. We’re talking polka-dot puffball skirts and matching jackets - oh yeah -and more padded shoulders than you can shake a filo-fax at.

Prices are customer friendly and range from a few pounds right through to ‘investment’ pieces from vintage icons such as Ossie Clark, Jean Varon, Biba and even
early Manolo Blahnik. The newly opened space has a departmental arrangement housing festival dresses, day dresses and separates. For the guys we have set aside a vintage Vinyl Corner which hosts an array of vinyl from 40s jazz to 80s electro, stereo equipment, boom boxes, menswear, vintage briefcases, satchels and luggage. For budding vintage brides Annie in the Attic has a range of over 20 amazing vintage wedding dresses, plus a select range of veils, headdresses and other accessories. We understand how important finding ‘that’ dress is, so the whole space can be exclusively yours by appointment if you’d prefer to come in privately (BFFs and doting mothers welcome) have a glass of fizz and try on some beautiful dresses. If you regularly read my blog in The Vintage Rag Mag you will know that
I’m a big fan of trend led vintage, so I have put together an area to showcase items for sale that reflect best the season’s hottest trends and looks. As if that wasn’t enough to tempt you over for a leisurely browse there are a number of vintage furniture items on sale. We are also hosting a ‘Mother’s Ruin’ vintage tea party soon and Time Out popped over this week for a quick peek - phew! So, please pop in and say hello …we would love to see you.

ASOS Marketplace joined us for an exclusive interview! Vintage Rag Mag: Hi Samantha! We at The Vintage Rag Mag absolutely love ASOS Marketplace and wanted to introduce you to our readers… So where should we start? Tell us a bit about what you do at ASOS Marketplace?

Samantha: I have the lovely job of working with the Vintage sellers on the site. So, if you apply for a Vintage boutique, it’s me you will be talking to (lucky you, hey?). I’m here to help you get from application to live on the site, and once you are live, I’m here anytime you need me. I also spend time looking for delicious new Vintage boutiques for the site, so you might find me diving head first into a pile of clothes at a Vintage fair. I love meeting the people behind the boutiques on the site so I try to visit as many as I can.
VRM: I could not do your job I would be buying everything possible, do you ever get like that? Samantha: Absolutely. Unfortunately showing restraint is not my forte. One of the elements I love the most about the site is being able to see so many different eras of clothing and deciding what style & era suits me best. As all the products are shot on people you can take inspiration from the whole sha-bang, starting with the hair and make-up, through to the clothing and accessories. It’s ALL about the styling! VRM: How long has ASOS Marketplace been running and have things changed at all over the period of starting up and where you are now? Samantha: We turned one at the end of 2011, which we celebrated as
a (small but perfectly formed) team in usual birthday style – down the pub. There is just so much more product available on the site now, so we can offer our customer more choice than ever. The photography coming through is just beautiful & gives us a lot to work with and lots of ways to feature boutiques across the site. We are also getting to know the UK Vintage community a lot better than was possible previously which is super exciting! VRM: How did ASOS Marketplace start? Samantha: The idea had been kicking around at ASOS for quite a while. We wanted to offer people a platform where anyone and everyone can sell fashion, within a true fashion environment. The site lends itself to vintage beautifully, but it also houses new and
pre-owned pieces. VRM: From our understanding you don’t only have amazing vintage sellers, what else can we find on ASOS Marketplace? Samantha: If it’s fashion, you can sell it. Simple as that. We have new pieces from some amazing Independent Labels and Emerging Designers, we have wardrobe recyclers and we have Vintage. VRM: What are the benefits of buying through ASOS Marketplace? Samantha: You are supporting the Independent Labels and the growing businesses which is lovely. Plus, your item is likely to be a little more unique, particularly if it’s Vintage. No more “OMG, that girl is wearing the same outfit, we have to leave” drama. VRM: Let’s flip the coin, what are the benefits

of selling on ASOS Marketplace and how easy is it to get involved? Samantha: Couldn’t be easier. You can either opt for a basic account, or you can run your own boutique. We provide the platform for you to sell on and the traffic to the site is huge. Plus, there are actual real life people on our side listening to your ideas *waves*. VRM: We love your people’s runway section on the website, the photography is fantastic. What is the idea behind the people’s runway? Samantha: It’s a showcase of the best photography from across the site. The photography rules are that the image must be shot on a real person in a real setting. This is what sets us apart from other selling platforms and avoids any over-edited imagery. It’s where I look if I’m in a style rut and need a little outfit inspiration.

Having A Vintage Wedding? Here Are The Beauty Queens Top Tips. Remember to not look too different! You don’t want to give your Groom a shock when you walk down the aisle! Remember he fell in love with you for the way you look so don’t suddenly change your image on your big day! The best way to think is that you want to look like you but just a more exaggerated version! Upgrade your day-to-day look !You do have to strike the right balance between looking recognisable & not just looking like you do every day! Remember this is your special day and you will be having lots of photos taken. If you usually opt for a “vintage” look, why not add some false lashes or go for a brighter lip colour, just to make it a little more special. Also, if your hair is short and can’t really change your style, add a spritz of shine spray to make your locks look extra glossy- it will make you feel you have paid more attention to it despite no changing the overall style. Trials are essential! Whether you are booking a professional makeup / hair stylist or doing it yourself, it is essential you trial your look out first. This will cut back any stress on the big day and also ensure you get the exact look you are after. We advise booking a trial 6 weeks (at the latest!) before the big day.
Make sure your bridesmaids are comfortable! If you love Vintage but your Bridesmaids prefer a different style, they may not be very comfortable being forced into something they don’t like, thus resulting in miserable faces in the photos! If you want Vintage bridesmaid dresses, perhaps let the ‘maids where they’re usual make-up & hair styles. Unhappy bridesmaids = stressful Wedding Day! Last Summer, the lovely Jo Wilson was looked after by us for her special day. Here she explains why she opted for a Vintage wedding: “I do not think I could have ever felt connected to a ‘traditional’ wedding & I knew from the start that it wasn’t the direction I wanted to go in. Our aim was not to plan the stereotypical ‘beautiful day’, which you’ll see over and over again in the wedding magazines, but to create a day that completely represented us. It HAD to involve pin ups, tea, swallows, guitars and polka dots! Growing up I spent a lot of time with my Nan and Grandad. Thankfully they introduced me to all the classic old Hollywood films and this was the catalyst for my love of all things vintage. I know I could never be as elegant as Deborah Kerr or as beautiful as Ginger Rogers - but dammit, for my wedding I was going to try! “ “If I wear makeup you can pretty much guarantee I’ll opt for black eyeliner and red lipstick. If I had turned up in neutral bridal make up Alex would have just laughed at me because he knows that’s not who I am. But although biscuits, pies and muffins are always fabulous treats, nothing has caught on quite like the wonderful cupcake. They seem to have a strange quality that makes them the most stylish comestible available. Not only do they adorn our cake stands in all their glory, but they also proudly decorate all manner of everyday item such as stationary and jewellery.

Cupcakes have taken the vintage world by storm, and it’s not surprising seeing as
the swirly frosting decorations that we love so much are believed to have been introduced in the early ’50s. Maybe part of the cupcake’s allure is this fabulous fondant frosting; indeed it seems to have enticed people into the path of these gorgeous treats. Trendy cupcake shops, stalls and cafes have popped up everywhere, including a new one just at the end of my road called Sweet and Floral! Some of my favourites include Vintage Teatime, St Jude’s Cupcakes, and of course Christina’s delightful cakes that make the Vintage Tea Party and Gift Fair at the Boogaloo so special.

The cupcake has become a popular motif used for things like jewellery. Inspired by the cupcakes I have seen (and eaten) in the past, I set out to make a few of my own… From their American origins in the early 1900s, through eggless recipes used during rationing, right up until the present day, cupcakes remain a firm favourite. Oh, and of course, what better gift for your Valentine than a lovely little cupcake?

An Introduction To The Vanity Box Verity and Gemma are hair and make up artists specialising in vintage looks and was born from this love of the glamour and drama of the styles of bygone eras with particular interest in 1930s- 1960s looks. They can be found prepping and primping Retro Goddesses throughout the UK and Europe for at Weddings, Vintage Fairs, Weekenders and styling for great vintage clothing companies such as Vivien of Holloway, Lady K Loves and Outerlimitz.
The Eyes Have It! Let’s talk about eyeliner. Eyeliner is our essential make up item for a vintage look. There is no other product which will suggest the era you are emulating more than eyeliner. Whether you are aiming for a smokey 1920s inspired look or perfect polished 1950s glamour; eyeliner is the magic ingredient that pulls the look together. When you think of classic Vintage make up icons like Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Marylin Monroe they all wore great eyeliner. So where do you start? Let’s determine which eyeliner is best for the look you want. Pencil or Kohl Liners- These come in various formulations, soft are easy to blend but you may find you need to reapply frequently. Great for sketching or plotting out before committing to a liquid line. Excellent for lining your water line for a 70s or 80s look. Great colour options can be used for defining eyebrows and adding colour trends without going overboard. Try Topshop Make Up Eye Kohl £4.00. (insert image of topshop kohl liner) Liquid Liner/Felt Pen Liner - Comes in a pot with a dip brush/applicator or in a felt tip pen. Precision liner for sharp defined flicks and ticks, great for 50s starlets and 60s kittens. Can be hard to use at first practice makes perfect. Also good for drawing shapes on the face- flowers for that Woodstock look or false eyelash lines like Penelope Tree or Twiggy. Revlon Colourstay Liquid Eyeliner £6.50 or Topshop Make up Felt Pen Liner £6.50. (insert image of revlon liquid eyeliner.) Gel or Cream Liner- Usually in a pot, apply with an angled brush or small pointed liner brush. Great consistency, can last for hours, easier to work with than liquid eyeliner also great for drawing shapes on the face. Comes in variety of colours. Great for 50s and 60s eyes. Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Collectif Liner £4.99. Clothing

Cake Liner- A very old fashioned formula of a pressed powder to which you add water and blend into a paste and apply with a brush. Referred to as Spit Cake this is the forerunner to all other eyeliner formulas however water is preferable to spit! You can make this to the consistency you prefer from liquid to thick cream. Lasts a long time as it will not dry out as liquid and cream can. Try Illamasqua Eyeliner Cake in Mislead £15.50. If you have ever struggled with attaining that perfect cat eyeliner here is a trick for you to use. This can be used on any eye shape. Using a sharp pencil at the outer corner of your eye draw a straight vertical line towards your eyebrow. I am using black so you can see but you may choose to use a lighter colour so it is easily covered or rubbed away if you make a mistake. Next following the line of your lower water line draw a line from the outer corner of your eye towards the end of your eyebrow. Now draw a line that connects the two horizontally you should have a small triangle resembling a golf flag. Using liquid, gel or cream liner go over the flag shape, pulling the corner up as far as you want- the higher you go the more 60s it will look. Finally starting at the inner corner finely line your eye sticking close to the lash line, thicken the line gradually to join the flag at the outer corner.
Tips for success! 1.Practice makes perfect- Swirling and flicking the brush or applicator on the back of your hand or on paper will train your hand to draw smoother lines. 2. Don’t worry about mistakes- Flick has gone off course? Dip a cotton bud in a tiny amount of moisturiser and carefully clean it up. 3. To make eyelashes look longer, try using a pencil to line under your upper lashes- this takes some practise and patience but the results are beautiful.

The Perfect Rockin’ Look Rockabilly is a popular style of music from the 1950s, combining features of rock ‘n’ roll and bluegrass (hence the name, which combines the words ‘rock’ and ‘hillbilly.’) Rockabilly started out as an underground subculture music before the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 1950’s. It was then revived in the 1980’s with bands such as The Stray Cats and The Polecats. Now in 2012 the rock ‘n’ roll scene is bursting at its seams with great new bands, incredible reproduction clothing, and gorgeous people who are head over heels for rock n’ roll. It is always great to have the original finery, a real treasure from the past, but buying vintage clothing can be hard. The size is wrong, it’s not in the best condition, you love it but it costs way too much or you go back to buy it and its gone! Vintage reproductions are the way forward. Vintage reproductions are made from vintage patterns. I have lots of reproductions, it’s easier to find clothes for my shape and in the right size and you tend to have more of a choice. This month I’m going show you how to get the perfect rockin’ look, and show you some very cool reproductions! Hair - Pin Curls, Victory Rolls and that classic Bettie fringe. Those are the elements to some good rockin’ hair, if you are using at least one of those elements then you are there, if you are feeling experimental then try all three! Lucky for us we are not in the 50’s and have the amazing internet and the glorious YOUTUBE, where you can find pages of vintage hair tutorials. Everyone has different hair techniques, it’s just a matter of finding out which is best and easiest for you. In this photo we have the beautiful SINderella Rockafella with some classic 50’s hair Search for Sinderella’s hair tutorials on YouTube, I am loving her Victory Roll tutorial. If tutorials are not for you, one on one classes are available. There are companies such as Lipstick and Curls, and the Powder Puff Girls, and the Vanity Box. Lipstick - A rockin’ girl does not leave the house without her red lipstick. You can’t go wrong with the classic red. Now some of you may be thinking that red can be scary or is too extreme. I believe there is a red for everyone, its a bold color that shouts confidance and beauty. It can change your look from ok to hot in 30 seconds. Remember use a lip liner, it will give you clean defined lines, and
Accesories - What girl does not love an accessory? I like to leave the house with red lippy, earrings and a hair flower, it makes me feel good. Why should you not feel good too? Jeans - Don’t be scared of high waisted jeans, they look knock out! They sinch in the waist and make a girls figure look very vavavoom! Topping: Pineapple Rings Glace Cherries Walnuts Halved 2oz Butter 2oz Brown Sugar Sponge: 5oz Soft Margarine 5oz Caster Sugar 2 Eggs 6oz Self Raising Flour Few Drops Vanilla Ess 3 Tbspns Milk

E STEP ON
Cream together margarine and sugar until soft and light. Whisk eggs and beat gradually into the mixture. Sieve the flour and mix the vanilla essence with milk. Fold the flour and milk alternatively into the creamed mixture.
STEP TWO Grease a 8” cake tin or oven proof dish. Melt butter and pour into a tin and top with 2oz brown sugar.

Arrange a design of pineapple, walnuts and cherries on the butter. Top with sponge mixture.
R STEP FOU Bake in the centre of the oven mark 4 / 170 degrees fan for about an hour. Turn out when ready to serve. Hot or cold with cream.
