The Vindicator has been proud supporter of our HBA Parade of Homes and the HBA Home and Garden Show over the years and our success is partly due to that relationship. Valley consumers have looked to the paper as a source of information on every level. Most of us can remember reading the ‘funnies’ with our parents and grandparents. It was the only source to find the AMENT great sales at McKelvey’s downtown or what was going on at the Idora Ballroom! Though times have changed, The Vindicator’s commitment to the Valley has never wavered. The HBA is very much the same. Many of us who have grown up in the Valley and continue to stay here to raise our kids and make a living, have certainly seen the morphing of life here. We remember when they said what will the Valley do if the steel mills ever shut down? They did. We remember hearing what will happen if GM Lordstown ever shuts down. It did. Yet we still continue to do business here every day. Kids just started back to school to begin another year in their journey. Most us are still getting up and going to work in a productive yet ever-changing community. We are resilient. I believe we are some of the most resilient people across the nation. Here at the HBA we’ve seen so many changes over the years from our inception. The average price of newly constructed home in the 1940s was around $10,000; the lots were $2500. The 1950s were a booming time for the housing industry here in the Valley. In 1956, there were 2,284 new housing starts in the Mahoning Valley which equated to $30,054,295. To put that into perspective, 2018 housing starts were 161. In 1956 the HBA held their first HOMEARAMA which included 12 homes that were open for 8 days. The Vindicator supported the HBA with a 22-page section just for the HOMEARAMA. The HBA also scheduled their 6th Annual Home and Garden Show for April 2-7 at the “newly renovated” Idora Park Ballroom. The median

price of a single family home was $15,900, but rose 14% to $18,000 in 1957. Building trade wages varied from $3.31 an hour for painters to $3.89 an hour for bricklayers. Times were good. Throughout the years, the HBA and the housing industry fluctuated with the economy in the Valley. It’s had some great years and some rough years, until in 2008 when the bottom dropped out for housing. Valley builders wondered what would happen next. Some went out of business, some moved to different parts of the country, but many acclimated to remodeling and continued to pull their local businesses through the tough years. Those that have weathered the storms of the Valley and the industry as a whole are some of the best businesses you’ll find and we’re proud to say many of them are HBA members. Quality craftsmanship and affordable pricing continues to be a trademark of the area. Fast forward to 2019. The average price of new home construction is approximately $228,500 and lots are few and far between. Though times are changing, the HBA remains a viable resource for consumer to find a builder, remodeler, landscaper, realtor, supplier, contractor and so much more! We’ve been in the Valley since 1945 and we continue to change through the generations. We are still committed to help our members through education, networking and lobbying for the industry. We are committed to bringing the best Home and Garden Show to the consumers every year-our next show in 2020 will be our 69th show! Our founding fathers in 1945 would have never guessed that the housing industry in 2019 would include social media, websites, apps and so much new technology. This type of deposit should be paid once a contract is signed by both you and the contractor. Illegitimate contractors will ask for cash or full payment before starting the job. Don’t do it. • Know exactly what you are paying for. Ask contractors you are interviewing to provide a complete breakdown of costs. Look for materials, labor, profit margins and other expenses. • Only make the final payment once you are satisfied with the work and have copies of the material receipts and lien releases from the contractor and subcontractor.
