Local Trick-or-Treat times and tips

Trick-or-Treat will take place in our local areas on Oct. 31.

Local times include: Austintown: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Boardman: 5-7 p.m.

Canfield: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Poland: 5-7 p.m.

This annual event can create fun family memories that you and your children will cherish forever, but it also should be a time of caution. Here a re a few tips from safekids.org to WRIGHT keep Trick-orTreat sa fe for your family.

1. Always make sure each member of your group is wearing bright/reflective clothing or carrying a lit flashlight or glow stick. This will help motorists better see your group once the sun sets.

2. Make sure to check the road in both directions, as well as keeping vigilant of cars backing up or pulling forward, before crossing the street. It is safest to cross at corners and using traffic signals and crosswalks when possible.

3. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no side-

walks, make sure you walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible.

4. Children under the age of 12 should not Trick-or-Treat alone at night without adult super v ision. Any groups of u n ac c ompa n ie d Tr ick-orTreaters should stick to familiar areas that are well-lit.

For t hose pa rents whose children have food allergy concerns, look for a teal pumpkin to denote homes with a foodfree treat.

Additionally, remember to carefully inspect your child’s candy or other goodies prior to allowing them to consume it. Any candy that appears to have been altered or has torn packaging or packaging with holes in it should not be consumed. It is up to a parent’s or guardian’s discretion to ensure the safety of their children during this and all holidays.

Drivers should also take extra precautions while driving during Trick-or-Treat times.

Any distractions should be silenced or minimized as much as possible. Vigilance should be observed after dark and in neighborhoods, where Trickor-Treaters will likely be walking.

Knights of Columbus to have dinner St Charles Knights of Columbus in Boardman will host a spaghetti and meatball dinner 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 in Fr. Haidet Hall.

GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7 The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Program serves up opportunities to learn tennis

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley and Buddy Up for Dow n Sy ndrome hosted a Buddy Up Tennis event on Sept. 24 at the Boardman Tennis Center.

People of all ages who have Down Syndrome were invited to participate in the Buddy Up Tennis program throughout the year. There are two or three Saturday sessions a month that occur in January through April, and then again in September through December. This is the third year the program has occurred at the Boardman Tennis Center and children as young as five years old to people who are young adults attend.

are Athletes and several people volunteer their time to be a Buddy. There are tennis players from high schools in the area like Canfield, Boardman, Poland and Ursuline. Members from the Youngstown State University tennis team also volunteer to work with the athletes.

Buddy Up Tennis gives people who have Down Syndrome the opportunity to learn while having fun. The program was originated in Columbus and is currently popping up more place around Ohio. This allows those with Down Syndrome to have a chance to try something they might not have been able to do otherwise.

“It is great for their exercise, it’s great for their socialization and they’re learning the basics of tennis,” said Olsen.

There will be other sessions in October, November and December that people can attend and volunteer for. The programs take place from 9:3011 a.m. on Saturdays. More information can be found about the program at BuddyUpTennis.com.

“It’s a really beautiful thing to see them all out here and interacting. We’re more alike than we are different. A bunch of people having a good time together,” said Olsen.

Scholarship committee to host bake sale The Mickey Schuster Scholarship Committee of Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, will host an election day bake sale on Nov. 8. A variety of baked goods and coffee will be sold, starting at 6:30 a.m.

GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area.

A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). The Youngest Flea hosted its monthly flea market next to the Covelli Center at Freeman Alley on Sept. 24.

The f lea market is hosted once a month and local and regional vendors are welcomed to set up a station to sell their items. There are vendors who sell hand-made jewelry, candles, collectables, clothing and many more items. There are

also food vendors who sell items they made locally.

The vendors are selected carefully to make sure they all have a true passion for what they make and what they sell to help invest in the growth of the Youngstown community. The flea market brings families together to shop, listen to music and enjoy food.

People from all over the Mahoning Valley attend the flea market to see if they can find anything that catches their eye.

The Youngstown Flea creates

opportunities for members of the community to showcase their talents and share them with others who may enjoy similar interests. Youngstown Flea also partners with different groups and organizations to help allow people of all ages, backgrounds and skill to support and be a part of the local community.

Boardman High School students and faculty celebrated their fourth annual “Yes Fest” on Sept. 30 with the help of several volunteers and organizations.

The high school’s assistant principal, Anne Bott, was the main organizer of Yes Fest and began her planning and gathering in the spring. The event was broken up into several sections for students in grades 7-12.

Boy Scouts consolidate into three councils The first quarter of the new year w ill be the start of an exciting new era for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Northeast Ohio. The BSA has enjoyed a long and rich history locally and recently announced that the volunteer leaders of five area Scouting councils voted this month to consolidate to three councils by early 2017.

The five area councils – the Greater Cleveland Council, headquartered in Cleveland; the Great Trail Council, headquartered in Akron; the Greater Western Reserve Council, headquartered in Warren; the Heart of Ohio Council, headquartered in Mansfield; and the Buckeye Council in Canton – will increase efficiency into to three councils to focus Scouting’s resources towards our mission of providing the a rea’s foremost yout h program of character development and values-based lead-

ership.

The remaining three counci ls w i l l be compr ised of: The Buckeye Council, w ith boundaries stretching from the Marion/Mansfield area to the eastern border of Ohio, a long Route 30 ; The Great Tra i l Counci l, encompassing the A k ron, Warren and Youngstow n communit ies ; and a new council, yet to be named, will be formed along L a ke Er ie f rom A shtabu la Count y to Erie Count y, incorporating the City of Cleveland.

“Many factors go into the decision to rea l ig n cou ncils, and the most important consideration is how we can best deliver Scouting to these communities,” said Todd Walter, BSA Area Director. “Our priority is to provide a strong Scouting program for more than 36,000 youth we serve across Northeast Ohio – and we can better accomplish this

with these five councils operating in a different manner.”

Key volunteer leadership from each of the five counci ls bega n meet ing ea rlier this year to discuss possibilities for making the delivery of Scouting program in these communities more efficient and sustainable. These discussions culminated in town hall meetings hosted in Akron, C a n f ield, C le vela nd, Mansfield, Marion and Wakeman in the month of August and council board including charter representatives votes in the month of September.

“The new structure will provide enhanced opportunities for our Scouts, more resources to recruit and support additional youth members and adult leaders, and far more opportunity to be innovative in making Scouting strong,” said Darr yl Dillenback, NE Ohio Sustainability Committee Chair. “We plan to build

on the exciting work we’ve done in our communities, including countless hours of com mu n it y ser v ice, thousands of lives impacted through camping programs and values-driven leadership development opportunities for the boys and girls we serve.”

There are exciting changes ahead and volunteer leadership across the councils are working to ensure a seamless transition for Scouts, parents, leaders and local volunteers. Our intent is programming and camping opportunities will remain the same for 2017, while the new council structures are formatted and leadership has the opportunity to evaluate all programs for 2018 and beyond.

Recording your personal history Join the Boardman library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the second of the workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Instructional handouts are included. Attend one or all of the workshops. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30.

“As my fourth year being involved in this, it keeps growing and changing to meet the needs of the kids, it’s never the same” said Bott.

The students had the opportunity to listen to Heidi Riggs, Chief Administrative Officer of Avlis, and David Kohout, founder of Talk is Cheap, Inc., speak about topics like drugs, alcohol and focusing on creating and continuing good characteristics

and habits.

After the students listened to the speakers, they made their way to the gymnasium to visit and speak with more than 50 volunteer organizations and more than 15 students organizations.

The students had the opportunity to sign up and volunteer with the different organizations.

“I’ve had a number of the community organizations be very excited. They had no volunteers then they walk out with a slate of 25 kids who are interested,” said Bott.

Students explored the gym and spoke with community or-

ganizations like Angels for Animals, Akron Children’s Hospita, Big Brothers Big Sisters and several others. They had the chance to talk to representatives from each organization and get an idea of what the organization is all about.

Yes Fest is a chance for students to not “just say no,” but to “say yes” to positive influences and different community services.

“I hope we keep doing it forever. It’s something that will evolve and continue to grow,” said Bott.

Happily Ever After Allison Davis • Ian Lanzillotti Allison Davis married Ian Lanzillotti Aug. 27. They reside in Cleveland, Tenn. The bride is the daughter of Linda and Murray Davis of Boardman. The groom is the son of Brenda Archer and Tom Lanzillotti, both of Tampa, Fla. The 6:30 p.m. ceremony took place at the B&O Station and was officiated by Rabbi Saul Oresky. A reception followed at the B&O. The couple plan to travel to Italy for their honeymoon to visit the hometown of the groom’s ancestors.

The bride wore her grandmother’s wedding crown for the ceremony. The bride’s sisters Marla, Suzanne and Laura Davis served as the bridesmaids. The flower girls were Mia and Sophie Lanzillotti, nieces of the groom.

The groom’s brother, Heath Lanzillotti, was the best man.

The bride graduated from Ohio State University with a master’s degree in creative writing and teaches composition and creative writing from Ohio State University with a doctorate in courses at Tennessee Wesleyan University and history and is a professor of history at TennesStanford University. Miss Hayden, Mr. Detwiler are engaged Emily Hayden and Raymond Detwiler, both of Austintown, are planning to marry Oct. 29.

John Keehner officiated, and the reception took place in the church hall. The parents of the bride are the late Patricia and Joseph Gorski Jr., and the parents of the groom are the late Jeanne and Matthew Niziolek.

Mrs. Niziolek graduated from ITT with a degree in data processing and accounting and attended Youngstown State University.

She is a retired Boardman schools employee. Mr. Niziolek also is retired.

The bride wore a sleeveless ivory lace and silk gown with the bodice covered in silver and rhinestones. The maid of honor was Monica Baytos, cousin of the groom. She was joined by bridesmaids Joan Guzy and Susan Scavelli, both sisters of the groom.

Boardman Park Halloween attendance hits record Boardman Park recently announced that the attendance for t he Ha l loween Fa m i ly Friendly Wagon Rides on Oct. 14 and 15 set an all-time record, with 3,000 visitors enjoying the wagon rides, pumpkin carving and several other activities.

The previous record was set in 2014, with 2,400 visitors.

They also saw record breaking numbers at the Boo Thru the Woods Event, tripling the number of trick-or-treaters from 700 in 2015 to 2100 this year. They strive to provide event s a nd prog ra m m i ng that are Family Friendly and through the success of this past Halloween weekend, it was evident the majority of the Park visitors were families, who enjoyed a variety of wholesome Halloween events together in a safe and friendly environment.

The park thanks the community for supporting these events.

This year’s winners were, in t he pre-school age g roup, first place - Aris Garrett and second place - Dominic Hertma n; in t he k inderga r ten t h roug h fou r t h-g rade age group, first place - Hunter Davanzo, second place - Joe Faunda and honorable mention - Joey Sharpe Bunosky; in the fifth- through eighthgrade age group, first place - Norah Bush, second place - Austin and Bradley Harrison and honorable mention - Ava Davanzo; and in the ninth-grade through adult age group, first place - Chuck Pangburn and second place Emily Ruthedge.

All the carved pumpkins are on display at the Park through Oct. 31.

Without the help of the nonprofit partners, Boardman Park would not be able to of-

fer three “Spookatular” weekends of Halloween events. The park thanks the 4-H Club of Mahoning County, and Boardman High School Key Club and P.A.N.D.A. for their service.

They will each share in the net proceeds from the Halloween events.

Boys cross country places fifth at regional championships The Boardman Spartan boys cross country team advanced to the OHSAA Regional Championship for the fourth time in the past six years, after placing fifth at the OHSAA Northeast District Championship at a wet and muddy Trumbull County Fairgrounds course.

Senior Chris Butler led the Spartans with an fifth place finish in a time of 16:31; he was

followed by senior Nathaniel Ams in 27th place with a time of 17:21. Freshman Mitchell Dunham was next at 30th overall in a time of 17:30. “Very happy for our seniors and excited for our program,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “In our district, with all these good teams and poor race conditions anything can happen-fortunately we ran well enough to qualify. Now we get to run at home next week and have a shot at getting to Columbus.”

The Lions Clubs International (LCI) Centennial Bus visited Boardman on Sept. 21 as part of tour of active Lions clubs in select communities. LCI’s International President Chancellor Bob Corlew met with Zone 7 volunteers to discuss the most critical service needs for the future as the organization marks its 100th anniversary. During the visit, the Zone 7 members shared their volunteer experiences, gave insight on the most critical needs and discussed how service should advance into the future.
