This timid little kitty is named Lestat. Lestat is a handsome gray/blue smoky guy. He is about 5-months-old. Lestat will definitely need someone to work with him to get over being scared. He should be the only cat in the household, at least for awhile, but he does get along with other cats at the shelter. He loves to play! Lestat’s ID number is A141087. Meet Lucky. She is a front paw declawed cat, about 6- or 7-years-old. She came in to Angels For Animals on Aug. 16. She doesn’t like other cats, so she would love to have a home of her own.

At the August meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association, scholarship checks were given to three students. Megan Krusel, a senior attending Penn State studying English, Scott Williams who is a senior at Youngstown State University studying Telecommunications and Mallory Allen who is attending Ohio State and studies Biomedical Engineering. The meeting took place at A La Cart in Canfield.

K of C to host pancake breakfast Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus 3930 will be sponsoring a pancake and sausage breakfast on Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the parish center, located at 4500 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. The menu consists of pancakes, sausage and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and it will be $3 for children 12 and under.

MCCTC flower shop opens The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October.

A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.

The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.

Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

STEM stations make learning fun

The Austintown library is introducing a new station for the children to get involved with STEM activities.

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics has become a subject that more and more younger children are becoming involved in, whether it be at school or on their own time. Austintown library’s children’s section will display two new STEM stations to explore every week for the month of September.

The first week, the library set up a tornado station with

a water-filled pop bottle and a scale station to balance different items. Every week, the two new experiments will be replaced with a new interactive activity for the children to engage with while learning new information.

Many of the activities will be made from materials that children and their families may be able to find around the house, making it easy for them to recreate the activities at home.

There was a lot of excitement at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on Aug. 26 as students worked together on a week long team building project based on their new way of learning at the school.

Students in the “Machine Team” and the “Academy of the Arts” are part of new academies in the school. The concept of academies is to bring together different career tech programs centered around project based learning (PBL) as well as incorporate all academic classes in the project.

T he “Mach i ne Tea m” is made up of the Engineering, Precision Machining, Auto Collision, Truck and Diesel and Welding programs. Their f irst project was centered around building a trebuchet to see how far they could launch a golf ball across a field. Each team was made up from students in each of the different machine team labs and given a packet of information with r u les a nd cer ta in materials and tools they could use.

Trebuchets of all shapes and sizes were made.

The winning team launched their golf ball 260 feet.

The senior students from each lab set up stations throughout the Joyce Brooks Center and the juniors had the opportunity to taste the food the Culinary seniors cooked, get pampered

by the senior Cosmetology students and get art-sy with the Creative arts seniors.

The common goal of both academies was to bring students from each of the team labs together to get to know each other as well as get introduced to the new PBL concept of learning and both teams accomplished just that.

Artist brings inspiration to Fellows Riverside Gardens

Fellows Riverside Gardens welcomed artist Visiliki (Lilian) Filippou to meet with people and display her artwork at the Weller Gallery on Sept. 3.

Filippou has been interested in art her entire life and started painting when she was 7-yearsold. She was born and raised in Athens, Greece and studied several topics about art during her time at the Vakalo Institute of Applied Fine Arts.

Lilian Filippou put up nature decorations at Fellows Riverside Gardens to go along with her nature paintings she has on display in the Weller Gallery through the end of November.

“I travel to many countries.

I’ve done 95 exhibitions in the past year,” said Filippou.

The gardens of Greece and her home in Ohio have inspired Filippou to create the artwork she has on display at Fellows. Filippou fell in love with the gardens at Fellows and the many different types of flowers inspire her to create several pieces of art.

Canada and New York are just a couple places that Filippou has enjoyed traveling to and looking and their art. She travels all over the world to look for inspiration and to show off her paintings.

Filippou enjoys painting outdoor portraits the most.

“I like working where they have art. The first thing I’m going to see is the art,” said Filippou.

Filippou worked for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as part of the costume design team for the opening ceremony and helped in designing forms. She worked in advertising agencies and magazines as a graphic designer and art editor, worked as an illustrator for children’s books and painted ceramics.

Filippou lives in Athens for six months and in Ohio for the other six months. She continues to travel to host exhibits and explore the art in other parts of the world. Filippou will be available to meet with again at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Oct. 23 and Nov. 4. Her work will continue to be on display through the end of November.

GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area.

Board president receives honor The Austintown Local School administration recently announced that its own School Board President, Kathy Mock, has been named one of the NEOSBA Northeast Region Outstanding School Board Members by the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA).

Mock will be honored, along with three other recipients, on Oct. 5, at the Northeast Region Fall Conference in Wadsworth.

She is eligible to receive the All-Ohio School Board Award that honors board members who demonstrate outstanding boardsmanship and service to public education. It is OSBA’s most prestigious honor.

Mock has ser ved on the Austintown School Board for six years, five of those as Board President. In addition to serving on the board, Mock is the Director of Education and Initiatives for the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and supervises the pre k inderga rten summer program, Success by 6, in 19 schools districts across Mahoning County, as well as a new initiative, Success After Six and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for children birth to age 5 in Mahoning Coun-

Brooks brings home the bronze

Austintown School District is one of 3,762 schools to receive a bronze-level Healthier U.S. Schools award.

When Food Service Director Tascin Brooks presented the banner to Fitch High School administrators, the only question anyone had to ask was, “What’s next?”

Brooks has worked to reinvent the traditional school lunch to make the experience more customer-service based. Food-service employees try new recipes, further culinary education and collaborate with students – their consumers – to make tasty-yethealthful experience.

Fitch High School Principal Chris Berni said he’s proud Austintown’s food-service department takes such an interest

in the students’ overall health – physically and mentally.

“What they do is 100 percent educational,” he said. “In some cases, they are helping kids rethink what they put in their bodies. They would not even consider thinking about [that] if they weren’t coming to this school.”

Brooks said her goal is to feed the students’ brains and bodies – and ensure they take these healthful-eatng habits home with them.

“The more healthy they eat, the better they think instead of being all clogged up with fats when they don’t think right,” said Robin Guzzo, food-service employee.

Food-service employee Debbie Fellows acknowledged that though sometimes it takes time to incorporate new healthful

regulations, her team always ends with success.

“Part of the success of the program is that the staff cares so much,” Brooks said. “It’s very instrumental in making this work.”

Brooks said in the near future she’ll unveil a continental breakfast option – with both cold-bar and hot-bar options for $1.50.

In addition, she wants to put together a student focus group to try different foods and give honest feedback about the current menu.

Hayden Bennett, 11th-grade student and prime candidate for this group, said he felt comfortable making suggestions for the food-service employees to figure out and try.

“It’ll just be beneficial for everyone,” Hayden said.

Cardinal Mooney hosts back-to-school bash On Aug. 28, the Marketing Committee of the Cardinal Mooney High School Board sponsored the first Back to School Bash at Cassese’s MVR Restaurant, located at 410 N. Walnut St. in Youngstown.

More than 400 students, staff and families joined in a day of feasting, fellowship and fundraising to kick off the 2016-17 academic year. MVR catered a dinner and members of the Cardinal Mooney Community provided baked goods and candies for a Mahoning Valleystyled cookie table.

The bash was preceded by a corn hole tournament with proceeds going to the Carmine L. Cassese Memorial Scholarship.

The tournament raised more than $1,200 for the cause. Winners, CMHS alumni Gino Di-

vincenzo and Joe Cunningham, donated their cash prize to the Carmine L. Cassese Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Mooney Family also collected donations for the Lauren Bowman Fund to assist the family of the recently deceased St. Christine’s student.

They won their first game against WASA Fire 6-0 and their second game against the Grizzly Grizzlies 2-1. Then they faced Louisville in the championship game and had a 6-1 victory. Mrs. Mikovich worked for General Electric Austintown Coil for 18 years. Mr. Mikovich served in the U.S. Marine Corps, then worked for Youngstown Building Materials for 38 years. The couple are members of St. Brendan Church.
