Local church to have guest preacher On Nov. 20, Prince of Peace Lutheran in Poland, will welcome Bishop Abraham Allende as guest preacher.

The Rev. Allende is bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Rev. Julianne D. Smith serves as pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland. Worship begins at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

Carlozzi Financial Services is again helping local families in need this holiday season. Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 10.4 million pounds of food in 2015 in the tri-county area. Last year, Carlozzi Financial Services collected $1,225 in monetary donations. Mark Carlozzi is hoping that this year will be even greater.

Newcomers group to meet Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will be having its pre-Thanksgiving luncheon at Johnnie’s in Boardman on Nov. 16 at 11:30 a.m. They will celebrate the season and what Thanksgiving means to members.

The program will be from the YMCAwhat they have available for the community. They will be specifically discussing their programs on exercise and the importance of that aspect in remaining healthy. They will also be meeting for Book Club on Nov. 17, where they will be discussing “Journey to Munich,” which is a mystery and deals with some of the issues in the late 1930’s with Nazi Germany. Roundtowners will be meeting in the evening of Nov. 30.

They will also be celebrating the holiday season on Dec. 14 with a luncheon, also at Johnnie’s at 11:30 a.m. Also happening in December will be the Needlework Group, Movie Club, Roundtowners and Birthday Club. The Poland library hosted a Halloween Painting Party for children in kindergarten through fifth-grade on Oct. 13.

Jan Luoma, instructor from Imagination ! Creative A rts Studios, instructed the children how to create a painting of an owl sitting on a tree branch. All of the children got their own canvas, brushes and other surprises to make their paintings.

Some children came with

t heir siblings while ot hers came with their friends. The painting activity gave them t he oppor t u n it y to spend bonding time with each other while making something they were able to take home.

The children sat at t heir seats and followed the directions from Luoma. There were drinks and snacks for the children to enjoy while the different layers of paints were drying. Many of the children were excited to finish their paintings and give them to Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci their parents and other family Leanna and Emma Boccieri painted their owls during the Oct. 13 Halloween members.

Hundreds of people went to Boardman Park on Oct. 14, 15 and 16 to carve pumpkins for the annual Great Pumpkin Carve-Out contest.

Pumpkin-carvers showed up with their families and friends to carve the perfect pumpkin. The event was created

more than 30 years ago and has grown to become bigger each year. More than 400 pumpkins are carved each year.

The event is weather-driven and the nicer the weather, the more people attend.

Families have turned this event into a tradition they attend each year. Aside from pumpkin carving, families could roast s’mores and hot dogs over a fire, enjoy food from food trucks, a rock wall and a bounce-around.

Boardman Park buys the pumpkins from a local grower

and allows a guest to pick out a pumpkin for a small donation.

During the judging on Sunday, there would be an award for each age group.

After the carve-out, families could enjoy a ride on the Haunted Family Hayrides on Oct. 14 and 15 or go trick-ortreating during the Boo Thru the Woods event on Oct. 16.

Several activities take place at Boardman Park throughout the month of October to celebrate Halloween and providing family-friendly activities to participate in.

‘Sleepy Hollow’ at PSHS

Get ready for a frighteningly funny classic American tale. This fall, the Poland Players from Seminary High School are presenting “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The play is the tale of Head SchoolMaster Ichabod Crane’s courting of the lovely and wealthy Katrina Van Tassel, and Brom Bones efforts to keep the woman he believes to be his. The entire town of Sleepy Hollow is drawn into the rivalry. Tickets can be purchased at the door beginning at 6:15 p.m. and are $8 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens. Poland Middle School students in the seventh- and eighth-grade STEM Club visited Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC) on Oct. 18 for a special program called the Cutting Edge Manufacturing Event. The group of 23 students were among some 700 from school districts across the valley, who enjoyed the interactive experience with representatives from local manufacturing companies.

During the event, students learned from various speakers and participated in hands-on projects with local manufacturers. Approximately a half dozen local companies participated in the event, representing careers in hydraulics/pneumatics, machining, welding and engineering. The team placed third at the Bothwell Cup and placed second at the Madison Invitational to cap this year’s campaign. These young men complete their five-year travel careers with a combined record of 77-28-4.
