Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for March 19 The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be March 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main St, in Canfield.

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Canfield Boy Scout Troop 115’s to host pasta and meatball dinner Canfield’s St. Michael’s Boy Scout Troop 115 invites the public to join them for their annual pasta and meatball dinner to take place on March 25 at St. Michael’s Parish Hall located at 360 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Pasta, meatballs, salad and dessert along with an opportunity to win prizes will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

for carry out. Tickets will be available at the door and are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6–12. Children who are ages 5 and under eat free. Boy Scout Troop 71’s 54th annual Good Friday “All You Can Eat Fish” Dinner The public is invited to join Boy Scout Troop 71 for their 54th annual Good Friday “All You Can Eat Fish” Dinner on March 30 from 4–7 p.m. at Western Reserve High School, located at 13850 W. Akron-Canfield Road (State Route 224). in Berlin Center (in the old building behind new school).

Prepared and served by the members of the troop, this “all you can eat” fish dinner costs $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6–12 and free for children ages 5 and under; dessert is limited to one per person. Offered are both dinein or take-out. Troop 71, chartered by VFW Post 9571, meets every Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (except for the fourth Tuesday of the month) at the Post 9571 VFW Hall, located at 11397 Ellsworth Road in Ellsworth. This sweet lady is named Olive! Olive is a female, brown brindle Pit Bull Terrier mix who is estimated to be about 1-year and 10-months-old. She came to Angels for Animals April 20, 2017, but is currently in foster care. Staff are taking applications and will call potential adoptive parents once she comes in. The March meeting of TQGIBT That Quilt Group I Belong To will take place on March 20 at the Rotary Building at Fair Park in Canfield. Sandy Lord from the Gallery in Mercer, Pa. is the featured guest. In addition to offering patterns and fabrics, Lord will preview her instructions for the Quilt Happening event on April 28. She will provide insight into the collage animal and bird quilt patterns the group will be stitching at the happening. Coffee with the master gardeners – garden ponds The topics of owning, beautifying and maintaining garden ponds and more will be covered on March 19 during this coffee and refreshments program at 9:30 a.m. It will start with refreshments and will continue with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speaker Stephanie Hughes, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteer, will demonstrate how to create a work of art with your garden pond. Registration for this event is $15, which includes coffee, a light breakfast and program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension, located at 490 S. Hilltop students celebrate STEM Week

Students at Hilltop Elementary School participated in STEM Week at the school March 5-9. STEM Week, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, was created by a group of Hilltop parents and has been improved upon and evolved each year.

Each grade had its own designated STEM day with activities which were grade level/ age appropriate. The activities were also tied into each grade level’s curriculum.

“The STEM activities are adjusted to the grade levels. As the grade levels go up, the activities become more complex. We also correlate the activities to what the students are learning in class and we coordinate with their lesson plans,” said Melanie Gaffney, third grade STEM chair.

Each class had one hour in the gym to explore each of the hands-on activities. PTO parent volunteers supervised the activities and served as grade-level chairs. Kelly Volovar served as STEM chair.

Each class was divided into groups, with each group assigned to a station and then the groups rotated through the science, technology, engineering and math stations, spending approximately eight minutes at each station.

For the third-graders, there were two engineering stations. At the first station, students were asked to build a structure with blocks and several items which could withstand balls and other items shot from a catapult at the other engineering station.

reaction using dry ice and they then experienced instant snow, helping to measure and weight the materials. Students could also hypothesize about what would happen when water was added to the instant snow material.

For the math stations, students played a giant game of Minecraft, solving problems and using graphing skills and also played a game of War using oversized multiplication flash cards, using their fast math skills.

The technology station was the same for all students, which used the app Osmo on iPads on which students could digitally play education games and solve problems.

The complexity of the puzzles and games were adjusted for each grade level.

A Look and See table was set up in the middle of the gym for students to explore several items related to science, technology, engineering and math, including fossils, rocks, magnets and kaleidoscopes.

Golf Classic bus trip The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. Two members of the Canfield High School Band were selected among several hundred auditions and applications to perform with the Ohio Band Director’s Conference (OBDC) Honor Band at the University of Akron. The honor band was led by guest conductor Dustin Seifert from Eastern New Mexico University and also featured OBDC composer in residence, Richard Saucedo. The University of Akron (UA) has been the host for the annual Ohio Band Directors Conference since 1974. Each year the focus of the conference is secondary music education and the UA Bands and School of Music sponsor a guest composer residency as well as a guest conductor for the Ohio Band Directors Conference Honor Band. Canfield Middle School presents “Androcles and the Lion” The stage is set at Canfield Village Middle School. The CVMS Players present “Androcles and the Lion” on March 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18 at 2 p.m. in the Canfield Village Middle School front gymnatorium. The Canfield Community Concert Band will present a benefit performance for Operation Blessing at 3 p.m. March 25 at Canfield High School on Cardinal Drive in Canfield.

A volunteer group of more than 40 members, Operation Blessing distributes food items to Mahoning County families in need.

Housed at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, Operation Blessing is supported by several Canfield area churches, high school groups and local businesses as well as individuals. To help carry on its mission, support for Operation Blessing in the form of nonperishable food items and monetary donations will be accepted as admission at the door.

The program, “Transcribed,” will feature musical works not originally written for concert band but which have been transcribed to fit the performance and instrumentation qualities of a band. The concert will include a variety of musical styles from Disney Pictures’ “Fantasia 2000” to the orchestral classic “Finale from Symphony in F Minor No.4”

Founded in 1976, The Canfield Community Concert Band is made up of individuals who volunteer their time and talent to bring musical entertainment to area residents. The band is under the direction of Eric Bable, music director for Crestview Local School District.

The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Boy Scout Council serves families in Mahoning County and Hubbard with more than 1,000 youth involved supported by more than 600 adult volunteers.

Great Trail Council serves more than 13,000 scouts in Summit, Portage, Medina, Mahoning, Trumbull and Northern Wayne Counties. Scoutreach is the BSA’s commitment to making sure that all young people have an opportunity to join Scouting, regardless of their circumstanc-

es, neighborhood or ethnic background. Scoutreach is Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts locally in community settings such as the Youngstown City School System and the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.

Attendees include individuals from area businesses, community leaders as well as those who believe in the Scouting program.

During this time, you will be introduced to the lessons Scouts learn for life along with the Scouting traditions their family and friends have experienced with them that strengthens the Scouting program for youth and families in our district. Scouting strives to develop leadership, character, citizenship and life-saving skills while enjoying camping, hiking, rock climbing and more.

CHC celebrates Dr. Seuss

C.H. Campbell Elementary School celebrated its annual Right to Read Week by honoring author Dr. Seuss Feb. 26 through March 3.

The week featured different themed days to pay tribute to Dr. Seuss.

To start the week, students and staff celebrated Cat in the Hat Monday, during which students and staff could wear their favorite hat. Next was Fox in Socks Tuesday, during which students and staff were encouraged to wear crazy or mismatched socks.

Wacky Wednesday gave the students and staff the opportunity to dress wacky with crazy clothes or hair. Horton Hears a Who! Thursday was a day during which students and staff were encouraged to perform a random act of kindness for someone.

To round out the week, on Oh the Places You’ll Go! Friday, students and staff could wear their favorite college or vacation shirt.

Go Baby Go build takes place at MCCTC

The third annual Go Baby Go build took place at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, with nine teams of students and professionals modifying ride-on cars for nine children on Feb. 24.

Go Baby Go is a program which provides modified rideon cars for young children with disabilities. Dr. Cole Gallaway PT, PhD, an associate professor at the University of Delaware, founded this program. As there are only a few commercially available devices to promote mobility in young children, modified ride-on cars can facilitate a child’s independence at a much younger age, and at a relatively low cost.

This nationally-known program is specifically for young children, 1-5 years of age, with mobility impairments. Children who have difficulty moving on their own may have an underlying medical diagnosis including cerebral palsy, down syndrome or spina bifida. Each car is custom built for a child’s needs, helps promote mobility and also allows a child to have fun.

The Magic of Michael Foundation made this year’s build possible.

Volu nteers for t he bu i ld helped equip nine cars for local families and included electricians, occupational therapists, physical therapists and teachers. Students in Walter Barber’s engineering class at MCCTC also volunteered their time, as did YSU physical therapy students. The Valley STEM School

at MCCTC designed and made decals for the cars.

As this is the first year The Magic of Michael Foundation has been involved in the program, Hirschbeck said she was impressed with the build.

“As this was the first year we have been involved as a foundation, I didn’t know quite what to expect, but the whole program has exceeded my expectations. Beverly and her team have done a great job orchestrating this entire event,” Hirschbeck said.

An ‘obstacle course’ was set up for the children to drive through once their cars were competed and each child was gifted the car to take home.

Swim team members honored with walk-through

In keeping with the Canfield High School tradition to honor athletes who have earned the right to compete at the state level, the school had a walk-through for four members of the boys swim team on Feb. 22.

The team members, senior Cullen Brady, senior Kamran Sarac, junior Jason Paris and junior Bobby Kutsch, all earned a trip to the Division II Boys State Swim Meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton on Feb. 23.

The four members will compete in the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. Brady will compete in the 100 free individual, Sarac will compete in the 50 freestyle and the 100 fly and Paris will compete in the 50 freestyle.

The team is coached by CHS alumni Connor Brady, a fourtime state qualifier. Brady, in his first year as head coach, graduated from CHS in 2015 and is a student at Youngtown State University.

Keeping it all in the family, Cullen Brady is the younger brother of Connor Brady, and Kutsch and Paris are first cousins.

Prior to the walk through, CHS Principal Michael Moldovan addressed the student body.

“We wish the members of our Boys Swim Team the best of luck at the state swim meet tomorrow. It’s a honor to go to Canton again. Canfield will be well represented and we wish them well.

So step out of your classrooms and show them your support,” Moldovan said.

Canfield Wrestling Club successful in February In February, Canfield Wrestling Club celebrated its novice wrestlers with its medals tournament.

The club also hosted a sectionals tournament, which is designed to move its experienced wrestlers on to the league championship.

The medals tournament was designed to celebrate first and second year wrestlers.

Divided into foursomes, they wrestle for a place on the podium. The medals tournament aims to promote early wrestlers’ confidence and encourage them to return for another year.

Later in the tournament, 81 youth wrestlers took part in the sectional tournament.

Boys and girls alike, in grades six and below, traveled from local communities including Salem, Alliance, Crestview and Beaver Local to wrestle for first place among weightbased foursomes Canfield boasted several first place winners at sectionals, including Jose Estremera, Jon Adamson, Tanner Stricko, Max Switka and Aiden Hensdill.

Wrestlers began their season in October with several weeks of physical conditioning. They continued to learn and practice wrestling skills four nights a week through November, December and January.

“I’ve seen some impressive progress these

last few weeks in our wrestlers,” said Dave Crawford, head coach. He noted that wrestling is a sport perfected by repetition and practice. “Every practice is a chance to get better,” he reminds the athletes each week.

Canfield Wrestling boasts several tournament accolades at youth and high school levels. The club will host open house nights next fall for interested young wrestlers.

Annual Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup seeks groups to participate With more than 40 locations in the Mill Creek MetroParks system needing attention, groups are needed more than ever to lend a hand and participate in this year’s Earth Day Cleanup.

Although more than 300 Scouts and volunteers are expected to scour Mill Creek MetroParks in recognition of Earth Day to remove winter buildup of litter and debris, more help is needed. The cleanup is co-sponsored by the Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council, B.S.A. and Mill Creek MetroParks.

The cleanup will take place on April 21 throughout Mill Creek MetroParks. Coordinators will stop by the Ford Nature Education Center (840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, OH 44511) to pick up supplies before 9 a.m. and then meet with their groups at various locations and work until noon. This cleanup takes place rain or shine.

In 35 years, more than 11,725

participants have volunteered more than 36,000 hours to clean various areas of the MetroParks.

Just in the past 16 years, more than 2,400 bags of trash and 1,100 bags of recyclables along with numerous loose items such as tires, toys, furniture, pipes, wood crates, electronic items and even the proverbial kitchen sink, have been removed. Last year, there were fewer bags of trash but more bags of recyclables.

As in years past, sponsorship of this event is in cooperation with the Recycling Division of the Mahoning County Green Team.

They will be providing these hardworking volunteers with trash and recycling bags, gloves and grab-its, as well as pencils, certificates and car litter bags for each participant.

This event is also in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks

off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants who take action in their communities every year to create positive change and lasting impact. Details can be found out at https://www.kab.org/our-partners. The MetroParks hosts the event by facilitating the organization and registration of groups, sites and supplies.

Areas within this cleanup include Mill Creek Park and Mill Creek MetroParks Regional Facilities Yellow Creek Park and the MetroParks Farm.

Area agency is seeking to fill a Labor position. The Laborer will spend majority of time cleaning and preparing apartments for rent, ensuring grounds and areas are kept clean and well maintained, performing general cleaning of shops and offices.

Preparation of the units include and not limited to the removal of all debris; cleaning appliances and determining whether each is working properly; clean and replace light bulbs, fixtures, light covers; all surfaces including wall and ceilings, closets, cabinetry, sinks, tubs, and showers shall be cleaned and caulked as necessary. Must be able to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical problems. Must become familiar with the lease of the tenants and notify supervisor of potential tenant lease violations. Responsible for the landscaping at the sites; operate all vehicles, tools, lawn care equipment, snow removal equipment and machinery safely in accordance to OSHA standards.

Must be physically fir to lift 50 lbs., bend, squat, climb ladders and other physical movements required to perform the job. Hourly rate of pay is $16.9889 along with benefit package.
