eSafety Forum

It was a great pleasure to host Julie Inman Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, at my eSafety forum in October. Julie provided a highly insightful, yet practical presentation on cybersafety to the many parents, carers and educators who came to hear about this important subject. The key matters that Julie spoke about included current and emerging thinking on how parents and carers can keep their children safe online; what her office can do to help when there are serious issues including cyberbullying and nonconsensual sharing of images; and how kids are using Kids Helpline when they encounter broader problems. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner produces excellent, age appropriate resources for children, parents, carers and educators including iParent, The Lost Summer and the Yes Project. All these and more can be found at www.esafety.gov.au.

Centenary of Armistice

This year Remembrance Day had special significance as we marked 100 years since the guns fell silent on the battlefields of Europe. It says much about Australians that a century on we still pause to honour those men and women who gave their lives during the First World War. We do so because we understand the incredible bravery, sacrifice and endurance of those who were prepared to defend our values in that war and in conflicts since. It was wonderful that our community, including veterans and their families, joined together in Lane Cove Plaza and other important places across my electorate for Remembrance Day ceremonies. We remain a grateful community and nation for the service of men and women who rightly deserve to be remembered and honoured.

Currambena Primary School Gets New Classrooms

Currambena Primary School was the proud recipient of $245,000 in funding from the Federal Government through the Capital Grants Program for two new classrooms. It was a great privilege to open the new facilities at this vibrant local school.

These new classrooms take into account educational research and will see students learn more effectively. This is part of our commitment to ensuring students have the support they need to succeed in the classroom. The Government has committed $660 million over four years, which provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure.

Royal North Shore Hospital 130 Year Anniversary

Recently I joined with staff, patients, volunteers and many other guests to mark the 130th anniversary of the Royal North Shore Hospital. The Royal North Shore Hospital started as a result of a public meeting held on Friday 30th October 1885 - not far from where the hospital stands today - to discuss how to give the people of the North Shore much needed and better access to health services. Just a year later, on 18th June 1888, Willoughby became home to a modest cottage hospital which has grown to become the Royal North Shore Hospital and which is now one of New South Wales' and, indeed, Australia's leading health precincts. The hospital has served members of the local and broader Sydney community diligently and with incredible care ever since. To them, and all associated with the hospital, I say congratulations on 130 years of outstanding service to our community.
