The year is 77’ and the country teeters on the brink of anarchy. Punk is everywhere and our sensibilities are being shocked by spiky haired teenagers wearing slashed T-Shirts held together with safety pins. Whilst the No 1 hits by Donna Summer and The Jacksons paint a picture of a fun and wholesome youth culture this was far from the reality of London’s streets the streets and the ‘Punk’ culture was born from angry and resistant youths facing a hard hitting recession comparative of today’s. If you’re down with this movement then keep an eye out for original items at fairs... they will be rare though as most items were handmade or sourced mainly from dedicated outlets – particularly along King’s Road, Chelsea. Punk has been all over the catwalks this season, with pioneers such as Vivienne
Westwood (my absolute, all time, fave designer and one time partner of Malcolm McLaren – the impresario behind the punk movement) reverting to her original edgy designs. Designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Burberry, Jean Paul Gautier and Balmain have also embraced the punk influence and translated them into designs for next season. Paradoxically, it seems that this anti-fashion and establishment movement is now being translated into houte couture clothing for the wealthiest of consumers. One buyer for a high-end retailer told The Observer “The big designers think it’s ‘street’ to sell punky clothes to the super-rich. Actually, it’s pretty irresponsible in tough times for anyone to encourage the DIY approach to fashion that punks had in 1977. No
one spent any money. I don’t think I could disagree more! What does vintage represent if not an antidote and rebellion to mass consumerism? Meanwhile, we await the inevitable ‘watered down’ versions to hit our high streets this summer. Safety pins, short kilts, bin bags and gaffer tape numbers that are slightly easier to pull off. 35 years ago, the Sex Pistols hired a boat and floated it down the Thames to mock the Queens Jubilee playing ‘God Save the Queen’ and this time around you can bet your bin bags there will be a crowd of punks somewhere in the crowd listening to the infamous song on their Sony Walkmans. With Urban Outfitters, Topshop, Jack Wills and just about every other vintage inspired fashion brand opening up huge stores in Guildford recently, the busy town center seems is just crying out for a healthy dose of the real vintage. This brand new fair is going to give it exactly that;up to 40 hand picked stalls bringing ‘the best selection of vintage clothing accessories and homewares from London dealers’ to a venue bang on Guildford’s busy cobbled high street. As well as offering everything we have come to expect from high quality vintage fairs, the organisers (Kingfisher fairs), have clearly paid attention the all important details.

The mandatory tea room is being run by professional caterers, with not only cupcakes and vintage crockery, but a whole array of other sweet treats, plus traditional english
savoury baked goodies for lightlunches. The fair will also be a platform for musical talent with‘polka-dot-pop’ sensation Natalie Ross, indie songbird Jose Vanders and DJs from South London’s Out & Down collective confirmed, plus special guests to be announced. The usual make shift vintage styling stand has been given a new lease of life, with local professional vintage enthusiasts from Lucy Lou’s pop up parlour (Hair That Turns Heads. com) offering professional make over tasters in not only the usual 50s styling, but also on trend 20s, plus 40s and 60s hair and
make-up. Other unique touches include specialist stalls selling rare items such as unworn 1950s glasses frames, vintage designer wear, mens watches as well as menswear only fashion dealers. On top of all that, there will be a street style papping competition with prizes for the best dressed shopper, and free goodie bags for the first 50 people through the door. A note from the Rag Mag - this is one not to be missed!

The Vintage Rag Mag Introduces Vintage Rocks! As the compere took to the stage you couldn’t have squeezed another soul into north London’s rocking jukebox joint and vintage fair haunt The Boogaloo. ‘Vintage Rocks!’ organised and hosted by local boutique Rock Candy, featuring clothes from not only themselves but also Miniola, Forsaken Dreams, Colour Outside the Lines and A Room in My House, kicked off with a fantastic fashion show that took us through the decades starting with the 50s and bringing us right up to the early 90s.

The soundtrack, a brilliant mix of great Rock & Roll hits
of each era, went down a storm while gorgeous models strutted their stuff on the catwalk. With each brand giving us 2 or 3 of their best picks from each decade there was certainly something for everyone and it gave a brilliant showcase of fashions of the last 60 years. After the models had one last parade the crowd moved quickly out to the vintage market. Each of the traders involved had a fantastic selection of goodies for us as well as the outfits coming hot off the catwalk, many of which were snapped up as soon as they hit the rails!
For those with more stamina, Rock Candy organised 2 fantastic bands to follow; Dirty Velvet then, The Dash, both gave us a rocking set and were followed by a DJ playing classic tunes to finish off the night. We hear that Rock Candy are already planning the next event for September, we can’t wait! The first curl: The first ever eyelash curler was sold in 1923 and was called the Kurlash. Most people thought of it as a very complicated instrument and took about ten minutes to use! The Hollywood stars: The legends of Hollywood knew how much an impact false lashes made and would request extremely luxurious varieties such as ones made from mink, seal, sable and even human hair! Mysterious Marlena: Marlena Dietrich created her signature mysterious allure by placing individual lashes to the outer corners of her lids, enabling her eyes to look wider.

The Beauty Queens Talk Lashes Eyelashes have become the most beauty important item on the British woman’s list. With reports of sales in false lashes increasing by 249% in 2011 from the previous year! However, as many as you will know, they’ve been popular long before the TOWIE crew hit our TV screens! We Beauty Queens aren’t scared to admit we too have a mild obsession with eye lashes and love to wear a pair of falsies! Here’s a little insight into the history of lashes that you may not know....
Wartime didn’t stop the glamour: With the rationing of World War II, even make-up was affected by the shortages and mascara was hard to get hold of. Undeterred, women would use boot polish instead to create dark lashes! Lucky Elizabeth: Did you know that Elizabeth Taylor was born with a rare condition called Distichiasis, which caused her to have double set of eye lashes! Of course, this worked to her advantage and framed her famously, beautiful eyes. The Swinging 60’s: The Sixties saw a complete explosion of fashion and women began looking at different ways to wear their make-up. Twiggy became the poster girl of the era and would wear several pairs of false lashes at one time. To emphasis the eyes even further, girls would draw on lashes on the lower lash line. This is very easy to do, simply take sharpened eyeliner and imitate the existing lashes. The magic of Mr Uemura: Thought upon as the “King” of eyelashes, Shu Uemura created beautiful false lashes since the 60’s that have always been highly popular until this day. He also created his own design of eye lash curlers in 1991 that are regarded as the best on the market. Recycle your lashes! Not many people realise that you can re-use strip lashes after wearing them. However, it is only advisable to do so if you ensure you clean them after use with a gentle make-up remover and then store them in a sealed container – so dust / bacteria is kept at bay. The Vanity Box explore The New Vintage Look On April 10th The Vanity Box were proud to be part of fantastic charity fashion event The New Vintage Look. The fashion show celebrated some of the amazing vintage inspired fashions available and an incredible auction raised money for The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Trust who are raising funds for a new neo natal incubator. Bethan Soanes explains why she chose the charity, “Both my brother and sister were looked after at the Royal Brompton hospital as children suffering with had serious heart conditions. The event and auction were a way to say thank you for all they’ve done over the years.”
Lady K Loves, Outerlimitz, Playful Promises, Stockings and Romance, Scarlett Vintage Attire, B ooboo Kitty Couture and Oh Sew vintage. Hosting for the evening with sparkling wit and a beautiful voice Coco Dubois entertained the audience with an array of cabaret classics and did a sterling job of auctioneer- coaxing the highest prices for some fantastic prizes. Verity bid and won a pair of VIP weekend passes to The Retro Festival and a vintage Moonicure from Minnie Moons Vintage Nails! Half time entertainment was provided by Tempest Rose Burlesque with added confetti and the guests let loose to live band Knocksville. We had an amazing night, it was documented in style by the amazing Tigz Rice, Luke B Domingo, Sheradon Dublin, Dave Parson and BopFlix. Check out some of the photos from the evening. The Vanity Box were approached by Bethan and Sarah Bishop to provide hair and make up for the 12 models alongside another Vintage Rag Mag writer and make up artist Betty Flowers. Lipstick and Curls founder Amanda Moorehouse was also part of the grooming dream team for the evening. Bethan and Sarah wanted a super glamorous pin up make up look enhanced by multi-coloured crystals around the eyes. Hair was worn in detailed buns with front curls. Ingredients: 4 Eggs 1 Red Pepper 2 Medium Potatoes 3 Tblspns Olive Oil 1 Chopped Onion 1 Clove of Garlic Equipment: A frying pan
elette m O h is n a Sp “This recipe can be made your own by adding many other vegetables such as tomatoes, mushrooms or peas.”
E STEP ON
Peel or scrub the potatoes and slice thinly. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan. Put the potato slices in the pan with the chopped onion, red pepper and garlic.
STEP TWO
Cover the pan and cook until the potatoes are tender. Then beat the eggs lightly in a large bowl. When the potato and onion mixture is cooked add 1 more tablespoon of olive oil and turn the heat down to low.
EE STEP THR Pour the egg into the pan and mix together. The essence of this dish is slow cooking. It should take 20 minutes.
R STEP FOU When there is little liquid left turn the omelette over and cook for another 2 minutes.
