Councillor Pam Palmer, Mayor

I love being in Lane Cove during the Christmas-New Year period. So delightful, very entertaining and totally stress-free! The lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Plaza on 7th December is a traditional event to signal the start of festivities. It is a great pageant, especially for young children. It is also exciting at this time of year to view all the entries in our Christmas Lights competition. For gifts, I suggest avoiding the madness of overcrowded malls by shopping in the many unique boutiques and shops across Lane Cove. It can be far less stressful and I’m sure you will easily find a gift for the special people in your life ...or perhaps just something unique for yourself! As the weather turns warmer, chill out at one of our swimming pools. There’s the Aquatic Centre or the harbour-side pool at Greenwich Baths or Lucretia Baths on the Lane Cove River. Or you may like to gather together for a picnic at one of our shaded foreshore parks. Council has been installing free barbeques throughout our parks and upgrading toilet facilities too. You will also find new play equipment to enjoy at many parks and perhaps discover that some of the equipment is actually targeted at adults, including seniors, to encourage everyone to work off that Christmas dinner! There are many places in Lane Cove where you can enjoy the New Years’ Eve fireworks too. Manns Point at Greenwich is one of the best views. It’s a family-friendly location (alcohol-free) but there are restrictions on car access to keep it pedestrian friendly. I sincerely wish everyone an enjoyable holiday!

Young in Art exhibition
This group exhibition, held in November, drew appreciative crowds on opening night and throughout the exhibition as we discovered young local artists and their works. Encouraging students from local schools to discover their creative side, the exhibition brings school communities together. Two winning pieces from both the Primary and Secondary sections will be hung in Council’s entrance foyer for one year, so that people who missed the exhibition can view this amazing talent.
Hunters Hill Street Feast
Gladesville Road and the Hunters Hill Village came alive in November with thousands of people joining together for the Hunters Hill Street Feast. Organised by Discover Hunters Hill, Gladeville Road was closed and festooned with lights, tables and chairs as the community came together to share in the feast, listen to the music and enjoy being part of this fantastic community event.
New Years’ Eve road closure
Hunters Hill will be closed at the Church Street overpass from 1.00pm on New Years’ Eve, Monday 31st December, until midnight on January 1st 2019. A limited number of entry passes are available for friends and family of residents and commercial business on the peninsula. Residents will need to show proof of residency (such as a driver’s licence or rates notice) to obtain a pass. There is a maximum of two passes per household, with two additional passes available if off-street parking is possible on the property. The road closure is designed to regulate the volume of traffic entering Hunters Hill east of the overpass and to prevent congestion and parking problems. This will ensure public safety and enable emergency access. A Park and Ride service, with buses running every 15 minutes and requiring your Opal card, will be available from Boronia Park. Please visit www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au for more details. Passes are now available from Council’s Customer Service Centre until midday on Monday 24th December. Pass holders are advised to fix their entry pass on the inside of their windscreen to allow for easy identification.
Christmas and New Year
On behalf of the staff and councillors of Hunter’s Hill Council, I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas break. If you’re travelling, please take great care on the roads.
Let me emphasise what an honour and privilege it is to have represented the Lane Cove electorate in the NSW Parliament over the past 15 years. I am extremely proud of what the community and I have been able to achieve for the Lane Cove electorate. About $60 million worth of funding has gone to upgrading of local infrastructure – schools, roads, public transport, parks and open spaces, to mention a few. And this year alone, the Lane Cove electorate has greatly benefited from funding for numerous local projects. These are just some: • $1 million for a massive upgrade of Boronia Park • $1 million to make Mindarie Park an inclusive play space • $50,000 for an off-leash dog facility at Blackman Park • $107,000 for repairs to Greendale Scout Hall • $180,000 for Longueville Sporting Club • $450,000 for Tantallon Oval • $100,000 for Kingsford Smith Oval • $105,000 for improved boating access • More than $70,000 for Putney Tennyson Bowling and
Community Club • $150,000 for planting azaleas on Epping Rd • Almost $31,000 for upgrades to Carisbrook House. I am excited to say that there will soon be many hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of other announcements to come - upgrades to facilities and grants to community groups - for the benefit of our community. To all final year high school students, I wish you good grades in the HSC and success in whatever you pursue in life. And let me just remind you all that even if you haven’t made it to university, the world can still be your oyster. The trades are calling. Thanks to the booming economy this Government has helped provide, jobs in the trades are in high demand and are highly paid.
To everyone, I urge you to please take care over the summer holidays – drive and play safely. And, as we approach the end of another momentous year, I would like to wish everyone of you the very best of everything. I wish you all a holy Christmas and happy and relaxing holiday period. And I wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year. And I look forward to continuing to represent you all to the best of my ability in the future.
