The Letang bracket team placed second overall at the Jam Tournament at UPMC.

Teams compete in the Jam Tournament at UPMC T he Ja m Tou r na ment at UPMC Lemeiux Center in Cranberry took place on Jan. 27 and 28 and two ADM blue teams were entered.

One team was entered into the blue minor Schultz bracket and the other in the blue minor Letang bracket.

Bot h tea ms played fou r games, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.

The Schultz bracket team ended the weekend with a record of 1-2-1 and did not advance. The team entered into the Letang

bracket ended the four games at 3-1. Two of those games were shutouts by the goalie and the Letang team finished in second place in their bracket and advanced to the semifinal game.

They played the first place finisher in the Schultz bracket.

The Phantoms won the semifinal game in a shoot-out and advanced to the championship game where the game ended in tie again. The Phantoms finished second place overall after coming up short on the shootout.

Friend to speak on experiences from Battle of the Bulge

Howard, “Howdy” Friend, local retired educator and administrator, will relate his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge for members of the World War II Heritage Group when they meet on Feb. 19.

The speech will be preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:15 p.m. at AlaCarte Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield. A power point presentation will accompany his speech, which is based on his action in the famous battle. Reservations are due to David Frank, 330 7570515, by Feb. 15.

Free pancake and sausage breakfast The Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road at the corner of Kirk Road and State Route 46 in Austintown, is hosting a free breakfast on Feb. 10 from 9-11 a.m. Donations are accepted and the proceeds will go towards the World Service Projects.

Supper at the Corner On Feb. 15, Smith Corners United Methodist Church will be hosting a free dinner from 4:3-6 p.m. The supper is free as a community outreach of the church and open to all each month. The church is located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road at the corner of Kirk Road and State Route 46 in Austintown. Donations are accepted to continue this program.

AIS brings together school and community for World Read Aloud Day

Austintow n Intermediate School observed World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 1 by inviting members of the community and other Austintown schools to read to the students.

The campaign, started by the international literary nonprofit LitWorld and sponsored for 2018

by Scholastic, aims at raising awareness for the “750 million people who lack basic reading and writing skills,” as stated on the LitWorld website.

The school invited parents to sign up and volunteer to read

throughout the day. School staff members, such as principals Michael Sauner and Shannon Patrick, also read to classes in the school. Some classes went to the elementary school and read to classes in that building.

“The program is based on the importance of reading and reading aloud, but the students are also excited to see the parents come in and read,“ said Sauner. He said that the community and the school share a special connection.

“I’ve always liked to read. My mother read to me when I was young and I read to my children now,“ Howard said.

The teachers celebrated the day as well. Many teachers had multiple parents come in and read throughout the day. The teachers also wore shirts that read “reading is my jam.“ LitWorld pulled information

from a series of studies for a World Read Aloud Day packet.

They cite a study by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research that found “Reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read alouds regardless of parental income, education level or cultural background.“ Assistant principal Owens had the idea to observe the day at the school.

POLICE REPORTS Jan. 24 Arrest: Police picked up Daniel L. Allmon, 28, at his Compass West Drive apartment upon discovering the Austintown man was wanted on an Austintown Area Court warrant.

Jan. 25 Scam: A South Canfield-Niles Road resident told police of being scammed regarding serving on jury duty.

Jan. 26 Theft: A man and a woman reportedly stole cigarette lighters from Country Fair, 1143 N. Canfield-Niles Road.

Harassment: A Kirk Road woman said she’s received unwanted text messages.

Theft: A 17-year-old Austintown boy was accused in a shoplifting situation at Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Menacing: Two Austintown Fitch High School students reportedly threatened to fight each other.

Theft: A Wyndclift Circle resident reported having been scammed while trying to buy a new car.

Jan. 27 Assault: A man reported having been punched about four times during a fight in a Mahoning Avenue restaurant.

Criminal damaging: A bathroom door was damaged at a Mahoning Avenue laundry facility.

Drugs: A traffic stop in the 4200 block of Mahoning Avenue led to the arrests of Jerome F. Prieto, 30, of Kendis Circle, Youngstown, on one felony count each of drug abuse and marijuana possession, along with Javonna L. Flakes, 26, of Burkey Road, Austintown, on charges of drug abuse (cocaine) and marijuana

possession. Found in the vehicle was a bag containing 456 grams of suspected marijuana, two bags that each contained 9 and 13 grams of suspected marijuana, five over-the-counter pills for which no prescription was produced and a bag of suspected cocaine on Flakes’ person, authorities alleged.

Theft: Someone in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road removed a chain saw and a compound bow from a vehicle.

Identity theft: A Westchester Drive man found out a false income-tax return had been filed in his name.

Jan. 28 Counterfeit: A woman reportedly passed a phony $100 bill at Marc’s, 4755 Mahoning Ave. Drugs: Authorities just off Mahoning Avenue pulled over and charged Chelsea L. Morris, 29, with drug abuse (heroin) and possessing drug-abuse instruments after alleging Morris, of South Beverly Avenue, Austintown, had a hypodermic syringe that contained a dark fluid consistent with suspected heroin.

Theft: A 12-inch pizza was stolen from Belleria Pizzeria, 5628 Mahoning Ave. Jan. 29 Arrest: Michael P. Riley, 39, who listed addresses on Beechcrest Drive in Austintown and Ayrshire Drive in Youngstown, was taken into custody at the Beechcrest Drive residence when police learned he was wanted on an Austintown Area Court warrant.

Trespassing: Authorities answered a call about a man asleep in a Mahoning Avenue business that was closed before charging Ronald J. Linden, 50, of John

Street, Struthers, with criminal trespassing. Linden was in the building in violation of a trespassing warning he had been issued last September, police said.

Jan. 30 Arrest: While conducting a welfare check at a Westminster Avenue apartment, authorities took Brian P. Stout, 37, of Westminster, Austintown, into custody. He was wanted on a Niles Municipal Court warrant.

Drugs: Police near South Meridian Road pulled over then charged Karissa E. Kulcsar of Oregon Avenue, Youngstown, with drug abuse (heroin), falsification and possessing drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia after alleging she had two bindles of suspected heroin, a suspected crack-cocaine pipe, two spoons with burn marks common in drug use and a bag containing four hypodermic needles. Kulcsar, 33, also provided a false name and date of birth, a report showed.

Arrest: Officers responded to a likely drug overdose at a Staatz Drive residence, where they took into custody Stephen P. Medved, 48, of Staatz, Austintown, who was wanted on an Austintown Area Court warrant accusing him of failing to appear on a probation-violation charge.

Arrest: A traffic stop in the 3500 block of Mahoning Avenue led to Kiwan R. Warren-Herod’s arrest.

Warren-Herod, 21, of Oxford Street, Youngstown, was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

FIVE Squared art show to open The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its fifth annual FIVE Squared benefit art show and sale from Feb. 4 until March 4 at the McClurg Road facility in Boardman.There will be an opening reception, which is free and open to the community, on Feb. 4 from 1-3 p.m.

More than 400 pieces of 5 inch x 5 inch art from around the world will be for sale for $25 each ($10 for children’s art).

Proceeds from the sale fund the Y’s ARTreach program, which provides free art programing to under-served areas of the community. The art is varied, and artists range in age and ability, with some of the most recognized artists in the community participating alongside amateurs and children. All art is hung anonymously and only after purchase is the artist’s name revealed. Raffle tickets will be sold from 1-2 p.m. for place in line, with general sales beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Fitch class raises money for local charities

Austintown Fitch students raised money for Second Harvest Food Bank and the Salvation Army through a pepperoni roll sale.

Tina Kinnick’s Principals of Marketing class presented the charities with checks in their classroom on Dec. 18. Both charities received $300 each.

Kinnick wanted to bring a lesson to life, which resulted in the charitable act. The students had been learning about the product life cycle in the class. This project reinforced what they

learned as well as helped these charities.

The students in the class chose the two charities to receive the funds they raised. Kinnick said that the students knew about the Salvation Army through their Red Kettle campaign, and knew about the Second Harvest Food Bank from commercials.

Several students in the class sold near or more than 100 pepperoni rolls. Those who sold the most rolls, Destiny Miller and Chris Malloy, presented the check to Becky Miller of the Second Harvest Food Bank and Paul Moore of the Salva-

tion Army. Trey Giannini would have also presented the check because he sold more than 100 pepperoni rolls, but he was absent that day.

Miller and Malloy said that it was easy to sell the products because the money went toward charity. They also said that people seem to be more generous around the holidays. Both of them felt good about giving back through the project.

Many of the students in class became interested with the charities. Some went to stores to ring bells as a part of the Red Kettle campaign.

Rotating Equipment Trainee

The ideal candidate would have experience servicing, troubleshooting and repairing gasoline and diesel vehicles and golf carts. Experience inspecting and testing vehicles, performing preventative maintenance, repairing mechanical and electrical systems, replacing parts and components, maintaining service records and operating diagnostic equipment is necessary. Must be familiar with all aspects of vehicle operation and must understand the functions of the major components/systems and be familiar with the different categories of lubricants and mechanical tools. It would be helpful if the candidate also had a minimum of 1-year experience repairing and servicing all types of rotating, and mechanical related equipment including but not limited to compressors, pumps of all types, steam turbines, and lubrication systems. Experience removing, installing, rebuilding and precision aligning of mechanical equipment is desired. Troubleshooting skills and experience is preferred. Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and equipment reliability improvement efforts are beneficial.

Happily Ever After Savages celebrate 50th anniversary at dinner party BOARDMAN

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Savage recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a dinner at Johnny’s Restaurant in Boardman that was hosted by their children.

The couple’s children are Jack (Becky) Savage Jr. and Julie (Jason) Bressler.

They have one grandchild, Collin “CJ” Bressler.

Mr. Savage and the former Donna Hodak were married Nov. 25, 1967, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard.

Mrs. Savage is a homemaker and was employed part-time in the supply room retiring in 2004. He also served in the of the Youngstown Post Office.

Mr. Savage was the human-resource U.S. Army.

The couple are members of St. Charles director for Parker Hannifin (Commercial InterTech) in Youngstown before Borromeo Catholic Church.

The bride-elect graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She also graduated from Northeast Ohio Medical University with doctor of pharmacy and is a pharmacist for CVS Pharmacy.

The prospective groom graduated from the College of Wooster with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and also from Northeast Ohio Medical University with a doctor of medicine. He is a family-medicine resident in the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville, Fla.

Miss Costello, Mr. O’Connell plan April rite A nt hony and Linda Costello of Austintown and Patrick and Diane O’Connell of Girard are announcing the engagement of their children, Christina Costello of Austintown and Michael O’Connell of Girard.

Invitations will be issued for a ceremony that will take place April 14 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard. A reception will follow that day at The Embassy in Struthers.

The bride-elect earned a bachelor’s degree in education as well as master’s degrees in counseling and business administration from Youngstown State University. She is the director of the Center for Career Management at YSU’s Williamson College of Business Administration.

The prospective groom is a firefighter with the Niles Fire Department.
