Fill those garden gaps at Bodenham Arboretum
PLANT HUNTERS FAIR The free to enter Plant Hunters’ Fair returns to Bodenham Arboretum on Saturday 11th April with the brilliant selection of plant nurseries and sundries that local gardeners have come to expect.

It’s a great time to give your beds and borders a spring clean and plant something new to fill those gaps. With every type of plant from alpines to acers, clematis to centaurea, geums to grevilleas and most things in between there’s always plenty to tempt even the most experienced gardener, and for the new gardener there’s plenty of free, honest advice to be had from the expert plants people. This April the fair welcomes back old favourites like SpecialPerennials from Cheshire with their great range of plants for a nature-friendly flower garden including their National Collection of heleniums that so delighted Carol Klein on BBC Gardener’s World last summer. Another TV featured nursery travels all the way from Cornwall: - Roseland House always have lots of lovely climbers including Clematis, Honeysuckle and old roses. New to the fair are Paviour & Davies from Herefordshire who grow many rare and unusual southern hemisphere plants. Lyneal Mill Nursery with wild species plants are another new face. Studio 8 Pottery are first-timers too with their own made hand-thrown pots, planters and kitchenware. RHS medallists include Potterton’s Alpines all the way from Lincolnshire; Packhorse Farm (Acers) from Derbyshire; Hall Farm Nursery from Shropshire and local stars Cotswold Garden Flowers, The Cottage Herbery and Hillview Hardy Plants. In all we have 19 stalls lined up to date. So whether its alpines, trees, shrubs, bee-friendly perennials, plants for shade, climbers, herbs, spring bulbs, pots, garden furniture, variegated and foliage plants you are sure to find something to fill those gaps and creating a blooming brilliant garden this year.

PC PROBLEMS?
At PC Problems we get asked the same questions quite often, due to myths and stories that keep getting passed around, even though many of them are completely false. Let’s run through the most common computer myths.
MAGNETS WILL DESTROY MY DATA. FALSE USB pens, hard drives and flash media are completely un-affected my magnetism, in fact all hard drives have a very powerful magnet inside them to control the read/write heads. DOES TURNING OFF MY COMPUTER EVERY TIME SHORTEN ITS LIFE? FALSE Computer wear is based on usage, the amount of time that it is actually turned on. The fact that you turn in on and off does not add to the wear and tear of it. You are actually saving money turning it off, if it’s not on, it’s not using electricity.

I NEED TO PERIODICALLY RUN MY BATTERY DOWN TO ZERO TO MAINTAIN ITS LIFE? FALSE. Modern batteries are controlled by a circuit board, this tells the laptop or phone how much charge is remaining or how much is stored if it’s charging. The circuit board can only estimate, it’s not exact. To recalibrate the battery it has to be completely discharged, this calibration has nothing to do with a batteries life span.

I HAVE AN APPLE MAC, MAC’S DON’T GET VIRUSES. FALSE All computers have bugs and weaknesses in them; these get exploited by hackers, who release malware to make money in some way. They don’t care who or what they infect, it’s just a return on investment. Windows seems to have more malware because far more Windows PC’s are in use than Mac’s, but as Apples become more popular, so will the malware and viruses.

THREE-DAY FEAST OF MUSIC COMING TO
KINVER
PLANS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED FOR WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE BIGGEST MUSICAL EVENT EVER TO BE HELD IN KINVER The village’s Rotary Club have joined the organisers of last year’s Kinver Music Event to create a three-day festival that will see most of the village’s public houses, community halls, and schools host a massive variety of performers that will cater for everybody’s taste in music.
Following the theme of last year’ successful event, free live music will be playing at venues throughout the village on Friday July 10 and Sunday July 12, sandwiching the Rotary Club’s Saturday Spectacular
One payment will cover entry into all venues for the entire evening, although a one-off charge will be made for admission to a 2 hour performance by one of the world’s finest accordion duos that is to take place during the afternoon.
Emulating Rotary’s memorable Musical Extravaganza of a few years ago, the Saturday Spectacular will feature a brass band, choirs, a traditional Irish band and other speciality acts who will perform throughout the evening at five venues, including Edgecliff schools, Kinver Methodist Church and Church hall, St Peter’s Church Hall and the KSCA where a stunning laser show is planned as a finale.
On Friday and Sunday pubs and other locations are going to be hosting gigs, with blues, pop, rock, jazz, country and folk sessions expected to bring in the crowds. Full details of performers, times and locations will be available nearer to the date. If you are a local performer and are interested in playing you should contact tim.charnock@btinternet.com
All performers will present programmes at set times and for set periods of 30 to 40 minutes duration to allow visitors to move from one to the other throughout the evening.

BY MARTIN BLOW THE SPRING BULBS are putting on a great show in the garden but when they finish there is sometimes a lull before the summer blooms kick in. Fortunately there is a good range of easy to grow perennials to fill the gap with flower. These are some of my favourites. All are suitable for the smaller garden as well. Geum (Avens) are one of the most reliable and adaptable perennials for late spring and early summer. They form low-growing mats of tough leaves and have bell-shaped flowers on wiry stems in a range of colours. Some like ‘Lemon Drops’ have nodding single flowers, whereas a lot of modern types have larger, outward-facing semi-double flowers. One of the best is ‘Hannays’ with lots of showy orange flowers on 1ft tall plants. Great for the front of the border.

The perennial Cornflowers (Centaurea) are invaluable for their great show of bee-pleasing flowers in April, May and June. The Montana types are ideal for front to mid-border although these do spread once established. ‘Purple Heart’ is one of best with her amethyst-centred white flowers. There are also pink, blue and purple varieties to choose from. ‘Jordy’ is a new form; more upright in growth and with masses of burgundy red flowers on and off from early May right through to October. Iris are one of the glories of late spring. The bearded types have the showiest flowers and need a sunny, well-drained soil. My favourites however are the Siberian Irises – these will grow just about anywhere except dark shade and thrive in wet or dry soils. The wild ones are blue but for the garden you can find white, yellow, pink and combinations of these colours.

Elke - Perfect for sunny borders Hardy Geraniums (Cranesbill) are out of fashion somewhat at the moment and often ignored because a few varieties spread and seed to excess. There are some really good, wellbehaved ones for the front to mid-border though. Geranium macrorrhizum is a mouthful of a name but this is a really good doer, growing in sun or deep shade and always free flowering. There are magenta, pink and white varieties available. The Bloody Cranesbills (Geranium sanguineum) – so called because of their red roots – are brilliant, weed smothering plants for the edge of a warm, sunny border. They flower their hearts out in May and June. I give them a good haircut in July and they reward this attention by flowering again in August and September. The best varieties are ‘Elke’, ‘Elsbeth’, ‘Album’ and ‘Max Frei’. There are lots more great perennials to bridge the gap between spring and summer, if you want to get inspired get out to a National Garden Scheme garden in April or May and see what’s in flower. Better yet come along to one of our Plant Hunters’ Fairs and get some great flowers to fill the gaps in your garden.

Black Country Schools' Badminton Finalists and Winners 2015 Students from The Kingswinford School's Badminton Team played magnificently when recently they attended the Black Country Schools' Badminton Championships in February at the University of Wolverhampton.
The standard of play on the day was extremely high with some very talented students from schools across the whole of the Black Country competing against each other to see who would represent the Black Country in the West Midlands school finals.
