Support received for new performance space in Coles site

A total of 28 submissions were received by Council in relation to the proposed redevelopment of the current Coles site. This included 24 submissions, plus a petition from the Lane Cove Concert Band with 81 names, that highlighted a preference for the proposed community space within the development to be utilised as a performing arts space. Council said that the final use for the community space is yet to be determined and that further investigation will commence on possible suitable uses. The Minutes from Council’s November meeting said that Council has delivered a variety of new community spaces based on needs identified in its Cultural Plan and Social Plan, with the key outstanding facility being a local performance space. Council said that the only other potential site(s) within the Lane Cove CBD for a performance space are the Community Centre and the Living and Learning Centre in Longueville Road, and that they are currently looking at options to consolidate the Central Avenue/Longueville Road property to regularise the larger site. Any development on this site for a performance space would also need to accommodate the Living and Learning Centre; Before and After School Care; Early Childhood Health Centre; and Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios. The scale of the project would be significant and is not funded within Council’s current 10-year Financial Plan. In relation to the Coles site at 56-60 Burns Bay Road, Council has now entered into a Voluntary Planning Agreement with the developer and will commence a process to determine suitable uses and users of the proposed community space, together with design options and a fit-out budget.

Submission period extended for St Leonards plan

The community consultation period in relation to the State Government’s St Leonards and Crows Nest Draft 2036 Plan has been extended until Friday 8th February 2019. This follows requests from Council to the Department of Planning and Environment for additional consultation sessions and an extension to the overall period for submissions. The Department is conducting two extra community drop-in sessions in Lane Cove – one which was held in late November and the second date which is to be confirmed. Council will also separately organise a third facilitated session to examine in more detail issues raised in the Plan package.

Guiding Stars lead the way

A number of Lane Cove and Sydney-based artists have been commissioned by Council to create a series of bold, three-dimensional star sculptures using electronic waste materials. These unique works invite residents to think twice about the amount of e-waste generated through Christmas gift-giving and to consider appropriately recycling necessary e-waste. The artworks will be on display at various locations in Lane Cove throughout December. See www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/streetsidegallery
