BACK TO SCHOOL FAMILY GUIDE

WELCOME!
July 23, 2024
TVS Community,

I trust this letter finds you enjoying your last few weeks of summer While I enjoy the pace of summer, I cannot wait for the First Day of School! This year, I am excited to begin my seventh year leading The Village School and my 21st year working in administrative roles at independent schools.
It has been a busy summer on our campus Our Team has been hard at work preparing the campus for your arrival in August Our big move was relocating the LS/MS Village Success Center into the Lakeside Administration Building, freeing up a room for MS Spanish, and adding a needed additional US science classroom to accommodate our growing program and enrollment. You can view detailed maps by clicking HERE
Here are the other projects and additions that are in progress this summer at TVS:
New TVS Entrance Sign
Adding Artificial Turf over the LS playground surface ECE playgrounds will be getting turf
Relocation of the tent to the beach volleyball court & adding sod in the quad
All the Village School projects were made possible due to your tremendous support of our Knights Gala and The Village Fund (Annual Fund) Thank you for your generosity to these fundraising initiatives!
Also, we are implementing and rolling out a new online portal for parents called MyTVS. Further, we will be moving to a trimester system along with new bell schedules for MS and US as we continue to follow the most current brain-based research on how students learn best

UPPER SCHOOL WELCOME LETTER

Dear TVS Upper School Families,
I hope you had a spectacular summer with your loved ones! That prized time with family flew by as my husband and I visited with our six children and 13 grandchildren in four different states and then squeezed in adventures to Montana, North Carolina, and New Mexico where we lived on a ranch and learned about movie production on the set of Yellowstone, attended a conference hosted by Jon Gordon, and a week-long retreat with Father Richard Rohr The beauty of our country and its incredible resources never cease to amaze me as I have been blessed with opportunities to connect and learn from incredible leaders and mentors Now, summer vacation is winding down, and it’s time to begin final preparations for the next academic school year This letter is to share important information with you to chart the course for a successful academic year
First, the upper school schedule, outlined for you below, will be a change for students and is specifically designed to reduce transition time and increase the depth of subject matter, academic achievement, and overall mental health in balancing students’ busy schedules The academic year is divided into 6 terms, each 27 days long. A single term of a class or other activity is a module or “mod,” with individual courses ranging from 1 to 3 mods in length, providing the right amount of time to dig into each subject In terms of instruction, 3-mod courses are equivalent to a full-year course Mods in a multi-mod course do not necessarily meet in consecutive terms, so the combination of classes and other activities a student takes changes each term
The Mod Schedule is built around a deeper-reaching and more interesting curriculum for students and teachers that fosters intellectual curiosity, promotes well-being, and provides choice and focus
(continued)

Nikki Sweeney Head of Upper School & Assistant Head of School
MOD SCHEDULE
MOD 1 - August 13 - September 25
MOD 2 - September 26 - November 5
MOD 3 - November 6 - December 20
MOD 4 - January 7 - February 14
MOD 5 - February 24 - April 4
MOD 6 - April 7 - May 23
REMINDER
To view the summer learning packets by grade level, please Students should complete their Summer Learning Packets before school starts. CLICK HERE
Each class is 85 minutes long, with breaks in between In keeping with research on how to best structure time for busy high school students, the day includes time for clubs, homework, extra help, group work, time with teachers, counselors, etc. athletics, performing arts, and or down time.
Breaks and WIN Time are integrated into the schedule during the morning WIN, an acronym for ‘What I Need’, designates a period allowing students to engage in various activities such as meeting with teachers, studying, completing coursework, visiting the library, eating, or attending club meetings –tailored to their individual requirements. Students are all assigned a classroom with their grade level peers overseen by a teacher who will take attendance and provide any needed oversight Also, during WIN time there are assigned Math and English lab classrooms with teachers who teach those courses to assist them as needed
Students are required to participate in at least one school activity this year with NO exceptions. Chapel will occur on Wednesdays during the WIN period at 10:00 a m Students will be expected to wear chapel attire as described in the handbook, or will be sent home to change into appropriate attire before returning Enforcing the dress code will be standard practice with the admin team greeting students as they enter TVS each day ensuring expectations outlined in the handbook, and below for your review.
Athletic wear is NOT permitted Monday through Thursday This includes sweatpants It can be worn on Friday (Spirit Day)
Collared shirts (polo, rugby, or oxford style); OR T-shirts of any color. Wording or images on shirts must be school appropriate (as determined by the Dean of Students)
Students have the choice of wearing chino-style shorts, pants, jeans, capris, skirts, or skorts at an appropriate length
Students may wear dresses or shirts (at an appropriate length) with or without sleeves. Tank tops or spaghetti strap tops are not permitted.
Pants must be clean and without holes (see Friday Spirit Day exception below).
Boxer shorts or undergarments may not be exposed
Leggings or yoga pants are only permitted on Friday and must be worn with appropriate shirts that are mid thigh in length Bottoms must be covered
Shirts may be worn untucked with no midriff exposure. Crop-tops are not permitted.
(continued)

Certain activities, i e , science labs, may require special footwear In such instances, students must follow the directions of the instructor
Hats including baseball caps, visors, and the like are permitted outside but must be removed inside of any school/church building.
Hair color should be appropriate and not distracting.
Rubber Flip Flops are not permitted.
Friday spirit wear attire - students who participate and wear TVS attire (which includes TVS shirts and/or black or gold appropriate tops) may wear jeans with holes (no holes above fingertip length and holes should be appropriately sized - see the Dean of Students for clarification), athletic shorts (no short shorts), and joggers/sweatpants.
Next, the cell phone policy prioritizes student engagement and dictates that cell phones are placed in individual student phone lockers during the school day Under no circumstances are cell phones permitted on campus during the academic day If a student needs to access his/her phone, Mr Harpe, the Dean of Students, will open the locker for the student to access his/her device
TVS is a 1 to 1 computer device campus Students are responsible for obtaining their own device for use at school Upper School students (grades 9 to 12) are encouraged to bring in a full-featured laptop (Mac or PC), but may also use a Chromebook Be sure to review the details and follow the instructions on the Technology Update Letter found on page 23

Lastly, the attendance policy will be strictly enforced so that students can have no more than four absences per module without the risk of credit denial for a course This change prioritizes students’ presence in school where they achieve the greatest academic outcomes
Upper School Schedule 2024-25 4 Day Rotation
As we begin a new academic year together, I want to emphasize that the administrative team, the faculty, and I are grateful for the opportunity to work with you in providing the very best academic experience for your child(ren) I encourage you to read the Student/Parent Handbook, which will be shared separately, shortly, where all of this information is clearly articulated Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me should you have any questions
Peace & blessings,
Nikki Sweeney Head of Upper School & Assistant Head of School

LOWER SCHOOL WELCOME LETTER
Dear Lower School Families,

It’s difficult to fathom that the fun-filled days of summer break will soon come to an end It is my hope that you have made many beautiful memories with family and friends, taken time for relaxation, enjoyed the luxury of not being tied down by a schedule, and have been able to sprinkle bits of travel along the way. Summer provides much needed down time, but leaves the halls of Lower School quiet We become anxious for the return to normalcy, longing to hear the voices of children and teachers to brighten our days
The summer has been quite busy with improvements that await you. The halls have been refreshed with new walls, fresh paint, repaired and repainted storage units for our intermediated grade students, new faculty and staff have been hired, curriculum enhancements have been purchased, a more defined tiered discipline system has been added to the parent-student handbook, and a strengthened enrichment program has been added to the Village Success Center to name a few.
I too was able to get some downtime with family and friends My husband and I were able to travel with our daughter to New Jersey earlier in the summer to check out the Rutgers University graduate school campus where she will begin her doctoral studies in the fall. We spent time with our son here in Naples, celebrated birthdays, the birth of our nation, and spent evenings playing games Lastly, I was able to spend a couple weeks at home in Virginia with family and friends
I am now looking forward to the beginning of the year with all our TVS families!

Parent/Student Handbook Changes - I encourage you to PLEASE read the Student/Parent Handbook, which will be shared separately, shortly, where all of this information is clearly articulated Important information you may find useful:
LS School Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy- It is our recommendation that the ownership of smartphones for students begins no earlier than 8th grade. There is much research that supports this philosophy Click to read Why wait?
Students in Lower School are NOT permitted to bring smartwatches or iPads to school. While we prefer that parents wait until 8th grade to provide a cell phone to students, parents who provide one earlier may allow their student(s) in grades three through five, who participate in after-school athletics, to bring cell phones to school Students must give them to the homeroom teachers upon entering the classroom Failure to comply will result in the loss of cell phone privileges entirely
(continued)

Trimesters- Our year is now divided by trimester: Student grade reports will be reported three times a year instead of four We are excited about this new change. As this will provide teachers with more time to cover content and students more time to learn before report cards are issued and more time for social emotional growth between reporting periods The school calendar will not change
Attendance Policy - The school considers six (6) or more absences per trimester per class to be excessive. Excessive absences from a class, excused or unexcused other than a school-related absence, during the course of a semester, may result in denial of the credit for that course including but not limited to denial of grade promotion or denial to return the following year
ECE/LS Discipline Policy - TVS will approach misbehavior with a four tier system In deciding how to handle students’ misbehavior, we take into account severity and how likely it is to reoccur Occurrences in younger grades will be addressed in a developmentally appropriate manner
Student and family confidentiality is of the utmost importance to us when handling disciplinary matters. We will only communicate directly with the student/family affected We will not be able to share more broadly what consequences may be in place Details can be found in the Parent-Student Handbook which will be shared separately, shortly
Lower School (Grades K-5) - Uniform Reminders - The Village School LS students must wear an approved school uniform Monday through Friday Tommy Hilfiger is our new uniform vendor; however, this is a transition year therefore Lands End uniforms may be worn this year The link to purchase online at Tommy Hilfiger is globalschoolwear.com You can search by name or by school code. The Village School code is: Vill04. Spirit Fridays allow for shirts purchased through The Village School store which you can CLICK HERE to access In addition, on Spirit Fridays, students may wear full-length blue jeans with no holes if they wear a TVS Spirit shirt All sweaters, jackets, hoodies, and sweatshirts must bear the school name or logo while in the building. If not, they must be left in the locker or backpack.
Uniforms should be the proper size and neatly worn Incidents of uniform violations may result in a consequence Chapel uniforms are required on the day of chapel Boys are required to tuck their shirts in and wear a belt on chapel days Students are expected to follow the uniform code as written. Skirts and skorts are to be worn at an appropriate length, shorts should be worn underneath skirts in grades PreK3-5th. PE uniforms are required for Middle School and Upper School. See details about uniforms on page 27
(continued)

The students are free to select the shoes and socks they like as long as they are closed-toed, appropriate, and suitable for school and the playground Rubber flipflops and sandals are not allowed.
Dyed hair, dyed extensions, long fingernails, long earrings and the wearing of make-up is NOT permitted in ECE or the Lower School The length or style of a student's hair should NOT obstruct their eyes or become a distraction to learning

ATHLETICS WELCOME LETTER

Hello Knight Nation!!!

I trust this letter finds you and your family well-rested from the summertime vacations and having some downtime! I hope you are looking forward to returning to campus and making this a year to remember! I am honored to be serving as the Athletic Director here at TVS! We are all so fortunate to be part of this community and so blessed to have a small part in building its foundations and traditions
Our athletic programs play an essential role in teaching our young men and women to conduct themselves with honor and integrity along with the other Christ skills we look to for guidance. Athletics allows them to learn how to persevere through adversity, communicate within a team, make sacrifices, and learn to see their commitments through These all allow our student-athletes to develop a sense of teamwork and service to their community, all of which will pay dividends later on in life
Our athletic department is committed to providing a challenging, supportive, and caring environment that will allow each individual athlete to reach their full academic, athletic, and spiritual potential We expect our student-athletes, coaches, fans, and community members to conduct themselves in a manner that shows respect and sportsmanship in ALL that we do. From practices, team meetings, home and away contests, travel, etc, everything we do will be done with respect, class, and to the best of our abilities
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to all that our Knights will accomplish this year!! You are our Knight Nation!!

THE LEARNING CENTER (TLC) UPDATE
Dear Village School Parents,
I am pleased to announce that we continue to broaden the scope of The Learning Center (TLC) to better serve all of the Village School's students. It is now known as The Village Success Center (VSC), which includes Enrichment Programming for Lower School students, Bridging support
services for Upper School students new to our school, and services across divisions Due to the tremendous growth o we have allocated space in the Lakeside Administrative Wi MS TLC and Enrichment Programs. These spaces will prov environments for our exceptional program We are als fantastic team in the Village Success Center

The team is comprised of Erin Whiffen, Dr. Lisa Lyon (LS Enrichment), Ann Nathan (LS TLC), Kandice Pryor (MS TLC), Jenn Schehr (US TLC), and Rob Absher (US TLC), all enthusiastic about collaborating with TVS students and families The VSC team provides academic support services across all three school divisions In addition to the traditional TLC supports we have offered students in the past, we are thrilled to offer an enrichment component for those students who need additional challenges outside of the classroom.
The 2024-2025 school year provides an even more supportive and robust way for students to dive into learning successfully Our TVS Success Center will liaise between teachers, families, and students to help implement Village School Education Plans (VSEP), enrichment services, support services and guide students toward a successful year.
Students who require additional support services have a Village School Education Plan (VSEP) This VSEP will be shared with all of the student's teachers and will guide them in meeting each child’s individual accommodations. During the first week of school, teachers will be given time to get to know your child and the Success Center team will meet with departments to review individual learning supports and plans We aim to have each student working toward academic independence and self-advocacy
TVS Success Center Enrichment students work in small groups to challenge their critical thinking and problem-solving skills Dr Lisa Lyon will collaborate with classroom teachers to offer our high-achieving students a robust and differentiated learning experience Dr Lyon looks forward to working with our students and staff to offer her extensive expertise
If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Erin Whiffen, The Village Success Center Coordinator, at ewhiffen@tvsnaples org or call the school at 239-593-7686 ext 205
With gratitude, Dr. Dennis Chapman Head of School

The Village School of Naples (TVS) is a 1:1 device campus. Students are responsible for obtaining their own devices for use at school. Students in grades 4-8 may purchase any brand and model of Chromebook they like. Upper School students (grades 9-12) are encouraged to bring in a full-featured laptop (Mac or PC), but may also use a Chromebook. If your child is both a returning student and is entering 5th-12th grade, your device is ready to go for the 2023-2024 school year. Your child can just come to the first day of school with their fully charged Chromebook. You do not need to read the rest of this letter. If your child is new to the Chromebook program at TVS (4th-12th Grade), or if you have purchased a new device over the summer, or if your child plans on using a full featured laptop for the school year, please continue reading below
There are three major considerations for the 1:1 program for the 2024-2025 school year:
1
Upper School students are encouraged to bring in full-featured laptops (Mac or PC) in order to take advantage of the full breadth of the school’s software offerings
2 There will be a $5 per day charge for loaner Chromebooks
Students who are not new to the school or the Chromebook program will be charged $40 for the licensing of each new Chromebook
3
For newly purchased Chromebooks and laptops, please have them labelled with the student’s first and last name and grade level, fully charged, turned on at least once, and dropped off at the check in desk in the Sauter Wesley Center on either August 7 or 8 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. without the charging cable or any type of case Please do not log into them with personal accounts, since we will be enrolling each device into our TVS Google domain
Please place some sort of name and grade label on your child’s device before you drop it off so we know which student owns the device We will document the brand, model, and serial number of the Chromebook for our records and link it to the student’s name If a Chromebook has been logged into prior to being dropped off, we will wipe the device to prepare it for our management installa will control the allowed applications, settings are the same as what is used o please have them labelled with the s charged, turned on at least once, and Wesley Center on either August 7 o charging cable or any type of case. Pla password on the keyboard of the comp and security software.
Students will be solely responsible for t devices. TVS strongly recommends pr problems and/or damage. Any repairs, must be handled by the student/family the event that a student has to send th non-warranty repair or if their device is
We are looking forward to another ama students and parents in August For an of Information Technology at tventiquat
Sincerely, TVS Technology Department

CAMPUS
Keeping students and faculty safe at TVS has always been of the utmost importance Best practices for safety in schools have changed exponentially in the last several years. Increased security has become a necessity for many in high-risk areas. We are fortunate to be located in North Naples, surrounded by beautiful neighborhoods and low crime; however, now is not the time to be complacent
TVS underwent a refresh of our security camera system. Through this process, our security platform has become cloud-based and we now have approximately 190 cameras strategically placed throughout our campus
Additionally, we also now have a dedicated golf cart for the officers, so they may canvas the parking lot and campus more efficiently.
Finally, to aid in the safety of all of us, we have a system to identify all vehicles on our campus We ask that all drivers (parents, staff, and students) complete the Car Registration Form by August 30 Once the form has been completed and submitted, TVS will distribute parking clings for each vehicle These clings must be placed inside the car, on the lower right interior corner of the windshield, making it easily viewed by our safety officers and staff.

Working together, we are keeping our community safe Here’s to a fantastic & safe 2024-25 school year!
PARKING LOT & CAR LINE SAFETY REMINDERS
Please obey all traffic signs on campus: slow down for crosswalks, stop at stop signs, obey campus posted speed limit signs, don't block campus intersections/turns, & pay attention when in the car line No cell phones or devices are permitted while driving on campus as this is a school zone If you are on a cell phone while driving it needs to be hands-free and you must be able to still drive without being distracted, so you can hear emergency vehicles & observe staff directing traffic.
