FRIENDS
OF WORDSLEY PARK
2012
by Geoff Paddock ’King George V Wordsley Park is situated between Bells Lane and Lawnswood Road in Wordsley and has royal connections. Part of the park is an independent charity and registered as a King George Field, which forms part of the National memorial to his late Majesty King George V, which specifies that the land is to be preserved for public recreation. It is now managed by the council on behalf of the National Playing Fields Association.
Previous ‘Friends’ groups had started to improve facilities but until a few weeks ago no group was currently in existence and progress stopped.
The first official meeting of the new “Friends of Wordsley Park 2012” Group was held at the Source Youth Club in Barnett Lane Wordsley on Wednesday 30th May, attended by a Committee made up of local residents, representatives of youth groups and area Councillors covering all age groups and interested parties. The meeting began with an introduction by the Chair, Chris Enwerem, the draft constitution was discussed including a motion that the Group would be totally non-political and would represent all residents equally. This was agreed by all members. General discussions followed which included possible improvements and help from various bodies including Dudley MBC and other “Friends” groups in the area.

‘Our long term aim is to create a a pleasant park with amenities that can be enjoyed by all age groups’. Please help us to achieve this. Representations have now been made to the Council in the hope that some improvements can be made almost immediately and discussions on longer term projects have begun. Hopefully we can report some successes shortly. The Friends of Wordsley Park 2012 Group is now included on Dudley Information Directory web site, Dudley Council website and on the Villager Magazine website. We also have notices in local Schools, Libraries, Youth Clubs and community centres.
If any members of the public, local residents and visitors have any suggestions or views on what would enhance their experience of the park, or would like to join us and get regular news please email wordsleyparkfriends2012@gmail.com and we will see what can be done. We have also set up a Facebook page for local residents to follow and pass on information. This can be found by searching ‘Wordsley Park-friends’, please like our page and ask to be our friend.

Local Glass Master Passes on His Tools to Encourage a New Generation Glasshouse College Student Tom Southhall, 18, graduates from 3 years study with some tools of the trade kindly presented to him from glass master; Kevin Andrews who has clocked up more than 50 years in the trade.
Tom was on work experience at Stourbridge Glass Engravers when proprietor Ian Dury noticed he had a real talent for freehand glass engraving and introduced him to respected ex ‘copper wheel engraver’ Kevin Andrews at the recent Webb Corbett Reflections day at Ruskin Glass Centre.

Kevin Andrews, 66, worked at Webb Corbett and Thomas Webb as a copper wheel engraver and was known locally as being one of the very best in the industry, he later went on to work at Brierley Hill Glass College before retiring in 2009. After meeting Tom and seeing his engraving Kevin was impressed with his technical ability and artistic flair, which compelled him to present Tom with his own portable engraving equipment. Tom has successfully been accepted into Stourbridge College to study Art and is hoping to continue to perfect his skills using the new drill.
Students from the specialist College that share the site alongside Ruskin Glass Centre and soon to open Glasshouse Arts Centre undertake practical work experience with commercial businesses on site as part of their programme of study. Ian Dury said, ‘This is a prime example of a senior craftsman from the Stourbridge Glass Industry showing eagerness and enthusiasm in encouraging a student to follow his ambition and reach his potential in the arts’

MDH Support is a Wordsley-based micro-provider offering a care package that will be tailored to your needs. They give adults (17+) with autism or learning disabilities a variety of opportunities to access the community, focusing on sports, life skills, social and educational activities. Mike Hands, operations manager said "We help adults with autism or learning disabilities achieve their goals in life, however modest or ambitious they may be".
Mike's inspiration for setting up the business was his son, who has severe autism, epilepsy and learning disabilities, but with the right support has succeeded in many areas, including sport and computing. Mike aims to replicate that success with other adults with autism or learning disabilities. With the right support they can improve their communication skills, increase their independence, improve fitness and increase self-esteem and confidence. Mike takes one young man to a golf driving range and also helps him with his music practice, with the aim that one day he will perform in a concert. Local business helps to UP-CYCLE old bottles
Kevin Barry Crystal, based at Ruskin Glass Centre in Stourbridge, has been looking at ingenious ways to make use of glass that would normally be disposed of to create personalised candle holders and wind chimes for the home or garden.
Using bottles of different size, shape and colour Kevin has developed a range of fully recycled items that mean that old bottles get reused without even having to be transported to recycling plants. Customers as young as 5 years old have even been to the Centre to decorate old bottles with their own designs using a sandblasting machine. Kevin has used his skills as an intaglio glass engraver to develop a new range of products that are all up-cycled and on display in his shop.
Kevin said, ‘I really like using traditional skills to recycle what we would normally put in our recycling or into bottle banks. With the sandblasted items even children can come and recycle bottles to create a gift or keepsake that they have had a hand in making.’
Customers are encouraged to bring their own bottle in; whether it is an empty champagne bottle from a special occasion or a few beer bottles to create a set of quirky tea light holders.

Garden Time
IN DEFENCE OF LEYLANDII By Philip Baulk Head Gardener of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd
I was in Holland recently and visited a ‘model’ village which had originally been the inspiration of a wealthy factory owner, and it was based on similar lines to the Cadbury village in Bournville. Every property was bordered by a neatly trimmed privet hedge; the sort that was so popular in the first half of the twentieth century. In the second half of the same century, privet was largely replaced by Cuprocyparis leylandii, especially on new housing developments where, by providing an almost instant screen, it very quickly afforded a degree of privacy. Now however, ‘Leylandii’ has developed a bad image, so what has gone so terribly wrong? Does this ubiquitous fast growing conifer really deserve such a poor reputation?
A hybrid between the Nootka Cypress and the Monterey Cypress, there are now over forty different varieties and clones of Cuprocyparis leylandii, and if left untrimmed, most of them can easily attain 15 metres (50feet) in height in about fifteen years. A fully mature specimen can reach over 35 metres (115 feet) so it is not really surprising that in some instances, they can get completely out of control.

In the worst case scenarios, it is possible under part VIII of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act to ask your local authority to look into a complaint about an exceptionally high hedge, and they have the power to force offenders to have this cut back to reasonable levels.
Severe trimming of an overgrown hedge will not produce a good looking screen. Cutting back into really mature growth will at best leave a very unsightly hedge, and there is a good chance that it may never re-grow into a respectable looking green screen, which was probably the original intention of the person who planted it. Does this mean, therefore, that we should never plant Cuprocyparis leylandii ? Not at all; when planted correctly and looked after from the word ‘go’, there is no reason why these conifers should not produce a perfectly good hedge that is relatively easy to manage without the expense of having to employ professional people to trim it.
For best results, Cuprocyparis leylandii should be planted approximately one metre (3ft.) apart. Closer planting may result in rather sparse lower foliage as plants get older. Young plants up to one metre in height generally give the best results in the long term. Anyone requiring an instant screen can be tempted to plant much larger specimens, bur surprisingly, C.leylandii do not produce massive root systems and plants that were larger when planted can sometimes be uprooted in very windy conditions. Once the hedge reaches a manageable height, remove the leading growth and begin to shape the hedge gradually. The most important point is not to let the new hedge get too large before taking action. The ideal height is somewhere around two metres (6.5ft) but it is possible to let them go taller as long as you are happy to trim them safely with the correct equipment. C.leylandii only becomes a problem when trimming is delayed or neglected, and this is really down to the gardener. Cuprocyparis leylandii can rapidly make an excellent evergreen screen, or golden one if you prefer, just as long as it is maintained correctly and so perhaps it really does not deserve such a bad reputation after all.

SUMMERS HERE!! A quick recipe for the barbecue

Barbecue Lamb and Chilli Burgers with Sweet Potato Serves 4 and takes 15-20 minutes INGREDIENTS 4 sweet potatoes cut into slices Olive oil 400g lean minced lamb 1 medium red onion fine diced 1 medium red chilli 1 tsp soy sauce Sea salt and black pepper 100ml natural yoghurt 4 crusty rolls Organic rocket Lemon juice
‘You can also use the same recipe for beef, pork or chicken mince’ 30
METHOD 1. Turn on or light the barbecue. Toss the sweet potato slices with 1 tbsp olive oil and some salt and pepper, set aside while you make the burgers.
2. Mix together the lamb, onion, soy and chilli, season with black pepper. Form into 4 burgers. Griddle for 4-5 minutes on each side un%l cooked through. Cook the potato at the same %me un%l tender. 3. In a bowl mix rocket leaves with a squeeze of lemon juice and olive oil, place onto a roll and top with your burger and yoghurt. Done!! Serve and enjoy.
