Heavy Horses head to Kinver

INSIDE THIS MONTH

This year’s Kinver Country Fayre is aiming to provide plenty of entertainment for Father’s Day on Sunday 19 June and there are some rather large visitors expected. One of the main attractions will be The Midland Heavy Horse Association (MHHA), who are holding their annual Club Show over the weekend on fields close to the village centre and who will be taking part in Sunday’s Fayre. “We’re thrilled to be coming to Kinver”, said Yvonne Simmons of the MHHA. “This will be an opportunity for the community and visitors to meet our very special horses and watch them in action. People will be able to visit our camp and also see the horses pulling carts in the parade through the village.”

These days it is not unusual for dogs to be treated by their owners as surrogate children and ‘pampered pouches’ are common. The industry surrounding the trend is huge and everything seems to be available, from special foods and expensive bedding and even special doggy spas! But, what does a dog really need to be happy and contented?

Pots of colour for your patio by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

I am often asked ‘what can I put in my patio containers to give lots of colour for as long as possible without having to constantly replant them?’ This is a tall order, and unfortunately I cannot really recommend any plant that will fill the bill. Topiary box, yew or some of the dwarfer conifers will give shape and form to the patio, but sadly no flowers.

WIN 4 TICKETS TO SEE THE LEGENDARY ORIGINAL TRIBUTE TO THE BLUES BROTHERS We are delighted to offer three Villager Magazine readers the chance to win four tickets each to the performance of ‘The legendary Original Tribute to THE BLUES BROTHERS’

at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Monday 23rd May at 7.30pm

If you really want the best from your containers, and by this I mean flowers for at least six months of the year, you really do have to plant them up at least twice per year. Late spring is the time to get them planted up for lots of summer colour, and it does not have to be expensive or time consuming. Modern varieties of bedding plants are so vigorous that you do not need many to make a really good show.

Begonias are another good choice. You can choose the fibrous rooted bedding varieties, some of which have striking chocolate coloured leaves, or the more flamboyant double varieties with larger flowers like the aptly named ‘Non-stop’ series. If you dry and store the tubers carefully at the end of the summer, you can even keep these from one season to the next. F1Hybrid Geraniums are superb in pots and they will even tolerate getting a bit dry occasionally, so if your patio is very sunny or you sometimes forget to water, geraniums

WHAT YOUR DOG REALLY NEEDS

Eating a balanced diet will help keep a dog in the best possible health. The best diet for a dog is a high quality, commercially prepared food, bought from your vet, a large pet store or an on-line pharmacy. These have been specifically formulated for all your pet’s nutritional needs and will ensure they don’t become deficient in anything. That is not to say you can’t add extras to the food for interest, many people like to give their dogs a few veg or a bit of chicken with their dinner but the vast majority of what they eat should come out of a bag. It is incredibly difficult to give a dog a properly balanced diet with 100% home feeding, not to mention time consuming, and although some owners think by doing so they are doing the very best for their pet, they rarely are.

Dogs are social animals and thrive off contact with humans and their own kind. So, it is important to make sure they are not left alone for long periods; otherwise they can get bored and develop behavioural problems. Many owners don’t appreciate that their care and attention is one of the most important thing to their pet, so next time you want to treat your dog, rather than reaching for a fatty biscuit, spend a bit longer playing with them or have a quick grooming session; they will thrive on it! All breeds of dogs are naturally athletic and need good levels of exercise to keep them fit and healthy. Every dog should be walked at least once a day and have an hour off the lead. They are also intelligent creatures and need mental stimulation as well. This is one of the reasons why training your dog is so important, not only does it help you to stay in control, it is also very satisfying for your pet to have the challenge of learning and carrying out new commands. A well trained dog will be much calmer and more contented than a poorly trained one.

There are only a few dogs who really enjoy their regular trips to the vets (don’t worry, we are used to it and don’t take it personally!) but they are absolutely vital to ensure they stay healthy. Annual vaccinations not only prevent some very nasty diseases, they are also an opportunity for your pet to have a proper checkover with their vet and make sure there are no problems developing. Catching issues early means your vet will have a much better chance of fixing them. If you are lucky and only go to the vets yearly, that is like you only getting seen by your GP once every 7 years (and if something is niggling you, you can tell someone, your pet doesn’t have that luxury!). It is also very important to regularly de-flea and de-worm your dog and make some provisions for dental care. Dogs are fabulous pets but do need a certain level of care to make sure they are not only healthy but also happy. This doesn’t mean buying them expensive beds, accessories or clothing !, it just means feeding a good quality diet, ensuring their health needs are met and spending quality time with them everyday!

• 1tsp crème fraiche

• 2 sticks rhubarb thinly sliced on an angle • 2 tsp icing sugar

METHOD

1. Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7

2. Roll the pastry out thinly and using a plate or cutter, cut out 4 circles about 14cm in diameter. Use a slightly smaller cutter to cut a circle out of the middle and trim away the outside border, reserving these trimmings.

3. Lay the 4 circles on a baking sheet, prick all over with a fork and brush the edges with egg. Use the pastry trimmings to make a border around the edge like a vol-au-vent and press down gently with your thumb. Chill until needed. This can be done up to 1 day ahead or frozen for up to 1 month.

4. In a small bowl, mix the demerara sugar with the crème fraîche and spread a thin amount over the base of each tart. Neatly arrange slices of rhubarb, overlapping in a floral pattern, over the crème fraîche, then dust generously with icing sugar.

5. Bake the tarts for 20 mins until puffed up and golden. Leave to rest for a few mins and eat warm with a scoop of ice cream, if you like.

The April meeting of Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club was held at the Kingfisher Hotel, Wall Heath, 35 members supported the Easter Bring & Buy stall entitled ‘Everything Yellow’.

Following an excellent 3 course lunch the speaker Mr. Rod Quilter caused great hilarity with his talk ‘Remarkable Restraints’. He opened his suitcase and like a conjurer bringing rabbits out of a hat produced ancient corsets, basques and bras made by famous names now long gone such as Spirella, Burleigh and Equisite Form as well as a Diana Dors model step-in roll on. They cost £11 9s 0d plus purchase tax equivalent to £220 today.

The Next meeting is on 13th May when Kate Cadman talks about pottery and in June Pat Bickford from Moseley Old Hall talks about Tudor Medicines. The coach outing on 15th June is to Evesham Country Park and Broadway.

Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club meets on the second Friday of each month 12 for 12.30pm departing at 3pm.

Visitors will receive a warm welcome - ring the Secretary for more information on 01902 372984.

Gardening

Pots of colour for your patio by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

I am often asked ‘what can I put in my patio containers to give lots of colour for as long as possible without having to constantly replant them?’ This is a tall order, and unfortunately I cannot really recommend any plant that will fill the bill. Topiary box, yew or some of the dwarfer conifers will give shape and form to the patio, but sadly no flowers.

One of the most popular is the Impatiens, better known as Busy Lizzies. They will do well in sun or shade, come in a huge range of colours and the old flowers just ’disappear’ so the plants always look clean.

F1Hybrid Geraniums are superb in pots and they will even tolerate getting a bit dry occasionally, so if your patio is very sunny or you sometimes forget to water, geraniums

are very forgiving. They are a little more expensive, but three good plants will fill a decent sized container and flower for you throughout the summer and well into the autumn. A cheaper alternative is Lobelia, especially the variety ‘Fountains Mixed’. Just a few plants will create a lovely frothy pot full of flowers for really no money at all.

If you have an artistic bent, you can experiment with all sorts of different combinations. The choice these days really is huge. In larger containers, just select a taller plant like an upright growing fuchsia or for a more tropical look a cordyline, and then plant a mixture of different ‘pot’ bedding around the edge of the pot. Try to co-ordinate your colours and the result can be stunning. If you get stuck for ideas, try to make time this summer to visit Powis Castle (National Trust) on the Welsh border near to Welshpool. They usually have some wonderful containers on the terraced gardens below the castle.

WHAT YOUR DOG REALLY NEEDS Pets

Written by Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS

These days it is not unusual for dogs to be treated by their owners as surrogate children and ‘pampered pouches’ are common. The industry surrounding the trend is huge and everything seems to be available, from special foods and expensive bedding and even special doggy spas! But, what does a dog really need to be happy and contented?

26

Cat is the resident vet for www.petstreet.co.uk, the UK’s largest pet lover’s social network. Please note, this is an advice only article, if you have any concerns about a pet, you should contact your vet.
