DAV hosts trunk sale to benefit Veterans and families The DAV, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #2 “Junk In The Trunk Sale” will take place on Sept. 17 (Sept. 24 rain date) from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Austintown Senior Center, located at 110 Westchester Drive in Austintown.

Items for sale will be garage or yard sale style, and will include items from arts and crafts, as well as antiques and collectables vendors.

Spaces for vendors wishing to participate in this event are available. The registration is $10 per one parking space and must be received by Sept. 8. No hot food, soft drinks or raffle drawings can be done by vendors.

There is a limit of 100 spaces and are available on a first come, first served basis. After your registration payment is received, you will be notified of your confirmed space(s).

Vendors may arrive after 7:30 a.m. and must be in their assigned space(s) by 8:30 a.m. No refunds will be given for any reason.

Proceeds from the “Junk In The Trunk Sale” will used to assist Mahoning County Veterans and their families. If there are any questions or an application is needed, call Tom

DAV is the Disabled American Veterans and they are Chapter #2 of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The group is all volunteer, with no paid staff, an IRS 501(c)(4) non-profit and registered with the state of Ohio as a charity.

DAV provides assistance to Veterans and their families with holiday food drive passouts, food cards, wheelchairs and anything else within the group’s means. They render full military funeral services when requested to do so locally or at the nearby National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.

DAV also supports the local community throughout the year by participating in local parades and fairs. They provide Color Guard and Rifle Details when requested by local schools and other community organizations. They also provide free, professional assistance in obtaining benefits and services for Veterans and their families that have been earned through military service that is provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and other government agencies.

Greenbriar benefit concert The Commons at Greenbriar will be hosting a concert to benefit Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to help send Deanna to the Florida Theme Parks. Sing at the Canfield Fair As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 4 this year), singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service.

A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Sherry Goddard.

Poland Union Elementary School students packed up their school supplies and headed to their first day of school on Aug. 22.

Teachers prepared different activities to ease the students back into school. First-grade teacher Tina Bonarigo taught her class how to make “jitter juice” to help her class get rid of their first day jitters.

Each of the students got a piece of paper with a “jitter juice” poem on the back and a space on the front to write the recipe. Once the students wrote the ingredients and how to make the juice, they got to drink a cup of their own “jitter juice.”

“I like first grade more than kindergarten because there’s more fun stuff. We didn’t have mail before and that’s fun,” said Caleb Scott, a first-grade student.

Scott said he enjoyed his first day of first grade, especially recess. He is excited to read more books and prepare for the rest of the school year.

It wasn’t just the first day for the students, but also for new kindergarten teacher Maggie Schuster.

“My little boy is here, he is in kindergarten and today was his first day. We walked out the door together this morning for our first day of kindergarten so that See STUDENTS, Page 4

Local church to hose family carnival event There will be a free family funday carnival at Poland United Methodist Church on Sept. 17. There will be face painting, bounce castles, balloon animals, fair foods and more fun for all ages. Entry is free and there will be free games and prizes.

Rotary offers flag program The Poland Rotary is offering a flag program. The club will install a flag in your front yard covering the six major holidays (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day (9/11) and Veterans Day). They will insert a PVC plastic sleeve, along with a cap, in the ground in your front

yard to hold the flag. Nothing is attached to your home. A 3 foot by 5 foot American Flag mounted on a 10 foot metal pole will be placed in the sleeve to cover these holidays and taken down by our club in between.

The club purchases the flags with mountings and they store and maintain them. It is all done for you. Proceeds from this program are used to support local youth, community and international Rotary projects. The total cost is $35 per year.

Schuster read two stories, one about the teacher being nervous, to show the students that everyone gets nervous for the first day. As the day came to an end, Schuster and her students became more comfortable with each other and are ready for the rest of the school year. Prior to teaching, Schuster was a kindergarten tutor at Union Elementary.

Mercy Health will have comedy show benefit Mahoning Valley will host the first ever Stand Up for Man Up to benefit the Man Up Mahoning Valley program at Mercy Health — Youngstown.

Happily Ever After Amber Saviers v William James Amber Saviers and William James were married May 21 at St. Charles Church. The Rev. Gerald DeLucia officiated at the ceremony, and the reception took place at Mr. Anthony’s.

Parents of the bride are Carl and Tami Saviers of Randolph, Ohio, and parents of the groom are William and Suzanne James of Boardman.

The bride wore a beaded, mermaidstyle lace gown with a keyhole back.

Her ensemble was completed by a set of pearls given to her by her grandmother, who wore them at her wedding 60 years ago.

Honor attendants were Alison Saviers, the bride’s sister, and Marisa James, the sister-in-law of the groom. Mr. Mangus also graduated from KSU. He earned a master’s degree in accounting and works as a consultant for KPMG in Cleveland.

Car show benefits local family

Boardman Park hosted the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club’s 38th annual car show on Aug. 7.

The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club originated in 1878, has around 200 members involved and is the largest car club in the tri-county area. Every year the car show is hosted there is always a beneficiary

that receives a portion of the money raised.

The recipient of the money is usually a child who has some type of major handicap and their family.

This year’s beneficiary was Abbey Lipinsky. Lipinsky is a student from Boardman who was diagnosed w ith a rare childhood cancer called clear cell sarcoma. The money raised See CAR SHOW, Page 9

Guests who wanted to enter their cars in the car show had the option to pre-register or register the day of. Over 200

people register their cars to be shown off. The car show is one of the few judged car shows in the area.

The Western Reserve Amateur Radio Club comes to the annual car show to set up and broadcast about t he show and keep listeners updated on what is going on. The radio club broadcasts throughout the world giving the chance for people from different locations to listen.

come to the car show. There were 25 different types of classes people could register their cars under when registering for the show. Cars in 23 out of the 25 classes would be judged and the winners and awards are announced toward the end of the afternoon.

The M VOCC hosts a ca r cruise every Tuesday at the Austintown Senior Center from 5-8 p.m. during the summer and welcomes all types of cars to come in.

Mill Creek hosts historical day at Idora Falls

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a Day at Idora Falls event on Aug. 13 at Lanterman’s Mill.

The morning and afternoon was dedicated to showing the history of Lanterman’s Mill, Idora Park and Youngstown.

Guests could come and see the mill inside Lanterman’s in motion, food, activities and crafts.

There were tables set up with posters and information the

guests could learn from to get an idea of what Youngstown, Lanterman’s Mill and Idora Park used to be like.

The Day at Idora Falls was to celebrate the waterfall adjacent to Lanterman’s Mill getting one of its previous names, Idora Falls, back. Idora Falls was a name shared with a famous 20th-centur y amusement pa rk, Idora Pa rk, i n Youngstown. This year is the park’s 125th anniversary making the event even more spe-

cial and impactful.

In the morning there was a hike to Idora Falls that guests could participate in that would bring them to Lanterman’s Mill to enjoy the festivities. The guided hike provided information about the park, Idora Falls and Lanterman’s Mill.

The Day at Idora Falls has been put on by the park before, but this year the Metropark looked to expand into more of it’s surroundings to include in the day of activities.

Join the Positively Preposterous Puppeteers for an evening of puppet fun on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Enjoy a puppet show and stay afterwards to build your very own sock puppet. This event is for children of all ages.
