CONCERT NOTES

Aaron Copland is one of America’s most iconic composers, often dubbed the “Dean of American Composers.” Fanfare for the Common Man (1942) is one of his most wellknown works, composed during World War II as part of a series of fanfares commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. This work, grand and powerful, has become a symbol of the American spirit and resilience, often performed at ceremonial events. Its bold brass and percussion sections convey a sense of dignity and strength.

Ernest Gold was an Austrian-American composer, best known for his film scores. His most famous work is the score for Exodus (1960), which earned him an Academy Award. The Boston Pops March (often associated with the Boston Pops Orchestra and performed regularly in their concerts) reflects the exuberance and celebration of American popular music. Its lively and catchy melody captures the spirit of a festive event.

Riz Ortolani and Nino Oliviero composed More, a pop song adapted from a film score for the 1962 Italian documentary film Mondo Cane. Ortolani and Oliviero originally composed the melody as an orchestral arrangement that served as the film’s theme music. Italian lyrics were provided by Marcello Ciorciolini, which were adapted into English by Norman Newell. It has since become an easy listening and pop standard.

CONCERT NOTES

Richard Hayman was a prominent American conductor, arranger, and harmonica virtuoso. His arrangement of Hoe-Down from Copland’s Rodeo (1942) is a delightful, upbeat orchestral piece that exemplifies American folk music through Copland’s distinct style. The Pops Hoe-Down arrangement adds a bit of extra flair, making it suitable for lighter, popular performances, often with a lively and celebratory mood.

Jacques Brel was a Belgian singer-songwriter, known for his powerful and poignant songs in the French chanson tradition. If You Go Away (originally Ne me quitte pas) was one of his most famous and heart-wrenching songs, with themes of love, loss, and longing. This version, arranged by Richard Hayman, transforms the original song into an orchestral arrangement that retains the emotional intensity while giving it a lush, symphonic treatment. It’s a beautiful blend of classical instrumentation with Brel’s deeply emotional storytelling.

Elmer Bernstein was one of Hollywood’s most versatile composers, with a career spanning many genres. The Great Escape March (1963), composed for the classic World War II film The Great Escape, is one of his signature pieces. The music is heroic, with a sense of optimism and determination in the face of adversity. Patrick Russ’s arrangement adds a more orchestral flavor to Bernstein’s already iconic march, often evoking themes of courage and teamwork.

CONCERT NOTES

Meredith Willson was an American composer and playwright, best known for creating the hit Broadway musical The Music Man (1957).

Seventy-Six Trombones is one of the musical’s most famous and jubilant numbers, symbolizing the exuberant energy of the show’s lead character, Professor Harold Hill, as he rallies the townsfolk into forming a marching band. The song is playful, lively, and filled with a sense of optimism. John Wilson’s arrangement enhances the brass section, giving it an even grander and more polished sound for orchestral performances.

Morton Gould (1913–1996) was an American composer, conductor, and pianist, known for his ability to blend classical, jazz, and popular styles in innovative ways. Gould’s arrangement of Yankee Doodle (1942) is a brilliant, lively version of the famous American folk song that has long been associated with patriotic celebrations. The song itself dates back to the 18th century and became popular during the American Revolution, symbolizing American resilience and independence. In Gould’s version, he uses sophisticated orchestral techniques to give the melody a fresh sound, blending humor and high energy. The arrangement showcases his inventive use of rhythm and orchestration, making it a crowd-pleasing piece that exudes both American pride and a sense of musical playfulness.

CONCERT NOTES

American Salute is one of Morton Gould’s most famous compositions, often regarded as a patriotic tone poem. It is a brilliant orchestral arrangement based on the Civil War-era folk tune When Johnny Comes Marching Home. The piece evokes a sense of American patriotism and military heroism, capturing the sound of marching bands and military drums. Gould’s orchestration is vibrant and energetic, with powerful brass sections, sweeping strings, and rhythmic percussion that simulate the sounds of a marching parade.

Leroy Anderson was an American composer and conductor, best known for his light orchestral music and inventive, catchy compositions. He composed numerous pieces that have become staples of the American orchestral repertoire, particularly in the “pops” concert setting. Bugler’s Holiday (1954) is one of Anderson’s most famous and widely performed works. The piece was originally written for brass trio and later orchestrated for full brass section and orchestra. It is a lively and upbeat work that captures the spirit of a military fanfare or a bugler leading a parade.
